Abstract

The aim of the present study was to analyse the clinical potential of radiosurgery applied to modern dentistry through a revision of the indexed literature. Radiosurgery represents a recent form of electrosurgery working at a frequency of 3.0-4.0 MHz. The depth of penetration of the waves is inversely proportional to the frequency. Radiowaves working at high frequency express a lower penetration with a consequent lower tissue alteration. The authors analyzed the literature in order to give to the scientific community an overview of the possible applications of radiosurgery in the clinical dental practice and their effectiveness. Radiosurgery can be used in prosthodontics, in periodontal and implant surgery, in the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia, in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea syndromes (OSAS) and in endodontics. Our analysis shows that although there are few articles in indixed literature on the applications of radiosurgery in dentistry, thanks to the benefits that derive from it, radiosurgery will spread more in the daily clinical practice of the dentists.

Abstract

Milk freezing point (FP) is an important quality indicator which can be used for determination of possible adulteration of the milk with water. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of seasonality on ewe FP produced in Sicily during the last 10 years of investigation. A total of 1,996 samples of raw bulk ewes’ milk were collected from 295 dairy factories located in western Sicily (Italy). The average of the FP during the entire period of investigations was -0.560 °C ± 0.013 °C. The seasonality of milk FP showed that at the beginning of lactations (September) the FP was -0.554°C, than it decreased up to December (-0.561°C). Successively, FP increases until the end of lactations were the lowest values were recorded in August (-0.551°C). The Pearson correlation analysis showed a significant negative correlation between FP and milk fat percentage (r= -0.21), milk protein content (r= -0.23), milk urea content (r= -0.30), milk lactose percentage (r= -0.25) and titratable acidity (r=-0.27) that demonstrate a strong correlation between milk FP and milk chemical composition.

14. What Can Political Psychology Learn from Implicit Measures? Empirical Evidence and New Directions

Abstract

Implicit measures have become very popular in virtually all areas of basic and applied psychology. However, there are empirical and theoretical arguments that might raise doubts about their usefulness in research on political attitudes. Based on a review of relevant evidence, we argue that implicit measures can be useful to identify sources of political preferences in domains where self-presentation may bias self-reports (e.g., influence of racial attitudes on voting decisions). In addition, implicit measures of regular political attitudes can contribute to the prediction of future political decisions by virtue of their capability to predict biases in the processing of decision-relevant information (e.g., prediction of voting behavior of undecided voters). These conclusions are supported by research showing that implicit measures predict real-world political behavior over and above explicit measures. The reviewed findings suggest that implicit measures may serve as a useful supplement to improve the prediction of election outcomes. Open questions and potential directions for future research are discussed.

16. A novel workflow for computer guided implant surgery matching digital dental casts and CBCT scan

Abstract

Nowadays computer-guided “flap-less” surgery for implant placement using stereolithographic tem-plates is gaining popularity among clinicians and patients. The advantages of this surgical protocol are its minimally invasive nature, accuracy of implant placement, predictability, less post-surgical discomfort and reduced time required for definitive rehabilitation. Aim of this work is to describe a new protocol (Smart Fusion by Nobel Biocare), thanks to which is now possible to do a mini-invasive static guided implant surgery, in partially edentulous patients with at least 6 remaining teeth, without the use of a radiographic guide. This is possible thanks to a procedure named surface mapping based on the matching between numerous points on the surface of patient’s dental casts and the corresponding anatomical surface points in the CBCT data. The full protocol is examined focusing the attention on the clinical and laboratory procedures.

Abstract

Objectives: ACST-2 is currently the largest trial ever conducted to compare carotid artery stenting (CAS) with carotid endarterectomy (CEA) in patients with severe asymptomatic carotid stenosis requiring revascularization. Methods: Patients are entered into ACST-2 when revascularization is felt to be clearly indicated, when CEA and CAS are both possible, but where there is substantial uncertainty as to which is most appropriate. Trial surgeons and interventionalists are expected to use their usual techniques and CE-approved devices. We report baseline characteristics and blinded combined interim results for 30-day mortality and major morbidity for 986 patients in the ongoing trial up to September 2012. Results: A total of 986 patients (687 men, 299 women), mean age 68.7 years (SD ± 8.1) were randomized equally to CEA or CAS. Most (96%) had ipsilateral stenosis of 70-99% (median 80%) with contralateral stenoses of 50-99% in 30% and contralateral occlusion in 8%. Patients were on appropriate medical treatment. For 691 patients undergoing intervention with at least 1-month follow-up and Rankin scoring at 6 months for any stroke, the overall serious cardiovascular event rate of periprocedural (within 30 days) disabling stroke, fatal myocardial infarction, and death at 30 days was 1.0%. Conclusions: Early ACST-2 results suggest contemporary carotid intervention for asymptomatic stenosis has a low risk of serious morbidity and mortality, on par with other recent trials. The trial continues to recruit, to monitor periprocedural events and all types of stroke, aiming to randomize up to 5,000 patients to determine any differential outcomes between interventions. Abbiamo monitorato l’efficacia di un prodotto di informazione destinato ad un pubblico di bambini. È stata condotta una ricerca nell’ambito della quale sono state rilevate e messe a confronto le reazioni di bambini appartenenti a due diversi gruppi d’età (6-7 e 9-10 anni) esposti o a notizie provenienti da un telegiornale confezionato per una fruizione di tipo generalista o a notizie contenute in un telegiornale destinato ad un pubblico di bambini. Ci si attendeva che se le caratteristiche di un prodotto di informazione destinato a bambini erano tali da renderlo particolarmente adatto a questo specifico pubblico, allora il materiale così costruito avrebbe dovuto essere più facilmente e produttivamente elaborato, rispetto ad analogo materiale pensato per la fruizione da parte del pubblico di adulti. I dati testimoniano l’efficacia del prodotto di informazione destinato ad un pubblico di bambini.

Abstract

In two studies, we investigated the structure of the Self-Liking/Self-Competence Scale – Revised (i.e., SLCS-R; Tafarodi & Swann, 2001), which was developed to measure two distinct dimensions of self-esteem: Self-competence and self-liking. In Study 1 we provided evidence that the two sub-scales actually address different aspects of self-esteem. In Study 2 with Confirmatory Factor Analysis we showed that a Multi-trait–Multi-method model including the dimensions of self-esteem as different traits, and positive versus negative wording of items as different methods, provided a superior fit to the data as compared to both a unidimensional model of self-esteem and to a bidimensional model not including the wording factor.

Abstract

The present article focuses on the automatic evaluation of exemplars whose category membership has been learned in the past. Studies 1 and 2 confirmed the hypothesis that once an exemplar has been encoded as a member of a given group, at a later encounter the evaluation associated with the group will be unintentionally retrieved from memory, even when no perceptual cue indicates the exemplar's category membership. Study 3 extended the results to the domain of in-group/out-group differentiation. In addition. Studies 4 and 5 confirmed the hypothesis that stored evaluations can be retrieved and affect responses even when the semantic information on which the evaluations were originally based is no longer available for retrieval. Finally, Study 6 investigated spontaneous approach-avoidance behavior tendencies. Overall, results demonstrate the pervasive effects of person-based representations, and they are discussed in terms of recent models of person perception and out-group discrimination.

32. A tale of two primes: Contextual limits on stereotype activation

Abstract

Recent research has questioned the automaticity of stereotypical thinking by identifying factors that moderate the elicitation of this process. Extending this general line of inquiry, the present experiments investigated the effects of contextual factors on stereotype activation. It was anticipated that the manner in which triggering categorical cues are encountered would moderate the activation of stereotypical thinking. Specifically, it was predicted that briefly presented primes (i.e., difficult-to-process items) would not activate sex stereotypes when they were intermixed with primes that were easy to process (i.e., items presented for longer times). The results of two experiments supported this prediction. In addition, Experiment 2 showed that stereotype activation following the presentation of easy-to-process primes is moderated by individual differences in the endorsement of stereotypical beliefs. These findings are noteworthy because they demonstrate that contextual factors modulate stereotype activation at even the very early stages of social information processing.

Abstract

The aim of the present study was to analyse the clinical potential of radiosurgery applied to modern dentistry through a revision of the indexed literature. Radiosurgery represents a recent form of electrosurgery working at a frequency of 3.0-4.0 MHz. The depth of penetration of the waves is inversely proportional to the frequency. Radiowaves working at high frequency express a lower penetration with a consequent lower tissue alteration. The authors analyzed the literature in order to give to the scientific community an overview of the possible applications of radiosurgery in the clinical dental practice and their effectiveness. Radiosurgery can be used in prosthodontics, in periodontal and implant surgery, in the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia, in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea syndromes (OSAS) and in endodontics. Our analysis shows that although there are few articles in indixed literature on the applications of radiosurgery in dentistry, thanks to the benefits that derive from it, radiosurgery will spread more in the daily clinical practice of the dentists.
