Sex determination in monomorphic birds is a precondition for captive breeding programs and management and conservation strategies for threatened species. Most species of the order Psittaciformes often present complications since these birds lack external sexual phenotypic traits, making it impossible to differentiate males and females. In the present study, we used molecular techniques to determine the sex of 31 individuals belonging to nine species of the order Psittaciformes kept under human care at the Akumal Monkey Sanctuary & Rescued Animals in Quintana Roo, Mexico. This is a useful and low-cost methodology based on the analysis of the conserved region of the CHD1 gene, which was amplified by PCR with two sets of primers: P8/P2 and 2550F/2718 R. All individuals were successfully sexed with the first set of primers, while only 28 out of 31 samples (90%) could be amplified with the second set. Out of the 31 individuals analyzed, fifteen are female, and seventeen are male. This information represents a handy tool for adequately managing birds under human care, resulting in their reproduction and eventual reintegration into their natural habitat. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this research is to microencapsulate the ARA oil by spray-drying using different wall materials. A systematic investigation was implemented to characterize the effects of microcapsules on the structure, physical and chemical properties, and stability. The ARA microcapsules were used as the core material, where Whey protein (W), Whey ProteinGlucose (WG), and Whey Protein-Glucose Syrup-Lactose (WGL) were used as the wall materials. An analysis was made on the encapsulation efficiency, water content, solubility, bulk density, angle of repose, particle size distribution, micromorphology, oxidation stability, and thermal stability of the microcapsules. The properties of the microcapsules were compared from different wall materials. The results showed that the higher encapsulation efficiency of WGL was 98.64%, indicating a significant difference between W and WG (P＜0.05). The encapsulation efficiency was increased and the embedding effect of microcapsules was good. The WGL was measured to observe a water content of 2.85% and a bulk density of 0.54 g/mL. There was no significant difference among the three kinds of ARA oil microcapsules. Microcapsule powders that are obtained in this research study were very stabile and compressible.The solubility of WGL was higher and the angle of repose of WGL was lower, which were significant differences between W and WG (P＜0.05). The solubility of WGL reached 89.83%, it was increased and the quality of microcapsules was good. The angle of repose of WGL was 35.87°, which angles of repose of WGL were 7.36° and 4.38° lower than those of W and WG. As such, the smaller the angle of repose of the WGL was, the smaller the frictional force, and the better the fluidity was, the larger particle size was, indicating the normal distribution and a narrow region. The physicochemical properties of WGL were superior to W and WG, which was beneficial to the storage stability of microcapsules. The microcapsule product shared the spherical microstructure, free-cracks, free-pores, dense structure, fullness, and complete particle morphology, which basically achieved the intended purpose of embedding. The iodine titration was used to determine the peroxide values of W, WG, and WGL. Specifically, the peroxide values of WGL increased from 2.42 to 19.92 and 32.75 mmol/kg at 25 ℃ and 50 ℃, respectively. The peroxide values of WGL were significantly lower than those of W and WG (P＜0.05), indicating that WGL with higher oxidative stability. The accelerated storage test of the ARA oil after embedding showed that the WGL improved the oxidative stability of ARA oil. The wall material of WGL was better than those of W and WG for embedding ARA oil, which hindered the influence of external conditions on ARA oil and isolated oxygen, thus slowing down the oxidation rate. The reason was the dense and void-free structure of the WGL. Therefore, the oxidative deterioration of ARA oil microcapsules was effectively delayed during storage and prolonged the shelf life. The maximum melting temperature and mass retention rate of WGL were 107 ℃ and 27.55 %, respectively, according to the differential scanning calorimetry and thermal gravity analysis. The WGL shared better thermal stability than W and WG. Therefore, there were higher temperatures and energy required for the phase transition of the WGL, indicating better thermal stability. The WGL can be expected to store the stability of microcapsules at room temperature. In conclusion, the properties of WGL are better than those of W and WG, indicating a better embedding and protective effect on ARA microcapsules. A 12-week feeding trial examined the dietary impact of replacing fishmeal (FM) with algal biomass (AB) derived from Pavlova sp. strain CCMP459 (Pav459) in Atlantic salmon diets. Three distinct diets were formulated: a control diet featuring 20% FM and 7% fish oil (FO), an experimental diet incorporating a 50:50 blend of FM and AB Pav459 and reduced FO (10% FM; 4.5% FO; 10% AB), and a second experimental diet with full replacement of FM with AB Pav459 and further reduction in FO (1.75% FO; 20% AB). Replacing FM with AB Pav459 showed no significant effects on the growth performance of Atlantic salmon. Fish across all diets exhibited growth exceeding 200% from their initial weight. Analysis of total lipid content after the 12-week trial revealed no significant differences among the diets. However, individual proportions of omega-3 (ω3) and omega-6 (ω6) fatty acids varied. Fatty acid profiling in muscle and liver tissues showed distinct compositions reflective of dietary treatments. Linoleic acid (LA) and α-linolenic acid (ALA) exhibited higher proportions in total fatty acids than in membrane lipids. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) emerged as the predominant fatty acid in the membranes of both liver and muscle tissues. Furthermore, an analysis of sterol composition in Pavlova and salmon muscle tissue showed the presence of important sterols, including conventionally animal-associated cholesterol. This emphasizes the suitability of microorganisms, such as Pav459, for synthesizing diverse nutrients. Stable isotope analysis demonstrated direct incorporation of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and DHA from diets into salmon tissues. Notably, minimal biosynthesis from the precursor ALA was observed, reaffirming the utility of Pav459-derived fatty acids. The EPA+DHA proportions in the fillet consistently met daily human consumption requirements across all dietary conditions, supporting the use of Pav459 algal biomass as an alternative to FM. Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) are critical for reproduction and thermal adaptation. Year-round variability in the expression of fads2 (fatty acid desaturase 2) in the liver of European perch (Perca fluviatilis) in a boreal lake was tested in relation to individual variation in size, sex, and maturity, together with stable isotopes values as well as fatty acids (FA) content in different tissues and prey items. ARA and DHA primary production was restricted to the summer months, however, perch required larger amounts of these PUFA during winter, as their ARA and DHA muscle content was higher compared to summer. The expression of fads2 in perch liver increased during winter and was higher in mature females. Mature females stored DHA in their gonads already in late summer and autumn, long before the upcoming spring spawning period in May. Lower δ13CDHA values in the gonads in September suggest that these females actively synthesized DHA as part of this reproductive investment. Lower δ13CARA values in the liver of all individuals during winter suggest that perch were synthesizing essential FA to help cope with over-wintering conditions. Perch seem able to modulate its biosynthesis of physiologically required PUFA in situations of stress (fasting or cold temperatures) or in situations of high energetic demand (gonadal development). This contribution discusses two relief depictions, which follow the works of the Greek master Lysippus. One of the partially preserved reliefs, depicting a youth in motion, characterised by the lock of hair on the front has been in the hitherto literature differently interpreted; Josip Korošec explained it as Kairos. The depictions of that deity share the lock of hair above the front, nakedness, posture, and scales, attached to the cords of the scales, which could also be held by the Poetovian youth. Regarding the other stone relief, the direction of the movement is quite unusual and can be taken after gem depictions, which could (also due to some alterations in arm posture and lower quality) serve as the direct source. In the lateral side of the ara (either votive or funerary) Hercules, who follows the type of Weary Hercules, ascribed to Lysippus is depicted. The latter is (in contrast to the rarely imitated Kairos) one of the most widespread types in the Imperial era. The depictions of opera nobilia in Poetovian relief sculpture doubtless attest to the fact that the cultivated inhabitants were aware of and commissioned representations of the well-known works of Greek statuary.

In recent years, large-scale wind and flood disasters have continued to occur in the Japanese archipelago, and there is concern about flooding and other damage even in urban areas. Although municipalities have prepared flood hazard maps, it has been suggested that they are difficult to read. In this study, we developed a teaching material that displays urban topographic maps and flood hazard maps in 3DCG format on tablets and the Internet. Furthermore, using the developed teaching materials, we conducted a class practice for junior high school students. The results of the classroom practice showed that the use of 3D topographic maps displayed in 3DCG significantly improved the students' accuracy rate in predicting flooding compared to that of flat topographic maps. In addition, the students' evaluation of the teaching materials suggested that by using the 3DCG hazard map, they were able to notice the danger of inundation in depressions on a plateau, which they had not noticed on the 3D topographic map. A 16-week feeding trial was conducted to investigate effects of replacing dietary fish oil (FO) with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)-rich microbial oil (MO) from Schizochytrium sp. (T18) on membrane lipid composition of Atlantic salmon parr liver and muscle tissues. Four nutritionally balanced diets were formulated with varying levels of FO, MO, and canola oil (CO), including a control diet with 20% FO, a secondary control diet with 10% FO and 10% CO, and two experimental diets that completely replaced FO with a low (5%) and high (10%) proportion of MO. No significant differences were observed in growth parameters (81–98 g; weight gain), total lipid class composition, and total sterol content among the dietary treatments. However, there were significant differences in the proportions of individual ꞷ3 and ꞷ6 fatty acids in both liver and muscle tissues, reflecting the different dietary treatments. Notably, the presence of low eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) in the MO diets did not affect the growth performance of the fish, suggesting a lower requirement for EPA in the diet and a greater necessity for DHA. The results also showed that DHA was present in very high proportions in the cellular membrane, particularly in muscle tissue, with low levels of linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid. Overall, the findings suggest that MO derived from Schizochytrium sp. (T18) could be a potential substitute for FO in the diet of farmed Atlantic salmon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This is a proposal to add 39 Arabic Quranic characters to the international character encoding standard Unicode. The characters are used to represent text in minority orthographies, and many were contained in earlier documents submitted by others (cited on page 1 of this proposal).The characters are scheduled to be published in Unicode Standard version 14.0 in September 2021. A few modifications have been made to the names or location of characters in Unicode, so users should check the code charts when the Unicode Standard is published. CVD and associated metabolic diseases are linked to chronic inflammation, which can be modified by diet. The objective of the present study was to determine whether there is a difference in inflammatory markers, blood metabolic and lipid panels and lymphocyte gene expression in response to a high-fat dairy food challenge with or without milk fat globule membrane (MFGM). Participants consumed a dairy product-based meal containing whipping cream (WC) high in saturated fat with or without the addition of MFGM, following a 12 h fasting blood draw. Inflammatory markers including IL-6 and C-reactive protein, lipid and metabolic panels and lymphocyte gene expression fold changes were measured using multiplex assays, clinical laboratory services and TaqMan real-time RT-PCR, respectively. Fold changes in gene expression were determined using the Pfaffl method. Response variables were converted into incremental AUC, tested for differences, and corrected for multiple comparisons. The postprandial insulin response was significantly lower following the meal containing MFGM (P < 0·01). The gene encoding soluble epoxide hydrolase (EPHX2) was shown to be more up-regulated in the absence of MFGM (P = 0·009). Secondary analyses showed that participants with higher baseline cholesterol:HDL-cholesterol ratio (Chol:HDL) had a greater reduction in gene expression of cluster of differentiation 14 (CD14) and lymphotoxin β receptor (LTBR) with the WC+MFGM meal. The protein and lipid composition of MFGM is thought to be anti-inflammatory. These exploratory analyses suggest that addition of MFGM to a high-saturated fat meal modifies postprandial insulin response and offers a protective role for those individuals with higher baseline Chol:HDL.

Psittacidae is one of the most endangered families of birds in the world. Knowledge of their nutrition is important for understanding their survival and productivity in the wild, as well as for their adequate husbandry under human care. Hand‐rearing is a common practice for psittacines, however research on their nutrition is limited. We analysed the predicted metabolisable energy, crude protein, crude fat, minerals and the essential amino acid profiles of the crop contents from free‐living nestlings of scarlet macaws (Ara macao) and red‐and‐green macaws (Ara chloropterus) from southeastern Peru, Cuban Amazons (Amazona leucocephala bahamensis) from the Bahamas, lilac‐crowned Amazons (Amazona finschi) from northwestern Mexico and thick‐billed parrots (Rhynchopsitta pachyrhyncha) from northern Mexico. The crop content of the different parrot species displayed remarkably similar nutritional profiles, considering their diversity in habitats, geographic ranges and food sources. The crude protein and crude fat concentrations in crop samples were particularly similar for the Ara and Amazona species, while the thick‐billed parrot stood out for its higher crude fat and lower crude protein content. Wider variations were found among the concentrations of sodium (Na) and iron (Fe), proline and tryptophan. Compared with the requirements of 6−12 weeks leghorn chickens, all free‐ranging parrot diets contained lower crude protein, calcium (Ca), potassium (P) and Na concentrations. The hand‐feeding formulas contained lower crude fat, magnesium (Mg), arginine, valine and phenylalanine concentrations, as well as much higher levels of Ca and zinc (Zn), in comparison with parrot crop samples. Our data suggest that a single formulation could be used to hand‐rear Ara and Amazona sp. of 3 weeks of age and older, while a different formulation would likely be more appropriated for Rhynchopsitta sp. Experimental studies should evaluate if increasing the concentration of crude fat, Mg, arginine, valine and phenylalanine enhances psittacine chick growth and health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As an important aquaculture species, improving the immunity of cultured Apostichopus japonicus (A. japonicus) is vital for its health in aquaculture farming. It has been shown that ARA is an important metabolite for A. japonicus infected by Vibrio splendidus. In this study, we aimed to determine the effects of dietary exogenous ARA on healthy sea cucumber cultures, including assessments of immunity, growth, and fatty acid content. Five experimental diets containing 0.01%, 0.29%, 0.46%, 0.70%, and 1.09% ARA were tested. The specific growth rate (SGR) of sea cucumbers did not be significantly affected by exogenous ARA diet groups. The results showed that dietary ARA between 0.49 and 1.09% notably improved the survival rate of sea cucumbers infected by Vibrio splendidus compared with the control group without exogenous ARA. The results also showed the effects of dietary ARA on immune-related genes, enzymes, and oxidation indices; most of the exogenous ARA significantly upregulated the mRNA expression of the genes NFκB, TLR, TLR3, TRAF6, Toll, and MyD88. The activities of ACP, AKP, and lysozyme increased in the 0.49–1.09% ARA groups, especially the dietary 0.49% ARA group. The SOD1 and NOS activities were enhanced by dietary ARA between 0.29 and 0.70%. Compared with the control, the MDA content increased, but the 0.49% ARA-diet group had a lower MDA content. Based on these data, 0.49–0.70% ARA significantly enhanced immunity in cultured A. japonicus. Exogenous 0.49% and 0.70% ARA also elevated the ARA, total PUFA and n-6 PUFA in the body walls. In conclusion, the appropriate exogenous ARA (0.49%–0.70%) in diets could improve immunity and fatty acid content considerably. ObjectiveTo evaluate changes in blood long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (LCPUFA) and oxylipin concentrations in very preterm infants from birth to 36 weeks’ postmenstrual age (WPA) after providing an emulsified arachidonic acid (ARA):docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) supplement at two different concentrations.Study designThis prospective, randomized trial assigned infants to receive a supplement (1) 80:40 group (80 mg/kg/day ARA and 40 mg/kg/day DHA, n = 9) or (2) 120:60 group (120 mg/kg/day ARA and 60 mg/kg/day DHA, n = 9). Infants received supplement daily from birth until 36 WPA. At baseline, 21 days of life and 36 WPA, the LCPUFAs were measured in plasma by gas chromatography/mass spectrophotometry. Additionally, LCPUFAs and oxylipins were analyzed in whole blood by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Furthermore, a sample of oral mucosa was obtained to analyze single-nucleotide polymorphism located in the FADS1 gene by PCR.ResultsGestational age was similar between groups (80:40 = 28+6 [27+3; 30+3] completed weeks+days; 120:60 = 29+6 [27+3; 30+5] completed weeks+days, p = 0.83). At 36 WPA, the change in plasma ARA was significantly different between groups (80:40 group = 0.15 [−0.67; 0.69] %nmol, 120:60 = 1.68 [1.38; 3.16] %nmol, p = 0.031). In whole blood, the levels of ARA-derived oxylipins (5-, 8-, 9-, 11-, 15-HETE and 8,9-EET) and EPA-derived oxylipins (18-HEPE) significantly increase from baseline to 36 WPA in the 120:60 group than the 80:40 group.ConclusionSupplementation at high doses (120:60 mg/kg/day) increased levels of ARA, and EPA- and ARA-derived oxylipins compared to low doses (80:40 mg/kg/day). Differences were detected in EPA metabolites without a significant increase in plasma DHA.

The objective of this study is to identify the environment for business interactions in virtual reality in the value co-production and co-creation process and to understand how such an environment enables the sustainable development of co-creational activities. This paper takes the concepts of value co-production and co-creation and presence and the Actors, Resources, and Activities Model as conceptual references for the exploration of interactions in virtual reality. Using ten in-depth interviews with senior managers, this paper takes an exploratory case analysis perspective. Results show how the sense of presence—level of immersion to which a medium that produces seemingly accurate representations of objects, events, and people, can submerge the perceptual system of a user—is the primary technical resource enabling the performance of value co-production and co-creational activities inside VR simulations. Additionally, the VR consultants and the hiring firms become the actors, organizing the value-co-production and co-creation practices; those customers and employees are the actors performing five co-creational activities that can result in valuable outcomes for the VR consultants and the hiring firms. Virtual reality is one of the newest vehicles used for the co-production and co-creation of value, for innovating existing products, for sustainable creation of new marketing offerings, or for managing network relations. This study contributes to existent literature by showing the process and practice of value co-production and value co-creation taking place in virtual reality simulations in B2B settings. Intimal hyperplasia (IH) is an innegligible issue for patients undergoing interventional therapy. The proliferation and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) induced by platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PDGF-BB) are critical events in the development of IH. While the exact mechanism and effective target for IH needs further investigation. Metabolic disorders of arachidonic acid (ARA) are involved in the occurrence and progression of various diseases. In this study, we found that the expressions of soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) were significantly increased in the VSMCs during balloon injury-induced IH. Then, we employed a COX-2/sEH dual inhibitor PTUPB to increase the concentration of epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs) while prevent the release of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins. Results showed that PTUPB treatment significantly reduced neointimal thickening induced by balloon injury in rats in vivo and inhibited PDGF-BB-induced proliferation and migration of VSMCs in vitro. Our results showed that PTUPB may reverse the phenotypic transition of VSMCs by inhibiting Pttg1 expression. In conclusion, we found that the dysfunction of ARA metabolism in VSMCs contributes to IH, and the COX-2/sEH dual inhibitor PTUPB attenuates IH progression by reversing the phenotypic switch in VSMC through the Sirt1/Pttg1 pathway. Fatty acid (FA) content and composition of zooplankton in Puget Sound, Washington (USA) was studied to investigate the nutritional quality of diverse zooplankton prey for juvenile salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) in terms of their essential fatty acid (EFA) content. The study focus was on eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and arachidonic acid (ARA) as these are key FA needed to maintain growth and development of juvenile fish. The different zooplankton taxa varied in their FA composition. Much of the variation in FA composition was driven by 18:1ω9 (a biomarker of carnivory), ARA, DHA, and FA characteristic of diatoms, which are linked to zooplankton diet sources. Gammarid and hyperiid amphipods contained the highest amount of EFA, particularly the gammarid amphipod Cyphocaris challengeri, while shrimp and copepods had much lower EFA content. Crab larvae, which are important prey for juvenile salmon in Puget Sound, had intermediate EPA + DHA content and the lowest DHA/EPA ratio, and were rich in diatom biomarkers. Temporal and spatial trends in zooplankton lipids were less apparent than the taxonomic differences, although the EFA content increased from spring to summer in Cancridae zoeae and the amphipod C. challengeri. These results on taxon-specific EFA content provide baseline information on the nutritional quality of zooplankton that can be applied in food web models. Combining zooplankton fatty acid data (quality) with taxon-specific zooplankton biomass data (quantity) enables development of new, sensitive indicators of juvenile fish production to help assess recent declines in salmon production in the Pacific Northwest and predict future adult returns. Se comentan nuevos registros de aves de Cuba, como el guacamayo cubano (Ara tricolor), hallado en dos sitios arqueológicos de La Habana Vieja, de los siglos XVII y XVIII, asimismo, el búho de Arredondo (Pulsatrix arredondoi), ave extinta en tiempos prehistóricos, cuyos restos hemos colectado en dos cuevas de la comunidad Las Charcas, municipio San José de las Lajas, provincia Mayabeque, y por último, el carpintero real (Campephilus principalis), colectado en la Cueva del Aguacate, sitio localizado también en la comunidad Las Charcas. El resto óseo de P. arredondoi colectado en la Cueva de Las Charcas procede de un contexto paleontológico. En cambio, el otro resto proviene de la Cueva de los Muertos, que es un sitio arqueológico de aborígenes arcaicos, también conocidos como apropiadores mesolíticos. Por vez primera se considera la posibilidad de que P. arredondoi formara parte de la dieta de los aborígenes precolombinos citados. El registro de C. principalis representa el primer hallazgo de esta especie en contextos paleontológicos de Cuba. Purpose: Fatty acid (FA) abnormalities are found in various inflammatory disorders and have been related to disturbed gut microbiota. Patients with common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) have inflammatory complications associated with altered gut microbial composition. We hypothesized that there is an altered FA profile in CVID patients, related to gut microbial dysbiosis. Methods: Plasma FAs were measured in 39 CVID patients and 30 healthy controls. Gut microbial profile, a food frequency questionnaire, and the effect of the oral antibiotic rifaximin were investigated in CVID patients. Results: The n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) (1.4 [1.0–1.8] vs. 1.9 [1.2–2.5], median (IQR), P < 0.05), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (3.2 [2.4–3.9] vs. 3.5 [2.9–4.3], P < 0.05), all values expressed as weight percent of total plasma FAs, were reduced in CVID compared to controls. Also, n-6 PUFAs (34.3 ± 3.4 vs. 37.1 ± 2.8, mean ± SD, P < 0.001) and linoleic acid (LA) (24.5 ± 3.3 vs. 28.1 ± 2.7, P < 0.0001) and the FA anti-inflammatory index (98.9 [82.1–119.4] vs. 117.0 [88.7–153.1], median (IQR), P < 0.05) were reduced in CVID. The microbial alpha diversity was positively associated with plasma n-6 PUFAs (r = 0.41, P < 0.001) and LA (r = 0.51, P < 0.001), but not n-3 PUFAs (P = 0.78). Moreover, a 2-week course of rifaximin significantly reduced the proportion of n-6 PUFAs (P = 0.04, UNIANOVA). Serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels correlated with plasma n-3 PUFAs (rho = 0.36, P = 0.03) and DHA (rho = 0.41, P = 0.009). Conclusion: We found a potentially unfavorable FA profile in CVID, related to low IgG levels. High plasma n-6 PUFAs were related to increased gut microbial diversity and altered by rifaximin therapy. This study evaluated how estuary of origin and ontogenetic stage influence the fatty acid (FA) composition in the tissues of wild European sea bass juvenile. We evidenced tissue-specific patterns, with the brain exhibiting a distinct FA composition from the liver and muscle. Ontogenetic stage and estuary influenced the general FA profile, and particularly the essential FA (EFA) like docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and arachidonic acid (ARA) in all tissues. The data also revealed the ability of wild sea bass to modulate, at the molecular level, FA biosynthesis pathways and suggest a potential dietary DHA limitation in the natural environment. The distribution of FA within tissues might reflect shifts in diet, metabolic demands, or adaptations to environmental conditions. Lipids, particularly fatty acids (FAs), are major sources of energy and nutrients in aquatic ecosystems and play key roles during vertebrate development. The European eel Anguilla anguilla goes through major biochemical and physiological changes throughout its lifecycle as it inhabits sea‐ (SW), and/or brackish‐ (BW) and/or freshwater (FW) habitats. With the ultimate goal being to understand the reasons for eels adopting a certain life history strategy (FW or SW residency vs. 'habitat shifting'), we explored differences in lipid content and FA composition of muscle, liver and eyes from eels collected across Norwegian SW, BW and FW habitats, and at different lifecycle stages (yellow to silver). FW and SW eels had a higher lipid content overall compared to BW eels, reflecting differences in food availability and life history strategies. SW eels had higher proportions of certain monounsaturated FAs (MUFAs; 18:1n‐9, 20:1n‐9), and of the essential polyunsaturated FAs 20:5n‐3 (eicosapentaenoic acid, EPA) and 22:6n‐3 (docosahexaenoic acid) than FW eels, reflecting a marine‐based diet. In contrast, the muscle of FW eels had higher proportions of 18:3n‐3, 18:2n‐6 and 20:4n‐6 (arachidonic acid), as is typical of FW organisms. MUFA proportions increased in later stage eels, consistent with the hypothesis that the eels accumulate energy stores prior to migration. In addition, the decrease of EPA with advancing stage may be associated with the critical role that this FA plays in eel sexual development. Introduction: Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs) are critical for infant growth and development, particularly arachidonic acid (ARA, C20:4n-6) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, C22:6n-3). ARA and DHA are components of cell membrane phospholipids and play an important role in cell division, differentiation, and signaling; and DHA is the n-3 fatty acid predominant in the developing brain and retina. During the third trimester of pregnancy, LC-PUFAs increase substantially in fetal circulation, and a "biomagnification" process in the fetal brain is observed. Moreover, LC-PUFAs are precursors of eicosanoids and metabolites, which modulate the intensity and duration of the immune response. LC-PUFA synthesis implies complex desaturation and elongation processes on their principal precursors, linoleic acid (LA) (18:3 n-6) (series n-6) and α-linolenic acid (LNA) (20:3 n-3) (series n-3), where fatty acid desaturases (FADS) and elongases (ELOVL) are competing. It is important to notice that during the first months of life, as a consequence of low enzymatic activity, LC-PUFA synthesis from LA and LNA is reduced, especially in those infants carrying variations in the FADS and ELOVL genes, which are involved in LC-PUFA synthesis, and so they are unable to supply their own DHA and ARA needs. Homozygote infants for FADS haplotype A (97 % of the Latinoamerican population) show low levels of ARA (only 43 %) and DHA (only 24 %) when compared to those carrying haplotype D (more prevalent in Europe, Africa and Asia). Human milk is the only source of LA, LNA, ARA, and DHA for the neonate and infant till complementary feeding (CF) is introduced. Infants fed with infant formulas must receive enough amounts of LA, LNA, ARA, and DHA to cover their nutritional requirements. The new guidelines by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) (2016) recommend that infant formulas and follow-on formulas must contain 20-50 mg of DHA/100 kcal (0.5-1 % of total fatty acids, which is higher than in human milk and the majority of infant formulas in the market), and it is not necessary to add ARA. This new regulation, which is already applicable since February 2020, has resulted in profound controversy because there is no scientific evidence about its appropriateness and safety for healthy children. Then, different international expert groups have revised the research already published about the effects of ARA and DHA addition to infant formulas, and discussed different emerging questions from this European directive. The expert group led from the University of Granada (Spain) recommends the addition of ARA in similar or higher concentrations than those of DHA, at least equal to those present in human milk (0.3 % of total fatty acids), although preferably 0.5 % and up to around 0.64 % of total fatty acids, since new studies confirm the optimal intake of ARA and DHA during the different developmental stages. Purpose: To detect circulating retina-specific autoreactive CD4+ T-cells and antiretinal antibodies (ARA) in latent tuberculosis (TB)-associated uveitis or sarcoid uveitis patients.Methods: The presence of crude retinal extract (RE) autoreactive CD4+ T-cells was determined by a highly sensitive flowcytometric-based technique examining co-expression of CD25 and CD134 (OX40) on RE stimulated PBMC. The presence of ARA in available matched serum samples was assessed by indirect immunofluorescence.Results: No autoreactive CD4+ T-cells against RE could be detected in either latent TB-associated uveitis or sarcoid uveitis patients, while ARA were detected in the serum of the majority (5/6) of latent TB-associated uveitis and all (3/3) sarcoid uveitis patients.Conclusion: Even with the use of this highly sensitive flowcytometric technique circulating retina-specific autoreactive CD4+ T-cells could not be detected. This study conducted a comprehensive literature review, including 112 relevant Chinese and English articles, to summarize and analyze the global levels of ARA, DHA, and the ARA/DHA ratio in breast milk. The data were correlated with local aquatic products intake and children's IQ. The results indicated that the average level of DHA in breast milk across regions is lower than that of ARA. Variations in DHA content were identified as a primary factor influencing ARA/DHA ratio fluctuations. Breast milk ARA and DHA levels decrease with prolonged lactation periods but increase over the past 22 years. Correlation analysis revealed a significant positive relationship between aquatic products intake and breast milk DHA levels (r = 0.64, p < 0.05). Breast milk DHA levels also showed a significant positive correlation with children's IQ (r = 0.67, p < 0.01). Stable breast milk ARA content did not exhibit significant correlations with aquatic products intake or children's IQ (r = 0, p > 0.05). Among 22 infant formula products available in China, only 5 had ARA levels within the range of breast milk. Most formula products had higher ARA levels than DHA, resulting in ARA/DHA ratios generally exceeding 1. The temporal and spatial variability in breast milk ARA and DHA levels may lead to diverse health outcomes in infants. Therefore, the addition of ARA and DHA in infant formula should consider this variability, including the molecular forms and positional isomerism of the added ARA and DHA. Additionally, considering the impact of different cognitive development tests and infant's gene expression on formula assessment results, there is a need to establish a more comprehensive infant health assessment system to guide the addition of ARA and DHA in formula. Salinity seriously constrains crop yield in irrigated agriculture throughout the world. Also, salinity is a serious threat to agriculture in arid and semi arid regions. Nearly 10 % of the world's land surface can be classified as endangered by salinity. Salinity in the soil and irrigation water is an environmental problem and a major constraint for crop production. Currently, 20 % of the world's cultivated land is affected by salinity, which results in the loss of 50 % of agricultural yield. At present, there are nearly 954 million hectares of saline soils on the earth's surface. All these salt affected soils are distributed throughout the world. The salinity response of legumes in general varies greatly depending on factors like climatic conditions, soil properties, salt tolerance and the stages of crop growth. Successful cultivation of legumes can be achieved by the selection and/or development of a salt-tolerant legume Rhizobium combination although high salinities are known to affect rhizobial activities. The aim of present study is the effect of strains of salt tolerant Rhizobia on IAA, EPS, nodule ARA activity, Nitrogen content, leghemoglobin content, siderophore production, IAR and salt concentration of Groundnut on coastal area of Cuddalore District of Tamil Nadu. Research on psittacine nutrition is limited, and nestling requirements are poorly understood. This study analysed fatty acid (FA) profiles of crop contents of free‐living scarlet macaws (Ara macao, n = 18), red‐and‐green macaws (Ara chloropterus, n = 5), Cuban parrots (Amazona leucocephala bahamensis, n = 27), lilac‐crowned Amazons (Amazona finschi, n = 33) and thick‐billed parrots (Rhynchopsitta pachyrhyncha, n = 32). The same analysis was carried out on 15 commercial parrot hand‐feeding formulas. The mean FA concentration of the crop samples of each species ranged from 15% to 53% DM for crop samples and ranged from 6% to 22% for hand‐feeding formulas. Long‐chain FA represented over 92% of all FA in the crop samples and over 81% of all FA in the commercial formulas. Parrot species shared similarities in saturation profiles of crop samples, ranging between 13%–29% saturated fatty acids (SFA), 12%–40% monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) and 39%–58% polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). All studied psittacines, except for the red‐and‐green macaw, were within the range of values for hand‐rearing formulas. Palmitic acid was the most common SFA in scarlet macaws, red‐and‐green macaws, Cuban parrot, thick‐billed parrot and in all but one commercial formula. Palmitic and stearic acids dominated the SFA in the samples of the Lilac‐crowned Amazon. Oleic acid was the most common MUFA in all hand‐feeding formulas as well as in the crop samples, except for the lilac‐crowned amazon and the thick‐billed parrot where vaccenic acid dominated. Linoleic acid was by far the most common PUFA found in the crop samples as well as in the hand‐feeding formulas. PUFA were largely dominated by the n6 family, both in the crop samples and the formulas. The data presented on nestling diets of free‐living parrot species provide a foundation for future researchers to test whether increasing FA concentration in hand‐feeding formulas improves nestling development or if species‐specific formulas will be advantageous. Prostanoids and PGE2 in particular have been long viewed as one of the major mediators of inflammation in arthritis. However, experimental data indicate that PGE2 can serve both pro- and anti-inflammatory functions. We have previously shown (Kojima et al., J. Immunol. 180 (2008) 8361-8368) that microsomal prostaglandin E synthase-1 (mPGES-1) deletion, which regulates PGE2 production, resulted in the suppression of collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) in mice. This suppression was attributable, at least in part, to the impaired generation of type II collagen autoantibodies. In order to examine the function of mPGES-1 and PGE2 in a non-autoimmune form of arthritis, we used the collagen antibody-induced arthritis (CAIA) model in mice deficient in mPGES-1, thereby bypassing the engagement of the adaptive immune response in arthritis development. Here we report that mPGES-1 deletion significantly increased CAIA disease severity. The latter was associated with a significant (~3.6) upregulation of neutrophil, but not macrophage, recruitment to the inflamed joints. The lipidomic analysis of the arthritic mouse paws by quantitative liquid chromatography/tandem mass-spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) revealed a dramatic (~59-fold) reduction of PGE2 at the peak of arthritis. Altogether, this study highlights mPGES-1 and its product PGE2 as important negative regulators of neutrophil-mediated inflammation and suggests that specific mPGES-1 inhibitors may have differential effects on different types of inflammation. Furthermore, neutrophil-mediated diseases could be exacerbated by inhibition of mPGES-1.

This article presents a historical case study of three armed organisations that operated in Portugal before and after the April Revolution of 1974. This event put an end to Estado Novo’s authoritarian regime, starting a period of transition to democracy. The armed organisations operating during Estado Novo sought, essentially, to combat the dictatorship and the Colonial War. These organisations channelled their actions towards the destruction of the regime’s repressive and colonial apparatus, but refused to use lethal violence. During the transition to democracy, disillusionment caused by the negative outcome of the revolutionary process and the end of the utopia of the socialist revolution led some sectors of the radical left to return to armed struggle. This time, such actors targeted both property and human beings but were highly selective in their targeting. We analyse the narratives of restraint of former militants from across these groups, and consider how they were shaped by the evolving socio-political context. In the case of the pre-revolution organisations, we found two collectively accepted narratives inscribed in their genesis: lethal violence as counterproductive and lethal violence as philosophically and ideologically problematic. In the case of the post-revolution organisation we found one restraint narrative shared by the collective: indiscriminate lethal violence is counterproductive. Some militants also developed a restraint narrative that centred on disappointment with the organisation for its perceived operational failures. This study is based on a narrative analysis of data dispersed across personal and public archives, writings, and memoirs of individuals directly and indirectly involved in the armed struggle, with data collected through interviews with former politically violent militants. Background: PUFAs play vital roles in the development, maintenance, and functioning of circuitries that regulate reward and social behaviors. Therefore, modulations in PUFA concentrations of these brain regions may disrupt reward and social circuitries contributing to mood disorders, developmental disabilities, and addictions. Though much is known about regional and phospholipid-pool-specific PUFA concentrations, less is known about the effects of dietary interventions that concurrently lowers n-6 PUFA and supplements n-3 PUFA, on brain PUFA concentrations. There is even less knowledge on the effects of sex on brain PUFA concentrations.Objective: This study aimed to comprehensively examine the interaction effects of diet (D), sex (S), brain regions (BR), and phospholipid pools (PL) on brain PUFA concentrations.Methods: Male and female C57BL/6J mice were fed 1 of 4 custom-designed diets varying in linoleic acid (LNA) (8 en% or 1 en%) and eicosapentaenoic acid/docosahexaenoic acid (EPA/DHA) (0.4 en% or 0 en%) concentrations from in utero to 15 weeks old. At 15 weeks old, the prefrontal cortex, dorsal striatum, and cerebellum were collected. Fatty acids of 5 major PL were quantified by GC-flame ionization detection. Repeated measures ANOVA was used to test for differences among the groups for D, S, BR, and PL.Results: No significant 4-way interactions on PUFA concentrations. DHA, predominant n-3 PUFA, concentrations were dependent on significant D × BR × PL interactions. DHA concentration was not affected by sex. Arachidonic acid (ARA; predominant n-6 PUFA) concentrations were not dependent on 3-way interactions. However, significant 2-way D × PL, BR × PL, and D × Sinteractions affected ARA concentrations. Brain fatty acid concentrations were differentially affected by various combinations of D, S, BR, and PL interactions.Conclusion: Though DHA concentrations are not affected by sex, ARA concentrations are affected by interactions of the 4 variables examined. During the development of the central nervous system, oligodendrocytes (OLs) are responsible for myelination, the formation of the myelin sheath around axons. This process enhances neuronal connectivity and supports the maturation of emerging cognitive functions. In humans, recent evidence suggests that early life nutrition may affect myelination. In the present study, we investigated the impact of a blend containing docosahexaenoic acid, arachidonic acid, vitamin B12, vitamin B9, iron and sphingomyelin, or each of these nutrients individually, on oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs) proliferation and maturation into OLs as well as their myelinating properties. By using an in vitro model, developed to study each step of myelination, we found that the nutrient blend increased the number of OPCs and promoted their differentiation and maturation into OLs, as measured by quantifying A2B5 positive cells, myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG) positive cells and area, myelin binding protein (MBP) positive cells and area, respectively. Moreover, measuring myelination by quantifying the overlapping signal between neurofilament and either MAG or MBP revealed a positive effect of the blend on OLs myelinating properties. In contrast, treatment with each individual nutrient resulted in differential effects on the various readouts. Pieces of evidence have shown that a significant proportion of cancer-prone factors are not attributed to alterations in protein-coding sequences. Adriamycin resistance-related (ARA) and natural antisense of ZEB2 (ZEB2NAT) long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been indicated with oncogenic properties by regulating various signaling pathways and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), which may have diagnostic and prognostic potential as a novel group of biomarkers. The current study aimed to evaluate the expression status of ARA and ZEB2NAT lncRNAs and their clinicopathological significance in a population with breast cancer (BC). Total RNA was extracted from 60 tumor samples and their normal adjacent tissues (NATs). The lncRNA expressions were measured using quantitative reverse transcription PCR (RT-qPCR) and statistical analyses were performed by SPSS version 25. Our data showed a significant upregulation of ARA and ZEB2NAT lncRNAs in tumor tissues compared to NATs (p <0.001; p = 0.021, respectively). ARA and ZEB2NAT expression were observed to be significantly associated with tumor grade, nuclear grade, tumor stages, and lymph node metastasis (p <0.05). Additionally, ARA expression was significantly correlated with breastfeeding status (p = 0.027). our data revealed that ARA and ZEB2NAT lncRNAs were overexpressed in BC. Furthermore, the selected lncRNAs were found to might be the potential biomarkers for BC diagnosis and prognosis. Abstract Eight species of macaw (Psittacidae: Anodorhynchus, Ara, Primolius) have previously been reported from Paraguay. We discuss all verifiable reports of the species from Paraguay and provide comment on their statuses. Ara chloropterus and Primolius auricollis are both widespread species known from multiple reports across a wide geographic area. We report minor range extensions within Paraguay for both species. Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus is documented as a breeding resident with a restricted distribution in the Upper Paraguay River basin. The first modern records of Ara ararauna and the first record of Diopsittaca nobilis for the country are documented with photographs. We are unable to find any confirmed records of Anodorhynchus glaucus from Paraguay and thus consider it of possible occurrence. Two species are rejected as erroneously cited, Ara militaris and Ara glaucogularis. Consequently six species in four genera are now confirmed to occur in Paraguay.

Arachidonic acid (ARA), an omega-6 (ω-6) polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA), is involved in the development and maintenance of renal functions, whereas docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an omega-3 (ω-3) PUFA that has anti-inflammatory effects and attenuates nephropathy. However, their effects on the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) remain unknown. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of feeding ARA, DHA, and ARA and DHA-containing diets on rats with 5/6 nephrectomized kidneys. Urine and feces were collected every 4 weeks, and the kidneys were collected at 16 weeks after surgery. Urinary albumin (U-ALB) excretion increased gradually with nephrectomy, but the U-ALB excretion was attenuated by feeding the rats with an ARA + DHA-containing diet. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in the kidneys were lower in the ARA + DHA group than in the other groups. At 4 weeks after surgery, the lipid peroxide (LPO) levels in the plasma of the ARA + DHA groups decreased significantly after surgery compared to the control CKD group, but this did not happen at 16 weeks post-surgery. There was a significant negative correlation between LPO levels in the plasma at 4 weeks and creatinine clearance, and a positive correlation with urinary albumin levels. These results suggest that the combination of ARA and DHA inhibit the progress of early stage CKD.

Background and Aims The tidal flats on which mangrove plants grow tend to have low soil nitrogen contents because nitrogen-containing litter is repeatedly washed offshore by ebb tides. Under such circumstances, it is unclear how mangrove plants acquire the nitrogen required to support their vigorous growth. In the present work, chemical and biological characteristics of diazotrophy around mangrove plant roots were surveyed under natural conditions to elucidate mangrove–diazotroph relationships. Methods Soil nitrogenase activity of a representative mangrove plant, Rhizophora stylosa , which has a broad geographical distribution, was measured using the acetylene reduction assay at forest, tree and prop root scales. In addition, diazotrophic community composition was compared between rhizosphere and bulk soil based on sequencing of nifH genes. Key Results Soil nitrogenase activity was high near prop roots, and this pattern was enhanced as soil live root content increased. At the forest scale, we observed high soil nitrogenase activity (acetylene-reducing activity) inside the forest (the highest value was 90.9 µmol C2H2 min−1 cm−3, average 46.8 ± 18.2 µmol C2H2 min−1 cm−3). Rates decreased sharply from the forest to the tidal flat (range 1.2–22.2 µmol C2H2 min−1 cm−3, average 7.9 ± 4.5 µmol C2H2 min−1 cm−3). The nifH operational taxonomic unit composition differed significantly among forest and tree rhizospheres and the bulk soil (P < 0.0001). Conclusions Our results suggest that the accumulation of diazotrophs around R. stylosa mangrove trees enhances the supply of biologically fixed nitrogen to the mangrove roots. This supply is especially important when the soil naturally contains little nitrogen. This nitrogen acquisition system may be a key process that explains the high productivity of mangrove ecosystems. On the centennial of the Russian Revolution, the article recounts the remarkable experiences of an American eyewitness to the Revolution: historian Frank A. Golder (1877–1929). Golder is best remembered today as the man responsible for amassing the extraordinary Russia and East European collections housed at the Hoover Institution Library & Archives at Stanford University. He was in St. Petersburg in 1914 when Russia entered the Great War; he was in Petrograd in 1917 when the February Revolution brought an end to the Romanov dynasty; he was in Soviet Russia in 1921– 1923 as a famine relief worker, a collector of books, periodicals, and manuscripts, and a political observer of Lenin's government; and he was in the Soviet Union for extended visits in 1925 and 1927, recording the changes in Soviet society after Lenin. Golder kept a detailed diary and was a prolific correspondent and thus left behind extensive documentation of his Russian sojourns. These record his personal efforts to reestablish Russian-American cultural ties suspended during Russia's time of troubles, to serve as a link and a lifeline. The article describes Golder's connections to artists and intellectuals in the Russian capitals and focuses on two cultural institutions: the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Rumiantsev Museum Library (today the Russian State Library) in Moscow.
