Multiple observations now suggest that the hydrogen reionization may have ended well below redshift six. While there has previously been no conclusive proof of extended neutral islands in the |$z \lt 6$| intergalactic medium, it is possible that such islands give rise to the giant Ly  |$\alpha$| absorption troughs seen in the spectra of high-redshift quasars. Here, we present evidence that the deepest and longest known Ly  |$\alpha$| trough at |$z \,\lt\, 6$|⁠ , towards ULAS J0148 + 0600 (J0148), is associated with damping wing absorption. The evidence comes from a window of strong Ly  |$\alpha$| transmission at the edge of the J0148 proximity zone. We show that the relatively smooth profile of this transmission window is highly unlikely to arise from resonant absorption alone, but is consistent with the presence of a damping wing. We further argue that the damping wing is unlikely to arise from a compact source due to the lack of associated metal lines, and is more likely to arise from an extended neutral island associated with the giant Ly  |$\alpha$| trough. We investigate the physical conditions that may give rise to the strong transmission window, and speculate that it may signal an usually deep void, nearby ionizing sources, and/or the recent passage of an ionization front. We perform the first magnetic field strength survey of Class I and Flat Spectrum (FS) sources using K -band observations with iSHELL. We obtained new observations of 42 Class I and FS sources and additionally included 10 sources from the archive. We detect photospheric lines in 44 of the sources, in addition to Br γ, H2, and CO emission in several objects. We model the photospheric absorption lines of 32 Class I and FS sources and measure their magnetic field strengths, K -band temperatures, gravities, projected rotational velocities, and infrared veiling values. We put the physical properties of Class I and FS sources in context by comparing them to the values derived for a sample of Class II sources. We find that (a) the average magnetic field strength of Class I and FS sources 〈 B 〉 = 2.0 ± 0.15 kG is consistent with the average magnetic field strength of Class II sources 〈 B 〉 = 1.8 ± 0.15 kG, and (b) the average gravity of Class I and FS objects log g = 3.43 ± 0.07 is lower than the average gravity of Class II sources log g = 3.75 ± 0.04 , although there is significant overlap between both gravity distributions. Furthermore, using stellar evolutionary models, we deduce that Class I and FS sources have a median age of ∼0.6 Myr, and are, as a group, younger than the Class II stars with a median age of ∼3 Myr. Our results confirm that Class I and FS sources host strong magnetic fields on their photospheres. Recent quasar absorption line observations suggest that reionization may end as late as |$z \approx 5.3$|⁠. As a means to search for large neutral hydrogen islands at |$z\ \lt\ 6$|⁠ , we revisit long dark gaps in the Ly  |$\beta$| forest in Very Large Telescope/X-Shooter and Keck/Echellette Spectrograph and Imager quasar spectra. We stack the Ly  |$\alpha$| forest corresponding to both edges of these Ly  |$\beta$| dark gaps and identify a damping wing-like extended absorption profile. The average redshift of the stacked forest is |$z=5.8$|⁠. By comparing these observations with reionization simulations, we infer that such a damping wing-like feature can be naturally explained if these gaps are at least partially created by neutral islands. Conversely, simulated dark gaps lacking neutral hydrogen struggle to replicate the observed damping wing features. Furthermore, this damping wing-like profile implies that the volume-averaged neutral hydrogen fraction must be |$\langle x_{\rm H\,{\small {I}}} \rangle \ge 6.1 \pm 3.9~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| at |$z = 5.8$|⁠. The turbulent ionosphere causes phase shifts to incoming radio waves on a broad range of temporal and spatial scales. When an interferometer is not sufficiently calibrated for the direction-dependent ionospheric effects, the time-varying phase shifts can cause the signal to decorrelate. The ionosphere's influence over various spatiotemporal scales introduces a baseline-dependent effect on the interferometric array. We study the impact of baseline-dependent decorrelation on high-redshift observations with the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR). Data sets with a range of ionospheric corruptions are simulated using a thin-screen ionosphere model, and calibrated using the state-of-the-art LOFAR epoch of reionization pipeline. For the first time ever, we show the ionospheric impact on various stages of the calibration process including an analysis of the transfer of gain errors from longer to shorter baselines using realistic end-to-end simulations. We find that direction-dependent calibration for source subtraction leaves excess power of up to two orders of magnitude above the thermal noise at the largest spectral scales in the cylindrically averaged autopower spectrum under normal ionospheric conditions. However, we demonstrate that this excess power can be removed through Gaussian process regression, leaving no excess power above the 10 per cent level for a |$5~$| km diffractive scale. We conclude that ionospheric errors, in the absence of interactions with other aggravating effects, do not constitute a dominant component in the excess power observed in LOFAR epoch of reionization observations of the North Celestial Pole. Radiative transfer (RT) is a crucial ingredient for self-consistent modelling of numerous astrophysical phenomena across cosmic history. However, on-the-fly integration into radiation hydrodynamics (RHD) simulations is computationally demanding, particularly due to the stringent time-stepping conditions and increased dimensionality inherent in multifrequency collisionless Boltzmann physics. The emergence of exascale supercomputers, equipped with extensive CPU cores and GPU accelerators, offers new opportunities for enhancing RHD simulations. We present the first steps towards optimizing arepo - rt for such high-performance computing environments. We implement a novel node-to-node (n-to-n) communication strategy that utilizes shared memory to substitute intranode communication with direct memory access. Furthermore, combining multiple internode messages into a single message substantially enhances network bandwidth utilization and performance for large-scale simulations on modern supercomputers. The single-message n-to-n approach also improves performance on smaller scale machines with less optimized networks. Furthermore, by transitioning all RT-related calculations to GPUs, we achieve a significant computational speedup of around 15 for standard benchmarks compared to the original CPU implementation. As a case study, we perform cosmological RHD simulations of the Epoch of Reionization, employing a similar setup as the THESAN project. In this context, RT becomes sub-dominant such that even without modifying the core arepo codebase, there is an overall threefold improvement in efficiency. The advancements presented here have broad implications, potentially transforming the complexity and scalability of future simulations for a wide variety of astrophysical studies. Intensity mapping experiments will soon have surveyed large swathes of the sky, providing information about the underlying matter distribution of our early Universe. The resulting maps can be used to recover statistical information, such as the power spectrum, about the measured spectral lines (for example, H  i , [C  ii ], and [O  iii ]). However precise power spectrum measurements, such as the 21 cm autocorrelation, continue to be challenged by the presence of bright foregrounds and non-trivial systematics. By cross-correlating different data sets, it may be possible to mitigate the effects of both foreground uncertainty and uncorrelated instrumental systematics. Beyond their own merit, cross-correlations could also be used to recover autocorrelation information. Such a technique has been proposed in the literature for recovering the 21 cm power spectrum. Generalizing this result, we develop a statistical framework for combining multiple cross-correlation signals in order to infer information about the corresponding autocorrelations. We do this first within the least squares estimator framework, and show how one can derive their estimator, along with several alternative estimators. We also investigate the posterior distribution of recovered autocorrelation and associated model parameters. We find that for certain noise regimes and cosmological signal modelling assumptions this procedure is effective at recovering autospectra from a set of cross-correlations. Patchy reionization generates kinematic Sunyaev–Zel'dovich (kSZ) anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Large-scale velocity perturbations along the line of sight modulate the small-scale kSZ power spectrum, leading to a trispectrum (or four-point function) in the CMB that depends on the physics of reionization. We investigate the challenges in detecting this trispectrum and use tools developed for CMB lensing, such as realization-dependent bias subtraction and cross-correlation based estimators, to counter uncertainties in the instrumental noise and assumed CMB power spectrum. We also find that both lensing and extragalactic foregrounds can impart larger trispectrum contributions than the reionization kSZ signal. We present a range of mitigation methods for both of these sources of contamination, validated on microwave-sky simulations. We use ACT DR6 and Planck data to calculate an upper limit on the reionization kSZ trispectrum from a measurement dominated by foregrounds. We use deep spectroscopy from the SAMI (Sydney-AAO Multi-object Integral) Galaxy Survey to explore the precision of the fundamental plane (FP) of early-type galaxies as a distance indicator for future single-fibre spectroscopy surveys. We study the optimal trade-off between sample size and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and investigate which additional observables can be used to construct hyperplanes with smaller intrinsic scatter than the FP. We add increasing levels of random noise (parametrized as effective exposure time) to the SAMI spectra to study the effect of increasing measurement uncertainties on the FP- and hyperplane-inferred distances. We find that, using direct-fit methods, the values of the FP and hyperplane best-fitting coefficients depend on the spectral SNR, and reach asymptotic values for a mean |$\langle \mathrm{ SNR} \rangle =40\, \mathrm{\mathring{\rm A}}^{-1}$|⁠. As additional variables for the FP we consider three stellar-population observables: light-weighted age, stellar mass-to-light ratio, and a novel combination of Lick indices (⁠|$I_\mathrm{age}$|⁠). For an |$\langle \mathrm{ SNR} \rangle =45~\mathrm{\mathring{\rm A}}^{-1}$| (equivalent to 1-h exposure on a 4-m telescope), all three hyperplanes outperform the FP as distance indicators. Being an empirical spectral index, |$I_\mathrm{age}$| avoids the model-dependent uncertainties and bias underlying age and mass-to-light ratio measurements, yet yields a 10 per cent reduction of the median distance uncertainty compared to the FP. We also find that, as a by-product, the |$I_\mathrm{age}$| hyperplane removes most of the reported environment bias of the FP. After accounting for the different SNR, these conclusions also apply to a 50 times larger sample from SDSS-III (Sloan Digital Sky Survey). The chemical abundances of Milky Way's (MW's) satellites reflect their star formation histories (SFHs), yet, due to the difficulty of determining the ages of old stars, the SFHs of most satellites are poorly measured. Ongoing and upcoming surveys will obtain around 10 times more medium-resolution spectra for stars in satellites than are currently available. To correctly extract SFHs from large samples of chemical abundances, the relationship between chemical abundances and SFHs needs to be clarified. Here, we perform a high-resolution cosmological zoom-in simulation of a MW-like galaxy with detailed models of star formation, supernova (SN) feedback, and metal diffusion. We quantify SFHs, metallicity distribution functions, and the α -element (Mg, Ca, and Si) abundances in satellites of the host galaxy. We find that star formation in most simulated satellites is quenched before infalling to their host. Star formation episodes in simulated satellites are separated by a few hundred Myr owing to SN feedback; each star formation event produces groups of stars with similar [ α /Fe] and [Fe/H]. We then perform a mock observation of the upcoming Subaru Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) observations. We find that Subaru PFS will be able to detect distinct groups of stars in [ α /Fe] versus [Fe/H] space, produced by episodic star formation. This result means that episodic SFHs can be estimated from the chemical abundances of ≳1000 stars determined with medium-resolution spectroscopy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Exploring the marks left by galactic accretion in the Milky Way helps us understand how our Galaxy was formed. However, finding and studying accreted stars and the galaxies they came from has been challenging. This study uses a simulation from the Numerical Investigation of a Hundred Astronomical Objects project, which now includes a wider range of chemical compositions, to find better ways to spot these accreted stars. By comparing our findings with data from the GALAH spectroscopic survey, we confirm that the observationally established diagnostics of [Al/Fe] versus [Mg/Mn] also show a separation of in situ and accreted stars in the simulation, but stars from different accretion events tend to overlap in this plane even without observational uncertainties. Looking at the relationship between stellar age and linear or logarithmic abundances, such as [Fe/H], we can clearly separate different groups of these stars if the uncertainties in their chemical makeup are less than 0.15 dex and less than 20 per cent for their ages. This method shows promise for studying the history of the Milky Way and other galaxies. Our work highlights how important it is to have accurate measurements of stellar ages and chemical content. It also shows how simulations can help us understand the complex process of galaxies merging and suggest how these events might relate to the differences we see between our Galaxy's thin and thick disc stars. Excess chromospheric emissions within deep photospheric lines are effective proxies of stellar magnetism for FGK stars. This emission decays with stellar age and is a potential determinant of this important stellar quantity. We report absolutely calibrated H  |$\alpha$| chromospheric fluxes for 511 solar-type stars in a wide interval of precisely determined masses, [Fe/H], ages, and evolution states from high S/N, moderately high |$-$| resolution spectra. The comparison of H  |$\alpha$| and H + K chromospheric fluxes reveals a metallicity bias (absent from H  |$\alpha$|⁠) affecting Ca  ii H + K fluxes thereby metal-rich stars with deep line profiles mimic low chromospheric flux levels, and vice versa for metal-poor stars. This bias blurs the age–activity relation, precluding age determinations for old, inactive stars unless mass and [Fe/H] are calibrated into the relation. The H + K lines being the most widely studied tool to quantify magnetic activity in FGK stars, care should be exercised in its use whenever wide ranges of mass and [Fe/H] are involved. The H  |$\alpha$| age–activity–mass–metallicity calibration appears to be in line with the theoretical expectation that (other parameters being equal) more massive stars possess narrower convective zones and are less active than less massive stars, while more metal-rich stars have deeper convective zones and appear more active than metal-poorer stars. If regarded statistically in tandem with other age diagnostics, H  |$\alpha$| chromospheric fluxes may be suitable to constrain ages for FGK stars with acceptable precision. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The interactions between the Magellanic Clouds significantly affect the shape and distribution of the young stellar population, particularly in the periphery of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We present the first far-UV (FUV) map of the north-east SMC-Shell region using the Ultra Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) onboard AstroSat. The detected FUV stars are combined with Gaia Early Data Release 3 data to create a FUV–optical catalogue of ∼14 400 stars. FUV–optical colour-magnitude diagrams are used along with isochrones to estimate the stellar ages. The detected stars are formed in multiple episodes. We identified two episodes of star formation (∼60 and ∼260 Myr ago), where the episode at ∼260 Myr is linked to the recent interaction with the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and the episode at ∼60 Myr is linked to the pericentric passage of the SMC around our Galaxy. The median proper motion (PM) and velocity dispersion are found to be similar to the SMC main body, indicating that this region has not experienced significant tidal effects. The FUV stellar surface density and the dispersion in PM suggest that the extent of the inner SMC in the north-east direction to be around 2.2°. We detect arm-like and arc-like structures in the FUV stellar density map, and their kinematics appear to be similar to the SMC main body. These extended outer features are the spatial stellar overdensities formed over multiple episodes of star formation, but without apparent kinematic distinction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, the study of the Milky Way has significantly advanced due to extensive spectroscopic surveys of its stars, complemented by astroseismic and astrometric data. However, it remains disjoint from recent advancements in understanding the physics of the Galactic interstellar medium (ISM). This paper introduces a new model for the chemical evolution of the Milky Way that can be constrained on stellar data, because it combines a state-of-the-art ISM model with a Milky Way stellar disc model. Utilizing a data set of red clump stars from APOGEE, known for their precise ages and metallicities, we concentrate on the last 6 billion years – a period marked by Milky Way's secular evolution. We examine the oxygen abundance in the low- |$\alpha$| disc stars relative to their ages and birth radii, validating or constraining critical ISM parameters that remain largely unexplored in extragalactic observations. The models that successfully reproduce the radius–metallicity distribution and the age–metallicity distribution of stars without violating existing ISM observations indicate a need for modest differential oxygen enrichment in Galactic outflows, meaning that the oxygen abundance of outflows is higher than the local ISM abundance, irrespective of outflow mass loading. The models also suggest somewhat elevated ISM gas velocity dispersion levels over the past 6 billion years compared to galaxies of similar mass. The extra turbulence necessary could result from energy from gas accretion onto the Galaxy, supernovae clustering in the ISM, or increased star formation efficiency per freefall time. We report the discovery of a compact star-forming galaxy at z = 9.380 in the GOODS-North field (named GN-z9p4), which shows numerous strong UV-optical emission lines and a single UV line, N IV] λ1486. This makes GN-z9p4 the third-highest redshift N-emitter known to date. We determined the nebular abundances of H, C, N, O and Ne, along with the size and other physical properties of this object, then compared them to those of the other N-emitters known so far and to other star-forming galaxies. Using the direct method, we found a metallicity of 12 + log(O/H) = 7.37 ± 0.15, which stands as one of the lowest among N-emitters. The N/O abundance ratio is highly super-solar, while C/O and Ne/O are normal compared to other galaxies at low metallicity. We show that the compactness of GN-z9p4 (with an effective radius of 118 ± 16 pc at 2 μm) and other N-emitters translates to very high stellar mass and star formation rate (SFR) surface densities, which could serve as a criterium for identifying other N-emitters. We present a study of kinematic asymmetries from the integral field spectroscopic surveys MAGPI and SAMI. By comparing the asymmetries in the ionized gas and stars, we aim to disentangle the physical processes that contribute to kinematic disturbances. We normalize deviations from circular motion by S 05, allowing us to study kinematic asymmetries in the stars and gas, regardless of kinematic temperature. We find a similar distribution of stellar asymmetries in galaxies where we do and do not detect ionized gas, suggesting that whatever is driving the stellar asymmetries does not always lead to gas removal. In both MAGPI and SAMI, we find an anticorrelation between stellar asymmetry and stellar mass, that is absent in the gas asymmetries. After stellar mass and mean-stellar-age matching distributions, we find that at all stellar masses, MAGPI galaxies display larger stellar asymmetry compared to SAMI galaxies. In both MAGPI and SAMI galaxies, we find that star-forming galaxies with old mean-stellar-ages typically have larger asymmetries in their gas compared to their stars, whereas galaxies with young mean-stellar-ages have larger asymmetries in their stars compared to their gas. We developed a grid of stellar rotation models for low-mass and solar-type classical T Tauri stars (CTTS; 0.3 M ⊙ < M * < 1.2 M ⊙). These models incorporate the star–disk interaction and magnetospheric ejections to investigate the evolution of the stellar rotation rate as a function of the mass of the star M *, the magnetic field (B *), and stellar wind ( M ̇ wind ). We compiled and determined stellar parameters for 208 CTTS, such as projected rotational velocity v sin (i) , mass accretion rate M ̇ acc , stellar mass M *, ages, and estimated rotational periods using Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) data. We also estimated a representative value of the mass-loss rate for our sample using the [O i ] λ 6300 spectral line. Our results confirm that v sin (i) measurements in CTTS agree with the rotation rates provided by our spin models in the accretion-powered stellar winds picture. In addition, we used the approximate Bayesian computation technique to explore the connection between the model parameters and the observational properties of CTTS. We find that the evolution of v sin (i) with age might be regulated by variations in (1) the intensity of B * and (2) the fraction of the accretion flow ejected in magnetic winds, removing angular momentum from these systems. The youngest stars in our sample (∼1 Myr) show a median branching ratio M ̇ wind / M ̇ acc ∼ 0.16 and median B * ∼ 2000 G, in contrast to ∼0.01 and 1000 G, respectively, for stars with ages ≳3 Myr. We present Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys photometry of an arc structure of stars in the southern halo of M82. The structure is located at a projected height of ≈5 kpc from the disc of M82 but its stellar content exhibits a younger mean age than that of typical halo stars. We measured the distance, mean age, and peak metallicity of the stars in the arc and used them to determine the structure's origin. The arc colour–magnitude diagram yields a tip of the red giant branch (RGB) distance of 3.63 ± 0.08 Mpc, similar to that of M82, confirming its association with the galaxy. The colour–magnitude diagram also reveals a population of predominantly young stars with a mean age of ≈100–160 Myr, which is similar to that of the young stars formed in the tidal debris between M81, M82, and NGC 3077. We derived the mean metallicity of the halo stars surrounding the arc to be [Fe/H] ≈ −1.0, similar to that of the RGB population of the halo of M81. The RGB stars in the arc, while they are slightly more metal-rich than the halo RGB, show no spatial correlation with the young stars, suggesting that the arc is consists of mainly young stellar population. Furthermore, the observed age gradient along the structure of the arc indicates that the arc began forming from the closer side to M82, then moving outward. Taken together, the results suggest that the formation of the young stars that give rise to the arc structure could have been triggered by the interactions between M82's southern outflow and the H  i gas clouds surrounding it, representing a snapshot of a tidal dwarf galaxy in the process of forming. We compare the performance of several popular spectrum fitting codes (firefly, starlight, pypipe3d , and ppxf), and a deep-learning convolutional neural network (starnet), in recovering known stellar population properties (mean stellar age, stellar metallicity, stellar mass-to-light ratio M */ L r and the internal E (B − V)) of simulated galaxy spectra in optical wavelengths. Our mock spectra are constructed from star-formation histories from the IllustrisTNG100-1 simulation. These spectra mimic the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) through a novel method of including the noise, sky residuals, and emission lines taken directly from SDSS. We find that starnet vastly outperforms all conventional codes in both speed and recovery of stellar population properties (error scatter <0.08 dex, average biases <0.02 dex for all tested quantities), but it requires an appropriate training set. Of the non-machine-learning codes, ppxf was a factor of 3–4 times faster than the other codes, and was the best in recovering stellar population properties (error scatter of <0.11 dex, average biases <0.08 dex). However, the errors and biases are strongly dependent on both true and predicted values of stellar age and metallicity, and signal-to-noise ratio. The biases of all codes can approach 0.15 dex in stellar ages, metallicities and log  M */ L r, but remain ≲0.05 for E (B−V). Using unrealistic Gaussian noise in the construction of mock spectra will underestimate the errors in the metallicities by a factor of 2 or more, and mocks without emission lines will underestimate the errors in stellar age and M */ L r by a factor of 2. Nearby associations of stars which are coeval are important benchmark laboratories because they provide robust measurements of stellar ages. The study of such coeval groups makes it possible to better understand star formation by studying the initial mass function, the binary fraction or the circumstellar disks of stars, to determine how the initially dense populations of young stars gradually disperse to form the field population, and to shed light on how the properties of stars, exoplanets and substellar objects evolve with distinct snapshots along their lifetime. The advent of large-scale missions such as Gaia is reshaping our understanding or stellar kinematics in the Solar neighborhood and beyond, and offers the opportunity to detect a large number of loose, coeval stellar associations for the first time, which evaded prior detection because of their low density or the faintness of their members. In parallel, advances in detection and characterization of exoplanets and substellar objects are starting to unveil the detailed properties of extrasolar atmospheres, as well as population-level distributions in fundamental exoplanet properties such as radii, masses, and orbital parameters. Accurate ages are still sparsely available to interpret the evolution of both exoplanets and substellar objects, and both fields are now ripe for detailed age investigations because we are starting to uncover ever-closer low-density associations that previously escaped detection, as well as exoplanets and ever lower-mass members of more distant open clusters and star-forming regions. In this paper, we review some recent advances in the identification and characterization of nearby associations, the methods by which stellar ages are measured, and some of the direct applications of the study of young associations such as the emergent field of isolated planetary-mass objects. A key event in the history of the Milky Way is the formation of the bar. This event affects the subsequent structural and dynamical evolution of the entire Galaxy. When the bar formed, gas was likely rapidly funnelled to the centre of the Galaxy settling in a star-forming nuclear disc. The Milky Way bar formation can then be dated by considering the age distribution of the oldest stars in the formed nuclear stellar disc. In this highly obscured and crowded region, reliable age tracers are limited, but bright, high-amplitude Mira variables make useful age indicators as they follow a period–age relation. We fit dynamical models to the proper motions of a sample of Mira variables in the Milky Way's nuclear stellar disc region. Weak evidence for inside-out growth and both radial and vertical dynamical heating with time of the nuclear stellar disc is presented, suggesting that the nuclear stellar disc is dynamically well-mixed. Furthermore, for Mira variables around a ∼350-d period, there is a clear transition from nuclear stellar disc-dominated kinematics to background bar-bulge-dominated kinematics. Using a Mira variable period–age relation calibrated in the solar neighbourhood, this suggests the nuclear stellar disc formed in a significant burst in star formation |$(8\pm 1)\, \mathrm{Gyr}$| ago, although the data are also weakly consistent with a more gradual formation of the nuclear stellar disc at even earlier epochs. This implies a relatively early formation time for the Milky Way bar (⁠|$\gtrsim 8\, \mathrm{Gyr}$|⁠), which has implications for the growth and state of the young Milky Way and its subsequent history. Asteroseismology can precisely characterize stars, but the accuracy of seismic inference is still an open question. In this work, we use three evolved stars, including one late subgiant (EPIC 211411922) and two young red giants (EPIC 211409560 and EPIC 211416749) in the open cluster M67 to validate seismic inferences of stellar mass and age. We start by measuring oscillation mode frequencies and identifying acoustic and mixed modes in all three stars. We then fit the stars to determine their masses and ages with a detailed modelling approach. Our age estimates for all stars agree well with the literature consensus age range of M67 (3.0–5.0 Gyr). Mass estimates for EPIC 211411922 and EPIC 211409560 are sensible because they are slightly higher than the typical turn-off mass of the cluster. The inferred mass for EPIC 211416749 is underestimated by 5–10 per cent compared with the turn-off mass, but this could be caused by poor data quality. Context. O-type stars are known to significantly contribute to both the dynamics and evolution of galaxies. Massive and luminous, they probably control and regulate the galaxies star formation rates. The stellar feedback generated by such cosmic beasts can strongly affect the local star formation rate, with effects in the current (and future) generations of low and intermediate mass stars, and possibly also in the disruption process of the galaxies' giant gas reservoirs. Aims. For this work I performed a redetermination of the spectral types and effective temperatures of the Galactic O-type stars MSP182, MSP183, MSP199, VPHAS-01338, and VPHAS-01273. Methods. From a careful examination of the spectral features present in the blue optical spectral region, it was possible to identify several nitrogen lines usually only seen in the blue optical spectra of O2–O3 stars. From the nitrogen ionic equivalent width ratios measured in the spectra of MSP182, MSP183, MSP199, VPHAS-01338, and VPHAS-01273, and in those of standard stars of the O2–O4 spectral types, earlier spectral types and hotter effective temperature values were derived. Results. Two O2V((f*))z, together with three new O3 V stars are now firmly identified in the Westerlund 2 region. Besides RFS1 in NGC 3603, the O2 V stars found in Westerlund 2 are the only other exemplars known to date in the Milky Way. From the nitrogen equivalent width line ratios measured in the spectra of standard stars of the O2–O4 spectral types, linear relations between the N IVλ4058/N IIIλ4640 ratio and the effective temperature in the 47 000–51 000 K range were derived. Based on my spectroscopic analysis of the science targets and the use of a HRD, a mean heliocentric distance of 5 kpc to Westerlund 2 was computed, a result that is in line with the mean heliocentric distance of 5.3 ± 1.5 kpc obtained from the associated Gaia DR3 parallaxes and distances. The Westerlund 2 massive stars studied in this work probably share a common evolutionary process that might be representative of the evolutionary ages of a large fraction of the cluster's O-type stellar population, which seems to be much younger than 1 Myr. Context. The theory of rotational and chemical evolution is incomplete, thereby limiting the accuracy of model-dependent stellar mass and age determinations. The γ Doradus (γ Dor) pulsators are excellent points of calibration for the current state-of-the-art stellar evolution models, as their gravity modes probe the physical conditions in the deep stellar interior. Yet, individual asteroseismic modelling of these stars is not always possible because of insufficient observed oscillation modes. Aims. This paper presents a novel method to derive distributions of the stellar mass, age, core-boundary mixing efficiency, and initial rotation rates for γ Dor stars. Methods. We computed a grid of rotating stellar evolution models covering the entire γ Dor instability strip. We then used the observed distributions of the luminosity, effective temperature, buoyancy travel time, and near-core rotation frequency of a sample of 539 stars to assign a statistical weight to each of our models. This weight is a measure of how likely the combination of a specific model is. We then computed weighted histograms to derive the most likely distributions of the fundamental stellar properties. Results. We find that the rotation frequency at zero-age main sequence follows a normal distribution, peaking at around 25% of the critical Keplerian rotation frequency. The probability-density function for extent of the core-boundary mixing zone, given by a factor of fCBM times the local pressure scale height (assuming an exponentially decaying parameterisation), decreases linearly with increasing fCBM. Conclusions. Converting the distribution of fractions of critical rotation at the zero-age main sequence to units of d−1, we find most F-type stars start the main sequence with a rotation frequency between 0.5 d−1 and 2 d−1. Aims. We investigated the theoretical biases affecting the asteroseismic grid-based estimates of stellar mass, radius, and age in the presence of a mismatch between the heavy element mixture of observed stars and stellar models. Methods. We performed a controlled simulation adopting a stellar effective temperature, [Fe/H], an average large frequency spacing, and a frequency of maximum oscillation power as observational constraints. Synthetic stars were sampled from grids of stellar models computed with different [α/Fe] values from 0.0 to 0.4. The mass, radius, and age of these objects were then estimated by adopting a grid of models with a fixed [α/Fe] value of 0.0. The experiment was repeated assuming different sets of observational uncertainties. In the reference scenario, we adopted an uncertainty of 1.5% in seismic parameters, 50 K in effective temperature, and 0.05 dex in [Fe/H]. A higher uncertainty in the atmospheric constraints was also adopted in order to explore the impact on the precision of the observations of the estimated stellar parameters. Results. Our Monte Carlo experiment showed that estimated parameters are biased up to 3% in mass, 1.5% in radius, and 4% in age when the reference uncertainty scenario was adopted. These values correspond to 45%, 48%, and 16% of the estimated uncertainty in the stellar parameters. These non-negligible biases in mass and radius disappear when adopting larger observational uncertainties because of the possibility of the fitting algorithm exploring a wider range of possible solutions. However, in this scenario, the age is significantly biased by −8%. Finally, we verified that the stellar mass, radius, and age can be estimated with a high accuracy by adopting a grid with the incorrect value of [α/Fe] if the metallicity [Fe/H] of the target is adjusted to match the Z in the fitting grid. In the centers of dense star clusters, close encounters between stars and compact objects are likely to occur. We studied tidal disruption events of main-sequence (MS) stars by stellar-mass black holes (termed μTDEs), which can shed light on the processes occurring in these clusters, including being an avenue in the mass growth of stellar-mass BHs. Using the moving-mesh hydrodynamics code AREPO, we performed a suite of 58 hydrodynamics simulations of partial μTDEs of realistic, MESA-generated MS stars by varying the initial mass of the star (0.5 M⊙ and 1 M⊙), the age of the star (zero-age, middle-age and terminal-age), the mass of the black hole (10 M⊙ and 40 M⊙), and the impact parameter (yielding almost no mass loss to full disruption). We then examined the dependence of the masses, spins, and orbital parameters of the partially disrupted remnant on the initial encounter parameters. We find that the mass lost from a star decreases roughly exponentially with increasing approach distance and that a 1 M⊙ star loses less mass than a 0.5 M⊙ one. Moreover, a more evolved star is less susceptible to mass loss. Tidal torques at the closest approach spin up the remnant very close to break-up velocity when the impact parameter is low. The remnant star can be bound (eccentric) or unbound (hyperbolic) to the black hole; hyperbolic orbits occur when the star's central density concentration is relatively low and the black-hole-star mass ratio is high, which is the case for the disruption of a 0.5 M⊙ star. Finally, we provide best-fit analytical formulae for the aforementioned range of parameters that can be incorporated into cluster codes to model star-black-hole interaction more accurately. Context. The Li abundance observed in pre-main sequence and main sequence late-type stars is strongly age-dependent, but also shows a complex pattern depending on several parameters, such as rotation, chromospheric activity, and metallicity. The best way to calibrate these effects, and with the aim of studying Li as an age indicator for FGK stars, is to calibrate coeval groups of stars, such as open clusters (OCs) and associations. Aims. We present a considerable target sample of 42 OCs and associations – with an age range from 1 Myr to 5 Gyr – observed within the Gaia-ESO survey (GES), and using the latest data provided by GES iDR6 and the most recent release of Gaia that was then available, EDR3. As part of this study, we update and improve the membership analysis for all 20 OCs presented in our previous article. Methods. We perform detailed membership analyses for all target clusters to identify likely candidates, using all available parameters provided by GES, complemented with detailed bibliographical searches, and based on numerous criteria: from radial velocity distributions, to the astrometry (proper motions and parallaxes) and photometry provided by Gaia, to gravity indicators (log g and the γ index), [Fe/H] metallicity, and Li content in diagrams of (Li equivalent widths) EW(Li) versus Teff. Results. We obtain updated lists of cluster members for the whole target sample, as well as a selection of Li-rich giant contaminants obtained as an additional result of the membership process. Each selection of cluster candidates was thoroughly contrasted with numerous existing membership studies using data from Gaia to ensure the most robust results. Conclusions. These final cluster selections will be used in the third and last paper of this series, which reports the results of a comparative study characterising the observable Li dispersion in each cluster and analysing its dependence on several parameters, allowing us to calibrate a Li–age relation and obtain a series of empirical Li envelopes for key ages in our sample. The black hole-and-galaxy (BH-galaxy) co-evolution paradigm predicts a phase where most of the star formation (SF) and BH accretion takes place in gas-rich environments, namely, in what are likely to be very obscured conditions. In the first phase of this growth, some of the galactic gas is funnelled toward the centre of the galaxy and is accreted into the supermassive BH, triggering active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity. The large quantity of gas and dust hides the emission and the AGN appears as an obscured (type 2) AGN. The degree of obscuration in type 2 AGNs may even reach values as high as NH > 1024 cm−2 (i.e., Compton-thick, CT). Population synthesis models of the X-ray background (XRB) suggest that a large population of CT-AGN is, in fact, needed to explain the still unresolved XRB emission at energy above 20 keV. In this work, we investigated the properties of 94 [Ne V]3426 Å-selected type 2 AGN in COSMOS at z = 0.6 − 1.2, performing optical-to-far-infrared (FIR) spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting of COSMOS2020 photometric data to estimate the AGN bolometric luminosity and stellar mass, star formation rate, age of the oldest stars, and molecular gas mass for their host-galaxy. In addition, we performed an X-ray spectral analysis of the 36 X-ray-detected sources to obtain reliable values of the AGN obscuration and intrinsic luminosity, as well as to constrain the AGN properties of the X-ray-undetected sources. We found that more than two-thirds of our sample is composed of very obscured sources (NH > 1023 cm−2), with about 20% of the sources being candidate CT-AGN and half being AGNs in a strong phase of accretion (λEdd > 0.1). We built a mass- and redshift-matched control sample and its comparison with the [Ne V] sample indicates that the latter has a higher fraction of sources within the main sequence of star-forming galaxies and shows little evidence for AGNs quenching the SF. As the two samples have similar amounts of cold gas available to fuel the SF, this difference points towards a higher efficiency in forming stars in the [Ne V]-selected sample. The comparison with the prediction from the in situ co-evolution model suggests that [Ne V] is an effective tool for selecting galaxies in the obscured growth phase of the BH-galaxy co-evolution paradigm. We find that the "quenching phase" is still to come for most of the sample and only few galaxies show evidence of quenched SF activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

New high-precision photometric measurements of the V957 Cep system ( , , , B6 V+B8 V), as well as an integrated approach to determining orbital parameters based both on photometric solutions of the light curves and the study of the course of residual deviations of the minima timings from the linear formula made it possible for the first time to accurately measure the apsidal motion rate: /year, which coincided with the theoretical value under the condition of the orbital and axial rotation synchronism: /year. The physical parameters of the component stars were obtained: K, , , K, M2 = 3.0 ± , . This set of parameters corresponds to stars of zero age, recently descended to ZAMS. We use the SAMI Galaxy Survey to examine the drivers of galaxy spin, |$\lambda _{R_{\rm e}}$|⁠ , in a multidimensional parameter space including stellar mass, stellar population age (or specific star formation rate), and various environmental metrics (local density, halo mass, satellite versus central). Using a partial correlation analysis, we consistently find that age or specific star formation rate is the primary parameter correlating with spin. Light-weighted age and specific star formation rate are more strongly correlated with spin than mass-weighted age. In fact, across our sample, once the relation between light-weighted age and spin is accounted for, there is no significant residual correlation between spin and mass, or spin and environment. This result is strongly suggestive that the present-day environment only indirectly influences spin, via the removal of gas and star formation quenching. That is, environment affects age, then age affects spin. Older galaxies then have lower spin, either due to stars being born dynamically hotter at high redshift, or due to secular heating. Our results appear to rule out environmentally dependent dynamical heating (e.g. galaxy–galaxy interactions) being important, at least within 1  R e where our kinematic measurements are made. The picture is more complex when we only consider high-mass galaxies (M * ≳ 1011 M⊙). While the age-spin relation is still strong for these high-mass galaxies, there is a residual environmental trend with central galaxies preferentially having lower spin, compared to satellites of the same age and mass. Aims. In this study, we analyse the magnetic field properties of a set of 15 global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of solar-type star dynamos conducted using the ASH code. Our objective is to enhance our understanding of these properties by comparing theoretical results to current observations, and to finally provide fresh insights into the field. Methods. We analysed the rotational and magnetic properties as a function of various stellar parameters (mass, age, and rotation rate) in a 'Sun in time' approach in our extended set of 3D MHD simulations. To facilitate direct comparisons with stellar magnetism observations using various Zeeman-effect techniques, we decomposed the numerical data into vectorial spherical harmonics. Results.A comparison of the trends we find in our simulations set reveals a promising overall agreement with the observational context of stellar magnetism, enabling us to suggest a plausible scenario for the magneto-rotational evolution of solar-type stars. In particular, we find that the magnetic field may reach a minimum amplitude at a transition value of the Rossby number near unity. This may have important consequences on the long-term evolution of solar-type stars, by impacting the relation between stellar age, rotation, and magnetism. Stellar chemical abundances have proved themselves a key source of information for understanding the evolution of the Milky Way, and the scale of major stellar surveys such as GALAH have massively increased the amount of chemical data available. However, progress is hampered by the level of precision in chemical abundance data as well as the visualization methods for comparing the multidimensional outputs of chemical evolution models to stellar abundance data. Machine learning methods have greatly improved the former; while the application of tree-building or phylogenetic methods borrowed from biology are beginning to show promise with the latter. Here, we analyse a sample of GALAH solar twins to address these issues. We apply The Cannon algorithm to generate a catalogue of about 40 000 solar twins with 14 high precision abundances which we use to perform a phylogenetic analysis on a selection of stars that have two different ranges of eccentricities. From our analyses, we are able to find a group with mostly stars on circular orbits and some old stars with eccentric orbits whose age–[Y/Mg] relation agrees remarkably well with the chemical clocks published by previous high precision abundance studies. Standard models of structure formation allow us to predict the cosmic timescales relevant for the onset of star formation and the assembly history of galaxies at high redshifts (z > 10). The strength of the Balmer break represents a well-known diagnostic of the age and star formation history of galaxies, which enables us to compare observations with contemporary simulations – thus shedding light on the predictive power of our current models of star formation in the early Universe. Here, we measure the Balmer break strength for 23 spectroscopically confirmed galaxies at redshifts 6 ≲ z ≲ 12 using public JWST NIRSpec data from the cycle 1 GO 1433 and GO 2282 programmes (PI Coe), as well as public spectroscopic data from the JWST Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES). We find that the range of observed Balmer break strengths agree well with that of current simulations given our measurement uncertainties. No cases of anomalously strong Balmer breaks are detected, and therefore no severe departures from the predictions of contemporary models of star formation. However, there are indications of a number of outliers in the observed distribution which have weaker Balmer breaks than predicted by simulations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The most accurate parameters of star clusters are determined by analyzing colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) constructed from their member stars. The recent study applying this method to the analysis of the Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury (PHAT) survey star clusters includes objects up to ages of 300 Myr. In this study, we aim to extend a sample of star clusters with parameters determined based on CMDs of individual stars to older ages, up to ~700 Myr. We have developed an isochrone fitting procedure for CMDs of resolved and semi-resolved clusters to determine their parameters. The Bayesian approach is employed in determining star cluster ages and interstellar extinctions. We determined ages and extinctions for a sample of 854 star clusters from the M31 PHAT survey. We found that the star formation rate in the M31 galaxy was rather constant during the last ~130 Myr; however, a strong cluster formation episode occurred ~220 Myr ago, and can be attributed to the predicted passage of the M32 galaxy through the Andromeda’s disk. We present a new method of predicting the ages of galaxies using a machine learning (ML) algorithm with the goal of providing an alternative to traditional methods. We aim to match the ability of traditional models to predict the ages of galaxies by training an artificial neural network (ANN) to recognize the relationships between the equivalent widths of spectral indices and the mass-weighted ages of galaxies estimated by the magphys model in data release 3 (DR3) of the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey. We discuss the optimization of our hyperparameters extensively and investigate the application of a custom loss function to reduce the influence of errors in our input data. To quantify the quality of our predictions we calculate the mean squared error (MSE), mean absolute error (MAE) and R 2 score for which we find MSE = 0.020, MAE = 0.108 and R 2 = 0.530. We find our predicted ages have a similar distribution with standard deviation σ p  = 0.182 compared with the GAMA true ages σ t  = 0.207. This is achieved in approximately 23 s to train our ANN on an 11th Gen Intel Core i9-11900H running at 2.50 GHz using 32 GB of RAM. We report our results for when light-weighted ages are used to train the ANN, which improves the accuracy of the predictions. Finally, we detail an evaluation of our method relating to physical properties and compare with other ML techniques to encourage future applications of ML techniques in astronomy. Determining the precise ages of young (tens to a few hundred Myr) kinematic ('moving') groups is important for placing star, protoplanetary disc, and planet observations on an evolutionary timeline. The nearby ∼25 Myr-old β Pictoris Moving Group (BPMG) is an important benchmark for studying stars and planetary systems at the end of the primordial disc phase. Gaia DR3 astrometry and photometry, combined with ground-based observations and more sophisticated stellar models, permit a systematic re-evaluation of BPMG membership and age. We combined Gaia astrometry with previously published radial velocities to evaluate moving group membership in a Bayesian framework. To minimize the effect of unresolved stellar multiplicity on age estimates, we identified and excluded multistar systems using Gaia astrometry, ground-based adaptive optics imaging, and multi-epoch radial velocities, as well as literature identifications. We estimated age using isochrone and lithium-depletion-boundary fitting with models that account for the effect of magnetic activity and spots on young, rapidly rotating stars. We find that age estimates are highly model-dependent; Dartmouth magnetic models with ages of 23 ± 8 and 33 |$^{+9}_{-11}$| Myr provide best fits to the lithium depletion boundary and Gaia M G versus B P –R P colour–magnitude diagram, respectively, whereas a Dartmouth standard model with an age of 11 |$^{+4}_{-3}$| Myr provides a best fit to the 2-Micron All-Sky Survey- Gaia |$M_{K_S}$| versus B P– R P colour–magnitude diagram. The age estimates of magnetic stars obtained from the ages of clusters and associations are compared with those determined using the grids of evolutionary paths and isochrones separately for each star. Large deviations between the age systems have been discovered. Analysis of the studies that use "cluster" ages shows that they differ significantly from those obtained using individual estimates. Chemically peculiar (CP) stars of early spectral types are the only Main-Sequence objects of the Hertzsprung–Russel diagram that have strong magnetic fields covering the entire surface of a star and maintaining a stable structure on a scale of at least decades. The origin and evolution of magnetic fields of CP stars are still a subject of discussion, despite significant progress in the field of observation of stellar magnetic fields and their theoretical description. This situation has developed not least because of the problem of accurately determining the age of CP stars. We performed a review of magnetic fields of CP stars in the Orion OB1 association and five intermediate-age clusters ( Per, Pleiades, NGC 7092, and IC 4756) and found evidence of a strong decrease in the proportion and strength of magnetic fields of CP stars relative to normal stars of the same spectral types. The found dependences can serve as confirmation of the fossil nature of large-scale magnetic fields of stars. The conclusions of this paper are based on the measurements of more than 800 spectra obtained in the period from 2013 to 2023 with the Main Stellar Spectrograph of the 6-m BTA Telescope for about 100 stars. Solar-type stars form with a wide range of rotation rates Ω. A wide Ω range persists until a stellar age of t  ∼ 0.6 Gyr, after which solar-type stars exhibit Skumanich spin-down where Ω ∝  t −1/2. Rotational evolution models incorporating polytropic stellar winds struggle to simultaneously reproduce these two regimes, namely the initially wide Ω range and the Skumanich spin-down without imposing an a priori cap on the wind mass-loss rate. We show that a three-dimensional wind model driven by Alfvén waves and observational data yields wind torques that agree with the observed age distribution of Ω. In our models of the Sun and 27 open cluster stars aged from 0.04 to 0.6 Gyr that have observationally derived surface magnetic maps and rotation rates, we find evidence of exponential spin-down in young stars that are rapid rotators and Skumanich spin-down for slow rotators. The two spin-down regimes emerge naturally from our data-driven models. Our modelling suggests that the observed age distribution of stellar rotation rates Ω arises as a consequence of magnetic field strength saturation in rapid rotators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As the reconstruction of the star formation histories (SFHs) of galaxies from spectroscopic data becomes increasingly popular, we explore the best age resolution achievable with stellar population synthesis (SPS) models, relying on different constraints: broad-band colours, absorption indices, a combination of the two, and the full spectrum. We perform idealized experiments on SPS models and show that the minimum resolvable relative duration of a star formation episode (time difference between 10 per cent and 90 per cent of the stellar mass formed divided by the median age) is never better than 0.4, even when using spectra with signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) larger than 100 per Å. Typically, the best relative age resolution ranges between 0.4 and 0.7 over most of the age–metallicity plane, corresponding to minimum bin sizes for SFH sampling between 0.15 and 0.25 dex. This resolution makes the spectroscopic exploration of distant galaxies mandatory in order to reconstruct the early phases of galaxies' SFHs. We show that spectroscopy with |${\rm SNR} \gtrsim 20\,$|  Å−1 is essential for good age resolution. Remarkably, using the full spectrum does not prove significantly more effective than relying on absorption indices, especially at SNR ≲ 20 Å−1. We discuss the physical origins of the age resolution trends as a function of age and metallicity, and identify the presence of maxima in age resolution (i.e. minima in measurable relative time duration) at the characteristic ages that correspond to quick time variations in spectral absorption features. RR Lyrae are a well-known class of pulsating horizontal branch stars widely used as tracers of old, metal-poor stellar populations. However, mounting observational evidence shows that a significant fraction of these stars may be young and metal-rich. Here, through detailed binary stellar evolution modelling, we show that all such metal-rich RR Lyrae can be naturally produced through binary interactions. Binary companions of these RR Lyrae stars formed through binary interactions partly strip their progenitor's envelopes during a preceding red giant phase. As a result, stripped horizontal branch stars become bluer than their isolated stellar evolution counterparts and thus end up in the instability strip. In contrast, in the single evolution scenario, the stars can attain such colours only at large age and low metallicity. While binary-made RR Lyrae can possess any ages and metallicities, their Galactic population is relatively young (1 – |$9\, {\rm Gyr}$|⁠) and dominated by the thin disc and the bulge. We show that Galactic RR Lyrae from binary evolution are produced at rates compatible with the observed metal-rich population and have consistent G -band magnitudes, Galactic kinematics, and pulsation properties. Furthermore, these systems dominate the RR Lyrae population in the solar neighbourhood. We predict that all metal-rich RR Lyrae have an A, F, G, or K-type companion with a long orbital period (⁠|$P \gtrsim 1000\, {\rm d}$|⁠). Observationally characterizing the orbital periods and masses of such stellar companions will provide valuable new constraints on mass and angular momentum-loss efficiency for Sun-like accretors and the nature of RR Lyrae populations. The kinematics, mean α-elements, and ages of the stars reveal two distinct disc populations observed in the Solar neighbourhood. Although several studies have been carried out to characterize abundances of chemical elements and kinematic identifications in these populations, there are few studies that dealt with the analysis of stellar rotation and characteristics of populations focused on low-mass stars of the F and G types. In this work, we propose a new approach to classify stellar populations from the thin and thick disc for F and G dwarf stars by relating chemical abundance and rotation (v  sin  i) of these stars in the rotational–chemical–plane (v  sin  i –[α/Fe]–[Fe/H] plot). Our results show that the two rotational-chemical sequences disentangled, high- and low-[α/Fe] components, present properties (α-enhanced, ages, kinematics, space velocity gradients, local density ratio) closely linked to the stars of the chemically and kinematically defined as thin and thick disc components. This study has an impact on calibrations that relate ages to rotation (gyro-chronology) as well as age to chemical abundances (chemochronology), as well as sheds light on the understanding of the processes of Galactic disc formation. Observational studies are finding stars believed to be relics of the earliest stages of hierarchical mass assembly of the Milky Way (i.e. proto-galaxy). In this work, we contextualize these findings by studying the masses, ages, spatial distributions, morphology, kinematics, and chemical compositions of proto-galaxy populations from the 13 Milky Way (MW)-mass galaxies from the FIRE-2 cosmological zoom-in simulations. Our findings indicate that proto-Milky Way populations: (i) can have a stellar mass range between 1 × 108 < M⋆ < 2 × 1010 [M⊙], a virial mass range between 3 × 1010 < M⋆ < 6 × 1011 [M⊙], and be as young as 8 ≲ Age ≲ 12.8 [Gyr] (1 ≲ z ≲ 6); (ii) are pre-dominantly centrally concentrated, with |$\sim 50~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of the stars contained within 5–10 kpc; (iii) on average show weak but systematic net rotation in the plane of the host's disc at z  = 0 (i.e. 0.25 ≲ 〈κ/κdisc〉 ≲ 0.8); (iv) present [α/Fe]-[Fe/H] compositions that overlap with the metal-poor tail of the host's old disc; and (v) tend to assemble slightly earlier in Local Group-like environments than in systems in isolation. Interestingly, we find that |$\sim 60~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of the proto-Milky Way galaxies are comprised by 1 dominant system (1/5 ≲M⋆/M⋆, proto-MilkyWay≲ 4/5) and 4–5 lower mass systems (M⋆/M⋆, proto-MilkyWay≲ 1/10); the other |$\sim 40~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| are comprised by 2 dominant systems and 3–4 lower mass systems. These massive/dominant proto-Milky Way fragments can be distinguished from the lower mass ones in chemical-kinematic samples, but appear (qualitatively) indistinguishable from one another. The increasing size and complexity of data provided by both ongoing and planned galaxy surveys greatly contribute to our understanding of galaxy evolution. Deep learning methods are particularly well suited for handling the complex and massive data. We train a convolutional neural network (CNN) to simultaneously predict the stellar populations in galaxies: age, metallicity, colour excess E (B − V), and central velocity dispersion (VD) using spectra with redshift ≤ 0.3 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. This is the first time to use spectra based on deep learning to derive the four galaxy properties. The testing results show that our CNN predictions of galaxy properties are in good consistent with values by the traditional stellar population synthesis method with little scatters (0.11 dex for age and metallicity, 0.018 mag for E (B − V), and 31 km s−1 for VD). In terms of the computational time, our method reduces by more than 10 times compared to traditional method. We further evaluate the performance of our CNN prediction model using spectra with different signal-to-noise ratios (S/Ns), redshifts, and spectral classes. We find that our model generally exhibits good performance, although the errors at different S/Ns, redshifts, and spectral classes vary slightly. We present an optical and X-ray study of the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) NGC 5474 X-1. The X-ray spectrum taken during the bright state of the source (L X ∼ 2 × 1040 erg s–1) shows signatures of a broad absorption line at ≃ 8 keV, which may be a cyclotron resonant scattering feature. This implies that this system may host a neutron star with a magnetic field of ∼1012 G. The first observation of this area with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), carried out 14 months later, revealed that the source was bright in the optical range as well. Subsequent observations have shown that the source faded in both ranges (more than 2.8 mag in the U band and by a factor of 50–100 in the X-ray) and has never become bright again. Deeper HST observations made it possible to impose constraints on the donor star spectral class and mass (⁠|$\lt \, 7$| M⊙), as well as to identify a stellar cluster of about 1 Gyr, the centre of which is located at a projected distance of ~2 pc from NGC 5474 X-1. The ULX could be a member of this old cluster; however, the presence of stars with ages of ∼10 Myr within 300 pc of the ULX means that it is possible that this is just an accidental projection. The precise ascertainment of stellar ages is pivotal for astrophysical research into stellar characteristics and galactic dynamics. To address the prevalent challenges of suboptimal accuracy in stellar age determination and limited proficiency in apprehending nonlinear dynamics, this study introduces an enhanced model for stellar age determination, amalgamating the Feedforward Neural Network (FFNN) with TabNet (termed FFNN–TabNet). The methodology commences with the acquisition of a stellar dataset via meticulous cross-matching. Subsequent advancements encompass refinements to the activation functions within TabNet, coupled with augmentations to the Attentive transformer module by incorporating an FFNN module. These enhancements substantially boost training efficiency and precision in age estimation while amplifying the model's capability to decode complex nonlinear interactions. Leveraging Bayesian Optimization Algorithm (BOA) for hyperparameter fine-tuning further elevates the model's efficiency. Comprehensive ablation and comparative analyses validate the model's superior performance in stellar age determination, demonstrating marked enhancements in accuracy. This paper presents the third data release of the INvestigating Stellar Population In RElics (INSPIRE) project, comprising 52 ultra-compact massive galaxies (UCMGs) observed with the X-Shooter spectrograph. We measure integrated stellar velocity dispersion, [Mg/Fe] abundances, ages, and metallicities for all the INSPIRE objects. We thus infer star formation histories and confirm the existence of a degree of relicness (DoR), defined in terms of the fraction of stellar mass formed by z  = 2, the time at which a galaxy has assembled 75 per cent of its mass, and the final assembly time. Objects with a high DoR assembled their stellar mass at early epochs, while low-DoR objects show a non-negligible fraction of later formed populations and hence a spread in ages and metallicities. A higher DoR correlates with larger [Mg/Fe], supersolar metallicity, and larger velocity dispersion values. The 52 UMCGs span a large range of DoR from 0.83 to 0.06, with 38 of them having formed more than 75  per cent of their mass by z  = 2. Of these, nine are extreme relics (DoR>0.7), since they formed the totality (⁠|$\gt 99~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠) of their stellar mass by redshift z  = 2. The remaining 14 UCMGs cannot be considered relics, as they are characterized by more extended star formation histories. With INSPIRE  we built the first sizeable sample of relics outside the local Universe, up to z ∼ 0.4, increasing the number of confirmed relics by a factor of >10, and opening up an important window to explain the mass assembly of massive galaxies in the high- z Universe. We present the integrated VLT-MUSE spectrum of the central 2 × 2 arcmin2 (30 × 30 pc2) of NGC 2070, the dominant giant H  ii region of the Tarantula Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud, together with an empirical far-ultraviolet spectrum constructed via LMC template stars from the ULLYSES survey and Hubble Tarantula Treasury Project UV photometry. NGC 2070 provides a unique opportunity to compare results from individual stellar populations (e.g. VLT FLAMES Tarantula Survey) in a metal-poor starburst region to the integrated results from the population synthesis tools Starburst99, Charlot & Bruzual, and BPASS. The metallicity of NGC 2070 inferred from standard nebular strong line calibrations is ∼0.4 ± 0.1 dex lower than obtained from direct methods. The Hα inferred age of 4.2 Myr from Starburst99 is close to the median age of OB stars within the region, although individual stars span a broad range of 1–7 Myr. The inferred stellar mass is close to that obtained for the rich star cluster R136 within NGC 2070, although this contributes only 21 per cent to the integrated far-UV continuum. He  ii λ1640 emission is dominated by classical WR stars and main sequence WNh + Of/WN stars. Around 18 per cent of the NGC 2070 far UV continuum flux arises from very massive stars with ≥100 M⊙, including several very luminous Of supergiants. None of the predicted population synthesis models at low metallicities are able to successfully reproduce the far-UV spectrum of NGC 2070. We attribute issues to the treatment of mass-loss in very massive stars, the lack of contemporary empirical metal-poor templates, plus WR stars produced via binary evolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study the kinematics of stars both at their formation and today within 14 Milky Way (MW)-mass galaxies from the FIRE-2 cosmological zoom-in simulations. We quantify the relative importance of cosmological disc settling and post-formation dynamical heating. We identify three eras: a Pre-Disc Era (typically ≳ 8 Gyr ago), when stars formed on dispersion-dominated orbits; an Early-Disc Era (≈8–4 Gyr ago), when stars started to form on rotation-dominated orbits but with high velocity dispersion, σform; and a Late-Disc Era (≲ 4 Gyr ago), when stars formed with low σform. σform increased with time during the Pre-Disc Era, peaking ≈8 Gyr ago, then decreased throughout the Early-Disc Era as the disc settled and remained low throughout the Late-Disc Era. By contrast, the dispersion measured today, σnow, increases monotonically with age because of stronger post-formation heating for Pre-Disc stars. Importantly, most of σnow was in place at formation, not added post-formation, for stars younger than ≈10 Gyr. We compare the evolution of the three velocity components: at all times, σR, form > σϕ, form > σZ, form. Post-formation heating primarily increased σR at ages ≲ 4 Gyr but acted nearly isotropically for older stars. The kinematics of young stars in FIRE-2 broadly agree with the range observed across the MW, M31, M33, and PHANGS-MUSE galaxies. The lookback time that the disc began to settle correlates with its dynamical state today: earlier-settling galaxies currently form colder discs. Phase-space data, chemistry, and ages together reveal a complex structure in the outer low-α disc of the Milky Way. The age-vertical velocity dispersion profiles beyond the Solar Neighbourhood show a jump at 6 Gyr for stars beyond the Galactic plane. Stars older than 6 Gyr are significantly hotter than younger stars. The chemistry and age histograms reveal a bump at [Fe/H] = −0.5, [α/Fe] = 0.1, and an age of 7.2 Gyr in the outer disc. Finally, viewing the stars beyond 13.5 kpc in the age-metallicity plane reveals a faint streak just below this bump, towards lower metallicities at the same age. Given the uncertainty in age, we believe these features are linked and suggest a pericentric passage of a massive satellite ∼6 Gyr ago that heated pre-existing stars, and led to a starburst in existing gas. New stars also formed from the metal-poorer infalling gas. The impulse approximation was used to characterize the interaction with a satellite, finding a mass of ∼1011 M⊙, and a pericentric position between 12 and 16 kpc. The evidence points to an interaction with the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy, likely its first pericentric passage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
