This report summarizes the presentations and recommendations of the eleventh annual American Geriatrics Society and National Institute on Aging research conference, "Osteoporosis and Soft Tissue (Muscle/Fat) Disorders," on March 11‐12, 2019, in Bethesda, Maryland. Falls, fractures, and sarcopenia have a major impact on health in older adults, and they are interconnected by known risk factors. The link between osteoporosis, which is common in older adults, and the risk of falls is well known. Sarcopenia, the age‐related decline in skeletal muscle mass and function, is also associated with an increased risk of falls and fractures because it reduces strength and leads to functional limitations. In addition to increasing the risk of falls, sarcopenia and osteoporosis can lead to frailty, reduced quality of life, morbidity, and mortality. The conference highlighted the impact of bone and soft tissue disorders on quality of life, morbidity, and mortality in older adults. Presenters described factors that contribute to these disorders; health disparities experienced by various subpopulations; and promising biological, pharmacologic, and behavioral interventions to prevent or treat these disorders. The workshop identified many research gaps and questions along with research recommendations that have the potential to enhance the prospect of healthy aging and improved quality of life for older adults. Frailty has long been an important concept in the practice of geriatric medicine and in gerontological research, but integration and implementation of frailty concepts into clinical practice in the United States has been slow. The National Institute on Aging (NIA) Intramural Research Program and the Johns Hopkins Older Americans Independence Center sponsored a symposium to identify potential barriers that impede the movement of frailty into clinical practice and to highlight opportunities to facilitate the further integration of frailty into clinical practice. Primary and subspecialty care providers, and investigators working to integrate and translate new biological aging knowledge into more specific preventive and treatment strategies for frailty provided the meeting content. Recommendations included a call for more specific language that clarifies conceptual differences between frailty definitions and measurement tools; the development of randomized controlled trials to test whether specific intervention strategies for a variety of conditions differently affect frail and non‐frail individuals; development of implementation studies and therapeutic trials aimed at tailoring care as a function of pragmatic frailty markers; the use of deep learning and dynamic systems approaches to improve the translatability of findings from epidemiological studies; and the incorporation of advances in aging biology, especially focused on mitochondria, stem cells, and senescent cells, toward the further development of biologically targeted intervention and prevention strategies that can be used to treat or prevent frailty. The American Geriatrics Society convened a conference in Bethesda, Maryland, to explore models and studies of aging. This was the second of three conferences, supported by a U13 grant from the National Institute on Aging, to aid recipients of Grants for Early Medical/Surgical Specialists Transition to Aging Research (GEMSSTAR) in integrating geriatrics into their specialties. Recognizing that aging is the largest risk factor for multiple chronic diseases and age‐related loss of resilience, the conference organizers focused scientific sessions on how targeting age‐related mechanisms can delay, prevent, or reverse geriatric syndromes, age‐related chronic diseases, and loss of resilience. The rationale for studying models of aging as well as study designs, strategies, and challenges of studying human aging were reviewed. The Merz Institute of Advanced Aesthetics Expert Summit was held in Prague, Czech Republic, from 19-20 November 2016. The meeting had a distinct advisory board character and invited aesthetic practitioners from all over the world to hear an international faculty present a range of keynote lectures and conduct live injection sessions with an emphasis on recent developments in combination aesthetic interventions for face and body rejuvenation and beautification. Aging is associated with changes in bones, muscles, ligaments, adipose tissue, and skin and moreover, involves interactions among these tissue types. To achieve the most natural and harmonious rejuvenation of the face, all changes that result from the aging process should be corrected, which generally involves treatment with more than a single agent or technology. Presentations described innovative treatment algorithms for the face and body and focused on patient's desires for natural-looking rejuvenation and how this requires a three-dimensional approach combining products that relax the musculature, volumize, and re-drape the skin. Besides treating the aging face, these procedures are increasingly used to enhance facial features as well as to delay facial aging in younger patients. The presentations covered patients from different ethnicities as well as the treatment of non-facial areas, with a particular focus on the use of Ultherapy® for skin lifting and tightening and new aesthetic procedures such as Cellfina® and diluted Radiesse®. On October 14, 1976, the Georgetown University Family Center, under the auspices of the Department of Psychiatry, sponsored its first Conference on Aging within the Family and Society. It focused on the value of intergenerational contact and continuity across generations. The elderly person exists within the multigenerational family unit, and this unit exists within society. The speakers addressed the problem of the elderly person within the multigenerational family unit and the forces that promote cutoff between the generations--resulting in the disruption of individual and family functioning. Dr. Bowen was the first of several speakers who addressed aspects of the aging process in the context of the multigenerational family and the society of which it is a part. A conference transcript was published in the Georgetown Medical Bulletin in February 1977. The American Geriatrics Society, with support from the National Institute on Aging and other funders, held its eighth Bedside-to-Bench research conference, entitled 'Sleep, Circadian Rhythms, and Aging: New Avenues for Improving Brain Health, Physical Health and Functioning,' October 4 to 6, 2015, in Bethesda, Maryland. Part of a conference series addressing three common geriatric syndromes-delirium, sleep and circadian rhythm ( SCR) disturbance, and voiding dysfunction-the series highlighted relationships and pertinent clinical and pathophysiological commonalities between these three geriatric syndromes. The conference provided a forum for discussing current sleep, circadian rhythm, and aging research; identifying gaps in knowledge; and developing a research agenda to inform future investigative efforts. On November 1-2, 2014, there took place in Beijing, China, the first International Conference on Aging and Disease (ICAD 2014) of the International Society on Aging and Disease (ISOAD). The conference participants presented a wide and exciting front of work dedicated to amelioration of agingrelated conditions, ranging from regenerative medicine through developing geroprotective substances, elucidating a wide range of mechanisms of aging and aging-related diseases, from energy metabolism through genetics and immunomodulation to systems biology. The conference further emphasized the need to intensify and support research on aging and aging-related diseases to provide solutions for the urgent health challenges of the aging society. A report is presented from a May 20-21, 2011 sociology conference in Berlin, Germany on the sociological aspects and implications of aging as well as an October 21-22, 2011 sociology conference in Kiel, Germany. Topics of discussion included the importance of social interaction for older people, the social roles of older people, and the view of older people by society at large.

Based upon research presented at the 2011 Festival of International Conferences on Caregiving, Disability, Aging and Technology (FICCDAT)-and specifically the Growing Older with a Disability (GOWD) conference, this paper identifies areas where bridging building between aging and disability is needed to support older adults aging into or with disabilities. Five focal areas emerged: 1) The Need to Forward Bridging Between Aging and Disability Sectors, 2) Theoretical Frameworks of Individual Aging that Facilitate Bridging, 3) Bridging through Consumer Participation and Involvement, 4) Bridging Through Knowledge Transfer and 5) Bridging Opportunities in Long-Term Supports and Services and Assistive Technologies. Discussion of themes is provided within both international and Canadian contexts, reflecting the interests of FICCDAT and GOWD organizers in discussing how to improve bridging in Canada. Information is presented on the conference "The Cultural Politics of Ageing in the Nineteenth Century: Interdisciplinary Perspectives," held November 24 to 26, 2011 at the University of Regensburg in Regensburg, Germany. Topics include the medical categories of gerontology and geriatrics, aging in the novel "The Old Wives' Tale" by Arnold Bennett, and aging in the writings of English politician and author Edward Bulwer-Lytton. Speakers included scholars Lynn Botelho, Anna Farkas, and Kay Heath.

The article discusses the history of Elder Justice Act signed into law as part of Affordable Care Act on March 23, 2010. In 1950, the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare awarded demonstration projects for protective service units, viewed as unofficial starting point of the history of elder abuse as a policy issue followed later by 1961 White House Conference on Aging. In the 1970s, authorization for adult protective services was established under Social Security Act.

Information about topics discussed at the First Asia Pacific Conference on Ageing (APCA) organized by Gerontological Society of Singapore on March 24-26, 2012 is presented. Topics included harmonization of two classification systems of International Classification of Disease (ICD) and Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) for depression and dementia. It also discussed themes in the revision of classification architecture for depression and dementia across classification systems of ICD and DSM.

The presentation, analysis and summary of the 61st Annual Scientific Meeting of the British Society for Research on Ageing - BSRA and of the 14th Congress of the International Association of Biomedical Gerontology - IABG are the alignment to the current stage and, especially, to future directions of transforming present day reality of an aging people with disabilities into long-lived, competitive psychologically and physically active human beings, with much longer ontogenetic periods. AbstractEvidence is accumulating that the first genuine antiaging interventions (e.g., approved pharmaceutical, nutriceutical, and stem-cell-based therapies) will become available within the next decades. Model organism data, next-generation sequencing, and further advances call for sophisticated large-scale data analysis. To present the state-of-the art and to talk about upcoming tasks and challenges in the bioinformatics and systems biology of aging-related data, a workshop on Bioinformatics in Ageing Research convened leading experts from Europe on May 4–5, 2010, in Rostock/Warnemünde. Information about several papers discussed at the 5th International Academy on Nutrition and Aging (IANA) Meeting is presented. Topics include one about plasma marine omega 3 fatty acids and its association with white matter hyperintensities in older people, the Souvenaid clinical trial program on the study about the medical nutrition for patients with Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and a study on health, aging and body composition through the estimates of body weight of old persons. Other studies include a nutrition intervention study for early-stage AD.

On 28–29 September 2004, the National Institute on Aging (NIA) convened scientists for a workshop on the aging female brain focused on translating into clinical practice discoveries concerning estrogens and progestogens. Workshop objectives were to examine effects of estrogen and progestogen on brain and cognitive function in relation to aging, to examine consistencies and apparent discrepancies between Women’s Health Initiative Memory Study findings and other research on cognitive function, to determine whether additional hormone interventions could be developed in this area, and to offer advice on design of clinical trials for other interventions that might ameliorate cognitive aging. Following the workshop, participants joined by other interested scientists organized into regional work groups to continue the dialogue begun in Bethesda and to propose recommendations for NIA. The resulting recommendations, referred to as the “Frontiers Proposal for Estrogen and Cognitive Aging”, acknowledge the persistence of critical gaps in our understanding of how decline in ovarian steroid secretion during reproductive aging and use of ovarian steroid hormone therapy affect normal brain function and risk for late-life neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease. There is a pressing need for preclinical, human, and integrated studies on the relationship between the menopausal transition and midlife exposures to estrogens, progestogens and related compounds, and risks for age-associated cognitive disorders. Research is also needed on better predictors of adverse cognitive outcomes, valid biomarkers for risks associated with hormone therapy use, enhanced tools for monitoring brain function and disease progression, and novel forms of therapy for improving long-term cognitive outcomes. Abstract: The Douglas Mental Health University Institute, in collaboration with the McGill Centre for Studies in Aging, organized a 2-day symposium entitled “Biological Changes Associated with Healthy Versus Pathological Aging” that was held in 13 and 14 December 2007 on the Douglas campus. The symposium involved presentations on current trends in aging and dementia research across several sub-disciplines: genetics, neurochemistry, structural and functional neuroimaging and clinical treatment and rehabilitation. The goal of this symposium was to provide a forum for knowledge-transfer between scientists and clinicians with different specializations in order to promote cross-fertilization of research ideas that would lead to future collaborative neuroscience research in aging and dementia. In this review article, we summarize the presentations made by the 13 international scientists at the symposium and highlight: (i) past research, and future research trends in neuroscience of aging and dementia and (ii) links across levels of analysis that can lead to fruitful transdisciplinary research programs that will advance knowledge about the neurobiological changes associated with healthy aging and dementia. The article provides information on the seventh European conference on mitochondrial pathology or Euromit VII in Stockholm, Sweden on June 11-14, 2008, with support from the "Journal of International Medicine" and the Max Planck Gesellschaft. It was attended by 500 participants and covered various topics extending from basic mechanisms regulating mitochondrial function to the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in human disease and ageing. On March 19, 2008 a Symposium on Pathophysiology of Ageing and Age-Related diseases was held in Palermo, Italy. Here, the lectures of M. Racchi on History and future perspectives of Alzheimer Biomarkers and of G. Scapagnini on Cellular Stress Response and Brain Ageing are summarized. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a heterogeneous and progressive neurodegenerative disease, which in Western society mainly accounts for clinica dementia. AD prevention is an important goal of ongoing research. Two objectives must be accomplished to make prevention feasible: i) individuals at high risk of AD need to be identified before the earliest symptoms become evident, by which time extensive neurodegeneration has already occurred and intervention to prevent the disease is likely to be less successful and ii) safe and effective interventions need to be developed that lead to a decrease in expression of this pathology. On the whole, data here reviewed strongly suggest that the measurement of conformationally altered p53 in blood cells has a high ability to discriminate AD cases from normal ageing, Parkinson's disease and other dementias. On the other hand, available data on the involvement of curcumin in restoring cellular homeostasis and rebalancing redox equilibrium, suggest that curcumin might be a useful adjunct in the treatment of neurodegenerative illnesses characterized by inflammation, such as AD. The article discusses age-related health and social work in the U.S. American society is aging. The proportion of people over age 65, only 4% in 1900, was 12.75 in 1994 and is expected to increase to 17% by 2020. A couple of recent gatherings in Washington D.C. illustrate just how strongly social work has established itself in gerontological policy circles. The most notable was the Fourth White House Conference on Aging held from May 2 to May 5,1995. This underreported representative gathering of 2,260 older Americans and their advocates debated and adopted 50 resolutions to help the government chart the course of aging policy over the next decade. The top priorities of the White House Conference included the preservation of social security, the Older Americans Act and the Medicaid and Medicare programs. Other priorities included a call for increased federal involvement in training health care workers at all levels and increased federal, state and regional funding for education in geriatric mental health.
