2. Generalized Fermi-Dirac Functions and Derivatives: Properties and Evaluation

Abstract

The generalized Fermi-Dirac functions and their derivatives are important in evaluating the thermodynamic quantities of partially degenerate electrons in hot dense stellar plasmas. New recursion relations of the generalized Fermi-Dirac functions have been found. An effective numerical method to evaluate the derivatives of the generalized Fermi-Dirac functions up to third order with respect to both degeneracy and temperature is then proposed, following Aparicio. A Fortran program based on this method, together with a sample test case, is provided. Accuracy and domain of reliability of some other, popularly used analytic approximations of the generalized Fermi-Dirac functions for extreme conditions are investigated and compared with our results., Comment: accepted for publication in Comp. 13. Information content in reflected signals during GPS Radio Occultation observations.

Abstract

The possibility of extracting useful information about the state of the lower troposphere from the surface reflections that are often detected during GPS radio occultations (GPSRO) is explored. The clarity of the reflection is quantified, and can be related to properties of the surface and the low troposphere. The reflected signal is often clear enough to be coherent, and can be tracked and processed as an extension of direct non-reflected GPSRO atmospheric profiles. A profile of bending angle vs. impact parameter can be obtained for these reflected signals, characterized by impact parameters that are below the apparent horizon, and that is a continuation at low altitude of the standard non-reflected bending angle profile. If there were no reflection, these would correspond to tangent altitudes below the local surface, and in particular below the local mean sea level. A forward operator is presented, for the evaluation of the bending angle of reflected GPSRO signals, given atmospheric properties as described by a Numerical Weather Prediction system. The operator is an extension, at lower impact parameters, of standard bending angle operators, and reproduces both the direct and reflected sections of the measured profile. It can be applied to the assimilation of the reflected section of the profile as supplementary data to the direct section. Although the principle is applicable also over land, this paper is focused on ocean cases, where the height of the reflecting surface, the sea level, is well known apriori. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We discuss an airborne experiment aimed to establish the potential of the PARIS concept (PAssive Reflectometry and Interferometry System) to retrieve small features in the sea surface topography. The date and location were chosen to coincide with a TOPEX/POSEIDON (T/P) overflight. The signals of the Global Positioning System (GPS) reflected off the sea surface are tracked and compared to the directly received ones, to compute the relative delays. The features detected in the peak tracking are likely caused by topographic and sea roughness variations. While very promising, these results open the challenge to use additional information to appropriately separate both contributions.

Abstract

El trabajo de campo ha sido realizado por un equipo de quince colaboradores coordinados por Mercè Morey López Este trabajo de investigación se inicia con una introducción a los objetivos, metodología y temporalización de la investigación, e introduce en el concepto de educación de personas adultas en el contexto de las conferencias internacionales. En segundo lugar se ahonda en la educación de las personas adultas en la Unión Europea. En tercer lugar se aborda la política de formación profesional de personas adultas de la Unión Europea. El siguiente capítulo se centra en la normativa estatal y europea, realizando un estudio comparativo de los objetivos, competencias y regulaciones, titulaciones y certificaciones, coordinación y participación, oferta educativa y ámbitos de actuación, tipos de centro, modalidades, alumnado, profesorado y plan de formación, diseño de intervención, y financiamiento. Los siguientes tres capítulos se centran en las Islas Baleares y respectivamente enmarcan la realidad de la educación de personas adultas en esta comunidad, apuntan las necesidades de educación y presentan las propuestas de ordenación, articulación y organización de la educación de personas adultas en el marco autonómico. El documento se completa con una selección de referencias bibliográficas y el cuestionario de análisis de necesidades de educación de adultos utilizado en la investigación. Baleares ESP

Abstract

[EN] We present two techniques of stochastic tomography of the ionosphere, useful for the study of its electron density distribution. The basic observables are the differential delays experienced by two signals emitted by a member of the Global Navigation Satellite System constellations collected by receivers onboard Low Earth Orbiter satellites. We discuss the Abel transform approach as a two-dimensional tomographic technique useful when the spherical symmetry assumption holds, and a more general four-dimensional tomographic approach. Finally, we apply these analysis tools to data collected onboard the Danish satellite Oersted., [ES] Se presentan dos procedimientos de tomografía estocástica para el análisis de la densidad electrónica de la ionosfera. El mecanismo de sondeo es el análisis del tiempo de retardo en la propagación de las señales de radio de los sistemas de posicionamiento global. En primer lugar, se discuten las técnicas basadas en la Transformación de Abel, que son de aplicación cuando existe simetría esférica en la distribución. Seguidamente, se discuten las técnicas tomográficas, que permiten mayor libertad en la elección de las hipótesis sobre la presencia de simetrías en el sistema.
