2. Some Aspects of Interfacial Bonding in Composites with Special Reference to Carbon and Glass Fibre Reinforced Plastics

Abstract

This thesis illustrates the importance of interfacial bonding in determining composite properties and describes the research programme carried out to investigate interfacial bonding in carbon fibre reinforced polyester ~ni:I epoxy composites. This involved measurement of bond strengths in simple, single fibre, micromechanical debond test specimens am relating the results to bulk composite properties,such as·interlaminar shear strength and the work of fracture. O~be~ a~pects investigated included the effect of ~ irradiation on fibre, plastic and composite properties, with the aim of using in situ ~ initiated polymerisation for coating fibres: and the hybrid effect in mixed type I/type II carbon fibre composites. One .'Of the main -experimental methods used to study the .mechanical deformation processes both in composite and mircromechanical specimens was acoustic emission. This is a technique in which the low.level stress waves, generated by material deformation, are detected and analysed. Some specimens were also examined by optical and scanning electron microscopy. The literature survey examines (i) The role of interfaces in composites (ii) More general composite mechanics and materials aspects (iii) ·Acoustic emission and its application to composites. The most important findings were (a) 2( Irradiation of type I fibres resulted in an enhanced modulus (b) Measured values of the tensile bond strength varied from .6 MNm -2 for type I oxidised t~ 4.9 MNm -2 for untreated type II fibres. (c) The existence of a hybrid effect in mixed type I/type II carbon fibre composites. Finally new areas of work, arising from this project, were outlined.

Abstract

Downsizing of personnel and budgets demands effective means of managing patients' demand for care to ensure that care assets are appropriately utilized. Preliminary data indicate that the Central Triage concept of demand management is effective, efficient, and satisfactory to patients. As a centralized portal to care for individuals presenting without appointments, registered nurses screen and triage via protocol. The nurses send patients to the Emergency Center, make same-day appointments, or provide self-care education as indicated. During the first 9 months of operation, Central Triage inprocessed 35,231 patients. Twenty-three percent were determined to have self-care deficits and received education to assist them in meeting their current self-care demands. Follow-up of 10% of the patients receiving self-care education revealed that 88% improved without further intervention and 95% were satisfied with the care they received. Central Triage has demonstrated an annual cost avoidance exceeding $2,500,000.

Abstract

Brown stink bug, Euschistus servus (Say),and green stink bug, Acrostenzum hilare (Say) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), are major agricultural pests. Although various insecticides are used to control nymphs and adults, little is known about how they affect eggs. Laboratory bioassays and field trials were conducted to determine the efficacy of common field rates of acephate, A-cyhalothrin, spinosad, and thiamethoxam on developing E. servus and A. hilare eggs, as well as Telenornus podisi Ashmead (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) parasitoids developing in E. servus eggs. In laboratory bioassays, egg masses were dipped into insecticide and water solutions and assessed for mortality after 2 wk. In the field trials, egg masses on a cloth section were pinned to leaves in each plot of a randomized complete Hock and returned to the laboratory 24 h after exposure to insecticide sprays. Mortality was assessed after 2 wk. In dip bioassays, there was a significant effect of insecticide treatment on A. hi/are eggs with all insecticides resulting in greater mortality than the water control. However, no effect of treatment occurred in the field with A. hilare or for E. servus eggs in both the laboratory bioassays and the field trials. In contrast, developing T. podisi parasitoids showed significant mortality when exposed to all insecticide treatments, when dipped or field-treated. Spinosad and A-cyhalothrin treatments resulted in 100% mortality of T. podisi, and acephate resulted in greater mortality than thiamethoxam. Our results suggest that there is relatively little efficacy from insecticide sprays on stink bugs developing in eggs but that mortality of egg parasitoids may be significant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
