We report the discovery of five galaxy candidates at redshifts between $15.9

JWST/MIRI images have been used to study the Fourier transform power spectra (PS) of two spiral galaxies, NGC 628 and NGC 5236, and two dwarfs, NGC 4449 and NGC 5068, at distances ranging from 4 to 10 Mpc. The PS slopes on scales larger than 200 pc range from -0.6 at 21 microns to -1.2 at 5.6 microns, suggesting a scaling of region luminosity with size as a power law with index ranging from 2.6 to 3.2, respectively. This result is consistent with the size-luminosity relation of star-forming regions found elsewhere, but extending here to larger scales. There is no evidence for a kink or steepening of the PS at some transition from two-dimensional to three-dimensional turbulence on the scale of the disk thickness. This lack of a kink could be from large positional variations in the PS depending on two opposite effects: local bright sources that make the slope shallower and exponential galaxy profiles that make the slope steeper. The sources could also be confined to a layer of molecular clouds that is thinner than the HI or cool dust layers where PS kinks have been observed before. If the star formation layers observed in the near-infrared here are too thin, then the PS kink could be hidden in the broad tail of the JWST point spread function., Comment: 12 pages, 32 figures

We investigate the nature of star formation in gas-rich galaxies at $z > 7$ forming in a markedly overdense region, in the whereabouts of a massive virialized halo already exceeding $10^{12}$ M$_{\odot}$. We find that not only the primary galaxy, but also the lower-mass companion galaxies rapidly develop massive self-gravitating compact gas disks, less than 500~pc in size, which undergo fragmentation by gravitational instability into very massive bound clumps. Star formation proceeds fast in the clumps, which quickly turn into compact star clusters with masses in the range $10^5$-$10^8$ M$_{\odot}$ and typical half-mass radii of a few pc, reaching characteristic densities above $10^5$ M$_{\odot}$ pc$^{-2}$. The properties of the clusters in the lowest-mass galaxy bear a striking resemblance to those recently discovered by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) in the lensed Cosmic Gems arc system at $z = 10.2$. We argue that, due to their extremely high stellar densities, intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) would form rapidly inside the clusters, which would then swiftly sink and merge on their way to the galactic nucleus, easily growing a $10^7$~M$_{\odot}$ supermassive black hole (SMBH). Due to the high fractional mass contribution of clusters to the stellar mass of the galaxies, in the range $20$-$40\%$, the central SMBH would comprise more than $10\%$ of the mass of its host galaxy, naturally explaining the overmassive SMBHs discovered by JWST at $z > 6$., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, to be submitted to ApJ Letters

We present a sample of 1956 individual stellar clumps at redshift 0.73, reflecting the rapid increase towards the peak of the cosmic star formation history. We present an analysis of Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data from WFC3/UVIS, WFC3/IR and ACS, investigating the young stellar cluster (YSC) population in the face-on spiral galaxy M83. Within the field of view of the IR pointings, we identify 454 sources with compact F814W continuum and Pa$\beta$ line emission with a S/N $\geq 3$ as possible YSC candidates embedded in dust. We refine this selection to 97 candidates based on their spectral energy distributions, multi-wavelength morphology, and photometric uncertainties. For sources that are detected in all bands and have mass $> 10^{2.8} M_{\odot}$ (53 sources), we find that by 2 Myr $75\%$ of infrared-selected star clusters have an $A_{V} \leq 1$, and that by 3 Myr the fraction rises to $\sim 82\%$. This evidence of early clearing implies that pre-supernovae feedback from massive stars are responsible for clearing the majority of the natal gas and dust that surround infrared-selected star clusters in M83. Further, this result is consistent with previous estimates based on WFC3 observations, and adds to the growing body of literature suggesting pre-supernova feedback to be crucial for YSC emergence in normal star-forming galaxies. Finally, we find a weak correlation between the YSC concentration index and age over the first 10 Myr, which matches previous studies and indicates little or no change in the size of YSCs in M83 during their early evolution., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables. BlueMUSE is a blue-optimised, medium spectral resolution, panoramic integral field spectrograph under development for the Very Large Telescope (VLT). With an optimised transmission down to 350 nm, spectral resolution of R$\sim$3500 on average across the wavelength range, and a large FoV (1 arcmin$^2$), BlueMUSE will open up a new range of galactic and extragalactic science cases facilitated by its specific capabilities. The BlueMUSE consortium includes 9 institutes located in 7 countries and is led by the Centre de Recherche Astrophysique de Lyon (CRAL). The BlueMUSE project development is currently in Phase A, with an expected first light at the VLT in 2031. We introduce here the Top Level Requirements (TLRs) derived from the main science cases, and then present an overview of the BlueMUSE system and its subsystems fulfilling these TLRs. New JWST near-infrared imaging of the nearby galaxy NGC 628 from the Cycle 1 program JWST-FEAST is combined with archival JWST mid-infrared imaging to calibrate the 21 $\mu$m emission as a star formation rate indicator (SFR) at $\sim$120 pc scales. The Pa$\alpha$ ($\lambda$1.8756 $\mu$m) hydrogen recombination emission line targeted by FEAST provides a reference SFR indicator that is relatively insensitive to dust attenuation, as demonstrated by combining this tracer with the HST H$\alpha$ imaging. Our analysis is restricted to regions that appear compact in nebular line emission and are sufficiently bright to mitigate effects of both age and stochastic sampling of the stellar initial mass function. We find that the 21 $\mu$m emission closely correlates with the nebular line emission, with a power-law with exponent=1.07$\pm$0.01, in agreement with past results. We calibrate a hybrid SFR indicator using a combination of H$\alpha$ and 24 $\mu$m (extrapolated from 21 $\mu$m) tracers and derive the proportionality constant between the two tracers $b=0.095\pm0.007$, which is $\sim$ 3-5 times larger than previous derivations using large regions/entire galaxies. We model these discrepancies as an increasing contribution to the dust heating by progressively older stellar populations for increasing spatial scales, in agreement with earlier findings that star formation is hierarchically distributed in galaxies. Thus, use of hybrid SFR indicators requires prior knowledge of the mean age of the stellar populations dominating the dust heating, which makes their application uncertain. Conversely, non-linear calibrations of SFRs from L(24) alone are more robust, with a factor $\lesssim$2.5 variation across the entire range of L(24) luminosities from HII regions to galaxies., Comment: 28 pages, 9 figures. We investigate the emergence phase of young star clusters in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 628. We use JWST NIRCam and MIRI observations to create spatially resolved maps of the Pa$\alpha$-1.87 $\mu$m and Br$\alpha$-4.05 $\mu$m hydrogen recombination lines, as well as the 3.3 $\mu$m and 7.7 $\mu$m emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). We extract 953 compact HII regions and analyze the PAH emission and morphology at $\sim$10 pc scales in the associated photo-dissociation regions (PDRs). While HII regions remain compact, radial profiles help us to define three PAH morphological classes: compact ($\sim$ 42%), extended ($\sim$ 34%) and open ($\sim$ 24%). The majority of compact and extended PAH morphologies are associated with very young star clusters ($<$5 Myr), while open PAH morphologies are mainly associated with star clusters older than 3 Myr. We observe a general decrease in the 3.3 $\mu$m and 7.7 $\mu$m PAH band emission as a function of cluster age, while their ratio remains constant with age out to 10 Myr and morphological class. The recovered PAH$_{3.3 \mu{\rm m}}$/PAH$_{7.7 \mu{\rm m}}$ ratio is lower than values reported in the literature for reference models that consider neutral and ionized PAH populations and analyses conducted at galactic scales. The 3.3 $\mu$m and 7.7 $\mu$m bands are typically associated to neutral and ionised PAHs, respectively. While we expected neutral PAHs to be suppressed in proximity of the ionizing source, the constant PAH$_{3.3 \mu{\rm m}}$/PAH$_{7.7 \mu{\rm m}}$ ratio would indicate that both families of molecules disrupt at similar rates in proximity of the HII regions., Comment: 25 pages, 14 figures, 3 tables. With stunning clarity, JWST has revealed the Universe's first billion years. The scientific community is analyzing a wealth of JWST imaging and spectroscopic data from that era, and is in the process of rewriting the astronomy textbooks. Here, 1.5 years into the JWST science mission, we provide a snapshot of the great progress made towards understanding the initial chapters of our cosmic history. We highlight discoveries and breakthroughs, topics and issues that are not yet understood, and questions that will be addressed in the coming years, as JWST continues its revolutionary observations of the Early Universe. We present maps of ionized gas (traced by Pa$\alpha$ and Br$\alpha$) and 3.3 $\mu$m Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emission in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 628, derived from new JWST/NIRCam data from the FEAST survey. With this data, we investigate and calibrate the relation between 3.3 $\mu$m PAH emission and star formation rate (SFR) in and around emerging young star clusters (eYSCs) on a scale of ${\sim}40$ pc. We find a tight (correlation coefficient $\rho$${\sim}$0.9) sub-linear (power-law exponent $\alpha$${\sim}$0.75) relation between the 3.3 $\mu$m PAH luminosity surface density and SFR traced by Br$\alpha$ for compact, cospatial (within 0.16$''$ or ${\sim}$7 pc) peaks in Pa$\alpha$, Br$\alpha$, and 3.3 $\mu$m (eYSC-I). The scatter in the relationship does not correlate well with variations in local interstellar medium (ISM) metallicity due to a radial metallicity gradient, but rather is likely due to stochastic sampling of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) and variations in the PAH heating and age of our sources. The deviation from a linear relation may be explained by PAH destruction in more intense ionizing environments, variations in age, and IMF stochasticity at intermediate to low luminosities. We test our results with various continuum subtraction techniques using combinations of NIRCam bands and find that they remain robust with only minor differences in the derived slope and intercept. We present JWST/NIRSpec high-resolution spectroscopy G395H/F290LP of MACS0647-JD, a gravitationally lensed galaxy merger at $z=10.167$. The new spectroscopy, which is acquired for the two lensed images (JD1 and JD2), detects and resolves emission lines in the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) and blue optical, including the resolved [OII]3726,3729 doublet, [NeIII]3870, [HeI]3890, H$\delta$, H$\gamma$, and [OIII]4363. This is the first observation of the resolved [OII]3726,3729 doublet for a galaxy at $z>8$. We measure a line flux ratio [OII]3729/3726 $= 0.9 \pm 0.3$, which corresponds to an estimated electron density of $\log(n_{e} / \rm{cm}^{-3}) = 2.9 \pm 0.5$. This is significantly higher than the electron densities of local galaxies reported in the literature. We compile the measurements from the literature and further analyze the redshift evolution of $n_{e}$. We find that the redshift evolution follows the power-law form of $n_{e} = A\times (1+z)^{p}$ with $A=54^{+31}_{-23}$ cm$^{-3}$ and $p=1.2^{+0.4}_{-0.4}$. This power-law form may be explained by a combination of metallicity and morphological evolution of galaxies, which become, on average, more metal-poor and more compact with increasing redshift., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures. JWST spectroscopy has revolutionized our understanding of galaxies in the early universe. Covering wavelengths up to $5.3\,{\rm \mu m}$, NIRSpec can detect rest-frame optical emission lines H$\alpha$ out to $z = 7$ and [O III] to $z = 9.5$. Observing these lines in more distant galaxies requires longer wavelength spectroscopy with MIRI. Here we present MIRI MRS IFU observations of the lensed galaxy merger MACS0647$-$JD at $z = 10.165$. With exposure times of 4.2 hours in each of two bands, we detect H$\alpha$ at $9\sigma$, [O III]$\,\lambda5008$ at $11\sigma$, and [O III]$\,\lambda4960$ at $3\sigma$. Combined with previously reported NIRSpec spectroscopy that yields seven emission lines including the auroral line [O III]$\,\lambda4363$, we present the first direct metallicity measurement of a $z > 10$ galaxy: $12+{\rm log(O/H)}= 7.79\pm0.09$, or $0.13^{+0.02}_{-0.03}\,Z_{\odot}$. This is similar to galaxies at $z \sim 4 - 9$ with direct metallicity measurements, though higher than expected given the high specific star formation rate ${\rm log(sSFR / yr^{-1})} = -7.4 \pm 0.3$. We further constrain the ionization parameter ${\rm log}(U)$ = $-1.9 \pm 0.1$, ionizing photon production efficiency ${\rm log}(\xi_{\rm ion})$ = $25.3\pm0.1$, and star formation rate $5.0\pm0.6\,M_{\odot}/{\rm yr}$ within the past $10\,{\rm Myr}$. We present recent JWST NIRCam imaging observations of SPT0615-JD (also known as the Cosmic Gems Arc), lensed by the galaxy cluster SPT-CL J0615-5746. The 5-arcsec-long arc is the most highly magnified $z>10$ galaxy known, straddling the lensing critical curve and revealing five star clusters with radii $\sim 1$ pc or less. We measure the full arc to have F200W 24.5 AB mag, consisting of two mirror images, each 25.3 AB mag with a magnification $\mu \sim 60$ (delensed 29.7 AB mag, $M_{UV} = -17.8$). The galaxy has an extremely strong Lyman break F115W$-$F200W $>3.2$ mag ($2\sigma$ lower limit), is undetected in all bluer filters ($< 2\sigma$), and has a very blue continuum slope redward of the break ($\beta = -2.7 \pm 0.1$), resulting in a photometric redshift $z_{phot} = 10.2 \pm 0.2$ (95% confidence) with no significant likelihood below $z < 9.8$. Based on SED fitting to the total photometry, we estimate an intrinsic stellar mass of $M_{*} \sim 2.4 - 5.6 \times 10^{7} M_{\odot}$, young mass-weighted age of $\sim 21 - 79$ Myr, low dust content ($A_V < 0.15$), and a low metallicity of $\lesssim 1\%~Z_{\odot}$. We identify a fainter third counterimage candidate within 2.2 arcsec of the predicted position, lensed to AB mag 28.4 and magnified by $\mu \sim 2$, suggesting the fold arc may only show $\sim60$% of the galaxy. We survey the young star cluster population in the dwarf galaxy NGC4449 with the goal of investigating how stellar feedback may depend on the clusters' properties. Using Ultraviolet(UV)-optical-NearIR(NIR) photometry obtained from the Hubble Space Telescope, we have recovered 99 compact sources exhibiting emission in the Pa$\beta$ hydrogen recombination line. Our analysis reveals these sources possess masses $10^{2}

As the nearest confirmed Lyman continuum (LyC) emitter, Haro 11 is an exceptional laboratory for studying LyC escape processes crucial to cosmic reionization. Our new HST/COS G130M/1055 observations of its three star-forming knots now reveal that the observed LyC originates in Knots B and C, with $903 - 912~\r{A}$ luminosities of $1.9\pm1.5 \times 10^{40}~\rm erg~s^{-1}$ and $0.9\pm0.7 \times 10^{40}~\rm erg~s^{-1}$, respectively. We derive local escape fractions $f_{\rm{esc, 912}} = 3.4\pm2.9\%$ and $5.1\pm4.3\%$ for Knots B and C, respectively. Our Starburst99 modeling shows dominant populations on the order of $\sim1-4$ Myr and $1-2\times10^7 \rm~M_\odot$ in each knot, with the youngest population in Knot B. Thus, the knot with the strongest LyC detection has the highest LyC production. However, LyC escape is likely less efficient in Knot B than in Knot C due to higher neutral gas covering. Our results therefore stress the importance of the intrinsic ionizing luminosity, and not just the escape fraction, for LyC detection. Similarly, the Ly$\alpha$ escape fraction does not consistently correlate with LyC flux, nor do narrow Ly$\alpha$ red peaks. High observed Ly$\alpha$ luminosity and low Ly$\alpha$ peak velocity separation, however, do correlate with higher LyC escape. Another insight comes from the undetected Knot A, which drives the Green Pea properties of Haro 11. Its density-bounded conditions suggest highly anisotropic LyC escape. Finally, both of the LyC-leaking Knots, B and C, host ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs). While stars strongly dominate over the ULXs in LyC emission, this intriguing coincidence underscores the importance of unveiling the role of accretors in LyC escape and reionization., Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures. The Wide-field Spectroscopic Telescope (WST) is proposed as a new facility dedicated to the efficient delivery of spectroscopic surveys. This white paper summarises the initial concept as well as the corresponding science cases. WST will feature simultaneous operation of a large field-of-view (3 sq. degree), a high multiplex (20,000) multi-object spectrograph (MOS) and a giant 3x3 sq. arcmin integral field spectrograph (IFS). In scientific capability these requirements place WST far ahead of existing and planned facilities. Given the current investment in deep imaging surveys and noting the diagnostic power of spectroscopy, WST will fill a crucial gap in astronomical capability and work synergistically with future ground and space-based facilities. This white paper shows that WST can address outstanding scientific questions in the areas of cosmology; galaxy assembly, evolution, and enrichment, including our own Milky Way; origin of stars and planets; time domain and multi-messenger astrophysics. WST's uniquely rich dataset will deliver unforeseen discoveries in many of these areas. We study the populations of stellar clumps in three high-redshift galaxies, at z=4.92, 4.88 and 4.03, gravitationally lensed by the foreground galaxy clusters MS1358, RCS0224 and MACS0940, respectively. The lensed galaxies consist of multiple counter-images with large magnifications, mostly above $\rm \mu>5$ and in some cases reaching $\rm \mu>20$. We use rest-frame UV observations from the HST to extract and analyse their clump populations, counting 10, 3 and 11 unique sources, respectively. Most of the clumps have derived effective radii in the range $\rm R_{eff}=10-100$ pc, with the smallest one down to 6 pc, i.e. consistent with the sizes of individual stellar clusters. Their UV magnitudes correspond to $\rm SFR_{UV}$ mostly in the range $\rm 0.1-1\ M_\odot yr^{-1}$; the most extreme ones, reaching $\rm SFR_{UV}=5\ M_\odot yr^{-1}$ are among the UV-brightest compact ($\rm R_{eff}<100$ pc) star-forming regions observed at any redshift. Clump masses span a broad range, from $10^6$ to $\rm 10^9\ M_\odot$; stellar mass surface densities are comparable, and in many cases larger, than the ones of local stellar clusters, while being typically 10 times larger in size. By compiling published properties of clump populations at similar spatial resolution between redshift 0 and 5, we find a tentative evolution of $\rm \Sigma_{SFR}$ and $\rm \Sigma_{M_\star}$ with redshift, especially when very compact clumps ($\rm R_{eff}\leqslant20$ pc) are considered. We suggest that these trends with redshift reflect the changes in the host galaxy environments where clumps form. Comparisons with the local universe clumps/star clusters shows that, although rare, conditions for elevated clump $\rm \Sigma_{SFR}$ and $\rm \Sigma_{M_\star}$ can be found., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables. We analyze the far-ultraviolet spectroscopy of 20 young and massive star clusters (YSCs) in 11 nearby star-forming galaxies. We probe the interstellar gas intervening along the line of sight, detecting several metal absorption lines of a wide range of ionization potentials, from 6.0 eV to 77.5 eV. Multiple-component Voigt fits to the absorption lines are used to study the kinematics of the gas. We find that nearly all targets in the sample feature gas outflowing from 30 up to 190 km per second, often both in the neutral and ionized phase. The outflow velocities correlate with the underlying stellar population properties directly linked to the feedback: the mass of the YSCs, the photon production rate and the instantaneous mechanical luminosity produced by stellar winds and SNe. We detect a neutral inflow in 4 targets, which we interpret as likely not associated with the star cluster but tracing larger scale gas kinematics. A comparison between the outflows energy and that produced by the associated young stellar populations suggests an average coupling efficiency of 10 per cent with a broad scatter. Our results extend the relation found in previous works between galactic outflows and the host galaxy star-formation rate to smaller scales, pointing towards the key role that clustered star formation and feedback play in regulating galaxy growth., Comment: Accepted for publication on the Astronomical Journal on 14th February 2024. 32 pages, 13 figures

The Cosmic Gems arc is among the brightest and highly magnified galaxies observed at redshift $z\sim10.2$. However, it is an intrinsically UV faint galaxy, in the range of those now thought to drive the reionization of the Universe. Hitherto the smallest features resolved in a galaxy at a comparable redshift are between a few hundreds and a few tens of parsecs. Here we report JWST observations of the Cosmic Gems. The light of the galaxy is resolved into five star clusters located in a region smaller than 70 parsec. They exhibit minimal dust attenuation and low metallicity, ages younger than 50 Myr and intrinsic masses of $\sim10^6$ M$_{\odot}$. Their lensing-corrected sizes are approximately 1 pc, resulting in stellar surface densities near $10^5$~M$_{\odot}$/pc$^2$, three orders of magnitude higher than typical young star clusters in the local universe. Despite the uncertainties inherent to the lensing model, they are consistent with being gravitationally bound stellar systems, i.e., proto-globular clusters. We conclude that star cluster formation and feedback likely contributed to shape the properties of galaxies during the epoch of reionization. [Abridged], Comment: Accepted for publication

We compare the molecular cloud properties in sub-galactic regions of two galaxies, barred spiral NGC 1313, which is forming many massive clusters, and flocculent spiral NGC 7793, which is forming significantly fewer massive clusters despite having a similar star formation rate to NGC 1313. We find that there are larger variations in cloud properties between different regions within each galaxy than there are between the galaxies on a global scale, especially for NGC 1313. There are higher masses, linewidths, pressures, and virial parameters in the arms of NGC 1313 and center of NGC 7793 than in the interarm and outer regions of the galaxies. The massive cluster formation of NGC 1313 may be driven by its greater variation in environments, allowing more clouds with the necessary conditions to arise, although no one parameter seems primarily responsible for the difference in star formation. Meanwhile NGC 7793 has clouds that are as massive and have as much kinetic energy as clouds in the arms of NGC 1313, but have densities and pressures more similar to the interarm regions and so are less inclined to collapse and form stars. The cloud properties in NGC 1313 and NGC 7793 suggest that spiral arms, bars, interarm regions, and flocculent spirals each represent distinct environments with regard to molecular cloud populations. We see surprisingly little difference in surface densities between the regions, suggesting that the differences in surface densities frequently seen between arm and interarm regions of lower-resolution studies are indicative of the sparsity of molecular clouds, rather than differences in their true surface density., Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a comparative study of the molecular gas in two galaxies from the LEGUS sample: barred spiral NGC 1313 and flocculent spiral NGC 7793. These two galaxies have similar masses, metallicities, and star formation rates, but NGC 1313 is forming significantly more massive star clusters than NGC 7793, especially young massive clusters (<10 Myr, >10^4 Msol). Using ALMA CO(2-1) observations of the two galaxies with the same sensitivities and resolutions of 13 pc, we directly compare the molecular gas in these two similar galaxies to determine the physical conditions responsible for their large disparity in cluster formation. By fitting size-linewidth relations for the clouds in each galaxy, we find that NGC 1313 has a higher intercept than NGC 7793, implying that its clouds have higher kinetic energies at a given size scale. NGC 1313 also has more clouds near virial equilibrium than NGC 7793, which may be connected to its higher rate of massive cluster formation. However, these virially bound clouds do not show a stronger correlation with young clusters than that of the general cloud population. We find surprisingly small differences between the distributions of molecular cloud populations in the two galaxies, though the largest of those differences are that NGC 1313 has higher surface densities and lower free-fall times., Comment: 25 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We investigate the variation in the upper end of stellar initial mass function (uIMF) in 375 young and compact star clusters in five nearby galaxies within $\sim 5$ Mpc. All the young stellar clusters (YSCs) in the sample have ages $\lesssim 4$ Myr and masses above 500 $M_{\odot}$, according to standard stellar models. The YSC catalogs were produced from Hubble Space Telescope images obtained as part of the Legacy ExtraGalactic UV Survey (LEGUS) Hubble treasury program. They are used here to test whether the uIMF is universal or changes as a function of the cluster's stellar mass. We perform this test by measuring the H$\alpha$ luminosity of the star clusters as a proxy for their ionizing photon rate, and charting its trend as a function of cluster mass. Large cluster numbers allow us to mitigate the stochastic sampling of the uIMF. The advantage of our approach relative to previous similar attempts is the use of cluster catalogs that have been selected independently of the presence of H$\alpha$ emission, thus removing a potential sample bias. We find that the uIMF, as traced by the H$\alpha$ emission, shows no dependence on cluster mass, suggesting that the maximum stellar mass that can be produced in star clusters is universal, in agreement with previous findings.

JWST observations of the strongly lensed galaxy The Sparkler have revealed a population of gravitationally bound globular cluster (GC) candidates. Different analyses have resulted in broadly similar ages but significantly different metallicities, questioning the assembly history that has led to the formation of such a population. In this letter, we re-analyse the two sets of photometry available in the literature with the code MCMAME especially tailored to fit physical properties of GCs. We find the ages and metallicities from both datasets are consistent within 1 $\sigma$ uncertainties. A significant group of GCs is consistent with being old and metal poor ([Fe/H] $\sim -1.7$). For this group, the ages do not converge, hence, we conclude that they are definitively older than 1 Gyr and can be as old as the age of the Universe. The remaining GCs have younger ages and a metallicity spread. The ages and metallicities distribution of GCs in the Sparkler are consistent with those observed in Local Group's galaxies at similar lookback times. We present JWST/NIRSpec prism spectroscopy of MACS0647-JD, the triply-lensed $z \sim 11$ candidate discovered in HST imaging and spatially resolved by JWST imaging into two components A and B. Spectroscopy of component A yields a spectroscopic redshift $z=10.17$ based on 7 detected emission lines: CIII] $\lambda\lambda$1907,1909, [OII] $\lambda$3727, [NeIII] $\lambda$3869, [NeIII] $\lambda$3968, H$\delta$ $\lambda$4101, H$\gamma$ $\lambda$4340, and [OIII] $\lambda$4363. These are the second-most distant detections of these emission lines to date, in a galaxy observed just 460 million years after the Big Bang. Based on observed and extrapolated line flux ratios we derive a gas-phase metallicity $Z =$ log(O/H) = $7.5 - 8.0$, or $(0.06 - 0.2)$ $Z_\odot$, ionization parameter log($U$) $\sim -1.9\pm0.2$, and an ionizing photon production efficiency ${\rm log}(\xi_{\rm ion})=25.2\pm0.2\,$erg$^{-1}$ Hz. The spectrum has a softened Lyman-$\alpha$ break, evidence for a strong Ly$\alpha$ damping wing, suggesting that MACS0647-JD was unable to ionize its surroundings beyond its immediate vicinity ($R_{\text{HII}} \ll 1$ pMpc). The Ly$\alpha$ damping wing also suppresses the F150W photometry, explaining the slightly overestimated photometric redshift $z = 10.6 \pm 0.3$. MACS0647-JD has a stellar mass log($M/M_\odot$) = $8.1 \pm 0.3$, including $\sim$ 6$\times 10^7 M_\odot$ in component A, most of which formed recently (within $\sim$ 20 Myr) with a star formation rate $2\pm1 M_\odot$ / yr, all within an effective radius $70\pm24\,$pc. The smaller component B ($r \sim 20$) pc is likely older ($\sim$100 Myr) with more dust ($A_V \sim 0.1$ mag), as found previously. Spectroscopy of a fainter companion galaxy C separated by a distance of \about\ 3$\,$kpc reveals a Lyman break consistent with $z = 10.17$. Lyman $\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$) is now routinely used as a tool for studying high-redshift galaxies and its resonant nature means it can trace neutral hydrogen around star-forming galaxies. Integral field spectrograph measurements of high-redshift Ly$\alpha$ emitters indicate that significant extended Ly$\alpha$ halo emission is ubiquitous around such objects. We present a sample of redshift 0.23 to 0.31 galaxies observed with the Hubble Space Telescope selected to match the star formation properties of high-$z$ samples while optimizing the observations for detection of low surface brightness Ly$\alpha$ emission. The Ly$\alpha$ escape fractions range between 0.7\% and 37\%, and we detect extended Ly$\alpha$ emission around six out of seven targets. We find Ly$\alpha$ halo to UV scale length ratios around 6:1 which is marginally lower than high-redshift observations, and halo flux fractions between 60\% and 85\% -- consistent with high-redshift observations -- when using comparable methods. However, our targets show additional extended stellar UV emission: we parametrize this with a new double exponential model. We find that this parametrization does not strongly affect the observed Ly$\alpha$ halo fractions. We find that deeper H$\alpha$ data would be required to firmly determine the origin of Ly$\alpha$ halo emission, however, there are indications that H$\alpha$ is more extended than the central FUV profile, potentially indicating conditions favorable for the escape of ionizing radiation. We discuss our results in the context of high-redshift galaxies, cosmological simulations, evolutionary studies of the circumgalactic medium in emission, and the emission of ionizing radiation., Comment: 20 page, 14 figures, 6 tables. Multi-wavelength images from the Hubble Space Telescope covering the wavelength range 0.27-1.6 $\mu$m show that the central area of the nearby dwarf galaxy NGC4449 contains several tens of compact sources that are emitting in the hydrogen recombination line Pa$\beta$ (1.2818 $\mu$m) but are only marginally detected in H$\alpha$ (0.6563 $\mu$m) and undetected at wavelengths $\lambda\le$0.55 $\mu$m. An analysis of the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of these sources indicates that they are likely relatively young star clusters heavily attenuated by dust. The selection function used to identify the sources prevents meaningful statistical analyses of their age, mass, and dust extinction distributions. However, these cluster candidates have ages $\sim$5-6 Myr and A$_V>$6 mag, according to their SED fits, and are extremely compact, with typical deconvolved radii of 1 pc. The dusty clusters are located at the periphery of dark clouds within the galaxy and appear to be partially embedded. Density and pressure considerations indicate that the HII regions surrounding these clusters may be stalled, and that pre-supernova feedback has not been able to clear the clusters of their natal cocoons. These findings are in potential tension with existing models that regulate star formation with pre-supernova feedback, since pre-supernova feedback acts on short timescales, $\lesssim$4 Myr, for a standard Stellar Initial Mass function. The existence of a population of dusty star clusters with ages $>$4 Myr, if confirmed by future observations, paints a more complex picture for the role of stellar feedback in controlling star formation., Comment: 27 pages, 22 figures; accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Current observations favour that the massive ultraviolet-bright clumps with a median stellar mass of $\sim 10^7~M_{\odot}$, ubiquitously observed in $z\sim 1-3$ galaxies, are star-forming regions formed in-situ in galaxies. It has been proposed that they result from gas fragmentation due to gravitational instability of gas-rich, turbulent, high-redshift discs. We bring support to this scenario by reporting the new discovery of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) in the strongly lensed, clumpy, main-sequence galaxy, A521-sys1, at $z=1.043$. Its CO(4-3) emission was mapped with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) at an angular resolution of $0.19''\times 0.16''$, reading down to 30~pc thanks to gravitational lensing. We identified 14 GMCs, most being virialized, with $10^{5.9}- 10^{7.9}~M_{\odot}$ masses and a median $800~M_{\odot}~\rm{pc}^{-2}$ molecular gas mass surface density, that are, respectively, 100 and 10 times higher than for local GMCs. They are also characterized by 10 times higher supersonic turbulence with a median Mach number of 60. They end up to fall above the Larson scaling relations, similarly to the GMCs in another clumpy $z\simeq 1$ galaxy, the Cosmic Snake, although noteworthy differences between the two sets of high-redshift GMCs exist. Altogether they support that GMCs form with properties that adjust to the ambient interstellar medium conditions prevalent in the host galaxy whatever its redshift. Around 400 million years after the Big Bang, the ultraviolet emission from star-forming galaxies reionized the Universe. Ionizing radiation (Lyman Continuum, LyC) is absorbed by cold neutral hydrogen gas (HI) within galaxies, hindering the escape of LyC photons. Since the HI reservoir of LyC emitters has never been mapped, major uncertainties remain on how LyC photons escape galaxies and ionize the intergalactic medium. We have directly imaged the neutral gas in the nearby reionization-era analog galaxy Haro 11 with the 21cm line to identify the mechanism enabling ionizing radiation escape. We find that merger-driven interactions have caused a bulk offset of the neutral gas by about 6 kpc from the center of the galaxy, where LyC emission production sites are located. This could facilitate the escape of ionizing radiation into our line of sight. Galaxy interactions can cause both elevated LyC production and large-scale displacement of HI from the regions where these photons are produced. They could contribute to the anisotropic escape of LyC radiation from galaxies and the reionization of the Universe. We study the spatially resolved stellar populations of 444 galaxies at $0.3

We report the discovery of two extremely magnified lensed star candidates behind the galaxy cluster MACS J0647.7+7015, in recent multi-band James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) NIRCam observations. The candidates are seen in a previously known, $z_{phot}\simeq4.8$ dropout giant arc that straddles the critical curve. The candidates lie near the expected critical curve position but lack clear counter images on the other side of it, suggesting these are possibly stars undergoing caustic crossings. We present revised lensing models for the cluster, including multiply imaged galaxies newly identified in the JWST data, and use them to estimate a background macro-magnification of at least $\gtrsim90$ and $\gtrsim50$ at the positions of the two candidates, respectively. With these values, we expect effective, caustic-crossing magnifications of $10^4-10^5$ for the two star candidates. The Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) of the two candidates match well spectra of B-type stars with best-fit surface temperatures of $\sim10,000$ K, and $\sim12,000$ K, respectively, and we show that such stars with masses $\gtrsim20$ M$_{\odot}$ and $\gtrsim50$ M$_{\odot}$, respectively, can become sufficiently magnified to be observed. We briefly discuss other alternative explanations and conclude these are likely lensed stars, but also acknowledge that the less magnified candidate may instead be or reside in a star cluster. These star candidates constitute the second highest-redshift examples to date after Earendel at $z_{phot}\simeq6.2$, establishing further the potential of studying extremely magnified stars to high redshifts with the JWST. MACS0647$-$JD is a triply-lensed $z\sim11$ galaxy originally discovered with the Hubble Space Telescope. Here we report new JWST imaging, which clearly resolves MACS0647$-$JD as having two components that are either merging galaxies or stellar complexes within a single galaxy. Both are very small, with stellar masses $\sim10^8\,M_\odot$ and radii $r<100\,\rm pc$. The brighter larger component "A" is intrinsically very blue ($\beta\sim-2.6$), likely due to very recent star formation and no dust, and is spatially extended with an effective radius $\sim70\,\rm pc$. The smaller component "B" appears redder ($\beta\sim-2$), likely because it is older ($100-200\,\rm Myr$) with mild dust extinction ($A_V\sim0.1\,\rm mag$), and a smaller radius $\sim20\,\rm pc$. We identify galaxies with similar colors in a high-redshift simulation, finding their star formation histories to be out of phase. With an estimated stellar mass ratio of roughly 2:1 and physical projected separation $\sim400\,\rm pc$, we may be witnessing a galaxy merger 400 million years after the Big Bang. We also identify a candidate companion galaxy C $\sim3\,{\rm kpc}$ away, likely destined to merge with galaxies A and B. The combined light from galaxies A+B is magnified by factors of $\sim$8, 5, and 2 in three lensed images JD1, 2, and 3 with F356W fluxes $\sim322$, $203$, $86\,\rm nJy$ (AB mag 25.1, 25.6, 26.6). MACS0647$-$JD is significantly brighter than other galaxies recently discovered at similar redshifts with JWST. Without magnification, it would have AB mag 27.3 ($M_{UV}=-20.4$). With a high confidence level, we obtain a photometric redshift of $z=10.6\pm0.3$ based on photometry measured in 6 NIRCam filters spanning $1-5\rm\mu m$, out to $4300\,\r{A}$ rest-frame. We present the clump populations detected in 18 lensed galaxies at redshifts 1 to 8.5 within the lensing cluster field SMACS0723. The recent JWST Early Release Observations of this poorly known region of the sky have revealed numerous point-like sources within and surrounding their host galaxies, undetected in the shallower HST images. We use JWST multiband photometry and the lensing model of this galaxy cluster to estimate the intrinsic sizes and magnitudes of the stellar clumps. We derive optical restframe effective radii from $<$10 to 100s pc and masses ranging from $\sim10^5$ to $10^9$ M$_{\odot}$, overlapping with massive star clusters in the local universe. The ages range from 1 Myr to 1 Gyr. We compare the crossing time to the age of the clumps and determine that between 45 and 60 % of the detected clumps are consistent with being gravitationally bound. The lack of Gyr old clumps suggest that the dissolution time scales are shorter than 1 Gyr. We see a significant increase in the luminosity (mass) surface density of the clumps with redshift. Clumps in galaxies at the reionisation era have stellar densities higher than massive clusters in the local universe. We zoom-in into single galaxies at redshift $<6$ and find for two galaxies, the Sparkler and the Firework, that their star clusters/clumps show distinctive colour distributions and location surrounding their host galaxy that are compatible with being accredited or formed during merger events. The ages of some of the compact clusters are between 1 and 4 Gyr, e.g., globular cluster precursors formed around 9-12 Gyr ago. Our study, conducted on a small sample of galaxies, shows the potential of JWST observations for understanding the conditions under which star clusters form in rapidly evolving galaxies., Comment: Final version accepted for publication in MNRAS. We study the population of star-forming clumps in A521-sys1, a $\rm z=1.04$ system gravitationally lensed by the foreground ($\rm z=0.25$) cluster Abell 0521. The galaxy presents one complete counter--image with a mean magnification of $\rm \mu\sim4$ and a wide arc containing two partial images of A521-sys1 with magnifications reaching $\rm \mu>20$, allowing the investigations of clumps down to scales of $\rm R_{eff}<50$ pc. We identify 18 unique clumps with a total of 45 multiple images. Intrinsic sizes and UV magnitudes reveal clumps with elevated surface brightnesses, comparable to similar systems at redshifts $\rm z\gtrsim1.0$. Such clumps account for $\sim40\%$ of the galaxy UV luminosity, implying that a significant fraction of the recent star-formation activity is taking place there. Clump masses range from $\rm 10^6\ M_\odot$ to $\rm 10^9\ M_\odot$ and sizes from tens to hundreds of parsec, resulting in mass surface densities from $10$ to $\rm 10^3\ M_\odot\ pc^{-2}$, with a median of $\rm \sim10^2\ M_\odot\ pc^{-2}$. These properties suggest that we detect star formation taking place across a wide range of scale, from cluster aggregates to giant star-forming complexes. We find ages of less than $100$ Myr, consistent with clumps being observed close to their natal region. The lack of galactocentric trends with mass, mass density, or age and the lack of old migrated clumps can be explained either by dissolution of clumps after few $\sim100$ Myr or by stellar evolution making them fall below the detectability limits of our data., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables + appendix (6 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables). We study pre-supernova feedback in a sample of $\sim$ 4700 HII regions in the nearby spiral galaxy M83, identified on their H$\alpha$ emission. We pectroscopically identify Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars populating the star-forming regions. For each HII region, we compute the pressure of ionised gas ($P_{\rm ion}$) and the direct radiation pressure ($P_{\rm dir}$) acting in the region, and investigate how they vary with galactocentric distance, with the physical properties of the region, and with the pressure of the galactic environment ($P_\mathrm{DE}$). For a subset of $\sim$ 500 regions, we also investigate the link between the pressure terms and the properties of the cluster population (age, mass, and LyC flux). We find that $P_{\rm ion}$ dominates over $P_{\rm dir}$ by at least a factor of 10 on average over the disk. Both pressure terms are strongly enhanced and become almost comparable in the central starburst region. In the disk ($R \geq 0.15~R_e$), we observe that $P_{\rm dir}$ stays approximately constant with galactocentric distance. $P_{\rm dir}$ is positively correlated with an increase in radiation field strength (linked to the negative metallicity gradient in the galaxy), while it decreases in low extinction regions. $P_{\rm ion}$ decreases constantly for increasing galactocentric distances. In general, we observe that HII regions near the center are underpressured with respect to their surroundings, whereas regions in the disk are overpressured and hence expanding. We find that regions hosting younger clusters or having more mass in young star clusters have a higher internal pressure, indicating that clustered star formation is likely playing a dominant role in setting the pressure. Finally, we estimate that only 13 % of HII regions hosting young clusters and WR stars have $f_{\rm esc} \geq 0$.[Abridged], Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Observations of 12CO J=1-0 and HCN J=1-0 emission from NGC 5194 (M51) made with the 50~meter Large Millimeter Telescope and the SEQUOIA focal plane array are presented. Using the HCN to CO ratio, we examine the dense gas mass fraction over a range of environmental conditions within the galaxy. Within the disk, the dense gas mass fraction varies along spiral arms but the average value over all spiral arms is comparable to the mean value of interarm regions. We suggest that the near constant dense gas mass fraction throughout the disk arises from a population of density stratified, self gravitating molecular clouds and the required density threshold to detect each spectral line. The measured dense gas fraction significantly increases in the central bulge in response to the effective pressure, P_e, from the weight from the stellar and gas components. This pressure modifies the dynamical state of the molecular cloud population and possibly, the HCN emitting regions, in the central bulge from self-gravitating to diffuse configurations in which P_e is greater than the gravitational energy density of individual clouds. Diffuse molecular clouds comprise a significant fraction of the molecular gas mass in the central bulge, which may account for the measured sublinear relationships between the surface densities of the star formation rate and molecular and dense gas., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, 5 tables. The analysis of star cluster ages in tandem with the morphology of their HII regions can provide insight into the processes that clear a cluster's natal gas, as well as the accuracy of cluster ages and dust reddening derived from Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) fitting. We classify 3757 star clusters in 16 nearby galaxies according to their H$\alpha$ morphology (concentrated, partially exposed, no emission), using Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging from the Legacy ExtraGalactic Ultraviolet Survey (LEGUS). We find: 1) The mean SED ages of clusters with concentrated (1-2 Myr) and partially exposed HII region morphologies (2-3 Myr) indicate a relatively early onset of gas clearing and a short (1-2 Myr) clearing timescale. 2) The reddening of clusters can be overestimated due to the presence of red supergiants, which is a result of stochastic sampling of the IMF in low mass clusters. 3) The age-reddening degeneracy impacts the results of the SED fitting - out of 1408 clusters with M$_*$ $\geq$ 5000 M$_{\odot}$, we find that at least 46 (3%) have SED ages which appear significantly underestimated or overestimated based on H$\alpha$ and their environment, while the total percentage of poor age estimates is expected to be several times larger. 4) Lastly, we examine the dependence of the morphological classifications on spatial resolution. At HST resolution, our conclusions are robust to the distance range spanned by the sample (3-10 Mpc). However, analysis of ground-based H$\alpha$ images shows that compact and partially exposed morphologies frequently cannot be distinguished from each other., Comment: 24 pages, 14 figures, 9 tables; accepted for publication in MNRAS

Here we describe a new study of the SNRs and SNR candidates in nearby face-on spiral galaxy M83, based primarily on MUSE integral field spectroscopy. Our revised catalog of SNR candidates in M83 has 366 objects, 81 of which are reported here for the first time. Of these, 229 lie within the MUSE observation region, 160 of which have spectra with [SII]:Halpha ratios exceeding 0.4, the value generally accepted as confirmation that an emission nebula is shock-heated. Combined with 51 SNR candidates outside the MUSE region with high [SII]:Halpha ratios, there are 211 spectroscopically-confirmed SNRs in M83, the largest number of confirmed SNRs in any external galaxy. MUSE's combination of relatively high spectral resolution and broad wavelength coverage has allowed us to explore two other properties of SNRs that could serve as the basis of future SNR searches. Specifically, most of the objects identified as SNRs on the basis of [SII]:Halpha ratios exhibit more velocity broadening and lower ratios of [SIII]:[SII] emission than HII regions. A search for nebulae with the very broad emission lines expected from young, rapidly expanding remnants revealed none, except for the previously identified B12-174a. The SNRs identified in M83 are, with few exceptions, middle-aged ISM-dominated ones. Smaller diameter candidates show a larger range of velocity broadening and a larger range of gas densities than the larger diameter objects, as expected if the SNRs expanding into denser gas brighten and then fade from view at smaller diameters than those expanding into a more tenuous ISM, Comment: 28 page, including 14 figures and 4 tables; accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a large VLT/MUSE mosaic (3.8 x 3.8 kpc) of the nearby spiral galaxy M83, with a spatial resolution ~20 pc. We obtained the kinematics of the stars and ionised gas, and compared them with molecular gas kinematics from ALMA CO(2-1). We separated the ionised gas into HII regions and diffuse ionised gas (DIG) and determined the fraction of Ha luminosity originating from the DIG (f_DIG). We observe that both stars and gas trace the galactic disk rotation, as well as a fast-rotating nuclear component, likely connected to secular processes driven by the galactic bar. In the gas kinematics, we observe a stream east of the nucleus, redshifted with respect to the disk. The stream is surrounded by an extended ionised gas region with enhanced velocity dispersion and a high ionisation state, which is largely consistent with being ionised by slow shocks. We interpret this feature as either the superposition of the disk and an extraplanar layer of DIG, or as a bar-driven inflow of shocked gas. A double Gaussian component fit to the Ha line also reveals the presence of a nuclear biconic structure whose axis of symmetry is perpendicular to the bar. The two cones appear blue- and redshifted along the line of sight and stand out for having an Ha emission separated by up to 200 km s-1 from that of the disk, and a high velocity dispersion ~80-200 km s-1. At the far end of the cones, we observe that the gas is consistent with being ionised by shocks. These features had never been observed before in M83; we postulate that they are tracing a starburst-driven outflow shocking into the surrounding ISM. Finally, we obtain f_DIG ~ 13% in our field of view. We inspect the emission of the HII regions and DIG in `BPT' diagrams, finding that in HII regions photoionisation accounts for 99.8% of the Ha flux, whereas the DIG has a mixed contribution from photoionisation (94.9%) and shocks (5.1%). Integral field units enable resolved studies of a large number of star-forming regions across entire nearby galaxies, providing insight on the conversion of gas into stars and the feedback from the emerging stellar populations over unprecedented dynamic ranges in terms of spatial scale, star-forming region properties, and environments. We use the VLT/MUSE legacy data set covering the central $35$ arcmin$^{2}$ (${\sim}12$ kpc$^{2}$) of the nearby galaxy NGC 300 to quantify the effect of stellar feedback as a function of the local galactic environment. We extract spectra from emission line regions identified within dendrograms, combine emission line ratios and line widths to distinguish between HII regions, planetary nebulae, and supernova remnants, and compute their ionised gas properties, gas-phase oxygen abundances, and feedback-related pressure terms. For the HII regions, we find that the direct radiation pressure ($P_\mathrm{dir}$) and the pressure of the ionised gas ($P_{HII}$) weakly increase towards larger galactocentric radii, i.e. along the galaxy's (negative) abundance and (positive) extinction gradients. While the increase of $P_{HII}$ with galactocentric radius is likely due to higher photon fluxes from lower-metallicity stellar populations, we find that the increase of $P_\mathrm{dir}$ is likely driven by the combination of higher photon fluxes and enhanced dust content at larger galactocentric radii. In light of the above, we investigate the effect of increased pre-supernova feedback at larger galactocentric distances (lower metallicities and increased dust mass surface density) on the ISM, finding that supernovae at lower metallicities expand into lower-density environments, thereby enhancing the impact of supernova feedback., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We use the angular Two Point Correlation Function (TPCF) to investigate the hierarchical distribution of young star clusters in 12 local (3--18 Mpc) star-forming galaxies using star cluster catalogues obtained with the \textit{Hubble Space Telescope} (\textit{HST}) as part of the Treasury Program LEGUS (Legacy ExtraGalactic UV Survey). The sample spans a range of different morphological types, allowing us to infer how the physical properties of the galaxy affect the spatial distribution of the clusters. We also prepare a range of physically motivated toy models to compare with and interpret the observed features in the TPCFs. We find that, conforming to earlier studies, young clusters ($T \la 10\, \mathrm{Myr}$) have power-law TPCFs that are characteristic of fractal distributions with a fractal dimension $D_2$, and this scale-free nature extends out to a maximum scale $l_{\mathrm{corr}}$ beyond which the distribution becomes Poissonian. However, $l_{\mathrm{corr}}$, and $D_2$ vary significantly across the sample, and are correlated with a number of host galaxy physical properties, suggesting that there are physical differences in the underlying star cluster distributions. We also find that hierarchical structuring weakens with age, evidenced by flatter TPCFs for older clusters ($T \ga 10\, \mathrm{Myr}$), that eventually converges to the residual correlation expected from a completely random large-scale radial distribution of clusters in the galaxy in $\sim 100 \, \mathrm{Myr}$. We study the ionised ISM in NGC 7793 with MUSE/AO, at a spatial resolution of $\sim$ 10 pc. The data are complemented with young star clusters (YSCs), O stars and GMCs observed with HST and ALMA. Using a strong-line method, we find a median $12 + \log(O/H) \sim 8.37$ with a scatter of 0.25 dex, in agreement with previous estimates. The abundance map is rich in substructures, surrounding clusters and massive stars, although clear degeneracies with photoionisation are present. We determine the observed total amount of ionising photons, $Q(H^0)$, from the extinction corrected H$\alpha$ luminosity, and compare it to the expected $Q(H^0)$ obtained by summing the contributions of YSCs and massive stars, to obtain an escape fraction ($f_{esc}$). Overall, we find $f_{esc, HII} = 0.67_{-0.12}^{+0.08}$ for the population of HII regions. We also conclude that the sources of ionisation observed within the FoV are more than sufficient to explain the amount of diffuse ionised gas observed in this region of the galaxy. In general, we find that YSCs located in HII regions have a higher probability to be younger, less massive, and to emit a higher number of ionising photons than clusters in the rest of the field. Finally, we study the optical depth of the regions traced by [SII]/[OIII], finding no systematic trend between the resulting ionisation structure and $f_{esc}$. Understanding the escape of ionizing (Lyman continuum) photons from galaxies is vital for determining how galaxies contributed to reionization in the early universe. While directly detecting Lyman continuum from high redshift galaxies is impossible due to the intergalactic medium, low redshift galaxies in principle offer this possibility, but requirie observations from space. The first local galaxy for which Lyman continuum escape was found is Haro11 , a luminous blue compact galaxy at z=0.02, where observations with the FUSE satellite revealed an escape fraction of 3.3 %. However the FUSE aperture covers the entire galaxy, and it is not clear from where the Lyman continuum is leaking out. Here we utilize HST/COS spectroscopy in the wavelength range 1100-1700 A of the three knots (A, B, and C) of Haro11 to study the presence of Ly-$\alpha$ emission and the properties of intervening gas. We find that all knots have bright Ly-$\alpha$ emission. UV absorption lines, originating in the neutral interstellar medium, as well as lines probing the ionized medium, are seen extending to blue shifted velocities of 500 km/s in all three knots, demonstrating the presence of an outflowing multiphase medium. We find that knots A and B have large covering fractions of neutral gas, making LyC escape along these sightlines improbable, while knot C has a much lower covering fraction ($\lesssim50$%). Knot C also has the the highest Ly-$\alpha$ escape fraction and we conclude that it is the most likely source of the escaping Lyman continuum detected in Haro11., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Multi-wavelength images from the farUV (~0.15 micron) to the sub-millimeter of the central region of the galaxy NGC 3351 are analyzed to constrain its stellar populations and dust attenuation. Despite hosting a ~1 kpc circumnuclear starburst ring, NGC 3351 deviates from the IRX-beta relation, the relation between the infrared-to-UV luminosity ratio and the UV continuum slope (beta) that other starburst galaxies follow. To understand the reason for the deviation, we leverage the high angular resolution of archival nearUV-to-nearIR HST images to divide the ring into ~60-180 pc size regions and model each individually. We find that the UV slope of the combined intrinsic (dust-free) stellar populations in the central region is redder than what is expected for a young model population. This is due to the region's complex star formation history, which boosts the nearUV emission relative to the farUV. The resulting net attenuation curve has a UV slope that lies between those of the starburst attenuation curve (Calzetti et al. 2000) and the Small Magellanic Cloud extinction curve; the total-to-selective attenuation value, R'(V)=4.93, is larger than both. As found for other star-forming galaxies, the stellar continuum of NGC 3351 is less attenuated than the ionized gas, with E(B-V)_{star}=0.40 E(B-V)_{gas}. The combination of the `red' intrinsic stellar population and the new attenuation curve fully accounts for the location of the central region of NGC 3351 on the IRX-beta diagram. Thus, the observed characteristics result from the complex mixture of stellar populations and dust column densities in the circumnuclear region. We carry out a comparative analysis of the metallicities from the stellar, neutral-gas, and ionized-gas components in the metal-rich spiral galaxy M83. We analyze spectroscopic observations taken with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) and the Very Large Telescope (VLT). We detect a clear depletion of the HI gas, as observed from the HI column densities in the nuclear region of this spiral galaxy. We find column densities of log[$N$(HI) cm$^{-2}$] $<$ 20.0 at galactocentric distances of $<$ 0.18 kpc, in contrast to column densities of log[$N$(HI) cm$^{-2}$] $\sim$ 21.0 in the galactic disk, a trend observed in other nearby spiral galaxies. We measure a metallicity gradient of $-$0.03 $\pm$ 0.01 dex kpc$^{-1}$ for the ionized gas, comparable to the metallicity gradient of a local benchmark of 49 nearby star-forming galaxies of $-$0.026 $\pm$ 0.002 dex kpc$^{-1}$. Our co-spatial metallicity comparison of the multi-phase gas and stellar populations shows excellent agreement outside of the nucleus of the galaxy hinting at a scenario where the mixing of newly synthesized metals from the most massive stars in the star clusters takes longer than their lifetimes ($\sim$10 Myr). Finally, our work shows that caution must be taken when studying the metallicity gradient of the neutral-gas component in star-forming galaxies, since this can be strongly biased, as these environments can be dominated by molecular gas. We present a machine learning (ML) pipeline to identify star clusters in the multi{color images of nearby galaxies, from observations obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope as part of the Treasury Project LEGUS (Legacy ExtraGalactic Ultraviolet Survey). StarcNet (STAR Cluster classification NETwork) is a multi-scale convolutional neural network (CNN) which achieves an accuracy of 68.6% (4 classes)/86.0% (2 classes: cluster/non-cluster) for star cluster classification in the images of the LEGUS galaxies, nearly matching human expert performance. We test the performance of StarcNet by applying pre-trained CNN model to galaxies not included in the training set, finding accuracies similar to the reference one. We test the effect of StarcNet predictions on the inferred cluster properties by comparing multi-color luminosity functions and mass-age plots from catalogs produced by StarcNet and by human-labeling; distributions in luminosity, color, and physical characteristics of star clusters are similar for the human and ML classified samples. There are two advantages to the ML approach: (1) reproducibility of the classifications: the ML algorithm's biases are fixed and can be measured for subsequent analysis; and (2) speed of classification: the algorithm requires minutes for tasks that humans require weeks to months to perform. By achieving comparable accuracy to human classifiers, StarcNet will enable extending classifications to a larger number of candidate samples than currently available, thus increasing significantly the statistics for cluster studies.

The CIII]1909 (hereafter, C III]) line is the strongest ultraviolet emission line after Ly$\alpha$ and is therefore of interest to high redshift studies of star-forming (SF) galaxies near the epoch of reionization. It is thought that C III] emission is strongest in galaxies with subsolar metallicity and low mass, however, spectral observations of numerous such galaxies at high and low redshift produce inconclusive or even contradictory results. We present the first ever C III ] imaging, obtained with HST/STIS for the low-redshift SF galaxy Haro 11. Cluster parameters like stellar mass, dust fraction and dust attenuation, and ionization parameter, obtained through spectral energy distribution fitting, show no correlation with the CIII] equivalent width (EW), which may be due to a combination of the limitation of the models and the age-homogeneity of the cluster population. Comparing the ratio of C III] emission line flux from individual clusters to that of H$\alpha$, [O III], and [O II] we find that the clusters with the highest EW(C III]) can be reconciled only with Cloudy models with an extremely high C/O ratio of $\ge$ 1.4(C/O)$_\odot$ for an ionizing population of single stars, binary stars, or a mixture of binary stars and active galactic nuclei. Given the point-like nature of strong C III], the integrated total strength of EW(C III]) becomes dependent on the morphology of the galaxy, which would explain the large scatter in EW(C III]) strengths, observed in galaxies with otherwise similar SF properties, and of similarly low metallicity and stellar mass., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Molecular clouds are a fundamental ingredient of galaxies: they are the channels that transform the diffuse gas into stars. The detailed process of how they do it is not completely understood. We review the current knowledge of molecular clouds and their substructure from scales $\sim~$1~kpc down to the filament and core scale. We first review the mechanisms of cloud formation from the warm diffuse interstellar medium down to the cold and dense molecular clouds, the process of molecule formation and the role of the thermal and gravitational instabilities. We also discuss the main physical mechanisms through which clouds gather their mass, and note that all of them may have a role at various stages of the process. In order to understand the dynamics of clouds we then give a critical review of the widely used virial theorem, and its relation to the measurable properties of molecular clouds. Since these properties are the tools we have for understanding the dynamical state of clouds, we critically analyse them. Star clusters are fundamental units of stellar feedback and unique tracers of their host galactic properties. In this review, we will first focus on their constituents, i.e.\ detailed insight into their stellar populations and their surrounding ionised, warm, neutral, and molecular gas. We, then, move beyond the Local Group to review star cluster populations at various evolutionary stages, and in diverse galactic environmental conditions accessible in the local Universe. At high redshift, where conditions for cluster formation and evolution are more extreme, we are only able to observe the integrated light of a handful of objects that we believe will become globular clusters. We therefore discuss how numerical and analytical methods, informed by the observed properties of cluster populations in the local Universe, are used to develop sophisticated simulations potentially capable of disentangling the genetic map of galaxy formation and assembly that is carried by globular cluster populations., Comment: Final published version. 61 pages, 10 figures. We present a new catalog and results for the cluster system of the starburst galaxy NGC 4449 based on multi-band imaging observations taken as part of the LEGUS and Halpha-LEGUS surveys. We improve the spectral energy fitting method used to estimate cluster ages and find that the results, particularly for older clusters, are in better agreement with those from spectroscopy. The inclusion of Halpha measurements, the role of stochasticity for low mass clusters, the assumptions about reddening, and the choices of SSP model and metallicity all have important impacts on the age-dating of clusters. A comparison with ages derived from stellar color-magnitude diagrams for partially resolved clusters shows reasonable agreement, but large scatter in some cases. The fraction of light found in clusters relative to the total light (i.e., T_L) in the U, B, and V filters in 25 different ~kpc-size regions throughout NGC 4449 correlates with both the specific Region Luminosity, R_L, and the dominant age of the underlying stellar population in each region. The observed cluster age distribution is found to decline over time as dN/dt ~ t^g, with g=-0.85+/-0.15, independent of cluster mass, and is consistent with strong, early cluster disruption. The mass functions of the clusters can be described by a power law with dN/dM ~ M^b and b=-1.86+/-0.2, independent of cluster age. The mass and age distributions are quite resilient to differences in age-dating methods. There is tentative evidence for a factor of 2-3 enhancement in both the star and cluster formation rate ~100 - 300 Myr ago, indicating that cluster formation tracks star formation generally. The enhancement is probably associated with an earlier interaction event.

Giant molecular clouds (GMCs) and their stellar offspring are the building blocks of galaxies. The physical characteristics of GMCs and their evolution are tightly connected to galaxy evolution. The macroscopic properties of the interstellar medium propagate into the properties of GMCs condensing out of it, with correlations between e.g. the galactic and GMC scale gas pressures, surface densities and volume densities. That way, the galactic environment sets the initial conditions for star formation within GMCs. After the onset of massive star formation, stellar feedback from e.g. photoionisation, stellar winds, and supernovae eventually contributes to dispersing the parent cloud, depositing energy, momentum and metals into the surrounding medium, thereby changing the properties of galaxies. This cycling of matter between gas and stars, governed by star formation and feedback, is therefore a major driver of galaxy evolution. Much of the recent debate has focused on the durations of the various evolutionary phases that constitute this cycle in galaxies, and what these can teach us about the physical mechanisms driving the cycle.
