Epistomal lobes lacking sensilla, therefore gFR2 absent; seta FR7 absent. Both mandibles with six sensilla; one short seta on outer margin at basal third (MN1), one minute seta on outer margin at distal quarter (MN5) in right mandible (closer to apex in left mandible), three dorsal pores (MN2, MN3, MN4) forming an oblique row at level of inner retinaculum of right mandible (MN2 closer to MN4 than to MN3; equidistant on left mandible), MN3 closer to inner margin, more basal, MN4 on outer margin, more distal; pore MN6 subapical on inner margin. Maxilla (Figs. 16–18). Cardo with one short seta (MX 1). Stipites asymmetrical, with a row of nine stout and short setae along inner margin, at least six bifid subapically; left stipes with basal four setae arranged in an oblique row, remaining setae forming a longitudinal row, basal seta of stipes likely homologous to MX 7, remaining setae forming (gMX2); right stipes with all setae arranged longitudinally. Ventral face of stipes with three pores, one on basal half (MX 2), one subapical close to inner margin (MX 3) and one subapical on outer margin (MX 4), and two setae distal to pore MX 4 (MX 5 shorter, MX 6 longer). MP1 dorsally with one basal spiniform seta (MX 16) on inner face, MX 17 apparently absent; ventrally with two subapical setae MX 13 (long) and MX 14 (shorter) and two pores (MX 12 on outer margin, MX 15 on inner margin at base of gAPP); inner appendage reduced, with four or five sensilla of different lengths (gAPP). MP2 with two pores, MX 18 ventral and apical on outer margin and MX 19 dorsal at inner margin on membrane connecting with MP3; one basal minute seta (MX 27) on outer margin. MP3 with two rather long setae and two pores, one seta dorsal, close to outer margin (MX 23), the other ventral on inner margin (MX 21); both pores on ventral surface, one close to seta MX 21 (MX 22), the other apical, close to outer margin (MX 20). MP4 with one short basal seta dorsally (MX 24) and two dorsal subapical pores (MX 25 central, digitiform, MX 26 closer to outer margin); a group of at least seven or eight very short sensilla constitute gMX1. POSITION OF TRITONUS An unexpected result of the analyses based on all larval characters and non-chaetotaxic larval characters (Fig. 99) is the position of Tritonus as a sister clade to the Hydrobiusini (excluding Hybogralius). Four larval characters support this clade: (1) character 16(1), inner margin of epistomal lobes with cuticular spines (also present in other dissimilar genera, e.g. Phaenonotum Sharp, 1882, Chaetarthria, Tropisternus Solier, 1834, convergence); (2) character 35(0), femur as large as trochanter (also shared with unrelated Phaenonotum, Chaetarthria and Tormus, convergence); (3) character 49(0), ratio distance between both FR8/distance between FR8–FR9 less than 0.6 (also shared with larvae of the tribe Hydrophilini and Tormus, a probable convergence); and (4) character 99(1), a short antennal sensorium (SE1), not shared with any other genera included in the analysis and can be considered a synapomorphy for this clade; however, Tropisternus and Sternolophus Solier, 1834 (Hydrophilini) have an extremely short sensorium. The topology-constrained analysis revealed Tritonus as sister to the Hydrobiusini only in the analysis based on non-chaetotaxic characters; in all other cases it was revealed as sister to the Hydrophilini. This position is supported by three larval characters: (1) 57(1), sensillum PA11 developed as long trichoid seta (also present in Amphiops, Derallus and Ametor); (2) 65(1), pore AN2 closer to distal margin of the antennomere than to AN1 (weak character with many reversals across the tree); and (3) 96(0) third antennomere long (ratio AN2/AN3 Tritonus and Hydramara in the taxa included in the analysis). All these results are in contrast to those analyses based on molecular data (Toussaint et al., 2016; Toussaint & Short, 2018) in which Tritonus is revealed as closely related to Tormus and Paracymus Thomson, 1867. Larvae of the latter two genera differ from those of Tritonus in many aspects [discussed by Fikáček et al. (2017)] and from the morphological point of view, their close relationship seems unlikely. Our analyses indicate that the same may be the case for adult morphology. Six setae of gFR1 short and stout, forming an almost straight line along anterior margin, equidistant and similar to each other. Epistomal lobes with three setae (gFR2) outer two closer to each other, longer than inner one. Seta FR1 short and stout, at about midlength of frontale (one specimen has seta FR1 duplicated, Fig. 4); pore-like sensillum FR2 anteromesal to FR1; short seta FR5 lateral to FR2; pore-like sensillum FR4, short seta FR7 and long seta FR6 arranged in a triangle mesal to inner margin of antennal socket; short seta FR3, rather long seta FR8 and pore-like sensillum FR15 placed mesally behind nasale; six sensilla located between inner margin of antennal socket and lateral lobe of epistome, short seta FR10, long seta FR9 and pore-like sensillum FR14 forming a triangle distal to inner margin of antennal socket, pore-like sensilla FR11, FR13 and short seta FR12 forming a longitudinal line distal to seta FR9, FR12 positioned between FR13 and FR11.
