Abstract

To determine sex and maturity stages accurately without any physical injury and stress, especially for sensitive and high‐value fish species, employing a noninvasive ultrasound imaging technique could be a desirable approach. The ultrasound imaging method as a powerful eco‐friendly tool was established to determine sex, gonad volume, gonadosomatic index (GSI), and reproductive stages in the Indian shad, hilsa (Tenualosa ilisha). About 30 hilsa (15 males and 15 females) of different maturity stages were collected from the river Ganga round the year using gill nets. The ultrasound sonography (USG) was then employed in hilsa to determine the computed GSI. The fresh gonad volume of hilsa was determined using a water displacement method to ascertain actual GSI values. There was no significant difference between the calculated, real, and actual GSIs (P > 0.05) in both males and females. The validation of the precise maturity stages of ultrasound images of the gonad by the histological architecture indicated that USG images of the hilsa gonad depicted exact stages of maturity in both sexes except for stages I and II in males. The sex of the fish was accurately ascertained using ovarian ultrasound scanning for all the specimens. The calculated USG‐based ovarian volume was positively correlated (R2 = 0.97) with the actual and real ovarian volumes. The noninvasive and reliable ultrasonography technique was found to be an accurate and valid tool to track gender and gonadal development and predict the spawning periodicity in hilsa. Abstract

The primary productivity of the river River Kharashrota (Orissa) has been analysed both spatially and seasonally. The maximum GPP was noted during summer season and minimum in rainy season at all the six stations. The annual average GPP varied from 0.075±0.009 gC.m-3.h-1 to 0.938±0.103 gC.m-3.h-1.The NPP value varied from 0.012±0.001 gC.m-3.h-1 to 0.832±0.081 gC.m-3.h-1 and exhibited an increasing trend from the month of September to February. The community respiration (CR) ranged from 0.026±0.002 gC.m-3.h-1 to 0.496±0.043 gC.m-3.h-1 and exhibited a systematic seasonal pattern with maximum and minimum value during summer and winter respectively at all the stations. The correlation of NPP, GPP and CR with some of the physico-chemical parameters has also been established.

Abstract

The water budgets for some aquaculture systems in three states viz. Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and West Bengal were determined in the present study. The average evaporation and seepage loss from the aquaculture ponds throughout the year in Cuttack, Kendrapara, Jajpur, and Puri districts of Orissa were 164±8.3 and 73±16.5 cm, respectively; 152±10 and 90 ±16 cm, respectively, in South and North 24 Paraganas, West Bengal; and 182±12 and 110± 10 cm, respectively, in Krishna and West Godavari districts of Andhra Pradesh. Evaporation and seepage were significantly (P<0.05) different between the fish ponds of the three states. Annual rainfall, run-off, and well water addition to the ponds were 178± 40, 14.5±3.4, and 156±48 cm, respectively, in Orissa; 166±14, 9±2, and 173±27 cm, respectively, in West Bengal; 120±12, 8 ±1, and 304±26 cm, respectively, in Andhra Pradesh. Annual rainfall, run-off, and well water addition to the ponds differed significantly (P<0.05) in the three states. The consumptive water use was 3.34±0.47, 3.35±0.36, and 2.67±0.23 m3/kg, respectively, in Orissa, West Bengal, and Andhra Pradesh. A significantly (P<0.05) greater consumptive water use was determined for the fish ponds of West Bengal and Orissa compared to Andhra Pradesh. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
