ABSTRACT This paper examines some of the ways in which Indigenous and Western archaeological chronologies are being negotiated and entwined in Oceania. Indigenous pasts are often known through oral traditions, genealogies and ancestral landscapes; these are vital pasts populated by the ancestors. The archaeological past is often interpreted through taphonomy, stratigraphy and direct dating techniques. There are tensions and intersections between these perspectives, and research partnerships between archaeologists and Indigenous communities must negotiate how to build chronologies and narrate the past. Drawing on case studies from our research in Australia and Papua New Guinea, we discuss how these seemingly different ways of knowing the past can be brought into productive conversation and how these understandings are transforming today. We argue that incorporating diverse temporalities for ancestral places can generate richer historical narratives of value to communities and researchers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The lower reaches of the Yellow River have witnessed numerous episodes of flooding and considerable shifts in its course. Examining flood records within the Yellow River basin offers invaluable insights into ancient human settlements, agricultural practices, trade routes, and technological advancements of ancient Chinese civilizations. However, dating these fluvial sediments poses a considerable challenge due to either the scarcity of organic material for radiocarbon (14C) dating or the potential incomplete bleaching of sediments for optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) techniques. This study focused on the Anshang site located in Henan Province, we obtained OSL ages from distinct grain size fractions of quartz and cross-verified them with independent acceleration mass spectrometry (AMS) 14C ages. The findings revealed that both coarse quartz grains (CG) and medium quartz grains (MG) underwent complete bleaching in silt-dominated flood deposits and shallow lacustrine deposits. Conversely, the OSL ages of CG and MG quartz were notably overestimated by approximately 3–6 ka in silty clay-dominated flood deposits. Upon comparing the OSL ages with AMS 14C ages, it was evident that bulk organic matter AMS 14C ages aligned with CG OSL ages in shallow lacustrine deposits, but they appeared older than CG OSL ages in flood deposits. However, the AMS 14C ages from plant demonstrated good consistency. Consequently, we successfully identified flood-lacustrine sediments dating back to approximately ∼13 ka, ∼8–3 ka, ∼2.6 ka, ∼1 ka, and the last few hundred years, aligning well with historical documentation and earlier research. The regional evidence presented herein enhances our understanding of the applicability of OSL dating and AMS 14C dating in fluvial-lacustrine sediments. Radiocarbon analysis is a common tool used to obtain the absolute ages of materials from archaeological contexts. This method underlies the basis of most archaeological chronologies across the globe, allowing us to better understand the temporality of past events. However, in the American Southeast, research by a small number of academic archaeologists who are interested in specific kinds of sites, time periods, and research questions drive radiocarbon dating efforts. This creates an uneven distribution of chronological and temporal frameworks that limits our interpretation of human behavior across time and space. In this report, we argue that if archaeologists want to control for time in the same way that we control for space in our interpretations of the archaeological record, radiocarbon dating must be practiced using a standardized methodology in all realms of archaeological practice – cultural resource management, academia, museums, and government agencies. To do this, archaeologists need to (1) better date individual sites and groups of related sites and (2) build an aggregate data set that more accurately reflects the reality of human behavior across time. Due to the fact that still no absolute chronological data are available to estimate the chronology of the Ihuatzio archaeological site, we carried out an archaeomagnetic and magnetic mineralogy study on two fragments of its most common pottery. The first analyzed sample be longs to the "Uacusecha polychrome" type, while the second corresponds to the "Tariacuri red" style. The main magnetic carrier is linked to magnetites or titanomagnetites poor in titanium. We note the presence of hematite, but its contribution to the remanent magnetization is insignificant. We obtained eight reliable determinations of absolute intensities, ranging from 36.8 to 61.03 mT. The most probable dating was achieved with the global models and local curves available for Mesoamerica by using the bootstrap statistics. Even with the limitation of using only one geomagnetic element (absolute intensity) and divergent dating patterns, it has been possible to relate the chronology of the studied pottery with the apogee of the Tarascan Lordship and the dominant position of Ihuatzio along the Lake Patzcuaro area. Charcoal is a common material for radiocarbon dating. Meanwhile, it is underestimated as an object of dendrochronological analysis used to date natural and historical–archaeological events with an accuracy of up to a year. The new approach to charcoal sample preparation developed by the authors makes it possible to remove previous restrictions on this fragile material imposed in the dendrochronological studies and to use it as an efficient information source in paleoecology, paleoclimatology, paleogeography, and archaeology. This new method has been applied to construct a 377-year tree-ring chronology using archaeological charcoals from ancient iron-smelting furnaces in the Chuya–Kurai ferrous metallurgy province of the Russian Altai. This tree-ring chronology of charcoal is the first in Russia and the longest in dendrochronological practice throughout the world. Ancient texts dedicating or commemorating temples that can be associated with archaeological remains such as architecture and inscriptions, along with identifiable kings who built or commemorated those temples and the specification of the elapsed number of years from a past event, are known from Mesopotamia, Egypt, and the Levant over the span of several centuries. Although the texts originate from differing religious, cultural, and geographic contexts and were recorded on various mediums, the similarity in content, style, and objective indicates a shared tradition and allows the grouping of these texts into a distinctive category. These temple construction and dedication texts document a king or kings involved in the construction, reconstruction, or remembrance of a temple, a deity with whom the temple was connected, the location of the temple, and the specific number of years elapsed between construction or dedication and another significant cultural or religious event. Known examples come from Assyria, Babylon, Egypt, Phoenicia, and Israel, spanning the 13th to the 2nd centuries BC, along with a text from ancient Rome that was likely influenced by this practice. Because the kings named are known from various historical documents and inscriptions, archaeological remains related to the temples have often been recovered; since the construction or dedication texts record elapsed years in reference to another event, these texts can be analyzed in regard to their viability as sources for the history and chronology of the ancient Near East in the context of religion and official records of the state. Investigation of these texts alongside king lists and temples reveals that temple construction and dedication texts of the ancient Near East that included mention of elapsed years provide valuable, detailed, and accurate information that can be used to identify the existence of ancient temples in time, corroborate periods of kingship or other important events, and contribute to understanding a method of historical chronology used by the ancients. Famous for Taklimakan, the world's second largest sandy desert, the Tarim Basin in Xinjiang has long attracted researchers from various fields to investigate its paleoenvironment and antiquity. The southern part of this basin is an ideal region in which to investigate the interactions between humans and the environment due to its fragile habitat and prosperous ancient civilizations. However, the lack of direct radiocarbon dating data has caused the chronologies of some of the archaeological sites to be debatable, which hinders our ability to reconstruct historical patterns of human activity and further understand, in a coherent manner, their interaction with the environment. This study reports 25 new radiocarbon dates acquired from ten undated archaeological sites in the southern Taklimakan Desert in order to refine their chronologies. Based on this, a radiocarbon dataset was established to reveal the trajectory of human activity with the support of Bayesian chronological modeling. The results indicate a two-millennium continuous flourishing of the local society since the beginning of the first millennium BCE, as well as a peak of human activity during the Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE). The distinct trajectory of human activity in the southern Tarim Basin revealed by this study provides a solid foundation for further assessments of human–environment interaction in the Tarim Basin and along the Silk Road. Topics include archaeological richness of the Middle Wateree River Valley, spanning from early Native American occupations to Mississippian sites; and highlighting the impact of environmental changes on archaeological preservation along the Wateree River.

We present a robust radiocarbon (14C) chronology for burials at Sakhtysh, in European Russia, where nearly 180 inhumations of Lyalovo and Volosovo pottery-using hunter-gatherer- fishers represent the largest known populations of both groups. Past dating attempts were restricted by poor understanding of dietary 14C reservoir effects (DREs). We developed a DRE correction approach that uses multiple linear regression of differences in 14C, d13C, and d15N between bones and teeth of the same individuals to predict DREs of up to approximately 900 years. Our chronological model dates Lyalovo burials to the early fifth millennium BCE, and Volosovo burials to the mid-fourth to early third millennium. It reveals a change in the subsistence economy at approximately 3300 BCE, coinciding with a reorientation of trade networks, and dates the final burial to the early Fatyanovo period, the regional expression of the Yamnaya/Corded Ware expansion. This paper describes a singular group of evidence gathered on a small hill at ca. 900 meters of altitude. The hill is located in mid-eastern Asturias, near the Cantabrian Mountains in the northern part of Iberia. The archaeological remains consist of one prehistoric barrow at the top part which is already included in the Sites and Monuments Record. Moreover, several other tiny elevations surround the main barrow, and around them, a few new enclosures have been identified. Despite their irregular conservation, all of them have small parapets meaning clear archaeological features. Old and new data were gathered thanks to three different techniques used in this research: fieldwork, aerial photographs and LiDAR analysis. Due to the lack of archaeological excavations and geophysics analysis, the chronology suggested here must be, at this point of the research, very broad. Finally, the manuscript explores different kinds of enclosures, from prehistoric and historic times, which can be similar to the evidence identified in el Cuetu. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

"Ashkelon 8: The Islamic and Crusader Periods" is a book review of Tracy Hoffman's publication on the excavations at Ashkelon. The volume focuses on the Islamic and Crusader periods of the site, providing insight into the city itself and the nature of the excavations. Divided into six parts, the book covers topics such as historical setting, architecture, pottery, small finds, organic remains, and conclusions. According to written histories, trepang fishers from Island Southeast Asia ("Makassans") frequented coastal northern Australia from c.1750 to 1907 CE. Yolŋu oral traditions and old Austronesian borrow words in coastal Aboriginal languages suggest a long and complex history of foreign voyaging to northern Australia. Yet archaeological radiocarbon chronologies for the Southeast Asian trepang industry and earlier voyaging encounters are few and the dates have never been comprehensively reviewed. Only one Arnhem Land trepang fishery site has been dated extensively, and others have produced unusually old dates of c.1200-1500 CE. The Groote Eylandt rockshelter of Dadirrigka yielded an enigmatic sherd of friable earthenware above a radiocarbon date of c.1100 CE. Here we have compiled, reviewed and recalibrated all 49 radiocarbon dates directly associated with Southeast Asian contact sites, stratigraphy and rock art in northern Australia. We discuss the dates and their archaeological contexts region by region to assess their reliability. We also report for the first time Yanyuwa (southwest Gulf of Carpentaria) oral traditions which shed light on their past kinship and exchange relationships with Makassan visitors. The radiocarbon dates provide tentative support for four phases of interaction in northwest Arnhem Land and Groote Eylandt, including pre-Makassan encounters and the organised trepang industry of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. There is a paucity of archaeological excavations and radiocarbon data from northeast Arnhem Land, the Kimberley and the southwest Gulf of Carpentaria, where historical writings, linguistics and oral traditions are still the most reliable indicators of the timing and nature of cross-cultural interaction. The civilization and tangible cultural heritage of the Kharga Oasis has a historical precedence over that of the old Nile Valley civilization. Approximately 12,000 years ago, a significant prehistoric migration occurred from the Kharga Oasis to the Nile Valley. This event was motivated by climate change and the southward shift of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), which caused a shift in Egypt's savannah forests from abundant vegetation to an extremely dry desert. The present study investigates the progressive deterioration of the tangible cultural and civilized legacy of the Kharga Oasis over the course of several millennia, positing that this phenomenon can be attributed to the area's vulnerability to paleoclimatic fluctuations. The evaluation of the Kharga Oasis' susceptibility to climate change was predicated on the scrutiny of petroglyphs that were unearthed at different sites within the Oasis. This analysis was reinforced by paleoclimate information and radiocarbon dating (C14). The utilization of an interdisciplinary approach yielded significant insights into the dynamic climate patterns and their effects on the Kharga Oasis across temporal scales. The results illustrated a noteworthy alteration in climate, which caused the conversion of the Oasis terrain from being heavily wooded to becoming arid, mainly due to extended periods of drought. The present research postulates a novel and alternate hypothesis concerning the archaeological chronology of human habitation in the Kharga Oasis from ancient eras, predicated on the analysis of pictorial depictions on rock surfaces. The findings of this study made a noteworthy contribution to the current corpus of knowledge regarding the vulnerability of the ancient Egyptian society to the impacts of climate variability. Moreover, the petroglyphs' depictions provided a distinctive viewpoint on the climatic fluctuations that occurred in the Sahara and North Africa throughout the Holocene epoch, as well as the fundamental causative factors. By systematically analyzing the relative relationship between complete bronze inscription dates, this study deduces the lunar phases described by the specialized terms jishengba 既生霸, jiwang 既望, and jisiba 既死霸, finding that the term chuji 初吉 is unrelated to the lunar phase. The study then reconstructs a complete chronology of Western Zhou that is highly consistent with archaeological and textual evidence. The results support the traditional notion that the Zhou calendar year began in the month containing the winter solstice, and show that the Western Zhou calendar month began with the first invisibility of the waning lunar crescent while the calendar day began at sunrise. The overall evidence indicates that King Wu 武王 led an initial campaign against the Shang in 1046 b.c.e. and defeated Zhòu 紂 in 1044 b.c.e., lending credence to the narrative of the military display at Mengjin (觀兵孟津). The derived chronology reveals a previously unknown seven-year gap between King You's 幽王 final year and King Ping's 平王 first year, thus explaining the discrepancies between Shi ji 史記 and the archaeological evidence. This study demonstrates that the Modern Text (jinben 今本) Bamboo Annals 竹書紀年 is unsuitable for use in chronological studies, and suggests that the dates of Western Zhou were already obscure in Eastern Zhou. These results provide testable hypotheses and raise new questions that can guide further research into Western Zhou archaeology, history, society, and culture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents and critically assesses the latest anthropological and archaeological research on the chronology, lethality, and frequency of violence and war in human history. Stepping back from the rhetorically polarized dispute between 'Hobbesians' and 'Rousseauans', the article examines the methods and findings of the latest research in a conceptually novel way, i.e. by dropping the existing and widely used polarized terms that have inevitably framed the literature so far. The article demonstrates that multiple sources of evidence point more in the direction of the modal human prehistoric social organization, i.e. nomadic hunter-gatherers, likely having warfare only in a minority of cases, or war even being virtually non-existent (with interpersonal violence being more common). The dispute over this claim so far is found to stem, at least in part, from the varying definitions of war and the grouping together of nomadic with complex foragers. More significantly, the disagreement is due to different sampling and sourcing techniques of different researchers, the biggest divide being between self-selection/systematic sampling and first-best/second-best sources. Important potential warlike exceptions are also noted and discussed in the article from multiple angles (Jebel Sahaba, Nataruk, Aboriginal Australia, etc.), as are the discovered precursors and enabling conditions of war, such as the complexification of (nomadic) hunter-gatherer societies with the transition to settled life. "A Biography of Power: Research and Excavations at the Iron Age Oppidum of Bagendon, Gloucestershire (1979–2017)" by T. Glass beads from two maritime sites were analyzed: the Dutch East India Company vessel Rooswijk, wrecked in 1740 on Goodwin Sands off the Kent coast, UK, and an unidentified vessel known as the Bead Wreck, located off Saint Peter Port, Guernsey, in the Channel Islands. Both vessels were carrying drawn, lead glass beads, which are found mainly in 17th- and 18th-century contexts. The study demonstrates the value of analysing glass beads from wreck sites because the information has the potential to help characterize unidentified vessels and further refine bead chronologies at post-medieval archaeological sites. The general objective is to continue thickening and completing the puzzle-like network of the spaces between the nodes that create and expand new quadrants of the field of local sociology. As materials, events dated by a chronology and documented references are considered; and how changes in its institutional framework, activities, editorial spaces, professional associations, cooperation, local and international training, access and financing for research were generated in the historical dynamics. The method is qualitative, the techniques combine interviews, documentary checklists, analysis of secondary data and content, seeking through triangulation the qualitative saturation that enables the work of registration and archiving. Among the main results and conclusions, it is evident that the field begins to be designed historically with the gradual and slow entry of the discipline by the university sociology chair, in a subordinate way to the law degree in a public university. On the other hand, after almost seven decades, the emergence of the first autonomous institutional development as a degree course in the history of the country took place in the experience of the Catholic University "Nuestra Señora de la Asunción"; and, under the modality of a private research center in the area of social sciences, that of the CPES as La Catedral with its banner, the Paraguayan Journal of Sociology, Social Sciences Publication for Latin America. The Swan Point site in interior Alaska contains a significant multi-component archaeological record dating back to 14,200 cal BP. The site's radiocarbon (14C) chronology has been presented in scattered publications that mostly focus on specific archaeological periods in Alaska, in particular its terminal Pleistocene components associated with the East Beringian tradition. This paper synthesizes the site's 14C data and provides sequential Bayesian models for its cultural zones and subzones. The 14C and archaeological record at Swan Point attests that the location was persistently used over the last 14,000 years, even though major changes are evident within regional vegetation and local faunal communities, reflecting long-term trends culminating in Dene-Athabascan history. In the last two decades, the Bronze Age chronology of the Great Urals was revolutionized by the first large-scale radiocarbon dating programs. Since then, the chronology of the Bronze Age in this area has been under discussion. In this paper, we present 23 new AMS dates from Late Bronze Age sites in the steppe and forest steppe areas of the southern Trans-Urals and northwestern Kazakhstan. This includes the first successful dating of cremated bone samples from this area. Bayesian modeling was conducted to date the Late Bronze Age into three chronological phases. The considerable number of outliers suggests previously undetected biases in the material. In addition, we found differences between the Bayesian models of the steppe and forest steppe areas that are not reflected in the archaeological record. This study emphasizes the value of Bayesian modeling for the prehistoric chronology of the Great Urals but also highlights its issues. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A set (n = 37) of new human bone radiocarbon accelerator mass spectrometry (14C AMS) dates from 11 Lithuanian Late Roman Period–Migration Period cemeteries is presented and discussed in the light of the established schemes of archaeological chronology. The focus of the paper is on the burials of the military and social elite, which indicate the emergence of new cultural traditions in E–S and W–Central Lithuania or the immigration that took place during this time. This work aims to evaluate the chronology of the conglomerate settlement of El Churcal (Calchaquí Valley, Salta), based on information provided by new radiocarbon dating conducted on samples from recent stratigraphic excavations. In addition, two previous dates of the site have been recalibrated and contextualized, and existing data on the chronology of other settlements in the region and in Northwest Argentina have been considered. Based on the new radiocarbon information, we can maintain that the occupation of El Churcal reached later dates than originally proposed, some of which overlap with the time limits currently proposed for the beginning of the Inka advance in the area. This suggests the possibility that El Churcal was occupied at the beginning of this process, which is significant for reflecting on the role of the large conglomerate settlements in the later process of regional occupation and Inka annexation. Here, we preset the first systematic archaeological surveys in the Iguazú National Park. As a result, we detected several surficial and stratigraphic sites just nearby the Iguazú falls, showing the great archaeological potential of the area. Two radiocarbon dates were obtained including the earliest date registered in Misiones province. The detection of nine new archaeological sites located on different environments and the establishment of absolute chronologies allow us to take the first steps to address the temporal and spatial variability of the archaeological signal in the study area. The Archaéo-Sexism exhibition comprises 24 posters, primarily illustrated personal testimonies of sexism in archaeological fieldwork, with the aim of promoting diversity and equality through better ethics in the world of research. The testimonies relating to sexist behaviours were collected by the Paye ta Truelle project in 2017, as part of the reaction to the global expansion of the #MeToo movement. A selection of these testimonies were illustrated in conjunction with the Archéo-Ethique Association to create a travelling exhibition. Funding from UCL in 2022 enabled the printing of this French-language exhibition for Englishspeaking audiences and the opportunity to use the exhibition to promote discussions around sexist behaviours in UK-based academic and commercial archaeological practice. Review article of the PhD dissertation submitted in 2023 to the Archaeology Doctoral Programme, Doctoral School of History, Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest, and written under the supervision of Gábor V. Szabó. The dissertation investigated the processes taking place at the end of the Early and in the Middle Bronze Age in northwest Hungary, predominantly in Gyór-Moson-Sopron County, based on sites at Nagycenk, Hegyeshalom, Enese, Gyór-Ménfócsanak, and Mosonszentmiklós. This region between the Devín Gate and the confluence of the Rába and Danube rivers is important for European research on prehistory, as it could have been a gateway between the Carpathian Basin and the western parts of Central Europe. The complex statistical evaluation of the collected archaeological finds and their contexts has revealed the diversity of the material culture (Gáta-Wieselburg, Kisapostag, Transdanubian Encrusted Pottery Culture) and mortuary practices (inhumation and cremation burial rites, diverse patterns of grave furnishing) in the study area and period. In addition, a spatial analysis of the sites indicated a change in the settlement pattern between 2200 and 1500 BC. The typochronological analysis and the radiocarbon data helped specify the chronology and refine the connections maintained with Central European territories. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Brzezie in the Pleszew region was first mentioned in archaeological literature, as the location where a treasure of gold artifacts dating back to the 3rd period of the Bronze Age was discovered in 1876. Archaeological research has been conducted there almost continuously since 1985. The result of many years of fieldwork is the discovery of 363 late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age graves, as well as 50 burials of the Przeworsk culture from the era of Roman influence. In the last few years, further research has been conducted by archeologist Grzegorz Szczurek. After comprehensive geophysical prospecting, the extent of the necropolis was established, and more graves were excavated. For the first time, materials for radiocarbon and luminescence dating were also collected to determine the absolute chronology for this archaeological site. Four samples were dated in the Poznań radiocarbon laboratory, and five luminescence tests were conducted in the Gliwice luminescence laboratory. Due to the complete thermo-destruction of collagen in human bones, age determination was based on carbonate fractionation. In one case, a piece of charcoal was selected for dating purposes. Considering uncertainties and the fact that both methods date different events, the results reveal concurrence, giving a 1000–500 BC range. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study discusses the archaeological and chronological context of a small White Lustrous Wheel-made Ware (WLW-mW) spindle bottle excavated in Ras Shamra by Claude F.-A. Schaeffer in 1933. This spindle bottle is the first of its kind to be positively identified in the Minet el-Beida/Ugarit region, but others could be also identified from Schaeffer's publications. This spindle bottle belongs to a group of now four similar small WLW-mW examples found in the eastern Mediterranean, which should probably be added to the classification of this ware as a Type IIb. More generally this article reviews the chronology of WLW-mW in the eastern Mediterranean and argues for a broad Late Bronze IB date (1550–1450 b.c.e.) for the ware. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The lack of written sources and the difficulties of establishing close chronologies from archaeological material mean that it is difficult to identify initiatives other than the commissioning of Hadrian's Wall that can confidently be attributed either to the emperor's visit to Britain in 122 or to his reign more generally. However, the early second century presents several archaeological proxies which point to a quickening of economic activity integrating the frontiers of Wales and the north of Britain with the civil zone of the south. Developments in the countryside hint at the growth of larger estates, including the emergence of larger, 'complex' farms, villages and better communications, together assuring the province's sustained ability to feed both military and civilian populations. At the same time there is evidence for public building across the towns of the south, especially of forum basilicas, which may be linked to administrative reforms including the establishment of new civitates. Rock surface luminescence dating is being increasingly applied to constrain the chronologies of geological and archaeological deposits. Here we investigate the potential of the newly developed Risø Imager, a mobile system for measurements in the field, for screening samples with desirable luminescence characteristics. We show by analysing 8 different rock samples, that the Imagers sensitivity is about 50 times lower that than the more commonly used Risø TL-OSL Reader. However, the measurement sensitivity can be improved using longer acquisition times for non-destructive infrared photoluminescence. The imager provides a far superior resolution and precision in the luminescence-depth profiles compared to the Reader, with measurement times as small as few minutes. However, based on the examination of luminescence values at zero depth, we speculate that cross-talk from the poorly-bleached, regions below the focal plane of the Imager may be a source of contamination in the luminescence depth profiles, an aspect which requires future investigations. • Sensitivity comparison of the Risø TL-OSL Reader and a portable Risø Imager. • Difference between the two systems similar across 8 different rock types. • A clear advantage of the Imager is its unprecedented spatial resolution (<100 μm). • Surface bleaching better in the Reader due to potential cross talk in Imager. • Trivial to obtain luminescence-depth profiles from the Imager in a few minutes. In order to understand the paleogeographic evolution of Viedma Lake (252 masl) sedimentary sequences with glaciolacustrine and lacustrine strata between 307 masl and 266 masl and bathymetric fluctuations between 27 ka. and 2.4 ka. were identified. The paleoenvironmental interpretation of the stratigraphic profiles was carried out based on the analysis of facies and their associations. The oldest age was recorded at 301 masl (27 ka) and the youngest corresponds to 266 masl (2.4 ka). The record of 27 ka was compared with another dated record of the Tar-San Martin Lakes basin showing that Viedma – Tar-San Martín Lakes were formed at similar ages. Taking into account that the deposits of Bahía Túnel are located at 266 masl and that the level of the lake would be above this height, it is proposed that this lake level would have restricted the movement of hunter-gatherer populations along the coast and to the west. From 2.4 ka on a new space started to be available for these populations broadening the wintering grounds (≤400 masl). The chronology of the archaeological record found in this new space fits the proposed paleogeographic evolution. This paper complements the research on the evolution of lacustrine systems in the Patagonian Mountain range and broadens the discussion of human mobility in the Viedma Lake basin during the Holocene. Understanding the use of natural corridors is critical for characterizing the past use of marginally occupied landscapes at the Andean fringes of western Patagonia by the hunter-gatherer groups who inhabited this region. In this paper, we combine least-cost path models and archaeological surveys and excavations to determine the possible movements along the southern margin of General Carrera Lake. The methodology includes defining uncertainties that allow for modeling a set of equiprobable routes, thereby avoiding problems with errors and biases from predictors, such as slope, land-use cover, and seasonality. The results identify mobility corridor bottlenecks, i.e., geographical areas with a high probability of travel routes with equiprobable routes that converge. In addition, we identify areas where travel routes are likely to diverge into multiple semi-parallel routes. The study of archaeological sites provides stratigraphic data to control for the chronology and characteristics of mobility along this transect. The correlation between archaeological sites and paths, specifically for the control and winter scenarios, shows the quality of these route predictions. These results indicate the repeated use of internodal spaces that were effectively incorporated into mobility during the last three millennia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Even historical developments which appear opaque due to limited empirical data may prove tractable when sources of diverse types are combined. For systems of three‐way inflectional contrast among imperfect indicative forms in a geographically coherent cluster of Catalan, Aragonese and Gascon varieties (e.g. first‐conjugation [kanˈtaβam] 'we sang'; third‐conjugation [peɾˈðeβam] 'we lost'; fourth‐conjugation [paˈtiβam] 'we suffered' in the Catalan variety of Castigaleu), two principal accounts have been proposed: an 'etymological' hypothesis in which three‐way imperfect contrasts represent a conservative feature continuing Latin forms, and an 'analogical' hypothesis in which thematic labials in non‐first‐conjugation imperfects are ascribed to analogical innovation. By examining historical texts, modern dialect data and areal patterns in order to develop a unified analysis of the Pyrenean systems, this study demonstrates that the modern systems result from analogical innovation, and further establishes the directionality and relative chronology of the analogical changes involved. Identifying and explaining the end of long-lived practices is a major challenge for anthropological archaeology. We present a high-precision uranium series dating (230Th/U) chronology of an undocumented aspect of Hawaiian religion: the use of corals as offerings in gardens. Our results from the upland gardens of Kealakekua (Kona District, Hawai'i Island) document the onset of religious offerings at the same time as farming in the area at around AD 1400, with no samples dating to after around AD 1635. There are similar conspicuous endings to coral offerings in temple sites on the small, isolated island of Nihoa and in the uplands of Maui. On Nihoa, the lack of coral offerings after AD 1606 can be reasonably linked to the abandonment of permanent settlement on the island. In upland Maui temple sites, as is the case in the upland gardens of Kealakekua, the end of coral offerings around AD 1600--1700 suggests a disruption to a long-lived ritual tradition at a time when other metrics point to the rise of state authority over religion. Bukit Bunuh was discovered through a special project for mapping the new archaeological and paleoenvironmental sites around the Lenggong area in 2001. Bukit Bunuh is an open Paleolithic site with 3 km2 . Dating at Bukit Bunuh involves two main studies which are archeology and geology. This dating is done using chronometric methods such as OSL, FT, ESR, K-Ar, U-Pb and 40Ar)39Ar. OSL dating was done in an archaeological study at Bukit Bunuh which gave an age of 490,000-500,000; 270,000-320,000; 40,000 dan 30,000 years ago. This dating technique was performed on the in-situ cultural layer in the excavation trench that took place in 2001, 2003, 2008 and 2010. However, according to studies the age range for the OSL dating technique is around 450,000 years ago. Dating for geological studies has been done on the impact rocks in Bukit Bunuh to determine the age of the meteorite impact that has occurred in the area. Dating via the FT method of stone tools in suevite rocks gives a date of about 1.83 million years ago. However, some other methods used such as ESR, K-Ar, U-Pb and 40Ar)39Ar have given a different age and much older which is around ~ 305 to 1.34 million years ago which shows the age of bedrock in the study area such as Triassic Granite rock. Yet the findings of stone tools in the suevit have suggested that the age of the meteorite impact that occurred at Bukit Bunuh is unlikely to be older than the Quaternary period. Therefore, this paper will examine the issues and problems that occur in the study of dating, especially for the effective age range of the dating technique used in addition to the constraints faced by the dating technique. This paper develops a regional dataset of change at 381 settlements for Lycia-Pamphylia in southwest Anatolia (Turkey) from volume 8 of the Tabula Imperii Byzantini–a compilation of historical toponyms and archaeological evidence. This region is rich in archaeological remains and high-quality paleo-climatic and -environmental archives. Our archaeological synthesis enables direct comparison of these datasets to discuss current hypotheses of climate impacts on historical societies. A Roman Climatic Optimum, characterized by warmer and wetter conditions, facilitating Roman expansion in the 1st-2nd centuries CE cannot be supported here, as Early Byzantine settlement did not benefit from enhanced precipitation in the 4th-6th centuries CE as often supposed. However, widespread settlement decline in a period with challenging archaeological chronologies (c. 550–650 CE) was likely caused by a "perfect storm" of environmental, climatic, seismic, pathogenic and socio-economic factors, though a shift to drier conditions from c. 460 CE appears to have preceded other factors by at least a century. "The Times of Their Lives: Hunting History in the Archaeology of Neolithic Europe" by Alasdair Whittle explores the relationship between history and prehistory, arguing that prehistorians should aspire to write a type of fine-grained narrative that operates at a scale of generations. The book draws on the results of the ERC-funded 'Times of Their Lives' research project, which used Bayesian modeling of radiocarbon dates to construct detailed chronologies for European Neolithic sites. Whittle examines the potential for new ideas about European Neolithic societies and defends social archaeology against recent theoretical turns. The book also highlights the dynamic nature of the Neolithic period, with rapid growth and decline, boom and bust, and sudden tipping points. In the course of a survey carried out on the borders of Taşlıca village in the Karpas Peninsula a new archaeological site was recorded. To evaluate the historical role of the area, work at Taşlıca was carried out with special care and was named Taşlıca-Mersincik in the literature. The limits of the archaeological site and its chronology were determined. Within the site which will be declared to the scientific world as Taşlıca-Mersincik, pottery, fragments and unfinished statues, as well as architectural stone sculpture and structural pieces were identified. Among the many finds is a select group consisting of 24 statue fragments, carved stone, and terracotta fragments. Together with diagnostic pottery from the surface they were used for a chronological comparison with other sites. The great majority of the Taşlıca-Mersincik pottery, consisting of coarse ware and vessels for everyday use, belongs to Cypro-Archaic II. The existence of a very small number of pieces of Late Roman date demonstrated the existence of a later occupation as well, but no continuous settlement. Ceramic cinders retrieved within the area, might point to pottery production or ritual activities at the site. The sculptural fragments show both domestic and foreign characteristics and belong to the second half of the Archaic II phase. They indicate a possible sculpture work-shop showing international influences. The location of the site close to important straits and harbour areas, as well as the multicultural nature of the artefacts hints at overseas contacts and a possible harbour site at the coast. As a result of the survey at Taşlıca-Mersincik, information concerning the sociocultural and economic life of the settlement was recorded. Thus, it is likely that, as a result of future stratigraphical excavation, the role of the settlement, as well as that of the Karpas Peninsula, within the eastern Mediterranean networks might become much clearer. Recent works on collaboration during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945) have contributed much to the field by focusing on the concrete functioning of institutions in occupied China. Yet, a more systematic definition of the process by which these institutions took shape is necessary in order to better understand how state making in occupied China relates to the longue durée of the Chinese state, on the one hand, and to Japan's imperial endeavor, on the other. This article aims to fill this gap by proposing a new definition of state making in occupied China and providing an overview that clarifies both the chronology of the occupation state and the roles of key actors within it. Ultimately, it makes the case for a reassessment of the occupation state as one of the competing political realms that contributed to shape the modern Chinese state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Clazomenian Sarcophagi is one of the important field of study regarding the Ionian pictorial art during the Archaic and Classical periods. These sarcophagi made their appearances in Clazomenae in the third quarter of the 7th century B.C. and preserved their existence well into the Classical period. The discussions on styles and chronology of painters who decorated them are still ongoing. One of the most authentic sarcophagus painter who produced in the 5th century B.C. is Hopkinson Painter the individual who was defined by R.M. Cook. More sarcophagi have been unearthed elsewhere by the agency of recent excavations.
