The sociological study of intellectual recognition has tended to focus on highly cited and highly acclaimed authors and perspectives, while reserving some interest for those who are "forgotten." We know much less about the liminal cases: authors who are in-between fame and oblivion. This paper proposes a way to study intellectual recognition, by examining the liminal case of sociologist Charles H. Cooley. Based on a multilayered (quantitative and qualitative) citation analysis of Cooley's classic work, Human Nature and the Social Order (HNSO), we study the role of intellectual deference in accounting for this liminality. Specifically, we identify two distinct deference processes: acknowledgment and involvement. We argue that Cooley has survived intellectual oblivion by standing on the shoulders of citers, as he has received substantial acknowledgment but decreasing involvement. This essay examines John Locke’s engagement with monsters as a question of toleration in the Essay Concerning Human Understanding. Recounting a monster’s birth as a case of uncertain identity, Locke endorses a provisional form of judgment. I compare this response with Michel de Montaigne’s treatment of monsters in his Essays in order to highlight a politics of imagination and reason relevant to political judgment and toleration. Montaigne alerts us to significant silences in Locke’s treatment of monsters that reveal unrecognized dimensions of his tolerationist position in the Essay. The provisional judgment forwarded by each thinker resituates toleration from epistemological questions of identity toward various practices of acknowledgment as theorized by Stanley Cavell. Consumption and sustainability are complex issues--they cannot be reduced to the choice of consumer goods or to "green consumption." Doing so would neglect the multifaceted embeddedness of consumer acts and the multidimen-sionality of sustainability. To understand patterns of consumption and move them toward sustainability means dealing with this double complexity. A coherent reference framework is therefore needed, to enable locating and correlating research questions, theories, and findings. Such a framework should provide a basis for interdisciplinary under-standing, mutual acknowledgment, and collaborative knowledge creation. Therefore, it needs to be the result of an integrative approach; otherwise it would not allow a wide variety of disciplines to work with it. This article presents such a framework, developed in the course of an interdisciplinary process in a research program. In this process, the researchers of the focal topic asked four questions: 1) How can consumption be conceptualized? 2) How can con-sumption and sustainability be related? 3) How can sustainable consumption be assessed? and 4) How can changes to individual consumption be motivated? The article condenses the researchers' overall answers to these questions into four complementary core statements capturing the key elements of the reference framework and concludes by sketching the framework's benefits for future research. Acknowledgments in research publications, like citations, indicate influential contributions to scientific work. However, acknowledgments are different from citations; whereas citations are formal expressions of debt, acknowledgments are arguably more personal, singular, or private expressions of appreciation and contribution. Furthermore, many sources of research funding expect researchers to acknowledge any support that contributed to the published work. Just as citation indexing proved to be an important tool for evaluating research contributions, we argue that acknowledgments can be considered as a metric parallel to citations in the academic audit process. We have developed automated methods for acknowledgment extraction and analysis and show that combining acknowledgment analysis with citation indexing yields a measurable impact of the efficacy of various individuals as well as government, corporate, and university sponsors of scientific work. acknowledgment analysis | information extraction | machine learning

In the study hereby, the author sets under review the legal regime applicable to certificates of succession under the law prior to the effective date of the Civil Code (October 1st, 2011), as well as amendments thereto under the provisions of the new Code. Prior to the aforementioned reference date, unlike other theorists, the author argues that the tertificate of succession only proved the capacity as heir and did not represent a title deedperse, which by its sole would constitute the ground for entering into Agreements or inscription in the Land Register. In support of this point of view, the author quotes numerous decisions precedent. Publication of six documentary papyrus fragments of the fifth century AD from the Beinecke Library, Yale University. This paper describes a feedback-based congestion control algorithm to guarantee the fair sharing among the TCP connections based on the supervisory control framework. Specifically, a supervisory control scheme is proposed to implement an explicit window adaptation algorithm. In particular, the feedback value is determined by the supervisor and conveyed to the source by modifying the receiver's advertised window in TCP acknowledgments returning to the source. It is known that late in 1625 some county J.P.s were dismissed, but close investigation reveals there was in fact a major purge. On 22 December 1625, chancery issued new commissions of the peace to remove justices. But how can we discover who, how many, and why? For at least 20 counties we can reconstruct the composition of the commissions of the peace, and show that between thirty and forty per cent of J.P.s were abruptly dismissed. It was not only the lazy or the insignificant that lost their places, but nobles, knights and those who had carried the burden of sessions work – especially if they had opposed King Charles and the duke of Buckingham. In a negotiation study, we investigated the efficacy of acknowledging an opponent's role in securing a concession made to that opponent. The study featured a face-to-face, one-shot bargaining session between a student favoring marijuana legalization and a confederate playing the role of a legalization opponent. When the confederate acknowledged the student's putative influence in producing a concession by the confederate, the student perceived the magnitude of the concession to be greater and was more likely to accept it. The student negotiators also reported that they liked the other party more following acknowledgement, and our mediational analysis suggested that enhanced interpersonal sentiments played a role in facilitating agreement. In this article, in addition to documenting these findings, we also discuss their implications, both for theoretical analyses of conflict and negotiation and for the practical problem of settling disputes. He stated the editorial boards of journals publishing results of animal research should include a statement on the ethical use of animals to its authors. I am honored and flattered that this old text of mine should have been deemed worth translating and publishing in the Rhetoric Society Quarterly. It was initially intended as a chapter of my book Le symbolisme en général (Hermann, 1974; translated as Rethinking Symbolism by Alice L. Morton, for Cambridge University Press, 1975). But, under the encouragement of Tzetan Todorov, it developed beyond what I had planned and was taken out of the draft of the book. In 1975, Deirdre Wilson, who had introduced me to analytic philosophy in general and to the work of Paul Grice in particular, published her book, Presuppositions and Non-truth-conditional Semantics (Academic Press). She and I decided to write a joint programmatic paper covering the ground between semantics and the rhetoric of figures and we ended up collaborating for thirty years, and developing, with the help of many students and colleagues around the world, the cognitive approach to verbal communication known as Relevance Theory. In retrospect, my 1975 "rudiments" were indeed quite rudimentary. Still, re-reading the article, I confess that I find it insightful. Most insights have been integrated and improved upon in later work. Quality and quantity of publications are among the most important measures determining the success of ecologists. The past 50 years have seen a steady rise in the number of researchers and collaborative manuscripts, and a corresponding increase in multi-authored articles. Despite these increases, there remains a shortage of useful and definitive guidelines to aid ecologists in addressing authorship issues, leading to a lack of consistency in what the term "author" really means. Deciding where to draw the line between those who have earned authorship and those who are more appropriately credited in the acknowledgments may be one of the more challenging aspects of authorship. Here, we borrow ideas from other scientific disciplines and propose a simple solution to help ecologists who are making such decisions. We recommend improving communication between co-authors throughout the research process, and propose that authors publish their contributions to a manuscript in a separate byline. This article analyzes the acknowledgement section of the book "Death of a Discipline" by Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak. The book has no introduction, preface or foreword. It only has three chapters which are preceded by the Acknowledgments. This two-page text begins by thanking the man who suggested the book's topic and ends by thanking the man who first read the book, but Spivak acknowledges more and other than the usual people and institutions that helped make the book. A phrase used by Spivak in his acknowledgment reflects an allusion amplified by the book Hamlet.
