ABSTRACT Quadrupedal animals traveling on arboreal supports change aspects of locomotion to avoid slipping and falls. This study compares locomotor biomechanics in two small mammals: first, the gray short‐tailed opossum (Monodelphis domestica) predominantly trots, which is a symmetrical gait. The second species, the Siberian chipmunk (Tamias sibiricus), primarily bounds or half‐bounds. Trotting and bounding differ fundamentally in three aspects: location and timing of hand and foot placement; in the way that the trunk bends (trotting, mediolateral bending; bounding, flexion, and extension); and in the dynamics of the center of mass. Both species ran on a flat track and a 2 cm diameter cylindrical track, instrumented with a force plate or pole. For bounding chipmunks, the force pole was modified to measure force only on the right side. We measured speed, duty factor, and force, and calculated vertical, braking, propulsive, and net mediolateral impulses. Vertical and fore‐aft impulses were different between trotting opossums and bounding chipmunks, but between trackway types, these impulses were similar within each species. The modifications used by each species to travel on arboreal supports were similar, except in one important respect. Net mediolateral impulse in opossums changed from laterally directed on the flat trackway to medial on the arboreal. But in chipmunks, these impulses on the flat track were medially‐directed, and on the arboreal track, the amount of variability was substantially greater. We conclude that chipmunks—and perhaps any bounding animal—are less consistent from stride to stride in their locomotion. As an arboreal animal, tree frogs face diverse challenges when landing on perches, including variations in substrate shape, diameter, flexibility, and angular distribution, with potentially significant consequences for failed landings. Research on tree frog landing behavior on perches, especially concerning landing on vertical substrates, remains limited. This study investigated the landing strategies (forelimb, abdomen, and hindlimb) of tree frogs on vertical perches, considering perch diameter. Although all three strategies were observed across perches of different diameters, their frequencies differed. Forelimb landing was most common across all perch diameters, with its frequency increasing with perch diameter, while abdomen and hindlimb landing strategies were more prevalent on smaller diameter perches. During the process from take‐off to landing, the body axis underwent some deviation owing to the asymmetric movement of the left and right limbs; however, these deviations did not significantly differ among landing strategies. Additionally, different landing strategies led to variations in the landing forces, with abdominal landings generating significantly higher impact forces than the other two strategies. These findings provide insights into the biomechanics and biological adaptations of tree frogs when landing on challenging substrates, such as leaves or branches. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tails play essential roles in functions related to locomotor stability and maneuverability among terrestrial and arboreal animals. In kangaroo rats, bipedal hopping rodents, tails are used as effective inertial appendages for stability in hopping, but also facilitate stability and maneuverability during predator escape leaps. The complexity of tail functionality shows great potential for bio-inspiration and robotic device design, as maneuvering is accomplished by a long and light-weight inertial appendage. To (1) further understand the mechanics of how kangaroo rats use their tails during aerial maneuvers and (2) explore if we can achieve this behavior with a simplified tail-like appendage (i.e. template), we combined quantified animal observations, computational simulations, and experiments with a two degrees of freedom (2-DoF) tailed robot. We used video data from free-ranging kangaroo rats escaping from a simulated predator and analyzed body and tail motion for the airborne phase. To explain tail contributions to body orientation (i.e. spatial reorientation), we built a mid-air kangaroo rat computational model and demonstrated that the three-dimensional body orientation of the model can be controlled by a simplified 2-DoF tail with a nonlinear control strategy. Resulting simulated trajectories show movement patterns similar to those observed in kangaroo rats. Our robot experiments show that a lightweight tail can generate a large yaw displacement and stabilize pitch and roll angles to zero simultaneously. Our work contributes to better understanding of the form-function relationship of the kangaroo rat tail and lays out an important foundation for bio-inspiration in robotic devices that have lightweight tail-like appendages for mid-air maneuvering. The expansion of transportation and service corridors has numerous, well-documented adverse effects on wildlife. However, little research on this topic has been translated into mitigating the effects of habitat fragmentation caused by road development on primates. The establishment of canopy bridges has proven to be an effective conservation intervention. Of the completed primate canopy bridge projects reported in the literature, to our knowledge, all attempt to mitigate the impacts caused by singular, linear infrastructure routes. Here we provide recommendations for the establishment of a network of natural and artificial canopy bridges over roads throughout Langkawi Island, Malaysia, to reduce rates of roadkill and support the movement of primates and other arboreal animals across the island by identifying suitable sites and appropriate tree species to be planted (including Ficus racemosa and Ficus fistulosa), bridge materials and post-installation monitoring. The establishment of this pioneering trans-island canopy bridge network could function as a model to enhance connectivity for arboreal animals in other important wildlife habitat sites in Malaysia and beyond that are affected by fragmentation from linear infrastructure. Small ape habitat is rapidly declining due to anthropogenic activities but the current population status of this endangered primate family in Malaysia remains unknown. Group densities of Hylobates lar and Symphalangus syndactylus in two adjacent forest reserves across the Sungai Yu Ecological Corridor (SYEC) in Merapoh, a critical connectivity area of the Central Forest Spine, were assessed. Vegetation assessment and satellite imagery were used to identify habitat characteristics and fixed-point active acoustic triangulation at six listening areas was conducted to estimate small ape group densities. Small ape habitat quality was high in the forested areas of the SYEC. The mean group density of H. lar across these six areas was 3.55 ± 0.9 groups km-² while the mean group density of S. syndactylus was 2.75 ± 1.0 groups km-². The mean group densities of small apes at SYEC were moderately high, compared with densities at other sites in the region, which suggests that the forests here constitute good habitat for both species, despite some observed anthropogenic disturbances. Both species occurred in all listening areas. A nationwide population census for small apes and regular monitoring to inform conservation planning are recommended. Further improvement to connectivity across the SYEC by installing artificial canopy bridges for arboreal animals is important to support the movement of small apes across habitat fragments in Merapoh. Understanding the locomotor characteristics of early diverging ground‐walking chameleons (members of the genera Brookesia, Rhampholeon, Palleon, and Rieppeleon) can help to explain how their unique morphology is adapted to fit their environment and mode of life. However, nearly all quantitative studies of chameleon locomotion thus far have focused on the larger "true arboreal" chameleons. We investigated kinematics and spatiotemporal gait characteristics of the Brown Leaf Chameleon (Brookesia superciliaris) on different substrates and compared them with true arboreal chameleons, nonchameleon lizards, and other small arboreal animals. Brookesia exhibits a combination of locomotor traits, some of which are traditionally arboreal, others more terrestrial, and a few that are very unusual. Like other chameleons, Brookesia moved more slowly on narrow dowels than on broad planks (simulating arboreal and terrestrial substrates, respectively), and its speed was primarily regulated by stride frequency rather than stride length. While Brookesia exhibits the traditionally arboreal trait of a high degree of humeral protraction at the beginning of stance, unlike most arboreal tetrapods, it uses smaller shoulder and hip excursions on narrower substrates, possibly reflecting its more terrestrial habits. When moving at very slow speeds, Brookesia often adopts an unusual footfall pattern, lateral‐sequence lateral‐couplets. Because Brookesia is a member of one of the earliest‐diverging groups of chameleons, its locomotion may provide a good model for an intermediate stage in the evolution of arboreal chameleons. Thus, the transition to a fully arboreal way of life in "true arboreal" chameleons may have involved changes in spatiotemporal and kinematic characteristics as well as morphology. Drones (unmanned aerial vehicles, UAVs), are an advanced technology that allows the collection of large amounts of data in a short amount of time, including the detection of cryptic and arboreal animals. Here, we report the first records of the southern maned sloth Bradypus crinitus obtained with thermal cameras from a drone. As far as we know, this is the first time a sloth has been observed by a drone. We recorded four individuals of B. crinitus in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, plus first records of Procyon cancrivorus, which were all resting in the forest canopy. The individuals' thermal responses demonstrate that the use of drones for research on these species may be a viable option to study still unexplored aspects of their ecology or conservation. This paper proposes the optimal design and simulation analysis of a robot for tree-climbing, which has the ability to climb up the tree trunk to adapt to different tree diameter changes. In an unstructured forest environment, considering that the Tree-Climbing Robot (TCR) may collide with branches, reducing the success rate of tree climbing, the mechanical structure and movement strategy to avoid branches are predesigned. The presented TCR mimics several design principles that have been adapted to arboreal animals, including claw-hand grasping and climbing gait movements, and is optimally designed to achieve high manoeuvrability on irregularly shaped trees. Based on the D-H parameterization method, the kinematics model of the TCR is developed and its kinematic equations are solved. The accuracy of the kinematic equations is verified by MATLAB, and the reachable area of the working space of the manipulator of the TCR is determined. Using ADAMS to analyse the kinematics and dynamics of the climbing process of the TCR, the rationality of the gait planning of the robot is verified, and the time-varying characteristic curves of each physical quantity of each structural joint are derived and further simulated through numerical analysis, the results of which will profoundly validate the technical feasibility and design innovation of this presented TCR. The fauna of arboreal hemiptera of mountain ecosystems of south-eastern Kazakhstan includes 51 species from 10 families: Tingidae, Nabidae, Anthocoridae, Reduviidae, Miridae, Aradidae, Lygaeidae, Coreidae, Acanthosomatidae, Pentatomidae. According to trophic specialization, they are divided into 4 groups: mycetophages (3 species), phytophages (22 species), zoophytophages (8 species); zoophages (18 species), and according to life forms they are distributed into 5 groups: dendrobiont (28 species), dendro-tamnobiont (8 species), dendro-tamno-hortobiont (4 species), dendro-hortobiont (10 species); eurybiont (1 species), according to the number of generations per year, arboreal hemiptera are divided into 6 groups: monovoltine (37 species), bivoltine (5 species), 2-3 generations per year (3 species), polyvoltine (2 species), acyclic (3 species), the number of generations is unknown (1 species). Among the arboreal hemiptera of Kungei Alatau, 29 species hibernate in the imago stage, 13 species in the egg stage, 7 species in the larval and imago stages, and 2 species in the larval stage. There are 2 ecological groups in the woody hemipterofauna of mountain ecosystems of south-eastern Kazakhstan: meso-xerophiles (2 species), mesophiles (49 species). Economically, the fauna of arboreal hemiptera includes both harmful and beneficial species. Most of the harmful species belong to the families Tingidae, Miridae, Aradidae, Lygaeidae, Coreidae, Acanthosomatidae, Pentatomidae. Predatory species (Nabidae, Anthocoridae, Reduviidae, Pentatomidae, subfamilies Asopinae) are useful for humans, as they regulate the number of harmful insects in biocenoses. Analysis of the geographical distribution of the hemiptera of mountain ecosystems of south-eastern Kazakhstan allowed us to identify 17 types of species ranges. The fauna is based on species of hemiptera with Holarctic, trans-Palearctic, Western Palearctic, Trans-Eurasian, Western Eurasian habitats. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main features of the ecology and behavior of the slender-tailed tree shrew based on observations in southern Vietnam at Cat Tien National Park (11°25′ N, 107°25′ E) are described. Slender-tailed tree shrews inhabit parts of forests where bamboo or rattan grows, abandoned gardens, and fields overgrown with tall grasses and bamboo. They consume insects and spiders found on the ground surface and in leaf piles and seek invertebrates inside rotten trunks. Tree shrews trace birds and catch disturbed prey; sometimes, they try to steal food caught by birds. Usually, these shrews build individual nests with dry leaves for night rest in open places without any shelters. During the period of observations (November–June), tree shrews were found in pairs on small (~0.5 ha) territories. The animals in pairs maintained visual or acoustic contacts with each other. They designated territories by cries and odor marks that were left on bamboo stems or rattan lianas. Several territorial conflicts were observed. Copulation took place in February–March, and the young appeared in March–April. In spite of the active use of the ground surface, the slender-tailed tree shrew has locomotion typical for an arboreal animal, in contrast to the majority of representatives of the Tupaiidae family. Arboreal animals must learn to modulate their movements to overcome the challenges posed by the complexity of their heterogeneous environment, reduce performance failure, and survive. Anolis lizards are remarkable in the apparent ease with which they conquer this heterogeneity, demonstrating an impressive ability to modulate their locomotor behavior to maintain stable locomotion on widely disparate surfaces. Significant progress has been made towards understanding the impact of substrate structure on the behavioral plasticity of arboreal species, but it is unclear whether the same strategies employed to shift between substrates in one context can be employed to shift between those same substrates in a new context. Is the kinematic shift between broad and narrow perches achieved in a similar way on different inclines? Do all species within an ecomorph make similar adjustments? Here, we analyze the limb movements of two trunk-crown Anolis ecomorphs, Anolis carolinensis and Anolis evermanni , running on 6 different surfaces (3 inclinations × 2 perch diameters), from the perspective of Transfer Learning. Transfer learning is that field of machine learning which aims at exploiting the knowledge gained from one task to improve generalization about another, related task. In our setting, we use transfer learning to show that the strategies employed to improve locomotor stability on narrow perches are transferred across environments with different inclines. Further, behaviors used on vertical inclines are shared, and thus transfer well, across perch diameters whereas the relationship between horizontal and intermediate inclines change on different perch diameters, leading to lower transfer learning of shallow inclines across perch diameters. Interestingly, the best incline for transfer of behavior differs between limbs: forelimb models learn best from the vertical incline and hind limb models learn best from horizontal and intermediate inclines. Finally, our results suggest both that subtle differences exist in how A. carolinensis and A. evermanni adjust their behaviors in typical trunk-crown environments and that they may have converged on similar strategies for modulating forelimb behavior on vertical surfaces and hind limb behavior on shallow surfaces. The transfer of behavior is analogous to phenotypic plasticity, which likely plays a key role in the rapid adaptive evolution characteristic of Anolis lizards. This work is an example of how modern statistical methodology can provide an interesting perspective on new biological questions, such as on the role and nuances of behavioral plasticity and the key behaviors that help shape the versatility and rapid evolution of Anolis lizards. Summary: Roads and other linear infrastructure create treeless gaps that can limit the movement of non‐flying, arboreal animals. These negative effects are particularly strong in dense forests, where even narrow infrastructure corridors represent a significant change in habitat structure. Artificial canopy bridges are an increasingly common approach to mitigating the barrier effect of roads and other linear infrastructure on the movement of arboreal mammals; however, questions remain about the success of various designs for different species. Here we conduct an experimental evaluation of the response of a critically endangered possum, Leadbeater's Possum (Gymnobelideus leadbeateri), to two artificial canopy bridge designs: single‐rope bridges and ladder bridges. We found that both bridges were used by Leadbeater's Possum and five other species of arboreal marsupial to cross narrow, forestry roads. However, Leadbeater's Possums crossed ladder bridges 13 times more often than the single‐rope design (average of 564.5 and 41.75 crossings per design respectively). Radiotelemetry conducted on four Leadbeater's Possums prior to bridge installation detected no road crossings, providing preliminary evidence that the bridges improved cross‐road movement. Ladder bridges appear to be the better design choice for a wider range of arboreal marsupials as they were used more frequently, offer greater stability, and provide better predator avoidance than single‐rope designs. Studies on positional behavior and canopy use are essential for understanding how arboreal animals adapt their morphological characteristics and behaviors to the challenges of their environment. This study explores canopy and substrate use along with positional behavior in adult black snub-nosed monkeys Rhinopithecus strykeri , an endemic, critically endangered primate species in Gaoligong Mountains, southwest China. Using continuous focal animal sampling, we collected data over a 52-month period and found that R. strykeri is highly arboreal primarily using the high layers of the forest canopy (15–30 m), along with the terminal zone of tree crowns (52.9%), medium substrates (41.5%), and oblique substrates (56.8%). We also found sex differences in canopy and substrate use. Females use the terminal zones (56.7% versus 40.4%), small/medium (77.7% versus 60.1%), and oblique (59.9% versus 46.5%) substrates significantly more than males. On the other hand, males spend more time on large/very large (39.9% versus 22.3%) and horizontal (49.7% versus 35.2%) substrates. Whereas both sexes mainly sit (84.7%), and stand quadrupedally (9.1%), males stand quadrupedally (11.5% versus 8.3%), and bipedally (2.9% versus 0.8%) more often than females. Clamber, quadrupedalism, and leap/drop are the main locomotor modes for both sexes. Rhinopithecus strykeri populations never enter canopies of degenerated secondary forest and mainly use terminal branches in the middle and upper layers of canopies in intact mid-montane moist evergreen broadleaf forest and hemlock coniferous broadleaf mixed forests across their habitat. Arboreal environments require overcoming navigational challenges not typically encountered in other terrestrial habitats. Supports are unevenly distributed and vary in diameter, orientation, and compliance. To better understand the strategies that arboreal animals use to maintain stability in this environment, laboratory researchers must endeavor to mimic those conditions. Here, we evaluate how squirrel monkeys (Saimiri boliviensis) adjust their locomotor mechanics in response to variation in support diameter and compliance. We used high‐speed cameras to film two juvenile female monkeys as they walked across poles of varying diameters (5, 2.5, and 1.25 cm). Poles were mounted on either a stiff wooden base ("stable" condition) or foam blocks ("compliant" condition). Six force transducers embedded within the pole trackway recorded substrate reaction forces during locomotion. We predicted that squirrel monkeys would walk more slowly on narrow and compliant supports and adopt more "compliant" gait mechanics, increasing stride lengths, duty factors, and an average number of limbs gripping the support, while the decreasing center of mass height, stride frequencies, and peak forces. We observed few significant adjustments to squirrel monkey locomotor kinematics in response to changes in either support diameter or compliance, and the changes we did observe were often tempered by interactions with locomotor speed. These results differ from a similar study of common marmosets (i.e., Callithrix jacchus, with relatively poor grasping abilities), where variation in diameter and compliance substantially impacted gait kinematics. Squirrel monkeys' strong grasping apparatus, long and mobile tails, and other adaptations for arboreal travel likely facilitate robust locomotor performance despite substrate precarity. Bone fractures are common in wild animals, especially arboreal ones. A raccoon belonging to a private zoo was brought to our clinic with a history of a dog attack. It was diagnosed with incoordination due to head trauma and a fracture of the middle diaphyseal humerus. The fracture was treated using an intramedullary partially threaded tipped pin. After the treatment, the raccoon was returned to the zoo for care and survival. After 4 months, the raccoon was able to use her arm as before. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Canopy bridges are crossing structures specific to mitigate the impact of roads on arboreal animals. Long-term monitoring of such infrastructures together with the analysis of design preferences has never been done in South America. To avoid the roadkills of a threatened primate species, the black lion tamarin (Leontopithecus chrysopygus), in Guareí, São Paulo, Brazil, we installed two designs of canopy bridges: a wood pole bridge and a rope bridge. We aimed to (1) evaluate the functionality (number of species and events) of both designs, (2) test the design preference of each species, and (3) determine if there were seasonal differences in the use of canopy bridges. We monitored the canopy bridges continuously since their installation with camera traps during 3 years. We recorded nine mammal and one lizard species crossing on the canopy bridges as well as 13 bird species using them as perches. Overall, the probability of crossing was higher on the wood pole bridge and the number of crossings, considering both designs, was higher during the dry season. One lizard and seven mammal species used the wood pole bridge, including the black lion tamarin, and six mammal species used the rope bridge. Four out of five species tested, including the black lion tamarin, preferred the wood pole bridge. While replications of this experimental design are necessary to obtain a more robust evaluation of the effectiveness of these canopy bridges, our study suggests that wood pole bridges might be an effective tool to reduce roadkills of the endangered black lion tamarin and possibly other arboreal species. Arboreal animals often leap through complex canopies to travel and avoid predators. Their success at making split-second, potentially life-threatening decisions of biomechanical capability depends on their skillful use of acrobatic maneuvers and learning from past efforts. Here, we found that free-ranging fox squirrels (Sciurus niger) leaping across unfamiliar, simulated branches decided where to launch by balancing a trade-off between gap distance and branch-bending compliance. Squirrels quickly learned to modify impulse generation upon repeated leaps from unfamiliar, compliant beams. A repertoire of agile landing maneuvers enabled targeted leaping without falling. Unanticipated adaptive landing and leaping “parkour” behavior revealed an innovative solution for particularly challenging leaps. Arboreal animals face numerous challenges when negotiating complex three-dimensional terrain. Directed aerial descent or gliding flight allows for rapid traversal of arboreal environments, but presents control challenges. Some animals, such as birds or gliding squirrels, have specialized structures to modulate aerodynamic forces while airborne. However, many arboreal animals do not possess these specializations but still control posture and orientation in mid-air. One of the largest inertial segments in lizards is their tail. Inertial reorientation can be used to attain postures appropriate for controlled aerial descent. Here, we discuss the role of tail inertia in a range of mid-air reorientation behaviors using experimental data from geckos in combination with mathematical and robotic models. Geckos can self-right in mid-air by tail rotation alone. Equilibrium glide behavior of geckos in a vertical wind tunnel show that they can steer toward a visual stimulus by using rapid, circular tail rotations to control pitch and yaw. Multiple coordinated tail responses appear to be required for the most effective terminal velocity gliding. A mathematical model allows us to explore the relationship between morphology and the capacity for inertial reorientation by conducting sensitivity analyses, and testing control approaches. Robotic models further define the limits of performance and generate new control hypotheses. Such comparative analysis allows predictions about the diversity of performance across lizard morphologies, relative limb proportions, and provides insights into the evolution of aerial behaviors. Locomotion on the narrow and compliant supports of the arboreal environment is inherently precarious. Previous studies have identified a host of morphological and behavioral specializations in arboreal animals broadly thought to promote stability when on precarious substrates. Less well-studied is the role of the tail in maintaining balance. However, prior anatomical studies have found that arboreal taxa frequently have longer tails for their body size than their terrestrial counterparts, and prior laboratory studies of tail kinematics and the effects of tail reduction in focal taxa have broadly supported the hypothesis that the tail is functionally important for maintaining balance on narrow and mobile substrates. In this set of studies, we extend this work in two ways. First, we used a laboratory dataset on three-dimensional segmental kinematics and tail inertial properties in squirrel monkeys (Saimiri boliviensis) to investigate how tail angular momentum is modulated during steady-state locomotion on narrow supports. In the second study, we used a quantitative dataset on quadrupedal locomotion in wild platyrrhine monkeys to investigate how free-ranging arboreal animals adjust tail movements in response to substrate variation, focusing on kinematic measures validated in prior laboratory studies of tail mechanics (including the laboratory data presented). Our laboratory results show that S. boliviensis significantly increase average tail angular momentum magnitudes and amplitudes on narrow supports, and primarily regulate that momentum by adjusting the linear and angular velocity of the tail (rather than via changes in tail posture per se). We build on these findings in our second study by showing that wild platyrrhines responded to the precarity of narrow and mobile substrates by extending the tail and exaggerating tail displacements, providing ecological validity to the laboratory studies of tail mechanics presented here and elsewhere. In conclusion, our data support the hypothesis that the long and mobile tails of arboreal animals serve a biological role of enhancing stability when moving quadrupedally over narrow and mobile substrates. Tail angular momentum could be used to cancel out the angular momentum generated by other parts of the body during steady-state locomotion, thereby reducing whole-body angular momentum and promoting stability, and could also be used to mitigate the effects of destabilizing torques about the support should the animals encounter large, unexpected perturbations. The ability to safely ascend and descend is critical to the success of arboreal animals. Nonprimate mammals typically descend supports headfirst aided by their claws, but primates must rely on grasping, and use a variety of behaviors to move down within an arboreal environment, including headfirst and tailfirst descending. This study assesses hypothesized body mass limits on vertical headfirst descent and identifies approximate support orientations and diameters at which headfirst descent is ceased in a sample of nine strepsirrhines species ranging in mass from 0.06 to 4.5 kg. Species under 1 kg, arboreal quadrupeds Cheirogaleus medius and Microcebus murinus, and slow climber Nycticebus pygmaeus, always descended supports headfirst regardless of orientation and diameter as long as a grasp could be established. Arboreal quadrupedal species above 1 kg, Daubetonia madagascariensis, Eulemur coronatus, Eulemur mongoz, Lemur catta, and Varecia variegata differed in the orientation at which they ceased using headfirst descent and the types of alternative descending behaviors they employed. Lemur catta, a highly terrestrial species, started to employ tailfirst descents at 45° and completely stopped using headfirst descent on steeper and thicker supports. Other arboreal quadrupeds, D. madagascariensis, E. coronatus, E. mongoz, and V. variegata, began using tailfirst descent at 60°. The vertical clinging and leaping species Propithecus coquereli rarely engaged in above branch quadrupedalism, and individuals were observed using tailfirst descents on supports as shallow as 15°. This study shows the ways in which mass and anatomy may constrain use of headfirst descent through arboreal environments, and the alternate strategies strepsirrhine primates employ to descend. Background: Efficient and safe movement is fundamental for wild birds to thrive in their environments. For arboreal forest animals, especially birds, canopy cover has a large impact on birds' daily movements and is a crucial component of conservation strategies seeking to retain avian population in disturbed or urban habitats. Methods: We translocated woodland bird species utilizing different forest strata during two non-breeding seasons in Gainesville, FL, USA. We used linear model and generalized linear model to examine the effects of canopy cover and species identity on homing success and speed. Results: Among our study species of Tufted Titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor), Carolina Chickadee (Poecile carolinensis), and Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis), we found that Carolina Chickadees and Tufted Titmice were more likely to return than Northern Cardinals. Among birds that successfully returned, homing speed is significantly affected by forest canopy cover and species identity (titmice had higher homing speed than cardinals). Birds return much faster in landscape with higher canopy cover. Conclusions: This study presented evidence of species identity's effect on homing success and speed in common feeder bird species in Southeast US and provided further evidence that bird movements in the suburban land cover are constrained by low canopy cover. Arboreal mammals have evolved a range of biomechanical adaptations that allow them to navigate trees effectively. One such feature that has received considerable attention is the importance of vision that helps arboreal animals assess gap distances, assure proper foot placement, and inspect potential risks. While there is considerable debate about the relative importance of the visual system specifics, there is little doubt that the ability to at least see the environment must confer some level of safety when navigating arboreal substrates. In this study, we explore spatiotemporal and kinematic patterns of arboreal locomotion in the Vietnamese pygmy dormouse (Typhlomys chapensis), a blind rodent that uses ultrasonic echolocation to navigate in tree canopies. We compare these data with five other species of arboreal rodents and primates. Spatiotemporal gait characteristics are largely similar between the Vietnamese pygmy dormouse and other small‐bodied arboreal species analyzed. Most notable is the tendency for relatively high‐speed asymmetrical gaits on large‐diameter substrates and slower symmetrical lateral‐sequence gaits on small‐diameter substrates. Furthermore, for all species speed is primarily regulated by increasing stride frequency rather than length. Kinematics of the Vietnamese pygmy dormouse changed little in response substrate size and were primarily driven by speed. These findings suggest that the information gathered during ultrasonic scanning is sufficient to allow effective quadrupedal locomotion while moving on arboreal supports. The Vietnamese pygmy dormouse may serve as a model for the quadrupedal nocturnal ancestor of bats, which had started developing ultrasonic echolocation and reducing vision while likely occupying an arboreal niche. X-ray computed tomography of the cladotherian Henkelotherium guimarotae from the Kimmeridgian Guimarota coal mine (Portugal) adds new information on its postcranial skeleton. Contrary to earlier description, the humerus of Henkelotherium shows a plesiomorphic cladotherian condition similar to that seen in Dryolestes leiriensis in having individual radial and ulnar condyles on the anterior aspect of the distal joint, whereas the posterior aspect appears to be trochlear. The scapula is also more plesiomorphic than previously assumed in having a laterally flared crest on the inferior margin. In this regard, it is similar to the scapula of spalacotherioid "symmetrodontans" such as Zhangheotherium but more derived than the latter, in having a larger supraspinous fossa. The hind limb is similar to that of small extant therians, which is interpreted to be assocated with an upright limb posture. The previously proposed hypothesis of an arboreal lifestyle for Henkelotherium is corroborated by a number of skeletal features such as large humeral entepicondyles, prominent digital flexor tubercles, elongated and slender tail vertebrae, as well as a high pedal phalangeal index of 153%. Objectives: The guenons (tribe Cercopithecini) are a diverse and primarily arboreal radiation of Old World monkeys from Africa. However, preliminary behavioral observations of the lesula (Cercopithecus lomamiensis), a little‐known guenon species described in 2012, report it spending substantial amounts of time on the ground. New specimens allow us to present the first description of lesula postcranial morphology and apply a comparative functional morphology approach to supplement our knowledge of its locomotor behavior. Materials and methods: To infer the substrate use preferences of the lesula, 22 postcranial variables correlated with locomotion were assessed in a sample of 151 adult guenon specimens, including two C. lomamiensis. Using multivariate statistical analyses, we predict the amount of time the lesula spends on the ground relative to the comparative sample. Results: Results suggest that the lesula spends nearly half its time on the ground, and the two available individuals were classified as semiterrestrial and terrestrial with strong support. Comparisons with two outgroup cercopithecid taxa (Colobus guereza and Macaca mulatta) demonstrate that, as a group, guenons retain signals of a generalized, semiterrestrially adapted postcranium compared to specialized arboreal cercopithecids. Discussion: These results corroborate preliminary behavioral observations of the lesula as a semiterrestrial to terrestrial primate and imply multiple evolutionary transitions in substrate use among the guenon radiation. A broader view of cercopithecoid evolution suggests that a semiterrestrial ancestor for extant guenons is more parsimonious than an arboreal one, indicating that the arboreal members of the group are probably recently derived from a more semiterrestrial ancestor. Although roads are often assumed to be barriers to the dispersal of arboreal species, there has been little empirical testing of this assumption. If arboreal animals are unable to cross roads, population subdivision may occur, or resources may become inaccessible. We tested the hypothesis that Route Nationale 4 (RN4), a paved highway, was a barrier to movement and dispersal of the Endangered golden-brown mouse lemur Microcebus ravelobensis in Ankarafantsika National Park, in north-west Madagascar. During June–August 2015 we conducted a capture–mark–recapture study at three sites: two adjacent to RN4 and one within intact forest without a potential barrier. During 2,294 trap nights we captured 120 golden-brown mouse lemurs 1,032 times. In roadside habitats we captured significantly more males than females, whereas the opposite was the case in interior forest habitat. We detected eighteen crossings of highway transects by nine individuals; however, all potential dispersal events involved males. In roadside habitat, movement was significantly inhibited in both males and females. We present some of the first data on the effects of roads on movement patterns in arboreal Malagasy mammals, showing species- and sex-biased effects of roads as dispersal barriers. Our findings indicate that roads may not be complete barriers to dispersal in lemurs. Ficus species are keystone plants in tropical rainforests, and hemi-epiphytic figs play a notably important role in forest ecosystems. Because hemi-epiphytic figs have strict germination requirements, germination and establishment stages regulate their populations. Despite the ecological importance of hemi-epiphytic figs in the rainforests, seed dispersal systems by fig-eating animals under natural conditions remain unknown because of the difficulty in tracing the destiny of dispersed seeds in the canopy. Therefore, seed dispersal effectiveness (SDE) has never been evaluated for hemi-epiphytic figs. We evaluated the SDE of hemi-epiphytic figs using qualitative and quantitative components by three relatively large-sized (> 3 kg) arboreal and volant animals in Bornean rainforests that largely depend on fig fruits in their diets: binturongs Arctictis binturong, Mueller’s gibbons Hylobates muelleri, and helmeted hornbills Rhinoplax vigil. The SDE values of binturongs was by far the highest among the three study animals. Meanwhile, successful seed dispersal of hemi-epiphytic figs by gibbons and helmeted hornbills is aleatory and rare. Given that seed deposition determines the fate of hemi-epiphytic figs, the defecatory habits of binturongs, depositing feces on specific microsites in the canopy, is the most reliable dispersal method, compared to scattering feces from the air or upper canopy. We showed that reliable directed dispersal of hemi-epiphytic figs occurs in high and uneven canopy of Bornean rainforests. This type of dispersal is limited to specific animal species, and therefore it may become one of the main factors regulating low-success hemi-epiphytic fig recruitment in Bornean rainforests. Natal dispersal is influenced by many environmental and biological factors and can be a time of elevated mortality risk. We aimed to understand how physical, behavioral, and demographic traits of mothers and juveniles influenced natal dispersal by studying a population of brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) reintroduced to their former range. We used radiotracking and trapping to intensively monitor the growth, survival, shelter use, and movement of juveniles and their mothers from pouch young to adulthood over a 22-month study period. We recorded multiple dispersal movement phases, with males undergoing more phases than females (6 versus 4) and dispersing 16 times farther. Dispersal age was positively related to maternal body mass for males but not females. Mothering behavior varied with offspring sex, with mothers tending to shelter daughters in a higher proportion of new shelter sites compared to sons. Females matured at a younger age and mass than males, and possums that left their mother at an earlier age reached sexual maturity earlier, regardless of sex. The timing of dispersal by males was not influenced by body mass, age, sexual maturity, rainfall, or the age of their younger sibling. Survival of juveniles (63%) was not related to sex or dispersal phase but instead sexual maturity, suggesting an effect of experience. Sex, maternal effects, and an interaction between the two influenced the development and movement of juvenile possums, suggesting that at least some sex-related differences in natal dispersal may be influenced by the mother rather than simply being the innate behavior of offspring. Abstract Arboreal mice of the genus Habromys (Cricetidae, Neotominae) comprise a clade of seven monotypic and endangered species that inhabit Mesoamerican cloud forests, one of the most threatened of the world's ecosystems. Previous genetic analyses have suggested that closely related lineages are poorly differentiated, which is probably an evolutionary consequence of distributional shifts driven by Quaternary climate oscillations through a complex topography. Here, we assess the potential role of distributional shifts through time on current patterns of genetic differentiation in Habromys. Following recent best-practices recommendations for estimating ecological niches and paleodistributions for montane species, we estimated the potential distribution of the genus across the last glacial-interglacial cycle under three alternative Global Circulation Models to explore the more recent evolutionary history of this genus. Distributional shifts and population connectivity among populations of Habromys were greatly affected by past climate change coupled with topographic habitat heterogeneity. The effectiveness of some barriers to dispersal has changed over time as result of the climatic oscillations. Poorly differentiated genetic lineages might be an evolutionary consequence of intermittent connections and corridors for montane species motivated by glaciations. Some valleys and lowland habitats probably served as previously unrecognized barriers to dispersal during warmer periods. Locomotor diversity has meant many different things depending on the subject area or investigator. While no concrete definition of locomotor diversity is currently available, this has not stopped researchers from making a number of assertions about the underlying mechanisms that determine whether a species will have high or low locomotor diversity. Some of these claims include that: (1) arboreal primates demonstrate higher locomotor diversity than terrestrial species; (2) anatomically generalized and small‐bodied primates demonstrate higher locomotor diversity than anatomically specialized and large‐bodied taxa; and (3) primates demonstrate higher locomotor diversity compared to non‐primate mammals. None of these claims have been tested in any sort of comparative framework. Using previously published locomotor repertoire data from 110 mammalian species, this study co‐opted the Shannon–Wiener diversity index to calculate a singular measure of locomotor diversity. Phylogenetic analyses of these locomotor diversity indices reveal that within primates, small‐bodied species demonstrate greater locomotor diversity than large‐bodied taxa. However, this effect becomes non‐significant when accounting for differences in substrate‐use (i.e. arboreal vs. terrestrial). Anatomical specialization has no effect on locomotor diversity in primates. Furthermore, primates do not inherently have greater locomotor diversity than other mammalian taxa. Findings from this study suggest that movement on arboreal substrates requires all mammals, regardless of taxonomic affiliation, to demonstrate high locomotor diversity. Un outillage végétal existait-il dans les forêts tropicales durant la Préhistoire ? Si oui, quel fut son impact sur la technologie lithique ? En Asie du Sud-Est et en Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée, la « simplicité » des industries lithiques a été interprétée comme le reflet d'un investissement technique dans un autre matériau : le bambou. Les indices matériels, dont les traces d'usure et de résidus sur les artéfacts lithiques, montrent que si une culture matérielle périssable existait bien, aux Philippines et en Nouvelle-Guinée, l'Hypothèse Bambou doit être nuancée et élargie au monde végétal au sens large. Des plantes variées ont été exploitées, notamment le palmier, pour réaliser des activités qui vont au-delà de la fabrication de couteaux et de flèches de bambou : fendage de plantes rigides, travail des fibres, fabrication de cordes ou de paniers. Sur tous les continents, si la relation à la forêt est privilégiée et combine connaissances botaniques, anthropisation du paysage et chasse d'animaux arboricoles, son impact sur l'outillage varie. En Amérique du Sud, les outils en pierre se raréfient en milieu forestier et les chaînes opératoires se simplifient. Did a toolkit made of plants exist in tropical forests during prehistory? If so, what was its impact on lithic technology? In Southeast Asia and Papua New Guinea, the "simplicity" of lithic industries has been interpreted as the reflection of a technical investment in another material: bamboo. The material clues, including traces of wear and residues on lithic artefacts, show that if a perishable material culture did exist, in the Philippines and in New Guinea, the Bamboo Hypothesis must be nuanced and extended to the plant world in the broad sense. Various plants have been exploited, including palm, to carry out activities that go beyond the manufacture of bamboo knives and arrows: splitting of rigid plants, fibre processing, manufacturing of ropes or baskets. If the relationship with the forest is developed on all continents and combines botanical knowledge, anthropogenization of the landscape and hunting of arboreal animals, its impact on lithics toolkits varies. In South America, stone tools become rarer in forest environment and the operating sequences become simpler. On the contrary, lithic industries of Africa and Sri Lanka show great technical know-how and are characterized by great standardization. Living in the rainforest does not necessarily imply abandoning the mineral to focus on plants and the part of cultural choices was large. A prehistoric plant technology is increasingly attested in Southeast Asia and Papua New Guinea thanks to use-wear analyses but remains to be demonstrated in other tropical regions of the world. Ant-plant interactions are diverse and abundant and include classic models in the study of mutualism and other biotic interactions. By estimating a time-scaled phylogeny of more than 1,700 ant species and a time-scaled phylogeny of more than 10,000 plant genera, we infer when and how interactions between ants and plants evolved and assess their macroevolutionary consequences. We estimate that ant-plant interactions originated in the Mesozoic, when predatory, ground-inhabiting ants first began foraging arboreally. This served as an evolutionary precursor to the use of plant-derived food sources, a dietary transition that likely preceded the evolution of extrafloral nectaries and elaiosomes. Transitions to a strict, plant-derived diet occurred in the Cenozoic, and optimal models of shifts between strict predation and herbivory include omnivory as an intermediate step. Arboreal nesting largely evolved from arboreally foraging lineages relying on a partially or entirely plant-based diet, and was initiated in the Mesozoic, preceding the evolution of domatia. Previous work has suggested enhanced diversification in plants with specialized ant-associated traits, but it appears that for ants, living and feeding on plants does not affect ant diversification. Together, the evidence suggests that ants and plants increasingly relied on one another and incrementally evolved more intricate associations with different macroevolutionary consequences as angiosperms increased their ecological dominance. Abstract Vocal communication plays an important role in the mating behaviour of arboreal squirrels. Callosciurus is a genus of tree squirrels that includes 15 species distributed in Southeast Asia, and congeneric species often inhabit the same forest. As closely related species of Callosciurus have the potential to interbreed, species recognition from mating calls may be a fundamental reproductive barrier. We compared seven acoustic characteristics of male mating calls in six Callosciurus species and estimated whether the species differences were clear enough to function as a cue. Discriminant function analyses (DFA) classified 87.4% of mating calls to the correct species. All of the calls by C. notatus , C. nigrovittatus and C. caniceps , and 88% of the calls by C. prevostii , were assigned to the correct species, while the percentage of correct classifications was lower in C. finlaysonii (71%) and C. erythraeus (63%). We compared these results with the genetic relationships to determine whether interspecific acoustic differences are caused by adaptive selection (habitat selection and body size) or by a stochastic process (drift). The genetic relationships among the six species were coincident with the differences in mating calls, which supports the stochastic divergence. Species-specific mating calls may be a useful cue for species recognition in Callosciurus , and thus these calls could be an effective trait for phylogenetic analysis in Callosciurus. The arboreal environment is complex and irregular and imposes significant constraints on the locomotor ability of vertebrates, resulting in morphological adaptations. Carnivorans are of particular interest because they radiated several times independently into the arboreal milieu, leading to convergence in long bone anatomy. We investigated whether the forelimb muscles show differences in arboreal vs. terrestrial species and tested for convergence in muscle architecture. To do so, we studied the forelimb muscles in 17 species of carnivorans with different locomotor modes (arboreal and terrestrial). Our results showed that the forelimb musculature evolved in a convergent manner in arboreal species, resulting in more forceful and heavier wrist rotators and elbow flexors, even when accounting for phylogeny. This suggests that selective forces imposed by the environment drive the evolution of the muscular system towards a convergent phenotype that provides a functional advantage for locomotion in the complex three-dimensional arboreal habitat. Most altricial birds remove their nestlings’ feces from the nest, but the evolutionary forces driving this behavior are poorly understood. A possible adaptive explanation for this could be that birds avoid the attraction of nest predators to their nests due to the visual or olfactory cues produced by feces (nest predation hypothesis). This hypothesis has received contrasting support indicating that additional experimental studies are needed, particularly with respect to the visual component of fecal sacs. To test this hypothesis, we conducted an experiment manipulating the presence of fecal sacs on inactive Woodlark (Lullula arborea) nests. This ground nester has highly cryptic nests that are mainly depredated by visually oriented nest predators (i.e., corvids) in our study population, making it an excellent system to test for the nest predation hypothesis. Our results showed that the presence of fecal sacs in the nest does not seem to be an important factor explaining nest predation. Interestingly, the effect of nest concealment, the most important factor explaining nest predation in Woodlark nests, depended on whether the nest was depredated the previous year or not, supporting the importance of using different nesting sites between years. Our findings indicate that this important nest sanitation behavior is not likely motivated by nest predation and highlight the need to explore alternative selective pressures in this context. Based on molecular and morphological phylogenetic analyses a new genus of Theraphosidae is described, Pseudoclamoris gen. n. Tapinauchenius gigas and Tapinauchenius elenae are transferred to Pseudoclamoris and a new species of Pseudoclamoris from the Amazon Region is described: P. burgessi sp. n. Two new species of Tapinauchenius from the Caribbean are described: T. rasti sp. n. and T. polybotes sp. n. Tapinauchenius subcaeruleus is considered a nomen dubium. Psalmopoeinae subfamily is diagnosed based on molecular and morphological phylogenies, and Pseudoclamoris gen. n. and Ephebopus Simon, 1892 are included. A taxonomic key for Psalmopoeinae genera Tapinauchenius, Pseudoclamoris, Psalmopoeus, and Ephebopus is provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Arboreal lifestyles represent common and major habitat shifts among snakes. Major habitat shifts are often facilitated by particular traits that confer advantages in the new environment. Although studies have examined the habits and characteristics of arboreal snakes at the level of individual species or small clades, a broad survey has never been performed across all snakes. We surveyed the literature to identify all known arboreal snakes and summarize their general characteristics. We then tested for associations between diversification rates and arboreal habits and reconstructed ancestral states using the hidden state speciation and extinction (HiSSE) approach. Finally, we tested for an association between body size and arboreality by fitting multi-peak Ornstein–Uhlenbeck models. We expected that transitions to an arboreal lifestyle might open new ecological opportunities, leading to increased diversification rates, and that different selective pressures for arboreal snakes might lead to changes in body size evolution. We found that generally, arboreal snakes are most frequently nocturnal, oviparous, reptile-eating, brown/banded/patterned snakes inhabiting the Neotropics (assessing each trait individually, not jointly) and that arboreality has no effect on rates of diversification. Ornstein–Uhlenbeck models showed that arboreal snakes tend to be longer than non-arboreal snakes, that rates of body size evolution are generally lower in arboreal snakes, and that arboreal body sizes are pulled more strongly towards their optimum than in non-arboreal snakes. Summary: Nest boxes are commonly installed to support hollow‐using species where the abundance of hollow‐bearing trees is deficient. Recent studies have provided equivocal evidence about the effectiveness of nest box projects and have highlighted significant management costs associated with some projects. We document the functionality of 303 nest boxes installed across five different community‐led projects in southern Australia for periods of 10–25 years. As expected, we found that nest boxes lost functionality over time. However, 60% remained functional to support the Brush‐tailed Phascogale (Phascogale tapoatafa) and the Sugar Glider (Petaurus breviceps) after almost 20 years. Years installed, method of nest box attachment and tree species influenced whether boxes remained functional. Nest box construction material changed over time so could not be assessed specifically. When inspected in a single year, the Brush‐tailed Phascogale occupied 9% of functional boxes and another 48% contained their nests. The Sugar Glider occupied 15% of functional boxes and another 22% contained their nests. These values suggest the nest box installations were highly effective for these species, although more detailed study is needed to understand what contribution these installations have made to support the local populations. Maintenance of most nest boxes occurred twice a year in the first five years after installation, but many received no maintenance for periods of three years, and some 10–15 years, before our census. Our findings suggest that infrequent maintenance by community groups can sustain nest box projects over periods of several decades. Research into employing nest boxes as a management tool in Australia is still in its infancy. Further studies are needed to resolve factors that limit their effectiveness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Despite years of study, it remains unclear if and to what extent the effects of extra‐floral nectaries (EFNs) on arboreal ants observed on individual trees scale up to larger spatial scales. Here, we address this issue in Brazilian savanna and tested three predictions: (i) Trees with EFN have higher richness of arboreal ant species than trees without; (ii) Arboreal ant species richness increases with the proportion of total EFN‐bearing trees at the site scale, due to a higher occurrence of non‐core ant species; (iii) Ant species composition changes with the proportion of EFN‐bearing trees at the site scale. We sampled arboreal ants in 32 plots with EFN‐bearing trees ranging from 0% to 60% of all trees. We sampled 72 ant species, from which 17 (mostly belonging to Camponotus, Cephalotes and Crematogaster) were identified as core species in at least one of the ant‐EFN networks in the 32 plots. Ant species richness was significantly higher on EFN‐bearing trees. We identified 11 ant species that preferentially occurred on EFN‐bearing trees, all of which were core partners in networks. Species richness at the site scales increased with the proportion of EFN‐bearing trees, regardless of tree density and richness; this pattern was due to a higher occurrence of non‐core ant species. Finally, species composition also varied with the proportion of EFN‐bearing trees. Therefore, we found that the presence of EFNs not only influences arboreal ants on individual trees but also has a substantial effect on the ant‐EFN network on a broader community scale. The increase in non‐core species site scale reveals that this interaction is unlikely to result in substantially enhanced protection services for EFN‐bearing plants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
