Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the association between Adult Day Health Center (ADHC) participation and health-related quality of life. Design and Methods: Case-controlled prospective study utilizing the Medical Outcomes Survey Form 36 (SF-36) to compare newly enrolled participants from 16 ADHC programs with comparable community-dwelling older adults who did not attend an ADHC. Assessments were conducted at study enrollment, 6 and 12 months. Results: ADHC participants (n = 57) and comparison group subjects (n = 67) were similar at baseline in age, ethnic diversity, medical conditions, depression, cognition, immigration history, education, income, and marital status. Significantly more comparison group subjects lived alone (p = .002). One year after enrollment, the SF-36 domains role physical and role emotional improved significantly. Adjusted role physical scores for ADHC participants improved (23 vs. 36) but declined for the comparison group (38 vs. 26, time by group interaction p = .01), and role emotional scores improved for ADHC participants (62 vs.70) but declined for the comparison group (65 vs. 48, time by group interaction p = .02). Secondary analyses revealed that changes in daily physical functioning, depressed affect, or cognitive functioning did not explain the improvements found in role physical and role emotional scores for ADHC participants. No significant differences in trends for the 2 groups occurred for the SF-36 domains physical functioning, social functioning, and mental health. Implications: ADHC participation may enhance older adults’ quality of life. Quality of life may be a key measure to inform care planning, program improvement, and policy development of ADHC. The article presents a study on the assessment of pre- and post-person-centered care (PCC) activity programs in an adult and demetia day center in Midwestern areas. It mentions that the calendars for pre- and post-PCC activity programs were qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed through mixed methods. Findings showed that post-PCC activity programming is more person-centered compared to pre-PCC activity program. However, the PCC model was found to be rare in adult and dementia day center.

This article describes a multimethod intrinsic case study of environmental fit--as conceptualized by Lawton--in an adult day facility through assessing the relationship between competence and interpreted place rules as an indicator of consensually understood environmental press and observable affect as a measurable outcome. This research study of an adult day care serving people experiencing dementia suggests that Canter's concept of place rules may be conceptualized as a consensual aspect of environmental press, interpreted largely through the observation of patterns of activity within a given physical setting. The congruence between the purposes that underlie these rules and those sought by participants is assessed through the aggregation of affect observations. The findings suggest that the degree of fit between the participants and their environmental milieu varies for each of four distinct groupings of participants. This article reports the results of a 1998 pilot study involving 26 caregivers that have relatives suffering form some type of dementia. The purpose of the study is to determine if an adult day program that speicalizes in helping those afflicted with dementia care serve as a effective way of providing respite care to caregivers, reducing reported levels of direct responsibility and care. According to sutdy results, adult day program alone was not found to be a complete form of respite; however, over-all caregiver satisfaction was strong and the adults day program was viewed as a positive way to provide partial respite to caregivers. An analysis of the component costs of adult day care (ADC) programs in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania indicates widely varying experiences in terms of fiscal and contractual administrative arrangements. Medical model ADC, program-funded services, and those agencies performing their own client assessments reported higher client per clients than the social model, slot-funded, and non-ADC assessed programs. For-profits displayed cost characteristics similar to their not-for-profit counterparts. Medical and slot-funded programs more frequently turned to multiple sources for budget supplementation. The article discusses extramural institutions for psychiatry and neurology in Klosterneuburg, Austria. In particular, services offered include counseling services, a day care center for mentally handicapped adults, and a transitional care center offering therapeutic services.
