13. COVID-19 pandemic experiences of secondary school students in Turkey

Abstract

This study aims at identifying secondary school students' life experiences during the coronavirus (covid-19) pandemic time. With the concept of life experiences used throughout the research; Students' views on their daily routines during the pandemic, changes in their lives, the precautions they take against the epidemic and their continuing education practices are expressed. Phenomenology, which is an approach to qualitative research, was adopted in this study. The study data were gathered through semi-structured interviews and analysed via content analysis. This study was carried out with a study group composed of students who were attending a state school in Turkey and who were included in the scope of lockdown. The study group was determined by criterion sampling, which is one of the purposeful sampling methods. The study group consisted of 20 students, 14 girls and 6 boys. Students' age ranged from 14 to 16 years old. Students are in the 7th and 8th grades of secondary school. According to the content analysis carried out within the framework of this study, secondary school students interpret covid-19 as unhealthiness and unusualness, they spend time at home indulging in academic pastime, daily routine and free time activities. They take necessary precautionary measures regarding hygiene, interpersonal contact and nourishment in order to protect themselves from covid-19 virus. As a result of the covid-19 pandemic, students' daily routines and perceptions have changed, and they have experienced positive and negative emotions in the face of these changes. They tend to receive social support, participate in leisure activities and use personal coping strategies to manage negative emotions and thoughts caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Purpose In the critically ill, hospital-acquired bloodstream infections (HA-BSI) are associated with significant mortality. Granular data are required for optimizing management, and developing guidelines and clinical trials. Results 2600 patients from 333 ICUs in 52 countries were included. 78% HA-BSI were ICU-acquired. Median Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score was 8 [IQR 5; 11] at HA-BSI diagnosis. Most frequent sources of infection included pneumonia (26.7%) and intravascular catheters (26.4%). Most frequent pathogens were Gram-negative bacteria (59.0%), predominantly Klebsiella spp. (27.9%), Acinetobacter spp. (20.3%), Escherichia coli (15.8%), and Pseudomonas spp. (14.3%). Carbapenem resistance was present in 37.8%, 84.6%, 7.4%, and 33.2%, respectively. Difficult-to-treat resistance (DTR) was present in 23.5% and pan-drug resistance in 1.5%. Antimicrobial therapy was deemed adequate within 24 h for 51.5%. Antimicrobial resistance was associated with longer delays to adequate antimicrobial therapy. Source control was needed in 52.5% but not achieved in 18.2%. Mortality was 37.1%, and only 16.1% had been discharged alive from hospital by day-28. Conclusions HA-BSI was frequently caused by Gram-negative, carbapenem-resistant and DTR pathogens. Antimicrobial resistance led to delays in adequate antimicrobial therapy. Mortality was high, and at day-28 only a minority of the patients were discharged alive from the hospital. Abstract

Fullerene C60 exhibits potent antioxidant anti-inflammatory activities as well as anticancer activities. In this study using 60 Wistar albino female rats (n = 60, 8 weeks old), they rats were divided into 4 groups, including 15 rats each. The groups were arranged as follows: (i) Control Group: Group fed with standard diet; (ii) C60 Group: C60 (1.7 mg/kg bw, oral gavage); (iii) DMBA (7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene) Group: DMBA (45 mg/kg bw, oral gavage); (iv) C60 and DMBA Group: C60 (1.7 mg/kg bw, oral gavage) and DMBA (45 mg/kg bw, oral gavage) group. DMBA increased the malondialdehyde levels in muscle tissue, while decreasing GSH and CAT levels; however, treatment with fullerene C60 reversed these effects. In addition, the oral administration of fullerene C60 increased caspase-3 and Nrf-2 protein expression and significantly decreased Bcl-2, NF-κB, TNF-α, COX-2 and p38α (MAPK) protein expression in C60 + DMBA compared to the DMBA group. Moreover, histopathological imaging revealed that the oral administration of fullerene C60 decreases inflammatory cells, edema formation, and hydropic degeneration in the muscles. Abstract

Carbapenemase‐producing gram‐negative bacteria (CP‐GNB) infections threaten public health with high mortality, morbidity and treatment costs. Although frequencies remain low in Australia (total number of CP‐GNB infections reported was 907 in 2022), blaIMP‐4 has established low levels of endemicity in many states. Imipenemase metallo‐β‐lactamase types alone accounted for more than half of all carbapenemases in carbapenemase‐producing Enterobacterales isolates in Australia, particularly in Enterobacter cloacae complex. New Delhi metallo‐β‐lactamase constitutes almost 25% of all carbapenemases in Australia and was identified predominantly in Escherichia coli. The OXA‐48‐like carbapenemases include almost 10% of all carbapenemases and are mainly seen in Klebsiella pneumoniae and E. coli. Although K. pneumoniae carbapenemase‐type carbapenemases are rare in Australia, some local outbreaks have occurred. Most carbapenem‐resistant (CR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains in Australia do not produce carbapenemases. Finally, OXA‐23‐like carbapenemases are overwhelmingly positive in CR‐Acinetobacter baumannii strains in Australia. Treatment of CR‐GNB infections challenges physicians. Of 10 new antibiotics active against at least some CR‐GNB infections that are approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, just three are approved for use in Australia. In this context, there is still an unmet need for novel antibacterials that can be used for the treatment of CR‐GNB infections in Australia, as well as a pressing requirement for new mechanisms to 'de‐link' antibiotic sales from their availability. Abstract

Introduction: Caring for gastrointestinal cancer patients can be demanding and to some, caregivers, burdensome; resulting in them having low quality of life (QOL) and thus they may become the next potential patients. Hence, true heartfelt experiences need to be captured to highlight issues and preventive measures that are not voiced out as most often caregiving is done in silence and out of responsibility. Therefore, this study aimed to explore on the caregivers’ insights on how caregiving experience has resulted in their low QOL. Methods: Seven family caregivers were purposively selected from two oncology centres in the Klang Valley, Malaysia for this qualitative case study. The selection was based on the low scores obtained from Malay Caregiver Quality of Life Cancer (MCQOL) questionnaire during an initial cross-sectional study. Following that, in-depth interviews were performed on those selected caregivers. Interview data were triangulated with the questionnaire and observations for validity. Member and expert checking were conducted to ensure credibility and trustworthiness. A thematic content analysis was later performed. Results: Thematic analysis revealed four distinct contributors to the caregivers’ QOL; namely, patients’ financial and stress management; impact towards physical, psychological, social (including relationship) wellbeing, communication; and support from families, organisation and community. Conclusion: The qualitative study discovered evidence for collaborative support needed to ensure better QOL for the caregivers.
