Sonuçlar, özellikle kahvelerden elde edilen yeşil kahvenin, hem ilaç hem de gıda endüstrilerinde potansiyel antioksidan bileşikler ve önemli tirozinaz inhibitör kaynağı olarak kabul edilebileceğini göstermektedir., Coffee has been drunk for millennia due to its taste and health benefits. High levels of polyphenols, and especially flavonoids and phenolic acids, are found in coffee and contribute significantly to its flavor and health-giving properties. In this study the total phenolic contents, antioxidant, and tyrosinase inhibition of green coffee, and Turkish traditional coffee extracts were evaluated. Antioxidant activities of the coffees were examined by two different methods, radical 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). Total phenolic contents were estimated by using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent as the gallic acid equivalent. The phenolic profiles were investigated by means of reverse phase-high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). At the same time, tyrosinase enzyme inhibition of extracts has also been worked. The extracts exhibited high levels of antioxidant activities associated with significant antioxidant compound contents. It was determined that the samples contain chlorogenic acid and benzoic acid in the RP-HPLC analysis. It was determined that green coffee extract exhibited tyrosinase enzyme inhibition as effective as kojic acid. The results show that green coffee especially from coffees can be regarded as a potential source of antioxidant compounds and tyrosinase inhibitors of significance in both the pharmaceutical and food industries.

The purpose of this studywas to investigate the phytochemical analysis of D. pentaphyllum and its cytotoxic activity on human cervical cancer(HeLa) cells with possible mechanisms. Total phenolic contents (TPC) andphytochemical analysis of the extract were evaluated using spectrophotometricmethod and RP-HPLC, respectively. The cytotoxic effect of the extract was evaluated using theMTT assay. The mechanism of the cytotoxic effect of the extract was also evaluatedin terms of apoptosis, cell cycle, and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP)using the fluorometric methods. The TPC of the extract was calculated as68.9±2.3 mg gallic acid equivalent per g sample and quercetin was determined asthe major phenolic in the extract. The extract showed a selective cytotoxiceffect (6.5-fold) on HeLa cells compared to normal fibroblast cells. Thecytotoxic effect of the extract was found to be due to the arresting of thecell cycle in the S phase and increasing apoptosis through decreased MMP. Furtherstudies are needed for the comprehensive effects of the extract on cellsignaling., Bu çalışmanın amacı, D. pentaphyllum'un fitokimyasal analizini gerçekleştirmek vebitkinin insan serviks kanseri (HeLa) hücreleri üzerindeki sitotoksikaktivitesini olası mekanizmalarla birlikte araştırmaktır.

Ancak mineral katkı oranının saptanabileceği ve tedavi amaçlı kullanılabilirliğiyle ilgili ileri in vivo çalışmalara ihtiyaç vardır., Aim: Royal jelly is a bee product that secreted from glands of young worker bees and used resource of food for larvae and queen honeybee. Royal jelly which is very important for physiological development of queen honeybee and larvae, also used by people due to the nutritional properties and positive effects on health. Royal jelly contains water, lipid, protein, carbohydrate, amino acid, short peptide, vitamin, phenolic compounds, trace element and minerals. It was suggested that composition of royal jelly varies depending on the geographical structure of the zone, climate, flora that it is produced, storage condition and bees race. There are also publications which suggest that mineral content of royal jelly is independent of geographical structure and climate, but only varies depending on the harvesting time. There are not so many study related with chemical composition and biological properties of royal jelly that is produced in Turkey. In this study, it was aimed to determine some element levels in royal jelly samples that obtained from Bursa province, Mustafakemalpaşa district.Material and Methods: Element levels of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), magnesium (Mg) and calcium (Ca) determined by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) (n=3). For each element, the results were exhibited as mean±standard deviation. Results: The amount of Cu was determined 3.25±0.05 mg/kg, the amount of Zn was 23.87±1.33 mg/kg, the amount of Mg was 794.33±38.44 mg/kg and the amount of Ca was 250.87±24.49 mg/kg in Bursa royal jelly. Conclusion: Element levels of Bursa royal jelly are at a level that can contribute to daily mineral requirement. However, there is a need for further in vivo studies on the availability of mineral additives and their therapeutic utility.

Objective: Our country contains a large number of medical and aromatic plants with rich flora. Nowadays phytotherapy research has become popular. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant and antimicrobial capacities, and tyrosinase inhibitory effect of methanolic extracts of Dactylorhiza osmanica. Material and Method: The antioxidant properties of extract were investigated using in vitro antioxidant assay methods such as total phenolic content (TPC), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity assay. Enzyme inhibitory effect was tested aganist tyrosinase. The phenolic composition of extract was investigated by means of reverse phase-high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). Antimicrobial activity was tested using the disc diffusion method. Tyrosinase inhibitor activity was tested to colorimetrically. Results: The total phenolic content value is 11.2 ± 0.472 mg gallic acid per gram sample, FRAP value is 240 ± 2.645 µM Trolox/g sample, and IC50 value for DPPH assay has been found as 0.708 ± 0.010 mg/mL. Phenolic compounds were identified as gallic acid, proto-catechuic acid, protocatechuic aldehyde, p-hydroxy benzoic acid, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, vanillin, p-coumaric acid, syringaldehyde, ferulic acid, and benzoic acid. The IC50 value of the extract was not significant in determining tyrosinase inhibitor activity. The extract displayed moderate antibacterial activity against an acid-fast bacterium (M. smegmatis), some Gram pozitive (S. aureus and B. cereus) and Gram negatif (Y. pseudotuberculosis) bacteria. Conclusion: According to the results of the present study, D. osmanica can be considered as a potential source for developing new pharmaceuticals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SÜMM&HY In `the present study, it. was aimed to investigate the relationship between low cholesterol levels and the increased tendency to suicide in the depressive patients which is not clearly explained in the present literatures up to now. Study group included 48 depressive patients (male 15, female 33) diagnosed by using DSM III criteria and was divided into two subgroups as dysthmic disorder (n:14) and major depression (34). All the patients were followed and evaluated in the first and fourth months of the drug treatment with sex and age matched. 50 healthy voluteers were investigated as a control group. Serum total cholesterol, triacylglycerides, HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels were evaluated (in study groups) in terms of as a lipid and lipoprotein parameters. There were no significant differences in lipid and lipo protein parameters between depressive and control groups and between dysthmic and majör depressive groups were found. The drug therapy did not change the lipid and lipoprotein profil es of the follow-up patients. Serum total cholesterol and triacylglycerider levels of tree patients who had committed suicide were found lower than the other patients, but this was not statistically significant. I was concluded that the serum lipid and lipoprotein le vels in the depressive patients did not show significant dif-37 f erances with respect to the control subjects. also, the activity of the disase did not significantly affect the lipid and lipoprotein levels in the depressive patients. 43

Background/aim: Our objective was to identify the antioxidant properties of honeybee products from Turkey, chestnut honey, pollen, propolis, and royal jelly, and their hepatoprotective activity against CCl
4 -induced hepatic damage in rats. Materials and methods: Animals were fed with honeybee products for 7 days following CCl4 injection. Development of liver damage and oxidative stress were monitored by measuring the activities of the enzymes alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase, malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase, and catalase. Antioxidant capacities of the bee products were identified using FRAP and DPPH assays, as well as by measuring total phenolic and flavonoid contents. Results: The antioxidant activities of the honeybee products were highest in propolis, followed, in order, by pollen, honey, and royal jelly. Despite their different levels of antioxidant capacity, their roles in the prevention of liver damage induced by CCl4 were very similar, which can be explained through their bioavailability to the treated animals. Conclusions: Our results suggest that honey, propolis, pollen, and royal jelly significantly enhanced the healing of CCl4 -induced liver damage, partially due to their antioxidant properties and bioavailability. The purpose of this study was to investigate antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of selected honeys, chestnut n = 15 , Bayburt n = 8 and Anzer n = 7 from Turkey. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by the following three methods: scavenging of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl DPPH free radicals, total phenolics and ferric reducing/antioxidant power FRAP . Antimicrobial activity was studied by agar diffusion method by using eight bacteria and two fungi. The antioxidant activities were found to be related to the sample concentrations. The phenolic contents of the honeys were found to be significantly related with antioxidant activities with a correlation coefficient of R2 = 0.77. All samples showed moderate antimicrobial activity, especially against Helicobacter pylori, Staphylococcus aureus and Klepsiella pneumonia. No activity was observed against the two fungi, Candida albicans and Candida tropicalis.

Maillard reaksiyonu,Bal,Hidroksimetil furfural,Antioksidan,Akrilamid ,Maillard Reaction,Honey,Hydroxymethylfurfural HMF,Antioxidant,Acrylamide - Abstract
Reactions between free amino groups of proteins and peptides and reducing sugars or lipid oxidation products are non-enzymatic reactions called “Maillard Reactions”. Maillard Reactions may depend on the types and quantity of reactants, and pH, temperature and water activity of medium. Hydroxymethylfurfural, furfural, melanoidins, and acrylamide are the best known Maillard Reaction Products MRP . MRP are partly responsible for the taste of bread, cookies, cakes, meat, beer, chocolate, pop corn and rice; however, it is not always desired to take place this reaction in foods because of the cytotoxic, genotoxic and carcinogenic effects of the advanced reaction products. Recently, positive attributes of the MRP, especially early reaction products, have been reported in several in vitro studies. In this study, the Maillard Reactions occurring in foods have been reviewed and the importance of this reaction in foods was explained, Gıdalarda bulunan serbest amino asitlerin, proteinlerin veya peptitlerin serbest amino grupları ile indirgen şekerler veya lipit oksidasyon ürünleri arasında gerçekleşen ve enzimatik olmayan kahverengileşme reaksiyonları “Maillard Reaksiyonu” olarak bilinir. MRÜ ekmeğin, kurabiyelerin, keklerin, etin, biranın, çikolatanın, patlamış mısırın, pilavın lezzetinden kısmen sorumlu olmasına rağmen ileri bozunma ürünlerinin sitotoksik, genotoksik ve karsinojenik özelliklerinden dolayı gıdalarda oluşması her zaman istenmez. Bununla birlikte son yıllarda özellikle erken aşamadaki MRÜ’lerin faydalı yönleri in vitro çalışmalarda rapor edilmiştir. Bu çalışmada gıdalarda gerçekleşen Maillard reaksiyonları hakkındaki çalışmalar derlenmiş ve gıdalardaki önemi ortaya konulmuştur

- Abstract
The changes in antioxidant-oxidant balance play important roles in the pathophysiology of neuropsychiatric conditions. Bipolar disorder (BD) is a psychiatric condition with recurrent mood disturbances. This study evaluates the effects of treatment with lithium, alone or in combination with antipsychotic olanzapine, on oxidant-antioxidant status and atherogenic character in patients with BD. The blood samples from 15 patients were tested before the treatment (pre-treatment phase) and at the ends of two consecutive treatment periods: period I, treatment with lithium and an antipsychotic drug, olanzapine (first 6 months) and period II, treatment with only lithium (6 months following period I). We measured serum atherogenic lipids (total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL-cholesterol), plasma lipid peroxides (thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances), antioxidant enzymes (glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase) in neutrophils and lymphocytes, and total antioxidant status in plasma. Compared with pre-treatment phase, the lipid parameters were increased with each treatment; especially, LDL-cholesterol was significantly increased only with lithium treatment. These findings alert to be cautious about use of lithium in patients with atherogenic conditions. Moreover, plasma lipid peroxides were decreased significantly after the combination therapy and further decreased with lithium treatment. Antioxidant enzyme activities in lymphocytes were decreased after both types of treatment. Importantly, plasma total antioxidant status was increased only with lithium treatment. Thus, treatment with lithium alone decreases already up-set oxidant status in BD. In conclusion, the combination therapy with olanzapine is better in terms of atherogenic profile, while lithium alone produces better antioxidant status in patients with BD.
