Many people are listening to fiction stories in podcasts and audiobooks. Some techniques, such as 3D or binaural sound, might improve the listeners' sensory experience in this kind of format. However, few audio productions are produced with binaural sound, and research about their effects on cognitive processing is scarce. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the impact of binaural sound in audio stories compared to their stereo versions on the listeners' cognitive processing and physiological responses. Fifty participants listened to two stories produced in two versions: binaural and stereo, and they assessed enjoyment, engagement, and imagery while their physiological responses were measured (heart rate and electrodermal activity). Also, they performed a recognition test. The results showed that the binaural version achieved higher narrative engagement, enjoyment, imagery, and information recognition than the stereo stories. The arrival of books by dowry or inheritance into family libraries frequently introduces unexpected evidence of book ownership. Often fragmentary and out of context, these collections are routinely overlooked. This paper examines one such collection, a group of c. 140 books which arrived at Nostell Priory in 1781, part of the inheritance of Louise Sabine d'Hervart (1734–1798), shipped from her childhood home in Vevey, Switzerland. Primarily Germanic, printed between 1550 and 1700, these books chart the reading, interests, and circles of acquaintance of three generations of the Dünz family, an important Brugg dynasty of artists, glass painters, and architects active in the cultural and political life of Bern and its locality. The paper opens with a discussion of some of the methodological challenges facing those working with women's books in private libraries. It then examines the Swiss German books at Nostell, showing how they inform us of the cultural, intellectual, and social lives of members of the Dünz and related families, both male and female. Specifically, these books reveal a culture of book giving and the recording of the exchange of books, but also of close and long-standing relationships between their owners and significant members of the Swiss book trade. Literary reading is under transformation. Digital devices supplement traditional paper books with e-books and audiobooks, and at the same time, ubiquitous digital connection challenges focused reading. Based on a qualitative interview study with adult leisure readers, this article explores how affordances offered by digital technologies influence reading habits. Informants demonstrate how e-books and audiobooks enhance reading experiences, as digital affordances influence the how and the when of literary consumption. Three prominent findings are stated. (1) Readers adapt reading mode to the situation, and experienced readers have developed strategies to maximise the ultimate combination of title, format and reading conditions. (2) Digital reading favours lighter texts. This dimension is more substantial for audiobooks, relating to the wide choice of combining audiobooks with other activities. (3) Being devoted readers motivates people to develop strategies to ensure further reading. These strategies effectively make readers practically and temporally disconnect to immerse in literature. This study provides information about the books in the tereke estates of members of the Ottoman period in the city of Bitola is provided, and the books are classified according to their subjects and informative qualities for Ottoman society. Books in the inheritance records of the period analyzed are mostly concentrated in the field of religious sciences. After religious sciences, literary-moral texts, books produced in many branches of science, such as grammar, logic, medicine, botany, astronomy, history, education, training, and general-purpose encyclopedic works and dictionaries, were found in the inheritance records. As the primary source of the research, the tereke records of the members of the ilmiye which are scattered in twenty-nine shar’iyye registry books between 1607-1697 in the Manastir court were evaluated. This study uses a qualitative research method purpose and scope of the study. Documentary scanning and historical methods were used as data collection techniques, and document analysis was used to analyze the data obtained. The results showed that most of the books read in the place and period examined consisted of textbooks in madrasas and texts that were generally popular in Ottoman society. Introduction: Open book injuries are challenging injuries that oftentimes require surgical treatment. Currently, treatment is performed with symphyseal plating requiring extensive surgery and entirely limiting physiological movement of the symphyseal joint, frequently resulting in implant failure. Therefore, we investigated the biomechanical properties of a minimally invasive tape suture construct (modified SpeedBridge™) as an alternative stabilization technique for the treatment of open book injuries in human cadaver pelvic rings. Materials and Methods: The symphysis of 9 human cadaver pelvises was dissected and dilated to 3 cm creating an open book injury. Next, the two osteosynthesis methods (plating, modified SpeedBridge™) were applied. All specimens then underwent cyclic horizontal and vertical loading, simulating biomechanical forces while sitting, standing and walking. For statistical analysis, 3D dislocation (mm) was calculated. Results: Total displacement (mm) of the pubic symphysis displayed the following means and standard deviations: native group 1.34 ± 0.62 mm, open book group 3.01 ± 1.26 mm, tape group 1.94 ± 0.59 mm and plate group 1.37 ± 0.41 mm. Comparison between native and open book (p = 0.029), open book and plate (p = 0.004), open book and tape (p = 0.031), as well as tape and plate group (p = 0.002) showed significant differences. No significant differences were found when comparing the native and tape (p = 0.059), as well as the native and plate (p = 0.999) group. Conclusion: While both osteosynthesis techniques sufficiently stabilized the injury, symphyseal plating displayed the highest rigidity. The modified SpeedBridge™ as a tape suture construct provided statistically sufficient biomechanical stability while maintaining symphyseal micro mobility, consequently allowing ligamental healing of the injured joint without iatrogenic arthrodesis. In recent years, medicine has been increasingly described as "Baconian", in reference to the scientific methodology laid out by Francis Bacon (1561–1626), who, in criticizing Aristotle's natural philosophy, called for cultivating useful knowledge in order to eradicate disease and extend human life by attenuating aging. Contemporary medicine is often described as "Baconian" insofar as it is devoted to the relief of suffering and the expansion of choice. These two features continue to exert pressure on medicine to expand understandings of both suffering and wellness. Recent attempts to reclassify human aging as a disease, for instance, bear witness to the Baconian impulse. In this article, I discuss and critique the religious origins of Bacon's call for a new kind of practical rationality in service of improving humanity, showing that they were deeply theological and considerably informed by events recorded in the biblical book of Genesis. I will also argue that the theological nature of Bacon's program, while theocentric in nature, suffers from inattention to Christology, which challenges Bacon's theology and the Baconian Project. Attending to Christological concerns modifies Bacon's approach to bioethics, which recognizes both the fallenness of creation and the power of medicine to address the human condition, especially human aging. Valeria Luiselli's Lost Children Archive (2019) explores how to find "lost children" who are forced to migrate and interrogates relationships among works of literature, archives, and archiving. Taking place contemporaneously with its publication, the novel follows Ma, Pa, and their two children who are stepsiblings on a road trip from New York City to the US Southwest. Along the way, characters take photographs, and, more unusually, record their own voices and the sounds of the environments they pass through. This article extends explorations of how sound works in the novel to how sound works as the novel by comparing the written text with the audiobook version. After situating the novel among discussions of how literature can contribute to archive making, employing Anne Gilliland and Michelle Caswell's notion of "impossible archival imaginaries" and Erica Johnson's notion of the "neo‐archive," the article shows that readers and audiobook listeners ultimately experience a different narrative. This comparison exposes a third layer of information that prompts questions about what can — and can't — be learned from written and oral records on their own. The article concludes proposing that this third layer of information suggests new possibilities for how literature can contribute to understandings of how archives can include the experiences of marginalized communities with more nuance and complexity. The article "What is not written in liturgical books" deals with old and new rituals in local church liturgy. Four examples of such rituals are mentioned: the Peace Light, the laying of the nativity scene, the burial of the cross, and the arrangement of the Gloria. These rituals are not recorded in liturgical books, but still play an important role in local liturgy. The article emphasizes that these rituals and customs represent an important part of popular piety and give prayer life a local and homely touch. [Extracted from the article]

Audiobooks have gained significant popularity in China and other regions worldwide. While scholars and practitioners have extensively researched strategies to develop the audiobook market, limited attention has been given to the factors influencing audiences' attitude toward audiobooks, which is a gap this study aimed to explore. Survey data was collected from a total of 537 consumers and analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling. The results indicate that experiencing telepresence and emotional connectedness while listening to audiobooks positively contributes to audiences' affective outcomes, fostering their favorable attitude. The findings also reveal that narrator performance, background music, and the narrative style of an audiobook can potentially enhance telepresence and emotional connectedness. Radio log book records are one of the significant deficiencies items in port state controls. This study attempts to reveal the legislative gaps in radio log book inspections and to prevent deficiencies related to radio log book records. To address this issue, the annual reports from 2015 to 2020 of nine MoUs are analysed, and the deficiencies of the radio log book records from 2016 to 2020 in the USCG inspections are determined. In order to identify the radio log book records correctly, international regulations are widely scrutinised. In addition to all of these investigations, experts' assessments are also consulted. Based on the investigation results, we derive three conclusions. First, according to Paris MoU data, 32.9% to 39.4% of the deficiencies in radio communication arise from radio log book records. Second, there are inadequate regulations on how to keep compulsory radio log book records. Third, some contradictions and uncertainties regarding the compulsory records are determined. While the act of listening to narratives has deep historical roots, it has gained renewed prominence in the contemporary literary landscape through the rise of audiobooks. Despite their resurgence, research on literary audiobooks, particularly within the realm of literary studies, remains notably limited. The audiobook has struggled to gain acceptance among the humanities as a legitimate aesthetic form, which can be attributed to the fact that it is often compared to the printed book as the leading medium for experiencing literature. By transforming a written text through the performativity of the voice into a spoken, analog, or digitally recorded, repeatable audio text, it becomes a completely different object of research that must be analyzed with different premises and approaches than the underlying written literary work. Nevertheless, literary analysis has predominantly focused on the visual and cognitive aspects of reading, thereby overlooking the auditory dimension. Especially in literary theory, there is a lack of both differentiated, proven descriptive criteria that take into account the specific auditory signification processes, including all the relevant paralinguistic features, and a theoretical foundation. This article aims to address this gap by developing a comprehensive framework for investigating the auditory reception of literature that seeks to elucidate the transition from reading to listening and its profound implications for the literary experience. By delving into the intricacies of auditory reception, literary theory can gain deeper insight into the cognitive and emotional facets of literary experiences, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of how individuals engage with literary works. Reviewing the still fragmented and nascent state of audiobook research, which barely focuses on the aspect of reception, the proposed framework explores five key dimensions: text, medium, listeners, situations and practices, and the resulting effects of auditory engagement with literature. Through a meticulous examination of these multifaceted factors, this article endeavors to provide a holistic understanding of the auditory reception of literary texts. Moreover, this avenue of research underscores the dynamic nature of literature, providing a richer perspective on the interplay between text, medium, recipients, situational context, and practices, thereby enriching the tapestry of literary theory. For example, a reexamination and customization of narratological categories is crucial, particularly concerning the incorporation of the physical voice, which is now actually present and independent of Genette's category ›voice‹. Similarly, the transition into the auditory medium necessitates a reevaluation of situational context and its associated practices. This reassessment is driven by the temporal co-occurrence of cognitive processes and physical activities, facilitated by the liberation of hands and eyes from their prior engagement with printed books. This contribution does not solely aim to establish a theoretical foundation for the research field and identify essential factors related to literary listening; instead, the framework is substantiated with empirical evidence drawn from diverse academic disciplines. This synthesis of empirical data and theory sheds light on audiobooks, offering an approach that transcends conventional research paradigms. Moreover, it underscores the need for interdisciplinary collaboration in the investigation of audiobooks. Ultimately, the integrative framework presented here serves as a foundation for further research, offering a nuanced and comprehensive approach and terminology for exploring the evolving landscape of listening to literature. The article aims to examine audiobooks as an innovative pedagogical tool for building key competencies in English foreign language teaching and learning, namely multilingual, digital, intercultural, personal, social and learning competence. Along with this, an empirical study of the attitudes of English language teachers towards the use of audiobooks in the process of foreign language teaching is presented. Starting from the theoretical foundations of the competence-based approach in education and passing through the competence-based approach in English foreign language teaching, the authors of the report put audiobooks at the center of their research as an effective and innovative didactic tool, the potential of which has remained unexplored until now for the construction of the overall linguistic competence of learners in learning English. Partially, this is due to the fact that foreign language teachers are still not familiar with and do not practically apply audiobooks in their pedagogical practice, as indicated by the data of the present study. This review is based investigations on the Western Isles, Scotland, by Martin Martin, a notable Scottish Highlander, academic and medical doctor, of the 17th–18th century. His extensive observations of the geography and peoples of these Isles were recorded in his books, "On the Description of the Western Islands of Scotland Circa 1695" and "A Late Voyage to St Kilda". In these books and subsequent papers there were some noteworthy observations on the occurrence (and as he says non-occurrence) of "epidemical" diseases and conditions afflicting the peoples of The Isle of Skye and the Western Isles of Scotland in this period, and these are discussed in this review. Martin also gives details of a wide variety of remedies that were observed or reported by inhabitants around that time. Some of these remedies are interesting for their relevance to the period but others are of doubtful merit. These are reviewed here more for their significance in the understanding of the diseases and conditions of humans and even in some cases animals at that time. Introductions by Charles Withers and R.W. Munro, 11 and re-assessments of the contributions of Martin and colleagues of that time have given insight into the health and condition of peoples of the Western Isles of Scotland(the Occidental) (Martin 1695; Martin 1716). The subject of the study is the issue of ordination law in the Prague, Olomouc, and Litomyšl dioceses in the Middle Ages. The legal rules that were published in provincial and diocesan synods and which regulated the form of ordination are presented. The oldest preserved order of ordination of the clergy is from the time of Bishop of Olomouc Henricus Zdík (1126-1150). Instructions for the ordination of the clergy are included, for example, in the pontifical of Bishop of Litomyšl Albert of Šternberk. Ordinations were recorded in ordination books, the Prague ordination books from the years 1395-1416 being a particularly valuable source. The Hussite revolution brought significant encroachment on the functioning of the church in the Prague archdiocese and in the Litomyšl diocese. The bishopric of Litomyšl was completely dissolved, while the Prague archbishopric was not occupied by an ordinary, which caused complications in the ordination of priests. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reading confers significant benefits to children in both social and academic domains. However, the number of children who read for pleasure is decreasing and has been shown to drop significantly between the ages of 8 and 9. Despite the rising popularity of audiobooks and podcasts, research on children's listening to spoken stories remains in its infancy. Thus, the present study explores how children engage with these realtively novel media. Fifty-two parents of children aged 8–13 years completed an online survey that asked about their children's listening habits. Results showed that 74% of children listen to spoken stories, with the vast majority (92.5%) listening at least 1–2 times per week. While the survey revealed children are engaging with both podcasts and audiobooks, being read aloud to continues to be the most popular format for story listening in this age group (77.4% of listeners). Across platforms, the genre most frequently listened to was fantasy stories (84.9%; more detailed descriptions of popular themes and sub-themes are described in text). In sum, access to technology is becoming an increasingly important part of children's lives. Part of a larger doctoral research focusing on audiobooks and their multiple aspects from the perspective of Intermedial Studies, this study aims to analyze how the semiotic hybridization that constitutes comics as a type of media is transmediated into the auditory signs of audio comics. In other words, how panels, dialogue balloons, and other visual elements are transformed and transferred (Elleström, 2021) into vocal performances, music and sound effects. Through this examination, we sought to demonstrate how these auditory media are capable of mediating different formats of audio comics. To illustrate this, we took examples from the audio comics The Boys (2020) and The Sandman (2020), with the former serving as an alternative way to access the content of the graphic novel by acting as an audio description, while the latter resembles a film without synchronized moving images. Finally, we discussed possible reasons why audio comics are still relatively unexplored in Brazil, despite the country's rich tradition of printed comics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
