The aim of this study was to investigate how female authors of autobiographies from the 2010s experience and describe their own turning points and what has contributed to their recovery from a self-perceived eating disorder in a Swedish context. The method chosen for this study was a qualitative document analysis where four autobiographies have been analyzed. In analyzing our results two theoretical approaches were implemented: symbolic interactionism and emotion sociology. We found that the importance of close individuals has played a central role in the recovery process. However, relatives could also have a negative impact on the individual and contribute to a negative body image. Furthermore, the study shows that professional healthcare contacts played a significant role, both in identifying signs of eating disorders and starting treatment, but also through conversational support. Nonetheless in this study, adequate knowledge among professionals has been found to be an important aspect. Finally, a recurring theme in the study has been the ability to find oneself again and to create a new identity beyond the eating disorder problem.

Internalisation of appearance ideals moderates the relationship between exposure to media images and body dissatisfaction. To date, the role of thin- and muscular-ideal internalisation in the context of social media remains under explored, particularly for boys. As such, we aimed to explore how social media use (Instagram and Snapchat) was related to body dissatisfaction, and whether thin- and muscular-ideal internalisation would moderate this relationship in a sample of 1153 adolescent boys and girls (55.42% males; Mage = 13.71, SD = 1.14). As hypothesised, social media use, and thin- and muscular ideal internalisation were positively correlated with body dissatisfaction in both genders. In moderation analyses, thin-ideal internalisation emerged as the only variable that had a significant effect on body dissatisfaction in both genders. Additionally, the influence of social media use on body dissatisfaction was moderated by muscular-ideal internalisation in boys, whereby for boys with high muscular-ideal internalisation, greater social media use was associated with greater body dissatisfaction. The two-way (muscular x thin-ideal internalisation) and three-way interaction (social media use x thin-ideal internalisation x muscular-ideal internalisation) effects on body dissatisfaction were non-significant. These findings emphasise the importance of considering the sociocultural environment (i.e., new media influences) as frameworks for understanding body dissatisfaction and suggest targeting of internalisation of appearance ideals in body dissatisfaction prevention programs.

Denna studies inledning ger en övergripande bild av att svenska ungdomar generellt skattar sin hälsa som hög, däremot skattas den psykosociala hälsan lägre vilken innefattas av att vara nöjd med sig själv. Att vara nöjd med sig själv och sin kropp omfattas av kroppsbildsuppfattningen. Sociala medier tar allt mer tid i anspråk och används i större utsträckning som ett kommunikationsmedel. Levnadsvanor, miljö och det tidiga livets villkor har en betydelse för individens hälsa. Denna studies syfte var att undersöka ungdomars kroppsbildsuppfattning och användande av sociala medier samt undersöka relationen mellan dem. Metod: En kvantitativ tvärsnittsstudie utfördes. Enkäter användes som datainsamlingsmetod bland skånska elever i åk 1-3 på gymnasiet, där 249 elever besvarade enkäten. Resultatet visade att 33 procent av flickor hade högre kroppsuppfattning än pojkar (14%) och att 38 procent av pojkarna hade lägre kroppsuppfattning än flickorna (18%) (p=0,001). Flickor använder sociala medier i större utsträckning än pojkar. Sättet flickor och pojkar använde sociala medier på skiljde sig åt. Flickor hade fler olika roller på sociala medier än pojkar, samt pojkar spelade mer onlinspel än flickor. Konklusion: Eftersom pojkarna i denna studie hade lägre kroppsbildsuppfattning och spelade mer onlinespel än flickorna är det utifrån ett genus och jämställdhetsperspektiv lämpligt att studera pojkars kroppsbildsuppfattning i relation till onlinespelande. Därför bör ytterligare forskning med inriktning på pojkars kroppsbildsuppfattning bedrivas utifrån både en kvalitativ och kvantitativ metodaspekt, med ändamål att försöka förstå vilka faktorer som ligger till grund för deras kroppsbildsuppfattning., The study's introduction is given as an overall picture of the fact that Swedish youth generally estimate their health as high but the psychosocial health is estimated to be lower, which includes being satisfied with themselves. Being content with yourself and your body is covered by the body image perception. Social media takes more time and it's used to a greater extent as a communication medium. Living habits, the environment and the conditions of early life have a bearing on the individual's health.The aim of this study was to investigate the body image of young people and the use of social media and to investigate the relationship between them. Method: A quantitative cross-sectional study was performed. The survey was used as a data collection method among Scanian students in grades 1-3 in high school, where 249 students answered questionnaires. The result showed that 33 percent of girls had a higher body image than boys (14 percent) and that 38 percent of boys had a lower body image than girls (18 percent) (p = 0.001). The way girls and boys used social media differs. Girls use social media to a greater extent than boys. The way girls and boys used social media differed. Girls had more different roles on social media than boys, and boys played more online games than girls. Conclusion: Since the boys in this study had lower body image perception and played more online games than girls, it is appropriate from a gender and gender perspective to study boys' body image perception in relation to online gaming. Therefore, further research with a focus on boys' body image should be conducted on the basis of both a qualitative and quantitative method aspect, with the aim of trying to understand which factors underlie their body image perception.

Studien byggde på associationen mellan att de som främst använde sociala medier, målgruppen unga kvinnor i åldrarna 16 till 25 år, även var den samhällsgrupp som dominerade i psykisk ohälsa. Forskning kring varför målgruppen lider av psykisk ohälsa mer än andra samhällsgrupper är bristande. Det är samtidigt känt att ungas uppväxtmiljö spelar en betydande roll för deras psykiska hälsa. Sociala medier inkluderas inte som en sådan miljö, trots att unga kvinnor idag spenderar minst 3 timmar där dagligen. Detta motiverade studiens syfte, att undersöka unga kvinnors upplevelser kring sociala medier som uppväxtmiljö i relation till sin identitet och hälsa. Kvalitativ metod möjliggjorde insamling av material genom semistrukturerade intervjuer i fokusgrupper. Studiens resultat fann att unga kvinnor upplever sociala medier som en miljö lika verklighetstrogen som andra fysiskt anknutna uppväxtmiljöer. Studiens resultat redogör även för upplevelser av psykisk ohälsa i samband med sociala medier, men att en hög självkänsla fungerar som en skyddande faktor. Konklusionen redogör för om det finns bestämningsfaktorer för hälsa på sociala medier, bör dessa kunna betraktas som påverkbara förutsatt att de upptäcks och dokumenteras. Därför föreslås framtida hälsoarbete med fokus på säker navigering för unga på sociala medier. Konklusionen påvisar vikten av att folkhälsovetenskapens forskning fortgår i linje med den rådande samhällsutvecklingen som i studien förstås som digitaliserad, detta för att inte missa värdefull kunskap kring vad som leder eller avbryter kurs mot psykisk ohälsa., The study’s background was based on the association between those who mainly used social media, young women between the ages of 16 and 25, were also the group that dominated in mental illness. Current research on why young women suffers from mental illness more than others is inadequate. Although, it is well-known that environments that young people integrates with growing up plays a significant role in youths mental health. Despite that young women spend at least 3 hours there daily, social media is not included as such environment. This motivated the study's purpose, to investigate young women's experiences about social media as an emerging environment in relation to their identity and health. Qualitative methodology enabled the collection of material through semistructured interviews in focus groups. The study found that young women perceive social media as an environment as realistic as any other environments they interact with growing up. The results of the study also describe the experiences of mental illness associated with social media, but that a high self-esteem serves as a protective factor. The conclusion explains whether there are determinants of health on social media, these should be considered as impactable provided they are discovered and documented. Therefore, future health work is proposed focusing on safe navigation for young people on social media. The conclusion demonstrates the importance of public health science research continuing in line with current social development, which in the study is understood to be digitized, in order not to lose valuable knowledge about what leads or interrupts courses against mental illness.
