Abstract

International audience; We study languages of lambda-terms generated by IO and OI unsafe grammars. These languages can be used to model meaning representations in the formal semantics of natural languages following the tradition of Montague. Using techniques pertaining to the denotational semantics of the simply typed lambda-calculus, we show that the emptiness and membership problems for both types of grammars are decidable. In the course of the proof of the decidability results for OI, we identify a decidable variant of the lambda-definability problem, and prove a stronger form of Statman's finite completeness Theorem.

Abstract

International audience; We present a model of the syntax-semantics interface for Tree-Adjoining Grammars (TAGs). It is based on the encoding of TAGs within the framework of Abstract Categorial Grammars (ACGs). This encoding relies on a functional interpretation of the substitution and adjunction operations of TAGs. In ACGs, the abstract terms representing derivation trees are full-fledged objects of the grammar. These terms are mapped onto logical formulas representing the semantic interpretation of natural expressions that TAGs can analyze. Because of the reversibility properties of ACGs, this provides a way to parse and generate with the same TAG encoded grammar. We propose several analyses, including long distance dependencies, quantification, control and raising verbs, and subordinate clauses. We also show how this encoding easily extends to other phenomena such as idioms or scope ambiguities. All the lexical data for theses modellings are provided and can be run with the ACG toolkit, a software package dedicated to the development of ACGs that can use these grammars both for parsing and generation.

Abstract

Our project aimed at developing grammars for text parsing and generation, with a lexical description of the syntactic, semantic, and discourse properties of words. To this end, we have used the grammatical framework of Abstract Categorial Grammars (ACG). This framework allows us to describe reversible grammars, i.e., that are suitable both for parsing and for generation., Notre projet vise à développer des grammaires pour l'analyse et la génération de textes, avec une description des propriétés lexicales, syntactiques, sémantiques et discursives des mots. À cette fin nous avons utilisé le cadre grammatical des Grammaires Catégorielles Abstraites (ACG). Ce cadre nous a permis de décrire des grammaires réversibles, c'est-à-dire permettant à la fois l'analyse et la génération.

Abstract

Classical theories of discourse semantics, such as Discourse Representation Theory (DRT), Dynamic Predicate Logic (DPL), predict that an indefinite noun phrase cannot serve as antecedent for an anaphor if the noun phrase is, but the anaphor is not, in the scope of a modal expression. However, this prediction meets with counterexamples. The phenomenon modal subordination is one of them. In general, modal subordination is concerned with more than two modalities, where the modality in subsequent sentences is interpreted in a context ‘subordinate’ to the one created by the first modal expression. In other words, subsequent sentences are interpreted as being conditional on the scenario introduced in the first sentence. One consequence is that the anaphoric potential of indefinites may extend beyond the standard limits of accessibility constraints. This paper aims to give a formal interpretation on modal subordination. The theoretical backbone of the current work is Type Theoretic Dynamic Logic (TTDL), which is a Montagovian account of discourse semantics. Different from other dynamic theories, TTDL was built on classical mathematical and logical tools, such as λ-calculus and Church’s theory of types. Hence it is completely compositional and does not suffer from the destructive assignment problem. We will review the basic set-up of TTDL and then present Kratzer’s theory on natural language modality. After that, by integrating the notion of conversation background, in particular, the modal base usage, we offer an extension of TTDL (called Modal-TTDL, or M-TTDL in short) which properly deals with anaphora across modality. The formal relation between Modal-TTDL and TTDL will be discussed as well. We uncover the difficulty of specific sense distinctions by investigating distributional bias and reducing the sparsity of existing small-scale corpora used in prior work. We build a semantically enriched model for modal sense classification by designing novel features related to lexical, proposition-level and discourse-level semantic factors. Besides improved classification performance, closer examination of interpretable feature sets unveils relevant semantic and contextual factors in modal sense classification. Finally, we investigate genre effects on modal sense distribution and how they affect classification performance. Our investigations uncover the difficulty of specific sense distinctions and how they are affected by training set size and distributional bias. Our large-scale experiments confirm that semantically enriched models outperform models built on shallow feature sets. Cross-genre experiments shed light on differences in sense distributions across genres and confirm that semantically enriched models have high generalization capacity, especially in unstable distributional settings.

Abstract

The goal of computational linguistics is to provide a formal account linguistical knowledge, and to produce algorithmic tools for natural language processing. Often, this is done in a so-called generative framework, where grammars describe sets of valid sentences by iteratively applying some set of rewrite rules. Another approach, based on model theory, describes instead grammaticality as a set of well-formedness logical constraints, relying on deep links between logic and automata in order to produce efficient parsers. This thesis favors the latter approach.Making use of several existing results in theoretical computer science, we propose a tool for linguistical description that is both expressive and designed to facilitate grammar engineering. It first tackles the abstract structure of sentences, providing a logical language based on lexical properties of words in order to concisely describe the set of grammaticaly valid sentences. It then draws the link between these abstract structures and their representations (both in syntax and semantics), through the use of linearization rules that rely on logic and lambda-calculus.Then in order to validate this proposal, we use it to model various linguistic phenomenas, ending with a specific focus on languages that include free word order phenomenas (that is, sentences which allow the free reordering of some of their words or syntagmas while keeping their meaning), and on their algorithmic complexity.; La linguistique informatique a pour objet de construire un modèle formel des connaissances linguistiques, et d’en tirer des algorithmes permettant le traitement automatique des langues. Pour ce faire, elle s’appuie fréquemment sur des grammaires dites génératives, construisant des phrases valides par l’application successive de règles de réécriture. Une approche alternative, basée sur la théorie des modèles, vise à décrire la grammaticalité comme une conjonctionde contraintes de bonne formation, en s’appuyant sur des liens profonds entre logique et automates pour produire des analyseurs efficaces. Notre travail se situe dans ce dernier cadre.En s’appuyant sur plusieurs résultats existants en informatique théorique, nous proposons un outil de modélisation linguistique expressif, conçu pour faciliter l’ingénierie grammaticale. Celui-ci considère dans un premier temps la structure abstraite des énoncés, et fournit un langage logique s’appuyant sur les propriétés lexicales des mots pour caractériser avec concision l’ensemble des phrases grammaticalement correctes. Puis, dans un second temps, le lien entre ces structures abstraites et leurs représentations concrètes (en syntaxe et en sémantique) est établi par le biais de règles de linéarisation qui exploitent la logique et le lambda-calcul.Par suite, afin de valider cette approche, nous proposons un ensemble de modélisations portant sur des phénomènes linguistiques divers, avec un intérêt particulier pour le traitement des langages présentant des phénomènes d’ordre libre (c’est-à-dire qui autorisent la permutation de certains mots ou groupes de mots dans une phrase sans affecter sa signification), ainsi que pour leur complexité algorithmique.

Abstract

International audience; This paper is about the automated analysis of the lexical and compo-sitional semantics of nominalisation, in particular of felicitous co-predications — infelicitous ones are rejected. We focus on Brazilian Portuguese nominalisation introduced by the suffix-ura but our discussion applies to other nominalisations and languages as well. Much of the theoretical work on deverbals, including ours, concluded that deverbal senses (process, result, location and so on) are rather unforeseeable from the verb and the suffix. The (in)felicity of co-predication, that is the possible conjunction of two predicates which applies to different senses, is also difficult to predict, and in the case of deverbals it is assumed to be (almost) impossible. We present here a study of the CHAVE corpus and show that CHAVE does actually contain some of the supposedly non-existent copredica-tions. We explain our formalisation of sense variation and copredications in our logico-computational framework, Montagovean Generative Lexicon. We analyse the felicitous copredications and explain how the infelicitous ones are rejected. We give possible reasons for the felicity of the observed copredications, and finally we sketch out some guidelines for handling two notions that are necessary to a proper treatment of deverbals, namely local context and degree of semantic felicity.

Abstract

This article details the results of analyses we conducted on the discourse of schizophrenic patients, at the oral production (disfluences) and lexical (part-of-speech and lemmas) levels. This study is part of a larger project, which includes other levels of analyses (syntax and discourse). The obtained results should help us rebut or identify new linguistic evidence participating in the manifestation of a dysfunction at these different levels. The corpus contains more than 375,000 words, its analysis therefore required that we use Natural Language Processing (NLP) and lexicometric tools. In particular, we processed disfluencies and parts-of-speech separately, which allowed us to demonstrate that if schizophrenic patients do produce more disfluencies than control, their lexical richness is not significatively different., Comment: in French

International audience; RÉSUMÉ. L'une des questions du traitement automatique des langues est de discuter de la réalité de la capacité langagière des formalismes. Au delà de la modélisation linguistique, la théorie générative de Chomsky et le minimalisme s'intéressent à appréhender le langage humain en tant que processus cognitif, ce qui conduit à introduire le principe de dérivation par phases. Une première formalisation du minimalisme a été proposée dans (Stabler, 1997) afin, notamment, d'en étudier les propriétés computationnelles. L'extension formelle proposée ici, basée sur les Grammaires Minimalistes Catégorielles, (Amblard, 2011), s'attache à intégrer la notion de phase dans un cadre logique qui permet aussi de définir un calcul sémantique. Les enjeux de cette modélisation nous amènent à discuter de la commutativité et de la non-commutativité dans le formalisme. ABSTRACT. One of the recurring questions in natural language processing is the models's ability to account for the reality of language ability. Chomsky's Generative Theory and Minimalism are interested in understanding human language as a cognitive process, which is especially highlighted in the latest proposals by the principle of derivation by phases. A first formaliza-tion of Minimalism was introduced in (Stabler, 1997) to study the computational properties. The extension proposed here attempts to account for the idea of phase in a logical framework that allows to easily define a semantic calculus from parsing. This approach raises the problem of using the commutativity and non-commutativity in the Minimalist Categorial Grammars , (Amblard, 2011).

Abstract

Lambeks Syntactic Calculus, commonly referred to as the Lambek calculus, was innovative in many ways, notably as a precursor of linear logic. But it also showed that we could treat our grammatical framework as a logic (as opposed to a logical theory). However, though it was successful in giving at least a basic treatment of many linguistic phenomena, it was also clear that a slightly more expressive logical calculus was needed for many other cases. Therefore, many extensions and variants of the Lambek calculus have been proposed, since the eighties and up until the present day. As a result, there is now a large class of calculi, each with its own empirical successes and theoretical results, but also each with its own logical primitives. This raises the question: how do we compare and evaluate these different logical formalisms? To answer this question, I present two unifying frameworks for these extended Lambek calculi. Both are proof net calculi with graph contraction criteria. The first calculus is a very general system: you specify the structure of your sequents and it gives you the connectives and contractions which correspond to it. The calculus can be extended with structural rules, which translate directly into graph rewrite rules. The second calculus is first-order (multiplicative intuitionistic) linear logic, which turns out to have several other, independently proposed extensions of the Lambek calculus as fragments. Abstract

International audience; This article presents a method to interface a sentential grammar and a discourse grammar without resorting to an intermediate processing step. The method is general enough to build discourse structures that are direct acyclic graphs (DAG) and not only trees. Our analysis is based on Discourse Synchronous TAG (D-STAG), a Tree-Adjoining Grammar (TAG)-based approach to discourse. We also use an encoding of TAG into Abstract Categorial Grammar (ACG). This encoding allows us to express a higher-order semantic interpretation that enables building DAG discourse structures on the one hand, and to smoothly integrate the sentential and the discourse grammar thanks to the modular capability of ACG. All the examples of the article have been implemented and may be run and tested with the appropriate software.; Nous présentons une méthode pour articuler grammaire de phrase et grammaire de discours qui évite de recourir à une étape de traitement intermédiaire. Cette méthode est suffisamment générale pour construire des structures discursives qui ne soient pas des arbres mais des graphes orientés acycliques (DAG). Notre analyse s'appuie sur une approche de l'analyse discursive, Discourse Synchronous TAG (D-STAG), qui utilise les Grammaires d'Arbres Adjoint (TAG). Nous utilisons pour ce faire un encodage des TAG dans les Grammaires Catégorielles Abstraites (ACG). Cet encodage permet d'une part d'utiliser l'ordre supérieur pour l'interprétation sémantique afin de construire des structures qui soient des DAG et non des arbres, et d'autre part d'utiliser les propriétés de composition d'ACG pour réaliser naturellement l'interface entre grammaire phrastique et grammaire discursive. Abstract

In the quest to give a formal compositional semantics to natural languages, semanticists have started turning their attention to phenomena that have been also considered as parts of pragmatics (e.g., discourse anaphora and presupposition projection). To account for these phenomena, the very kinds of meanings assigned to words and phrases are often revisited. To be more specific, in the prevalent paradigm of modeling natural language denotations using the simply-typed lambda calculus (higher-order logic) this means revisiting the types of denotations assigned to individual parts of speech. However, the lambda calculus also serves as a fundamental theory of computation, and in the study of computation, similar type shifts have been employed to give a meaning to side effects. Abstract

International audience; We prove that non-linear second order Abstract Categorial Grammars (2ACGs) are equivalent to non-deleting 2ACGs. We prove this result first by using the intersection types discipline. Then we explain how coherence spaces can yield the same result. This result shows that restricting the Montagovian approach to natural language semantics to use only ΛI-terms has no impact in terms of the definable syn-tax/semantics relations. Moreover from the ACG perspective this result is a generalization of a result by Yoshinaka: it shows that deletion add no expressive power to second order ACGs.

Abstract

International audience; In the tradition of Model Theoretic Syntax, we propose a logical approach to the description of grammars. We combine in one formalism several tools that are used throughout computer science for their power of abstraction: logic and lambda calculus. We propose then a high-level formalism for describing mildly context sensitive grammars and their semantic interpretation. As we rely on the correspondence between logic and finite state automata, our method combines con-ciseness with effectivity. We illustrate our approach with a simple linguistic model of several interleaved linguistic phenomena involving extraction. The level of abstraction provided by logic and lambda calculus allows us not only to use this linguistic model for several languages, namely English, German, and Dutch, but also for semantic interpretation.

International audience; It has been argued that Davidson's event semantics does not combine smoothly with Montague's compositional semantics. The difficulty, which we call the event quantification problem, comes from a possibly bad interaction between event existential closure, on the one hand, and quantification, negation, or conjunction, on the other hand. The re-cent literature provides two solutions to this problem. The first one is due to Champollion, and the second one to Winter and Zwarts. The present paper elaborates on this second solution. In particular, it provides a treatment of quantified adverbial modifiers, which was absent from Winter and Zwarts.

International audience; We demonstrate how the specifics of the semantics for mass nouns can be integrated in a recent type-theoretical framework with rich lexical semantics, similarly to collective plural readings. We also explore the significance of an higher-order type system for gradable predicates and other complex predications, as well as the relevance of a multi-sorted approach to such phenomena. All the while, we will detail the process of analysis from syntax to semantics and ensure that compositionality and computability are kept. The distinction between massive and countable entities is similar to a clas-sical type/token distinction — as an example of the type/token distinction, "the bike" can refer both to a single physical bicycle (as in the sentence "the bike is in the garage") but also the the class of all bicycles (as in the sentence "the bike is a common mode of transport in Amsterdam"). However, linguists such as Brendan Gillon warn against such a generalisation (long made in the literature) and remark that, as far as the language is concerned, mass nouns are more alike to the collective readings of pluralised count nouns. Among the many similarities is, for instance, the identical behaviour of plurals and mass nouns with cumulat-ive readings: "Both the pens on the desk and the pens in storage use black ink, so I only have black pens" and "There is red wine on display and red wine in the back, so we only have red" are logically similar (see [5] for discussion). Several different approaches have been proposed to account for the specific semantic issues of mass nouns, from Godehard Link's augmented mereological approach in [12] to David Nicolas' revision of plural logic in [25], all remarking upon this similarity. Many different formalisms, using advanced type theories for the purpose of modelling semantics, have been recently proposed, see e. g. [1,3]. Among those, we proposed a semantic framework based on a multi-sorted logic with higher-order types in order to account for notoriously difficult phenomena pertaining (among many others) for many helpful discussions.

Abstract

International audience; Phenomena on the syntax-semantics interface of natural languages have been observed to have links with programming language semantics, namely computa- tional effects and evaluation order. We explore this connection to be able to profit from recent development in the study of effects. We propose adopting algebraic effects and handlers as tools for facilitating a uniform and integrated treatment of different non-compositional phenomena on the syntax-semantics interface.In this paper, we give an exposition of the framework of algebraic effects and handlers with an eye towards its applicability in computational semantics. We then present some exemplary analyses in the framework: we study the interplay of anaphora and quantification by translating the continuation-based dynamic logic of de Groote into a more DRT-like theory and we propose a treatment of overt wh-movement which avoids higher-order types in the syntax.

International audience; G-TAG est un formalisme dédié à la génération de textes. Il s'appuie sur les Grammaires d'Arbres Adjoints (TAG) qu'il étend avec des notions propres permettant de construire une forme de surface à partir d'une représentation conceptuelle. Cette représentation conceptuelle est indépendante de la langue, et le formalisme G-TAG a été conçu pour la mise en œuvre de la synthèse dans une langue cible à partir de cette représentation. L'objectif de cet article est d'étudier G-TAG et les notions propres que ce formalisme introduit par le biais des Grammaires Catégorielles Abstraites (ACG) en exploitant leurs propriétés de réversibilité intrinsèque et leur propriété d'encodage des TAG. Nous montrons que les notions clefs d'arbre de g-dérivation et de lexicalisation en G-TAG s'expriment naturellement en ACG. La construction des formes de surface peut alors utiliser les algorithmes généraux associés aux ACG et certaines constructions absentes de G-TAG peuvent être prises en compte sans modification supplémentaire.

Abstract

International audience; G-TAG is a Tree Adjoining Grammar (TAG) based formalism which was specifically designed for the task of text generation. Contrary to TAG, the derivation structure becomes primary, as pivot between the conceptual representation and the surface form. This is a shared feature with the encoding of TAG into Abstract Categorial Grammars. This paper propose to study G-TAG from an ACG perspective. We rely on the reversibility property of ACG that makes both parsing and generation fall within a common morphism inversion process. Doing so, we show how to overcome some limitations of G-TAG regarding predicative adjunction and how to propose alternative approaches to some phenomena.

International audience; In this paper, we show that contingency connectives, which mark causal and conditional relations , restrict the possible interpretations of reports in their scope in a way that many other connectives, such as contrastive connectives, do not. We argue that this result has immediate implications for the semantics of causal relations and for the annotation of implicit connectives. International audience; This paper presents an encoding of Generation-TAG (G-TAG) within Abstract Categorial Grammars (ACG). We show how the key notions of G-TAG have a natural interpretation in ACG, allowing us to use its reversibility property for text generation. It also offers solutions to several limitations of G-TAG.

Abstract

International audience; Neg-Raising (NR) verbs form a class of verbs with a clausal complement that show the following behavior: when a negation syntactically attaches to the matrix predicate, it can semantically attach to the embedded predicate. This paper presents an account of NR predicates within Tree Adjoining Grammar (TAG). We propose a lexical semantic interpretation that heavily relies on a Montague-like semantics for TAG and on higher-order types.

Abstract

International audience; This paper gives an Abstract Categorial Grammar (ACG) account of (Kallmeyer and Kuhlmann, 2012)'s process of transformation of the derivation trees of Tree Adjoining Grammar (TAG) into dependency trees. We make explicit how the requirement of keeping a direct interpretation of dependency trees into strings results into lexical ambiguity. Since the ACG framework has already been used to provide a logical semantics from TAG derivation trees, we have a unified picture where derivation trees and dependency trees are related but independent equivalent ways to account for the same surface--meaning relation.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper, we show how a rich lexico-semantic network which has been built using serious games, JeuxDeMots, can help us in grounding our semantic ontologies as well as different sorts of information in doing formal semantics using rich or modern type theories (type theories within the tradition of Martin Löf). We discuss the domain of base types, adjectival and verbal types, hyperonymy/hyponymy relations as well as more advanced issues like homophony and polysemy. We show how one can take advantage of this wealth in a formal compositional semantics framework. This is a way to sidestep the problem of deciding how your type ontology should look like once you have made a move to a many sorted type system. Furthermore, we show how this kind of information can be extracted from JeuxdeMots and inserted into a proof-assistant like Coq in order to perform reasoning tasks using modern type theoretic semantics.
