Context: The hip adductor and abductor muscles play vital roles as stabilizers in the lower-extremity. Their activation during soccer-specific actions is essential, but local muscular fatigue can hinder athletic performance and increase the risk of injury. Design: This study aimed to observe the variations in frontal plane hip strength in female college soccer players before and after a high-workload soccer-specific training session. Furthermore, the study sought to compare the relative changes in hip strength with the internal and external load measures obtained during that session. Methods: Twenty female college soccer players participated in a retrospective observational study. Isometric hip adductor and abductor strength were measured before and after a training session in the college spring season. Measurements were taken with a handheld dynamometer (MicroFET 2) while the players were supine. Global positioning system sensors (Catapult Vector S7), commonly worn by players during training sessions and competitive matches, were used to measure external and internal loads. Statistical analyses were performed using paired samples t test to assess hip adductor and abductor strength changes before and after the training session. Spearman rank was used to identify correlation coefficients between global positioning system data and isometric hip strength. Results: The findings revealed significant decreases in the strength of the right hip adduction (P =.012, −7% relative change), right abduction (P =.009, −7.6% relative change), and left abduction (P =.016, −4.9% relative change) after the training session. Furthermore, relative decreases in hip isometric adduction and abduction strength are related to the distance covered at high speeds. Conclusion: The results of this study highlight that hip isometric adduction and abduction strength tend to decrease after exposure to high workloads during soccer-specific training. Altering baseball pitching mechanics affects both performance and the risk of injury. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships of shoulder external over internal rotation ratio (SEIR) and other shoulder rotational properties during physical exam and biomechanics of pitching for 177 collegiate baseball pitchers. The shoulder range of motion was quantitatively measured using a custom-made wireless device. Pitching motion data were collected at 240 Hz, and a custom program was created to calculate the throwing arm motion and loading during baseball pitching. Linear regression and analysis of variance tests were performed to investigate the relationships between the shoulder physical exam outcomes and throwing arm biomechanics. SEIR had significant correlations with shoulder horizontal adduction angle at foot contact, maximum shoulder external rotation angle, maximum shoulder linear velocity, and elbow angle at ball release. SEIR groups had significant differences in shoulder proximal force, adduction torque, internal rotation torque, and horizontal adduction torque, and in elbow medial force and varus torque. Glenohumeral internal rotation deficit and total rotational motion deficit had no relationships with throwing arm motions or joint loadings. Individuals with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) and flat feet are more likely to experience increased pain and cartilage damage. This study aimed to investigate the knee kinetics, kinematics, pain, and physical function in individuals with moderate symptomatic KOA, in comparison to asymptomatic control participants. Thirty volunteers with moderate KOA (with flat feet n = 15, with normal feet n = 15) and 30 asymptomatic people (with flat feet n = 15, with normal feet n = 15) were evaluated. The knee adduction angular impulse, knee flexion moment, knee flexion angular impulse, and knee flexion angle were measured during level walking. The pain was assessed in patients with KOA. The study found that individuals with KOA had a significant increase in the knee adduction angular impulse compared with the asymptomatic people (P <.05). The KOA with flat feet group had significantly lower knee flexion moment, knee flexion angular impulse, and knee flexion angle values than the KOA with normal feet group (P <.05). Furthermore, the KOA with flat feet group had a higher pain score than the KOA with normal feet group. Individuals with osteoarthritis and flat feet had lower knee flexion moments which may indicate reduced knee force exerted through compensatory mechanisms. Despite this reduction, they reported significantly higher levels of pain compared with those without flat feet, a finding that warrants further investigation in future studies. Context: Piriformis syndrome is often associated with muscle spasms and shortening of the piriformis muscle (PM). Physical therapy, including static stretching of the PM, is one of the treatments for this syndrome. However, the effective stretching position ofthe PM is unclear in vivo. This study aimed to determine the effective stretching positions of the PM using ultrasonic shear wave elastography. Design: Observational study. Methods: Twenty-one healthy young men (22.7 [2.41 y) participated in this study. The shear elastic modulus of the PM was measured at 12 stretching positions using shear wave elastography. Three of the 12 positions were tested with maximum internal rotation at 0°, 20°, or 40° hip adduction in 90° hip flexion. Nine of the 12 positions were tested with maximum external rotation at positions combined with 3 hip-flexion angles (70°, 90°, and 110°) and 3 hip-adduction angles (0°, 20°, and 40°). Results.' The shear elastic modulus of the PM was significantly higher in the order of 40°, 20°, and 0° of adduction and higher in external rotation than in internal rotation. The shear elastic modulus of the PM was significantly greater in combined 110° hip flexion and 40° adduction with maximum external rotation than in all other positions. The purpose of this study was to compare the preliminary effects of movement pattern training (MoveTrain) versus strengthening/flexibility (standard) treatment on hip and pelvic biomechanics in patients with chronic hip-related groin pain. This is a secondary analysis of data collected during a pilot randomized clinical trial. Thirty patients with hip pain, between the ages of 15 and 40 years, were randomized to MoveTrain or standard. Both groups completed 10 treatment sessions over 12 weeks along with a daily home exercise program. Three-dimensional motion analysis was used to collect kinematic and kinetic data of the pelvis and hip during a single-leg squat task at pretreatment and immediately posttreatment. Compared with the standard group, the MoveTrain group demonstrated smaller hip adduction angles (P =.006) and smaller hip external adduction moments (P =.008) at posttreatment. The desired changes to hip joint biomechanics, as found in this study, may require specificity in training that could allow health care professionals to better customize the rehabilitation of patients with hip pain. These findings can also be applied to the design and implementation of future clinical trials to strengthen our understanding of the long-term implications of different rehabilitation techniques for patients with hip pain. Prior studies have explored the relationship between knee valgus and musculoskeletal variables to formulate injury prevention programs, primarily for females. Nonetheless, there is insufficient evidence pertaining to professional male soccer players. Here, the aim was to test the correlation of lateral trunk inclination, hip adduction, hip internal rotation, ankle dorsiflexion range of motion, and hip isometric strength with knee valgus during the single-leg vertical jump test. Twenty-four professional male soccer players performed a single-leg vertical hop test, hip strength assessments, and an ankle dorsiflexion range of motion test. A motion analysis system was employed for kinematic analysis. Maximal isometric hip strength and ankle dorsiflexion range of motion were tested using a handheld dynamometer and a digital inclinometer, respectively. The correlation of peak knee valgus with peak lateral trunk inclination was.43 during the landing phase (P =.04) and with peak hip internal rotation was −.68 (P <.001). For knee valgus angular displacement, only peak lateral trunk inclination presented a moderate positive correlation (r =.40, P =.05). This study showed that trunk and hip kinematics are associated with knee valgus, which could consequently lead to increased knee overload in male professional soccer players following a unilateral vertical landing test. Clinical Scenario: Injuries that affect the groin region are among the most common in football players. To prevent this condition, studies have focused on strengthening the adductors, hip flexors, or abdominal muscles. Recent investigations have used an eccentric-biased exercise (Copenhagen Adduction Exercise [CAE]) that promotes functional and architectural adaptations in the muscle tissue, though its effect on injury risk reduction is unknown. Clinical Question: Can the Copenhagen Adduction Exercise prevent groin injuries in soccer players? Summary of Key Findings: The literature was searched for studies investigating the potential groin injury risk reduction effect of the CAE. (1) Three studies met the inclusion criteria and were used for this appraisal; (2) one study observed a significantly lower injury rate ratio favoring the group that used the CAE program; and (3) 2 studies found similar or higher injury rates in the intervention groups, not supporting the inclusion of the CAE as a preventative tool. Clinical Bottom Line: There is conflicting evidence that usage of the CAE is superior to not performing adductor strengthening exercises in mitigating the risk of sustaining groin injuries. Given the evidence supporting these findings, it is advisable to exercise caution when contemplating the incorporation of the CAE into training regimens aimed at preventing groin injuries. Context: Posterior shoulder tightness evaluated as limited glenohumeral internal rotation and horizontal adduction is a risk factor for throwing-related shoulder and elbow injuries. Given that the throwing motion uses the entire body kinematics, limited lower-limb flexibility might be associated with posterior shoulder tightness. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the relationships between posterior shoulder tightness and lower-limb flexibility in college baseball players. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: University laboratory. Participants: Twenty-two college baseball players (20 right-handed and 2 left-handed). Methods: To investigate the relationships between glenohumeral range of motion and lower-limb flexibility using simple linear regression analysis, we measured passive range of motion of glenohumeral internal rotation and horizontal adduction, hip internal/external rotation in the prone/sitting position, ankle dorsiflexion, and quadriceps and hamstrings flexibility from both shoulders and legs. Results: Our analysis indicated that decreases in the lead leg hip external rotation in the prone position were moderately associated with limitations in glenohumeral internal rotation (R2 =.250, β [95% confidence interval, CI] = 0.500 [0.149 to 1.392], P =.018) and horizontal adduction (R2 =.200, β [95% CI] = 0.447 [0.051 to 1.499], P =.019) on the throwing shoulder. Furthermore, there were significant moderate relationships between decreases in glenohumeral internal rotation and limited lead leg quadriceps flexibility (R2 =.189, β [95% CI] = 0.435 [0.019 to 1.137], P =.022), and between decreases in glenohumeral horizontal adduction and limited stance leg ankle dorsiflexion (R2 =.243, β [95% CI] = 0.493 [0.139 to 1.438], P =.010). Conclusion: College baseball players with limited lower-limb flexibilities including the lead leg hip external rotation in the prone position, the lead leg quadriceps flexibility, and the stance leg ankle dorsiflexion showed excessive posterior shoulder tightness. Purpose Methods Results Conclusions Level of Evidence Different methods for quantifying joint‐line obliquity (JLO) have been described, including joint‐line obliquity angle (JLOA), Mikulicz joint‐line angle (MJLA) and medial proximal tibial angle (MPTA). The goal of the present study was to quantify the variation of JLOA based on the position of the hip. The hypothesis of our study is that JLO is significantly influenced by the abduction/adduction of the limb, unlike MJLA.One hundred long‐leg‐weightbearing X‐rays were used. At time 0 and after 30 days, two observers performed different measurements, including (1) distance between pubic symphysis and center of the femoral head, (2) distance between center of the femoral head and center of the ankle joint, (3) distance between center of the ankle and medial malleolus, (4) hip‐knee‐ankle angle, (5) MPTA, (6) lateral distal femoral angle, (7) joint‐line congruency angle, (8) JLOA, (9) MJL and (10) angle between Mikulicz line and line perpendicular to the ground. The changes of the JLOA based on the position of the hip (abducted, neutral, bipedal stance adduction and monopodal stance adduction) were calculated with trigonometric formulas and with simulation on an orthopaedic planning digital software.The JLOA change between adducted and abducted positions was on average 12.8° (SD 0.9 mm). The MJL did not vary significantly based on hip position.The adduction/abduction of the lower limb has a considerable impact on JLOA. A novel fixation system for a hand‐held dynamometer (HHD) was designed to enable isometric muscle measurements on various muscle groups of strong, healthy individuals in a field setting. The objective of this study was to evaluate the intra‐ and interrater reliability of the system and determine its suitability for use by multiple researchers within large‐scale data collections during field activities. Four researchers tested eight healthy subjects, who each completed eight different maximal isometric muscle strength assessments using the HHD fixation system. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) results were evaluated with a 95% confidence interval. ICC results for interrater reliability demonstrated excellent agreement of all eight measurements tested. ICC results for intrarater reliability demonstrated excellent agreement for six out of eight measurements. This system provides a new opportunity for several different high‐quality maximal muscle strength measurements to be collected by multiple data collectors on large numbers of strong, healthy individuals in a field setting. Purpose: High body mass index (BMI) is a strong predictor of posttraumatic osteoarthritis (OA) after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). Altered gait mechanics are independently affected by BMI and ACLR, and influence OA risk. Yet, evidence directly assessing the impact of high BMI on gait or cartilage characteristics after ACLR are limited. Here, we evaluated if high BMI moderates associations between gait and trochlear cartilage structure in individuals with ACLR. Methods: Treadmill walking biomechanics were evaluated in 40 normal BMI and 24 high BMI participants with ACLR at self-selected speeds. Normalized and absolute peak and cumulative loads (i.e., impulse) were extracted for peak knee flexion and adduction moments (KFM, KAM) and vertical ground reaction force (GRF).Medial and lateral femoral cartilage thickness and medial/lateral thickness ratios were assessed via ultrasound. Results: Those with ACLR and high BMI walked with reduced normalized peak vertical GRFs, and greater absolute peak and cumulative loads compared with normal BMI individuals with ACLR. Those with ACLR and high BMI also exhibited thinner cartilage and greater medial/lateral ratios in ACLR limbs compared with contralateral limbs whereas norma lBMI individuals with ACLR exhibited thicker ACLR limb cartilage. Lastly, greater peak KAM and KAM cumulative load were associated with thicker lateral cartilage and lesser medial/lateral thickness ratios, but only in the high BMI group. Conclusions: We observed those with high BMI after ACLR exhibited trochlear cartilage structural alterations not observed in normal BMI patients, whereas differential associations between loading outcomes and cartilage thickness in ACLR knees were observed between groups. The study objective is to test general- and sport-specific adaption during a single training on the Flexibility Trainer. The device is designed to trigger residual muscle tone decreases of the hip-joint muscles by providing (nearly) isokinetic resistance during a full range of motion strength training in adduction/abduction and flexion/extension direction. Static hip flexion and abduction as well as kinematics of double side kicks were analysed on 15 participants before and after training (or rest for controls) to assess general flexibility and sport-specific movement range. Tests were recorded by a Vicon® motion capturing system. Static hip flexion and abduction as well as leg vector spreading angles (VSA) at different nodes of the kick were selected to determine adaptions of active and passive flexibility. Normalised hip joint moments, movement velocities and VSA were calculated to evaluate the training with the device. ANOVAs with 4-repeated measures and Friedman tests were performed to identify time differences and Bonferroni post-hoc test to identify between-subject effects. Significant differences were found for both static flexibility tests (Flexion = 13.65%; Abduction = 9.94%) and the VSA at specific action phases (≤15.15%). Results indicate that short-term adaptions when training with the Flexibility Trainer are exceeding comparable literature showing improved flexibility and sport-specific performance. Purpose: Depending on its axis, pronation varies from the radius rotation around the steady ulna to the reciprocal adduction of the radius and abduction of the ulna. While there is no question that pronator teres is a central pronation agonist, anconeus's role is not settled. The current investigation comparing palpation and ultrasonography in these two muscles during pronation along the axis capitulum-second digit evolved from a serendipitous finding in a clinical anatomy seminar. Methods: Single-hand palpation and two-transducer ultrasonography over anconeus and pronator teres were used on ten normal subjects to investigate their contraction during pronation around the capitulum-second digit axis. These studies were done independently and blind to the results of the other. The statistical analysis between palpation and ultrasonography was performed with Cohen's kappa coefficient and the χ2 test. Results: On palpation, on resisted full pronation, anconeus contracted in 8/10 subjects and pronator teres in 10/10 subjects. Without resistance, the corresponding ratios were 5/10 and 9/10. On two-transducer ultrasonography, the comparable ratios were 7/10 and 10/10, and 3/10 and 10/10. A fair concordance (Cohen's kappa = 0.21) between palpation and ultrasonography in detecting the simultaneous status of anconeus and pronator teres during resisted full pronation. Anatomic dissection illustrated the elements involved. Conclusions: Plain palpation confirmed by ultrasonography showed the simultaneous contraction of anconeus and pronator teres during resisted pronation in most of the studied subjects. Intraoperative stem anteversion, which is the angle between the lower leg axis and the trial-stem axis with hip flexion and adduction, is generally evaluated by the surgeon's visual estimation during total hip arthroplasty (THA). However, the conventional approach can be influenced by knee osteoarthritis or uncertain surgeon's observation point. Therefore, we developed a new method for measuring the stem anteversion angle in the neutral hip position using an original rod attached to the trial-stem perpendicular to the long axis and parallel to the stem neck. This study aimed to assess the accuracy of our method in comparison with the conventional method of measuring intraoperative stem anteversion angle. We measured the intraoperative stem anteversion angle in consecutive 106 hips of 106 patients who underwent cementless primary THA with a tapered wedge stem. Absolute error in the stem anteversion angle was expressed as the difference between intraoperative (common vs. neutral hip positions) and postoperative computed tomography measurements, i.e., true stem anteversion. Additionally, we investigated the factors affecting these errors. The absolute error of measurement was significantly smaller in the neutral hip position than in the common position (3.0° ± 2.5° vs. 8.0° ± 3.9°; p < 0.0001). The factor associated with the error was advanced knee osteoarthritis in the common position, whereas it was not statistically significant in the neutral hip position. The aim of this review was to evaluate the efficiency of using ankle foot orthosis (AFO) on the loads applied on the knee joint in the subjects with knee osteoarthritis (OA) based on available literature. A search was done in some data bases including Medline, PubMed, Cochrane central register of controlled trial (CCTR), Embase, and ISI web of knowledge. The key words selected by national library of medicine were selected in this study. Those included Ankle foot orthosis (AFO) in combination with knee osteoarthritis (OA). Based on the aforementioned key words, 25 papers were selected. Based on abstracts and titles, 9 papers were finalized. AFO reduces knee adduction moment, which is more than lateral wedge. Moreover, AFO is more comfortable than other interventions. Although use of AFO reduces knee adduction moment, its effect on pain and functional performance is still controversial. BACKGROUND: Lower trapezius (LT) plays an important role in maintaining the stability of the scapula. Sufficient activation of LT can reduce the risk of rotator cuff tear and shoulder impingement syndrome. The Y-raise exercise has been recommended for effective LT activation. However, the upper trapezius (UT) can be co-activated during universal Y-raise exercise. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the activity of the UT, LT, and serratus anterior (SA) during Y-raise exercise with and without isometric adduction (IAD) using Thera-Band. METHODS: 21 healthy males voluntarily participated in the study. The participants were asked to perform Y-raise exercise with and without IAD using Thera-Band. Surface electromyography was used to measure the muscle activity of UT, LT, and SA during Y-raise exercise with and without IAD. Paired t-test was used to analyze the significance of the muscle activity of UT, LT, and SA as well as the activity ratio of LT/UT and LT/SA. The significance level was set at α = 0.05. RESULTS: Compared with Y-raise exercise without IAD, the muscle activity of UT and SA decreased (p = 0.001 and p = 0.003, respectively), whereas that of LT increased (p = 0.038) during Y-raise exercise with IAD. Additionally, the activity ratio of LT/UT and LT/SA was greater during Y-raise exercise with IAD (p = 0.001 and p = 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION: Y-raise exercise with IAD using Thera-Band is recommended as an efficient exercise to selectively activate the LT and increase the activity ratio of LT/UT and LT/SA. Boots are widely used by many people for various purposes, but their impact on gait biomechanics and injury risk is not well understood. This study investigated the effects of boots on walking biomechanics, compared to casual footwear. The lower limb joint kinematics and kinetics of 20 healthy male participants aged 20 to 30 years old were compared during self-paced walking with boots and shoes. The results showed that walking with boots is associated with greater hip extensor (P = 0.009) and ankle dorsiflexor (P < 0.001) moments in early stance, hip power generation (P < 0.001) and knee power absorption (P < 0.001) in early swing phase, hip abductor (P < 0.001) and knee adduction (P < 0.001) moments in the entire stance, net concentric work for the hip joint in sagittal (13.9%, P = 0.001) and frontal (21.7%, P = 0.002) planes. In contrast, the subtalar supinator moment in the entire stance (P < 0.001), ankle angular velocity in late stance (P < 0.001), and net concentric (− 42.7%, P < 0.001) and eccentric (− 44.6%, P = 0.004) works of subtalar joint were significantly lower in the boot condition. The compensatory adjustments in the hip and knee joints may result from ankle restrictions. While boots may aid those with ankle disorders, lower limb loading and the risk of musculoskeletal injuries and osteoarthritis could be increased. This study offers new perspectives on the biomechanical impact of boots on gait, potential prevention and treatment strategies of related injuries, and advancing footwear design. Muscle torque generators (MTGs) have been developed as an alternative to muscle-force models, reducing the muscle-force model complexity to a single torque at the joint. Current MTGs can only be applied to single Degree-of-freedom (DoF) joints, leading to complications in modeling joints with multiple-DoFs such as the shoulder. This study aimed to develop an MTG model that accounts for the coupling between 2-DoF at the shoulder joint: shoulder plane of elevation (horizontal abduction/adduction) and shoulder elevation (flexion/extension). Three different 2-DoF MTG equations were developed to model the coupling between these two movements. Net joint torques at the shoulder were determined for 20 participants (10 females and 10 males) in isometric, isokinetic, and passive tests. Curve and surface polynomial fitting were used to find the best general fit for the experimental data in terms of the different degrees of coupling. The models were validated against experimental isokinetic torque data. It was determined that implicit coupling that used interpolation between single-DoF MTGs resulted in the lowest root-mean-square percent error of 8.5%. Knee joint contact forces are commonly estimated via surrogate measures (i.e., external knee adduction moments or musculoskeletal modeling). Despite its capabilities, modeling is not optimal for clinicians or persons with limited experience. The purpose of this study was to design a novel prediction method for knee joint contact forces that is simplistic in terms of required inputs. This study included marker trajectories and instrumented knee forces during normal walking from the “Grand Challenge” (n = 6) and “CAMS” (n = 2) datasets. Inverse kinematics were used to derive stance phase hip (sagittal, frontal, transverse), knee (sagittal, frontal), ankle (sagittal), and trunk (frontal) kinematics. A long-short term memory network (LSTM) was created using matlab to predict medial and lateral knee force waveforms using combinations of the kinematics. The Grand Challenge and CAMS datasets trained and tested the network, respectively. Musculoskeletal modeling forces were derived using static optimization and joint reaction tools in OpenSim. Waveform accuracy was determined as the proportion of variance and root-mean-square error between network predictions and in vivo data. The LSTM network was highly accurate for medial forces (R² = 0.77, RMSE = 0.27 BW) and required only frontal hip and knee and sagittal hip and ankle kinematics. Modeled medial force predictions were excellent (R² = 0.77, RMSE = 0.33 BW). Lateral force predictions were poor for both methods (LSTM R² = 0.18, RMSE = 0.08 BW; modeling R² = 0.21, RMSE = 0.54 BW). The designed LSTM network outperformed most reports of musculoskeletal modeling, including those reached in this study, revealing knee joint forces can accurately be predicted by using only kinematic input variables. Background: Residual forefoot adduction deformity refers to the persistent inward deviation of the forefoot in patients following corrective procedures for idiopathic clubfoot, with reported incidence rates varying up to 95%. The aim of this work was to evaluate the clinical and radiological results of combined cuboid-cuneiform osteotomy for correcting the residual forefoot adduction deformity of idiopathic clubfoot patients. Methods: Eighteen cases (feet) in 13 children with residual forefoot adduction deformity were treated between October 2022 and September 2023 at the Orthopedic Department of Zagazig University Hospital in Egypt. The children were followed up for at least six months, and all cases underwent a combined cuboid-cuneiform osteotomy with soft tissue releases. Measurements including the anterior talocalcaneal angle (TCA1), anterior talo-first metatarsal angle (TFMA1), calcaneo-fifth metatarsal angle (CFMA), lateral talocalcaneal angle (TCA2), and lateral talo-first metatarsal angle (TFMA2) were taken pre-operatively and post-operatively. Results: The residual forefoot adduction deformities were evaluated clinically and radiologically according to a scoring system modified by Bensahel et al. and supported by the International Clubfoot Society. Based on the total calculated score, the results were categorized into four levels: excellent, good, fair, and poor. Fifty percent of the treated feet had excellent results, 33% had good results, 11% had fair results, and 6% had poor results. Despite nonsignificant complications, 16 patients expressed satisfaction with the operation. Conclusion: Combined cuboid-cuneiform osteotomy is a safe and effective option for correcting residual forefoot adduction deformity in idiopathic clubfoot. Background: Step width is a spatial variable in the frontal plane, defined as the mediolateral distance between the heel (forefoot during sprinting) of bilateral feet at initial contact. Variations in step width may impact the lower limb biomechanics. This systematic review aimed to synthesize the published findings to determine the influence of acute changes in step width on locomotion biomechanics and provide implications for injury prevention and enhanced sports performance. Methods: Literature was identified, selected, and appraised in accordance with the methods of a systematic review. Four electronic databases (Web of Science, MEDLINE via PubMed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect) were searched up until May 2023 with the development of inclusion criteria based on the PICO model. Study quality was assessed using the Downs and Black checklist and the measured parameters were summarized. Results: Twenty-three articles and 399 participants were included in the systematic review. The average quality score of the 23 studies included was 9.39 (out of 14). Step width changed the kinematics and kinetics in the sagittal, frontal, and transverse planes of the lower limb, such as peak rearfoot eversion angle and moment, peak hip adduction angle and moment, knee flexion moment, peak knee internal rotation angle, as well as knee external rotation moment. Alteration of step width has the potential to change the stability and posture during locomotion, and evidence exists for the immediate biomechanical effects of variations in step width to alter proximal kinematics and cues to impact loading variables. Conclusion: Short-term changes in step width during walking, running, and sprinting influenced multiple lower extremity biomechanics. Narrower step width may result in poor balance and higher impact loading on the lower extremities during walking and running and may limit an athlete's sprint performance. Increasing step width may be beneficial for injury rehabilitation, i.e., for patients with patellofemoral pain syndrome, iliotibial band syndrome or tibial bone stress injury. Wider steps increase the supporting base and typically enhance balance control, which in turn could reduce the risks of falling during daily activities. The aim of the present study was to compare the coordination patterns and levels of coordination variability of healthy and injured runners with iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS). Sixty runners divided into four groups (15 healthy males, 15 healthy females, 15 males with ITBS and 15 females with ITBS) ran at a steady and freely chosen pace on an over-ground track, and their coordination patterns of the lower limbs were calculated during 10 running stances using the vector coding technique. Both male and female runners with ITBS showed a greater dominance of the pelvis segment and the anti—phase patterns in the frontal plane thigh—pelvis coupling (p = 0.001, η2 = 0.36). In addition, injured female runners showed a greater hip adduction dominance, whereas injured males presented a greater anti—phase pattern in the transverse plane—frontal plane hip coupling (p = 0.003, η2 = 0.08). The levels of coordination variability during running stance did not change between ITBS injured and healthy runners in any of the couplings. Currently injured runners with ITBS appeared to present altered coordination patterns on the hip couplings that were partly dependent on gender but did not lead to changes in the coordination variability levels. (1) This study examined the impact of fatigue and unanticipated factors on knee biomechanics during sidestep cutting and lateral shuffling in female basketball players, assessing the potential for non-contact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. (2) Twenty-four female basketball players underwent fatigue induction and unanticipated change of direction tests, and kinematic and kinetic parameters were collected before and after fatigue with a Vicon motion capture system and Kistler ground reaction force (GRF) sensor. (3) Analysis using two-way repeated-measures ANOVA showed no significant interaction between fatigue and unanticipated factors on joint kinematics and kinetics. Unanticipated conditions significantly increased the knee joint flexion and extension angle (p < 0.01), decreased the knee flexion moment under anticipated conditions, and increased the knee valgus moment after fatigue (p ≤ 0.05). One-dimensional statistical parametric mapping (SPM1d) results indicated significant differences in GRF during sidestep cutting and knee inversion and rotation moments during lateral shuffling post-fatigue. (4) Unanticipated factors had a greater impact on knee load patterns, raising ACL injury risk. Background and Aim: To date, little research is available that objectively quantifies female adolescent singing-voice characteristics in light of the physiological and functional developments that occur from puberty to adulthood. This exploratory study sought to augment the pool of data available that offers objective voice analysis of female singers in late adolescence. Methods: Using long-term average spectra (LTAS) and inverse filtering techniques, dynamic range and voice-source characteristics were determined in a cohort of vocally healthy cis-gender female adolescent singers (17 to 19 years) from high-school choirs in Aotearoa New Zealand. Non-parametric statistics were used to determine associations and significant differences. Results: Wide intersubject variation was seen between dynamic range, spectral measures of harmonic organisation (formant cluster prominence, FCP), noise components in the spectrum (high-frequency energy ratio, HFER), and the normalised amplitude quotient (NAQ) suggesting great variability in ability to control phonatory mechanisms such as subglottal pressure (Psub), glottal configuration and adduction, and vocal tract shaping. A strong association between the HFER and NAQ suggest that these non-invasive measures may offer complimentary insights into vocal function, specifically with regard to glottal adduction and turbulent noise in the voice signal. Conclusion: Knowledge of the range of variation within healthy adolescent singers is necessary for the development of effective and inclusive pedagogical practices, and for vocal-health professionals working with singers of this age. Many middle-aged and older adults participate in running to maintain their health and fitness; however, some have to stop running due to osteoarthritis-attributed knee pain. It was unclear whether gait biomechanics and knee physical findings differ between those who can and cannot run. What are the gait and knee physical findings of patients with knee osteoarthritis who remain capable of running in comparison to those who are not capable of running? This was a cross-sectional study, which recruited 23 patients over the age of 40 who had been diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis. Their knee joint ranges of motion and muscle strength, knee pain, and the maximum gait speed (walk as fast as possible) were measured. Knee alignment was calculated from X-ray images, and the knee joint extension angle and adduction moment during a self-selected gait speed were determined using motion analysis. Participants were divided into two groups—those able to run (n=11) and those unable to run (n=12). The measured and calculated outcomes were compared between groups, and logistic regression analyses of significantly different outcomes were performed. There were significant group differences in the maximum knee extension angle during stance phase (p = 0.027), maximum gait speed during the 10-m walk test (p = 0.014), knee pain during gait (p = 0.039) and medial proximal tibial angle by X-ray (p = 0.035). Logistic regression analyses revealed that the maximum knee extension angle during stance phase (OR: 1.44, 95%CI: 1.06¬1.94, p = 0.02) was a significant factor. The aim of the study was to verify the effects of foot progression angle (FPA) modification during walking on the internal moments of the ankle and knee joints in individuals with knee osteoarthritis (OA). Biomechanical changes such as increased knee adduction moment (KAM) during walking are known to be involved in the development and severity of knee OA. Although various FPA modifications during gait have been applied to reduce peak KAM, few studies have investigated the effects of applying toe-in or toe-out walking modifications for knee OA on peak KAM and three-dimensional (3D) moments of the ankle joint. Kinetic moment variables were acquired from 35 individuals with medial knee compartment OA. A 3D motion analysis system and two force platforms were used to acquire KAM and 3D moments of both ankle joints during gait. Visual3D was used to obtain final moment data for statistical processing. Repeated-measures analysis of variance with Bonferroni adjustment was used to compare kinetic and kinematic values for each FPA walking condition. There was a significant decrease (p < 0.01) in first peak KAM when walking with an internal rotation foot position compared to normal foot position walking. Also, there was a significant decrease (p < 0.01) in second peak KAM when walking with an external rotation foot position compared to normal foot position walking. Compared to a normal foot position, peak ankle inversion moment of the external rotation foot position walking showed a significant decrease (p < 0.05). There were no interactive effects between FPA condition and limb sides for any KAM values (p > 0.05). The results showed no significant increase in the ankle joint moment value during gait for FPA modification conditions. Glycans, carbohydrates, and glycoconjugates are involved in many crucial biological processes, such as disease development, immune responses, and cell–cell recognition. Glycans and carbohydrates are known for the large number of isomeric features associated with their structures, making analysis challenging compared with other biomolecules. Mass spectrometry has become the primary method of structural characterization for carbohydrates, glycans, and glycoconjugates. Metal adduction is especially important for the mass spectrometric analysis of carbohydrates and glycans. Metal‐ion adduction to carbohydrates and glycoconjugates affects ion formation and the three‐dimensional, gas‐phase structures. Herein, we discuss how metal‐ion adduction impacts ionization, ion mobility, ion activation and dissociation, and hydrogen/deuterium exchange for carbohydrates and glycoconjugates. We also compare the use of different metals for these various techniques and highlight the value in using metals as charge carriers for these analyses. Objective: The Posterior Standing Overhead Arm Reach (SOAR) test has been previously reported as a reliable clinical measure of closed chain hip extension motion. The proposed Medial SOAR test expands on that testing approach to provide a similar measure of functional hip adduction motion. This was a preliminary intrarater and interrater reliability and validity study of the Medial SOAR test as a measure of functional hip adduction. Design: Cross-sectional. Setting: University motion analysis laboratory. Participants: Fifty hips were assessed in 25 (22 female) asymptomatic participants (mean age = 23.4 years, SD = 0.8). Main measures: Maximum hip adduction during the Medial SOAR test was measured with a standard goniometer independently by two examiners. The test was also performed using three-dimensional motion capture. The intrarater and interrater reliability of the goniometric measure was determined using intraclass correlation coefficients, and the relationship between measures obtained via goniometry and three-dimensional motion capture was assessed with Pearson correlations and Bland–Altman analysis. Results: Intrarater reliability (ICC2,3) was 0.88 (95% CI = 0.80–0.92) for Examiner 1 and 0.87 (95% CI = 0.79–0.92) for Examiner 2. The standard error of measurement and minimal detectable change were less than 3.0°. Interrater reliability demonstrated an intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.62 (95% CI = 0.28–0.79). Pearson correlations were significant with low-to-moderate associations (r = 0.49, P < 0.001; r = 0.24, P = 0.045). Conclusions: Similar to the previously reported Posterior SOAR test, the Medial SOAR test demonstrated acceptable intrarater and interrater reliability, along with low-to-moderate associations with three-dimensional motion capture. Background/purpose Interventions including posterior glenohumeral mobilizations (PGM), sleeper stretches, and thoracic manipulation are commonly used to address posterior shoulder tightness. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of adding thoracic manipulation to PGM and sleeper stretches on passive range of motion (PROM), joint mobility, and infraspinatus electromyographic (EMG) activity in shoulders with decreased internal rotation (IR) PROM. Design Randomized Sequential Intervention Laboratory Study Methods Forty individuals with clinically significant IR loss attended two study sessions. Participants were randomized to receive five 30 seconds bouts of either grade III PGM or sleeper stretching. Following a seven-day washout period, all participants attended a second session and received a prescriptive supine HVLA manipulation targeting the T3-4 segment, followed by the previously randomized intervention. Outcome measures included internal rotation PROM, horizontal adduction PROM, posterior glenohumeral joint translation assessed via ultrasound imaging, and EMG activity of the infraspinatus during a PGM. All outcome measures were assessed pre- and immediately post-intervention and compared statistically. Results There were significant within-group, but not between-group, differences for IR and horizontal adduction PROM following a single session of PGM or sleeper stretch. When combined with thoracic manipulation, significantly smaller within session changes of IR PROM were observed for both PGM (mean difference 4.4, p=0.017) and sleeper stretches (mean difference 6.4, p=0.0005). There were no significant between group differences for horizontal adduction PROM, humeral head translation, or EMG activity across all time points. Discussion Both GH posterior mobilizations and sleeper stretches improved IR and horizontal adduction PROM in a single session. Purpose: To develop and validate the Brazilian Adductor Performance Test (BAPT) for predicting hip adductor muscle injuries in elite soccer athletes. Methods: A total of 108 soccer athletes were assessed, followed up for 3 months, and evaluated for a history of adductor injury 6 months before BAPT evaluation. The Shapiro–Wilk test was used as the normality test. The Mann–Whitney U test was used to compare BAPT scores between injured and uninjured athletes. Binary logistic regression was performed to identify the athletes' chances of injury based on their BAPT scores. A receiver operating characteristic curve was used to determine the cutoff point for the number of repetitions in the BAPT and Spearman bivariate correlation and identify factors potentially related to the test score. Furthermore, the intraclass correlation coefficient was used to determine interexaminer agreement. The level of significance was set at 95%. Results: The BAPT scores for hip adductor injury history did not differ significantly (P =.08). A significant deficit was identified in the BAPT scores of the injured athletes at the 3-month follow-up (P =.001). The cutoff point identified was 33 repetitions. Low BAPT scores increased the chance of injury by 20% (odds ratio, 1.20%; P =.001). The interexaminer agreement was.96 (P =.001). Anterior cruciate ligament injury prevention should focus primarily on reduction of the knee abduction moment (KAM) in landing tasks. Gluteus medius and hamstring forces are considered to decrease KAM during landing. The effects of different muscle stimulations on KAM reduction were compared using 2 electrode sizes (standard 38 cm2 and half size 19 cm2) during a landing task. Twelve young healthy female adults (22.3 [3.6] y, 1.62 [0.02] m, 50.2 [4.7] kg) were recruited. KAM was calculated under 3 conditions of muscle stimulation (gluteus medius, biceps femoris, and both gluteus medius, and biceps femoris) using 2 electrode sizes, respectively versus no stimulation during a landing task. A repeated-measures analysis of variance determined that KAM differed significantly among stimulation conditions and post hoc analysis revealed that KAM was significantly decreased in conditions of stimulating either the gluteus medius (P <.001) or the biceps femoris (P <.001) with the standard electrode size, and condition of stimulating both gluteus medius and biceps femoris with half-size electrode (P =.012) when compared with the control condition. Hip strength has been shown to influence the incidence of injury in women’s football. The first objective of our study was to examine the differences in isometric strength of the adductors and abductors between two test positions (0° vs. 45° hip angle). Our second objective was to verify the sensitivity of the two test positions in discriminating between women footballers with and without a history of groin pain in the last twelve months. One hundred and one elite players from the Slovenian women’s football league were tested. The isometric strength of the adductors, abductors, and the ratio between hip abductor and adductor strength in two different test positions were assessed. We found statistically significant differences (p < 0.05; effect size range 0.12–0.13) between the two test positions in hip adduction, abduction strength, and abductor/adductor strength ratio. The ROC analysis showed that only the abductor/adductor strength ratio at the 0° hip angle position can differentiate between players with and without a history of groin pain, with an optimal cut-off point of ≤ 1.01 (p < 0.05; AUC = 0.734). In conservative treatment for proximal humerus fractures (PHFs), the immobilization position of the affected arm should not be determined uniformly. The aim of this study is to investigate the optimal immobilization position for conservative treatment of different types of PHFs. We hypothesized that the optimal position minimizing the deforming force in PHFs depends on the fracture components involved. PHF models involving either the surgical neck (SN) or greater tuberosity (GT) were created using 12 fresh-frozen cadaveric shoulders. In the SN model, the deforming forces on the pectoralis major muscle were measured in full adduction by increasing external rotation. In the GT model, the deforming force of the supraspinatus muscle was measured in neutral rotation by decreasing abduction, and the deforming force of the infraspinatus muscle was measured in full adduction by increasing internal rotation, respectively. In the SN model, the deforming force of the pectoralis major muscle increased significantly with external rotation from full internal rotation to neutral rotation (P = 0.006), indicating that the arm should be placed in full internal rotation. In the GT model, the deforming force of the supraspinatus muscle increased significantly with adduction from 45° of abduction to full adduction (P = 0.006); the deforming force of the infraspinatus muscle increased significantly with internal rotation from neutral rotation to full internal rotation (P = 0.006). These findings should be considered when placing the arm in abduction and neutral rotation so as to minimize the deforming force by either the supra or infraspinatus muscle. This study aimed to determine the absolute and relative reliability of concentric and eccentric flexion, extension, horizontal abduction, and adduction movements of the shoulder using a functional electromechanical dynamometer (FEMD). Forty-three active male university students (23.51 ± 4.72 years) were examined for concentric and eccentric strength of shoulder flexion, extension, horizontal abduction, and horizontal adduction with an isokinetic test at 0.80 m·s−1. Relative reliability was determined by intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) with 95% confidence intervals. Absolute reliability was quantified by the standard error of measurement (SEM) and coefficient of variation (CV). Reliability was very high to extremely high for all movements on concentric and eccentric strength measurements (ICC: 0.76–0.94, SEM: 0.63–6.57%, CV: 9.40–19.63%). The results of this study provide compelling evidence for the absolute and relative reliability of concentric and eccentric flexion, extension, horizontal abduction, and horizontal adduction shoulder isokinetic strength tests in asymptomatic adults. There is increasing interest from evolutionary biologists in the evolution of avian bill shape, how the bill is used during feeding and, in particular, the bite forces the bill can deliver. Bite force exhibits isometry with the total mass of the jaw musculature, but there is variation in the functional categories of the jaw muscles in different avian taxa. Qualitative descriptions of the jaw musculature do not allow analysis of the relative contributions that adductor or retractor muscles play in generating a bite force. This study is a meta-analysis of published data for body mass and the mass of the jaw musculature in 66 bird species from 10 orders. The masses of the different muscles contributing to adduction and retraction in closing the jaw, and to depression and protraction in opening the jaw, were summed and allometric relationships explored before investigating the effects of taxonomic order on these relationships. The categories of muscles, and the masses of each category of jaw musculature varied among avian orders. Some species, such as the flightless ratites, had relatively small jaw muscle mass but parrots had an additional adductor muscle. Phylogenetically controlled relationships between body mass and the mass of each muscle category irrespective of taxonomic order were isometric. However, analysis of covariance revealed significant interactions between body mass and taxonomic order. Most orders had low values for body-mass-specific muscle masses in the jaw with the notable exceptions of the Passeriformes (songbirds) and Psittaciformes (parrots). The values of these orders were 3–4 times greater, although the relative amounts of muscles contributing to adduction and retraction were similar in Psittaciformes, but adduction was markedly higher in Passeriformes. The results of these analyses highlight the lack of species-specific data for most birds, which is adversely impacting our understanding of the anatomical features that are determining the functional properties of the bill during feeding. Osteoarthritis (OA) pain management options are currently limited. Fasinumab, an anti‐nerve growth factor monoclonal antibody, has been investigated in healthy volunteers and patients with OA‐related pain, among other conditions. Data from 12 Phase I‐III clinical trials of 92 healthy volunteers and 7430 patients with OA were used to develop a population pharmacokinetic model to characterize fasinumab concentration‐time profiles and assess the covariates' effect on fasinumab pharmacokinetic parameters. Participants received single or repeated fasinumab doses intravenously (IV)/subcutaneously (SC), based on body weight (0.03‐1 mg/kg IV or 0.1‐0.3 mg/kg SC)/fixed dose (9‐12 mg IV or 1‐12 mg SC). Fasinumab concentration‐time data following IV and SC administration in healthy volunteers and patients with OA‐related pain were adequately described by a 2‐compartment model. Bioavailability increased with higher doses; estimated at 55.1% with 1 mg SC dose, increasing in a greater‐than‐proportional manner above this. Body weight had the largest predicted impact on fasinumab steady‐state exposures, participants at the 5th and 95th percentiles had a 43%‐45% higher/22%‐23% lower exposure versus reference, respectively. The aim of our study was to compare the force steadiness and the discharge characteristics of motor units in the tibialis anterior (TA) during ankle dorsiflexion and foot adduction produced by submaximal isometric contractions with the dominant and non-dominant foot. Fifteen young men performed maximal and submaximal contractions at five target forces with both legs, and motor unit activity in TA was recorded using high-density electromyography. Maximal force and the fluctuations in force during submaximal contractions were similar between the two legs (p > 0.05). Motor unit activity was characterized by measures of mean discharge rate (MDR), coefficient of variation for interspike interval (CoV for ISI), and standard deviation of the filtered cumulative spike train (SD of fCST). There were no statistically significant differences in motor unit activity between legs during ankle dorsiflexion. In contrast, the MDR and the CoV for ISI but not the SD of fCST, were greater for the non-dominant foot compared with the dominant foot during foot adduction. Nonetheless, these differences in motor unit activity were not sufficient to influence the force fluctuations during the submaximal contractions. Analyzing gait in corridors, rather than in lab, provides unique advantages for a more comprehensive understanding of human locomotion. However, limited dedicated technologies constrain gait data analysis in this context. In this study, a markerless gait analysis system using an Azure Kinect sensor mounted on a mobile robot is proposed and validated as a potential solution for gait analysis in corridors. Ten healthy participants (4 males and 6 females) underwent two tests. The first test (5 trials per participant) took place in the laboratory. Here, Azure Kinect performance was validated against a Vicon system, assessing eight gait signals and 22 gait parameters. The second test (2 trials per participant) was performed in the corridors over a 32‐m walking distance to compare this gait pattern with the one developed within the laboratory. The intrasession Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) reliability for in‐lab experiments was assessed by calculating the ICC between gait cycles captured in each session per participant. Notably, knee flexion/extension (ICC‐0.95), hip flexion/extension (ICC‐0.96), pelvis rotation (ICC‐0.88), and interankle distance (ICC‐0.98) demonstrated excellent reliability with high confidence. Similarly, hip adduction/abduction showed good reliability (ICC‐0.79), while trunk rotation exhibited moderate reliability (ICC‐0.72). In contrast, both trunk tilt (ICC‐0.24) and pelvis tilt (ICC‐0.41) consistently displayed lower reliability. This was observed for both the Vicon and the Azure systems, highlighting the intricate nature of capturing precise data for these specific signals in both systems. Validity outcomes indicated comparable error rates to literature standards (12.68° $12.68^\circ $ knee flexion/extension, 5.54° $5.54^\circ $ hip flexion/extension, and 3.45° $3.45^\circ $ hip adduction/abduction), with 11 parameters having no significant differences from Vicon. Comparison of in‐lab and in‐corridor experiments show that individuals exhibit significantly longer stride time (1.10 s vs. 1.05 s), lower pelvis tilt (6.83° $6.83^\circ $ vs. 9.39° $9.39^\circ $), and lower minimum pelvis rotation (−5.82° $-5.82^\circ $ vs. −14.61° $-14.61^\circ $) when walking in the laboratory. Introduction: The aim of the study was to compare maximal force, force steadiness, and the discharge characteristics of motor units in the tibialis anterior (TA) muscle during submaximal isometric contractions for ankle dorsiflexion and adduction of the foot. Methods: Nineteen active young adults performed maximal and submaximal isometric dorsiflexion and adduction contractions at five target forces (5%, 10%, 20%, 40%, and 60% maximal voluntary contraction [MVC]). The activity of motor units in TA was recorded by high-density EMG. Results: The maximal force was similar between dorsiflexion and adduction, despite EMG amplitude for TA being greater (P < 0.05) during dorsiflexion than adduction. The coefficient of variation (CV) for force (force steadiness) during dorsiflexion was always less (P < 0.05) than during adduction, except of 5% MVC force. No differences were observed for mean discharge rate; however, the regression between the changes in discharge rate relative to the change of force was significant for dorsiflexion (R² = 0.25, P < 0.05) but not for adduction. Discharge variability, however, was usually less during dorsiflexion. The CV for interspike interval was less (P < 0.05) at 10%, 20%, and 40% MVC but greater at 60% MVC during dorsiflexion than adduction. Similarly, the SD values of the filtered cumulative spike train of the motor units in TA were less (P < 0.05) at 5%, 10%, 20%, and 40% MVC during dorsiflexion than adduction. Conclusions: Although the mean discharge rate of motor units in TA was similar during foot adduction and ankle dorsiflexion, discharge variability was less during dorsiflexion resulting in less accurate performance of the steady adduction contractions. Background: Historically, kinematic measures have been compared across injured and non-injured groups of runners, failing to take into account variability in kinematic patterns that exist independent of injury, and resulting in false positives. Research led by gait patterns and not pre-defined injury status is called for, to better understand running-related injury (RRI) aetiology and within- and between-group variability. Objectives: Synthesise evidence for the existence of distinct kinematic sub-groups across a population of injured and healthy runners and assess between-group variability in kinematics, demographics and injury incidence. Data Sources: Electronic database search: PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (Wiley), Embase, OVID, Scopus. Eligibility Criteria: Original, peer-reviewed, research articles, published from database start to August 2022 and limited to English language were searched for quantitative and mixed-methods full-text studies that clustered injured runners according to kinematic variables. Results: Five studies (n = 690) were included in the review. All studies detected the presence of distinct kinematic sub-groups of runners through cluster analysis. Sub-groups were defined by multiple differences in hip, knee and foot kinematics. Sex, step rate and running speed also varied significantly between groups. Random injury dispersal across sub-groups suggests no strong evidence for an association between kinematic sub-groups and injury type or location. Conclusion: Sub-groups containing homogeneous gait patterns exist across healthy and injured populations of runners. It is likely that a single injury may be represented by multiple movement patterns, and therefore kinematics may not predict injury risk. Although changes in the gait biomechanics during pregnancy are known to occur, it is unclear whether they return to their original state after childbirth. The objective of the current systematic review is to summarize existing literature reporting the biomechanical characteristics of gait in postpartum women and to identify knowledge gaps that calls for future investigations in this population. Relevant articles were selected using MEDLINE (PubMed), Scopus (Elsevier), Embase (Elsevier), and Web of Science (Clarivate Analytics). Articles were included if they met the following criteria: They must (1) include postpartum women, (2) report measures related to three-dimensional (3D) kinematics and/or kinetics, (3) have been published after 1990, and (4) have been published in English. The current systematic review included a total of 14 articles, five of which compare the data from postpartum women with nulliparous women or pre-pregnancy data. We observed that gait biomechanics changes of postpartum women could persist for more than 5 years after the childbirth. In patients with medial knee osteoarthritis (OA), medial meniscus extrusion during gait is aggravated by mechanical stress, such as knee adduction moment (KAM). Conversely, the decrease in the range of knee rotation during stance phase is also one of the important issues in early knee OA, whereas the correlation between medial meniscus extrusion and knee rotation during gait are unclear. To investigate the correlation between increase in medial meniscus extrusion and range of knee rotation during gait in patients with early- and late-stage of knee OA. Forty patients with medial knee OA were enrolled and divided into early- and late-OA group by Kellgren-Lawrence grading scale. During gait tasks, the extent of medial meniscus extrusion was measured using ultrasonography and kinetic/kinematic data were measured using three-dimensional motion analysis system. The correlation between medial meniscus extrusion and the range of knee rotation or KAM were evaluated in the overall, early-, and late- OA groups. A significant negative correlation was observed between an increase in medial meniscus extrusion and range of knee rotation angle in early-OA group only. However, an increase in medial meniscus extrusion significantly correlated with the second KAM peak in the overall and early-OA groups. Postmortem human eyes were subjected to optic nerve (ON) traction in adduction and elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) to investigate scleral surface deformations. We incrementally adducted 11 eyes (age 74.1 ± 9.3 years, standard deviation) from 26° to 32° under normal IOP, during imaging of the posterior globe, for analysis by three-dimensional digital image correlation (3D-DIC). In the same eyes, we performed uniaxial tensile testing in multiple regions of the sclera, ON, and ON sheath. Based on individual measurements, we analyzed eye-specific finite element models (FEMs) simulating adduction and IOP loading. Analysis of 3D-DIC showed that the nasal sclera up to 1 mm from the sheath border was significantly compressed during adduction. IOP elevation from 15 to 30 mmHg induced strains less than did adduction. Tensile testing demonstrated ON sheath stiffening above 3.4% strain, which was incorporated in FEMs of adduction tethering that was quantitatively consistent with changes in scleral deformation from 3D-DIC. Simulated IOP elevation to 30 mmHg did not induce scleral surface strains outside the ON sheath. ON tethering in incremental adduction from 26° to 32° compressed the nasal and stretched the temporal sclera adjacent to the ON sheath, more so than IOP elevation. Background: This study analysed changes in gait and pedobarography and subjective and functional outcomes after isolated Chopart joint injury. Methods: The results of 14 patients were reviewed. Kinematic 3D gait analysis, comparative bilateral electromyography (EMG) and pedobarography were performed. Results: On the injured side, the 3D gait analysis showed a significantly increased internal rotation and decreased external rotation of the hip and significantly decreased adduction and decreased range of motion (ROM) for the ankle. On the healthy side, the pedobarography revealed a significantly increased mean force in the forefoot, an increased peak maximum force and an increased maximum pressure in the metatarsal. When standing, significantly more weight was placed on the healthy side. The EMG measurements showed no significant differences between the healthy and injured legs. The objective of the present review is to list, describe, compare, and critically analyze the main procedures developed in the last 20 years for the analysis of digested alkylated peptides, resulting from the adduction of albumin by different mustard agents, and that can be used as biomarkers of exposure to these chemical agents. While many biomarkers of sulfur mustard, its analogues, and nitrogen mustards can easily be collected in urine such as their hydrolysis products, albumin adducts require blood or plasma collection to be analyzed. Nonetheless, albumin adducts offer a wider period of detectability in human exposed patients than urine found biomarkers with detection up to 25 days after exposure to the chemical agent. The detection of these digested alkylated peptides of adducted albumin constitutes unambiguous proof of exposure. However, their determination, especially when they are present at very low concentration levels, can be very difficult due to the complexity of the biological matrices. Therefore, numerous sample preparation procedures to extract albumin and to recover alkylated peptides after a digestion step using enzymes have been proposed prior to the analysis of the targeted peptides by liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry method with or without derivatization step. This review describes and compares the numerous procedures including a number of different steps for the extraction and purification of adducted albumin and its digested peptides described in the literature to achieve detection limits for biological samples exposed to sulfur mustard, its analogues, and nitrogen mustards in the ng/mL range. Walking and running at different speeds are common in daily life. This study investigated 6 degrees of freedom (DOF) kinematics of normal knees of Chinese during walking and running. Forty healthy participants were investigated in 4 conditions: comfortable walking, normal walking, slow running and ordinary running. The range of motion (ROM) and peak values in 6 DOF kinematics were analysed. As the speed increased, a general increase in flexion, lateral and proximal translations occurred. Significant increases of ROM in flexion/extension, axial rotation and medial/lateral translations were observed. The ROM of adduction/abduction, anterior/posterior and proximal/distal translations were greatest during normal walking. The maximum and minimum flexion/extension, maximum internal rotation and tibial lateral translations increased with the increase of speed. The maximum and minimum tibial proximal translations in running were found being greater than walking. A phenomenon between walking and running was observed: both tibial proximal/distal and medial/lateral translations increased when changed from walking to running. Non-linear transition exists in 6 DOF kinematics during walking to running. Discoveries in this study may have potential clinical values to serve as references of normal walking and running in the management of knee injury and knee rehabilitation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Unanticipated trunk perturbation is commonly observed when anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries occur during direction-changing manoeuvres. This study aimed to quantify the effect of mid-flight medial-lateral external trunk perturbation directions/locations on ACL loading variables during sidestep cuttings. Thirty-two recreational athletes performed sidestep cuttings under combinations of three perturbation directions (no-perturbation, ipsilateral-perturbation, and contralateral-perturbation relative to the cutting leg) and two perturbation locations (upper-trunk versus lower-trunk). The pushing perturbation was created by customised devices releasing a slam ball to contact participants near maximum jump height prior to cutting. Perturbation generally resulted in greater peak vertical ground reaction force and slower cutting velocity. Upper-trunk contralateral perturbation showed the greatest lateral trunk bending away from the travel direction, greatest peak knee flexion and abduction angles, and greatest peak internal knee adduction moments compared to other conditions. Such increased ACL loading variables were likely due to the increased lateral trunk bending and whole-body horizontal velocity away from the cutting direction caused by the contralateral perturbation act at the upper trunk. Details of the anatomy and behavior of the structures responsible for human eye movements have been extensively elaborated since the first modern biomechanical models were introduced. Based on these findings, a finite element model of human ocular adduction is developed based on connective anatomy and measured optic nerve (ON) properties, as well as active contractility of bilaminar extraocular muscles (EOMs), but incorporating the novel feature that globe translation is not otherwise constrained so that realistic kinematics can be simulated. Anatomy of the hemisymmetric model is defined by magnetic resonance imaging. The globe is modeled as suspended by anatomically realistic connective tissues, orbital fat, and contiguous ON. The model incorporates a material subroutine that implements active EOM contraction based on fiber twitch characteristics. Starting from the initial condition of 26° adduction, the medial rectus (MR) muscle was commanded to contract as the lateral rectus (LR) relaxed. We alternatively modeled absence or presence of orbital fat. During pursuit-like adduction from 26 to 32°, the globe translated 0.52 mm posteriorly and 0.1 mm medially with orbital fat present, but 1.2 mm posteriorly and 0.1 mm medially without fat. Maximum principal strains in the optic disk and peripapillary reached 0.05–0.06, and von-Mises stress 96 kPa. Tension in the MR orbital layer was ~ 24 g-force after 6° adduction, but only ~ 3 gm-f in the whole LR. This physiologically plausible simulation of EOM activation in an anatomically realistic globe suspensory system demonstrates that orbital connective tissues and fat are integral to the biomechanics of adduction, including loading by the ON.
