Purpose: This study aims to investigate the potential impact and passenger perceptions of integrating multimedia books within airline services, aiming to elucidate the evolving landscape of in-flight entertainment and reading experiences. Design/methodology/approach: A quantitative research methodology was used, using a structured questionnaire distributed to presenters at the International Federation of Library Associations. Findings: Analysis revealed varying passenger interest in multimedia books, with approximately 57.7% displaying engagement, while 40.4% demonstrated limited interest or none. However, a notable majority (60.6%) preferred multimedia books over traditional print books during flights. Furthermore, 90.4% perceived a positive impact of multimedia books on flight reading experiences, leading to increased satisfaction (81.7%) and a high likelihood of recommending airlines offering such content (91.3%). Research limitations/implications: The study's limitations include a specific focus on International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) World Library and Information Congress (WLIC) presenters, potentially limiting broader generalisations. Further research might explore the preferences of a wider demographic range and incorporate qualitative aspects to deepen understanding. Airlines could leverage multimedia books to enhance passenger satisfaction, attract diverse audiences and foster cultural inclusivity within in-flight entertainment. Flight data monitoring (FDM) began in the flight test community in 1939 and entered the airline industry in 1974. In the 48 years since, however, very few operators have chosen to adopt this practice, which has shown clear safety benefits where it has found acceptance. While technical issues have created some obstacles, cultural issues have proven the greatest hindrance to wider FDM adoption. These cultural issues originated in the traits associated with pilots' personalities, especially distrust of the regulators and operators who would administer flight data analysis programs (FDAP) that used FDM information. U.S. regulators have relied on voluntary adoption, rather than regulatory mandates, to increase FDM participation, emphasizing the collective benefits of FDAP outputs in increasing the safety of flight for operators using that information. Leadership by both experienced and new employees, as well as regulators and other industry stakeholders, will best serve to increase FDM participation until it becomes ubiquitous. This empirical qualitative study explores the role of gaming simulations in catalyzing changes to organization-wide management's perspectives on a novel strategy for aircraft orders and retirements. A large US airline developed the new strategy to tackle the pervasive problem of profit cyclicality, driving poor average profit performance across the cycle. Based on the dynamic model used to develop the strategy with senior management, a gaming simulation workshop was designed and delivered in groups of 20 to over 200 organization-wide managers. They tested various strategies for aircraft orders and retirements, under scenarios for market demand and conduct for competitors and regulators. A qualitative methodology was used to capture the workshop participants' perspectives on the efficacy of various capacity strategies, before, during and after the workshop. The findings are that managers experiment risk-free with innovations in strategies for capacity orders and retirements and they do indeed discover for themselves that there are counterintuitive alternatives that can achieve large and stable profitable growth. These strategies depend on competitors (role-played by workshops participants in the simulation) cooperating to create a win-win equilibrium. Performance far exceeds the industry benchmark profit cycle. The contribution is the empirical evidence of the effectiveness of gaming simulations to catalyze managers' shared beliefs and buy-in to a new strategy or business model. There are implications for practitioners in airlines and other sectors on the use of a gaming simulation workshop toolset, to help create such buy-in for an emerging strategy or business model. Competition in the airline transportation sector has significantly intensified following the deregulation act in the United States. To remain competitive, airline companies have begun implementing a range of strategies. One of the strategies commonly used by airlines is to improve service quality. Service quality has been very beneficial for airline companies to maintain profitability and increase market share. To achieve this goal, airlines must investigate the factors influencing service quality and enact improvements and regulations based on these determinants. There are significant studies in the literature on the influence of service employees on service quality. However, there are only a limited number of studies on the influence of the service quality of flight attendants, who are the public face of airline operations, on service quality. This study focuses on the influence of the level of attractiveness (a nonverbal characteristic) of flight attendants on perceived service quality. This research employs a neuromarketing method, specifically the frontal asymmetry approach, using electroencephalography (EEG) techniques. In the experiment, 37 participants were recruited, including 19 males and 18 females, and frontal alpha asymmetry metric results were derived from electrode pairs. In the experiment conducted at the Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Eskisehir Technical University, participants also evaluated the influence of flight attendant attractiveness on service quality using a survey technique. The findings indicate a significant difference in frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA) metrics between attractive and unattractive flight attendants. FFA metrics of attractive flight attendants were greater than those of unattractive flight attendants. Additionally, FAA metrics were found to be greater under favourable service delivery than under unfavourable service delivery. Furthermore, among the service dimensions, the reliability and responsiveness dimensions had higher FAA metrics than did the other dimensions. A study comparing EEG results with survey responses revealed a statistically significant difference. The findings indicate that flight attendants with higher levels of attractiveness enhance their motivation to approach, thereby contributing to an improvement in perceived service quality. Moreover, these findings underscore the potential of neuromarketing methods for validating outcomes from conventional research approaches. Based on these findings, airlines should develop policies that prioritize attractive attributes in the recruitment of flight attendants. In addition, implementing various programs and incentive systems to maintain the attractiveness of flight attendants is essential. Moreover, providing services with diversified flight attendant profiles tailored to different customer segments is considered crucial for customer satisfaction and experience. Future studies could achieve more comprehensive results by using diverse sample sizes and age groups along with different neuromarketing techniques. Driven by the fierce competition in the airline industry, carriers strive to increase their customer satisfaction by understanding their expectations and tailoring their service offerings. Due to the explosive growth of social media usage, airlines have the opportunity to capitalize on the abundantly available online customer reviews (OCR) to extract key insights about their services and competitors. However, the analysis of such unstructured textual data is complex and time-consuming. This research aims to automatically and efficiently extract airline-specific intelligence (i.e., passenger-perceived strengths and weaknesses) from OCR. Topic modeling algorithms are employed to discover the prominent service quality aspects discussed in the OCR. Likewise, sentiment analysis methods and collocation analysis are used to classify review sentence sentiment and ascertain the major reasons for passenger satisfaction/dissatisfaction, respectively. Subsequently, an ensemble-assisted topic model (EA-TM) and sentiment analyzer (E-SA) is proposed to classify each review sentence to the most representative aspect and sentiment. A case study involving 398,571 airline review sentences of a US-based target carrier and four of its competitors is used to validate the proposed framework. The proposed EA-TM and E-SA achieved 17–23% and 9–20% higher classification accuracy over individual benchmark models, respectively. The results reveal 11 different aspects of airline service quality from the OCR, airline-specific sentiment summary towards each aspect, and root causes for passenger satisfaction/dissatisfaction for each identified topic. Background: The development of airlines owned or managed by private parties today shows a fairly high development so that the level of competition to get customers is increasingly difficult. One of the strategies carried out by airline management is to provide optimal service, it is expected that those who provide flight services will meet the expectations of their customers, able to win the competition which ultimately gets maximum profit. Purpose: This study is intended to determine the results of service quality on the satisfaction of Airline clients in Tanzania, especially Precision Air Limited customers Method: The explanatory study designed the data collected using interview method of 4oo customers of Precision Air Limited, non-probability sampling procedure was used to select a sample of respondents from the target population, multiple regression analysis to answer the research objectives. Key information in the study was collected through questionnaires, interviews, and observations. Pearson correlation was carried out to assess the strength and direction of linear relationships between variables, multiple regression models at a significance level of 5% were used to determine the relationship between dimensions of service quality and customer satisfaction Results: The results in this study show that the findings spread that the five spheres of facility excellence are positively related to customer satisfaction. Relying on multiple regression results, it was found that the significance value of each independent variable was tangible 0.674, reliability 0.001, assurance 0.449, and empathy 0.000 Conclusion: It can be concluded that service quality is seen from three dimensions: dependability, receptiveness, understanding have a positive and significant effect on client satisfaction. The aim of analyzing advertising discourse is to understand the methods of shaping the intended message to the recipient in order to influence and persuade. It also aims to uncover the mechanisms of persuasion as a distinctive speech process that combines both verbal and visual systems in its endeavor to influence and convince the recipient. It utilizes implicit and explicit persuasive techniques to attract and entice the audience to acquire the product through various advertising media and scenes. This can be applied to the promotional advertisement video for the new visual brand identity of Saudi Arabian Airlines, "Our New Logo," from a semiotic perspective. The analysis concluded that Saudi Airlines employed two dimensions in their verbal discourse: the congruent dimension and the suggestive dimension. The congruent discourse was evident, indicating a comprehensive development of Saudi Airlines' brand identity by offering services to travelers with a new approach. On the other hand, the suggestive discourse began with a headline that successfully captured attention by incorporating elements of attraction, attention, excitement, and intrigue, while posing questions to engage the recipient in watching the advertisement. The text itself fulfilled its suggestive function through the use of metaphors and deception, creating a collective socialist image in the recipient's mind by shaping it according to their imagination. The visual discourse contributed to reinforcing this collective socialist image in the recipient's mind through visual images and colors that served a non-verbal function, relying on their cultural reference and local identity to direct them towards the intended message. The analysis reveals that Saudi Airlines relied more on emotional appeals rather than rational appeals in their advertising discourse to promote their new visual brand identity. With technological advances, humans are constantly generating data through various electronic devices and sensors, and this data is stored in digital environments. A vast amount of data has served as a valuable asset that has facilitated the rise and progression of novel fields, including data science, artificial intelligence (AI), deep learning (DL), and the internet of things (IoT). Effectively managing and analyzing data provides a competitive advantage for modern businesses. The objective of this study is to forecast the stock price of Turkish Airlines (THY), a publicly traded corporation listed on Borsa Istanbul. In order to achieve the intended objective, the utilization of machine learning approaches like SVM and XGBoost, as well as the deep learning algorithm Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), are used. The models are trained over a time period including daily data from January 4, 2010 to September 5, 2023. The forecast performance of the models is evaluated by comparing the actual and predicted stock prices and the model with the lowest error is identified. The proposed models' performances are assessed using the RMSE, MSE, MAE, and R2 error statistics. According to the results obtained, it is determined that the LSTM model has lower error coefficients than SVM and XGBoost models and gives the best performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Airlines' frequent flyer programs operate more like a monetary system, with points as a form of currency, than a typical discount or rewards plan. In fact, airlines' power over points is even more extensive than that of a central bank over currency--beyond simply determining how many points are in circulation, airlines also control the value of points at redemption, how many points consumers can accumulate, and when points expire. This financialized form of frequent flyer programs has proven to be lucrative. For the Big Four airlines, frequent flyer programs are worth markedly more than the business of providing air travel itself. Much of this profit stems from selling points to third parties, like banks, which use the promise of points to incentivize consumers' credit card spending. The very structure of frequent flyer programs presents a problem for consumer protection. The value of these programs relies on consumers' belief in the value of points. At the same time, the value of these programs also depends on preventing consumers from efficiently redeeming their outstanding points, which would present an unsustainable cost for the airlines. In other words, the value of these programs stems from ensuring consumers believe that points are highly valuable, while limiting the points' actual value. This market structure relies on keeping consumers in the dark. Because the structure of frequent flyer programs depends on consumer deception, regulatory action is necessary. To that end, this Note analyzes the sometimes-overlapping regulatory mandates of the Federal Trade Commission, Department of Transportation, and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. It then proposes that the agencies act to provide much-needed transparency in the market for frequent flyer points. Policies to reduce air travel demand, including in the tourism sector, are urgently required as air travel's climate impact keeps growing while low-carbon aviation remains a distant perspective. Policy options include flat rate taxes per flight, taxes on flight miles or emissions, or frequent flyer levies, yet little is known about how their distributional impacts compare. This paper examines the distributional effects of various air travel tax options for the UK, informed by an analysis of the distribution of (frequent) flights and associated emissions over income and other social characteristics. We find that 'frequent flights' are even more unequally distributed than all flights and that all taxes on air travel are distributionally neutral or progressive. The most progressive option is a 'frequent air miles tax' based on both the number of flights and emissions. At the same time, some social groups like recent migrants are relatively likely to be 'frequent flyers' even on lower incomes. Overall however, our results show that taxing air travel is far less regressive than taxing home energy or motor fuels. Taxes on air travel, while often portrayed as unfair in public discourses, therefore raise fewer fairness concerns than other types of carbon taxes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Low-cost airlines have embraced diverse business models, yielding varying degrees of success. In our study, we apply a configurational approach that allows us to evaluate business models not as isolated components but as intricate business configurations. Through this lens, we identify two distinct models that successful low-cost airlines adopt: the pure low-cost model and the hybrid model. Each model has its own specific, often contradictory, attributes. Most significantly, our findings indicate that low-cost airlines must choose between offering a broad spectrum of additional services or focusing on high productivity and on-time performance. Our analyses reveal that low-cost airlines cannot sidestep this trade-off, as a simultaneous offering of both models does not lead to success. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Perceived corporate sustainability is the degree to which customers, who are users of products or services, believe in the values that businesses add to the world they live in economically, socially and environmentally. This study was conducted to research how corporate sustainability is perceived by its passengers and whether this perception has a positive affect to customer loyalty or not. For this purpose, a face-to-face questionnaire was applied to 600 passengers traveling with airline companies operating in Turkey and using Erzurum as their starting and destination point. After removing the incorrect and incomplete forms, the data obtained from the remaining 560 questionnaires were analyzed with the SPSS 26.0 program. The results have showed that perceived economic, social and corporate sustainability have a significant and positive relationship with customer loyalty for all airline companies in the business. Thus, within these three performances, a judgement has been reached that with the increase in corporate sustainability, customer loyalty also increased. Another result of the study is that there is a significant difference between airline companies in the relationship between passengers' perceptions of corporate sustainability and customer loyalty. Nationality is a crucial element of the regime governing international airlines, the industry which is a key means of economic globalization. I argue that economic nationalist motives drive states to harness international economic flows to support sovereignty and national identity. Economic nationalism is conceptualized as a performative phenomenon, describing how states make sovereignty and nations real by enabling and controlling economic practices. Using a mixed-methods approach, I statistically examine an observable implication that dyads which have greater cultural difference tend to have less liberal bilateral air services agreements. I then investigate through analytic narratives how Canada and the EU dealt with the rapid growth and ambitious expansion of the Gulf state airlines, which were themselves economic nationalist projects. Canada restricted traffic rights while the EU has exerted control by enforcing concepts of fair competition and publicizing its scrutiny of foreign ownership and control over EU airlines. A key contribution of this article is to explore how trade policy is driven by symbolic politics, and to raise the possibility that material gains are pursed to support performances of national identity and sovereignty. This study aims to conceptually diversify loyalty programme designs for a richer consumer experience in airlines and hotels by framing loyalty programme rewards into four categories: social-comparison, self-expression, community, and companionship in terms of psychological values by amalgamating theories of agency, communion, and self-construal. The results of a two-stage quantitative study reveal that: (1) the ubiquitous social-comparison loyalty programme (i.e. loyalty programme with multi-tier structures) is not the most desired consumer choice; (2) factors driving loyalty programme choice are different between airline and hotel sectors; (3) consumer personality and individual values are important determinants of their loyalty programme choice. This study aims to analyze how good and efficient the low-cost carriers' connectivity is at their major airports by studying one of the largest low-cost carriers in the world, AirAsia Group. Weighted Connectivity Ratio is used in the calculation, applied with slight modifications to suit the operations of low-cost carriers at their airports. The results reveal that some airlines have very good connectivity, even when it is compared to the connectivity of several big full-service carriers in Europe. This research brings a novelty in the form of an analysis of connectivity of low-cost carriers, considering that most of the previous research only focused on the connectivity of full-service carriers that implement a hub-and-spoke strategy. This is important because low-cost carriers are currently present with a very rapid growth as an alternative flight option that is more affordable for passengers in addition to full-service carriers that have previously dominated the aviation market. Using data on the Japanese domestic market from 2008 to 2013, this paper investigates the market dynamics triggered by the 2010 bankruptcy protection of Japan Airlines (JAL). Our analysis suggests that JAL downsized its overall operations, leaving relatively thin routes even though there were fewer competitors and slightly higher yields in those thin markets. The airline nevertheless increased the yields and flight frequencies in the consolidated network more significantly than its rival airlines did. Following JAL's bankruptcy, Japanese carriers focused more on improving yield and frequency in general, and the competition between the duopoly airlines (JAL and All Nippon Airways (ANA)) became less effective. In comparison, low-cost carriers (LCCs) and smaller airlines continued to exert significant competitive pressure on the market despite their small market shares. These patterns are different from those observed in the US, where a huge domestic market is served by a large number of competitive airlines. Overall, our analysis suggests that the Japanese government's support of JAL's restructuring efforts was appropriate. However, there is evidence that the JAL-ANA duopoly became less effective in maintaining market competition. This paper investigates the impacts of Northeast Alliance (NEA) between American Airlines and JetBlue Airways on market concentration and airfares on routes to and from the four pertinent airports in Boston and New York regions. Using panel data covering quarterly domestic flight schedules and airfares for 11 U.S. airlines during the 2019–2021 period, we apply difference-in-difference method and find evidence for positive and significant NEA effect on market concentration on routes out of BOS, and negative and significant effect on routes out of EWR, but no significant effect for routes out of JFK and LGA. The overall NEA effects, including all four airports, are not significant. Furthermore, our airfare estimation results indicate that NEA has led to higher airfares on routes out of BOS, JFK and LGA, but not on routes out of EWR. Counterfeit aircraft parts are among the most well-known counterfeits and pose a significant risk to public safety. It is estimated that as much as 10% of the legal market for aircraft parts are counterfeits and the presence of these parts on commercial aircraft are more commonplace than many people realise. Yet, criminological research on this pressing issue is remarkably scarce. Informed by accounts from specialised and highly knowledgeable actors embedded in the aviation industry, this paper aims to explore how counterfeit and unapproved parts enter the legitimate supply chain and what factors drive or motivate their circulation and use. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to analyze the correlation between the Twitter activity of two airline companies and their stock performance at the Istanbul Stock Exchange (BIST). Design/methodology/approach: Overall, 113,018 tweets were divided into 34,152 semantic and 78,866 share tweets. Semantic tweets are tweets mentioning company's products or services and were labeled manually and with deep learning models. Share tweets were divided into 13,618 relevant and 65,248 irrelevant tweets. Findings: A positive correlation was found between share tweets and stock performance. Semantic tweets did not display a correlation with stock performance. Relevant share tweets displayed as a strong correlation as all share tweets for one company. Also, the manual labeling of 8,000 tweets led to the discovery of many insights related to service provision in the airway industry, management of digital support channels, management of reputation on social media and using Twitter as a customer support platform. Practical implications: Relevant share tweets comprise only 20% of all share tweets for one company and show the same level of correlation with stock performance. This means that the efficiency of business intelligence solutions created to monitor Twitter activity can be improved five times by saving computational power, network bandwidth and data storage. Originality/value: Previous research has analyzed all Twitter activity taken together. By dividing tweets into semantic and share tweets, this paper illustrates that it is, in fact, share tweets that are correlated with stock performance and not semantic tweets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aircraft dispatcher is an indispensable member of United States airline operations. The airline industry advanced from early attempts to transport mail and occasional passengers on a scheduled basis into a highly complex, tightly regulated, extremely safe means of transportation. Dispatchers have a key role that has expanded over time both in its scope and in its authority. The concept of operational control began with the desire to improve safety and enhance situational awareness for air carriers. Beginning with the earliest references to dispatchers, this paper explores the history of dispatchers from 1929 to the 1970s, operational control in the United States, and associated safety improvements. Drawing from both primary sources in the form of original aviation trade journals, aircraft accident reports, and books reviewing airline history, this paper examines how the dispatch profession has evolved and significantly enhanced aviation safety. The purpose of this study was to focus on the perceptions of an automated (unmanned) flight deck and its intended implementation in the U.S. airline industry. The objective was to understand fully autonomous aircraft's influence on commercial pilots, as well as investigate the effects on the U.S. airline industry and human-machine interaction. Commercial airline pilots, including ranks of both Captains and First Officers (FO) in Part 121 scheduled service, were the research population for this study. The sample population number was 15 U.S. airline pilots offering various diversity in age, gender, years of service, airline employer, and military or civilian flight experience. The semi-structured qualitative research consisted of developing a deeper understanding of the pilots' perceptions of the three-pronged approach: (1) the psychological barriers and motives of the pilot, (2) the differences in aircraft ground-based safety and training, and (3) pilots' understanding of the timeliness of entry for unmanned flight deck operations to reach FAA standards. The study consisted of participant interviews utilizing a series of ten structured and semi-structured interview questions. The findings concluded that pilots are aware of the workload changes that are present with implementing fully autonomous aircraft in the Part 121 category. Two themes became evident when discussing workload changes. First, the role of the pilot changes from a single flight focus to a multi-flight monitor. Secondly, as technology advances, the pilot's physical workload of hand flying an aircraft will constantly deteriorate. Furthermore, the advancement of a fully automated flight deck and its effects on the U.S. airline industry can potentially have significant impacts on the psychology of commercial airline pilots. While pilot responses varied based on individual experiences, attitudes, and adaptability, there were several psychological responses identified in this study, including (1) loss of control, (2) uncertainty toward technology, (3) job insecurity, and (4) adaptability. Last, the advancement of a fully autonomous flight deck will obviously create additional concerns for U.S. airline passengers. The most significant concerns for passengers included (1) safety, (2) trust, (3) passenger-pilot relationship, and (4) understanding of technology. This study aims to analyze the On-Time Performance on domestic flights in Indonesia using the Random Forest machine learning analysis method. The purpose of this study is to predict On-Time Performance on domestic flights with high accuracy. The data used in this study are questionnaire data and factors that affect On-Time Performance on domestic flights in Indonesia. The results showed that the Random Forest model can produce On-Time Performance predictions on domestic flights with a high level of accuracy. Factors such as ground handling services, weather, and technical operations have a significant influence on On-Time Performance on domestic flights. Based on the traditional TOPSIS method and 2-tuple linguistic Pythagorean fuzzy numbers (2TLPFNs), this paper builds a novel 2TLPF-TOPSIS method that combines cumulative prospect theory (CPT) to cope with the multiple attribute group decision-making (MAGDM). This new method takes into account the decision-makers' mind and the uncertainty of decision-making, and is more in line with the real decision-making environment. First, this paper briefly reviews some necessary theories related to PFS, as well as the calculation rules and comparison methods of 2TLPFNs. Then, since there is often subjective randomness when determining the weight, the entropy method is utilized to objectively determine the weight. After that, give the specific calculation steps of the new method. In order to show the effectiveness of the new method, apply it into a specific numerical example about evaluating airline business operations capability, and compare it with the other four different methods. The airline industry was severely hit by the COVID-19 crisis with an average demand decrease of about 64 % (IATA, April 2020), which triggered already several bankruptcies of airline companies all over the world. While the robustness of the world airline network (WAN) was mostly studied as a homogeneous network, we introduce a new tool for analyzing the impact of a company failure: the "airline company network" where two airlines are connected if they share at least one route segment. Using this tool, we observe that the failure of companies well connected with others has the largest impact on the connectivity of the WAN. We then explore how the global demand reduction affects airlines differently and provide an analysis of different scenarios if it stays low and does not come back to its pre-crisis level. Using traffic data from the Official Aviation Guide and simple assumptions about customer's airline choice strategies, we find that the local effective demand can be much lower than the average one, especially for companies that are not monopolistic and share their segments with larger companies. Even if the average demand comes back to 60 % of the total capacity, we find that between 46 % and 59 % of the companies could experience a reduction of more than 50 % of their traffic, depending on the type of competitive advantage that drives customer's airline choice. While most businesses actively adopt a data-driven approach for revenue management decisions, understanding how air travelers perceive and behave differently to pricing strategies is essential for yielding optimal financial outcomes. This study analyzes the loss aversion and diminishing sensitivity mechanisms of prospect theory in economy and business cabin classes. With rich longitudinal airfares, regression models and revenue data (15,868 observations from the top-10 aviation routes in the world) from 2014 to 2019, this study finds that lower-(higher-)than-expected airfares have a positive (negative) impact on revenue. When the effect of loss-coded and gain-coded tickets were compared, the extent to which passengers avoided losses (vs. welcomed gains) had a greater impact on revenue, supporting that loss aversion applies to the airline revenue, especially for business passengers. This study contributes to the further refinement of prospect theory by showing that the loss aversion and diminishing sensitivity mechanisms manifest differently in each cabin class. The COVID-19 pandemic and social unrest have focused considerable corporate attention on political risk. The disruptions to company operations are voluminous and diverse: entertainment and hospitality industry closures, airline industry cancellations, eviction moratoriums in residential real estate, international trade interruptions, manufacturing supply shortages, employee vaccination mandates, and ride-hailing service restrictions. Enterprise risk management (ERM) is the mechanism through which boards and their respective firms can manage complex political risks. In the current business climate, more companies should emphasize and integrate political risk oversight in their ERM programs. Although neglecting political risk may not trigger legal liability from regulators or courts, it can cause significant financial and reputational loss to the company. Contemporary corporate boards should not operate with political blinders; they must remain politically sensitive. Politics should not be avoided but managed in a nuanced way pursuant to effective board oversight of ERM. Board political sensitivity is an issue of risk management rather than "wokeness." Companies must contend with courts of law and the court of public opinion, each with its own distinct rules. Missteps in the latter may injure the corporation more seriously than unfavorable judgments in the former. The failure to manage political risk is not in the best interests of the corporation. This Article adds to the legal literature in three important areas. First, it situates political risk within the contemporary ERM discussion. Second, it re-examines how corporations engage with politics in the contemporary context. Finally, it contributes to theories that posit the large modern corporation as a quasi-public institution and argues, with some caveats, that it functions as a quasi-political institution, mandating more robust board oversight of political risks. Background: The African aviation liberalisation process began in 1988, following the liberalisation processes in Europe and the United States (US). However, by 2023, Intra-Africa air services are still reliant on the Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) by which international traffic rights are exchanged in terms of the 1944 Chicago Convention, a multilateral treaty. These impose restrictions on intra-African connectivity and are obstacles to liberalisation. African multilateral initiatives, such as the Yamoussoukro Declaration, have varying levels of implementation by African states. While liberalisation efforts have major impacts on airlines, thus far these have been led by government structures. Objective: The main objectives of the study are to determine the involvement of airlines in African liberalisation development and the likely impact of the liberalisation initiatives on airline operations. Method: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 intra-Africa airline executives from four Regional Economic Communities (REC), which would be impacted by liberalisation. Results: The study finds that airlines do not fully participate in the development of liberalisation initiatives. Although sometimes consulted, their associations are usually only granted observer status at deliberations and negotiations. The likely impacts of the initiatives to airlines include direct connectivity, and harmonised African air transport access. Conclusion: The lack of airline participation may be a key reason for the slow progress towards liberalisation and full deregulation in Africa. Airports are seen as a crucial component of infrastructure in the construction of modern cities in the Middle East, where aviation is recognized as a top priority in their development strategy. While the airline industry in the Middle has been investigated, there are no studies that explored the region's successful global aviation hubs from a national competitive advantage perspective. Therefore, this paper examines the macro environmental elements affecting a nation's competitiveness in the aviation industry using a mixed-methods approach, including Porter's notion of national competitive advantage and expert views. The analysis shows that while macro environmental factors such as geographical advantage, physical and intellectual infrastructure, and business attractiveness are important for a successful aviation development, they are not necessarily required to guarantee a hub status unless the governments are devoted to developing the sector. The main factor in the airline transport service being the reason for the choice is the place and time benefit it provides. Delays are negative situations that disrupt the time utility, reduce airlines' profits, cause congestion trouble and disrupt tariff plans. The first part of the study consists of information about delays and fundamental issues related to delays. In the second part, it has been tried to summarize the studies on the slot, which is directly related to the delays. In the last part, two airlines that adopted different business models, full-service carrier and low-cost carrier, were compared based on delay reasons. The study aims to determine the causes of delay and their predictive roles comparatively. We have used the multiple hierarchical regression model for this purpose. American Airlines and Southwest Airlines were selected as full-service carrier and low-cost carrier, respectively. We have determined that even though Southwest Airlines is a lowcost carrier, and more punctual than American Airlines, delays stemming from the carrier play a greater role in overall delays than American Airlines. The inefficiency of the aviation industry and the persistent rise in aviation hazards have been linked to weather phenomena. As a result, researchers are looking for better solutions to the problem. The study examined the impact of thunderstorms on flight operations at Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos. The data on thunderstorms and flight operations were sourced from Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) respectively. In order to meet the research target, descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation, and charts) and inferential statistics (Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) and Regression) were used. The significance level for all inferential analyses was set at 5% (0.05). The study revealed that 77.4% of thunderstorms occurred during the rainy season (April-October) while 22.6% occurred during the dry season (November-March). It also revealed some fluctuating movements of a thunderstorm in the study area. According to the findings, thunderstorms occur most frequently at the airport in June and less frequently in January and December. The study also discovered that thunderstorms at the airport are positively and significantly related to flight delays and cancellations, while the association between flight diversions and thunderstorm occurrence is positive but statistically insignificant. Furthermore, flight delays, flight diversions, and flight cancellations interact positively among themselves. The regression result of the study revealed that a 1% increase in thunderstorm occurrence leads to a 19.4% increase in flight delay, a 7.1% increase in flight cancellation, and a 4.3% increase in flight diversion. As a result, the study presented various regression models that may be utilized to make predictions. The study proposes consistent thunderstorm observation at the airport and steady forecasts using the regression models, based on the findings. However, it further recommends that pilots, air traffic controllers, and meteorologists be trained and retrained so that they can provide better and more efficient services. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the study, it is aimed to define the relationship between service quality indicators in airlines and to evaluate the relationships with a unique model (W-ISM) as a result of expert opinions. Based on the five dimensions of the SERVQUAL model, a questionnaire consisting of 33 indicators was prepared. A questionnaire was applied to 48 middle and upper level managers working in the airline industry to measure the importance level of the indicators. By applying weighting to the answers given, 33 indicators were reduced to 16 indicators. Afterwards, the direction of the relationship between the indicators was revealed by interviewing a total of four experts, one from the sector and three from the academy. In addition, these indicators have been interpreted with MICMAC analysis, which gives information about their driving and dependence power. It has been observed that all service quality indicators determined in airlines are related to each other. Airlines should carry out the necessary strategic developments and training on the indicator that the personnel at the base of the hierarchy have sufficient professional knowledge. Safety Management Systems (SMS) in the aviation industry are an increasingly important aspect of identifying hazards and managing the associated risks. While SMS has become commonplace and is often a regulatory requirement for air carriers, it remains voluntary for many other aviation service providers, such as airports. Over the past decade, commercial Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) operations near airports have significantly increased along with the development of Advanced Air Mobility operations. Airports face new and emerging safety challenges. However, safety is a precursor for public acceptance and proliferation of these next-generation aviation technologies. Safety practitioners consider SMS a key enabler in ensuring the safety of the National Airspace System and may assist airports in addressing these emerging hazards and risks. This research explored the current state of SMS at airports and their incorporation of UAS hazards and risks. This research utilized a mix of quantitative and qualitative methods, which included an extensive literature review and a survey of airport stakeholders. Research results suggest a need for further development and adoption of SMS at airports, including further maturation of UAS safety practices along with education and training. This study may assist airport stakeholders and regulators with further developing robust safety and risk management practices that support the safety of the next generation of aviation operations. A mixed methods study was conducted to identify common errors, causal factors, and corrective actions related to maintenance errors that have occurred on aircraft operated by major U.S. air carriers. An initial review of FAA compliance action letters obtained via FOIA for American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines identified errors and causal elements for categorization and further study. Study participants were randomly selected from FAA listings of certificated mechanics and asked to complete a survey. Quantitative data was acquired from participants who completed the survey, and qualitative data was acquired by interviewing a selection of those who completed the initial survey. The study found common errors with the completion of maintenance entries, handling of maintenance documents, the content of maintenance instructions, installation of parts, deviations from maintenance procedures, and maintenance steps or tasks that were overlooked or not performed. Dominant causal factors were identified as a failure to follow instructions or procedural requirements and maintenance instructions that contained inaccurate information or lacked sufficient detail. Dominant human factors identified in the study were complacency and lack of attention. Repetitive or simple tasks were identified as a contributor to complacency and the failure to follow instructions. Demands on mechanics to quickly return aircraft to service also contributed to the performance of maintenance without the use of instructions. In the context of stricter environmental regulations and more intense market competition, how to improve the efficiency of airlines has become a hot topic. In this paper, we construct a Network Slack-Based Measures (NSBM) model with double frontiers to evaluate airlines from an optimistic perspective, a pessimistic view, and the integration of optimistic and pessimistic viewpoints. The empirical study is based on data for 24 global airlines in 2018 and considers two situations when there is only crisp data and when there exists interval data. A three-stage network model (including operation stage, service stage, and sales stage) is constructed to explore the driving factors of airline efficiency.
