The replacement of urea with polymer-coated urea (PCU) fertilizer and the application of organic fertilizers (OFs) are effective strategies for reducing N loss in farmland and preventing soil degradation. However, limited research has been conducted on the synergistic effects of OF combined with inorganic N fertilizer, particularly PCU, on rice yield, quality, and profit. To address this issue, a two-year field experiment was conducted involving five fertilization treatments: no nitrogen fertilizer (0N), urea applied at the full local rate of 270 kg N ha−1 (CK), PCU at a reduced rate of 240 kg N ha−1 (T1), a combination of 70% PCU and 30% urea at 240 kg N ha−1 (T2), and T2 supplemented with 4500 kg ha−1 of OF (T3). The results showed that, compared with CK, the T1 treatment improved the appearance quality and taste value but slightly reduced the other quality indices. In contrast, the T2 and T3 treatments enhanced the grain yield, especially for T3, with an advantage in the tiller number, shoot dry weight, and leaf area index, which promoted the panicle number, filled grain, and grain weight, thereby significantly increasing the yield. The T2 improved the processing, appearance, and taste qualities by reducing the protein content, increasing the amylose content and gel consistency, and optimizing the starch viscosity characteristics (increasing the peak viscosity and breakdown while reducing the setback and consistency), with the addition of OF (T3) further expanding the benefits. Furthermore, the nutritional quality was also enhanced by optimizing the protein components and increasing the protein yield. Although the agricultural inputs in the T2 and T3 treatments were higher, the profit from the increased grain yield could cover these inputs, thereby maintaining profit with T3 or increasing profit with T2. The prices of agricultural inputs shape the operational costs of farms and significantly affect their income situation. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the functioning of food systems all over the world, including in Poland. The agricultural sector in Poland faced several challenges, including the surge in prices of means of production in agriculture. Purpose of the article: The study aims to identify and assess changes in the prices of means of production in agriculture and the impact of changes in these prices on the dynamics of selling prices of agricultural products and the income situation of farms in Poland during the COVID-19 pandemic. Research methods: The study employs various research methods, including critical literature analysis, the descriptive approach, the comparative method, verbal logic, and descriptive statistical methods. Moreover, we utilize a standardised questionnaire method utilising the CATI (computer-assisted telephone interviewing) technique, targeting 50 experts in the field of agricultural economics, to gather their perspectives on the possibility of transferring the rise in agricultural production costs to the pricing of products sold during the COVID-19 pandemic. The secondary data come from the Statistics Poland, the Agency for Restructuring and Modernization of Agriculture (ARMA), and the National Bank of Poland (NBP). The research period covers the years 2017–2021, with particular emphasis on the years 2020–2021, i.e., the period of the COVID-19 pandemic. Main findings: Research results show that only in 2020, the prices of goods purchased for current agricultural production decreased. However, in 2021, the costs of materials and services and other costs in agriculture, including wages, increased at a record pace. The demand-side causes of such cost increases were increases in money supply and agricultural income. Supply-side causes were shaped by commodity prices and wages. In Poland, the prices of goods and services purchased by farms were less variable than the prices of goods sold. The data analysis did not reveal significant relationships regarding the dynamics of the prices discussed. Such a conclusion is also confirmed by the results of a questionnaire survey directed to experts in agricultural economics. The responses concerning the possibility of transferring the increase in production costs to the prices of sold products during the pandemic years varied. In the years 2017–2021, the income situation of Polish farms was variable. In 2020, increases in income from production factors, operating surplus, and farmer’s income, and their decreases in 2021, were inversely correlated with changes in production costs in agriculture.

Agricultural management practices that reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have been identified as effective mitigation strategies. However, research on carbon emissions from major crops in Northeast China focuses on national and provincial data, overlooking city-scale variability and uncertainties, which prevents fine-scale assessment of crop emissions reduction potential. To address this, a life cycle assessment (LCA) combined with the Monte Carlo method was conducted to estimate the carbon footprint of rice, maize, and soybean production for different cities in Northeast China from 1991 to 2020. The results showed that the top one-third of cities with the highest total carbon emissions (TCE) account for approximately 40 % of the region's TCE. Nitrogen losses and production processes related to nitrogen fertilizer application were identified as the primary contributors to TCE from crop production, accounting for 29.6–62.5 % of the total, with a relative importance of 58.5–78.2 %. Scenario analysis indicated that optimizing nitrogen fertilizer management and reducing active nitrogen losses are the most effective strategies for reducing TCE from major crop production, offering a reduction potential of 34.5–60.6 %. Recommended strategies include phased application of nitrogen fertilizer, the addition of nitrification inhibitors, or using slow-release nitrogen fertilizers, combined with appropriate increases in crop planting density, straw return decomposition technologies and water-saving irrigation methods to reduce GHG emissions. These strategies aim to achieve low-carbon sustainable grain production and provide a foundation for exploring the emissions reduction potential of agricultural inputs and optimizing regional crop layouts, offering new insights for developing more effective GHG reduction strategies. This study introduces a non-parametric approach to estimate the marginal products of agricultural inputs (agricultural land, labor, machinery, fertilizers and pesticides) in Jiangsu province, China. To study the effects of climate change on these marginal products, we used a fixed-effects regression model. The results show an upward trend of inefficiency in Jiangsu's agricultural production from 2001 to 2018. The marginal products of agricultural land, labor, machinery, chemical fertilizers and pesticides are 1.54 thousand USD per hectare, 0.32 thousand USD per person, 0.31 thousand USD per kWh, 21.63 thousand USD per ton and 0.88 USD per ton, respectively. Climate change refers mainly to temperature and precipitation, and we analyzed their effects on the marginal products. Temperature has a statistically significant positive effect on the marginal product of fertilizers and machinery, whereas precipitation harms the marginal product of land. Two inputs (i.e., land and fertilizer) are critical driving forces in agricultural production. The fact that the agricultural structure in Turkey consists of small fragmented and scattered lands, animal and plant production practices that are not managed with a modern management approach, require agricultural cooperatives to be a balance element in agriculture. Moreover, agriculture is not a sector that can be left unattended and it is not a market that can be expected to take shape on its own in a free market economy. Therefore, it is imperative that agriculture is credited, guided by projects, and managed with the logic of economic business. However, it is seen that this importance is not understood sufficiently, that there are problems in implementation and that determined policies are not put forward to eliminate it. During the research, the contributions of the agricultural credit cooperatives in Tekirdağ Province to their partners were presented and solutions were discussed. In the study, 13.747 out of 18.190 partners were active partners in 43 units of cooperatives in Tekirdağ Regional Union and sample was determined as 121 partners. The questionnaire was carried out through face to face interviews. The impact assessment of the multi-purpose activities of the Agricultural Credit Cooperatives in the province of Tekirdağ on the target audience partners has been interpreted with various graphical and statistical analysis methods. The partners do not find the loan interest rates of the Agricultural Credit Cooperatives low enough. This result means that the solution suggestions such as the Agricultural Credit Cooperatives' reducing the resource cost by creating Cooperatives Bank or mutual fund resources should be evaluated. The multi-purpose activities of the agricultural credit cooperatives were evaluated in line with the opinions of the partners, and the effects of multipurpose policies on the cooperative partners were analyzed by correlation analysis. There is a strong positive correlation between multi-purpose policies and faciliating the work of farmers (Correlation coefficient: 0.298). A very good positive correlation was observed between participating in projects and faciliating the work of farmers (Correlation coefficient: 0.408). In the study, it is revealed that the Agricultural Credit Cooperatives carry out many agricultural activities together,which is positively received by the partners. The partners of the Agricultural Credit Cooperatives see these cooperatives as an important tool in running their business and a good alternative source of finance. Cotton is a strategic crop with a critical role in the economy and agriculture. The increasing price of crop inputs is the main challenge for the developing countries, including Iran, so that it is crucial for the economy of the states to recognize the underpinning factors. Accordingly, the present study aimed to identify the relationship between price shocks of cotton production inputs and cotton price in 12 provinces of Iran over the 2000-2016 time period using panel-data vector auto regression (PVAR) model. The results to estimate the model and to check the interrelationships of the research variables in the context of the impulse response functions and analysis of variance showed that the variables of seed price, labor price, and pesticide price have a significant positive relationship with cotton price with the numerical values of 0.296, 0.002 and 0.017, respectively. The relationship of the variables of land and fertilizer prices was found to be negative but non-significant with the numerical values of 8.23 and 0.118, respectively. According to the results, to avoid the price volatility and shocks in input and output markets, it is recommended to organize and regulate the demand and supply system of the inputs and output.

The Growth Enhancement Support Scheme (GESS) was initiated by the Nigerian government to boost agricultural production through the provision of ‘smart subsidies’ on some farm inputs to small‑scale farmers. This review highlights the successes and challenges of the Scheme’s implementation process across the country. The study reviewed scholarly articles and other secondary data from government sources on the scheme. Findings from the study revealed that the Scheme was able to deliver subsidised agricultural inputs to small-scale farmers with relative ease and at affordable rate which was able to boost farm output. However, the scheme is affected majorly by its politicization, the inability of the governments to release funds to agro-dealers leading to late delivery of inputs and the lack of support service (extension) to farmers. Based on these findings, it is therefore recommended that, adequate synergy should be established between all collaborating agencies of the government participating in the scheme to ensure adequate release of funds, timely disbursement of farm inputs and the provision of suitable support services to farmers.

Mapping and monitoring agricultural land-use intensity (LUI) changes are essential for understanding their effects on biodiversity. Current land-use models provide a rather coarse spatial resolution, while in-situ measurements of LUI cover only a limited extent and are time-consuming and expensive. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of using habitat type, topo-climatic, economic output, and remote-sensing data to map LUI at a high spatial resolution. To accomplish this, we first rated the habitat types across the agricultural landscape in terms of the amount and frequency of fertiliser input, pesticide input, ploughing, grazing, mowing, harvesting, and biomass output. We consolidated these ratings into one LUI index per habitat type that we then related to topo-climatic, economic output, and remote-sensing predictors. The results showed that the LUI index was strongly related to plant indicator values for mowing tolerance and soil nutrient content and to aerial nitrogen deposition, and thus, is an adequate index. Topo-climatic, and, to a smaller extent, economic output and remote-sensing predictors, proved suitable for mapping LUI. Large- to medium-scale patterns are explained by topo-climatic predictors, while economic output predictors explain medium-scale patterns and remote-sensing predictors explain local-scale patterns. With the fine-scale LUI map produced from this study, it is now possible to estimate within unvarying land-use classes, the effect on agrobiodiversity of an increase in LUI on fertile and accessible lands and of a decrease of LUI by the abandonment of marginal agricultural lands, and thus, provide a valuable base for understanding the effects of LUI on biodiversity. Due to the worldwide availability of remote-sensing and climate data, our methodology can be easily applied to other countries where habitat-type data are available. Given their low explanatory power, economic output variables may be omitted if not available.

The article discusses the role of managed pollinators in the pollination ecosystem service in South Africa. Topics discussed include a comparison between wild pollinators and managed pollinators which are represented by Apis mellifera or the European honeybee, the tendency to consider managed pollinators as an agricultural input, and a framework for illustrating the pollination of insect-dependent crops.

The present study aim to explore temporal–spatial patterns of water use (WU) efficiency and its influencing factors of maize production in China during 1998–2010. WU and productivity (WP) were quantified by taking irrigation loss into account and the links between WP and nine selected indicators were revealed by the partial least squares regression (PLSR) model. Results showed that national WU and WP in maize production were 138.56 cubic gigametres (Gm3; 0.755 green and 0.245 blue) and 1.079 kg/m3, respectively. WP was enhanced in the present study due to an increase in irrigated crop yield. Provinces located in the middle–lower part of the Yellow River had high proportions of green water and WP , while high proportions of irrigation water and low WP were found in Northwest China. The dosage of pesticides per unit area, relative humidity, average temperature and precipitation were the dominant factors that affected WP. However, the relationships between WP and solar radiation, fertilizer, agricultural machinery power, irrigation proportion and irrigated efficiency were not significant. Potato, the most important vegetable crop in South Africa, is produced in many distinct geographical regions differing in climate, soils, production seasons and management practices and access to markets. These differences affect the amount of input resources required to produce potatoes as well as yields and crop value, and therefore the use efficiencies of land, water, nutrients, seed and energy. Resource use efficiencies affect the ecological and financial sustainability of potato production in this region, which has in general less favourable potato growing conditions than north-western Europe and the U.S.A., where high resource use efficiencies are usually recorded. This study aimed to assess and benchmark South African potato production regions, representing a wide range of growing conditions, regarding their use of input resources and to identify resource-intensive practices, which may suggest inefficient use of inputs. Surveys were conducted in 2013 and 2014 by interviewing growers in all production regions, to provide data on resource use efficiencies. Quantitative modelling approaches were applied to calculate carbon footprints as a proxy of energy use efficiency, potential crop yields and irrigation needs for each region. Variability in the gap between potential and actual yield was used to identify yield limiting factors. Actual yields achieved were on average 60% of the potential yield, suggesting fairly efficient use of available production factors. Water, seed and nutrient use efficiencies differed widely between and within regions and were not directly proportional to water requirements and yields achieved. Fertilizers (34%) and irrigation (30%) were the greatest contributors to energy use in potato crop production. Energy required to pump water was strongly related to the amount of irrigation applied, pumping depth and distance. Long distance travel of produce to retail points contributed substantially to energy use. Significant improvements in efficiencies are possible by improving management practices. Analysis of the variability in resource use efficiencies between farms and regions provided production sustainability indicators that can assist growers in identifying inefficient practices and yield limiting factors. These can be addressed through the use of decision support systems, such as irrigation scheduling tools, to improve resource use efficiencies and the sustainability of production, not only for the production efficiency of the specific study area, but also for the economic efficiency of potato production anywhere else. In most of the Albanian regions, the relationships among suppliers, farmers, and intermediaries are not based on formal contracts. Usually input suppliers and intermediaries act in their own interest only, without considering the long-term business relationship aspect with the farmers. In this context displayed the need of an instrument that could integrate the farmers vertically in the value chain as contract is. As a result, the main purpose of this paper is to deal with the problem of agricultural inputs at the farm level, in the context of the profitability of the use of these inputs and making evident some potential advantages and disadvantages of contract farming. In order to reach this purpose, this study is based on primary and secondary data collected through focus groups and in-depth interviews with farmers and input suppliers in the rural area of Grabjan in Lushnjë. This paper suggests that farmers of Grabjan area should integrate vertically by establishing contracts especially with intermediaries, who can provide for them also inputs. Farmers' participation in contracts provides them with several advantages such as reduced risks, financing opportunities, access to market information, increase revenues. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using typical counties in the Yimeng Mountain area of northern China as an example, this paper analyzed the household and agricultural input characteristics of different types of peasant households using survey data from 262 farm households. The target minimization of the total absolute deviations (MOTAD) model was applied to determine the optimal combinations in the allocation of agricultural input factors and production for different types of at-risk peasant households to obtain the ideal agricultural income. The relevant results are twofold. (1) The agricultural input behaviors of different types of peasant households vary significantly. The highest levels of agricultural land, labor, and yield-increasing and labor-saving inputs included I part-time peasant households ( I PTPH ), followed by full-time peasant households ( FTPH ), while the input levels of II part-time peasant households ( II PTPH ) and non-agricultural peasant households ( NAPH ) with higher levels of non-agricultural employment gradually decreased. In general, an increase in peasant households' part-time employment revealed an inverted U-shaped trend in the agricultural input level, with a trajectory of I PTPH > FTPH > II PTPH > NAPH . (2) The current agricultural inputs and production combinations of different types of peasant households have room for improvement. It is necessary to adjust agricultural inputs and optimize production combinations to obtain target incomes. Overall, all types of peasant households must streamline labor inputs and increase capital inputs, except for I PTPH , for which capital inputs should be reduced. Following optimization, economic crops gradually replace grain crops, and the optimal agricultural incomes of peasant households will be improved. The study results provide practical policy insights for reducing agricultural production risks and improving agricultural production incomes.

Abstract: The aims of this study are determining the energy use, qualitative analyzing of energy flow and also investigating energy efficiency by Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) in corn production of Iran during a seven years period. Results indicated that the average of total energy input increased from 40.98 GJ ha−1 in 2001 to 63.64 GJ ha−1 in the year of 2007. Similarly, the average of total output energy rose from 89.03 to 107.54 GJ ha−1 in the same years, respectively. Also the results showed that average energy use efficiency, energy productivity, specific energy and net energy gain in the studied period was 2.59, 0.17 kg MJ−1, 7.24 MJ kg−1 and 51.34 GJ ha−1, respectively. DEA considered the yield (kg ha−1) as output and three major energy inputs; fertilizers, diesel fuel and machinery as input of 10 provinces in each year. Findings revealed that average energy efficiency score was 90.26%. There is impermanent trend in growth of energy efficiency in corn production of Iran, which needed to further analysis in future studies to realize relevant fluctuations in corn farming. The agriculture sector, which accounts for about 52% of the total workforce despite a steady decline of its share in the gross domestic product (GDP), is still the largest economic sector that plays a significant role in the overall socio-economic development of India. Sustainability of agricultural production systems depends on their carbon (C) footprint and the C output-input ratio. Thus, the present study was conducted with the objectives to: (i) assess C emissions in relation to predominant agricultural systems in India; (ii) evaluate C-use efficiency of production systems; and (iii) determine the relative sustainability of agronomic production systems as determined by their C footprints. The data collated on C-based input into the soil for predominant agricultural and horticultural crops included the amounts of fertilizers (N, P, K), herbicides, and pesticides used for crops annually, cropland area, total production of each crop, water-management practices, energy used for different operations, and total number of livestock. These data were used to compute C equivalent (Ce) per hectare of input and output, and the relative sustainability indices as a measure of the C-production efficiency. Beginning with low C-based input of 69.7 Tg Ce/yr (1 Tg = teragram = 1012g = 1 million ton) in 1960-61, input of fertilizers, pesticides, farm power, feed, fodder, and electricity increased to 281.2 Tg Ce/yr by 2008-09. The output in agriculture increased from 578.6 Tg Ce/yr in 1960-61 to 1239.1 Tg Ce/yr in 2008-09. The C-sustainability index was high in 1960, and was indicative of the minimum usage of inputs prior to the onset of the Green Revolution. Thereafter, the C-sustainability index decreased during 1970s and 1980s because of increased C-based inputs. There existed a linear relationship between C input and C output, indicating that an increase of 1 Tg Ce/yr of C input resulted in a corresponding increase in C output of ∼21 Tg Ce/yr. Sustainability of agricultural systems depends on their carbon (C) footprint, and the Coutput:Cinput ratio. Thus, this study was conducted with the objectives to: (i) assess the agricultural C emissions in relation to predominant farming systems in Punjab, India, and Ohio, USA; (ii) evaluate C-use efficiency of production systems; and (iii) determine the relative sustainability of agronomic production systems as determined by their C footprints. The data collated on C-based input into the soil for predominant crops for both regions included the amounts of fertilizers (N, P, K), herbicides and pesticides used for each crop annually, tillage methods, cropland area, total production of each crop, area under different farming systems, water-management practices (e.g., tubewell irrigation), and total number of livestock. These data were used to compute C equivalent (CE) per hectare of input and output, and the relative sustainability indices as a measure of the C-production efficiency. There existed a linear relationship observed between C input and C output for Punjab, indicating that an increase of 1 Tg/yr (1 Tg = teragram = 1012 g = million ton) of C input resulted in the corresponding C output of ∼12 Tg/yr. A similar linear relationship between input and net C output between the 1930s and 1980s was observed for Ohio, and the ratio reached a plateau during 1990s. The average C-sustainability index (increase in C output as % of C-based input) value for Ohio from 1990 to 2005 was 35-43, almost 2.5 times that of Punjab. Since 1989, there has been a major shift in Ohio from conventional tillage to reduced and conservation tillage along with a decline in fertilizer use. No-till farming is practiced on about 35% of the cultivated area, which involves elimination of plowing, retention of crop residue mulch, and judicious use of chemicals. In Punjab, crop residues are removed, resulting in loss of C from the soil organic carbon pool. Hence, the C-based sustainability index is much higher in Ohio than in Punjab. Numerous studies have reported effects of straws with microbial decaying agents on greenhouse gas emissions from rice fields. However, studies regarding the effects of microbial decaying agents on carbon footprint and economic profit under diverse water regimes remained unclear. A two-factor field experiment was adopted to assess effects of different straw treatments (straw returning alone abbreviated as S, and straw returning with microbial decaying agent abbreviated as SMD) on CH 4 and N 2 O emissions, rice yield, carbon footprint, economic profit and net ecosystem economic profit (NEEP) from paddy field under different water regimes (continuous flooding abbreviated as F, and alternation of wetting and drying abbreviated as AWD) in central China. Compared with S treatment, SMD treatment significantly enhanced the crop water productivity by 7.9%−8.4% and the rice yield by 7.3%−7.7%. Though SMD treatment increased the economic profit by 9.9%−18.5%, and the NEEP by 9.6%−18.0% relative to S treatment, it also resulted in higher the CH 4 emissions by 12.7%−32.4% and global warming potential by 11.2%−21.5% regardless of water regimes. Water regimes had significant effects on the crop water productivity, rice yield, CH 4 and N 2 O emissions, global warming potential, economic profit, NEEP and carbon footprint. Compared with F treatment, AWD treatment improved the crop water productivity by 51.7%−79.4%, maintained rice yield, increased N 2 O emissions by 17.7%−40.0%, and mitigated CH 4 emissions by 33.2%−75.1%, which therefore resulted in lower global warming potential by 31.5%−69.8% and carbon footprint by 32.7%−66.0%. Moreover, AWD treatment significantly increased the economic profit by 25.4%−41.9% and the NEEP by 28.8%−46.6% relative to F treatment. Overall, the straw incorporated with microbial decaying agents is not an environmental friendly practice for the tradeoff of mitigation of CH 4 emissions and increase in economic profit. The broiler production chain (BPC) has associated environmental impacts, costs, and effects that are not compensated by the Brazilian socioeconomy. The objective of this review was to discuss BPC waste composting from a circular economy perspective. Organic solid waste is a negative externality and the agroindustry must contribute to its internalization, especially in countries with significant production, consumption, and export of chicken meat. The BPC has four main stages of significant organic waste production: reproductive poultry, hatchery, broiler growth, and broiler industry. The principal residues of this industry are reproductive poultry litter, hatchery waste, feed waste, carcasses, truck cleaning solid fraction, flotation sludge, sausage casings, charcoal, and ash. These residues have varying characteristics, such as total organic carbon (TOC) from ranging 4.4–56.22% and nitrogen from 0.2 to 9.33%. It is evident that raw materials, nutrients, and energy are misused throughout the BPC; developing countries especially cannot sustain the loss of these valuable resources. Composting has emerged as a method for mitigating the impacts of BPC waste, however, there are some obstacles. The high nitrogen concentration in BPC residues make balancing the C/N ratio complex. This deficit carbon demands residues from other sectors, such as from tree pruning, cotton residues, raw glycerin, and Napier grass. The produced BPC compost has favorable attributes to be reincorporated into the supply chain as an agricultural input. However, little research has been conducted on the short, medium, and long-term impacts of BPC compost application on different crop and soil types. Cultivations close to BPC facilities which grow broiler feed components (e.g., corn) are attractive for a closed cycle strategy and for approaching the principles of the circular economy. Within a context of beef feedlots and feed-crop production systems, we surveyed farmers to identify their perceived monetary value for the manure they used or could have used. Value is contextual with respect to a number of socio-economic, environmental, regulatory, and physical factors, which influence farmer's inclinations about how they manage manure. The most desirable manure management strategies are likely practiced by those who perceive its value highest, and, conversely, the least desirable manure management strategies are likely practiced by those who assign the lowest value to it. This study considered factors that affect or relate to farmer perceptions of manure's value. Using quantile regression, we observed variations in how farmers perceived the value of manure, considering farm and farmer characteristics, farming practices, select preferences, and whether or not they used manure on their own cropland. For example, we found that livestock producers who grow feed for their own cattle value manure differently compared to crop producers who do not manage cattle, most likely due to perceived need. Added years of experience in farming lowered the farmer's perception of manure's value. Currently, the effects of different tillage modes on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, carbon footprint (CF), energy budget and net ecosystem economic efficiency (NEEE) in rice fields remain unclear. In the present study, three tillage modes were tested, including rice conventional cultivation with intensive till (CT), conventional flat cultivation with no-till (FNT) and ridge cultivation with no-till (RNT) in Dafasi town, Wuxue city, Hubei province, China. This study for the first time evaluates the effects of RNT on agricultural GHG emissions, grain yield, CF, energy budget and NEEE. Compared with CT and FNT, RNT reduced the soil CH 4 emissions by 29.5% and 9.9%, respectively. CT resulted in 15.8% and 23.1% lower total GHG emissions than FNT and RNT, respectively, due to lower soil CH 4 emissions. Moreover, RNT significant decreased the CF by 35.7% and 18.2% relative to CT and FNT, respectively. The net energy, energy efficiency and energy productivity under RNT were 41.2%, 25.0% and 26.7% higher than those under CT, respectively, while the specific energy under RNT was 24.7% lower than that under CT. The NEEE under RNT was 1.66 and 1.20 folds of that under CT and FNT, respectively. In conclusion, this study recommends that RNT is an environmentally safe tillage mode for reducing GHG emissions and CF, and improving energy use efficiency and NEEE for rice production in China and similar agro-eco-regions elsewhere in the world. Unreasonable application of nitrogen (N) fertilizers gives rise to agricultural greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, causing increases in carbon footprint (CF). To solve such problems, scholars have proposed the practice of N deep placement (DPN), which has been proven to be an effective approach to enhance N use efficiency and reduce N loss. However, the effect of DPN on CF and net ecosystem economic benefit (NEEB) from no-tillage (NT) rice fields remains largely unknown. In this work, a field experiment was conducted with a random complete block design to investigate the differences in soil CH 4 and N 2 O emissions, agricultural GHG emissions, grain yield, CF, and NEEB from NT paddy fields between urea deep placement (UDP) and urea broadcasting (UBC) in central China. The CF for the entire rice production chain can be calculated as the ratio of total GHG emissions to grain yield using a life-cycle approach. The novelty of this study lies in the examination of the integrated effects of DPN on GHG emissions, grain yield, CF and NEEB from NT paddy fields. The agricultural GHG emissions varied from 1297.0 to 1420.8 kg CO 2 -eq ha−1. Chemical fertilizers dominated the GHG emissions. UDP resulted in 96.8 kg CO 2 -eq ha−1 more emissions than UBC due to more consumption of diesel by machinery operations. Compared with UBC, UDP significantly reduced soil CH 4 emissions by 36–39% and N 2 O emissions by 29–31%. The mitigation of soil CH 4 and N 2 O emissions under UDP decreased the total GHG emissions by 34% and CF by 46%. Soil CH 4 emissions accounted for 83–88% of the total GHG emissions. The NEEB under UDP was 48% higher than that under UBC. In conclusion, DPN can increase grain yield, reduce CF, and enhance NEEB from NT rice fields, and may be an economic and cleaner approach for rice production. Mapping and monitoring agricultural land-use intensity (LUI) changes are essential for understanding their effects on biodiversity. Current land-use models provide a rather coarse spatial resolution, while in-situ measurements of LUI cover only a limited extent and are time-consuming and expensive. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of using habitat type, topo-climatic, economic output, and remote-sensing data to map LUI at a high spatial resolution. To accomplish this, we first rated the habitat types across the agricultural landscape in terms of the amount and frequency of fertiliser input, pesticide input, ploughing, grazing, mowing, harvesting, and biomass output. We consolidated these ratings into one LUI index per habitat type that we then related to topo-climatic, economic output, and remote-sensing predictors. The results showed that the LUI index was strongly related to plant indicator values for mowing tolerance and soil nutrient content and to aerial nitrogen deposition, and thus, is an adequate index. Topo-climatic, and, to a smaller extent, economic output and remote-sensing predictors, proved suitable for mapping LUI. Large- to medium-scale patterns are explained by topo-climatic predictors, while economic output predictors explain medium-scale patterns and remote-sensing predictors explain local-scale patterns. With the fine-scale LUI map produced from this study, it is now possible to estimate within unvarying land-use classes, the effect on agrobiodiversity of an increase in LUI on fertile and accessible lands and of a decrease of LUI by the abandonment of marginal agricultural lands, and thus, provide a valuable base for understanding the effects of LUI on biodiversity. Due to the worldwide availability of remote-sensing and climate data, our methodology can be easily applied to other countries where habitat-type data are available.
