Introduction: the high prevalence of knee osteoarthritis and its impact on the musculoskeletal system and the quality of life justify the importance in the development of research on treatment strategies for this clinical condition. Objective: the goal was to conduct a literature review study on the effects of aquatic physical therapy on pain, functional ability and quality of life in older people with knee osteoarthritis. Methods: this is a 2010 literature review 2015, through survey of scientific articles in electronic databases the CAPES portal. Therefore, the following keywords were used: hydrotherapy, pain, range of motion joint, quality of life, older people, osteoarthritis and similar in Portuguese. Results: ten were found complete scientific articles of clinical trials, whose themes were related to the variables of interest in this study. Conclusion: based on the selected scientific literature, it is concluded that aquatic therapy is an important physical therapy resource for the management of chronic pain and improved functional fitness and maintaining quality of life in older adults with knee osteoarthritis. Introdução: A capacidade funcional é definida como a habilidade física e mental do indivíduo em manter seu autocuidado de forma a preservar sua autonomia e independência na realização de suas atividades cotidianas. A hidroterapia é uma atividade física que tem sido utilizada como recurso para tratar doenças reumáticas, ortopédicas e neurológicas. Objetivo: Este estudo tem por objetivo avaliar a capacidade funcional de idosos fazendo uso do Teste Funcional de Mobilidade \"Time Up and Go (TUG)\" além de traçar o perfil dos idosos participantes do estudo e comparar os resultados obtidos na pré e pós-intervenção fisioterápica em ambiente aquático. Métodos: Estudo experimental e prospectivo. Foram sujeitos para o estudo 36 idosos, com média de idade de 70,4 anos, divididos em Grupo Ativo (25 idosos) e Grupo Controle (11 idosos). O primeiro foi exposto a um trabalho funcional aquático e o segundo não houve intervenção terapêutica. Todos foram avaliados individualmente, o Grupo Ativo foi encaminhado ao trabalho fisioterápico (três vezes por semana, em dias alternados, com duração de uma hora, no período vespertino e constituído por três etapas distintas: adaptação ao meio aquático, alongamento e exercícios para equilíbrio estáticos e dinâmicos). O segundo grupo orientado com relação à importância de ser denominado controle recebendo somente instruções básicas. Resultados parciais: Pode-se observar uma melhora significativa dos valores referentes ao teste funcional TUG nos indivíduos expostos ao grupo ativo, com somente duas exceções. Por outro lado, o grupo controle, apresentou resultados contrários ao grupo ativo. Conclusão: Em síntese, a execução dos exercícios aquáticos trouxeram vários benefícios funcionais, observado na reavaliação do grupo ativo, preservando a autonomia e independência na realização das atividades cotidianas dos idosos promovendo qualidade de vida. Introduction: Peripheral nerve injuries are common and can lead to functional disabilities. Thus, studies suggest seek surgical and post-surgical treatment protocols to minimize this frame, reinervado and improve muscle functionality. The atrophy of the muscular fibers occurs depending on the time of axonal regeneration, as with electrostimulation atrophy would be minimized, inducing tissue repair and increasing muscular strength. Objective: To investigate The efficiency of electric stimulation through the Russian Current after end-to-side neurorrhaphy in the repair morphological of the common peroneal nerve in rats. Methods: It were used 40 Wistar rats, males, with 80 days of life, supplied by the Central Animal Facility at the University of the Sacred Heart (USC) (Protocol: 25/14). The animals were randomly divided into five groups of 8 animals each. Initial Control Group (GCI), Final Control Group (GCF), Denervated group (GD), Experimental Group Untreated (GENT), End-to-Side Neurorrhaphy with Russian Stimulation Group (GER). Functional evaluations of all five groups were conducted, comparing them between them. Results: The results of the analysis of the Sciatic Functional Index (SFI) showed that the GER group (-22.12±3.20) showed statistically greater difference when compared to GENT (-25.84±3.71) and, the results of electrophysiological tests showed that GER and GENT statistically greater differences in relation to the average of the results of both the amplitude (mV), 9.04±2.50 and 6.68±0.63, the latency (ms), 2.11±0.16 and 2.11±0.05, respectively. Introduction: when injured peripheral nerves can lead to a high loss of function for the patient. So many studies seek to propose techniques to accelerate functional recovery of a reinervado muscle. Thus, with the discovery of neurorraphy end-toside (NTL), without injury to the donor nerve, brought great contribution because any nerve can be used as donor nerve without damage to this or to the structures innervated by it. However, even with all technical refinement after neurorrhaphy, the time for axonal regeneration determine muscle fiber atrophy. In this context, electrostimulation have been proposed to accelerate the regenerative process, and minimize the functional losses. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of electrical stimulation with Russian current in morphological repair peroneal nerve of rats after end-side neurorraphy. Methodology: we used 50 Wistar rats, males, with 80 days of life, supplied by the Central Vivarium of Sacred Heart University (USC). The animals were randomly divided into five groups: Start Control Group (ICG), Control Group Final (GCF), denervated group (GD) Surgical Control Group (GCC), neurorrhaphy Group Finish-Side with Russian stimulation (GNTLER). Morphometric analyzes were performed nervous tissue of the rats from all five groups by comparing the nerve regeneration across the groups. Results: the GNTLER group showed a statistically significant difference when compared to GCC group associated to the average of the areas of nerve fibers (21.38 µm²/16.00 µm²) and myelin sheaths (14.23 µm²/10.32 µm²). The GNTLER and GCC groups showed no difference in the functional gait analysis. Conclusion: Based on the methodology employed can be concluded that there was improved axonal regeneration and myelination of nerve fibers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
