N-(diisopropylphosphanyl)benzamide, PhC(O)NHPiPr2, has been synthesized in good yield following two alternative procedures that employ benzamide as the starting material. The first one is a two-step preparation, in which N-(trimetilsilyl)benzamide is reacted with PiPr2Cl to give the title compound in good yield, whereas the second one is a straightforward synthesis which converts benzamide into N-(diisopropylphosphanyl)benzamide by reaction with PiPr2Cl in the presence of N,N-dimethylpyridin-4-amine (DMAP) and triethylamine. NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analyses have been performed to characterize the new compound and elucidate its molecular structure in the solid state. N-(diisopropylphosphanyl)benzamide adds to the limited family of amido-substituted phosphines, RC(O)NHPR'2, which can be classified as bidentate hybrid P,O-ligands, both in their neutral and anionic forms, the latter achievable by deprotonation of the NH group. Two phosphonite ligands bearing the highly sterically demanding 2,6-bis (2,6-dimethylphenyl)phenyl group (ArXyl2), PArXyl2(OPhNO2)2 and PArXyl2(OPhNO2,Me)2, were prepared from the parent dihalophosphines PArXyl2X2 (X = Cl, Br) and the corresponding phenols, 4-nitrophenol and 4-nitro-2,6-dimethylphenol, respectively. DFT methods were used to examine their structural features and to determine three steric descriptors, namely the Tolman cone angle, the percentage of buried volume, and the percentage of the coordination sphere protected by the ligand. A comparison with the related terphenyl phosphines is also provided. Reactions of PArXyl2(OPhNO2)2 and PArXyl2(OPhNO2,Me)2 with several Pt(II) precursors were investigated, revealing a high tendency of both phosphonites to undergo C-H activation processes and generate five- or six-membered cyclometalated structures. The coordination chemistry of the new ligands was explored with isolation, among others, of three carbonyl complexes, 1-3∙CO, and the triphenylphosphine adduct 3∙PPh3. X-ray diffraction methods permitted the determination of the solid-state structures of the mononuclear methyl carbonyl complex 1∙CO, the dinuclear chloride-bridged complex 2 and the doubly cyclometalated complex 3∙SMe2, including the conformations adopted by the ligands upon coordination. Pt(II) alkylidene 1a has been reacted with terminal alkynes to afford ylide complexes 3a--d, resulting from electrophilic activation of the CuC bond and its insertion into the platinacyclic fragment of 1a that contains the carbene functionality. Transition metal tetrylene complexes offer great opportunities for molecular cooperation due to the ambiphilic character of the group 14 element. Here we focus on the coordination of germylene [(ArMes2)2Ge :] (ArMes=C6H3‐2,6‐(C6H2‐2,4,6‐Me3)2) to [RhCl(COD)]2 (COD=1,5‐cyclooctadiene), which yields a neutral germyl complex in which the rhodium center exhibits both η6‐ and η2‐coordination to two mesityl rings in an unusual pincer‐type structure. Chloride abstraction from this species triggers a singular dehydrogenative double C−H bond activation across the Ge/Rh motif. We have isolated and fully characterized three rhodium‐germyl species associated to three C−H cleavage events along this process. Brands are the most precious intangible companies' assets. Company managers need to know their brand value and the aspects determining it. As no transparent brands market exists, the main objective of this study was to model brand values that the world's main valuation consultants publish. The obtained results indicate that 80% of the value of these brands is accounted for by both the net results of the companies that own brands and their value on the Stock Exchange. These results allow brand values to be estimated using quantitative and objective information by simple methods, unlike those used by valuation consultants. Heavier group 14 element cations exhibit a remarkable reactivity that has typically hampered their isolation. For the few available examples, the role of π‐arene interactions is crucial to provide kinetic stabilization, but dynamic and structural information on those contacts is yet limited. In this study we have accessed the metalogermylenium cation [(PMe2ArDipp2)AuGe(ArDipp2)Cl]+ (4+) (ArDipp2=C6H3‐2,6‐(C6H3‐2,6‐iPr2)2) that has been structurally characterized with three different non‐coordinating counter anions. These studies provide for the first time dynamic information about the conformational rearrangement that characterizes π‐arene bonding thorough a series of X‐ray diffraction structural snapshots. Computational studies reveal the weak character of the π‐arene bonding (ca. 2 kcal mol−1) that can be described as the donation from a πC=C bond toward the empty p valence orbital of germanium. Objectives: First, to determinate the frequency of chorioamnionitis and funisitis in cases of intramniotic detection of Ureaplasma urealyticum. Second, to assess the predictive capability of some biological markers in the amniotic fluid of these women to predict histological inflammation.Subjects and Methods: We prospectively studied 20 cases of women with premature rupture of membranes or preterm labour (PROM) or preterm labour and intraamniotic detection of Ureaplasma urealyticum. Gestational age at admission was 26.74 ± 2.53 weeks. Amniotic fluid concentrations of IL18, IL 2, IL4, IL6, IL10, IL12, TNF-alpha, IFN-g, and MMP-8 were measured by the Multiplex method. Amniotic fluid glucose and leukocyte count were also measured by standard methods. Placental detailed histological studies were performed. Student's t-test, forward stepwise conditional binary logistic regression analysis and ROC curves were used.Results: Histological chorioamnionitis was present in 45% of cases (9/20) and funisitis just in 15% (3/20). Interleukins 6, 8, 12, MMP-8, and leukocyte count were significantly elevated in cases of histological inflammation, defined as choriamnionitis or chorioamniotis + funisitis (p = .007, .03, .01, .03, .03, respectively) while glucose was decreased (p = .04). Binary logistic regression for the prediction of inflammation showed a high predictive value (R2 = .66, p = .002) including in the equation only the IL6 value.Conclusions: A significant percentage of cases with intraamniotic detection of Ureaplasma urealyticum shows no pathological signs of histological inflammation. Concentration of Interleukin 6 in amniotic fluid can be useful for the diagnosis of subclinical chorioamnionitis in these cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A series of boronic acid derived salicylidenehydrazone (BASHY) complexes was prepared and photophysically characterized. The dye platform can be modified by (a) electronic tuning along the cyanine-type axis via modification of the donor-acceptor pair and (b) functional tuning via the boronic acid residue. On the one hand, approach (a) allows the control of photophysical parameters such as Stokes shift, emission color, and two-photon-absorption (2PA) cross section. The resulting dyes show emission light-up behavior in nonpolar media and are characterized by high fluorescence quantum yields (ca. 0.5-0.7) and brightness (ca. 35000-40000 M-1 cm-1). Moreover, the 2PA cross sections reach values in the order of 200-300 GM. On the other hand, the variation of the dye structure through the boronic acid derived moiety (approach (b)) enables the functionalization of the BASHY platform for a broad spectrum of potential applications, ranging from biorelevant contexts to optoelectronic materials. Importantly, this functionalization is generally electronically orthogonal with respect to the dye's photophysical properties, which are only determined by the electronic structure of the cyanine-type backbone (approach (a)). Rare exceptions to this generalization are the presence of redox-active residues (such a triphenylamine or pyrene). Six strongly fluorescent four-coordinate organoboron N,C chelates containing an aryl isoquinoline skeleton were prepared. Remarkably, the fluorescence quantum yields reach values of up to 0.74 in oxygen-free toluene. The strong BN interaction was corroborated by the single-crystal X-ray analysis of two dyes. The intramolecular charge-transfer character of the fluorophores was evidenced by solvatochromism studies and time-dependent DFT calculations at the PCM(toluene)/CAM-B3LYP/6-311++G(2d,p)//PCM(toluene)/B3LYP/6-311G(2d,p) level of theory. The compounds combine high chemical stability with high photostability, especially when equipped with electron-donating substituents. The strong fluorescence and the large Stokes shifts predestine these compounds for use in confocal fluorescence microscopy. This was demonstrated for the imaging of the N13 mouse microglial cell line. Moreover, significant two-photon absorption cross sections (up to 61 GM) allow the use of excitation wavelengths in the near-infrared region (>800 nm). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The shrimp Rimicaris exoculata dominates the fauna in deep-sea hydrothermal vent sites along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (depth, 2,320 m). Here, we identified and biochemically characterized three carboxyl esterases from microbial communities inhabiting the R. exoculata gill that were isolated by naive screens of a gill chamber metagenomic library. These proteins exhibit low to moderate identity to known esterase sequences (≤52%) and to each other (11.9 to 63.7%) and appear to have originated from unknown species or from genera of Proteobacteria related to Thiothrix/Leucothrix (MGS-RG1/RG2) and to the Rhodobacteraceae group (MGS-RG3). A library of 131 esters and 31 additional esterase/lipase preparations was used to evaluate the activity profiles of these enzymes. All 3 of these enzymes had greater esterase than lipase activity and exhibited specific activities with ester substrates (≤356Umg-1) in the range of similar enzymes. MGS-RG3 was inhibited by salts and pressure and had a low optimal temperature (30°C), and its substrate profile clustered within a group of low-activity and substrate-restricted marine enzymes. In contrast, MGS-RG1 and MGS-RG2 were most active at 45 to 50°C and were salt activated and barotolerant. They also exhibited wider substrate profiles that were close to those of highly active promiscuous enzymes from a marine hydrothermal vent (MGS-RG2) and from a cold brackish lake (MGS-RG1). The data presented are discussed in the context of promoting the examination of enzyme activities of taxa found in habitats that have been neglected for enzyme prospecting; the enzymes found in these taxa may reflect distinct habitat-specific adaptations and may constitute new sources of rare reaction specificities. The present study provides a deeper view of protein functionality as a function of temperature, salt and pressure in deep-sea habitats. A set of eight different enzymes from five distinct deep-sea (3040-4908 m depth), moderately warm (14.0-16.5°C) biotopes, characterized by a wide range of salinities (39-348 practical salinity units), were investigated for this purpose. An enzyme from a 'superficial' marine hydrothermal habitat (65°C) was isolated and characterized for comparative purposes. We report here the first experimental evidence suggesting that in saltsaturated deep-sea habitats, the adaptation to high pressure is linked to high thermal resistance (P value = 0.0036). Salinity might therefore increase the temperature window for enzyme activity, and possibly microbial growth, in deep-sea habitats. As an example, Lake Medee, the largest hypersaline deepsea anoxic lake of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, where the water temperature is never higher than 16°C, was shown to contain halopiezophilic-like enzymes that are most active at 70°C and with denaturing temperatures of 71.4°C. The determination of the crystal structures of five proteins revealed unknown molecular mechanisms involved in protein adaptation to poly-extremes as well as distinct active site architectures and substrate preferences relative to other structurally characterized enzymes. Several members of the C-C MCP (meta-cleavage product) hydrolase family demonstrate an unusual ability to hydrolyse esters as well as the MCPs (including those from monoand bi-cyclic aromatics). Although the molecular mechanisms responsible for such substrate promiscuity are starting to emerge, the full understanding of these complex enzymes is far from complete. In the present paper, we describe six distinct α/β hydrolases identified through genomic approaches, four of which demonstrate the unprecedented characteristic of activity towards a broad spectrum of substrates, including p-nitrophenyl, halogenated, fatty acyl, aryl, glycerol, cinnamoyl and carbohydrate esters, lactones, 2-hydroxy-6-oxo-6-phenylhexa-2,4-dienoate and 2-hydroxy-6-oxohepta-2,4-dienoate. Using structural analysis and site-directed mutagenesiswe have identified the three residues (Ser32, Val130 and Trp144) that determine the unusual substrate specificity of one of these proteins, CCSP0084. The esterases and lipases from the α/β hydrolase superfamily exhibit an enormous sequence diversity, fold plasticity, and activities. Here, we present the comprehensive sequence and biochemical analyses of seven distinct esterases and lipases from the metagenome of Lake Arreo, an evaporite karstic lake in Spain (42°46′N, 2°59′W; altitude, 655 m). Together with oligonucleotide usage patterns and BLASTP analysis, our study of esterases/lipases mined from Lake Arreo suggests that its sediment contains moderately halophilic and cold-adapted proteobacteria containing DNA fragments of distantly related plasmids or chromosomal genomic islands of plasmid and phage origins. This metagenome encodes esterases/lipases with broad substrate profiles (tested over a set of 101 structurally diverse esters) and habitat-specific characteristics, as they exhibit maximal activity at alkaline pH (8.0 to 8.5) and temperature of 16 to 40°C, and they are stimulated (1.5 to 2.2 times) by chloride ions (0.1 to 1.2 M), reflecting an adaptation to environmental conditions. Our work provides further insights into the potential significance of the Lake Arreo esterases/lipases for biotechnology processes (i.e., production of enantiomers and sugar esters), because these enzymes are salt tolerant and are active at low temperatures and against a broad range of substrates. As an example, the ability of a single protein to hydrolyze triacylglycerols, (non)halogenated alkyl and aryl esters, cinnamoyl and carbohydrate esters, lactones, and chiral epoxides to a similar extent was demonstrated. Recent studies have indicated the existence of an extensive trans-genomic trans-mural co-metabolism between gut microbes and animal hosts that is diet-, host phylogeny- and provenance-influenced. Here, we analyzed the biodiversity at the level of small subunit rRNA gene sequence and the metabolic composition of 18 Mbp of consensus metagenome sequences and activity characteristics of bacterial intra-cellular extracts, in wild Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) fecal samples. Bacterial signatures (14.43% of all of the Firmicutes reads and 6.36% of total reads) related to the uncultured anaerobic commensals Anaeroplasma spp., which are typically found in ovine and bovine rumen, were first identified. The lynx gut was further characterized by an over-representation of 'presumptive' aquaporin aqpZ genes and genes encoding 'active' lysosomal-like digestive enzymes that are possibly needed to acquire glycerol, sugars and amino acids from glycoproteins, glyco(amino)lipids, glyco(amino)glycans and nucleoside diphosphate sugars. Lynx gut was highly enriched (28% of the total glycosidases) in genes encoding α-amylase and related enzymes, although it exhibited low rate of enzymatic activity indicative of starch degradation. The preponderance of β-xylosidase activity in protein extracts further suggests lynx gut microbes being most active for the metabolism of β-xylose containing plant N-glycans, although β-xylosidases sequences constituted only 1.5% of total glycosidases. These collective and unique bacterial, genetic and enzymatic activity signatures suggest that the wild lynx gut microbiota not only harbors gene sets underpinning sugar uptake from primary animal tissues (with the monotypic dietary profile of the wild lynx consisting of 80-100% wild rabbits) but also for the hydrolysis of prey-derived plant biomass. Although, the present investigation corresponds to a single sample and some of the statements should be considered qualitative, the data most likely suggests a tighter, more coordinated and complex evolutionary and nutritional ecology scenario of carnivore gut microbial communities than has been previously assumed. Abstract: Biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP), a mixture of hydroxyapatite (HA) and β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP), has attracted attention as an excellent bone graft substitute. Mixtures of ceramics with agarose, as natural biodegradable binder, have been recently performed in order to increase the flexibility of the ceramic component and to facilitate the biomaterial preparation. In previous studies we have evaluated the response of both L929 fibroblasts and Saos-2 osteoblasts to hydroxyapatite–βTCP/agarose disks observing a higher sensitivity of osteoblasts to this biomaterial. In the present study, the use of specific fluorescent probes and antibodies has allowed to evaluate different cell function parameters as biocompatibility markers for the cell/biomaterial interaction of Saos-2 osteoblasts cultured for 7 days on hydroxyapatite–βTCP/agarose disks. The cell cycle subG 1 fraction, the exposition of phosphatidylserine on the outside surface of the plasma membrane and the analysis of plasma membrane integrity versus cell size, indicate that the interaction with the biomaterial induces a light increase of apoptosis in osteoblasts without producing cell necrosis. The high percentage of viable cells on the biomaterial and the preservation of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) expression, eNOS activity and mitochondrial membrane potential (Δψm), demonstrate the good biocompatibility of hydroxyapatite–βTCP/agarose disks and its potential utility for bone substitution and repair. Metal‐only Lewis pairs (MOLPs) in which the two metal fragments are solely connected by a dative M→M bond represent privileged architectures to acquire fundamental understanding of bimetallic bonding. This has important implications in many catalytic processes or supramolecular systems that rely on synergistic effects between two metals. However, a systematic experimental/computational approach on a well‐defined class of compounds is lacking. Here we report a family of MOLPs constructed around the RhI precursor [(η5‐C5Me5)Rh(PMe3)2] (1) with a series of s, p and d‐block metals, mostly from the main group elements, and investigate their bonding by computational means. Among the new MOLPs, we have structurally characterized those formed by dative bonding between 1 and MgMeBr, AlMe3, GeCl2, SnCl2, ZnMe2 and Zn(C6F5)2, as well as spectroscopically identified the ones resulting from coordination to MBArF (M=Na, Li; BArF−=[B(C6H2‐3,5‐(CF3)2)4]−) and CuCl. Some of these compounds represent unique examples of bimetallic structures, such as the first unambiguous cases of Rh→Mg dative bonding or base‐free rhodium bound germylene and stannylene species. Multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, including 103Rh NMR, is used to probe the formation of Rh→M bonds. A comprehensive theoretical analysis of those provides clear trends. As anticipated, greater bond covalency is found for the more electronegative acids, whereas ionic character dominates for the least electronegative nuclei, though some degree of electron sharing is identified in all cases. The stereoelectronic properties of a series of sterically hindered phosphines containing a terphenyl substituent, PR 2 Ar' (R = alkyl; Ar' = C 6 H 3 -2,6-Ar 2), have been evaluated by various methods. Their σ-donating capacity has been assessed on the basis of the carbon monoxide stretching frequencies in benchmark iridium [IrCl(CO) 2 (PR 2 Ar')] and rhodium [Rh(acac)(CO) 2 (PR 2 Ar')] (acac = acetylacetonate) complexes, as well as by measuring 31P–77Se scalar coupling constants (1 J SeP) for the corresponding phosphine selenides (Se=PR 2 Ar'). In turn, the steric profile of terphenyl phosphines has been gauged by calculating Tolman Cone Angle (TCA), ligand shielding (G) and percent buried volume (%V Bur) parameters. These calculations have been carried out from both X-ray diffraction and DFT-optimized structures. We have also examined several of the widely used biaryl phosphines for comparative purposes. Energy transfer cassettes that build on the platform of boronic acid derived salicylidenehydrazone (BASHY) complexes were prepared. The functional flexibility of the BASHY chromophore was underpinned by its tunable role as energy donor or acceptor, integrated in compact and non‐conjugated bichromophoric dyads. The energy transfer is highly efficient (ΦET>0.95) and is assumed to proceed mainly via a through‐bond mechanism. Both constituent chromophores benefit mutually from their integration in the cassettes: a) The pseudo Stokes shift is increased to 110–200 nm; b) the antenna (donor) chromophore improves the light absorption of the acceptor chromophore; and c) the emission window of the BASHY chromophore is expanded in the BASHY‐Bodipy dye without using strategies that compromise the observation of high quantum yields. The application of the cassettes for the formulation of fluorescent polymeric nanoparticles, that can be internalized in cells and observed by fluorescence imaging, was demonstrated using the BASHY‐Bodipy dye as an example. The voltammetry of immobilized microparticles (VIMP) was used to characterize organosulfur components from ovens found at the Spanish archaeological sites of Cueva de Nerja (ca. 35,000 cal BC), la Illeta dels Banyets (4th century BCE) and Gestalgar (12th–13th CE), and asphalt probes subjected to PAV and SUNTEST aging protocols. The voltammetric responses of the archaeological samples and the asphalt probes after photodegradation were quite similar, indicating the presence of polythiophene components which could act as age/degradation markers. Fetal echocardiography has limited prognostic ability in the evaluation of left-sided congenital heart defects (left heart defects). Cord blood cardiovascular biomarkers could improve the prognostic evaluation of left heart defects. A multicenter prospective cohort (2013–2019) including fetuses with left heart defects (aortic coarctation, aortic stenosis, hypoplastic left heart, and multilevel obstruction (complex left heart defects) subdivided according to their outcome (favorable vs. poor), and control fetuses were evaluated in the third trimester of pregnancy at three referral centers in Spain. Poor outcome was defined as univentricular palliation, heart transplant, or death. Cord blood concentrations of N-terminal precursor of B-type natriuretic peptide, Troponin I, transforming growth factor β, placental growth factor, and soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 were determined. A total of 45 fetuses with left heart defects (29 favorable and 16 poor outcomes) and 35 normal fetuses were included, with a median follow-up of 3.1 years (interquartile range 1.4–3.9). Left heart defects with favorable outcome showed markedly increased cord blood transforming growth factor β (normal heart median 15.5 ng/mL (6.8–21.4) vs. favorable outcome 51.7 ng/mL (13.8–73.9) vs. poor outcome 25.1 ng/mL (6.9–39.0), p = 0.001) and decreased placental growth factor concentrations (normal heart 17.9 pg/mL (13.8–23.9) vs. favorable outcome 12.8 pg/mL (11.7–13.6) vs. poor outcome 11.0 pg/mL (8.8–15.4), p < 0.001). Poor outcome left heart defects had higher N-terminal precursor of B-type natriuretic peptide (normal heart 508.0 pg/mL (287.5–776.3) vs. favorable outcome 617.0 pg/mL (389.8–1087.8) vs. poor outcome 1450.0 pg/mL (919.0–1645.0), p = 0.001) and drastically reduced soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 concentrations (normal heart 1929.7 pg/mL (1364.3–2715.8) vs. favorable outcome (1848.3 pg/mL (646.9–2313.6) vs. poor outcome 259.0 pg/mL (182.0–606.0), p < 0.001). Summary: Establishing a diagnosis of primary HIV infection (PHI) is important for both the affected individual and public health, because the newly infected individual might readily transmit HIV to others. Unfortunately, diagnosing PHI is hindered by its non-specific presentation, among other factors. We report the case of a patient with extensive multiple organ involvement (fever, rhabdomyolysis, myocarditis, pancreatitis, bilateral renal infarcts, acute renal failure and anemia) in the setting of documented HIV seroconversion as an unusual form of PHI. The reactions between [Cu(quin)2(H2O)] (quin− = the anionic form of quinoline-2-carboxylic acid) and a series of aliphatic amino alcohols have yielded structurally very diverse copper(II) complexes, labelled a–g. Single-crystal X-ray structure analysis has revealed either intact amino alcohol molecules or amino alcoholate ions serving as ligands. In type a complexes, the amino alcohols are bound in a monodentate manner via NH2. Engagement of both functional groups in coordination was observed for types b and e (a bidentate chelating mode) and type c (a bidentate bridging one) complexes. In view of the strong bidentate chelating coordination of quinaldinate in [Cu(quin)2(H2O)], the formation of homoleptic amino alcohol complexes e was not anticipated. Equally surprising was the transformation of a mononuclear starting material into a one-dimensional (1D) coordination polymer, [Cu(quin)2]n (g). Spontaneous deprotonation of some amino alcohols and coordination of, thus formed, amino alcoholates via both donors also took place. Dinuclear complexes (d) contained two bridging amino alcoholates, whilst bidentate chelating mode was observed for type f. Interestingly, the dinuclear complex exists as two isomers which differ in the position of quinaldinates with respect to the Cu(μ-OR)2Cu core. DFT calculations on isolated syn- and anti-[Cu2(quin)2(3a1pO)2] (3a1pO− = anion of 3-amino-1-propanol) have shown the syn isomer to be more stable. The explanation lies in the intramolecular π⋯π stacking of quinaldinates, possible only in this isomer. Magnetic susceptibility measurements revealed antiferromagnetic interactions between S = 1/2 copper(II) spins in all the studied compounds except in [Cu(quin)2]n (g) for which weak ferromagnetic couplings are detected. Background: Transgender women (TGW) consistently show lower adherence to antiretroviral treatment (ART), than cisgender people (CP) living with HIV. This study examined sociodemographic and psychosocial factors associated with gender identity among individuals disengaged from HIV care in Argentina. Methods: Data for this study was obtained at baseline from the Conexiones y Opciones Positivas en la Argentina 2 (COPA2) study. Forty-one TGW and 360 CP (177 male, 183 female) disengaged from HIV care completed questionnaires assessing sociodemographic information, severity of depressive symptoms, substance and alcohol use, patient-provider relationship quality, self-efficacy, ART adherence motivation, self-reported adherence, and treatment-related factors. Analyses included chi-square tests exploring the association between categorical variables and gender identity, and ANCOVAs comparing groups controlling for age. Results: Being a TGW was associated with having only public health insurance; substance use, particularly cocaine; substance-related problems; and hazardous drinking. TGW showed more negative consequences related to substance use, more hazardous alcohol use, lower patient-provider relationship quality, and lower self-reported adherence, than CP. Conclusions: Harm reduction should be a key component in HIV care for TGW to address substance use. Health care teams should receive formal training in patient-provider communication skills and trans-specific competencies to enhance TGW's adherence and retention. Microfluidization is a preparation method that can be used to obtain emulsions with submicron droplet sizes. The first objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of homogenization pressure and cycles on droplet sizes using response surface methodology. Secondly, the influence of the diutan gum concentration incorporated in the optimized emulsion on rheological properties, microstructure, and physical stability was investigated. Taking the response surface analysis into account, the emulsion processed at 20,000 psi after four cycles seemed to show the smallest Sauter diameter values. Hence, this emulsion was the starting point to incorporate diutan gum. Interestingly, the formation of a 3D network in the emulsion, observed by FESEM, was provoked by diutan gum. The emulsion formulated with 0.4 wt.% of diutan gum presented rheological gel properties and enhanced physical stability. This work highlights the importance of selecting optimized processing variables using the microfluidization technique and extends the knowledge of using diutan gum in combination with zein. To broaden the limited knowledge concerning the zinc(II) coordination chemistry with amino alcohols, reactions of [Zn(quin)2(H2O)] (quin− = quinaldinate, C10H6NO2) with 3-amino-1-propanol (3-apOH, C3H9NO) and N-methylaminoethanol (N-maeOH, C3H9NO) were investigated. The starting material, zinc(II) with two quinaldinates coordinated in a bidentate chelating mode, provides a structurally rigid core with two sites available for interaction with amino alcohol ligands. When the reactions were carried out in acetonitrile in autoclaves at 105 °C, an unforeseen decomposition of amino alcohols to ammonia took place. This was accompanied by crystallization of an ammine complex [Zn(quin)2(NH3)] (1). Mass spectrometry of the gaseous phases confirmed unambiguously the presence of ammonia in such reaction mixtures. The desired complexes with coordinated amino alcohols could be obtained in good yield by carrying out the reactions at room temperature and/or in various solvents. Two novel amino alcohol complexes were prepared, [Zn(quin)2(3-apOH)] and [Zn(quin)2(N-maeOH)]. The 3-apOH ligand was coordinated to zinc(II) in a monodentate manner via the amino nitrogen. The 3-apOH complex crystallizes as an acetonitrile (2a), ethanol (2b), 2-propanol (2c) or water (2d) solvate. The conversion of 2a to 2d was monitored by IR spectroscopy. In [Zn(quin)2(N-maeOH)] (3), the N-maeOH ligand was coordinated in a bidentate chelating manner through both functional groups. DFT calculations were performed on the isomers of [Zn(quin)2(3-apOH)] and [Zn(quin)2(N-maeOH)], which differ in the binding modes of their amino alcohol ligands. The contamination of the environment by domestic and industrial discharges is a relevant and persistent problem that needs novel solutions. Innovations in the detection, adsorption, and removal or in-situ degradation of toxic components are urgently required. Various effective techniques and materials have been proposed to address this problem, in which carbon dots (CDs) stand out because of their unique properties and low-cost and abundant nature. Their combination with different metals results in the enhancement of their innate properties. Metal-doped CDs have shown excellent results and competitive advantages in recent times. Considering the above useful critiques and CDs notable potentialities, this review discusses different approaches in detail to sense, adsorb, and photodegrade different pollutants in water samples. It was found that altering the electronic structure of CDs via metal doping has a great potential to enhance the optical, electrical, chemical, and magnetic capabilities of CDs, which in turn is beneficial for wastewater treatment. Euryarchaea from the genus H alorhabdus have been found in hypersaline habitats worldwide, yet are represented by only two isolates: H alorhabdus utahensis AX-2T from the shallow Great Salt Lake of Utah, and H alorhabdus tiamatea SARL4 BT from the Shaban deep-sea hypersaline anoxic lake ( DHAL) in the Red Sea. We sequenced the H . tiamatea genome to elucidate its niche adaptations. Among sequenced archaea, H . tiamatea features the highest number of glycoside hydrolases, the majority of which were expressed in proteome experiments. Annotations and glycosidase activity measurements suggested an adaptation towards recalcitrant algal and plant-derived hemicelluloses. Glycosidase activities were higher at 2% than at 0% or 5% oxygen, supporting a preference for low-oxygen conditions. Likewise, proteomics indicated quinone-mediated electron transport at 2% oxygen, but a notable stress response at 5% oxygen. H alorhabdus tiamatea furthermore encodes proteins characteristic for thermophiles and light-dependent enzymes (e.g. bacteriorhodopsin), suggesting that H . tiamatea evolution was mostly not governed by a cold, dark, anoxic deep-sea habitat. Using enrichment and metagenomics, we could demonstrate presence of similar glycoside hydrolase-rich H alorhabdus members in the Mediterranean DHAL Medee, which supports that H alorhabdus species can occupy a distinct niche as polysaccharide degraders in hypersaline environments. Microbial metabolism in aromatic-contaminated environments has important ecological implications, and obtaining a complete understanding of this process remains a relevant goal. To understand the roles of biodiversity and aromatic-mediated genetic and metabolic rearrangements, we conducted 'OMIC' investigations in an anthropogenically influenced and polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-contaminated soil with (Nbs) or without (N) bio-stimulation with calcium ammonia nitrate, NH4NO3 and KH2PO4 and the commercial surfactant Iveysol, plus two naphthalene-enriched communities derived from both soils (CN2 and CN1, respectively). Using a metagenomic approach, a total of 52, 53, 14 and 12 distinct species (according to operational phylogenetic units (OPU) in our work equivalent to taxonomic species) were identified in the N, Nbs, CN1 and CN2 communities, respectively. Approximately 10 out of 95 distinct species and 238 out of 3293 clusters of orthologous groups (COGs) protein families identified were clearly stimulated under the assayed conditions, whereas only two species and 1465 COGs conformed to the common set in all of the mesocosms. Results indicated distinct biodegradation capabilities for the utilisation of potential growth-supporting aromatics, which results in bio-stimulated communities being extremely fit to naphthalene utilisation and non-stimulated communities exhibiting a greater metabolic window than previously predicted. On the basis of comparing protein expression profiles and metagenome data sets, inter-alia interactions among members were hypothesised. The phylogenetic and functional structure of the microbial community residing in a Ca-rich anoxic sediment of a sub-saline shallow lake (Laguna de Carrizo, initially operated as a gypsum (CaSO × 2 HO) mine) was estimated by analyzing the diversity of 16S rRNA amplicons and a 3.1 Mb of consensus metagenome sequence. The lake has about half the salinity of seawater and possesses an unusual relative concentration of ions, with Ca and SO being dominant. The 16S rRNA sequences revealed a diverse community with about 22% of the bacterial rRNAs being less than 94.5% similar to any rRNA currently deposited in GenBank. In addition to this, about 79% of the archaeal rRNA genes were mostly related to uncultured Euryarchaeota of the CCA47 group, which are often associated with marine and oxygen-depleted sites. Sequence analysis of assembled genes revealed that 23% of the open reading frames of the metagenome library had no hits in the database. Among annotated genes, functions related to (thio) sulfate and (thio) sulfonate-reduction and iron-oxidation, sulfur-oxidation, denitrification, synthrophism, and phototrophic sulfur metabolism were found as predominant. Phylogenetic and biochemical analyses indicate that the inherent physical-chemical characteristics of this habitat coupled with adaptation to anthropogenic activities have resulted in a highly efficient community for the assimilation of polysulfides, sulfoxides, and organosulfonates together with nitro-, nitrile-, and cyanide-substituted compounds. We discuss that the relevant microbial composition and metabolic capacities at Laguna de Carrizo, likely developed as an adaptation to thrive in the presence of moderate salinity conditions and potential toxic bio-molecules, in contrast with the properties of previously known anoxic sediments of shallow lakes.
