International audience; Delineating the urban form is a complex task, involving all actors of landuse planning and different scientific disciplines (geography, economics, landscape ecology) for multiple reflections and objectives (measurement of urban sprawl, detection of urban areas, proximity of agricultural areas to the city). In our case, according to Brinkley’s theory, this work states on the assumption that the “rugosity” (complexity) of the urban boundary would positively influence the connection conditions of nearby agriculture to local markets (Brinkley, 2018). In this context, we propose a method in mathematical morphology (dilation/erosion) to detect the most relevant urban boundary at different scales. This study will be located on 13 towns in the south of France (Vaucluse and Bouches du Rhône departments), some of the most productive in fruit and vegetable, targetting local short supply chain.; Délimiter la forme urbaine est une étude complexe, que tout acteur de l’aménagementdu territoire et des différentes disciplines scientifiques (géographie, économie,écologie du paysage) étudie pour de multiples réflexions (exemple : mesure del’étalement urbain, détection des zones urbaines ou périurbaines, proximité des zonesagricoles par rapport à la ville). Dans ce contexte, nous proposons une méthodeen morphologie mathématique (dilatation / érosion) pour détecter la limite urbaine laplus pertinente en fonction de l’échelle. Cette étude se localise sur 13 villes du sud dela France (département du Vaucluse et des bouches du Rhône) parmi les plus productives en fruits et légumes en circuits de proximité.

Applying deep learning to images of cropping systems provides new knowledge and insights in research and commercial applications. Semantic segmentation or pixel-wise classification, of RGB images acquired at the ground level, into vegetation and background is a critical step in the estimation of several canopy traits. Current state of the art methodologies based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are trained on datasets acquired under controlled or indoor environments. These models are unable to generalize to real-world images and hence need to be fine-tuned using new labelled datasets. This motivated the creation of the VegAnn - Vegetation Annotation - dataset, a collection of 3775 multi-crop RGB images acquired for different phenological stages using different systems and platforms in diverse illumination conditions. We anticipate that VegAnn will help improving segmentation algorithm performances, facilitate benchmarking and promote large-scale crop vegetation segmentation research.

Tapinoma melanocephalum(Fabricius, 1793), known under the vernacular name Ghost Ant and being a widely distributed cosmopolitan tramp species with significant pest status, has been considered long-since to represent a single species. Yet, investigation of 83 worker samples from the whole globe provided evidence that the Ghost Ant consists of two species: 8.4% of the samples belonged to the new speciesT. pithecorumsp. nov. whereas 91.6% were classified asT. melanocephalum. Absence of mixed samples indicates thatT. melanocephalumandT. pithecorumsp. nov. do not represent morphs of the same species.T.pithecorumsp. nov. is known from a greenhouse finding in Germany and outdoor populations from the south of the Arabian Peninsula, Pakistan, India, Malaysia and the Fiji and Christmas Islands. The phenotypical separation of the new species from other minuteTapinomaspecies of Orientalic, Indo-Australian and Australasian origin is very clear, allowing identification even by evaluation of z-stack photos. A detailed argumentation is presented thatTapinoma pellucida(Smith, 1857),T. coronatum(Forel, 1908),T. malesianum(Forel, 1913),T. australis(Santschi, 1928),T. australe(Santschi, 1928),T. luffae(Kurian, 1955),T. wallacei(Guerrero, 2018) andT. jerdoninom. nov. should be considered as synonyms ofT. melanocephalum. Synomymies ofT. melanocephalumandT. pithecorumsp. nov. withT. indicum(Forel, 1895) andTapinoma minutum(Mayr, 1862) are clearly excluded by morphometric data. Diagrams of principal component analyses, photos, a key as well as a morphometric table to separate these four species are presented. In a concluding section, is argued that the true number of species related to these four species is much larger than presently known and a warning is given regarding careless use of pigmentation characters in ant identification. Pixelwise image classification based on time series profiles has been very effective in several applications. In this letter, we investigate recently proposed image-based time series encoding approaches [e.g., Gramian angular summation field/Gramian angular difference field (GASF/GADF) and Markov transition field (MTF)] to support the identification of eucalyptus regions in remote sensing images. We perform a comparative study concerning the combination of image-based representations suitable for encoding the most important time series patterns with the ability of state-of-the-art deep-learning-based approaches for characterizing image visual properties. The comparative study demonstrates that the evaluated image representations, combined with different deep learning feature extractors lead to highly effective classification results, which are superior to those of recently proposed methods for time-series-based eucalyptus plantation detection.

International audience; This paper addresses the pixelwise classification problem based on temporal profiles, which are encoded in two-dimensional representations based on Recurrence Plots, Gramian Angular/Difference Fields, and Markov Transition Field. We propose a multi-representational fusion scheme that exploits the complementary view provided by those time series representations , and different data-driven feature extractors and classifiers. We validate our ensemble scheme in the problem related to the classification of eucalyptus plantations in remote sensing images. Achieved results demonstrate that our proposal overcomes recently proposed baselines, and now represents the new state-of-the-art classification solution for the target dataset.

The objective of this thesis is to develop a way to detect weeds in a field using multispectral images, in order to determine which weeds should be eliminated during the current crop cycle and more particularly at the early stages. The multi-criteria approach focuses on the spatial arrangement, the spectral signature, the morphology and the texture of the plants located in the plots. This work proposes a method for selecting the best criteria for optimal discrimination for a given setup. Prior to the extraction of these criteria, a set of methods was developed in order to correct the errors of the acquisition device, to precisely detect the vegetation and then to identify within the vegetation the individuals on which the different criteria can be computed. For the individual detection step, it appears that leaf scale is more suitable than plant scale. Vegetation detection and leaf identification are based on deep learning methods capable of processing dense foliage. The introduction of these methods in a usual processing chain constitutes the originality of this manuscript where each part was the subject of an article. Concerning the acquisition device, a method of spectral band registration was developed. Then, new vegetation indices based on artificial intelligence constitute one of the scientific advances of this thesis. As an indication, these indices offer a mIoU of 82.19% when standard indices ceil at 63.93%-73.71%. By extension, a leaf detection method was defined and is based on the detection of their contours, this method seems advantageous on our multispectral data. Finally, the best property pairs were defined for crop/weed discrimination at leaf level, whith classification performances up to 91%., L'objectif de cette thèse est de mettre au point un moyen de détecter les adventices dans un champ à l'aide d'images multispectrales, afin de pouvoir déterminer quelles sont les adventices à éliminer pendant le cycle de culture en cours et plus particulièrement aux stades précoces. L'approche multi-critère s'intéresse à la disposition spatiale, à la signature spectrale, à la morphologie et à la texture des plantes présentes dans les parcelles. Ce manuscrit propose une méthode permettant de sélectionner les meilleurs critères pour une discrimination optimale dans un contexte donné. Préalablement à l'extraction de ces critères, un ensemble de méthodes ont été développées afin de corriger les erreurs du dispositif d'acquisition, de détecter précisément la végétation, puis d'identifier au sein de la végétation les individus sur lesquels les différents critères peuvent être extraits. Pour l'étape de détection des individus, il s'est révélé que l'échelle de la feuille était plus adaptée que celle de la plante. La détection de la végétation et l'identification des feuilles s'appuient sur des méthodes d'apprentissage profond, capables de traiter des feuillages denses. L'introduction de ces méthodes dans une chaîne de traitement usuelle constitue l'originalité de ce manuscrit où chaque partie a fait l'objet d'un article. Concernant le dispositif d'acquisition, une méthode de recalage des bandes spectrales a été développée, et les résultats montrent une précision de l'ordre du pixel. Ensuite, de nouveaux indices de végétation reposant sur de l'intelligence artificielle constituent l'une des avancées scientifiques de cette thèse. A titre indicatif, ces indices permettent d'atteindre 82.19% de mIoU contre 63.93%-73.71% pour des indices standards et fonctionnent en environnement non-contrôlé. Par extension, une méthode de détection des feuilles a été définie. Elle repose sur la détection de leurs contours, et semble avantageuse sur nos données multispectrales. Finalement, les meilleurs couples de propriétés ont été définis pour la discrimination culture/adventices à l'échelle de la feuille, dont les performances atteignent 91% de classification.

This study deals with developments to increase the possibilities offered by laboratory X-ray computed tomography in material science by focusing on contrast enhancement and on time resolution aspect. First, the feasibility of using a new generation photon-counting detector (PCD) in lab-CT was evaluated. The characterization of the standard imaging performances and the spectral capabilities of four PCDs were carried out and compared to a standard flat-panel detector. The potential of PCD towards spectral and single-shot K-edge imaging was investigated. Second, a model-based optimization strategy is developed to define the suitable CT scanning parameters for dynamic in situ acquisitions with an image quality allowing qualitative or quantitative analysis. The model is based on three modules: modelling noise in the feature of interest, X-ray absorption simulation tool, and the screening algorithm that outputs the different possible scanning configurations associated with the probability of detection of the interested feature size for each configuration. A real-time in-situ test with sub-minute temporal resolution was performed with the experimentally optimized CT set-up as an application aspect of the thesis. The experimental configuration is confronted with the proposed optimization model configurations, which were found to be in-line with the chosen setup. The application corresponds to the real-time monitoring of microstructural evolution of 3D printed cellulose parts during air-drying phenomena with qualitative and quantitative analysis. Tout d'abord, la faisabilité de l'utilisation d'un détecteur de comptage de photons (PCD) de nouvelle génération en laboratoire CT a été évaluée. La caractérisation des performances d'imagerie standard et des capacités spectrales de quatre PCD a été réalisée et comparée à un détecteur à écran plat standard. Le potentiel de la PCD vers l'imagerie spectrale et mono-coup K-edge a été étudié. Deuxièmement, une stratégie d'optimisation basée sur un modèle est développée. Elle vise à sélectionner les paramètres de scanner appropriés pour des acquisitions dynamiques in-situ avec une qualité d'image permettant une analyse qualitative ou quantitative. Le modèle est basé sur trois modules : la modélisation du bruit dans la caractéristique d'intérêt, l'outil de simulation d'absorption des rayons X et l'algorithme de dépistage qui produit les différentes configurations de balayage possibles associées à la probabilité de détection de la taille de la caractéristique intéressée pour chaque configuration. Un test in-situ en temps réel avec une résolution temporelle inférieure à la minute a été réalisé avec la configuration CT expérimentalement optimisée comme aspect d'application de la thèse. La configuration expérimentale est confrontée aux configurations de modèle d'optimisation proposées, qui se sont révélées conformes à la configuration choisie. L'application correspond au suivi en temps réel de l'évolution microstructurale des pièces en cellulose imprimées en 3D lors des phénomènes de séchage à l'air avec analyse qualitative et quantitative. Elle illustre les capacités de caractérisation quantitative du lab-CT pour l'imagerie in-situ à grande vitesse.

Forest landscape restoration (FLR) commitments have been established in the past years to restore over 200 million hectares, as part of the global Bonn Challenge goal, mostly through the implementation of several different restorative practices in degraded lands, ranging from commercial tree monocultures to restoration plantings. The potential of such contrasting restorative practices to support biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services provision vary over space and time, making the monitoring of FLR programs an emerging challenge. Remote sensing techniques, together with innovative technologies for data acquisition, treatment, and analysis have proven to be strategic for planning and monitoring FLR, yet there are still important unresolved questions. Here, we evaluated the potential of multispectral orbital images of the high spatial (5 m) and spectral (12 bands) resolution VENμS microsatellite, joint project of the Israeli Space Agency and CNES, to classify the spectral behavior and diversity of six tree cover classes (savanna woodlands, old- and second-growth semi-deciduous forests, young restoration plantings, and eucalyptus and pine tree monocultures) commonly found in FLR programs in tropical regions. We assessed how these tree cover classes located in a study landscape in southeastern Brazil differ according to their spectral response (winter and summer bands, and vegetation indices), canopy variability (textural features), seasonal behavior (delta layers - difference between summer and winter vegetation indexes), and spectral diversity, and used these attributes as variables to the model. We used the Random Forest algorithm to generate the models and evaluate how the tree cover classes differ in the classification and how the variables supported the model. We achieved high values of global accuracy (91.9%) and “F1 score” (above 0.8) for all tree cover classes, in which second-growth forest presented the lowest accuracy. The textural layers, delta layers, and the spectral diversity layers were the most important attributes to discriminate among tree cover classes. We demonstrate here the potential of using VENμS or similar sensor images together with different image processing and machine learning algorithms to monitor FLR programs, allowing further remote sensing approaches and in-deep field assessments to advance evaluation of FLR benefits for nature and people. We demonstrated how the fusion of all these types of data and innovative approaches to data processing, can result in novel ways to assess restoration performance and open new avenues to upscale monitoring, bridging the gap between FLR expectations and achieved goals.

During pre-implantation development, the mammalian embryo forms the blastocyst, which is the structure embedding the embryo into the uterus. The shaping of the blastocyst relies in large part on contractile forces generated by the actomyosin cortex. In the mouse, on timescales of seconds, we observe pulses of actomyosin contractions traveling periodically around the cell perimeter. We call this phenomenon periodic cortical waves of contraction (PeCoWaCo), a fascinating and poorly understood manifestation of contractility. In this study, we take advantage of the slow development of the mouse embryo to study thousands of contraction pulses and of the robustness of the mouse embryo to size manipulation to explore the biophysical properties of PeCoWaCo during the cleavage stages preceding early mammalian morphogenesis. We find that, during cleavage stages, periodic movements appear occasionally at the zygote and the 2-cell stage and become systematic after the 2nd round of cleavage divisions. Interestingly, the period of oscillations progressively decreases from 200 s at the zygote stage to 80 s at the 8-cell stage. Since cells becomes successively smaller with successive cleavage divisions, cell size could be an important determinant in the initiation and regulation of PeCoWaCo. We manipulate cell size on a broad range of cell radii (10-40 µm) using fragmentation and fusion of cells and find that the initiation, persistence or properties of PeCoWaCo do not depend on cell size. Following the period of PeCoWaCo, we discover that blastomeres gradually decrease their surface tensions until the 8-cell stage and that artificially softening cells enhances PeCoWaCo prematurely. Therefore, during cleavage stages, cortical softening awakens zygotic contractility before preimplantation morphogenesis. In addition, by manipulating actomyosin contractility using mutants and drugs, we showed that the period of PeCoWaCo can be tuned by F-actin polymerization rate and myosin motor activity. Altogether our results on biophysical and molecular aspects of PeCoWaCo help us understand how actomyosin contractility awakens before preimplantation morphogenesis and how it is regulated both mechanically and molecularly., Au cours du développement préimplantatoire, l'embryon de mammifère forme le blastocyste, qui est la structure fixant l'embryon dans l'utérus. La formation du blastocyste repose en grande partie sur les forces contractiles générées par le cortex d'actomyosine. Chez la souris, sur des échelles de temps de quelques secondes, nous observons des impulsions de contractions d'actomyosine voyageant périodiquement autour du périmètre cellulaire. Nous appelons ce phénomène vagues de contraction corticale périodique (PeCoWaCo), une manifestation fascinante et mal comprise de la contractilité. Dans cette étude, nous profitons du développement lent de l'embryon de souris pour étudier des milliers d'impulsions de contraction. Nous mettons également à profit la robustesse de ce développement pour explorer les propriétés biophysiques des PeCoWaCo pendant les étapes de clivage précédant la morphogenèse précoce des mammifères.Nous constatons que, lors des étapes de clivage, des mouvements périodiques apparaissent occasionnellement au stade zygote et 2-cellules puis deviennent systématiques après le 2ème cycle de divisions de clivage. Fait intéressant, la période des oscillations diminue progressivement de 200s au stade zygote à 80s au stade 8-cellules. Étant donné que les cellules deviennent de plus en plus petites avec des divisions de clivage successives, la taille des cellules pourrait être un déterminant important dans l'initiation et la régulation des PeCoWaCo. Nous manipulons la taille des cellules sur une large gamme de rayons cellulaires (10-40 µm) en utilisant la fragmentation et la fusion des cellules et constatons que l'initiation, la persistance ou les propriétés des PeCoWaCo ne dépendent pas de la taille des cellules. Après la période des PeCoWaCo, on découvre que les tensions de surface des blastomères diminuent progressivement jusqu'au stade de 8-cellules et que l’assouplissement artificiel des cellules augmente prématurément les PeCoWaCo. Par conséquent, lors des étapes de clivage, l’assouplissement cortical réveille la contractilité zygotique avant la morphogenèse préimplantatoire. National audience; Les trous noirs font partie des objets astrophysiques les plus étudiés de la science et plébiscités par les publics. Parmi les questions spontanées des publics, l’une d’entre elles a particulièrement attiré notre attention : « À quoi ça ressemble puisque c’est noir ? ». En effet, les médiateurs scientifiques ont recours à une grande variété d’images. Cependant, une difficulté surgit d’emblée : rien ne peut échapper aux trous noirs, pas même la lumière. Or, si aucune source de lumière n'en émane, comment représenter un objet qui est par définition invisible ? Les médiateurs et les institutions de diffusion de la recherche en astrophysique disposent bien sûr d’images scientifiques publiées par des astrophysiciens, mais qui ne sont pas forcément celles diffusées auprès des publics non-spécialistes. Pendant cette présentation, nous avons questionné les différences visuelles que nous constatons entre les images de trous noirs produites par les scientifiques (destinées au cercle des spécialistes) et celles qui sont produites par la NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration - (destinées aux publics néophytes). Les représentations visuelles destinées à la médiation sont dénuées de certains concepts scientifiques relatifs à la forme apparente d'un trou noir. Or, ces concepts manquants, les visuels des trous noirs mobilisés en médiation scientifique s'éloignent des visuels produits par les astrophysiciens. L'image de médiation dénature-t-elle l'objet trou noir ?

International audience; Automated image analysis and deep learning tools such as object detection models are being used increasingly by biologists. However, biological datasets often have constraints that are challenging for the use of deep learning. Classes are often imbalanced, similar, or too few for robust learning. In this paper we present a robust method relying on hierarchical classification to perform very small object detection. We illustrate our results on a custom dataset featuring 22 classes of arthropods used to study biodiversity. This dataset shows several constraints that are frequent when using deep learning on biological data with a high class imbalance, some classes learned on only a few training examples and a high similarity between classes. We propose to first perform detection at a super-class level, before performing a detailed classification at a class level. We compare the obtained results with our proposed method to a global detector, trained without hierarchical classification. Our method succeeds in obtaining a mAP of 75 %, while the global detector only achieves a mAP of 48 %. Moreover, our method shows high precision even on classes with the less train examples. Confusions between classes with our method are fewer and are of a lesser impact. We are able achieve a more robust object classification with the use of our proposed method. This method can also enable better control on the model's output which can be particularly valuable when handling ecological, biological or medical data for example.

During pre-implantation development, the mammalian embryo forms the blastocyst, which is the structure embedding the embryo into the uterus. The shaping of the blastocyst relies in large part on contractile forces generated by the actomyosin cortex. In the mouse, on timescales of seconds, we observe pulses of actomyosin contractions traveling periodically around the cell perimeter. We call this phenomenon periodic cortical waves of contraction (PeCoWaCo), a fascinating and poorly understood manifestation of contractility. In this study, we take advantage of the slow development of the mouse embryo to study thousands of contraction pulses and of the robustness of the mouse embryo to size manipulation to explore the biophysical properties of PeCoWaCo during the cleavage stages preceding early mammalian morphogenesis. We find that, during cleavage stages, periodic movements appear occasionally at the zygote and the 2-cell stage and become systematic after the 2nd round of cleavage divisions. Interestingly, the period of oscillations progressively decreases from 200 s at the zygote stage to 80 s at the 8-cell stage. Since cells becomes successively smaller with successive cleavage divisions, cell size could be an important determinant in the initiation and regulation of PeCoWaCo. We manipulate cell size on a broad range of cell radii (10-40 µm) using fragmentation and fusion of cells and find that the initiation, persistence or properties of PeCoWaCo do not depend on cell size. Following the period of PeCoWaCo, we discover that blastomeres gradually decrease their surface tensions until the 8-cell stage and that artificially softening cells enhances PeCoWaCo prematurely. Therefore, during cleavage stages, cortical softening awakens zygotic contractility before preimplantation morphogenesis. In addition, by manipulating actomyosin contractility using mutants and drugs, we showed that the period of PeCoWaCo can be tuned by F-actin polymerization rate and myosin motor activity. Altogether our results on biophysical and molecular aspects of PeCoWaCo help us understand how actomyosin contractility awakens before preimplantation morphogenesis and how it is regulated both mechanically and molecularly., Au cours du développement préimplantatoire, l'embryon de mammifère forme le blastocyste, qui est la structure fixant l'embryon dans l'utérus. La formation du blastocyste repose en grande partie sur les forces contractiles générées par le cortex d'actomyosine. Chez la souris, sur des échelles de temps de quelques secondes, nous observons des impulsions de contractions d'actomyosine voyageant périodiquement autour du périmètre cellulaire. Nous appelons ce phénomène vagues de contraction corticale périodique (PeCoWaCo), une manifestation fascinante et mal comprise de la contractilité. Dans cette étude, nous profitons du développement lent de l'embryon de souris pour étudier des milliers d'impulsions de contraction. Nous mettons également à profit la robustesse de ce développement pour explorer les propriétés biophysiques des PeCoWaCo pendant les étapes de clivage précédant la morphogenèse précoce des mammifères.Nous constatons que, lors des étapes de clivage, des mouvements périodiques apparaissent occasionnellement au stade zygote et 2-cellules puis deviennent systématiques après le 2ème cycle de divisions de clivage. Fait intéressant, la période des oscillations diminue progressivement de 200s au stade zygote à 80s au stade 8-cellules. Étant donné que les cellules deviennent de plus en plus petites avec des divisions de clivage successives, la taille des cellules pourrait être un déterminant important dans l'initiation et la régulation des PeCoWaCo. Nous manipulons la taille des cellules sur une large gamme de rayons cellulaires (10-40 µm) en utilisant la fragmentation et la fusion des cellules et constatons que l'initiation, la persistance ou les propriétés des PeCoWaCo ne dépendent pas de la taille des cellules. Après la période des PeCoWaCo, on découvre que les tensions de surface des blastomères diminuent progressivement jusqu'au stade de 8-cellules et que l’assouplissement artificiel des cellules augmente prématurément les PeCoWaCo. International audience; Herbarium specimens represent an outstanding source of material with which to study plant phenological changes in response to climate change. The fine‐scale phenological annotation of such specimens is nevertheless highly time consuming and requires substantial human investment and expertise, which are difficult to rapidly mobilize.Methods: We trained and evaluated new deep learning models to automate the detection, segmentation, and classification of four reproductive structures of Streptanthus tortuosus (flower buds, flowers, immature fruits, and mature fruits). We used a training data set of 21 digitized herbarium sheets for which the position and outlines of 1036 reproductive structures were annotated manually. We adjusted the hyperparameters of a mask R‐CNN (regional convolutional neural network) to this specific task and evaluated the resulting trained models for their ability to count reproductive structures and estimate their size.Results: The main outcome of our study is that the performance of detection and segmentation can vary significantly with: (i) the type of annotations used for training, (ii) the type of reproductive structures, and (iii) the size of the reproductive structures. In the case of Streptanthus tortuosus , the method can provide quite accurate estimates (77.9% of cases) of the number of reproductive structures, which is better estimated for flowers than for immature fruits and buds. The size estimation results are also encouraging, showing a difference of only a few millimeters between the predicted and actual sizes of buds and flowers.Discussion: This method has great potential for automating the analysis of reproductive structures in high‐resolution images of herbarium sheets. Deeper investigations regarding the taxonomic scalability of this approach and its potential improvement will be conducted in future work.

The aim of this study is to compare two computerized analysis methods of SEM dentinal walls views. The first technic is an indirect one using a primary marking and a secondary measurement. The second one is a direct threshold analyse, using the grey levels selection. The influency of the magnification is analysed in a second part.The first technic is considered as a reference one. The results show that the threshold measurement technic is only reliable at a high magnification. A direct surface measurement cannot be used at a low magnification.A pretreatment could enhance the ability of a computer to measure the areas covered with smear-layer or organic debris on SEM micrographs., Le but de cette étude est de comparer deux méthodes informatisées d’analyse de clichés de microscopie électronique à balayage de parois dentinaires, et d’évaluer l’influence du rapport d’agrandissement (x750, x5000). La première méthode, servant de référence, fait appel à un marquage des régions d’intérêt et une mesure secondaire. La seconde technique utilise le seuillage des niveaux de gris. Une méthode informatisée de mesure des surfaces recouvertes de smear-layer par sélection des niveaux de gris n’est fiable qu’à un fort rapport d’agrandissement (x5000).

Nowadays, the automotive coating market is governed by a demand for deep and vibrant colors with effects. In this field, the requirement is very high because the color is associated with a sign of quality. In a typical collision, different parts of the vehicle may be damaged. The damaged part must be repaired, sanded and prepared before being painted. To reduce costs, the body shop must then prepare a paint with a good color matching, and thus as fast as possible. It is therefore necessary for the formulation of the repair coating to reproduce the effects, both colored and textured, from absorbent or effect pigments (aluminum particles, pearlescent materials …) from a characterization of the concerned vehicle coating. It is relatively simple to qualify the colored effects from the reflectance curves and then the CIELab coordinates. However, the description of the texturing effect generated by the distribution of effect particles at the microstructure scale is quite complex. The metrological approach of the perceptive properties is still at its beginnings. The parameters used do not necessarily correspond directly to the phenomena actually perceived by the human eye. As part of this thesis work, the mobilization of expert knowledge through various sessions of free sorting and brainstorming on coated samples made it possible to highlight really perceptive texture descriptors. These descriptors have been the subject of "objective" evaluations by experienced observers. They thus made it possible to associate a quantitative evaluation scale with each descriptor. This stage of the present thesis work allowed the establishment of ground truth data materialized by a set of reference samples representing different ordered levels of a descriptor. These ground truth data were then used to design a set of measurable physical texture descriptors that were directly correlated to perceptual scales constructed in the previous step. In the procedure developed, the human eye has been replaced by a digital camera acting as a tristimulus integrator of radiometric information. The image acquisition phase was a decisive step in the process: it was necessary to reproduce the conditions of evaluation of the properties perceived, recognized and retained during the various stages using expert human observers. It was then possible to characterize the texture phenomena by image analysis and to correlate them with the values of the previously defined mean observer., Aujourd’hui, le marché de la peinture automobile est gouverné par une demande pour des couleurs profondes et vives avec effets. International audience; La compréhension du comportement thermo-hygro-viscoélastique du matériau bois pour l’industrie de la filière est cruciale : fiabilité des charpentes, séchage optimisé, lutherie, etc. Ce sujet a été largement étudié depuis le début des sciences du bois. Il rend compte de phénomènes divers et complexes dont l’effet mécanosorptif, le vieillissement physique, le couplage entre la mécanique de la rupture et la température. Cependant, c’est majoritairement le comportement du bois dans le domaine hygroscopique qui a été étudié, étant donné que le séchage est quasiment systématique avant utilisation. L’étude présentée rentre dans le cadre d’une thèse dont le but est d’étudier le comportement du sapin pectiné vert ou partiellement séché afin de déterminer de nouvelles solutions technologiques s’affranchissant du séchage. Pour cela, des essais de fluage sur des poutres entaillées en bois de sapin pectiné partiellement séché et en environnement extérieur abrité seront réalisés. Les paramètres suivis seront : ouverture et longueur de fissure, flèche centrale et courbure, retrait-gonflement et teneur en eau d’équilibre. Une méthode optique est en cours de développement avec comme objectif de mesurer rapidement, à bas coût et de façon répétable des grandeurs macroscopiques à partir de l’analyse de photographies. Ce résumé et le poster associé présentent les travaux menés pour explorer et tenter de valider cette méthode.

The root system architecture (RSA) of plants and its functioning play a fundamental role in a number of plant growth mechanisms including water and nutrient uptake. Optimization of the RSA is important for stable and increased plant productivity under adverse conditions. Despite its great importance, studying the RSA is notoriously laborious because of the difficulty of accessing the rooting system of plants. We developed a root phenotyping platform, PhenoRoots, which allows for the non-invasive study of plant RSA. The system was built using inexpensive material and was designed to provide medium throughput. Substrate or soil-filled rhizotrons are used to grow plantlets, whose roots are directly visible through a glass plate. An experiment conducted on a panel of twenty Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) varieties demonstrated the usefulness of the platform in assessing RSA traits. A number of traits, destructive and non-destructive, related to the RSA were measured and statistically analyzed. The non-destructive traits based on image analysis of roots were more accurate and showed high correlation with the time-consuming destructive measurements. The platform allowed for capturing the phenotypic and genetic variability found in the panel of cotton varieties, and to define three contrasting RSA patterns. PhenoRoots provides an inexpensive alternative to the medium throughput analysis of RSA traits in plants.
