This paper seeks to find poetry in recreating, if not beauty, then aesthetic dimension in waste itself, to find perfection in imperfection itself. The underline hypothesis stems from questions such as what is the relationship between the automotive industry and the building industry? What if there exists a knowledge transfer mechanism between the two. What if the know-how of automakers be applied to the building industry? Beyond adaptive reuse of existing buildings and abandoned structures, the image of the city of Detroit as the model of industrialized American city could be reshaped by the knowledge of its memory. This manuscript provides a speculative approach to revitalize one of the most famous examples of an American industrial city. The approach attempts to highlight the importance of activating multi-industry pollination known as industrial symbiosis (IS) specifically between the automotive industry and the building industry using the city of Detroit as a case study. Ideas to test the vitality of this approach were explored and tested in a graduate architectural design studio where students were challenged with transforming the automotive industry by-products, waste streams, and flows into building products and façade systems.

Abstract In recent years, additive manufacturing (AM) has gained popularity in the aerospace, automobile, and medical industries due to its ability to produce complex profiles with minimal tolerances. Micro-milling is recommended for machining AM-based parts to improve surface quality and form accuracy. Therefore, the machinability of a titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V) manufactured using selective laser melting (SLM) is explored and compared to that of wrought Ti6Al4V in micro-milling. The experimental results reveal the surface topology, chip morphology, burr formation, and tool wear characteristics of both samples. The micro-milling of AM-based Ti6Al4V generates a surface roughness of 19.2 nm, which is 13.9% lower than that of wrought workpieces, and this component exhibits less tool wear. SLM-based Ti6Al4V produces continuous chips, while wrought Ti6Al4V yields relatively short chips. Additionally, SLM-fabricated Ti6Al4V exhibits smaller burrs after micro-milling than wrought Ti6Al4V. Despite the higher hardness of SLM-based Ti6Al4V, it demonstrates better machinability than wrought Ti6Al4V, resulting in better surface quality with lower tool wear levels and shorter burr heights. This study provides valuable insights into future research on postprocessing AM-based titanium parts, especially using micro-milling.

Abstract Genetic generalized epilepsy (GGE) including childhood absence epilepsy, juvenile absence epilepsy, juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME), and GGE with tonic–clonic seizures (TCS) (GGE-TCS), is genetically influenced with a two- to four- fold increased risk in the first-degree relatives of patients. Since large families with GGE are very rare, international studies have focused on sporadic GGE patients using whole exome sequencing, suggesting that GGE are highly genetically heterogeneous and rather involve rare or ultra-rare variants. Moreover, a polygenic mode of inheritance is suspected in most cases. We performed SNP microarrays and whole exome sequencing in 20 families from Sudan, focusing on those with at least four affected members. Standard genetic filters and Endeavour algorithm for functional prioritization of genes selected likely susceptibility variants in FAT1, DCHS1 or ASTN2 genes. FAT1 and DCHS1 are adhesion transmembrane proteins interacting during brain development, while ASTN2 is involved in dendrite development. Our approach on familial forms of GGE is complementary to large-scale collaborative consortia studies of sporadic cases. Our study reinforces the hypothesis that GGE is genetically heterogeneous, even in a relatively limited geographic area, and mainly oligogenic, as supported by the low familial penetrance of GGE and by the Bayesian algorithm that we developed in a large pedigree with JME. Since populations with founder effect and endogamy are appropriate to study autosomal recessive pathologies, they would be also adapted to decipher genetic components of complex diseases, using the reported bayesian model. Abstract By 2050, the need for poultry products is predicted to quadruple globally, mostly as a result of rising living standards. In the meantime, the quality of feed crops and forage, availability of water, poultry diseases, and poultry reproduction are all threatened by climate change, which poses a challenge to poultry production. This analysis assesses the effects of climate change on poultry production globally, the role that poultry production plays in climate change, and the particular tactics used by the poultry industry to adapt to and mitigate the effects of climate change. Climate variability will limit poultry production because it will raise the amount of water that chickens consume by a factor of three, increase the demand for agricultural lands due to the significant rise in production, and raise concerns about food security. After all, approximately one-third of the world's cereal harvest is used to feed animals, including poultry. In the meantime, 8% of the livestock sector’s emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) come from the poultry industry, which accelerates climate change. As a result, the poultry industry will play a significant role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing global food security. Therefore, assessments of the application of adaptation and mitigation measures specific to the region and poultry production system in use, as well as policies that encourage and facilitate the implementation of these measures, are necessary for converting to sustainable poultry production.

Abstract Intracranial pressure (ICP) is a physiological parameter that conventionally requires invasive monitoring for accurate measurement. Utilising multivariate predictive models, we sought to evaluate the utility of non-invasive, widely accessible MRI biomarkers in predicting ICP and their reversibility following cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) diversion. The retrospective study included 325 adult patients with suspected CSF dynamic disorders who underwent brain MRI scans within three months of elective 24-h ICP monitoring. Five MRI biomarkers were assessed: Yuh sella grade, optic nerve vertical tortuosity (VT), optic nerve sheath distension, posterior globe flattening and optic disc protrusion (ODP). The association between individual biomarkers and 24-h ICP was examined and reversibility of each following CSF diversion was assessed. The study focused on syenogranite and its altered variety, and specifically monitored the activities of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K using NaI(Tl) gamma-ray spectroscopy. Syenogranites in the study area in Egypt were investigated to determine their potential use in industries such as ornamental stones and ceramics. The main outcrops in the study area consist of metasediments, metavolcanics, metagabbro, syn-to late-orogenic granites, and post-orogenic granites (syenogranites). There are also numerous dikes and veins of various shapes and compositions that have intruded and penetrated all the older rocks in the area. The mean activity (± standard deviation, SD) of these radioelements in the granites is 226Ra (63 ± 71 Bq kg−1), 232Th (76 ± 170 Bq kg−1), and 40K (1248 ± 532 Bq kg−1) were found to be greater than the world average. The radiological hazards are mostly attributed to the γ-rays emitted by granitic rocks. The granites studied in this study deviate from international standards mainly due to the presence of minerals containing radioelements such as zircon, allanite, monazite, sphene titanite, apatite, thorite, samarskite, fergusonite, xenotime, columbite, apatite and fluorite. Abstract The growing concern and limitations for existing lubricants have driven the need for biolubricants, extensively proposed as the most suitable and sustainable lubricating oils. Biolubricant refers to lubricants that quickly biodegrade and are non-toxic to humans and aquatic habitats. Over the last decade, there has been a significant increase in the production of biolubricants due to the rising demand for replacing petroleum-based lubricants with those derived from renewable sources like vegetable oils and lipase that are used in various applications. In this study biodiesel (FAME) produced from blending animal fats and waste cooking was used as a raw material with ethylene glycol for biolubricant production using a transesterification reaction in the presence of calcium oxide which considers the newest and novel part as there is no production of biolubricant from animal fats and waste cooking oil in previous researches. The reaction parameters of biolubricant production were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) with the aid of Box Behnken Design (BBD) to study the effect of independent variables on the yield of biolubricant. These variables are temperature ranging from (100–150 °C), reaction time ranging from 1 to 4 h, and FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Ester) to alcohol molar ratio ranging from (2:1) to (4:1). The highest biolubricant yield is 91.56% at a temperature of 141 °C, a FAME/alcohol molar ratio of 2:1, and 3.3 h. Various analyses were performed on the produced biolubricant at the optimum conditions. The results include a pour point of -9 °C, a flash point of 192 °C, a kinematic viscosity at 40 °C of 10.35 cSt, a viscosity index of 183.6, an ash content of 0.76 wt.%, and a carbon residue of 1.5 wt.%, comparing favorably with the ISO VG 10 standard. The production process of biolubricant was simulated with Aspen Plus version 11 using a Non-Random Two-Liquid (NRTL) fluid package. The simulation results indicated that the production process can be applied on an industrial scale. Economic analysis was performed on the biolubricants production plant. The total capital investment was $12.7 M with a payback period of 1.48 years and an internal rate of return (IRR) of 67.5% indicating the suitability and profitability of the biolubricant production.

Abstract A complete understanding of groundwater dynamics and its interaction with surface water under the impact of agricultural activities is vital for local agriculture, ecology, and residents of dry regions, which is not commonly recognized in arid areas. This research outlines the geochemical characteristics, recharge sources, and potential factors impacting groundwater quality in a new land reclamation located in the small basin of Abu Mina, which is part of the Western Nile Delta region.1 Thirty-one groundwater samples and two surface water samples were collected in 2021 to represent the Pleistocene aquifer and were subjected to multivariate statistical, hydrochemical, and stable isotope analyses. Data analysis demonstrates that Na+ > Ca2+ > Mg2+ > K+ and SO4 2– > Cl– > HCO3 – > NO3 – are the predominant cations and anions, respectively. Groundwater salinity ranged from 465.60 to 6455.18 mg/l, with slightly alkaline. Most of the water samples fall into one of three types of facies: Ca–Cl, Na–Cl, and Mixed Ca–Mg–Cl, in decreasing order. The meteoric genesis index (r2) indicates that deep meteoric water percolation dominates the Pleistocene aquifer. The aquiline diagrams, correlation matrix, and different ionic ratios indicate that evaporation, reverse ion exchange reactions, and the dissolution of carbonate and silicate minerals are the main processes governing groundwater chemistry. Factor analysis (FA) indicated that three factors explain groundwater hydrochemistry, accounting for 71.98% of the total variance. According to the rotating components matrix (F1–F3), the chemistry of the Quaternary aquifer is principally affected by evaporation, ion exchange reactions, and anthropogenic influences. Additionally, salinity increases due to the return flow of irrigation activities and mixing between old and recent water. The stable isotopes (δ18O and δ2H) indicate that the Quaternary aquifer receives groundwater recharge through the return flow of excess irrigation and canal seepage. Under desert reclamation conditions, groundwater salinization processes should be given special consideration. All groundwater samples are appropriate for agricultural irrigation based on the Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR), Permeability Index (PI), Percent Sodium (%Na), and Residual Sodium Carbonate (RSC).

Background: The liver is crucial for maintaining normal metabolism in the body. Various substances, such as toxic chemicals, drugs, and alcohol, can damage hepatocyte cells, leading to metabolic imbalances. Aim: The experiment aimed to determine the efficacy of Lagenaria siceraria seed oil (LSS) as a hepatoprotective agent against acute hepatotoxicity triggered by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). Methods: A total of 20 rats were randomly separated into four groups. The control group: rats received 2 ml of distilled water orally, followed by 1.25 ml of olive oil intraperitoneally (i.p.) after 30 minutes. CCL4 group: rats were given a single intraperitoneal dose of 1.25 ml/kg b.w. of CCl4 in a 1:1 mixture with olive oil. Silymarin group: received 100 mg of silymarin per kg of b.w. diluted in 2 ml of distilled water orally, followed by CCl4 treatment after 30 minutes. LSS oil group: received LSS oil at 3g/kg b.w. orally, followed by CCl4 treatment after 30 minutes. Blood samples were collected to assess liver enzymes (AST, ALT and ALP), proteins and bilirubin fractions, and redox status (catalase, reduced glutathione (GSH), and malondialdehyde (MDA)) were assessed in hepatic tissues. Changes in liver histopathological examination were also evaluated. Results: In CCl4-treated rats, there was a significant increase in serum liver marker enzyme activity (ALP, AST and ALT) along with a significant elevation (p < 0.05) in total bilirubin, indirect bilirubin, and direct bilirubin compared to the control rats. However, all these parameters decreased in the CCl4+ Silymarin and CCl4+LSS groups compared to CCl4-treated rats. There was a significant decline in total protein level and serum albumin in all experimental groups compared to the control, while globulin levels significantly increased in all experimental groups. There was a significant (p < 0.05) reduction in the level of GSH and catalase, with an increase in MDA level in CCl4 rats compared to other rats. Histopathological investigation of the LSS-treated group showed a hepatoprotective effect against CCl4. Abstract Background Breast cancer (BC) is the most prevalent cancer and the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women globally. Cysteine protease cathepsin-B has been implicated in various human malignancies and is involved in malignancy progression and metastasis. This study aimed to evaluate the circulating levels of cathepsin-B, interleukin-6 (IL-6), and CA15-3, a cancer antigen, as biomarkers for tumors in women with both localized and metastatic BC. The study employed a case-control design, enrolling 108 participants categorized into three groups: healthy individuals, those with localized BC, and those with metastatic BC. The relative mRNA expression of cathepsin-B in blood samples was assessed using qRT-PCR. Additionally, serum levels of IL-6 and CA15-3 were quantified using ELISA. Abstract Introduction Intracranial fungal infections’ (IcFIs) varying clinical manifestations lead to difficulties in diagnosis and treatment. African populations are disproportionately affected by the high burden of the disease. There is a lack of clarity as to the diagnostic and treatment modalities employed across the continent. In this review, we aim to detail the management, and outcome of IcFIs across Africa. Methods This scoping review was conducted using the Arksey and O'Malley framework. MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, African Index Medicus, and African Journals Online were searched for relevant articles from database inception to August 10th, 2021. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis extension for Scoping Reviews guidelines were used to report the findings of the review. Results Of the 5,779 records identified, 131 articles were included. The mean age was 35.6 years, and the majority (56.4%) were males. The majority (n = 8,433/8,693, 97.0%) of IcFIs presented as a meningitis, the most common communicable predisposing factor of IcFIs was HIV/AIDS (n = 7,815/8,693, 89.9%), and the most common non-communicable risk factor was diabetes mellitus (n = 32/8,693, 0.4%). Cryptococcus species was the most common (n = 8,428/8,693, 97.0%) causative organism. The most commonly used diagnostic modality was cerebrospinal (CSF) cultures (n = 4,390/6,830, 64.3%) for diffuse IcFIs, and MRI imaging (n = 12/30, 40%) for focal IcFIs. The most common treatment modality was medical management with antifungals only (n = 4,481/8,693, 51.6%). The most commonly used antifungal agent in paediatric, and adult patients was amphotericin B and fluconazole dual therapy (51.5% vs 44.9%). The overall mortality rate was high (n = 3,475/7,493, 46.3%), and similar for both adult and paediatric patients (47.8% vs 42.1%). Conclusion Most IcFIs occurred in immunosuppressed individuals, and despite the new diagnostic techniques, CSF culture was mostly used in Africa. Antifungals regimens used was similar between children and adults. The outcome of IcFIs in Africa was poor for both paediatric and adult patients.

Abstract Background Post-stroke psychosis (PSP) is a rare but serious neuropsychiatric condition characterized by delusions and/or hallucinations following a stroke. Despite its impact on prognosis and quality of life, PSP remains underdiagnosed and undertreated, with limited data on its prevalence and risk factors. The purpose of this study is to assess the prevalence and determinants of post-stroke psychosis (PSP), as well as to compare PSP and non-PSP patients in terms of improvement and daily living outcomes. This nested case–control study included 2,624 acute stroke patients from a university hospital between May 2017 and April 2022. Patients who developed PSP within 6 months post-stroke were identified as cases (n = 108), and 119 patients without PSP were randomly selected as controls. Comprehensive assessments included clinical, laboratory, and imaging evaluations at baseline. After 6 months, follow-up evaluations were conducted, including neurological examinations, psychiatric assessments, and stroke severity assessments using the Barthel index (BI). The psychiatric assessments included the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale for depression and the Mini-Mental State Examination for cognitive status. Results The prevalence of PSP was 5.4%. risk factors significantly associated with PSP included older age, male patients, lower education level (≤ 5 years), hemiplegia, sphincter affection, cortical lesion, brain atrophy, small vessel disease, ischemic stroke, post-stroke dementia, and seizures. Non-specified psychosis and delusional disorder were the most common psychosis subtypes. There was a significantly higher percentage of excellent patients in the non-PSP group compared to those who had PSP regarding the observed improvement in the patient's condition. Also, there is a higher percentage of deteriorated patients in the PSP group (46.6%) compared to another group (18.9%) regarding BI. Conclusion PSP is a prevalent post-stroke complication associated with distinct risk factors and poor functional outcomes. Early screening and identification of high-risk patients, along with multidisciplinary management strategies, are crucial for optimizing recovery and quality of life in stroke survivors.

In this study, the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC), which is responsible for water pollution, was investigated in an aqueous solution by using two types of nanoparticles (NPs) based on green synthesis of ZnO NPs and CuO NPs as photocatalysts. Eucalyptus plant extract was chosen as a good reductant and capping agent because of its cost-effectiveness, nontoxic characteristics and ease of usage. Different molar ratios of Cu:Zn (1:3, 1:6, 1:9 and 1:12) were prepared, and then these ratios were evaluated to select the effective ratio for removing TC. The 1:6 ratio demonstrated the best photocatalytic performance, degrading 72.15% of TC at the ZnO/CuO nanocomposite (NC) dose of 0.5 g/L, an initial concentration of 10 mg/L, pH 7, an agitation speed of 300 rpm, a temperature of 25 °C, UV intensities of 15 W/m2 and a contact time of 180 min. The synthesis of NCs was characterised using different analysis methods. CuO/ZnO characteristics were investigated using several analytical techniques, including FTIR, FESEM, EDAX, AFM, BET and zeta potential analysis. The NP’s structure, morphology, thermal behaviour, chemical composition and optical properties were analysed. The FESEM images verified that the (1:6) CuO/ZnO NPs calcined and not calcined, with sizes of 13.92 and 26.73 nm, respectively, were crystalline and spherical. The quantity of TC degradation by metal oxide NCs was investigated using UV–Vis spectroscopy. This method is sustainable and environmentally benign because it synthesises both NPs from plant sources. These hybrid nanoparticles may be used to treat other pharmaceuticals that are hazardous to reduce pollution in water.

Fuel cell is one of the promising technologies in the production of clean energy that does not have the pollution of fossil fuels. In this technology, the chemical energy resulting from the reaction is directly converted into electrical energy. This system does not follow the Carnot cycle, so it does not have the limitations of internal combustion engines and has multiple efficiency compared to them. This system consists of two electrodes and an electrolyte in between and has different types according to the type of electrolyte. One of the factors that reduce the optimal performance of fuel cells is polarization, which is divided into three categories: ohmic, kinetic, and activation. Today, one of the newest energy production and conversion systems is the fuel cell technology, which is compatible with the environment and renewable resources. It has attracted the attention of scientists. Fuel cells are devices that convert the chemical energy of fuel directly into electrical energy. A fuel cell is like a battery, but it can provide electrical energy for a longer period of time than a battery. This paper Review, a comprehensive overview of fuel cell science and engineering with emphasis on hydrogen fuel cells. The document provides a concise, up-to-date overview of fuel cell fundamentals, their history, competing technologies, types, advantages and challenges, applications and markets for portable, stationery and transportation, current status of research and development, future goals, design levels, thermodynamic and electrochemical principles, system evaluation factors, prospects and outlook. The latest data from industry and academia was used, and the connection between fuel cell fundamentals and applications was emphasized throughout the manuscript.

Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, emerging evidence showed that the provision and use of a range of health services, including sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services, were affected. Otherwise, there was little evidence on whether and how they were adapted to maintain the access of different population groups, including adolescents. The study aims to provide an overview of adaptations to adolescent sexual and reproductive health (ASRH) services carried out during the early phases of the pandemic in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The Human Reproduction Program (HRP) at the World Health Organization (WHO) called upon WHO and United Nations Populations Fund (UNFPA) regional offices to reach out to organisations that provided ASRH services to submit analytic case studies using a short-form survey. The study team charted information from 36 case studies and performed a content analysis. Results show that the adaptations covered a wide array of SRH services that were provided to a diverse group of adolescents. Most adaptations focused on SRH education and access to contraception in comparison to other SRH services. Over half of the case studies included mental health services, most of which were not provided before the pandemic. The adaptations varied between being face-to-face, remote, digital, and non-digital. Most adaptations complemented a pre-existing service and were nimble, feasible, and acceptable to the targeted adolescents. Lessons learned from this study could be extrapolated into other humanitarian settings and rapid responses for future public health emergencies, provided that rigorous evaluation takes place.

AbstractNew thymol–3,4-disubstitutedthiazole hybrids were synthesised as dual COX-2/5-LOX inhibitors. Compounds 6b, 6d, 6e, and 6f displayed in vitro inhibitory activity against COX-2 (IC50= 0.037, 0.042, 0.046, and 0.039 µM) nearly equal to celecoxib (IC50= 0.045 µM). 6b, 6d, and 6f showed SI (379, 341, and 374, respectively) higher than that of celecoxib (327). 6a–l elicited in vitro 5-LOX inhibitory activity higher than quercetin. 6a–f, 6i–l, 7a, and 7c possessed in vivo inhibition of formalin induced paw edoema higher than celecoxib. 6a, 6b, 6f, 6h–l, and 7b showed gastrointestinal safety profile as celecoxib and diclofenac sodium in the population of fasted rats. Induced fit docking and molecular dynamics simulation predicted good fitting of 6b and 6f without changing the packing and globularity of the apo protein. In conclusion, 6b and 6f achieved the target goal as multitarget inhibitors of inflammation.

Fatigue has been reported to be the most common symptom experienced by patients receiving hemodialysis (HD) therapy. Fatigue can lead to a reduction in their ability to engage in both routine and self-care activities, which can negatively affect their self-confidence and quality of life. This study aimed to determine the level of fatigue and the factors that affecting its level among patients receiving uHD. Methods: A cross-sectional design was utilized to explore the level of fatigue among patients receiving maintenance HD using the Mul-tidimensional Assessment of Fatigue (MAF) scale. Solar air heaters are considered an important sustainable technology that offers hot air for different applications. This study investigates the effect of using double triangular fins with different arrangements on the performance of solar air heaters. An experimental investigation within the framework of energy, exergy, economic, and environmental analyses was carried out in this study. Four collectors, namely flat plate collector, inline double triangular fins collector, staggered double triangular fins collector, and inclined staggered double triangular collector, were designed and developed to achieve the goal of this investigation. The experiments were conducted on various winter days in Iraq under various airflow rates. All the evaluation parameters were found to be highly sensitive to solar radiation and airflow rate. The results of the finned collectors were compared to those of the flat one and were compared against each other. It was observed that integrating the fins into the collector improved the performance compared to the collector without fins. Moreover, the inclined staggered double triangular collector outperformed the other collectors under all the scenarios. It offered promising performance in terms of daily thermal efficiency, exergy efficiency, thermal enhancement factor, and overall annual energy production, surpassing the flat plate collector by 20.7, 52.7 %, 29.2 %, and 20.7 %, respectively, at respective airflow rates and solar radiation. Furthermore, using such a collector reduced up to 14.3 tons of CO2 emissions. The findings of this study underscore the benefit of using double triangular fins on the collector and may guide the innovative design of solar air heaters in the future.

The development of modern life requires new energy sources, and one of this energy is renewable solar energy uses in solar chimney for natural ventilation, but at the present time it is not greatly invested, taking into account the weather conditions of the region and the physical characteristics of solar radiation and air in the area in which the study will be conducted. The current study was carried out in Basrah city- Iraq, at longitude 47.749° and latitude 30.568°, where the solar chimney was facing south. The investigation was conducted using both theoretical and experimental studied. In the theoretical study, the solar chimney with the room in the presence and absence of PCM was simulated numerically using the finite volume method using the soft package ANSYS-Fluent/2021/R2. The effect of different tilt angles (α = 30°, 45°, and 60°), solar chimney air gap (gab = 10 cm, 15 cm, and 20 cm), and PCM basin thickness (tPCM = 3 cm, 4 cm, and 5 cm) were investigated. The results were presented in the form of contours of the distribution of streamlines, velocity, temperature, and liquid fraction of the solar chimney with the room, rate of temperature of the absorber plate with time and the rate of temperature of the PCM (TPCM) with time, rate of air change per hour (ACH). As for the experimental side, the device was built, and the intensity of solar radiation was studied for several days on 30 Sep. and 15 Oct. 2023, the temperature distribution rate of the absorbent plate over time, the PCM temperature rate, and the air change per hour (ACH). The theoretical results were compared with the experimental results, where there was good agreement, and the theoretical comparison was also made with several researchers. Significant results showed that the optimal ratio of the air gap width of the solar chimney is 15 cm, the inclination angle of the solar chimney α = 30°, and the thickness of the PCM basin (tPCM = 4 cm) to obtain the maximum ventilation rate. The thickness of the PCM basin = 4 cm gives the largest liquid fraction along time and maximum average temperature of the absorber plate. On the experimental, it was found that PCM convert into the liquid phase after its melting point, which is 340 K, after 12 noon, and the highest value of ACH reached 37 on September 30/2023 at midday.

Abstract Background Emergency department (ED) nurses are exposed to the risk of secondary traumatic stress (STS), which poses a threat not only to nurses’ health and psychological well-being but also adversely affects the execution of their professional duties. The quality and outcome of their nursing services are negatively affected by STS. Purpose The purpose of this study is to comprehensively investigate the prevalence and intensity of Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS) among Emergency Department (ED) nurses. It aims to identify and analyze the socio-demographic, occupational, and psychological factors that influence the severity and variation of STS experienced by these nurses. Methods The study utilized a sequential explanatory mixed methods approach, including two phases. Phase 1 employed a cross-sectional study design, utilizing a convenience sample of 181 nurses to explore the levels of STS and the factors associated with it. Following this, Phase 2 was structured as a qualitative descriptive study, which involved conducting semi-structured interviews with a purposefully selected group of ten ED nurses. Data collection took place at three major hospitals in Saudi Arabia during the period from January to June 2022. Results A total of 181 participants were included in the study. The mean STSS score reported by the nurses was 51 (SD = 13.23) out of the maximum possible score of 85, indicating severe STS among ED nurses. Factors associated with an increase in the levels of STS among ED nurses included being female, older in age, married, possessing higher education and experience, having a positive relationship with colleagues, receiving organisational support, and dealing with a higher number of trauma cases. Several themes emerged from the qualitative interviews including: ED Characteristics: Dual Impact on STS, Emotional Resonance and Vulnerability, Personal Life Stressors, The Ability to Cope, and Social Support. Conclusion and implications for practice Future strategies and interventions targeting STS should be prioritized to effectively manage its impact on ED nurses. It is crucial to develop targeted interventions that address the specific factors contributing to STS, as identified in this study. Additionally, these findings aim to enhance awareness among nursing administrators, managers, and supervisors about the critical factors associated with STS. This awareness is essential for accurately assessing and developing interventions that mitigate STS among nursing staff.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine the distribution of rotavirus and adenovirus in pediatric patients evaluated for viral gastroenteritis in a hospital in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia for 22 years. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study based in a secondary healthcare center in Saudi Arabia. Laboratory and demographic data were collected from hospital records for all pediatric patients (up to 14 years old) evaluated for viral gastroenteritis by rotavirus/adenovirus antigen detection kit from January 2000 to December 2022. Data were analyzed utilizing SPSS version 28.0. Categorical data were presented as frequency and percentages, whereas mean and standard deviations were computed for continuous variables. Chi-square test and t-test were used to determine statistical significance. RESULTS: The overall yields of antigen detection were 13.6% for rotavirus and 2.6% for adenovirus. Coinfection with both viruses was documented in 0.5% of the study population. Rotavirus was persistently detected in the past two decades with varying frequency, but the detection of adenovirus showed intervals of at least three consecutive years of zero confirmed cases. Before 2013, when the rotavirus vaccine was introduced in Saudi Arabia, rotavirus was much more prevalent than adenovirus (30% compared to 3.8% in 2010), but they became equally prevalent a decade after the introduction of the vaccine. Rotavirus gastroenteritis showed three different peaks in the year, in March, July, and December. Each peak was followed by a gradual decrease in prevalence before the next peak. Adenovirus, in contrast, was detected consistently around the year at rates between 2% and 5%. CONCLUSION: Rotavirus and adenovirus gastroenteritis have changed in prevalence in the past two decades. We found distinct seasonal patterns associated with rotavirus and adenovirus gastroenteritis. The utilization of virological testing for pediatric gastroenteritis with syndromic testing panels is to be encouraged to improve the knowledge of the true prevalence of enteric viruses.

Abstract Introduction Postoperative complications pose significant challenges in cardiac surgery and with the evolution of selenium as a potential anti-inflammatory agent, some studies reported its inefficiency. Thus, we conducted our meta-analysis to evaluate the impact of selenium supplementation on cardiac surgery patients. Methods Different databases such as PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library from inception till January 2024 were searched identifying a total of seven randomized-controlled trials involving selenium supplementation after cardiac surgery. Risk ratio (RR) and Mean difference (MD) were calculated with a 95% confidence interval (CI). Results The selenium intervention significantly raised the incidence of Acute Kidney injury (RR 0.76; 95% CI: 0.59, 0.98; P = 0.04) while significantly reducing the duration of hospital stay (MD -1.33; 95% CI: -2.51, -0.16; P = 0.03) and postoperative CRP levels (SMD -0.18; 95% CI: -0.34, -0.02; P = 0.03). The effect of selenium intervention on days spent in ICU (MD -0.01; 95% CI: -0.28, 0.25; P = 0.92), mortality (RR 1.07; 95% CI: 0.84, 1.37; P = 0.57) and incidence of hospital acquired infections (RR 0.98; 95% CI: 0.76, 1.26; P = 0.88) is insignificant. Conclusion Selenium supplementation did not significantly reduce major postoperative complications in cardiac surgery patients. However, its ability to modulate inflammation, as reflected in decreased C-reactive protein levels, highlights its potential role in managing the inflammatory response. Future investigations should focus on optimized selenium supplementation strategies in conjunction with other antioxidants to enhance its benefits.

Abstract Background Literature suggests colonic resection and primary anastomosis (RPA) instead of Hartmann’s procedure (HP) for the treatment of left-sided colonic emergencies. We aim to evaluate the surgical options globally used to treat patients with acute left-sided colonic emergencies and the factors that leading to the choice of treatment, comparing HP and RPA. Methods This is a prospective, international, multicenter, observational study registered on ClinicalTrials.gov. A total 1215 patients with left-sided colonic emergencies who required surgery were included from 204 centers during the period of March 1, 2020, to May 31, 2020. with a 1-year follow-up. Results 564 patients (43.1%) were females. The mean age was 65.9 ± 15.6 years. HP was performed in 697 (57.3%) patients and RPA in 384 (31.6%) cases. Complicated acute diverticulitis was the most common cause of left-sided colonic emergencies (40.2%), followed by colorectal malignancy (36.6%). Abstract Background Valve infective endocarditis (IE) is a potentially life-threatening condition that affects patients’ livelihoods. Current surgical options in mitral valve IE include mitral valve repair (MVr) or replacement (MVR). While each procedure boasts its merits, doubt remains as to which type of surgery is superior. Methods We searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane literature databases for studies comparing MVR and MVr in mitral valve IE. Any randomized controlled trial (RCT) or observational studies that compare MVR vs. MVr in mitral valve IE were eligible. Background: This study presents a comprehensive genomic analysis of NDM and OXA-48-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae in the Western region of Saudi Arabia, traversed by tens of millions of Muslims from various countries annually. This significant influx of visitors invariably leads to the spread and diversity of MDR bacteria. Methods: Genome sequencing was performed using MiSeq system of 29 CPKP isolates that were NDM and OXA-48-positive isolated from nosocomial infections and demonstrated resistance to most antibiotics, including carbapenems. Results: WGS analysis showed that 12 (41.3%) isolates co-harbored blaOXA-48, blaCTX-M-15 and blaNDM genes. Notably, 16 (55.1%) isolates were identified as high-risk clone ST14, with 50% of these isolates co-harbored blaOXA-48, blaNDM and blaCTX-M-15 genes. All ST14 isolates were identified as capsular genotype KL2 and O1/O2v1 antigen with yersiniabactin locus ypt 14 carried by ICEKp5. The two isolates were identified as ST2096/KL64 hypervirulent K. pneumoniae (hvKp) clone harboring several virulence factors, including the regulator of the mucoid phenotype rmpA2 and aerobactin (iuc-1). Interestingly, two of the hvKp ST383/KL30 isolates were resistant to all tested antimicrobials except colistin and tigecycline, and simultaneously carried numerous ESBLs and carbapenemase genes. These isolates also harbor several virulence factors such as rmpA1, rmpA2, carried on KpVP-1, and aerobactin (iuc-1). Conclusion: this study provides insights into the spread and prevalence of high-risk clones of CPKP in the Western region of Saudi Arabia. The ST14 high-risk clone appears to be the predominant CPKP clone in this region, posing a significant threat to public health. This study also reports the presence of two globally disseminated hypervirulent K. pneumoniae (hvKp) clones, namely ST2096 and ST383. Therefore, it is essential to improve surveillance and implement strict infection control measures in this region, which receives a substantial number of visitors to effectively monitor and reduce the spread of high-risk clones of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, including CPKP.

Accurately identifying the kind and amount of dissolved metal salts in wastewater used in oil refining processes is an iconic feature of ultraviolet and visible absorption spectroscopy. This method relies on the dissolved metal salts' ability to absorb light at certain wavelengths after reacting with it. The experiments were conducted in a lab setting with a broadband source (200-800 nm) to measure the absorbance of dissolved element salts and precisely identify the lowest concentration up to 2 ppm. A mixture of the mineral salts from oil refining operations was prepared and diluted to different concentrations using a standard solution. This allowed us to study and compare this result with the absorbance behavior of the wastewater from the Al-Dora Refinery. The two results reinforced that we can accurately estimate the detection parameters for the lowest water contamination. These materials are lead nitrate (PbNO3), phenol, calcium carbonate (CaCO3), sodium chloride (NaCl2), sulfide (SO4), and nitrate (NO3). At wavelengths of 340, 404, and 741 nm, the concentrations (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, and 100) ppm were found, and for the concentration of 10ppm, the absorbance (0.15323, 0.15326, and 0.14685) was found, respectively. The process that has been tested with varying concentrations is considered and simulates the variation in river water concentrations caused by the river's water level and flow rate changes by the effect of rain abundance and thawing. It is fast, accurate data analysis, and a lower cost compared with the other chemical analysis and conventional methods.

In this study, the stir casting technique (SCT) was applied to form aluminium (Al) nanocomposites with various weight percentages of nanotitanium dioxide powder (TiO2). The structural, mechanical, and corrosion properties of nanocomposites were investigated. The microstructure was taken by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while the crystal structure of the specimens was obtained using X-ray diffraction (XRD). In addition, nanocomposites were immersed in 0.5 M HCl solution for potentiodynamic and corrosion rate measurements. The results showed that the best specimen is 0.03%, as it increased by 23% for hardness, but the tensile strength increased to 52%. Whereas, SEM images of the specimens reinforced with nanoparticles showed a clear homogeneity and diffusion of nanoparticles in the matrix. So, the addition of TiO2 nanoparticles to aluminium metal improved the hardness and tensile strength of the nanocomposites appreciably. The corrosion results showed that nanocomposite materials have higher corrosion resistance than Al7075-based composite materials.

BackgroundDrug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) impacts a significant portion, one-third, of individuals diagnosed with epilepsy. In such cases, exploring non-pharmacological interventions are crucial, with the ketogenic diet (KD) standing out as a valuable option. KD, a high-fat and low-carb dietary approach with roots dating back to the 1920s for managing DRE, triggers the formation of ketone bodies and modifies biochemistry to aid in seizure control. Recent studies have increasingly supported the efficacy of KD in addressing DRE, showcasing positive outcomes. Furthermore, while more research is needed, limited data suggests that KD May also be beneficial for specific genetic epilepsy syndromes (GESs).ObjectiveThis study aimed to assess the short-term efficacy of KD among pediatric patients diagnosed with GESs.Materials and methodsThis is a multi-center retrospective analysis of pediatric patients with GESs diagnosed using next-generation sequencing. The enrolled patients followed the keto-clinic protocol, and the KD efficacy was evaluated at 3, 6, and 12-month intervals based on seizure control and compliance. The collection instrument included demographic, baseline, and prognostic data. The collected data was coded and analyzed promptly.ResultsWe enrolled a cohort of 77 patients with a mean current age of 7.94 ± 3.83 years. The mean age of seizure onset was 15.5 months. Notably, patients experienced seizures at a younger age tended to have less positive response to diet. Overall, 55 patients responded favorably to the diet (71.4%) while 22 patients (28.6%) showed no improvement. Patients with genetic etiology showed a significantly more favorable responses to the dietary intervention. Patients with Lennox–Gastaut syndrome showed the most significant improvement (14/15) followed by patients with Dravet syndrome (6/8), and West syndrome (3/4). The number of used anti-seizure medications also played a significant role in determining their response to the diet. While some patients experienced mild adverse events, the most common being constipation, these occurrences were not serious enough to necessitate discontinuation of the diet.ConclusionThe study revealed a high improvement rate in seizure control, especially among younger patients and those with later seizure onset. The success of dietary treatment hinges greatly on early intervention and the patient’s age. Certain genetic mutations responded favorably to the KD, while efficacy varied among various genetic profiles.

Introduction: Liposarcoma of the bone is an extremely rare and aggressive primary bone tumor. We aimed to review all liposarcoma cases in the literature and present our new young female patient with liposarcoma. Methods: of literature review and case presentation: Electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science (WOS), and Google Scholar) were searched to retrieve the related cases on liposarcoma. Extraction for important clinical data was done independently by two authors to present age, gender, site, histological type, the treatment used, and clinical outcomes of survival or recurrence. In our presented case, we followed the CARE checklist. Results: A total of 33 patients were included in the literature search: 19 (57.6 %) male and 14 (42.4 %) female, with a mean age of 42.85 ± 18.83. Seven patients (21.2 %) were less than the age of 20 years old. The most frequent subtype was primary pleomorphic liposarcoma. Most treatment options were resection, excision, and amputation with or without chemotherapy. Recurrence was reported in four cases. However, most patients died due to late diagnosis with distant organ metastasis. Case presentation: we report a case of primary pleomorphic liposarcoma of the left distal femur of a twelve-year-old female. The patient presented with a painful lower thigh swelling, not responding to analgesics. Imaging studies were done and showed a lesion extended across the distal physeal plate laterally and centrally with scattered lesions medially. Histologically, the tumor showed a uniformly pleomorphic liposarcomatous pattern with extensive necrosis. Genetic analysis showed frequent mutations in LATS2, CREBBP, and SMAD2 genes in addition to deletions and amplifications in different genetic pathways. Two cycles of MAP chemotherapy were completed before tumor excision and total left knee replacement, followed by two other MAP cycles postoperatively. Multiple lung metastases were detected on chest CT 10 months postoperatively. The patient died 13 months postoperatively. Conclusion: Primary pleomorphic liposarcoma can present as sclerotic and aggressive malignant bone tumors at an early age. Excision, MAP, and MAPI chemotherapy are not enough to treat this tumor.

The fixed orthodontic appliance may enhance devious pathogens and increase biofilm accumulation around the orthodontic molar tube (OMT) surface, which may cause demineralization of the tooth surface. However, the stainless-steel OMT coated with ZnO nanoparticles may enhance antimicrobial efficacy and reduce biofilm accretion. The study aimed to identify the optimal parameter for coating orthodontic molar tubes with antimicrobial ZnO nanoparticles by the electrophoretic deposition (EPD)cell. 36 orthodontic molar tubes were included in this study. The coating process was carried out using an EPD cell. Various concentrations (7.5, 10, 20, 33) g/L of ZnO nanoparticles suspension were conducted in this study, in addition to multiple times and voltages. After the coating process, the samples were left to dry for 24 hours at room temperature. To confirm the coating and adhesion a qualitative tape test and the Scanning Electron microscope were used to study the morphological, topographical, and surface characteristics and the size of nanoparticles on the surface of the coated OMT. The innovative ZnO nanoparticles exhibit promising antibacterial properties against oral pathogens, leading to a decrease in plaque buildup, which may decrease tooth cavities and gingival irritation through orthodontic treatment. There was an increase in nanoparticle surface adhesion on the orthodontic molar tube surface at 2 mins deposition time while reduced surface adhesion as increased deposing time. The coating process was verified at a currency voltage of 30V, reducing nanoparticle agglomeration. A concentration of 10g/L of ZnO suspension shows the most stable and homogenous suspension.

ABSTRACT: Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is a significant pollutant found in food and feed, posing a threat to public health. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (LACP) against AFB1 in growing rabbits by investigating growth, serum metabolites, immunity, antioxidant capacity, and inflammatory response. A total of 60 growing male rabbits (721.5 ± 2.68g) were allocated to 4 experimental groups. The control group receiving only a basal diet, the AFB1 group (0.3 mg AFB1/kg diet), the LACP group (1 × 109 cfu/g /kg diet), and the combination group (1 × 109 cfu/g + 0.3 mg AFB1/kg diet; AFB1+ LACP) for 8 wk. The administration of AFB1 alone significantly decreased the final body weight, body gain, and feed intake, while significantly increasing the feed conversion ratio (P < 0.05). A significant decline in total proteins and globulins, along with elevated levels of hepatic enzymes (AST, ALP, ALT, and GGT) and renal function markers (creatinine and uric acid), were observed in the AFB1-contaminated group (P < 0.05). Immunoglobulins (IgG and IgM) were significantly decreased, alongside a significant elevation of triglycerides, direct bilirubin, and indirect bilirubin in growing rabbits fed diets with AFB1 (P < 0.05). Supplementing the AFB1 diet with LACP restored the growth reduction, improved liver (AST, ALP, ALT, and GGT) and kidney (creatinine and uric acid) functions, and enhanced immune markers in rabbit serum (P < 0.05). Antioxidant indices (SOD, GSH, and CAT) were significantly decreased in the AFB1 group (P < 0.05). However, the addition of LACP to the AFB1-contaminated diets improved antioxidant capacity and malondialdehyde (MDA) and protein carbonylation (PC) in hepatic tissues of rabbits (P < 0.05). Serum interlukin-4 (IL-4) and interferon gamma (IFN‐γ) levels were significantly increased in the AFB1 group (P < 0.05), but the addition of LACP significantly reversed this elevation. AFB1 downregulated the expression of immune-inflammatory genes such Nrf2, IL-10, and BCL-2 genes, while up-regulating the caspase-3 (CASP3) gene (P < 0.05). Supplementing AFB1 diet with LACP significantly decreased the expression of immune-inflammatory genes (Nrf2, IL-10, and BCL-2) and reduced the expression of the apoptotic-related gene CASP3. This study highlights the potential of L. plantarum (1 × 109 cfu/g /kg diet) as a protective agent against AFB1 in growing rabbits by enhancing antioxidant and immune function and reducing apoptosis and inflammation pathways.

ABSTRACT: This study explored the ability of formic acid (FA) to replace antibiotics in broiler chicken diets. It examined how FA affected the chickens' growth, carcass characteristics, blood chemistry, and gut bacteria. The experiment randomly assigned 300 one-day-old (Ross 308) broiler chicks to 5 groups, each divided into 6 replicates with 10 unsexed chicks. The following were the treatments: 1st group, negative control (NC): only received a basal diet; 2nd group, positive control (PC): received a basal diet supplemented with 0.5 grams of Colistin antibiotic per kilogram of diet; 3rd, 4th, and 5th groups (FA2, FA4, and FA6) these groups received a basal diet along with formic acid added at increasing levels: 2, 4, and 6 Cm3 per kilogram of diet, respectively. Results found no significant differences in live body weight (LBW) or body weight gain (BWG) between treatment groups, except for LBW at one week and BWG at 0 to 1 and 4 to 5 wk of age. No significant variations were found in feed intake (FI) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) among the treatment groups, excluding FI and FCR at 1 to 2 wk of age. The treatments significantly impacted carcass traits, dressing percentage, breast meat, thigh meat, spleen, giblets, blood levels of urea, creatinine, total protein, globulin, and albumin, as well as the activity of enzymes alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) in chicks fed different diets compared to control groups. The addition of FA to the diet significantly impacted antioxidant levels. Also, the FA2 group had the highest total bacterial count (TBC). However, the FA6 group was the opposite; it had the lowest levels of harmful bacteria, such as E. coli and Coliform. Supplementing broiler diets with formic acid improves blood parameters, antioxidant activity, and gut bacteria counts, with 4.0 cm³ formic acid/kg diet supplementation promoting optimal broiler health and product quality.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disorder characterized by challenges with social interactions and restricted/repetitive behaviors. Here, we recruited nine Qatari children of Arab ethnicity (males, aged 2–4 years), including six ASD subjects (n = 3 mild-to-moderate ASD and n = 3 severe ASD) and three control subjects. We generated induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) lines from PBMC samples of these subjects using non-integrating Sendai viral vectors. These iPSC lines were fully characterized and exhibited pluripotency characteristics, normal karyotypes, and trilineage differentiation potential. These iPSC lines provide valuable cell models for understanding ASD pathophysiology and developing new therapeutics for ASD.

Fossil fuels cause global warming and create greenhouse gases that cause irreparable environmental damage. On the other hand, because the combustion reactions are not completely done, dangerous compounds, such as nitrogen or carbon monoxide are produced which are very toxic and dangerous. As a result, innovative methods were implemented in combustion processes. One such method is to use a catalyst during the combustion process. This study used a molecular dynamics method to examine how the concentration of CuOCeO2 catalyst affected air-methane combustion in a helical microchannel. The results show that the maximum (Max) values of density (Dens), velocity (Velo), and temperature (Temp) in the excess oxygen (EO) state were 0.142 atoms per second, 0.35 Å/ps, and 1089 K, respectively, when the atomic ratio of CuOCeO2 increased from 1 % to 4 %. Subsequently, these values exhibited a declining trend. Also, the values of heat flux (HF), thermal conductivity, and combustion efficiency in 4 % catalyst reached the max values of 2038 W/m2, 1.15 W/m·K and 88 %. The results related to the max values of Dens, Velo, and Temp for the oxygen deficiency state had a similar trend and increased to the max values of 0.103 atom/Å3, 0.41 Å/ps, and 1024 K in 4 % catalyst, and then decreased by increasing the catalyst ratio of CuOCeO2 and reaching 10 %. The thermal behavior of nanostructure was more optimal in the deficient oxygen medium.

In this paper, two heated blocks and three flexible baffles that are alternately placed on the upper and bottom sides of a rectangular channel are used to replicate the transient heat and air movement. The novelty of this research is the use of flexible baffles to destruct the thermal boundary layer with maintaining little pressure drop, and thus reducing the required pumping capacity. The finite thickness blocks are subject to a constant heat flux, while the baffles are very thin and deforms depending on the strength of the flow of coolant (air). Finite element method with arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian approach is used for solving such deforming domain problem. The problem is inspected transiently by varying the dimensionless time (τ=0.0 to 10) and two salient parameters which are Reynolds number Re=10−500, and baffle elasticity parameter E=105−108. Results show that the flexibility feature of the baffles contributes not only in directing the coolant towards the hot blocks, but also contributes in reducing the skin friction and pressure drop through the channel. At Re=150, the skin friction and pressure drop of the flexible baffles are 13.2% and 16.5%, respectively lesser than the rigid baffles. The improvement of Nusselt number with flexibility parameter is marginal and within a limited low Reynolds number, where the maximal improvement is about 3.4% at Re=150.

Abstract Background Cancer patients with pelviabdominal masses can suffer from lower extremity symptoms due to venous compression. The effectiveness of venous stenting has been established in extrinsic venous compression in benign conditions like May-Thurner syndrome. In this retrospective study we evaluate the efficacy and safety of caval, iliocaval and iliofemoral venous stenting for cases of extrinsic venous compression caused by malignant masses in cancer patients. Methods IRB-approved retrospective review of patients who underwent iliofemoral venography with venoplasty and stenting between January 2018 and February 2022 was performed. Patients with extrinsic venous compression caused by malignant masses were included. Data on patient demographics, pre-procedure symptoms, procedural technique, stent characteristics, outcomes and follow-up were collected. Descriptive statistics were used to assess technical success, clinical success, primary stent patency and adverse events of the procedure. Results Thirty-seven patients (19 males, 18 females) who underwent 45 procedures were included. Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) was present in 21 (57%) patients. Twenty-nine patients (78%, 95% CI 62–90%) reported clinical improvement of the presenting symptoms. The median overall survival after the procedure was 4.7 months (95% CI 3.58–5.99). Eight (22%) patients were alive at last follow up with median follow up of 10.33 months (Range 2–25 months). Twenty-six patients had patent stents on their last follow up imaging (70%, 95% CI 61%-91%). Two patients had a small access site hematoma which resolved spontaneously. Two patients developed moderate, and 1 patient developed severe adverse events related to post procedure therapeutic anticoagulation. Conclusion Venous stenting is a safe procedure and should be considered as part of the palliative care for patients with debilitating lower extremity symptoms related to iliocaval and iliofemoral venous compression. Introduction Health warnings on cigarette sticks are emerging as a tool to control tobacco consumption; hence, understanding how they are perceived is valuable in determining their effectiveness. Our study aimed to evaluate the perception of health-related messages and warnings on individual cigarette sticks. It also aimed to evaluate the perceptions of the effectiveness of cigarette packaging warnings and the acceptance level for the inclusion of health warnings on cigarette sticks. Methods This cross-sectional survey was conducted on 285 individuals in Al- Madinah, Saudi Arabia. The survey was distributed online using a non-probability convenience sampling technique. The chi-squared test and logistic regression analysis were used to determine the association of sociodemographic characteristics and smoking-related variables with participants’ perceptions of health warnings on cigarette sticks and packaging. The responses were also assessed qualitatively using conceptual content analysis. Results In all, 18.6% of participants perceived that the package warnings were either ‘quite effective’ or ‘very effective’ in prompting smokers to quit. For health warnings on cigarette sticks, 28.1% of participants perceived that the theme of statistics on mortality was either ‘quite effective’ or ‘very effective’ in prompting smokers to quit, compared to 35.0 % for the theme of social and financial consequences. Respondents who had secondary education and lower were almost two times more likely to support the inclusion of health warnings than those who had a university education and higher (OR=1.9; 95% CI: 1.02–3.7, p=0.042). Most of the comments were positive for the inclusion of health warnings on cigarette sticks. Conclusions Most participants perceived that package warnings were ineffective, but warnings on cigarette sticks were effective methods of dissuasion of cigarette use. Smokers were almost twice as likely to perceive as effective supportive messages to quit than non-smokers. The majority of participants ‘agreed’ or ‘strongly agreed’ to the inclusion of health warnings on cigarette sticks.

Abstract Background Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common type of liver cancer, accounting for 90% of cases worldwide and a significant contributor to cancer-related deaths. This study comprehensively compares the safety and efficacy of laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) versus laparoscopic or percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (LRFA or PRFA) in patients with early and small HCC. Methods We systematically searched Cochrane Library, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases to include studies comparing LLR versus LRFA or PRFA in patients with early HCC meets the Milan criteria (defined as solitary nodule 0.01). Our subgroup analysis showed that LLR had higher 5-year survival than PRFA (RR = 1.15, 95% CI [1.02, 1.31], P = 0.03); however, there was no significant difference between LLR and LRFA (RR = 1.26, 95% CI [0.98, 1.63], P = 0.07). Efficient management of computational resources and data in the healthcare sector is increasingly challenging, particularly with the advent of advanced healthcare technologies. Effective task offloading mechanisms are crucial for enhancing system performance, patient care, and data security. This study aims to introduce and evaluate a novel framework for task offloading in healthcare environments. The framework seeks to address real-time healthcare demands through dynamic offloading strategies, incorporating digital twins (DT) and social health determinants to personalise and improve healthcare interventions. Employing both partial and binary offloading strategies, multi-protocol communications are supported by the framework, ensuring seamless data exchange. The integration of DT and social health determinants into offloading decisions stands at the core of the methodology, rigorously tested in real-time settings. Iterative testing confirms the framework’s effectiveness, demonstrating a 10% enhancement in energy efficiency and a 20% reduction in network latency with 20 MEC nodes. The inclusion of 30 MEC nodes further reduced latency by 33.4% and power usage by 53.8% for data sizes up to 100 MB, evidencing significant advancements in healthcare technology integration. A significant gap in existing literature is bridged, and a new trajectory for technological innovation in healthcare systems is set by the research. The study underscores the potential of sophisticated offloading techniques to revolutionise healthcare delivery, offering a holistic solution to the challenges of data and computational management in medical contexts.

This article proposes an integration between a graph framework for circuit representation and a Graph neural network (GNN) model suitable for different machine learning (ML) applications. Furthermore, the paper highlights design steps for tailoring and using the GNN-based ML model for converter performance predictions based on converter circuit level and internal parameter variations. Regardless of the number of components or connections present in a converter circuit, the proposed model can be readily scaled to incorporate different converter circuit topologies and may be used to analyze such circuits regardless of the number of components used or control parameters varied. To enable the use of ML methods and applications, all physical and switching circuit properties including operating mode, components and circuit behavior must be accurately mapped to graph representation. The model scalability to other circuit types and different connections and circuits elements is also tested, while being studied in the most common DC-AC inverter in grid connected systems including filter and filterless configurations. The filtered and filterless DC-AC inverter circuits are used to evaluate the model, scoring $R^{2}$ greater than 99% in most cases and a mean square error (MSE) tending to zero.

Background Cardiovascular comorbidities are frequent in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and are associated with a worse prognosis, and the presence of COPD has a negative impact on cardiovascular disease and heart failure The available estimates of the prevalence of diastolic dysfunction vary widely, probably due to different diagnostic approaches and small sample sizes. Aim Perspective analytical comparison of ECHO findings (done or will be done) within a 3-month interval of acute exacerbations. Outcomes Previous or prospective comparison of EF with current findings at the examination station or grade of diastolic dysfunction, Left atrial dimension, E/A, E/e′ ratios, and slope findings among the 3-month follow-up period perceptively (incidence) in the following two groups, namely Group A: the patient group with prior EHCO findings showing no heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) before enrollment but develop HFpEF during acute exacerbations. Group B: the patient group with ECHO findings of HFpEF following acute exacerbations within 3 months or thereafter. Patients and methods Patients with confirmed COPD by spirometry were evaluated by echocardiography initially as baseline and 3 months after for the assessment of diastolic dysfunction grades. Those patients are divided into two groups as inpatients and outpatients. Results An observational cross-sectional study including 36 COPD diagnosed patients: 33 males and 3 females with a mean age of (58.5 ± 7.7 years). The patients were divided into 17 inpatients and 19 outpatients. These patients were divided according to COPD severity into groups A, B, and C (outpatient group) and D (inpatient group) as 7, 9, 3, and 17 patients, respectively. Comparisons between baseline echocardiographic findings and after 3 months’ follow-up were processed. There were significant increases of tricuspid regurgitation (TR) and diastolic dysfunction in COPD group D compared with the other group at baseline and in the same group after a 3-month follow-up and significant correlation with COPD grade D cases and high-grade diastolic dysfunction. There were significant decrease of TR and decrease of diastolic dysfunction grades after a 3-month follow-up of acute exacerbations compared with baseline. It was found that spirometry parameters were nonstatistically different at baseline concerning the existing diverse diastolic dysfunction. However, only a significant negativecorrelation was found between baseline left atrial dimension and forced expiratory volume in first second/percentage of forced vital capacity. Conclusion COPD severity influences the HFpEF with tendency to increase diastolic dysfunction and TR, which could be improved with COPD management. Assessment of left ventricular diastolic dysfunction is pivotal.

Background: Globally, cervical cancer represents a major public health concern. The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine serves as a primary preventive strategy against cervical cancer. This study aimed to assess the HPV vaccine awareness and acceptability (HPVVAA) among women in Saudi Arabia. Methods: This study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining both qualitative and quantitative data to assess HPVVAA among women in Saudi Arabia. A national survey was conducted with a diverse sample of 640 Saudi women, aged 18 to 65, representing both urban and rural areas. Data collection involved structured questionnaires, including both closed-ended and open-ended questions, distributed online and via paper-based self-administration. Descriptive statistics summarized demographic characteristics, while inferential statistics and logistic regression were used to identify associations between variables. Thematic content analysis of the open-ended responses was conducted to explore recurring themes related to awareness, acceptability, and potential barriers. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Ethics approval and written informed consent were obtained prior to participants’ involvement in the study. Results: A total of 640 women participated in the study. The majority of participants were over 50 years old (31.2%), married (45.3%), and held a university or higher educational level (43.8%). Approximately 39.1% of participants had received the HPV vaccine, while 56.3% expressed willingness to accept it. Awareness of HPV and its link to cervical cancer was reported at 78.8% and 62.5%, respectively. The primary source of information (34.4%) was healthcare professionals. Positive attitudes toward vaccinations and favorable perceptions of the HPV vaccine’s safety and efficacy were prevalent among the respondents. Age (p < 0.01; odds ratio [OR]: 1.134; 95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 1.045–1.231) and marital status (p = 0.027; OR: 1.078; 95% CI: 1.007–1.153) were significant predictors of vaccine acceptance. Age was identified as a significant factor that influences awareness (p < 0.001; OR: 1.25; 95% CI: 1.10–1.42). Participants who were one year older were 1.25 times more likely to be aware of the HPV vaccine, with a 95% CI of 1.10 to 1.42 (p < 0.001). Participants with better healthcare access were more likely to be aware of the HPV vaccine (p < 0.001; OR: 1.30; 95% CI: 1.15–1.47). Conclusions: The study found a significant HPVVAA among women in Saudi Arabia. However, there is room for improvement in vaccine uptake, particularly in addressing barriers such as accessibility, affordability, and fear of side effects. Targeted communication strategies and public health initiatives are recommended to enhance HPVVAA and uptake, ultimately contributing to the global goal of cervical cancer prevention and control.

Eggs are a rich food source of proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. However, the egg industry faces some challenges such as microbial invasion due to environmental factors, leading to damage and reduced usability. Therefore, detecting the freshness of raw eggs using various technologies, including traditional and non-destructive methods, can overcome these challenges. As the traditional methods of assessing egg freshness are often subjective and time-consuming, modern non-destructive technologies, including near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, computer vision (color imaging), hyperspectral imaging, electronic noses, and nuclear magnetic resonance, have offered objective and rapid results to address these limitations. The current review summarizes and discusses the recent advances and developments in applying non-destructive technologies for detecting raw egg freshness. Some of these technologies such as NIR spectroscopy, computer vision, and hyperspectral imaging have achieved an accuracy of more than 96% in detecting egg freshness. Therefore, this review provides an overview of the current trends in the state-of-the-art non-destructive technologies recently utilized in detecting the freshness of raw eggs. This review can contribute significantly to the field of emerging technologies in this research track and pique the interests of both food scientists and industry professionals.

Metallic nanoparticles have found wide applications due to their unique physical and chemical properties. Green biosynthesis using plants, microbes, and plant/microbial extracts provides an environmentally friendly approach for nanoparticle synthesis. This review discusses the mechanisms and factors governing the biosynthesis of metallic nanoparticles such as silver, gold, and zinc using various plant extracts and microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and algae. The phytochemicals and biomolecules responsible for reducing metal ions and stabilizing nanoparticles are discussed. Key process parameters like pH, temperature, and precursor concentration affecting particle size are highlighted. Characterization techniques for confirming the formation and properties of nanoparticles are also mentioned. Applications of biosynthesized nanoparticles in areas such as antibacterial delivery, cancer therapy, biosensors, and environmental remediation are reviewed. Challenges in scaling up production and regulating nanoparticle properties are addressed. Power Point 365 was used for creating graphics. Overall, green biosynthesis is an emerging field with opportunities for developing eco-friendly nanomanufacturing platforms using abundant natural resources. Further work on optimizing conditions, standardizing protocols, and exploring new biosources is needed to realize the full potential of this approach.

Ethylene is an essential indicator of fruit ripening and climacteric or non-climacteric nature. This study investigated the postharvest behavior of five Chinese bayberry cultivars ‘Biqi’, ‘Dongkui’, ‘Fenhong’, ‘Xiazhihong’, and ‘Shuijing’. The fruits were harvested mature and stored at room temperature (25 °C) and under cold storage conditions (4 °C) to investigate the dynamics of ethylene production, firmness, anthocyanin content, and cell wall polysaccharide composition, as well as basic fruit physicochemical characteristics. The results show that Chinese bayberry is a climacteric fruit with ethylene production peaking shortly after harvest, especially at room temperature. Fruit color intensified over time due to anthocyanin accumulation, particularly in the flesh core. Darker cultivars produced more ethylene, which correlated with higher anthocyanin levels. At room temperature, ‘Biqi’ (black) had the highest ethylene production (4.03 µL·kg−1·h−1) and anthocyanin content (0.91 mg/g FW), while ‘Shuijing’, the white cultivar, had the lowest ethylene levels (1.9 µL·kg−1·h−1) and anthocyanin content (0.03 mg/g FW). Firmness significantly decreased at room temperature due to the degradation of hemicellulose and insoluble pectin, whereas cold storage mitigates this effect. After 3 days at room temperature, the average of firmness decreased by 23.7% in the five cultivars, compared to 12.7% under cold storage. Total soluble solids increase during storage, enhancing sweetness, especially at room temperature, with ‘Biqi’ increasing from 9.2 to 10.9% at 4 °C. Titratable acidity slightly decreased over time: the value for ‘Biqi’ decreased from 1.2% to 0.95% at room temperature and 1.1% at 4 °C. Citric, malic, and tartaric acid generally declined at room temperature but stabilized under cold storage. Sucrose, fructose, and glucose increased or remained stable, with significant varietal differences. Our results indicate that storing Chinese bayberry at 4 °C effectively preserves its quality and extends postharvest life. These findings underscore ethylene’s key role in regulating ripening, postharvest quality, and shelf life by influencing fruit color, firmness, and overall consumer appeal.

Background: Ruptured intracranial aneurysms may face configurational changes in size and shape resulting from extreme weakness in their wall. These configurational changes are associated with an amplified risk of rupture and surgical challenges as these aneurysms have proven to be unstable. However, to our knowledge, no previous studies have addressed the issue of configurational aneurysmal changes between the patient’s presentation (radiological images) and intraoperative findings. This paper aims to compare aneurysmal size and shape between pre-operative Computed tomography angiography and intraoperative lesion characteristics in a cohort of patients presented to our centre. Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on cases admitted to the Neurosurgery Teaching Hospital in Baghdad, Iraq, and underwent microsurgical clipping of ruptured aneurysms. Their records were checked for aneurysmal configurational changes by comparing pre-operative radiological images and intra-operative findings. Results: Of the 275 patients, 5 cases were enrolled with aneurysmal configurational changes. Three of them were females, and two were males. The pre-operative aneurysmal shapes based on Computed tomography angiography were (3 unicyst and two conical shapes) and the range of aneurysmal size was (7-11 mm) with a mean of 9 mm. Compared to intra-operative findings, there were total aneurysmal shape changes (connected cyst in 4 patients and spherical aneurysm in one patient). The range of aneurysmal size was (7-11 mm) with a mean of 9 mm. Conclusion: Intracranial aneurysms may undergo configurational changes through the time between pre-op imaging and surgery; early detection of these changes may ensure optimal management of such cases.

In contemporary design practices, the conflict between initial design approaches and subsequent manufacturing and construction stages presents a notable challenge. To address this disparity, our study aims to establish a comprehensive digital design workflow, bridging these gaps. The authors introduce a conceptual framework that seamlessly integrates the imperatives of LEED with the realm of robotic manufacturing, specifically tailored for construction sites. The proposed methodology encompasses four distinct iFOBOT modules: iFOBOT-environment, iFOBOT-design, iFOBOT-construct, and iFOBOT-monitor. The integration of these modules allows for a holistic approach to design and construction, fostering efficient collaboration between multidisciplinary teams. To validate the efficacy of the author’s approach, we conducted an empirical study involving the creation of a double-skin facade panel perforation using this integrated process. Initial findings emphasize the enhanced constructability achieved through simulated robotic interventions utilizing a heuristic function. Moreover, this research presents a functional prototype as a tangible embodiment of the method’s practical application and potential impact on the field of architectural design and construction.

Background: Residual mitral regurgitation (MR) is frequent after transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER). There is controversy regarding the clinical impact of residual MR and its quantitative assessment by transthoracic echocardiography (TTE), which is often challenging with multiple eccentric jets and artifact from the clip. The utility of the velocity time integral (VTI) ratio between the mitral valve (MV) and left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT), (VTIMV/LVOT), a simple Doppler measurement that increases with MR, has not been assessed post TEER.
