A study published in the Bulletin of The Royal College of Surgeons of England has developed a simulation model for training healthcare professionals in managing post-thyroidectomy hematoma, a potentially life-threatening complication. The homemade simulation model, which involves an actor and an assistant, demonstrated good face validity and content validity. Participants agreed that the model taught transferable skills and should be included in training programs. Tremendous popularity is observed for multifunctional flexible electronics with appealing applications in intelligent electronic skins, human–machine interfaces, and healthcare sensing. However, the reported sensing electronics, mostly can hardly provide ultrasensitive sensing sensitivity, wider sensing range, and robust cycling stability simultaneously, and are limited of efficient heat conduction out from the contacted skin interface after wearing flexible electronics on human skin to satisfy thermal comfort of human skin. Inspired from the ultrasensitive tactile perception microstructure (epidermis/spinosum/signal transmission) of human skin, a flexible comfortably wearable ultrasensitive electronics is hereby prepared from thermal conductive boron nitride nanosheets‐incorporated polyurethane elastomer matrix with MXene nanosheets‐coated surface microdomes as epidermis/spinosum layers assembled with interdigitated electrode as sensing signal transmission layer. It demonstrates appealing sensing performance with ultrasensitive sensitivity (≈288.95 kPa−1), up to 300 kPa sensing range, and up to 20 000 sensing cycles from obvious contact area variation between microdome microstructures and the contact electrode under external compression. Furthermore, the bioinspired electronics present advanced thermal management by timely efficient thermal dissipation out from the contacted skin surface to meet human skin thermal comfort with the incorporated thermal conductive boron nitride nanosheets. Nanocomposite hydrogels (NHs) have emerged as a groundbreaking tool in biomedical applications, offering remarkable versatility and efficacy. Integrating a wide range of nanoparticles, including carbon-based, polymeric, ceramic, and metallic nanomaterials, within hydrogel networks results in nanocomposites with superior properties and tailored functionalities. Recent research has highlighted their potential to address key challenges in drug delivery, cancer therapy, tissue regeneration, biosensing, and wound healing, outstanding to their biocompatibility and bioavailability. Nanohydrogels demonstrate significant promise in drug delivery systems and biological sensors, providing sustained therapeutic activity at targeted sites. This reduces the frequency of drug administration and minimizes the harmful side effects. In the healthcare sector, they have applications ranging from cancer therapy to aesthetic corrections and are a leading topic in tissue regeneration research. Research suggested that color vision evolved for the purpose of seeing skin color modulations signaling emotion or mood. Hence people want to find the connection of the cone sensitivities with the skin spectral reflectance. In this article the W and V shapes based on skin spectral reflectance measured at different positions and from different ethnic groups (Kurdish, Caucasian, Thai, Chinese) were investigated. First, it was found that the measured skin spectral reflectance from all body positions and ethnic groups have a V shape between 400 and 450 nm and a W shape between 520 and 610 nm. The W and V shapes from the measured skin spectral reflectance are clearly different from those from the spectral reflectance generated from the physical model. The V shape and W shape do not exist with spectral reflectances measured from artificial skin color. Second, it was found that the wavelengths where the left trough assumes for the W shape are different from the wavelength where the M cone peaks, and the wavelengths where the central peak of the W shape assumes are different from the wavelength where the L cone peaks, which are different from the results from literature. Third, it was found that the skin spectral reflectance varies with body positions and ethnic groups. The W shapes turn to be a “U” shape for the spectral reflectance measured at back of the hand and inner forearm positions. The spectral reflectance measured from Kurdish starts decreasing for each body positions for wavelength greater than 700 nm, which is clearly different from the spectral reflectance measured from the Chinese and Caucasian ethnic groups. The findings of this paper are valuable for improving the physical model for generating skin spectral reflectance, reconstructing skin spectral reflectance based on image, identifying human skin color from spectral imaging and rendering of human skin color in computer graphics. Hydrogel devices with mechanical toughness and tunable functionalities are highly desirable for practical long‐term applications such as sensing and actuation elements for soft robotics. However, existing hydrogels have poor mechanical properties, slow rates of response, and low functionality. In this work, two‐dimensional hydrogel actuators are proposed and formed on the self‐assembly of graphene oxide (GO) and deoxynucleic acid (DNA). The self‐assembly process is driven by the GO‐induced transition of double stranded DNA (dsDNA) into single stranded DNA (ssDNA). Thus, the hydrogel's structural unit consists of two layers of GO covered by ssDNA and a layer of dsDNA in between. Such heterogeneous architectures stabilized by multiple hydrogen bondings have Young's modulus of up to 10 GPa and rapid swelling rates of 4.0 × 10−3 to 1.1 × 10−2 s−1, which surpasses most types of conventional hydrogels. It is demonstrated that the GO/DNA hydrogel actuators leverage the unique properties of these two materials, making them excellent candidates for various applications requiring sensing and actuation functions, such as artificial skin, wearable electronics, bioelectronics, and drug delivery systems. Plants contain many useful substances; however, their availability and uniformity are constrained. Controlled cell culture is attracting attention as a method for identifying useful substances with better quality control than conventional plant extraction techniques. Artificial skin is widely used as an alternative to animal testing to evaluate the safety and efficacy of cosmetic materials. The Damnacanthus major Siebold & Zucc is an evergreen shrub of the madder family, and the anthraquinone series substances present in its roots have antioxidant and whitening effects, implying its potential to be used in cosmetics. In this study, the antioxidant, moisturizing, and phototoxic properties of the ethanol extract of its callus were assessed using an artificial skin alternative. It showed a distinct antioxidant effect over 600 μg/mL and a moisturizing effect over 125 μg/mL. Phospho-extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 and cAMP response element-binding protein were found to be upregulated in the artificial skin due to the moisturizing mechanism, and phospho-NFκB repressing factor was observed to be upregulated in human epidermal keratinocytes (HaCaT cells) due to the antioxidant mechanism. Additionally, analysis of the artificial skin revealed no phototoxicity up to 1 mg/mL. Firefighters face significant risks of exposure to toxic chemicals, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), during fire suppression activities. PAHs have been found in the air, on the gear and equipment, and in biological samples such as the skin, breath, urine, and blood of firefighters after fire response. However, the extent to which exposure occurs via inhalation, dermal absorption, or ingestion is unclear. In this study, three PAHs, naphthalene, phenanthrene, and benzo[a]pyrene, were applied to porcine skin in vitro in an artificial sweat solution to better gauge firefighters' dermal exposures while mimicking their sweaty skin conditions using an artificial sweat dosing vehicle. Multiple absorption characteristics were calculated, including cumulative absorption, percent dose absorbed, diffusivity, flux, lag time, and permeability. The absorption of the PAHs was greatly influenced by their molecular weight and solubility in the artificial sweat solution. Naphthalene had the greatest dose absorption efficiency (35.0 ± 4.6% dose), followed by phenanthrene (6.8 ± 3.2% dose), and lastly, benzo[a]pyrene, which had the lowest absorption (0.03 ± 0.04% dose). The lag times followed a similar trend. All chemicals had a lag time of approximately 60 min or longer, suggesting that chemical concentrations on the skin may be reduced by immediate skin cleansing practices after fire exposure. The emergence of cutting‐edge cross‐disciplines has motivated the rapid development of wearable technology and flexible electronics. The flexibility and tunable properties of organic materials enable organic flexible electronics to adapt to complex surface deformations and achieve sensitive detection of physiological signals. The cost‐effectiveness of organic materials in mass production offers additional possibilities for the practical and commercialization of e‐skin technology. However, how to ensure stability and long‐term reliability while maintaining a highly sensitive, flexible, and stretchable is a challenge for e‐skins. In this review, the research progress and development trend of e‐skin is systematically summarized, especially the latest breakthroughs and innovations in the frontier of organic flexible electronics, and systematically review the applications of e‐skin in sensors, physiological monitoring, and energy supply. In addition, the review further discusses the prospects and current challenges for the application of organic flexible electronics in e‐skin, which provides a one‐stop reference for the development of e‐skin. Hereditary cystatin C amyloid angiopathy (HCCAA) is an Icelandic disease that belongs to a disease class called cerebral amyloid angiopathy, a group of heterogenous diseases presenting with aggregation of amyloid complexes and deposition predominantly in the central nervous system. HCCAA is dominantly inherited, caused by L68Q mutation in the cystatin C gene, leading to aggregation of the cystatin C protein. HCCAA is a very progressive and severe disease, with widespread cerebral and parenchymal cystatin C and collagen IV deposition within the central nervous system (CNS) but also in other organs in the body, for example, in the skin. Most L68Q carriers have clinical symptoms characterized by recurrent hemorrhages and dementia, between the age of 20–30 years. If the carriers survive the first hemorrhage, the frequency and severity of the hemorrhages tend to increase, resulting in death at average of 30 years with mean number of major hemorrhages ranging from 3.2 to 3.9 over a 5‐year average life span. The pathogenesis of the disease in carriers is very similar in the CNS and in the skin based on autopsy studies, thus skin biopsies can be used to monitor the progression of the disease by quantifying the cystatin C immunoreactivity. The cystatin C deposition always colocalizes with collagen IV and fibroblasts in the skin are found to be the main cell type responsible for the deposition of both proteins. In this paper, we introduce an innovative approach for generating robotic faces with a thermal signature similar to that of humans and equipping prosthetic or robotic hands with a lifelike temperature distribution. This approach enhances their detection via infrared cameras and promotes more natural interactions between humans and robots. This method integrates a temperature regulation system into artificial skin, drawing inspiration from the human body's natural temperature control via blood flow. Central to this technique is a fiber network simulating blood vessels within the artificial skin. Water flows through these fibers under specific temperature and flow conditions, forming a controlled heat release system. The heat emission can be adjusted by changing the dilation of these fibers, primarily by modulating the frequency of circulation. Our findings indicate that this approach can replicate the varied thermal characteristics of different human faces and hand areas. Consequently, the robotic faces appear more human-like in infrared images, aiding their identification by infrared cameras. At the same time, the prosthetic hands achieve a more natural temperature, reducing the discomfort typically felt in direct contact with synthetic limbs. The aim of this study was to address the challenges faced by the users of prosthetic hands. The results from this study show a promising direction in humanoid robotics, fostering improved tactile interactions and redefining human–robot relationships. This innovative technique facilitates further advancements, blurring the lines between artificial aids and natural biological systems. Robotic faces and hands with human-like thermal infrared emission and physiological temperature are achieved by replicating the circulatory system's inherent temperature regulation mechanism. Interactive Medical Image Segmentation (IMIS) aims to improve the accuracy of image segmentation by incorporating human guidance, primarily through click‐based interactions. IMIS for skin lesion segmentation is a challenging task because the edges of lesion regions on the skin are often ambiguous, and training IMIS models requires the generation of pseudo‐clicks to simulate human clicks. Most previous methods generate pseudo‐clicks by sampling from the entire mis‐segmented region. However, such clicks are inconsistent with human behavior, resulting in performance degradation, particularly for skin lesion segmentation. In this study, we address this issue by integrating human preference into the process of generating pseudo clicks to train the segmentation model, which is simple yet effective. Specifically, through a user study, we find that people are more inclined to click on larger mis‐segmented regions during interactive segmentation. Inspired by this, a roulette selection strategy is used to generate the pseudo‐clicks based on the area of the mis‐segmented subregions. Our proposed method, BehaviorClick, can be easily integrated with existing interactive segmentation models to improve the performance. The accuracy improvement on four dermoscopic datasets under six state‐of‐the‐art interactive segmentation methods is confirmed, which demonstrates the generalizability and effectiveness of our approach. © 2024 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan and Wiley Periodicals LLC. Monitoring tactile pressure and recognizing action are important functionalities for artificial electronic skin (e‐skin). Furthermore, in order to create conformable coverings for 3D objects, an e‐skin needs to be stretchable, without sacrificing sensitivity to tactile pressure. However, stretching of sensors normally affects their output stability. In this study, a stretchable e‐skin is developed using laser‐induced graphene and a liquid metal alloy, GaInSn, in an elastic ecoflex polymer to create a stretchable, resistive‐type tactile pressure sensor. Furthermore, a pressure sensor array is fabricated as an e‐skin, and output is signal‐processed using machine learning. With this system, the e‐skin also monitors its stretching state, with the result that tactile pressure can be calculated regardless of the degree of stretching. With machine learning‐assisted e‐skin, actions such as patting, sliding, and grabbing are successfully recognized in the manner of human skin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Smart materials that respond to external stimuli are useful for applications ranging from artificial skin to sensing to cosmetics. Inspired by natural phenomena (self‐healing, shape memory, and shrinking), this work develops a novel smart bio‐composite using sustainable polyurethane (PU) and sugarcane bagasse (SB) waste without using a solvent. PU is synthesized using polycaprolactone (PCL) diol, castor oil (CO) as a polyol, and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) as diisocyanate. Composites are prepared using PU and SB in the presence and absence of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and are denoted as PBA and PB, respectively. TGA and DSC analysis indicate the broad (−68.4 °C to 192 °C) thermal stability of these materials. PBA and PB composites exhibited relatively fast (20–30 min) self‐healing and high shape fixity ratio (Rf) (70–83%), and shape recovery ratio (Rr) (82–100%) at 60 °C in the air. Furthermore, PBA shows hot water‐responsive rapid 100% shape recovery and also exhibits thermoresponsive shrinkage properties like human skin. PBA lifts a material 13.3±2 % of its original length by utilizing its thermoresponsive shrinking property. These inexpensive materials with self‐healing, shape recovery, high thermal stability, and thermo‐responsive properties are attractive and may be useful in artificial skin, sensor, and coating applications. Artificial skins or flexible pressure sensors that mimic human cutaneous mechanoreceptors transduce tactile stimuli to quantitative electrical signals. Conventional trial-and-error designs for such devices follow a forward structure-to-property routine, which is usually time-consuming and determines one possible solution in one run. Data-driven inverse design can precisely target desired functions while showing far higher productivity, however, it is still absent for flexible pressure sensors because of the difficulties in acquiring a large amount of data. Here, we report a property-to-structure inverse design of flexible pressure sensors, exhibiting a significantly greater efficiency than the conventional routine. We use a reduced-order model that analytically constrains the design scope and an iterative "jumping-selection" method together with a surrogate model that enhances data screening. As an exemplary scenario, hundreds of solutions that overcome the intrinsic signal saturation have been predicted by the inverse method, validating for a variety of material systems. The success in property design on multiple indicators demonstrates that the proposed inverse design is an efficient and powerful tool to target multifarious applications of flexible pressure sensors, which can potentially advance the fields of intelligent robots, advanced healthcare, and human-machine interfaces. Electronic skins are expected to replicate a human‐like tactile sense, which significantly detects surface information, including geometry, material, and temperature. Although most texture features can be sensed in the horizontal direction, the lack of effective approaches for detecting vertical properties limits the development of artificial skin based on tactile sensors. In this study, an all‐printed finger‐inspired tactile sensor array is developed to realize the 3D detection and reconstruction of microscale structures. A beam structure with a suspended multilayer membrane is proposed, and a tactile sensor array of 12 units arranged in a dual‐column layout is developed. This architecture enables the tactile sensor array to obtain comprehensive geometric information of micro‐textures, including 3D morphology and clearance characteristics, and optimizes the 3D reconstruction patterns by self‐calibration. Moreover, an innovative screen‐printing technology incorporating multilayer printing and sacrificial‐layer techniques is adopted to print the entire device. In additon, a Braille recognition system utilizing this tactile sensor array is developed to interpret Shakespeare's quotes printed in Grade 2 Braille. The abovementioned demonstrations reveal an attractive future vision for endowing bioinspired robots with the unique capability of touching and feeling the microscale real world and reconstructing it in the cyber world. Recent advances in regenerative medicine provide encouraging strategies to produce artificial skin substitutes. Gelatin scaffolds are successfully used as wound-dressing materials due to their superior properties, such as biocompatibility and the ability to mimic the extracellular matrix of the surrounding environment. In this study, five gelatin combination solutions were prepared and successfully electrospun using an electrospinning technique. After careful screening, the optimal concentration of the most promising combination was selected for further investigation. The obtained scaffolds were crosslinked with 25% glutaraldehyde vapor and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The incorporation of antibiotic agents such as ciprofloxacin hydrochloride and gentamicin sulfate into gelatin membranes improved the already existing antibacterial properties of antibiotic-free gelatin scaffolds against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. Also, the outcomes from the in vivo model study revealed that skin regeneration was significantly accelerated with gelatin/ciprofloxacin scaffold treatment. Moreover, the gelatin nanofibers were found to strongly promote the neoangiogenic process in the in vivo chick embryo chorioallantoic membrane assay. Finally, the combination of gelatin's extracellular matrix and antibacterial agents in the scaffold suggests its potential for effective wound-healing treatments, emphasizing the importance of gelatin scaffolds in tissue engineering. There are current studies on kinesio taping (KT) application after total knee arthroplasty (TKA), but there is no definite consensus on its effectiveness and application method yet. This study aims to evaluates the effectiveness of KT applied added to the conservative postoperative physiotherapy program (CPPP) after TKA on postoperative edema, pain, range of motion, and functions on the early period. This prospective, randomized, controlled, double-blind study was conducted in with 187 patients undergoing TKA. The patients were divided into 3 groups as kinesio taping (KTG), sham taping (STG) and control group (CG). KT lymphedema technique and epidermis, dermis, fascia technique were applied on the 1st and 3rd days postoperatively. Extremity circumference and joint range of motion (ROM) were measured. Visual Analog Scale, Oxford Knee Scale filled. All patients were evaluated preoperatively, on the 1st day, 3rd day, and 10th day postoperatively. There were 62 patients in CTG, 62 patients in STG, and 63 patients in CG. In all circumference measurements, the difference between post-op10th day (PO10D) diameter and preoperative diameter measurement was less in KTG than in CG and STG (p < 0.001). CG was higher than the STG in the ROM values measured at PO10D.There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of OKS values (P:0.648). CG was higher than STG in post-op 1st day VAS values (P:0.042). Adding KT to CPP after TKA reduces edema in the acute phase, but has no additive effect on pain, functionality, and ROM. Human fingers possess stable high sensitivity and a wide range of tactile perception, attributed to the gradient microstructure and the interlocking collagen fiber on the skin's surface. However, challenges persist in achieving simultaneous enhancement of multiple functionalities in artificial skin. Inspired by the unique structure of the skin, a two‐step process involving ion diffusion‐induced and strong‐weak topological crosslinking is synergistically employed to fabricate a bilayer gradient hydrogel. Zn2+ initially diffuses to induce the formation of weak bonds, imparting elasticity. Subsequently, Fe3+/Zn2+ diffusion constructs a strong‐weak topologically crosslinked network, enhancing the toughness of the gel while reducing the brittleness associated with robust bonds. Due to its distinctive design, the gel employs an adaptive energy dissipation strategy subjected to large and small stress, ensuring high sensitivity (3.31 kPa−1, 0–2 kPa), wide sensing range (0.4–40.6 kPa), and exceptional stability (500 cycles). This flexible approach enables programmable design in three dimensions, including ion diffusion type, direction, and shape. This gel can detect the gentle brushing of feathers and human body movements. It utilizes significant differences generated by magnitudes of stress to perform binary information encryption. Background: Microneedles are tiny needles, typically ranging from tens to hundreds of micrometers in length, used in various medical procedures and treatments. The tested medical device named "CELLADEEP Patch" a dissolvable microneedle therapy system (MTS), made of hyaluronic acid and collagen. And the iontophoresis technique is also applied in the system. The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the "CELLADEEP Patch" in skin improvement. Methods: Ex vivo human‐derived skin tissue models were used in this study and they were divided into three different groups, namely, the Untreated Group, the Negative Control Group, and the Test Group respectively. The Untreated Group received no treatment measures, the Negative Control Group was exposed to ultraviolet B radiation (UVB) irradiation, and the Test Group was exposed to UVB irradiation and treated with "CELLADEEP Patch". Skin moisture content, transdermal water loss, and skin elasticity were evaluated by three clinical devices. Additionally, histological staining and related mRNA expression levels were also analyzed. Results: The results of skin moisture content, transdermal water loss, and skin elasticity evaluation consistently illustrated that the application of "CELLADEEP Patch" led to remarkable skin improvement. And the analysis of histological staining images also confirmed the effectiveness of the "CELLADEEP Patch", especially for increasing collagen density. Moreover, the upregulation of Collagen type 1 a (COL1A1) and hyaluronan synthase 3 mRNA expression and the decrease of Matrix metalloproteinase 1 (MMP‐1) and Interleukin‐1 beta (IL‐1β) mRNA expression reflected its wrinkle improvement, moisturizing and anti‐inflammation function. Conclusion: "CELLADEPP Patch", the MTS combined with the iontophoresis technique, exhibits its effectiveness in moisturizing, skin elasticity improvement, and anti‐inflammatory function when applied to ex vivo human‐derived skin tissue models in experiments. Ongoing obstacles in preclinical drug testing have raised significant concerns within the pharmaceutical industry. Recently, utilizing the potential of three‐dimensional (3D) bioprinting offers a solution for creating tissue models for screening of the effectiveness and safety of new drugs. In this study, the anti‐inflammatory potential of garlic extracts is assessed, specifically N‐Benzyl‐N‐methyl‐dodecan‐1‐amine (BMDA), using a 3D bioprinted artificial skin model. Comprehensive physicochemical characterization and immunocytochemical analysis demonstrate that the 3D bioprinted skin model exhibits structures and functions resembling human skin. BMDA treatment in a prepared skin model reveals its capacity to mitigate H2O2‐induced oxidative stress and trigger anti‐inflammatory responses. Notably, BMDA reduces the expression of pro‐inflammatory cytokines and chemokines by downregulating NF‐κB and mitogen‐activated protein kinase inflammatory signaling pathways. Background: Australia is known for its outdoor culture, with a large percentage of its population engaging in outdoor recreational activities, aquatic, non-aquatic and outdoor occupational activities. However, these outdoor enthusiasts face increased exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR), leading to a higher risk of skin cancer, including malignant melanoma (MM). Over the past 40 years, there has been a significant rise in skin cancer rates in Australia, with two out of three Australians expected to develop some form of skin cancer by age 70. Currently, skin cancer examinations are not endorsed in asymptomatic or low-risk individuals in Australia, with only high-risk individuals recommended to undergo regular skin examinations. Notably, the Melanoma Institute Australia suggests that one-half of patients identify MMs themselves, although this claim appears to be based on limited Australian data which may not reflect contemporary practice. Therefore this study sought to determine the percentage of patients who were able to self-identify MMs as lesions of concern when presenting for a skin cancer examination. Methods: Multi-site, cross-sectional study design incorporating a descriptive survey and total body skin cancer screening, including artificial intelligence by a skin cancer doctor. Results: A total of 260 participants with suspect MM lesions were biopsied, with 83 (31.9%) found to be melanomas. Of the true positive MMs only a small percentage of participants (21.7% specificity) correctly had concerns about the suspect lesion being a MM. These MMs were located primarily on the back (44.4%), shoulder (11.1%) and upper leg (11.1%). There was no significant difference in the size between those participants aware of a MM versus those who were not (P = 0.824, 24.6 vs 23.4 mm2). Significantly more males identified lesions of concern that were MMs as compared to females (P = 0.008, 61.1% vs 38.9%, respectively). With regard to true negatives males and females were similar (52.1% vs 47.9%, respectively). With regard to false negatives (n = 65), a greater percentage of males than females did not recognize the MM as a lesion of concern (66.2% vs 33.8%, respectively). Participants were more likely to correctly identify an invasive MM as opposed to an in situ MM (27.3% versus 21.3%). Conclusions: Only a small percentage of participants in this study were able to self-identify either in situ or invasive MM as a lesion of concern with a tendency to identify the more advanced, thicker MMs. Given that MM is associated with a high mortality and cost of treatment, particularly when invasive, the inability of lay persons to identify these cancerous lesions will likely lead to delayed treatment and a possible adverse outcome. We believe the current melanoma screening practices in Australian general practice should be revisited to improve patient outcomes with regard to MM. Dermal substitutes have been introduced to improve the outcome of wound healing. Despite proven efficacy in trials, these skin constructs do not have a firm footing in treatment protocols. This survey aimed to gain insight into the international perspective on dermal substitutes. An open, voluntary and anonymous internet‐based international survey was conducted. Eligible to complete the survey were professionals involved in the surgical treatment of patients with wounds. Information was collected on participant demographics, appointed facilitators, barriers, indications and contraindications related to the use of dermal substitutes, as well as participants' perceptions on the current available evidence and treatment protocols. A total of 148 professionals from 30 countries completed the survey. The majority of participants were male (57%), with 60% being plastic surgeons. Eighty‐three percent of the professionals had experience in using dermal substitutes. The primary facilitators were 'increased scar elasticity' and 'reduction of contractures', while primary barriers included 'costs' and 'contamination risk'. Sixty‐two percent of the professionals acknowledged the efficacy of dermal substitutes; however, the majority emphasised the absence of clear indications and treatment protocols. Purpose: Electron spin resonance (ESR) is used to measure oxygen partial pressure (pO2) in biological media with many clinical applications. Traditional clinical ESR involves large magnets that encompass the subject of measurement. However, certain applications might benefit from a scanner operating within local static magnetic fields. Our group recently developed such a compact scanner for transcutaneous (surface) pO2 measurements of skin tissue. Here we extend this capability to subsurface (subcutaneous) pO2 measurements and verify it using an artificial tissue emulating (ATE) phantom. Methods: We introduce a new scanner, tailored for subcutaneous measurements up to 2 mm beneath the skin's surface. This scanner captures pulsed ESR signals from embedded approximate 1‐mm oxygen‐sensing solid paramagnetic implant, OxyChip. The scanner features a static magnetic field source, producing a uniform region outside its surface, and a compact microwave resonator, for exciting and receiving ESR signals. Results: ESR readings derived from an OxyChip, positioned approximately 1.5 mm from the scanner's surface, embedded in ATE phantom, exhibited a linear relation of 1/T2 versus pO2 for pO2 levels at 0, 7.6, 30, and 160 mmHg, with relative reading accuracy of about 10%. Conclusion: The compact ESR scanner can report pO2 data in ATE phantom from an external position relative to the scanner. Implementing this scanner in preclinical and clinical applications for subcutaneous pO2 measurements is a feasible next phase for this development. A double‐blind, randomized clinical trial involving female participants aged 30–70 years assessed the wrinkle‐reducing effectiveness of face creams formulated with two concentrations of PAPE (1.5% and 3%) over a 28‐day period.In vitro studies indicated that PAPE could modulate inflammation and tissue remodeling biomarkers. The clinical trial demonstrated that applying PAPE‐enriched cream resulted in significant wrinkle reduction, with 25% and 34% improvements for the 1.5% and 3% PAPE formulations, respectively. AbstractMicroneedles, as a new efficient and safe transdermal drug delivery technology, has a wide range of applications in drug delivery, vaccination, medical cosmetology, and diagnostics. The degree of microneedles penetration into the skin determines the reliability of the delivery dose, but its evaluation is not yet well-established, which is one of the major constraints in the commercialization of microneedles. In this paper, a novel visual simulated skin model was developed with reference to the physical properties of real skin. The simulated skin model was well-designed and its prescription was optimized to make the thickness, hardness, elasticity, and other parameters close to those of real skin. Interest in flexible photonics has been motivated by the development of artificial smart skins. In particular, coupling of photonics and mechanics can offer opportunities to realize ultrasensitive strain sensor, however, low‐cost fabrication of flexible sensing device with desired photonic functionality remains a challenge. Hereby, the study reports an ultrasensitive strain‐gauge sensor based on the poly(ethylenenaphthalate (PEN))/monocrystal Au/MgF2/CsPbBr3 nanorod/Al2O3/polyacrylonitrile (in short P/mAu/M/CPB@Al2O3@PAN), which are sensitive to nanoscale structure alterations of PEN substrate via the stress response of the single‐mode laser based on the piezoelectric‐effect. Wherein a low‐threshold single‐mode lasing (Pth ≈ 170 nJ cm−2) is achieved through coating Al2O3 on the CsPbBr3 nanorod, producing the higher quality factor (Q ≈ 1637) to guarantee a much higher sensitivity in sensing application. Reversible spectral regulating of ≈3 nm in single‐mode‐lasing wavelength, with a subnanometre scale resolution <0.4 nm and the wavelength sensitivity (Sλ) as high as 160 nm RIU−1, is validated in response to applied strain ranging from −1.31% to 1.31%. This work not only represents essential progress in construction of ultrasensitive and cost‐effective flexible photonic sensor, but also lays the foundation for the potential application in smart photonic skins. Tactile sensors have garnered considerable interest for their capacity to detect and quantify tactile information. The incorporation of microstructural designs into flexible tactile sensors has emerged as a potent strategy to augment their sensitivity to pressure variations, thereby enhancing their linearity, response spectrum, and mechanical robustness. This review underscores the imperative for progress in microstructured flexible tactile sensors. Subsequently, the discourse transitions to the prevalent materials employed in the fabrication of sensor electrodes, encapsulation layers, and active sensing mediums, elucidating their merits and limitations. In‐depth discussions are devoted to tactile sensors adorned with microstructures, including but not limited to, micropyramids, microhemispheres, micropillars, microporous configurations, microcracks, topological interconnections, multilevel constructs, random roughness, biomimetic microstructures inspired by flora and fauna, accompanied by exemplar studies from each category. Moreover, the utility of flexible tactile sensors within the realm of intelligent environments is explicated, highlighting their application in the monitoring of physiological signals, the detection of sliding motions, and the discernment of surface textures. Owing to the potentially irritant nature of chemical ingredient in cosmetics, harmless photonic crystal tattoo (HPCT) materials with angle‐independent structural color have shown great promise in cosmetic industry. However, it still remains a challenge to produce artificial photonic crystal materials with good adherence to biological cutaneous tissue. Herein, a photonic crystal tattoo based on SiO2 nanoparticles/silk fibroin (SiO2 NPs/SF) is reported. With the SF solution addition of 55.8%, the 180° peel strength and nanoindentation adhesion force of product increased by 427.4% and 103.9%, respectively. Finally, as proof of concept, its applications for creating tattoo with optical pattern on artificial skin were shown. In order to solve the problem of flexible sliding tactile composite sensing in the actual grasp of intelligent robot fingers, this paper proposes a research on a convex fiber grating tactile sliding sensor based on mechanical fingers. Based on the sensing principle of fiber Bragg grating, 3D printing technology was used to encapsulate the FBG sensor array with elastic 50 A resin, a double-layer "hemispherical cuboid" distributed sensing unit was designed, and the FBG slippery tactile sensor was actually pasted on the surface of the mechanical finger for static and dynamic experiments. The experimental results show that the slippery tactile sensor designed in this paper has a good linear relationship with temperature and strain. The temperature sensitivities of the polymer-packaged FBGs are K T 1 = 13.04 pm/°C and K T 2 = 12.91 pm/°C, and they have a pressure sensitivity of 40.4 pm/N and 31.2 pm/N, respectively. The FBG sliding tactile sensor not only realizes the identification of the sliding signal generation point and the end point but also completes the classification and identification of sandpaper, cardboard, and polypropylene plastic, and it has a high degree of fit with the robot finger, which has certain application value for the intelligent robot sliding tactile signal perception. The progress in flexible and neuromorphic electronics technologies has facilitated the development of artificial perception systems. By closely emulating biological functions, these systems are at the forefront of revolutionizing intelligent robotics and refining the dynamics of human–machine interactions. Among these, tactile sensory neuromorphic technologies stand out for their ability to replicate the intricate architecture and processing mechanisms of the brain. This replication not only facilitates remarkable computational efficiency but also equips devices with efficient real-time data-processing capability, which is a cornerstone in artificial intelligence evolution and human–machine interface enhancement. Herein, we highlight recent advancements in neuromorphic systems designed to mimic the functionalities of the human tactile sensory system, a critical component of somatosensory functions. After discussing the tactile sensors which biomimic the mechanoreceptors, insights are provided to integrate artificial synapses and neural networks for advanced information recognition emphasizing the efficiency and sophistication of integrated system. It showcases the evolution of tactile recognition biomimicry, extending beyond replicating the physical properties of human skin to biomimicking tactile sensations and efferent/afferent nerve functions. These developments demonstrate significant potential for creating sensitive, adaptive, plastic, and memory-capable devices for human-centric applications. Moreover, this review addresses the impact of skin-related diseases on tactile perception and the research toward developing artificial skin to mimic sensory and motor functions, aiming to restore tactile reception for perceptual challenged individuals. Skin yellowness is a hallmark of dull or unhealthy skin, particularly among Asians. Previous research has indicated a link between skin glycation and skin yellowness. However, the specific glycated chemicals contributing to yellowish skin appearance have not been identified yet. Using HPLC-PDA-HRMS coupled with native and artificially glycated human epidermal explant skin, we identified intensely yellow colored glycated chromophores "(1R, 8aR) and (1S, 8aR)-4-(2-furyl)-7-[(2-furyl)-methylidene]-2-hydroxy-2H,7H,8AH-pyrano-[2,3-B]-pyran-3-one" (abbreviated as AGEY) from human skin samples for the first time. The abundance of AGEY was strongly correlated with skin yellowness in the multiple skin explant tissues. We further confirmed the presence of AGEY in cultured human keratinocytes and 3D reconstructed human epidermal (RHE) models. Additionally, we demonstrated that a combination of four cosmetic compounds with anti-glycation properties can inhibit the formation of AGEY and reduce yellowness in the RHE models. In conclusion, we have identified specific advanced glycation end products with an intense yellow color, namely AGEY, in human skin tissues for the first time. The series of study results highlighted the significant contribution of AGEY to the yellow appearance of the skin. The neuroTac, a neuromorphic visuo-tactile sensor that leverages the high temporal resolution of event-based cameras, is ideally suited to applications in robotic manipulators and prosthetic devices. In this paper, we pair the neuroTac with Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) to achieve a movement-invariant neuromorphic tactile sensing method for robust texture classification. Alongside this, we demonstrate the ability of this approach to extract movement profiles from purely tactile data. Our systems achieve accuracies of 95% and 83% across their respective tasks (texture and movement classification). We then seek to reduce the size and spiking activity of our networks with the aim of deployment to edge neuromorphic hardware. This multi-objective optimisation investigation using Pareto frontiers highlights several design trade-offs, where high activity and large network sizes can both be reduced by up to 68% and 94% at the cost of slight decreases in accuracy (8%). Wounds pose significant challenges to public health, primarily due to the loss of the mechanical integrity and barrier function of the skin and impaired angiogenesis, causing physical morbidities and psychological trauma to affect patients. Reconstructing the vasculature of the wound bed is crucial for promoting wound healing, reducing scar formation and enhancing the quality of life for patients. The development of pro‐angiogenic skin substitutes has emerged as a promising strategy to facilitate vascularization and expedite the healing process of burn wounds. This review provides an overview of the various types of skin substitutes employed in wound healing, explicitly emphasising those designed to enhance angiogenesis. Synthetic scaffolds, biological matrices and tissue‐engineered constructs incorporating stem cells and primary cells, cell‐derived extracellular vesicles (EVs), pro‐angiogenic growth factors and peptides, as well as gene therapy‐based skin substitutes are thoroughly examined. The review summarises the existing challenges, future directions and potential innovations in pro‐angiogenic dressing for skin substitutes. It highlights the need for continued research to develop new technologies and combine multiple strategies and factors, and to overcome obstacles and advance the field, ultimately leading to improved outcomes for wound patients. Alum-tawed skin has been widely used in the past for the production of bookbindings elements because of its physical–mechanical properties and production process, easier and faster than that required for leather. Nevertheless, unlike for other skin-based materials employed in books production, such as parchment and leather, for alum-tawed skin the manufacturing process appears to be less standardized and rather few data are available in the literature on its durability and sensitivity to deterioration. In this work, a number of commercial samples of alum-tawed skin, from different manufactures and belonging to different animal species, were analysed by Light Transmission Analysis (LTA) to characterize their collagen hydrothermal stability, so as to gather useful information regarding their possible use for restoration works. The samples were then subjected to an artificial ageing process to assess their possible long term stability compared with that of some historical samples coming from 14th, 15th and 16th century bindings. The obtained results show that, as expected, the treatments the investigated alum-tawed skin samples undergo during the manufacture processes does not induce a level of stability of the collagen molecules higher than that of the vegetable and chrome tanning used for the leather treatment, although such treatment, in some cases, makes the alum-tawed skin slightly more stable than parchment. Moreover, accelerated ageing analysis showed that whatever the initial stability of the analysed samples, it decreases with ageing more rapidly and markedly than for parchment and leather, revealing a general lower durability of the alum-tawed skin to hydrothermal deterioration. BACKGROUND: The clinical outcomes of bipolar radiofrequency (RF) lipolysis, a prevalent non-invasive fat reduction procedure, hinge on the delicate balance between effective lipolysis and patient safety, with skin overheating and subsequent tissue damage as primary concerns. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate a novel bipolar radiofrequency lipolysis technique, safeguarding the skin through an innovative PID temperature control algorithm. METHODS: Utilizing COMSOL Multiphysics simulation software, a two-dimensional fat and skin tissue model was established, simulating various PID temperature control schemes. The crux of the simulation involved a comparative analysis of different PID temperatures at 45 °C, 50 °C, and 55 °C and constant power strategies, assessing their implications on skin temperature. Concurrently, a custom bipolar radiofrequency lipolysis device was developed, with ex vivo experiments conducted using porcine tissue for empirical validation. RESULTS: The findings indicated that with PID settings of Kp = 7, Ki = 2, and Kd = 0, and skin temperature control at 45 °C or 50 °C, the innovative PID-based epidermal temperature control strategy successfully maintained the epidermal temperature within a safe range. This maintenance was achieved without compromising the effectiveness of RF lipolysis, significantly reducing the risk of thermal damage to the skin layers. CONCLUSION: Our research confirms the substantial practical utility of this advanced PID-based bipolar RF lipolysis technique in clinical aesthetic procedures, enhancing patient safety during adipose tissue ablation therapies. Transparent polysiloxane elastomers with good self-healing and reprocessing abilities have attracted significant attention in the field of artificial skin and flexible displays. Herein, we propose a simple one-pot method to fabricate a room temperature self-healable polysiloxane elastomer (HPDMS) by introducing dynamic and reversible imine bonds and boroxine into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) networks. The presence of imine bonds and boroxine is proved by FT−IR and NMR spectra. The obtained HPDMS elastomer is highly transparent with a transmittance of up to 80%. The TGA results demonstrated that the HPDMS elastomer has good heat resistance and can be used in a wide temperature range. A lower glass transition temperature (Tg, −127.4 °C) was obtained and revealed that the elastomer is highly flexible at room temperature. Because of the reformation of dynamic reversible imine bonds and boroxine, the HPDMS elastomers exhibited excellent autonomous self-healing properties. After healing for 3 h, the self-healing efficiency of HPDMS reached 96.3% at room temperature. Moreover, the elastomers can be repeatedly reprocessed multiple times under milder conditions. The rapid development of nanotechnology has offered the possibility of creating nanosystems that can be used as drug carriers. The use of such carriers offers real opportunities for the development of non-invasive drug delivery through skin structures. However, in addition to the ability to create suitable nanocarriers, it is also necessary to know how they move through dermal layers. The human skin consists of layers with different wettability characteristics, which greatly complicates how introduced substances move through it. In this work, an experimental study of the diffusion process of nanoparticles through partitions with different wettability properties was carried out. Conventional diffusion tests using Franz chambers were used for this purpose. We quantified how the wettability of the barrier, the number of layers, and their mutual configuration affect the transport of nanoparticles. Based on the results, an analysis of the phenomena taking place, depending on the wettability of the partition, was carried out. Hollow microneedles (HMNs) are minimally invasive needle-like microfeatures usually arranged in arrays designed for drug delivery and body fluid collection in a painless manner. In a recent work, we demonstrated a novel methodology to mass produce hollow polymer microneedles at a low cost. This methodology combines ultrashort pulse laser ablation to create inverse needle shapes in moulds and replication through polymer injection moulding. For a HMN to be functional, it should effectively pierce the skin at a low force and enable fluidic passage through the skin without leakage. This study investigates the impact of different laser scanning strategies on the cavity morphology and analyses how the various geometrical characteristics of the needle influence the penetration efficacy. To assess the penetration behaviour of the replicated HMNs, a combination of agarose gel and Parafilm® is employed as an in vitro testing platform. Furthermore, a correlation between HMN geometry, penetration performance, and modification of polymer material and holding pressure during injection moulding is established. The results indicate that a certain needle length is essential for effective penetration. Moreover, minimising the tip area, a factor significantly affecting penetration force, can be achieved by increasing the eccentricity of the scan-free area and expanding the scanning diameter. However, it is important to consider other functional needle features such as the ridge height or full lumen, which come at a cost to the tip sharpness. This work highlights the multiple interactions between the scanning strategy, the injection moulding process parameters, the needle geometry, and the penetration force. Herein, we report a cooling fabric with thermal conduction and radiative cooling capabilities through grafting hydroxylated boron nitride (BN-OH) nanosheets onto the surface of cotton fibers. The thermal conduction layer formed by BN-OH nanosheets enables the modified fabric with excellent thermal conductivity, which is 42% higher than that of the original cotton fabric. Resulting in the modified fabric exhibits great cooling power and increases the cooling setpoint temperature by 1 °C, which corresponds to reduced 11.2% indoor cooling energy consumption. Additionally, the Mid-infrared emissivity and solar reflectivity are increased to 90% and 70.4%, respectively, suggesting that wearing modified fabric under direct sunlight can enable the artificial skin to avoid overheating by 7.8 °C compared to bare skin. Moreover, the modified fabric also presents a considerable contact cool feeling, impressive wearability, and durability. Introduction : The primary goal of palatoplasty is the restoration of normal speech, that can be aimed by, among many procedures, lengthening the palate through the pushback technique; one of its complications is abnormal maxillary growth. The main factor affecting facial growth in CLP patients is believed by many to be the palatoplasty—due to the large scar retraction resulting from some surgical techniques. The non-crosslinked two-layer bioabsorbable collagen matrix Mucograft™ (Geistlich Pharma AG, Wolhusen, Switzerland) is a potential tool to aid in wound closure in a second-intention healing situation. Objective : The objective of this work was to test the use of an acellular dermal matrix (Mucograft®) in an experimental model of Veau–Wardill–Kilner palatoplasty, as a tool to reduce scar retraction of the denuded palatine mucosa. Methodology : Twenty-four 3-week-old male Wistar rats were used. The animals were randomly divided into two groups. In the control group, an excision was made with bone exposure in the palate, simulating the defect left in the Veau–Wardill–Kilner palatoplasty. In the intervention group, the same procedure was performed, and the area of denuded palatine bone was treated with a bioabsorbable collagen matrix (Mucograft®). For data collection, 9 weeks after surgery (12 weeks of life), the animals were euthanized by excessive anesthetic dosage. Maxillary growth, macroscopic appearance of the scar, pain, and bleeding were evaluated. Results : There were significant statistical differences between the groups for palate length growth (7.6 mm + −0.38 mm vs 5.5 mm + −0.36 mm, P =.009) and for palate width growth (1.47 mm + −0.8 mm vs −0.09 mm + −0.55 mm, P =.001), favoring dermal matrix group compared to controls. Whereas for pain and bleeding, there were no differences between the groups. Conclusion : The use of dermal matrix in rats with an area of bone denudation on the palate increases maxillary length and width growth patterns. Bone marrow-derived cells (BMDCs) are heterogeneous populations in which not only pluripotent stem cells, namely, hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) but also endothelial progenitor cells (EPC) are involved. BMDCs contribute to the maintenance of homeostasis and recovery from disrupted homeostasis as the immune, endocrine, and nervous systems. The skin is the largest organ in which various tissues, such as the epidermis, dermis, skin appendages (i.e., hair follicles), fats, muscles, and vessels, are tightly and systematically packed. It functions as a physical barrier to block the invasion of harmful substances and pathogenic microorganisms and properly regulate water evaporation. The skin is exposed to injuries from external stimuli because it is the outermost layer and owing to its specificity. Recovery from physical injuries and DNA mutations occurs constantly in the skin, but medical treatments are required for impaired wound healing. Recently, conservative treatments utilizing scaffolds have attracted attention as alternatives to surgical therapy, which is highly invasive. Against this background, numerous scaffolds are available in a clinical setting, although they have not surpassed surgery because of their distinct disadvantages. Here, we discuss the plasticity of BMDCs in the skin to maintain homeostasis, in addition to their critical roles on recovery from disrupted homeostasis. We also share our perspective on how scaffolds can be developed to establish scaffolds beyond surgery to regenerate skin structure during wound healing by maximally utilizing the plasticity of BMDCs. To develop and evaluate a novel human stratum corneum (SC) mimetic phospholipid vesicle-based permeation assay (PVPASC) model for in vitro permeation studies. Due to the increasing restrictions on the use of human and animal skins, artificial skin models have attracted substantial interest in pharmaceuticals and cosmetic industries. In this study, a modified PVPASC model containing both SC lipids and proteins was developed. The PVPASC model was optimized by altering the lipid composition and adding keratin in the formulation of large liposomes. The barrier properties were monitored by measuring the electrical resistance (ER) and permeability of Rhodamine B (RB). The modified PVPASC model was characterized in terms of the surface topography, solvent influence and storage stability. The permeation studies of the active components in Compound Nanxing Zhitong Plaster (CNZP) were performed to examine the capability of PVPASC in the application of skin penetration. The ER and Papp values of RB obtained from the optimized PVPASC model indicated a similar barrier property to porcine ear skin. Scanning electron microscope analysis demonstrated a mimic 'brick-and-mortar' structure. The PVPASC model can be stored for three weeks at −20 °C, and withstand the presence of different receptor medium for 24 h. The permeation studies of the active components demonstrated a good correlation (r2 = 0.9136) of Papp values between the drugs' permeation through the PVPASC model and porcine ear skin. In this study, a stress-dependent ratiometric ML is achieved using the Eu2+ and Mn2+ co-doped SrMg2(PO4)2 (SMP) phosphors, enabling color-resolved visualization of uploaded stress stimulus. Moreover, the linear relationship between the ML intensity ratio (MLIR) and the applied stress leads to an obvious variation in ML color upon different applied stress.
