Abstract

The paper presents a straightforward modelling approach to compute the power loss distribution in GaN HEMT based three phase and three level (3L) active neutral point clamped (ANPC) inverters, for different pulse width modulated techniques. Conduction and switching losses averaged over each PWM switching period are analytically computed by starting from the operating conditions of the AC load and data of GaN power devices. The accuracy of the proposed analytical approach is evaluated through a circuit based power electronics simulation tool, applied to different carrier-based PWM strategies., Comment: 10 pages, 13 figures, 24th European Conference on Power Electronics and Applications ( IEEE EPE 2022 ECCE Europe). Abstract

The electron cyclotron (EC) system of ITER for the initial configuration is designed to provide 20MW of RF power into the plasma during 3600s and a duty cycle of up to 25% for heating and (co and counter) non-inductive current drive, also used to control the MHD plasma instabilities. The EC system is being procured by 5 domestic agencies plus the ITER Organization (IO). F4E has the largest fraction of the EC procurements, which includes 8 high voltage power supplies (HVPS), 6 gyrotrons, the ex-vessel waveguides (includes isolation valves and diamond windows) for all launchers, 4 upper launchers and the main control system. F4E is working with IO to improve the overall design of the EC system by integrating consolidated technological advances, simplifying the interfaces, and doing global engineering analysis and assessments of EC heating and current drive physics and technology capabilities. Examples are the optimization of the HVPS and gyrotron requirements and performance relative to power modulation for MHD control, common qualification programs for diamond window procurements, assessment of the EC grounding system, and the optimization of the launcher steering angles for improved EC access. Here we provide an update on the status of Europe’s contribution to the ITER EC system, and a summary of the global activities underway by F4E in collaboration with IO for the optimization of the subsystems.

Abstract

Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond windows are a crucial component in heating and current drive (H&CD) applications. In order to minimize the amount of reflected power from the diamond disc, its thickness must match the desired beam wavelength, thus proper targeting of the plasma requires movable beam reflectors. This is the case, for instance, of the ITER electron cyclotron H&CD system. However, looking at DEMO, the higher heat loads and neutron fluxes could make the use of movable parts close to the plasma difficult. The issue might be solved by using gyrotrons able to tune the beam frequency to the desired resonance, but this concept requires transmission windows that work in a given frequency range, such as the Brewster window. It consists of a CVD diamond disc brazed to two copper cuffs at the Brewster angle. The brazing process is carried out at about 800°C and then the temperature is decreased down to room temperature. Diamond and copper have very different thermal expansion coefficients, therefore high stresses build up during the cool down phase that might lead to failure of the disc. Considering also the complex geometry of the window with the skewed position of the disc, analyses are required in the first place to check its feasibility. The cool down phase was simulated by FEM structural analyses for several geometric and constraint configurations of the window. A study of indirect cooling of the window by water was also performed considering a HE11 mode beam. The results are here reported.

Abstract

We evaluate the performance of hybrid microwave resonators made by combining sputtered Nb thin films with Tungsten nanowires grown with a He-beam induced deposition technique. Depending on growth conditions, the nanowires have a typical width w [35 - 75] nm and thickness t [5 - 40] nm. We observe a high normal state resistance R [65 - 150] Ω / which together with a critical temperature T c [4 - 6] K ensures a high kinetic inductance making the resonator strongly nonlinear. Both lumped and coplanar waveguide resonators were fabricated and measured at low temperature exhibiting internal quality factors up to 3990 at 4.5 GHz in the few photon regime. Analyzing the wire length, temperature, and microwave power dependence, we extracted a kinetic inductance for the W nanowire of L K 15 pH / which is 250 times higher than the geometrical inductance, and a Kerr non-linearity as high as K W, He / 2 π = 200 ± 120 Hz / photon at 4.5 GHz. The nanowires made with the helium focused ion beam are thus versatile objects to engineer compact, high impedance, superconducting environments with a mask and resist free direct write process.

Abstract

This research investigates whether consumers express different levels of store patronage intention and expected amount of discount depending on the type of data they have to disclose to obtain a personalized price. Findings from two experiments-manipulating the type of data along with the type of incentive (Study 1) and the level of effort (Study 2)-reveal that behavioral (vs. biometric) data make customers perceive the outcome of the price personalization more equitable, thus lowering the privacy concern, and enhancing their sense of entitlement to receiving a benefit from the retailer. The impact of the type of data on perceptions of distributive justice changes as a function of the type of incentive provided to customers (Study 1) and the level of effort required to see the personalized price (Study 2). The collection of biometric data should be counterbalanced by a higher amount of personalized discount to lower consumers' privacy concerns.

49. Michel Pastoureau and the history of visual communication

Abstract

Despite early and ongoing calls for a systematic engagement with history, social semiotics has largely emphasized research on the synchronic rather than diachronic dimensions of meaning-making. And while the ‘instability’ of semiotic practices (see Kress’s Multimodality: A Social Semiotic Approach to Contemporary Communication, 2010) and the importance of semiotic change (see Van Leeuwen’s Introducing Social Semiotics, 2005) have become key themes in semiotics, there is still a need for a dynamic approach to the study of visual and multimodal communication, focusing not only on describing how meaning-making resources and their uses are changing, but also on why they are changing. In this article, the authors focus on the importance of the work of medieval historian Michel Pastoureau for the social semiotic study of visual communication, highlighting that this work can help us further refine and even rethink key social semiotic concepts such as modes and media, provenance, and context. Pastoureau’s work shows how we can make theoretical statements about instability, change and innovation more concrete and, ultimately, empirically based. His approach can also help us understand semiotic change and its relation to social and cultural (and also economic and technological) change more broadly, often with the aid of the (crucial) normative discourses that shape semiotic practices over time.

It focuses on “European” urban communication research as a way to explore what matters, both critically and theoretically, in media and communication studies of the urban. As a whole, the special forum aims to “decentre” existing assumptions regarding the urban locales, critical questions, and conceptual outlooks covered in each contribution-both from pre-constituted notions of “Europeanness” and from dominant approaches to the relationship between communication, media, and the urban.
