24. How a Measuring Perspective Influences Pre-Service Teachers' Reasoning about Fractions with Discrete and Continuous Models

Abstract

How teachers interpret and express fractions critically influences their teaching and their students' fraction knowledge. Internationally, the mathematics education community has been studying ways to enhance preservice elementary teachers' rational number knowledge, particularly fractions. To address the challenge of augmenting pre-service teachers' fraction knowledge warrants theoretical and empirical revisions to standardized practices for teaching fractions. This study investigates how reexamining fractions from a distinctive measuring perspective influences pre-service teachers' reasoning about fractions. For four 75-minute sessions, 46 pre-service teachers enrolled in a teacher preparation program at a university in the United States revisited fractions from a measuring perspective. They engaged in tasks that focused on comparing continuous quantities and identifying relative magnitudes. The data for this study comprise their pre- and post-tests that assessed how they identify and represent fractions with discrete and continuous models. For each model, we analyzed participants' reasoning by attending to their written strategies. Findings revealed three main strategies: partition, construction, and symbolic manipulation. In general, participants expressed more strategies on the post-test for all fraction models. Partitioning was the most frequent strategy on the pre- and post-tests. However, the frequencies of strategies changed after the intervention. For example, with all models, there was an increase in partitioning strategy and a decrease in symbolic manipulation strategy. The results highlight affordances of a measuring perspective to support participants to shift from procedural strategies such as symbolic manipulation to more conceptual strategies to identify and represent fractions.

Abstract

The magnetohydrodynamics tangent hyperbolic nanofluid (THNF) flow with the mutual impact of melting heat transfer and wedge angle over a permeable wedge is investigated numerically in the present study. Electronic devices generate excessive heat during operations, so THNF is often employed to regulate them. THNF has the ability to neutralize heat with greater efficacy, thereby reducing the probability of overheating. The influence of thermal radiation, Soret and Dufour, and heat source/sink is also observed on the fluid flow. The modeled equations are simplified to the lowest order through the similarity conversion. The obtained set of dimensionless equations is further calculated numerically by employing the parametric continuation method. The computational findings of the present study are compared to the published results for accuracy purposes. It has been detected that the results are precise and reputable. Moreover, from the graphical results, it has been perceived that the effect of permeability factor (K p) reduces the fluid flow. The rising effect of wedge angle factor enhances the energy dissemination rate and shearing stress; however the augmentation of Weissenberg number drops skin friction and energy transference rate.

Abstract

Recent years have witnessed a remarkable development in communication and computing systems, mainly driven by the increasing demands of data and processing intensive applications such as virtual reality, M2M, connected vehicles, IoT services, to name a few. Massive amounts of data will be collected by various mobile and fixed terminals that will need to be processed in order to extract knowledge from the data. Traditionally, a centralized approach is taken for processing the collected data using large data centers connected to a core network. However, due to the scale of the Internet-connected things, transporting raw data all the way to the core network is costly in terms of the power consumption, delay, and privacy. This has compelled researchers to propose different decentralized computing paradigms such as fog computing to process collected data at the network edge close to the terminals and users. In this paper, we study, in a Passive Optical Network (PON)-based collaborative-fog computing system, the impact of the heterogeneity of the fog units capacity and energy-efficiency on the overall energy-efficiency of the fog system. We optimized the virtual machine (VM) placement in this fog system with three fog cells and formulated the problem as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) optimization model with the objective of minimizing the networking and processing power consumption of the fog system. The results indicate that in our proposed architecture, the processing power consumption is the crucial element to achieve energy efficient VMs placement.

45. Relationship between Translation Students' Grade Point Average Scores and Grammatical and Sociocultural Competencies at King Saud University

Abstract

The current study is motivated by the dearth of studies regarding English translation students' grammatical and sociocultural competencies and their relationship with their Grade Point Averages (GPAs). To fill this gap, this study sought to find if there is a statistically significant relationship between the respondents' GPAs and their levels of grammatical and cultural knowledge. To do this, a multiple-choice test with four sections was developed and validated by experts in the field to examine the respondents' levels of grammatical and sociocultural knowledge. The first two sections examined respondents' knowledge levels of the functions of the key elements of English language tense and aspect (FELTA) and Acceptable Forms of English Language Tense and Aspect (AFELTA). The other two sections examined their knowledge levels of aspects of the culture of American English native speakers (AspCNS) and culturally appropriate American English language use (AppLU). The sample for this study were selected randomly from the department of English Language and Translation at King Saud University. Seventy-five male English translation students from different college levels responded to the questionnaire test. Using descriptive statistics, the responses were coded and analyzed, and thereafter, the respondents' scores on each single section of the test were compared with their GPA scores to determine the statistical significance of differences and correlation. It was found that there was a statistically significant relationship between the GPA scores, the respondents' knowledge of AFELTA, and the knowledge of AppLU. However, no significant relationships were found between the GPA scores and the respondents' knowledge of FELTA or knowledge of AspCNS.

Abstract

There is a continuous growth in demand for time sensitive applications which has shifted the cloud paradigm from a centralized computing architecture towards distributed heterogeneous computing platforms where resources located at the edge of the network are used to provide cloud-like services. This paradigm is widely known as fog computing. Virtual machines (VMs) have been widely utilized in both paradigms to enhance the network scalability, improve resource utilization, and energy efficiency. Moreover, Passive Optical Networks (PONs) are a technology suited to handling the enormous volumes of data generated in the access network due to their energy efficiency and large bandwidth. In this paper, we utilize a PON to provide the connectivity between multiple distributed fog units to achieve federated (i.e. cooperative) computing units in the access network to serve intensive demands. We propose a mixed integer linear program (MILP) to optimize the VM placement in the federated fog computing units with the objective of minimizing the total power consumption while considering inter-VM traffic. The results show a significant power saving as a result of the proposed optimization model by up to 52%, in the VM-allocation compared to a baseline approach that allocates the VM requests while neglecting the power consumption and inter-VMs traffic in the optimization framework.
