Search

To understand how the multitude of planetary systems that have been discovered come to be, we need to study systems at different evolutionary stages, with different central stars but also in different environments. The most challenging environment for planet formation may be the harsh UV radiation field of nearby massive stars which quickly erodes disks by external photo-evaporation. We have observed the AT Pyx system, located in the head of a cometary globule in the Gum Nebula, to search for signs of ongoing planet formation. We used the extreme adaptive optics imager VLT/SPHERE to observe AT Pyx in polarized light as well as total intensity in the J, H and K-band. Additionally we employed VLT/NACO to observe the system in the L-band. We resolve the disk around AT Pyx in scattered light across multiple wavelengths. We find an extended (>126 au) disk, with an intermediate inclination between 35 deg and 42 deg. The disk shows complex sub-structure and we identify 2 and possibly 3 spiral-like features. Depending on the precise geometry of the disk (which we can not unambiguously infer from our data) the disk may be eccentric with an eccentricity of ~0.16 or partially self-shadowed. The spiral features and possible eccentricity are both consistent with signatures of an embedded gas giant planet equal in mass to Jupiter. Our own observations can rule out brown dwarf companions embedded in the resolved disk, but are not sensitive enough to detect gas giants. AT Pyx is the first disk in a cometray globule in the Gum Nebula which is spatially resolved. By comparison with disks in the Orion Nebula Cluster we note that the extension of the disk may be exceptional for this environment if the external UV radiation field is comparable to other cometary globules in the region. Direct observations of young stellar objects are important to test established theories of planet formation. PDS 70 is one of the few cases where robust evidence favours the presence of two planetary mass companions inside the gap of the transition disk. Those planets are believed to be going through the last stages of accretion from the protoplanetary disk, a process likely mediated by a circumplanetary disk (CPD). We aim to develop a three dimensional radiative transfer model for the dust component of the PDS 70 system which reproduces the system's global features observed at two different wavelengths: 855 $\mu\, \mathrm{m}$ with ALMA and 1.25 $\mu\, \mathrm{m}$ with VLT/SPHERE. We use this model to investigate the physical properties of the planetary companion PDS 70 c and its potential circumplanetary disk. We select initial values for the physical properties of the planet and CPD through appropriate assumptions about the nature and evolutionary stage of the object. We modify iteratively the properties of the protoplanetary disk until the predictions retrieved from the model are consistent with both data sets. We provide a model that jointly explains the global features of the PDS 70 system seen in submillimeter and polarised-scattered light. Our model suggests that spatial segregation of dust grains is present in the protoplanetary disk. The submillimeter modelling of the PDS 70 c source favours the presence of an optically thick CPD and places an upper limit to its dust mass of 0.7 $M_\oplus$. Furthermore, analysis of the thermal structure of the CPD demonstrates that the planet luminosity is the dominant heating mechanism of dust grains inside 0.6 au from the planet while heating by stellar photons dominates at larger planetocentric distances., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A

To date, nearly two hundred planet-forming disks have been imaged with high resolution. Our propensity to study bright and extended objects is however biasing our view of the disk demography. In this work, we contribute to alleviate this bias by analyzing fifteen disks targeted with VLT/SPHERE that look faint in scattered light. Sources were selected based on a low far-IR excess from the spectral energy distribution. The comparison with the ALMA images available for a few sources shows that the scattered light surveyed by these datasets is only detected from a small portion of the disk extent. The mild anti-correlation between the disk brightness and the near-IR excess demonstrates that these disks are self-shadowed: the inner disk rim intercepts much starlight and leaves the outer disk in penumbra. Based on the uniform distribution of the disk brightness in scattered light across all spectral types, self-shadowing would act similarly for inner rims at a different distance from the star. We discuss how the illumination pattern of the outer disk may evolve with time. Some objects in the sample are proposed to be at an intermediate stage toward bright disks from the literature with either no shadow or with sign of azimuthally confined shadows., Comment: Accepted for publication in A\&A

Gas-rich circumstellar disks are the cradles of planet formation. As such, their evolution will strongly influence the resulting planet population. In the ESO DESTINYS large program, we study these disks within the first 10 Myr of their development with near-infrared scattered light imaging. Here we present VLT/SPHERE polarimetric observations of the nearby class II system SU Aur in which we resolve the disk down to scales of ~7 au. In addition to the new SPHERE observations, we utilize VLT/NACO, HST/STIS and ALMA archival data. The new SPHERE data show the disk around SU Aur and extended dust structures in unprecedented detail. We resolve several dust tails connected to the Keplerian disk. By comparison with ALMA data, we show that these dust tails represent material falling onto the disk. The disk itself shows an intricate spiral structure and a shadow lane, cast by an inner, misaligned disk component. Our observations suggest that SU Aur is undergoing late infall of material, which can explain the observed disk structures. SU Aur is the clearest observational example of this mechanism at work and demonstrates that late accretion events can still occur in the class II phase, thereby significantly affecting the evolution of circumstellar disks. Spatially resolved continuum observations of planet-forming disks show prominent ring and gap structures in their dust distribution. However, the picture from gas observations is much less clear and constraints on the radial gas density structure (i.e. gas gaps) remain rare and uncertain. We want to investigate the importance of thermo-chemical processes for the interpretation of high-spatial-resolution gas observations of planet-forming disks and their impact on derived gas properties. We apply the radiation thermo-chemical disk code ProDiMo (PROtoplanetary DIsk MOdel) to model self-consistently the dust and gas disk of HD 163296, using the DSHARP gas and dust observations. With this model we investigate the impact of dust gaps and gas gaps, considering chemistry and heating/cooling processes, on the observables and the derived gas properties. We find distinct peaks in the radial line intensity profiles of the CO line data of HD 163296 at the location of the dust gaps. Our model indicates that those peaks are not only a consequence of a gas temperature increase within the gaps but are mainly caused by the absorption of line emission from the back side of the disk by the dust rings. For two of the three prominent dust gaps in HD 163296, we find that thermo-chemical effects are negligible for deriving density gradients via measurements of the rotation velocity. However, for the gap with the highest dust depletion, the temperature gradient can be dominant and needs to be considered to derive accurate gas density profiles. Self-consistent gas and dust thermo-chemical modelling in combination with high-quality observations of multiple molecules are necessary to accurately derive gas gap depths and shapes. This is crucial to determine the origin of gaps and rings in planet-forming disks and to improve the mass estimates of forming planets if they are the cause of the gap., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Hydrodynamical simulations of planet-disk interactions suggest that planets may be responsible for a number of the sub-structures frequently observed in disks in both scattered light and dust thermal emission. Despite the ubiquity of these features, direct evidence of planets embedded in disks and of the specific interaction features like spiral arms within planetary gaps still remain rare. In this study we discuss recent observational results in the context of hydrodynamical simulations in order to infer the properties of a putative embedded planet in the cavity of a transition disk. We imaged the transition disk SR 21 in H-band in scattered light with SPHERE/IRDIS and in thermal dust emission with ALMA band 3 (3mm) observations at a spatial resolution of 0.1". We combine these datasets with existing band 9 (430um) and band 7 (870um) ALMA continuum data. The Band 3 continuum data reveals a large cavity and a bright ring peaking at 53 au strongly suggestive of dust trapping.The ring shows a pronounced azimuthal asymmetry, with a bright region in the north-west that we interpret as a dust over-density. A similarly-asymmetric ring is revealed at the same location in polarized scattered light, in addition to a set of bright spirals inside the mm cavity and a fainter spiral bridging the gap to the outer ring. These features are consistent with a number of previous hydrodynamical models of planet-disk interactions, and suggest the presence of a ~1 MJup planet at 44 au and PA=11{\deg}. This makes SR21 the first disk showing spiral arms inside the mm cavity, as well as one for which the location of a putative planet can be precisely inferred. With the location of a possible planet being well-constrained by observations, it is an ideal candidate for follow-up observations to search for direct evidence of a planetary companion still embedded in its disk., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

SPHERE (Beuzit et al,. 2019) has now been in operation at the VLT for more than 5 years, demonstrating a high level of performance. SPHERE has produced outstanding results using a variety of operating modes, primarily in the field of direct imaging of exoplanetary systems, focusing on exoplanets as point sources and circumstellar disks as extended objects. The achievements obtained thus far with SPHERE (~200 refereed publications) in different areas (exoplanets, disks, solar system, stellar physics...) have motivated a large consortium to propose an even more ambitious set of science cases, and its corresponding technical implementation in the form of an upgrade. The SPHERE+ project capitalizes on the expertise and lessons learned from SPHERE to push high contrast imaging performance to its limits on the VLT 8m-telescope. The scientific program of SPHERE+ described in this document will open a new and compelling scientific window for the upcoming decade in strong synergy with ground-based facilities (VLT/I, ELT, ALMA, and SKA) and space missions (Gaia, JWST, PLATO and WFIRST). While SPHERE has sampled the outer parts of planetary systems beyond a few tens of AU, SPHERE+ will dig into the inner regions around stars to reveal and characterize by mean of spectroscopy the giant planet population down to the snow line. Building on SPHERE's scientific heritage and resounding success, SPHERE+ will be a dedicated survey instrument which will strengthen the leadership of ESO and the European community in the very competitive field of direct imaging of exoplanetary systems. Shadows in scattered light images of protoplanetary disks are a common feature and support the presence of warps or misalignments between disk regions. These warps are possibly due to an inclined (sub-)stellar companion embedded in the disk. We study the morphology of the protoplanetary disk around the Herbig Ae star HD 139614 based on the first scattered light observations of this disk, which we model with the radiative transfer code MCMax3D. We obtained J- and H-band observations in polarized scattered light with VLT/SPHERE that show strong azimuthal asymmetries. In the outer disk, beyond ~30 au, a broad shadow spans a range of ~240{\deg} in position angle, in the East. A bright ring at ~16 au also shows an azimuthally asymmetric brightness, with the faintest side roughly coincidental with the brightest region of the outer disk. Additionally, two arcs are detected at ~34 au and ~50 au. We created a simple 4-zone approximation to a warped disk model of HD 139614 in order to qualitatively reproduce these features. The location and misalignment of the disk components were constrained from the shape and location of the shadows they cast. We find that the shadow on the outer disk covers a range of position angle too wide to be explained by a single inner misaligned component. Our model requires a minimum of two separate misaligned zones -- or a continuously warped region -- to cast this broad shadow on the outer disk. A small misalignment of ~4{\deg} between adjacent components can reproduce most of the observed shadow features. Multiple misaligned disk zones, potentially mimicing a warp, can explain the observed broad shadows in the HD 139614 disk. A planetary mass companion in the disk, located on an inclined orbit, could be responsible for such a feature and for the dust depleted gap responsible for a dip in the SED., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

As part of our on-going survey we have carried out high-contrast imaging with VLT/SPHERE/IRDIS to obtain polarized and total intensity images of the young ($11^{+16}_{-7}$Myr old) K3IV star Wray 15-788 within the Lower Centaurus Crux subgroup of Sco-Cen. For the total intensity images, we remove the stellar halo by an approach based on reference star differential imaging in combination with principal component analysis. Both total intensity and polarimetric data resolve a disk around Wray 15-788. Modeling of the stellar spectral energy distribution suggests that this is a protoplanetary disk at a transition stage. We detect a bright, outer ring at a projected separation of $\sim$370mas ($\approx$56au), hints for inner substructures at $\sim$170mas ($\approx$28au) and a gap in between. Only within a position angle range of $60^\circ<\varphi<240^\circ$, we are confident at 5$\sigma$ level to detect actual scattered light flux from the outer ring of the disk; the remaining part is indistinguishable from background noise. For the detected part of the outer ring we determine a disk inclination of $i$=21$^\circ\pm$6$^\circ$ and a position angle of $\varphi$=76$^\circ\pm$16$^\circ$. Furthermore, we find that Wray 15-788 is part of a binary system with the A2V star HD 98363 at a separation of $\sim$50'' ($\approx$6900au). The detection of only half of the outer ring might be due to shadowing by a misaligned inner disk. A potential substellar companion can cause the misalignment of the inner structures and can be responsible for clearing the detected gap from scattering material. We can not, however, rule out the possibility of a non-detection due to our limited signal to noise ratio, combined with brightness azimuthal asymmetry. From our data, we can exclude companions more massive than 10$M_\mathrm{jup}$ within the gap at a separation of $\sim$230mas ($\approx$35au)., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A (16 pages, 11 figures)

Context. The mechanisms governing the opening of cavities in transition disks are not fully understood. Several processes have been proposed but their occurrence rate is still unknown. Aims. We present spatially resolved observations of two transition disks and aim at constraining their vertical and radial structure using multiwavelength observations. Methods. We have obtained near-IR scattered light observations with VLT/SPHERE of the transition disks J1608 and J1852. We complement our datasets with ALMA observations and with unresolved photometric observations covering a wide range of wavelengths. We performed radiative transfer modeling to analyze the morphology of the disks and compare the results with a sample of 20 other transition disks observed with both SPHERE and ALMA. Results. The scattered light image of J1608 reveals a very inclined disk, with two bright lobes and a large cavity. J1852 shows an inner ring extending beyond the coronagraphic radius up to 15au, a gap and a second ring at 42au. Our radiative transfer model of J1608 indicates that the millimeter-sized grains are less extended vertically and radially than the micron-sized grains, indicating advanced settling and radial drift. We find good agreement with the observations of J1852 with a similar model, but due to the low inclination of the system, the model remains partly degenerate. The analysis of 22 transition disks shows that, in general, the cavities observed in scattered light are smaller than the ones detected at millimeter wavelengths. Conclusions. The analysis of a sample of transition disks indicates that the small grains can flow inward of the region where millimeter grains are trapped. While 15 out of the 22 cavities in our sample could be explained by a planet of less than 13 Jupiter masses, the others either require the presence of a more massive companion or of several low-mass planets., Comment: Accepted in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Several detections of wide-orbit planet-mass/sub-stellar companions around young solar-like stars were reported in the last decade. The origin of those possible planets is still unclear but accretion tracers and VLT/SPHERE observations indicate that they are surrounded by circumplanetary material or even a circumplanetary disk. We want to investigate if the gas component of disks around wide-orbit companions is detectable with current and future (sub)mm telescopes and what constraints such gas observations can provide on the nature of the circumplanetary material and on the mass of the companion. We applied the radiation thermo-chemical disk code ProDiMo to model the dust and gas component of passive circumplanetary disks and produced realistic synthetic observables. We considered different companion properties, disk parameters and radiative environments and compared the resulting synthetic observables to telescope sensitivities and to existing dust observations. The main criterion for a successful detection is the size of the circumplanetary disk. At a distance of about 150 pc, a circumplanetary disk with an outer radius of about 10 au is detectable with ALMA in about 6 hours in optically thick CO lines. Other aspects such as the companion's luminosity, disk inclination and background radiation fields are also relevant and should be considered to optimize the observing strategy for detection experiments. For most of the known wide-orbit planet-mass companions, their maximum theoretical disk size of one third of the Hill radius would be sufficient to allow detection of CO lines. It is therefore feasible to detect their gas disks and constrain the mass of the companion through the kinematic signature. While planet formation is thought to occur early in the history of a protoplanetary disk, the presence of planets embedded in disks, or of other processes driving disk evolution, might be traced from their imprints on the disk structure. We observed the T Tauri star HD 143006, located in the 5-11 Myr-old Upper Sco region, in polarized scattered light with VLT/SPHERE at near-infrared wavelengths, reaching an angular resolution of ~0.037" (~6 au). We obtained two datasets, one with a 145 mas diameter coronagraph, and the other without, enabling us to probe the disk structure down to an angular separation of ~0.06" (~10 au). In our observations, the disk of HD 143006 is clearly resolved up to ~0.5" and shows a clear large-scale asymmetry with the eastern side brighter than the western side. We detect a number of additional features, including two gaps and a ring. The ring shows an overbrightness at a position angle (PA) of ~140 deg, extending over a range in position angle of ~60 deg, and two narrow dark regions. The two narrow dark lanes and the overall large-scale asymmetry are indicative of shadowing effects, likely due to a misaligned inner disk. We demonstrate the remarkable resemblance between the scattered light image of HD 143006 and a model prediction of a warped disk due to an inclined binary companion. The warped disk model, based on the hydrodynamic simulations combined with 3D radiative transfer calculations, reproduces all major morphological features. However, it does not account for the observed overbrightness at PA~140 deg. Shadows have been detected in several protoplanetary disks, suggesting that misalignment in disks is not uncommon. However, the origin of the misalignment is not clear. Context. Multi-wavelength observations are indispensable in studying disk geometry and dust evolution processes in protoplanetary disks. Aims. We aimed to construct a 3-dimensional model of HD 163296 capable of reproducing simultaneously new observations of the disk surface in scattered light with the SPHERE instrument and thermal emission continuum observations of the disk midplane with ALMA. We want to determine why the SED of HD 163296 is intermediary between the otherwise well-separated group I and group II Herbig stars. Methods. The disk was modelled using the Monte Carlo radiative transfer code MCMax3D. The radial dust surface density profile was modelled after the ALMA observations, while the polarized scattered light observations were used to constrain the inclination of the inner disk component and turbulence and grain growth in the outer disk. Results. While three rings are observed in the disk midplane in millimeter thermal emission at $\sim$80, 124 and 200 AU, only the innermost of these is observed in polarized scattered light, indicating a lack of small dust grains on the surface of the outer disk. We provide two models capable of explaining this difference. The first model uses increased settling in the outer disk as a mechanism to bring the small dust grains on the surface of the disk closer to the midplane, and into the shadow cast by the first ring. The second model uses depletion of the smallest dust grains in the outer disk as a mechanism for decreasing the optical depth at optical and NIR wavelengths. In the region outside the fragmentation-dominated regime, such depletion is expected from state-of-the-art dust evolution models. We studied the effect of creating an artificial inner cavity in our models, and conclude that HD 163296 might be a precursor to typical group I sources., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures
