This study uses a novel measure to describe school refusal (SR) behavior among 91 U.S. adolescents ages 13 to 18 years old in the month leading up to a partial hospitalization program (PHP) admission. Youth exhibit a range of SR behaviors. Three fourths (77%) reported missing at least two full days of school and nearly one third (29%) reported being absent from school the entire month before PHP admission. Among youth who reported attending school, 36% reported leaving school early, 55% reported leaving the classroom, and 59% reported arriving late to school "at least" "a little" or 2 days in the month prior to PHP admission. Youth rarely shared that they spend time with friends or doing homework while absent from school. In addition, agreement between caregivers and youth on the extent to which youth are struggling with school attendance and how youth spend their time while out of school was low to moderate (r = 0.14-0.52). Results suggest that the School Interference Questionnaire (SIQ) can complement existing SR instruments to offer descriptive information about the frequency and type of SR behavior, perceived impact, and targets of intervention by identifying potential positive and negative reinforcers.

The modification of the ACEP cycle is a pedagogical strategy consisting of four components: (A) Activities. (C) Classroom discussion. (E) Exercises. (P) Performance. The application of ACEP cycle modifications is used as a strategy to improve writing skills. This is the primary focus to consider in improving writing skills. The purpose of this study was to evaluate how effective the process of learning writing skills was by applying ACEP cycle modifications. This study used a mixed-methods approach. At the qualitative stage, an explanatory description design strategy is applied to collect comprehensive and in-depth information about the learning model applied by the teacher in the classroom. A pre- and post-test control group design is used in the quantitative stage. The average score of students using the ACEP cycle modification was 82.64, higher than that of students who studied under the demonstration learning model which was 80.03. This finding is reinforced by the result of the significance coefficient = 0.006 < 0.05 so H0 is rejected. Thus, there is a difference in average student learning outcomes between the modification of the ACEP cycle and the demonstration learning model. ACEP cycle modification has practical implications for writing skills. First, it can easily identify the initial condition of students' writing skills. Second, ACEP cycle modification allows teachers to better understand how students build an understanding of writing concepts. Third, students can actively participate in the learning process and fourth, teachers can observe the construction stage and measure student progress more accurately.

Adolescents who have been diagnosed with disabilities constitute a significant portion of the school population in the United States. For example, the National Survey of Children's Health identified one in four children ages 12 to 17 as having special healthcare needs in 2019 (Data Resource Center for Child and Adolescent Health, n.d.). In the school setting, adolescents with disabilities often have an individualized educational program (IEP). Mandated by the Individuals with Disabilities Educational Act (IDEA) of 2004, an IEP is an educational document that describes a child's disability, along with specific supports a child will receive in school to help achieve optimum educational and developmental success (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, 2004). Adolescents with disabilities demonstrate a higher risk for emotional distress compared to age-matched peers (Barnes et al., 2010; Emerson et al., 2007; Gilmore et al., 2013; Stein et al., 2011; Rockett, 2021; Lal et al., 2022). A large body of research has investigated the role of protective factors in decreasing the level of emotional distress among adolescents (Bernat et al., 2006; Resnick et al., 1997). Many protective factors have been identified, including protective home environments, adequate sleep (So et al., 2021), strong parental or other adult relationships (Sieving et al., 2017), and involvement in organized activities, such as sports (Brosnahan et al., 2004; Johnson & Taliaferro, 2011; Boelens et al., 2021). Although a higher risk of co-occurring mental health conditions among adolescents with disabilities and a positive benefit of activity involvement are both well-recognized in the literature, few studies have evaluated the possible overlap between these two areas. The goal of the current study, therefore, is to examine the associations between having an IEP and emotional distress among adolescents and the potential protective association of organized activity involvement on emotional distress symptoms among adolescents with an IEP.

The study aimed to find out which differences and similarities emerge in the self-concepts of early and late adolescents and young, middle-aged, and older adults. A total of 822 participants, including 530 adolescents aged 9-19 (over 50% were girls) and 292 adults aged 20-71 (over 80% were women), from Estonia provided their spontaneous self-descriptions. Early adolescents described their preferences, appearance, family, peers, and peripheral attributes more frequently and traits, identity, and global attributes less frequently than other age groups. Late adolescents' self-descriptions included significantly more traits and fewer social roles, identity, and family mentions than those of adults. The three adult groups were similar in the use of different attributes to describe themselves. Overall, the study suggests that early adolescents describe themselves mainly through concrete, objective attributes, late adolescents through abstract psychological attributes, and adults through social-psychological attributes.

This article is concerned with an institutional initiative designed to encourage the development of an outreach culture which can support fairer, more equal, access to higher education (HE) in India. The initiative constituted the final impact phase of a 5-year Fair Chance Foundation (FCF) research project (2017-2022) which explored gendered pathways to fair access to HE in the northern Indian state of Haryana. We present the methodology used to prepare a toolkit, named an Outreach Activity Resource (OAR), which enabled staff in government colleges in Haryana to plan and conduct pilot 'taster days'. The article provides an assessment of the outcome of these events. It argues that a practitioner as researcher methodology and a collaborative 'bottom up' research approach provide the basis for the development of contextually appropriate outreach activities to support fairer, more equal, access to higher education (HE). We argue that the adoption of 'top down' initiatives, in very different economic, social and cultural contexts to the those where they were originated, may fail to address the way in which the local 'problem' presents itself and may hinder the development of a contextually informed outreach culture which will support fairer, more equal access to HE. In contrast, initiatives such as the one presented here can contribute essential locally informed expertise, built on contextually informed research, to national and international policy making in relation to widening access to HE in an era in which massification is extending across the globe.

Family attitudes and beliefs around digital technologies are a key factor in young children's digital habits in the home. This study involved conducting interviews with 46 families of children under 6 years of age to understand how parental perceptions determine the screen use of young children in terms of activities, content, and time. The aim is to provide knowledge for an in-depth reflection on media management in the home. A descriptive, quantitative study was designed, based on a questionnaire survey model to interview families. The results show few differences between the most positive and the most negative family perceptions of children's use of ICTs. The complexity of the analysis of parental digital education strategies and support systems is evident. The perceptions of families are based on a balance that avoids extremes, are shrouded in contradictions, and are regulated according to the needs of the context. This requires consideration of all the factors that influence children's digital habits: the socioeconomic context of families, parental digital habits, family perceptions, and the parental digital mediation strategies used.

International students in Australia risk financial insecurity and as a result, may make suboptimal health decisions. Limited research has explored the experiences of international students' health-related financial decision making. In-depth interviews were conducted with 31 international students to explore how financial situation influences their decisions in Australia. Data were thematically analysed. Findings highlight that limited income can impact overall wellbeing and health-related decision making. When making financial health-related decisions, participants prioritised urgent health needs and education. Participants who perceived their financial situation limited were less willing to spend money on mental health services, social activities, and food. This study suggests that students may consider the long-term financial benefits of studying abroad when making decisions, but they do not consider the long-term health implications of stress and wellbeing. Enabling students to improve their financial situation and lower their expenses could enhance wellbeing and facilitate health-related decision making.

Enterprise challenges are teaching activities that allow students to develop and pitch a creative idea in response to a real-life challenge, usually posed by a charitable organisation. Students work in teams to develop their ideas and draw on their subject knowledge, as well as entrepreneurial processes, to articulate their product or service that addresses the challenge. These activities have the potential to enhance psychological literacy as they provide an opportunity to utilise psychological knowledge and skills in novel and unfamiliar ways and urges students to find creative solutions to societal problems. This article presents the rationale and structure to design an enterprise challenge in psychology teaching and uses two case studies to show diverse ways of delivering these teaching events. Evaluation data from six previous challenges show that students self-rate their perceived psychological literacy and entrepreneurial orientation higher after having participated in an enterprise challenge. These teaching activities present a propitious way of enhancing psychological literacy in the curriculum and supporting students on their journey to develop as global citizens.

Background: Speech and language therapists (SLTs) and care home activities staff play key roles in managing and supporting the communication needs of older residents in care homes. However, the current practice and perspectives of these two professions in the United Kingdom has not been examined. Aims: To investigate the practice patterns and views of SLTs and activities staff working in UK care homes for older adults in relation to residents' communication needs. Methods and Procedures: Two online surveys, with 63 questions (SLT survey) and 46 questions (activities staff survey) in total, were created using the online platform Qualtrics. Participants were asked to consider their routine practice before COVID-19. Results were analysed using descriptive statistics and qualitative content analysis. Outcomes and Results: A total of 116 valid responses were received from SLTs and 29 valid responses from activities staff. A high level of communication needs in care homes was reported by both participant groups, as was insufficient time and resources and lack of managerial encouragement in this area. SLTs reported that the majority of referrals to their service from care homes was for swallowing needs (70%). Cognitive communication difficulty was the most commonly reported communication need by SLTs (65%). Most SLTs (73%-87%) provided some level of communication intervention and considered management of residents' communication needs to be both part of the SLT role and a good investment of their time. Lack of confidence setting goals and providing direct intervention for communication needs was reported, with 25% feeling stressed at the thought of this. The main themes from free text responses about SLT service improvement were increased staff training, funding (of resources and specialist posts) and changes to service provision (referral criteria and accessibility/awareness of SLT service). Hearing impairment was the communication need most commonly reported by activities staff (43%). Participants demonstrated relatively high awareness of communication difficulty in residents and reported high levels of knowledge and confidence identifying and supporting residents' communication. Most (79%-89%) considered identifying and supporting the communication needs of residents to be part of their role and expressed interest in receiving further training in communication support. The reported activities staff data set may be positively biased. Conclusions and Implications: SLTs and activities staff were highly motivated to support the communication needs of care home residents. Increased training, time and resources dedicated to managing the communication needs of residents emerged as opportunities for service improvement across both data sets.

Background: Group norms in engineering education groupwork are usually negotiated in an implicit and often unequal manner. Although it is regularly suggested that student groups can function better if norm negotiations are, instead, made explicit, the social dynamics of group norm exercises have remained underexplored. Purpose: We investigate how students negotiate group norms in group norm exercises, including the different understandings of groupwork that they construct and draw from to facilitate their negotiations. Method: We recorded and analyzed a sequence of three group norm exercises focused on developing a team charter, with seven participating student groups. Drawing on framing theory, we study negotiation sequences in terms of framing practices, and understandings of groupwork in terms of activity frames. Results: Our findings suggest that group norm exercises can help students to coordinate their expectations and transform previously established norms. However, they may also be approached in such a way that students are discouraged from questioning established group norms, instead resolving disagreement by simply rejecting alternative perspectives. We introduce the term "group development norms" to explain these dynamics, showing that the question of how to develop group norms is in itself a subject for negotiation. Conclusions: Providing a forum and process is neither enough to ensure reflective and equitable negotiations nor transparent and inclusive group norms. To avoid that group norm exercises simply reaffirm dominant norms, students should be provided with explicit negotiation strategies and, ideally, direct facilitation.

Several studies report on lower quality of life for autistic people when compared to non-autistic people. However, there are ongoing discussions about the conceptualization of quality of life for the autistic population. This qualitative study investigated self-perceived quality of life in the context of autistic young adults' everyday lives. Participants (age range 21-29 years) were recruited from a 10-year follow-up study, Lillehammer Neurodevelopmental Follow-up Study, all diagnosed in childhood and adolescence. Fourteen individual in-depth interviews were conducted. When asked about what was important for having a good quality of life, our autistic participants described relationships to people and pets as important, as well as having meaningful activities. Specific interests had guided many to their choice of both academic and work career. Many also described obstacles in their environment that had influenced their quality of life negatively, such as being misunderstood by teachers and other professionals, being bullied, and sensory and emotional overload. Our findings indicate that those in supportive roles should provide help with establishing connections to activities and people/animals, as this seems to be essential for creating a good quality of life. Taking advantage of passions and interests can create opportunities for autistic people. Findings suggest that future research should address the communication barriers between autistic people and professionals that can lead to misunderstandings.

This systematic review evaluated interventions and relevant outcomes for health promotion and obesity prevention among children and adolescents with developmental disabilities (DD). Twenty-one studies including randomized control trials (n= 9) and quasi-experimental studies (n=12) published between 2010 and 2021 met inclusion criteria related to participant characteristics, intervention type, and child obesity-related outcomes. Five types of intervention programs were identified: aerobic and strength training, sport-based physical activity, aquatic exercise, active video gaming, and diet and lifestyle. Whereas analysis of intervention outcomes, efficacy, and study rigor showed mixed results and weak evidence of effective interventions, this review identified gaps in the literature, promising strategies for addressing obesity in children with DD, and implications for practice and future research.

Expectancy-value models assume that task values play an important role in engaging successfully with the learning content. However, teacher education students in mathematics only value tasks that deal with university mathematics to a low degree. Offering students profession-related tasks that uncover the connection between university mathematics and school mathematics might help increase students' value beliefs and effort and decrease costs. Based on Eccles and Wigfield's (2020) situated expectancy-value theory and using a sample of 133 teacher education students, we investigate whether offering profession-related tasks affects task values, costs, and effort for students with different levels of interest in school mathematics. In a within-subject design, students rated their task values, costs, and effort to solve seven mathematical tasks from number theory, which were either a profession-related task or a regular task with equal demands regarding the intended mathematical activities. Students reported higher utility value for their professional life, higher intrinsic value, and lower costs regarding profession-related tasks. No main effects were found for students' effort. However, students with a higher interest in school mathematics reported higher effort concerning profession-related tasks than regular tasks. On the theoretical level, our findings contribute to the discussion of the interplay between personal (i.e. interest) and task-specific factors (i.e. relation to future profession) for task values, costs, and effort in university mathematics. One important practical implication of our study is the recommendation to include profession-related tasks in university mathematics courses for teacher education students.

This study was conducted within the scope of the Positive Schools Project to shed light on teachers' perspectives on reflecting positive thinking in their own branches and practices in the teaching environment. Twenty-four teachers who received training within the scope of the project and agreed to participate in the study voluntarily were included in the study. Phenomenology was used as the research design. The content analysis was used to analyze the data obtained through interviews during the research process. Based on the results of the analyses performed, tables describing the themes, sub-themes, and codes were created, and explanations representing the views of the teachers were provided. The findings of the study revealed that teachers from all levels of education, from pre-school to upper secondary school, think that there is a need for activities on positive thinking and that they can transfer the understanding of positive thinking to their branches. When the views of teachers on the need for activities to be developed within the scope of positive thinking for their students were examined, the themes of difficulties in adaptation to school, the trauma process, and the need for effective communication-interaction emerged. Teachers suggested activities for self-awareness, unity awareness, and awareness of contribution within the scope of positive thinking in schools. In addition to the views of teachers on positive thinking, the study points to some negative situations that teachers have observed in their students. These negative situations include dysfunctional self-confidence, dissatisfaction with possessions, non-functional goals or goals for saving the day, and difficulties in purposeful planning.

Purpose: Pre-service teachers, who are practising teachers are exposed to numerous technical skills at university. Studies on the use of technology on pre-service teachers' self-confidence are still in their infancy, despite the abundance of studies addressing pre-service teachers' intention to utilise technology in online learning. Therefore, this study seeks to investigate pre-service teachers' use of technology and their confidence in handling online classes effectively. Methodology: A survey was conducted on 93 teachers at two randomly selected universities in Malaysia during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic (March-May 2020) through online data collection. A five-point Likert scale-adapted questionnaire on preservice teachers' perceptions of technology use, effort, and confidence was administered to the respondents. The questionnaire was validated by three experts and data were analysed empirically using structural equation modelling-partial least-squares analysis. Findings: According to the study's findings, pre-service teachers held that technology was a great tool for online instruction and that peer contact helped them broaden their understanding about teaching. Despite this, there was no significant correlation between the use of technology and pre-service teachers' self-confidence. Nevertheless, the effort factor was found to mediate between pre-service teachers' confidence and technology. Significance: The results of this study provide important findings; that pre-service teachers could train their minds to put forth specific effort, such as increasing their interpersonal experience to support and enhance their online teaching. This in turn could help pre-service teachers in preparing to embark on technology-related activities to enable them to work with students more frequently and to support and enhance online education.

This research was prepared in order to examine the attitudes of social studies teacher candidates towards renewable energy sources in terms of various variables. Convenient sampling, one of the purposeful sampling methods, was preferred in the research and the sample group of the research consists of 250 teacher candidates, who are the last level students of universities who teach social studies. In the research, the data were collected by taking the necessary permissions and transferring the scale used to the online environment, taking into account the cost and economic conditions. The Attitude Scale Towards Renewable Energy Sources developed by T. Günes, K. Alat, and A. I. C. Gözüm, was used after obtaining the necessary permissions. In addition, the demographic information form prepared by taking the necessary expert opinion within the scope of this research was used as a data collection tool in the research. The Attitude Scale Towards Renewable Energy Sources used in the research was prepared in a 5-point Likert type consisting of 26 items. The causal comparison design, which is among the quantitative methods, was preferred in the research. The data obtained in the study were analyzed using independent groups t-test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA).

This scholarship-to-practice paper examines the importance of engagement among college students and highlights a partnership between two online institutions -- a two-year community college and a university -- dedicated to fostering diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Guiding this work is the premise that higher education should be accessible to all who wish to pursue it, and that two institutions of higher education on opposite sides of the country can work together to share the stories and experiences of their students. The authors applied literature relating to belonging, engaging in campus activities, and the importance of sharing one's story to a partnership involving two different institutions and webinar discussions featuring underrepresented students.

Mindfulness is an important metric of human functioning that has been a topic of cultural and academic attention over the past 30 years (Spijkerman et al., 2016) and can help to elevate one's awareness and internal psychological experience (Wielgosz et al., 2019). To date, there remains an absence of literature examining perceptions of mindfulness and mindful practices among college students, particularly among Christian students. The purpose of this mixed-methods, exploratory study was to better understand students' perception of mindfulness and assess current mindful practices. The participants (N = 107) were freshmen undergraduate college students enrolled in introductory psychology courses at a private, non-profit Christian university. Students completed a 9-question researcher-developed Mindfulness Awareness, Perception, and Practices questionnaire to assess perceptions and practices. Results of the thematic analysis revealed that approximately half of the students had a limited understanding of mindfulness, with several reporting disadvantages. Most students listed prayer as a consistent practice, with a much lesser percentage of students consistently engaging in other mindful activities. Implications for mindfulness education and the promotion of evidence-based methods, particularly among Christian communities, are discussed.

Background: Research into befriending for people with intellectual disabilities is limited. This study aimed to explore the impact, mechanisms of change, and limitations of a befriending scheme for adults with intellectual disabilities and/or autism. Methods: Participants were recruited using convenience sampling. Thirteen individuals with intellectual disabilities and/or autism were interviewed and data thematically analysed. Results: Four themes were generated: 'Something fun for me'; 'A good connection'; 'Increasing independence'; and 'A life less quiet'. Befriending had direct benefits through the activities undertaken and the befriending relationships themselves being fun and reducing isolation. Befriending facilitated belonging, improved access to mainstream activities, and fostered independence by providing safety and support. The importance of shared interests and external support for the relationship was highlighted. Conclusions: Positive outcomes of befriending were found, supporting existing literature and revealing new information from the voices of participants with intellectual disabilities themselves.

Purpose: The purpose of the current study was to assess dual-task interference (i.e., changes between the dual-task and baseline condition) in a listening effort dual-task paradigm in normal-hearing (NH) adults, hearing aid (HA) users, and cochlear implant (CI) users. Method: Three groups of 31 participants were included: (a) NH adults, (b) HA users, and (c) CI users. The dual-task paradigm consisted of a primary speech understanding task in a quiet condition, and a favorable and unfavorable noise condition, and a secondary visual memory task. Dual-task interference was calculated for both tasks, and participants were classified based on their patterns of interference. Descriptive analyses were established and differences between the three groups were examined. Results: The descriptive results showed varying patterns of dual-task interference between the three listening conditions. Most participants showed the pattern of visual memory interference (i.e., worse results for the secondary task in the dual-task condition and no difference for the primary task) in the quiet condition, whereas the pattern of speech understanding priority trade-off (i.e., worse results for the secondary task in the dual-task condition and better results for the primary task) was most prominent in the unfavorable noise condition. Particularly, in HA and CI users, this shift was seen. However, the patterns of dual-task interference were not statistically different between the three groups. Conclusions: Results of this study may provide additional insight into the interpretation of dual-task paradigms for measuring listening effort in diverse participant groups. It highlights the importance of considering both the primary and secondary tasks for accurate interpretation of results.

Learning scientists have historically been interested in understanding how learning happens and in creating innovations to facilitate learning in real-world situations. Recently, the field has recognized that advancing standalone innovations is not enough to address systemic problems in education; instead, the focus must be broadened to sustain these innovations. Drawing on an interdisciplinary body of literature on infrastructure, this paper presents a framework--the IMPROV framework--that offers theoretical, methodological, and practical tools for infrastructuring innovations in the learning sciences. Infrastructuring can be defined as the ongoing process of creating functional infrastructures for activities in a particular context. I describe six inter-connected areas of infrastructuring to highlight ways that learning designers and researchers could surface existing infrastructures, facilitate coherence-making negotiation activities, engage practitioners in collaborative design, and continuously evaluate infrastructuring activities. It is hoped that such advances will increase the relevance and sustainability of innovations in education and provide infrastructure to further improve them.

This qualitative study draws from learning ecologies as a framework of analysis in order to explore the activities, resources and relationships practised by 25 Spanish faculty members who teach in the area of Education. Their students nominated them as inclusive faculty. Individual, semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted. The results show that the activities, resources and relationships are multiple, diverse and learner-centred. This paper concludes that teaching student teachers involve being consistent and acting as a role model, by being coherent and an inclusive faculty in the university classes. These faculty voices provide recommendations on how universities should teach with a view to promote lifelong learning in which all students feel welcome.

Background: People with intellectual/intellectual and physical disabilities frequently use day-service centres, an array of services that involve the provision of care and social activities during the daytime and offer homebound people with disabilities opportunities to live in their communities. While nurses working at day-service centres for people with disabilities are expected to promote service-users' health, little research has focused on this area. Nurses' relationships with service-users of day-service centres have not been sufficiently investigated regarding how their interactions determine service-users' specific activities and daily lives within such facilities. This study sought to address this research gap. Methods: We conducted a qualitative descriptive study with six nurses working at day-service centres located in Tohoku region, Japan. Six participants were interviewed 16 times. The psychological-phenomenological method developed by Amedeo Giorgi was used as the model for data analysis. Findings: The analysis generated five themes. First, nurses show interest in service-users by 'continuing to show interest' and by 'trying to understand the service-users from the perspective of what they can do'. Additionally, the nurses ensure that service-users enjoy their time in the facility by 'supporting enjoyment through nursing and medical care', 'stabilising feelings' and 'creating an environment conducive to everyone's comfort'. Conclusions: Nurses working at day-service centres for people with intellectual/intellectual and physical disabilities provide support for social participation while maintaining the service-users' mental and physical health. Thus, these nurses support enjoyment among service-users from the nursing and medical care aspect; they also devise ways for service-users to interact and adjust to the environment to improve service-users' comfort at day-service centres. Furthermore, participation in daytime activities at day-service centres indicated that nurses are interested in service-users' activities, and they perceive service-users as positive individuals.

Background: Shared Lives (adult placement) is a model of community-based support where an adult who needs support and/or accommodation moves into or regularly visits the home of an approved Shared Lives carer. It is an established but small-scale service used mainly by adults with learning disabilities. However, little research has been conducted about whether and in what ways this model can support people to live well. Method: This article presents findings from outcome measures focused on well-being for a sample of 39 people supported by Shared Lives in England. Fifteen semistructured interviews were also conducted by peer/coresearchers to supplement the quantitative data. Data collection took place between June 2017 and September 2018. Findings: Findings indicated that people using Shared Lives generally had good outcomes across all of the measures. All of those interviewed identified areas of their life where Shared Lives had made a positive difference, particularly with relationships and activities. Conclusions: Limitations to the research mean that more work is needed to fully understand the role Shared Lives plays in supporting people to live well and in comparison to other forms of community support.

This qualitative study explored mothers' and fathers' perspectives on children's play through semi-structured interviews. Fifteen fathers and 19 mothers were interviewed using open-ended questions. Interviews were audio-recorded and analyzed using open coding. Several themes emerged related to the definition of play, use of play, play activities, and positive and negative aspects of play. Mothers mentioned (1) "play as a learning and teaching tool," (2) "play as a soothing and relaxing way to improve children's self-regulation," and (3) "concerns about their children imitating bad behaviors and injuring themselves during play." In contrast, fathers (1) "engaged in more physical play (including rough and tumble play)," (2) "regarded screen time play more positively," (3) "emphasized social learning through play," and (4) "were more concerned about children's socially inappropriate behaviors during play." This study suggests the importance of considering differences in the perceptions of fathers and mothers when engaging children in play activities at home, school, and in the community.

Interest in collaborative concept mapping studies has grown steadily over the years. However, insufficient studies compare collaborative concept mapping with other similarly robust collaborative activities. Another limitation is that existing collaborative concept mapping studies seldom elaborate on the extent of participants' interactions with each other. To address these limitations, this study uses a 2 × 2 factorial design in which collaborative activity (concept mapping vs. summary writing) was crossed with resource distribution (interdependence vs. independence). Participants (n = 428) were assigned to dyads, and the 214 dyads were randomly assigned to one of four conditions. The dependent measures were immediate and delayed retention and transfer, and cognitive load. Results indicated a significant main effect for resource distribution for immediate recall. However, no other significant effects were obtained indicating that the conditions yielded comparable learning outcomes. Theoretical, empirical, and practical implications of the results are discussed, and future research directions are presented.

Objective: This study determined the frequency, reasons for, and side effects of energy drinks (ED) consumption among online students. Participants: Students attending an online university. Methods: Participants were recruited by email and completed a 59-question survey about their prior months ED practices using a combination of validated surveys previously published examining similar constructs in on-campus students. Results: 307 students (age = 32.4 ± 6.5yrs) completed the survey, and 88% reported consuming EDs. Students' reasons for consuming ED included school (p < 0.001), work (p < 0.001), an event/competition (p < 0.001), pick me up (p < 0.001), lack of rest (p < 0.001), more energy (p < 0.001), and staying awake while driving (p < 0.001). Only individuals who consumed >10 ED/month reported side effects of headaches (p = 0.01) and speeding (p = 0.01). Conclusions: In our sample, a majority of the participants reported consuming ED for various daily activities. Only frequent consumers reported side effects suggesting they had become habituated to caffeine since they drank EDs despite experiencing side effects.

This study aiming to compare the effectiveness of Cognitive Orientation to Daily Occupational Performance (CO-OP) and Conductive Education (CE) approaches on motor skills, activity limitation and participation restrictions in children with Down Syndrome (DS). Twelve children were randomly assigned into two groups. Twelve-week CO-OP or CE intervention (period-1) followed by a 12-week washout period. Same interventions were crossed over for another 12 weeks (period-2). The Performance Quality Rating Scale (PQRS), Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) and the Bruininks Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency Second Edition-Brief Form (BOT2-BF) were used for outcome measurements. CO-OP was effective in the improvement of task-specific activity performance, while both approaches have similar effects on the improvement of perceived performance, satisfaction, and motor skills performance.

Student retention is a critical issue for universities, and nearly half of the students who start degree programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) do not complete them. The current study tracks the progress of STEM students taking part in an entry-to-graduation program designed to build community, provide academic and social support, and promote engagement in academically purposeful activities. Although it had no effect on the number of students who changed their major, the program more than doubled the number of students who graduated in their original major. Black or Hispanic students taking part in the program also graduated at twice the rate of comparator students, largely attributable to the success of women in these groups. The results provide needed real-world insights into how to create an equitable environment that promotes the persistence and graduation of students, including those from groups historically underrepresented in STEM.

Increased stress among parents of youth with ASD has been well-documented. However, research on aspects of the parent-child relationship and subsequent links to parenting stress is limited. We assessed parents (N = 511) of youth with ASD to examine relations between parenting stress and parent-child quality time (amount of quality time, shared enjoyment, synchronicity). Elevated parenting stress was associated with less time spent engaging with youth in shared activities and decreased parent and child enjoyment during shared interactions. Parents with elevated stress reported engaging in shared activities and experiencing synchronicity with their child less often than parents below the clinical threshold. Future research should emphasize longitudinal efforts examining the directionality of this relationship to better inform family-focused intervention.

Children's time use is a complex developmental phenomenon in need of a more in-depth, detailed understanding. The present study aimed to provide a comprehensive description of children's everyday lives in middle childhood and examine how different portfolios and patterns of daily activities occurring at home, school, and community are influenced by multilevel ecological factors. Based on cross-sectional, multi-informant data from a sample of Portuguese 3rd and 4th graders (n = 209), this research expands previous literature by providing a mixture of variable- and person-centered analytical approaches to children's time use. Findings indicate that children's everyday lives are characterized by a diversity of participation portfolios which embody multidimensional, heterogeneous, and qualitatively distinct participation patterns. A total of five different time use clusters were found: "less-active studious", "highly-engaged players", "less-involved after-schoolers", "highly-active homebodies", and "sedentary home screeners". Both portfolios and patterns of activities significantly varied as a function of child characteristics, parental education, family functioning and culture, and the environment quality of activity settings. Variations in ecological affordances and constraints may represent different levels of exposure to developmental opportunities. An ecological developmental perspective of children's time use is necessary and useful to enlighten how families, schools, and communities can positively influence children's lives and effectively support their well-being and growth.

The overall interest in the present paper is equal early childhood education (ECE) in terms of educating multilingually. Instead of monoglossic bilingual education directed to some children, or monoglossic monolingual education directed to children despite language background, education for recognising and creating multilingual practices for all children is reasoned in terms of "global early childhood education" (GECE). The reasoning is grounded on a sociocultural understanding of learning, research on holistic multilingual education and the concept of play-responsive teaching. In the paper, a framework with principles for GECE -- ECE characterised by multifaceted language ecology -- is put forward. The principles concerning (i) conditions, (ii) learning contents and (iii) teaching tools are formulated to provide premises for and to be evolved through empirical research. The paper contributes to the contemporary challenge of implementing multilingual teaching approaches. Legitimising multilingual teaching in practice is considered a question for research in collaboration with teachers and professional development.

Quality caregiving practices facilitate early childhood development. This study examined the levels of parents' engagement in caregiving activities with children aged 36-59 months and the socioeconomic and child-rearing environmental factors. A total of 1035 children and their caregivers were analysed using the Vietnam Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey 2014. Multivariate logistic regression was performed separately for each following outcome caregiving activity: reading books, telling stories, singing songs, naming/counting, taking the child outside, and playing with child. Results showed that fathers' engagement levels were substantially lower than the mothers' in all caregiving activities. Reading books and telling stories was among the least frequent activities engaged in by both parents. Results from the logistic regression model showed that parental high education level, richest household wealth, and having adequate learning resources at home were positively associated with parents' engagement in caregiving activities. These findings provide important evidence for promoting positive parental caregiving.

University students' engagement in online activities can impact both internet addiction and academic performance. This research aims to investigate these effects among university students. Using data from the "China College Students Longitudinal Survey" conducted by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences between 2013 and 2018, this study examines the influence of university students' engagement in online activities. With a sample size of 15,102 university students, we explored the relationship between online activity, internet addiction, and academic performance. Employing stratified random sampling, the study investigates sample characteristics, including gender, study level, time spent online, and experiences accessing websites. Academic performance is assessed through six categories, employing descriptive and inferential statistics such as t-tests, ANOVA, stepwise linear regression, and path analysis. The findings indicate significantly high levels of university students' engagement in online activities, accompanied by a high prevalence of internet addiction. Key factors determining university students' engagement, internet addiction, and academic performance include gender, study level, time spent online, and experiences accessing websites beyond the Great Firewall. The study establishes a complex relationship, revealing negative effects of specific online engagements on internet addiction, while the latter influences university students' engagement. Overall, this research contributes valuable insights into the intricate interplay between online behaviors, addiction, and academic performance among Chinese university students, with implications for educational policies and interventions.

This study explored the academic activities of academicians during the COVID-19 pandemic in Nepal. An online questionnaire was used to collect quantitative data from 361 academicians about changes in academic and extracurricular activities. The findings showed that the majority of participants (69% and 72%) agreed that both academic and extracurricular activities, respectively, were adversely affected by the lockdown during the pandemic. The results also showed that the study hours, sleeping hours, and social networking increased while concentration on academic activities decreased during the lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This study aimed to compare the executive functions (EFs) and occupational performance and perceived occupational proficiency (POP) in children with neurodevelopmental disorders. In this study, 72 children diagnosed with cerebral palsy (CP; n = 22), specific learning disabilities (SpLD; n = 26) or attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD; n = 24) were included in the study group and 84 typically developed children were included in the comparison group. All children were evaluated with the Child Occupational Self-Assessment (COSA) and all parents were evaluated with The Executive Function and Occupational Routines Scale (EFORTS) and the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM). Accordingly, statistically significant differences were found between the study group and the comparison group in terms of total scores of the COSA and EFORTS (p < 0.05). In addition, there was a significant difference between the CP, ADHD, and SpLD diagnosis groups and the comparison group in terms of sub-parameters of COSA and EFORTS score (p < 0.05). The findings showed that children with different diagnoses within neurodevelopmental disorders have difficulties in different EFs and occupational performance areas. Also, the pattern of association between EF and POP was different for each group. Therefore, therapists need to consider occupational performance and POP with EFs in their assessments before planning their intervention.

We study the relationship between locus of control and both educational attainment and college aspirations in adolescence, focusing on the potential channels through which locus of control may influence these outcomes. Even after controlling for a comprehensive set of socio-demographic factors and cognitive skills, there remains a strong correlation between locus of control, college aspirations, and attendance. We show that effort is an essential channel through which locus of control operates. Mediation analysis further reveals that this mechanism is more influential than future expectations in determining high-school graduation, college aspirations, and attendance.

Background: Rehabilitation for cognitive-communication impairments following brain injury can be complex given the heterogenous nature of impairments post injury. Project-based intervention has the potential to improve communication skills and create a meaningful real-life context where individuals collaborate to develop a concrete product, which benefits others. While evidence for this intervention is emerging, the COVID-19 pandemic prompted increased use of telehealth interventions to serve people with brain injury. This paper aims to describe a framework for the delivery of project-based intervention via telehealth within community rehabilitation settings; and present several case studies of telehealth groups completed in the United Kingdom and the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A working group was formed to map the components of project-based intervention onto the rehabilitation treatment specification system (RTSS). This system is a conceptual framework that helps to explain the link between treatment theory and ingredients, allowing a clinician to clearly understand how and why a treatment works. First, a literature search was completed to identify eligible studies on project-based intervention after brain injury. Second, those studies were thematically mapped onto the RTSS to identify important intervention components. Third, the presence of these components was assessed for community brain injury groups delivered via telehealth in the United Kingdom and United States. These groups were further described using a taxonomy of social activities that help to describe the degree of meaningful social engagement. Results: The literature was described with a thematic RTSS summary. Treatment aims focus on skills training and self-efficacy, advocacy and self-empowerment, emotional well-being and quality of life, and collaboration and community belonging. Treatment ingredients involve a range of cognitive and behavioural supports to deliver meaningful activities and contexts to complete a project. Mechanisms of action involve learning by doing and cognitive and affective information processing. All four telehealth groups conducted in the United Kingdom and United States involved at least three treatment aims, >7 targets, and >8 treatment ingredients. All groups reported positive experiences from activities that involve working collaboratively to help others and contribute to society. Conclusions: Project-based intervention delivered via telehealth has the potential for supporting people with acquired brain injury to improve their communication skills and engage in meaningful, collaborative activity. Application of the RTSS helps clinicians to understand the aims and therapeutic ingredients (or clinician activities) through which a person with brain injury may achieve specific treatment targets during the rehabilitation process.

Although sibling relationships are significant and enduring throughout the lifespan, research concerning relationships among young adults and their autistic siblings is scarce. The goal of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of multiple features of the sibling relationship from the perspectives of young adults with autistic siblings. Eleven participants completed a semi-structured interview focused on sibling communication, shared activities, family impact, benefits, and personal influence of having an autistic sibling. Qualitative analysis of participant perspectives yielded themes including Personal Qualities and Perspectives, Barriers to Communication, and Family Challenges and Limitations. Over half of the participants shared that their sibling influenced their chosen career path. Results are discussed in relation to previous literature, with an emphasis on the importance of acknowledging and supporting relationships between autistic individuals and their siblings.

This article describes an enrichment and extension of a published applied chemistry experiment involving the use of distilled fragrant compounds of natural plants to prepare facial toner. The original protocol failed to consider quality evaluation of the self-prepared facial toner. Herein, an additional experimental section is included for cosmetic inspection with respect to heavy-metal residues and microbial contamination. As a comprehensive chemical experiment for upper-division undergraduates, it is very popular and suitable for further popularization under the trend of decreasing class hours and increasing laboratory hours.

This study investigated how a STEM outreach program, focused on promoting adolescent girls' interests in STEM, augmented parents' and teachers' (adults) perceptions of doxa (socialization that enhances or stymies girls' STEM interests) after the event, at home and school, respectively. To this end, we provided participating adults with in-event STEM experiences (e.g., participating in STEM activities and interacting with women STEM professionals) and tools (e.g., an activity-based STEM kit) to enhance STEM capital and habitus. Twenty-five adults participated in a post-event open-ended questionnaire and three-month post-event follow up interview. Data were parsed by race (White) and ethnicity (Hispanic) and then coded inductively and deductively using a framework to examine gendered perceptions for STEM. Findings suggest adults found value in the event to nurture girls' STEM interests and preparing girls for STEM futures; yet only four of the sampled adults chose extended STEM experiences by using the provided kit. The significance of this work suggests that adults, regardless of race or ethnicity, require more generative informal experiences with STEM capital and habitus (e.g., hands-on experiences to model at home, information on varied STEM careers) to shift their perceptions of girls' experiences in STEM (doxa) to actively promote girls' interests in STEM and STEM careers.

This study aims to analyze the implementation of pre-lesson reading activities, analyze the impact of pre-lesson reading activities on creative thinking skills, and analyze the constraints of pre-lesson reading activities on creative thinking skills. This research was conducted at State Elementary School 1 Karangduwur, Kebumen, Indonesia. Meanwhile, the subjects of this study were fifth-grade students. Sampling was done by purposive sampling technique. The researcher chose the school because the school became a reference school for Kebumen Regency which had implemented the school literacy movement. The researchers employed observation, interview, test, and documentation techniques to collect data. Then, data analysis was carried out by applying the interactive analysis steps from Miles and Huberman. The steps taken include data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results revealed that pre-lesson reading activities were implemented by maximizing the roles of principals, teachers, and students through monitoring, providing, mentoring, and evaluating programs. The impact of reading activities before class is to increase students' creative thinking skills with the highest order being originality, followed by fluency, elaboration, and finally flexibility. The obstacles encountered were the limited number of readings, limited time, lack of educational content, lack of student experience and low student understanding. These findings can be utilized as references and relevant studies for future researchers to conduct similar studies. Future researchers can analyze the implementation, impacts, and constraints in the classroom wall magazine, reading corner, or literacy tree program in elementary schools.

To understand how parents adapted to virtual learning expectations during the initial COVID-19 school closures in spring 2020, this study investigated families' daily activities, including parents' emotions and their appraisals of the value of daily activities across two timepoints. Thirty-two parent-child dyads (Mean child age = 78 months, 50% male; 47% Latinx/Hispanic; 28% Spanish speaking) from a Southern California school district serving a diverse population completed a daily diary texting protocol (experience sampling method; ESM) five times per day over five days. Families spent most of their time together engaging in mealtime activities (preparing meals and eating). Families from low socioeconomic backgrounds reported appraising academic activities, social skills, and life skills more highly than families from high socioeconomic backgrounds. Parents reported more positive emotions than negative emotions. Findings provide opportunities for educators to mitigate learning loss by building on children's learning experiences and family adaptations to daily routines during COVID-19.

Studies that have been conducted on the topic of self-esteem have shown that it contributes considerably to various important areas of life. However, research has proven that there is ontogenetic variation in self-esteem, and the factors that contribute to its development are not yet very clearly defined (Robins et.al. 2002, Orth & Robins, 2022). Furthermore, researchers suggest that greater consideration should be given to the development of self-esteem in the context of close relationships (Erol & Orth, 2014), in addition to the implementation of engagements aimed at improving self-esteem. These engagements are intended to bring considerable benefits, both to the individuals and to society (Orth & Robins, 2022). In this context, the present research study aims to examine the impact of personal development activities on the level of self-esteem development in primary school students. For the purpose of this goal, we base our arguments on the hypothesis that personal development activities do determine the improvement of the level of self-esteem in primary school students. The design of the study entails quantitative, quasi-experimental, pre-posttest research. The trial was carried out on 40 subjects distributed in two groups, experimental and control. As a methodological tool, we used the LAWSEQ questionnaire (Lawrence, 1981), which measures the general level of self-esteem. After analyzing the data, it was observed that the average level of self-esteem felt by the students in the experimental group was higher than that of the students in the control group, nevertheless, differences were not significant from a statistical point of view. In conclusion, the research hypothesis, according to which: Personal development activities determine the improvement of the level of self-esteem in primary school students, was not confirmed. Thus, it is necessary to reconfigure some of the personal development activities that were proposed, and the topic requires additional research.

Teachers are usually considered the backbone of schools, and understanding teachers' roles is vital to understanding the educational system. With this as a focus, differences in the perceived gender roles of public male and female elementary teachers were collected from 262 teachers from public central elementary schools in Cavite, Philippines. Results showed that elementary teaching is still a female-dominated profession and students have only limited encounters with male and/or father figures in elementary education. It was also observed that male and female teachers share equal roles in reproductive, community, and leisure activities. However, discrepancies are observed in their productive activities as female teachers spend more time in productive activities than male teachers. Strategies for gender-responsive policies and projects for teachers and other education personnel are recommended.
