This study is the first attempt to assess the diversity of beetles (Coleoptera) in terrestrial moss cushions on three West Indian islands (Hispaniola, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico) based on 10 years of moss sampling in 18 localities. In total 1711 adult beetles were collected. They belong to 234 species from 30 families. The most species and specimen rich families are Staphylinidae (86 morphospecies and 1195 specimens), Curculionidae (61 morphospecies and 131 specimens), and Chrysomelidae (16 morphospecies and 185 specimens). In addition to basic bryobionts feeding on moss tissues, moss cushions host a diverse fauna of mycophagous and saprophagous Coleoptera together with predaceous species of beetles. Our results suggest that community composition in moss inhabiting beetles is determined both by geographical isolation processes and, to a lesser degree, by environmental variation across altitudinal gradients. This confirms that the greater relevance of geographical isolation is a common pattern in organisms with limited dispersal ability. Beetle abundance was not significantly related to either the volume of moss or the substrate. Despite being not significant (but close to), the observed trend was to higher beetle abundance in moss cushions collected on trees than in those collected on soil/rock. This may be resulting from the greater diversity of fungi and higher number of beetle fungivores associated with tree growing moss communities.

Diabrotica undecimpunctata is a multivoltine polyphagous beetle species that has long been documented as a significant agricultural pest throughout its native range in North America. This beetle can vector bacterial and viral plant pathogens that result in major losses to crops such as cucumber and soybean. Many countries outside the Americas treat D. undecimpunctata as a species of quarantine importance, while in the USA only the subspecies D. u. duodecimnotata is subject to quarantine, to prevent introduction from Mexico. Identification of D. undecimpunctata on the basis of morphology alone can be complicated given the use of conflicting characters in the description of some subspecific taxa. To better understand relationships among D. undecimpunctata subspecies and other related species, we sequenced mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase 1 (CO1) and nuclear internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) DNA from individuals in different subspecific taxa and across different parts of the species range using museum samples and interceptions. When our data were combined with publicly available Diabrotica data, no pattern of divergence consistent with the currently recognized subspecific designations was found. In addition, we compared phylogenetic patterns in CO1 data from the congener D. virgifera to demonstrate the utility of mitochondrial data in resolving subspecies. From the CO1 data, a diagnostic real-time PCR assay was developed that could successfully identify all haplotypes within the large D. undecimpunctata clade for use in surveys and identification at ports of entry. These findings underscore the need to resolve molecular and morphological datasets into cogent, lineage-based groupings. Such efforts will provide an evolutionary context for the study of agriculturally important attributes of Diabrotica such as host preferences, xenobiotic metabolism, and natural and anthropogenic patterns of dispersal.

Flea beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) of the genus Phyllotreta are major pests of cole crops, canola, and related crops in the mustard family (Brassicaceae). Adults may damage seedlings or larger crop plants, impairing crop growth, rendering crops unmarketable, or killing seedlings outright. The two major North American crucifer pest species, Phyllotreta striolata (F.) and Phyllotreta cruciferae (Goeze), have male-produced pheromones attractive to both female and male adults. We tested the racemic synthetic pheromones, himachaladiene and hydroxyhimachalanone, as well as the host-plant-produced allyl isothiocyanate, alone and in combination, with experimental trapping in Maryland, Virginia, and North Dakota, using clear and yellow sticky traps and the ground-based ‘rocket’ trap (modified from boll weevil trap). Phyllotreta striolata was consistently attracted to the hydroxyketone, and captures were often enhanced by allyl isothiocyanate (AITC), but its response to pheromones, AITC, and trap color were variable from state to state. Phyllotreta cruciferae was strongly attracted to AITC, but its response to pheromone components varied by state, and this species was found rarely at the Maryland site. Phyllotreta bipustulata (F.) was attracted to the diene component, a new finding for this species. Several other genera of flea beetles were captured, some showing response to the semiochemicals and/or color. Results will be helpful in monitoring and possibly population suppression; however, further research is necessary to develop more efficient syntheses, optimal lure loadings, combinations, and controlled release methods.

Two new genera of flea beetles are described and illustrated: Brasilplatus Oliveira, Linzmeier & Konstantinov new genus, monotypic, type species B. bahianus Oliveira, Linzmeier & Konstantinov new species, and Tupiniquim Linzmeier, Oliveira & Konstantinov new genus, containing two species, T. pronotalis Linzmeier, Oliveira & Konstantinov new species and T. confusa Linzmeier, Oliveira & Konstantinov new species and type species of the genus. These are the first described genera of flea beetles inhabiting leaf litter in Brazil. Brasilplatus belongs to the subtribe Monoplatina and is compared to other Monoplatina genera known to occur in leaf litter or moss cushions: Andersonaltica Linzmeier & Konstantinov, 2012, Apleuraltica Bechyné, 1956 and Ulrica Scherer, 1962. Tupiniquim is unique among New World flea beetles, it allies cannot be immediately identified. Here it is compared to several New World and Old World genera.

The species name Cangshanaltica fuanensis, previously published in Ruan et al. (2020), is invalid. In this paper, we described Cangshanaltica fuanensis sp. nov. from Fujian, China in order to fully meet the criteria for the publication of a new species according to the Amendment of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (2012).

West Indian genera of the flea beetle subtribe Oedionychina Chapuis, 1875 are reviewed. Two new genera and one new species are described: Argusonychis Konstantinov, Van Roie, & Furth gen. nov. with Argusonychis clarki Konstantinov, Van Roie & Furth sp. nov. as the type species (Bahamas); and Ciguapanychis Konstantinov, Van Roie & Furth gen. nov. with Alagoasa bicolor (Linnaeus, 1767) as the type species (Puerto Rico). An illustrated key to the genera found in the West Indies is provided. Each genus is illustrated with images of external and internal morphology, including thoracic structures, metendosternite, and female and male genitalia. Asphaera subfasciata Clark, 1860 is designated as the type species for Asphaera Duponchel & Chevrolat in d’Orbigny, 1842. The genus Ptena Chevrolat, 1836 is considered a long-overlooked senior synonym of Asphaera; the use of Asphaera is maintained. The lectotypes are designated for: Chrysomela albicollis Fabricius, 1787, Oedionychis crucipennis Suffrian, 1868, and Haltica decipiens Klug, 1829. Pleurasphaera Bechyné, 1958 is recognized as an objective junior synonym of Litosonycha Chevrolat, 1836 since these two generic names share the same type species, Haltica decipiens Klug, 1829. Oedionychis punctipennis Blake, 1971 is synonymized with Alagoasa sharpi (Jacoby, 1897). The following 17 new combinations are proposed: Alagoasa lunata (Fabricius, 1801), Alagoasa sharpi (Jacoby, 1897), Alagoasa smithi (Jacoby, 1897), Argusonychis megalopia (Blake, 1939), Argusonychis orientensis (Blake, 1959), Argusonychis zayasi (Blake, 1959), Asphaera amplilimbata (Blake, 1959), Asphaera cristalensis (Blake, 1959), Ciguapanychis bicolor (Linnaeus, 1767), Ciguapanychis dimidiatus (Olivier, 1808), Ciguapanychis fasciatus (Fabricius, 1798), Ciguapanychis jamaicensis (Jacoby, 1894), Ciguapanychis pseudofasciatus (Blake, 1940), Ciguapanychis viridipennis (Blake, 1971), Kuschelina pseudothoracica (Blake, 1945), Omophoita turquino (Zayas, 1988), and Walterianella gurneyi (Blake, 1968). The following three species are removed from synonymy and restored to species status as new combinations: Ciguapanychis cinctus (Olivier, 1808), Ciguapanychis lantanus (Blake, 1928), and Ciguapanychis purpurellus (Blake, 1940).

Blakealtica fusca a new genus and new species from the Dominican Republic is described and illustrated. In addition to external features, beetle thoracic sclerites (including metendosternite) are fully examined and illustrated. Blakealtica is similar to Monomacra Chevrolat,1836 and related genera (Disonycha Chevrolat, 1836, Hemilactica Blake, 1937, Myrmeconycha Konstantinov & Tishechkin, 2017, Parchicola Bechyne & Bechyne, 1975, Pseudodisonycha Blake, 1954, and Rosalactica Bechyne & Bechyne, 1977) as all studied representatives of these genera are missing the sclerotized vaginal palpi or have them membranous and otherwise poorly developed. This feature may be unique for the Monomacra group of genera as it has not been seen anywhere else in flea beetles.

Two new species of bryobiont flea beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Galerucinae: Alticini) from Dominican Republic are described and illustrated: Andersonaltica neiba sp. nov. (Sierra de Neiba) and A. villabarrancoli sp. nov. (Sierra de Baoruco). New species are compared morphologically with each other. Unusual intraspecific variability of A. villabarrancoli is reported. To obtain additional data in understanding the similarities between the specimens of A. villabarrancoli, we sequenced the Cytochrome oxidase I barcode region of adults and larvae. In all cases, the sequences are identical suggesting that the specimens in questions are conspecific. New genus Suffrianaltica gen. nov. is described to accommodate Chaetocnema tuberculata (Suffrian, 1868). It is illustrated and compared to Apraea Baly, 1877, Glyptina LeConte, 1859, and Guadeloupena Bechyne, 1956 and their distinguishing characters are illustrated. Twenty-three observations of leaf beetles and their feeding damage are reported. Masquerade is found in 15 observations. In 12 observations dark colored beetles were making obvious dark colored damage. Light colored beetles of three species were observed making light colored damage. Masquerade in Chrysomelinae is reported here for the first time. In Galerucinae, masquerade is recorded for the first time for the species of Calomicrus Stephens and Orthocrepis Weise. New host plants are recorded for: Longitarsus hittita Biondi - Anchusa azurea Mill.; Longitarsus audisioi Biondi - Symphytum asperum Lepech.; and Chaetocnema tibialis (Illiger) - Chenopodium rubrum L.

1. The herbivorous flea beetles (Chrysomelidae: Alticini) have evolved a masquerading strategy by hiding among their own feeding damage. Similarities between beetle bodies and their feeding damage may act as a defence that reduces detection by visual predators. 2. We analyse the evolutionary origin of flea beetles' camouflage using the French fauna (284 species) as a case study. We assess two competing hypotheses: (H1) the type of leaf tissue is the primary determinant of the colour and size of beetle species feeding on them, because each type of leaf tissue may have a tendency to result in a particular type of damage or, (H2) the morphological characteristics of the beetle explain the damage pattern, because beetle species evolve strategies to produce feeding damage that matches its own characteristics. 3. We assessed bipartite networks of feeding interactions (beetle species and host plants). Beetle-host interactions were non-randomly distributed and highly modular, with more than 25% of the network modules showing beetle colour and size distributions significantly different from null expectations. 4. Our results suggest that the evolutionary origin of flea beetles masquerading can be partially explained by both hypotheses. Some host plants seem to restrict feeding damage appearance on their leaves, favouring the survival of specific beetles with matching colour and size (H1). A new species of previously monotypic genus of flea beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Galerucinae: Alticini), Bonfilsus Scherer 1967, is described from the Dominican Republic. This is the first record of Bonfilsus from the island of Hispaniola. The new species is compared to the only known species of the genus [B. subpubenscens (Bechyne)] and its distinguishing features as well as other morphological characters are illustrated and described.

The West Indian flea beetle genus Hemilactica Blake, 1937 is reviewed. Two new species, both from the Dominican Republic are described and illustrated: H. erwinisp. nov. and H. sierramatringarciasp. nov. In addition, images of the holotypes of H. portoricensis Blake, H. pulchella Blake, and H. rugosa Blake are provided. Lactica megaspila (Blake) is transferred to Hemilactica. A lectotype of H. quatuordecimpunctata (Suffrian, 1868) is designated and illustrated, and a key to the Hemilactica species and a key for identification of Hemilactica and related genera occurring in the Western Hemisphere are provided.

The biology of the moss and leaf litter inhabiting flea beetles is poorly understood. In this study, a new species of moss-eating flea beetles Cangshanaltica fuanensis sp. nov. is described, the morphology of adult and immature stages is examined and illustrated. Its life history and biology are studied. The remarkable and unique biological features are revealed: (1) females deposit one large egg at a time, egg length equals 0.4&ndash, 0.5 times the female body length, these are unusual in Chrysomelidae, (2) females have only two ovarioles on each side of the ovary, which has not been reported in other Chrysomelidae species, (3) females lay and hide each egg under a spoon-shaped moss leaf, (4) cannibalism of a second instar larva on an egg was observed. Both adults and larvae feed on moss and are polyphagous, their feces mainly consist of un-digested moss fragments, high humidity is essential for the survival of eggs and larvae and expedites the hatching. In addition, a modified fan-driven Berlese funnel is designed for faster extraction of moss inhabiting flea beetles. This device could also be used for collecting other ground-dwelling arthropods. Its working diagram is illustrated and described.

Menudos Linzmeier & Konstantinov, a new genus of moss inhabiting flea beetles, containing five species, three of them are new (M. illariosus, M. maricao, and M. toronegro—the type species of the genus), from Puerto Rico is described and illustrated. The new genus is compared to Aedmon Clark, Apleuraltica Bechyne, Andersonaltica Linzmeier & Konstantinov, Distigmoptera Blake and Ulrica Scherer. Aedmon barberi (Blake, 1943b) and Distigmoptera chamorrae Konstantinov & Konstantinova, 2011 are transferred to Menudos. A key to Menudos species identification is provided. Methods for collecting moss inhabiting flea beetles and other arthropods are described in detail for the first time.

Flea beetles (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae, Galerucinae, Alticini) are a hyperdiverse group of organisms with approximately 9900 species worldwide. In addition to walking as most insects do, nearly all the species of flea beetles have an ability to jump and this ability is commonly understood as one of the key adaptations responsible for its diversity. Our investigation of flea beetle jumping is based on high-speed filming, micro-CT scans and 3D reconstructions, and provides a mechanical description of the jump. We reveal that the flea beetle jumping mechanism is a catapult in nature and is enabled by a small structure in the hind femur called an ‘elastic plate’ which powers the explosive jump and protects other structures from potential injury. The explosive catapult jump of flea beetles involves a unique ‘high-efficiency mechanism’ and ‘positive feedback mechanism’. As this catapult mechanism could inspire the design of bionic jumping limbs, we provide a preliminary design for a robotic jumping leg, which could be a resource for the bionics industry.

The following new species of Ivalia Jacoby 1887 are described from the mount Kinabalu (Sabah, Malaysia): Ivalia besar sp. nov. , I. biasa sp. nov. , I. fulvomaculata sp. nov. , I. haruka sp. nov. , I. marginata sp. nov. , I. minutissima sp. nov. , I. nigrofasciata sp. nov. , I. pseudostriolata sp. nov. , I. rubrorbiculata sp. nov. , I. striolata sp. nov. .

Two new genera: Baoshanaltica gen. n. and Sinosphaera gen. n., and two new species: Baoshanaltica minuta sp. n. and Sinosphaera aptera sp. n. from south-west China are described and illustrated. Baoshanaltica is compared to the allied moss-inhabiting genera Cangshanaltica Konstantinov et al. and Phaelota Jacoby, in addition to Minota Kutschera. Sinosphaera is compared to Sphaeroderma Stephens, Omeisphaera Chen & Zia, Jacobyana Maulik, and Kamala Maulik.

A new genus of flea beetles (Allenaltica gen. nov.) with a new species, Allenaltica flavicornis, sp. nov. from the Philippine Islands (Mindanao) is described, illustrated and compared with related genera.

A new species of flea beetle genus Phyllotreta Chevrolat, 1836 (P. sholaksori new species) is described from shores of saline lakes in Southwestern Siberia. It is compared with species with which it was collected as well as with species comprising a group to which it belongs (P. araxicola Jablokoff-Khnzorian, 1968, P. astrachanica Lopatin, 1977, P. atra Fabricius, 1775, P. balcanica Heikertinger, 1909, P. cruciferae Goeze, 1777, and P. diademata Fourdas, 1860). All these species are illustrated and included in the key.

Menispermaceae are newly reported as the host plants of the genus.

Camouflaged objects are harder to detect if the background itself is more heterogeneous, and search becomes increasingly inefficient when the scene contains multiple items resembling the target. Some adult leaf beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) with highly specialized habits make holes on host plant leaves while feeding. We propose that leaf beetles camouflage themselves with their feeding holes. The presence of holes makes predators' visual search harder, thus giving beetles more time to escape from the leaf surface either by jumping (Galerucinae: Alticini) or rolling (rest of Chrysomelidae). Based on behavioral observations and analysis of 25 photographs of feeding leaf beetles (15 species), we demonstrate that adult leaf beetles camouflage themselves by creating holes of uniform size, approximately half of the beetle body size. Observation of the feeding behavior and anatomy of a typical hole-feeding beetle (Altica cirsicola) showed that the foregut volume and head-prothorax mobility of beetles are the two major factors that constrain the hole size. A computer-simulated visual search test showed that the greater the number of holes, and the more each hole approached beetle body size, the longer it took humans (as models) to locate a beetle on a leaf. This study reports a newly discovered kind of camouflage, hole-feeding camouflage, in leaf beetles, which makes visual detection or recognition more difficult by changing the environmental background. This type of camouflage may open up a range of new possibilities for studies in animal cognition analysis and evolution of anti-predation defenses.

The flea beetle genus Meishania Chen & Wang is revised and five new species—M. cangshanensis sp. nov., M. flavipennis sp. nov., M. fulvotigera sp. nov., and M. sichuanica sp. nov. from China and M. bhutanensis sp. nov. from Bhutan—are described. All species of Meishania are illustrated and a key to species is provided.

Discovery of the holotype of Aulacothorax exilis Boheman, 1858, originally described in Scydmaeninae (Staphylinidae), in the collections of Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet Stockholm in Sweden revealed that this species is actually a leaf beetle (Chrysomelidae) belonging to the genus until now known as Orthaltica Crotch, 1873. Because Aulacothorax has been available since 1858 and Orthaltica only since 1873, we here synonymize Orthaltica with Aulacothorax. Aulacothorax exilis is redescribed and illustrated.

The Oriental genus Burumoseria Csiki, 1939 is redescribed. Burumoseria yuae Lee and Konstantinov, new species from Taiwan is described and illustrated. A key to Burumoseria species is provided. The Oriental and Australian genus Licyllus Jacoby, 1885 is synonymized with Thrasychroma Jacoby, 1885.

In order to investigate the effect of switching the transmission modes on the rate of reception and transmission of useful information in the LTE-Advanced network, it is necessary to estimate in real time the degree of the contribution of the specified process to the overall degradation of the channel capacity at each instant of time. A key parameter affecting the maximum achievable data reception and transmission rate in a channel of a given width and at the maximum permissible transmitter power is the signal-to-noise ratio in the channel, therefore it is extremely important to estimate the noise contribution of the switching process. To do this, it is first necessary to understand what real noise contribution the measurement system makes, the obligatory element of which is the radio frequency spectrum analyzer. In order to solve this problem, the method of determining the noise factor of the spectrum analyzer in real test conditions is considered and analyzed in this article.

A new genus, Stevenaltica, with two new species, S. normi and S. erronis, from Bolivia is described and illustrated. It is similar to Exoceras Jacoby. An identification key for all flea beetle genera known to occur in mosses in the Western Hemisphere is provided.

A flea beetle, Distigmoptera borealisBlake, 1943, is documented for the first time to feed on liverworts, Reboulia hemisphaerica (L.) Raddi (Aytoniaceae), and moss, Weissia controversa Hedw. (Pottiaceae). This is the first and only known bryobiont leaf beetle in the USA and Nearctic biogeographic region. The adult of D. borealis is redescribed and illustrated, and the larva and pupa of D. borealis are described and illustrated for the first time.

Behavioural novelties observed in adult leaf beetles of two new Orthaltica Crotch species include: 1) the use of low cost leaf-hole shelters, either in pre-formed holes produced by larger beetles that fed on the same leaf, or artificially created holes as part of an experiment; and 2) the use of faeces to partition the hole. Two new southern Indian species of the genus Orthaltica are described and illustrated: O. syzygium and O. terminalia. Host plants are identified for both species. A key to the Indian species of Orthaltica is provided.
