Disability is a basic human condition that affects a significant proportion of the world's population, yet many disability- and accessibility-relevant issues remain pressing and insufficiently addressed. With three experiments, the current research investigates potential reasons for why marketplace disability accessibility has not been universally accepted. Potential barriers to greater accessibility in marketplaces may arise because such efforts appear at odds with other salient priorities, at micro (i.e. consumer) and macro (i.e. firm, policy, or societal) levels. In the proposed framework and resulting experiments, micro-level trade-offs prompt perceptions of personal cost and macro-level trade-offs prompt perceptions of firm morality. In turn, these perceptions mediate firm evaluations, showing that consumers at baseline respond negatively to accessibility. Critically, however, several practical interventions emerge from these processes. Marketers can mitigate consumers' negative responses to accessibility by employing simple framing choices such as emphasizing who benefits or noting what the purpose of the offering is. By demonstrating one way to better understand perceptions of the full spectrum of the consumer population, this research provides pathways for consumer researchers to further delve into disability-related research in the future. The present study tested an integrated model of the maintenance of the ableist social system toward wheelchair users. The model focuses on the endorsed medical model of disability, and the witnessing of negotiation for environmental accessibility by people without disabilities. A cross-sectional sample of 821 university staff members and students from Hong Kong without self-reported disabilities completed a self-report questionnaire. Structural equation modeling obtained a satisfactory model fit (comparative fit index =.96, Tucker-Lewis Index =.95, root mean square error of approximation =.05, standardized root mean square residuals =.06). The findings inform remedial approaches to addressing ableism toward wheelchair users at cultural, social, mass media, and education levels. The study also calls for the development of more quantitative measures of the perceptions of people without disabilities toward disability models, environmental in/accessibility, and collective actions for social inclusion for further empirical research on ableism. When transport systems are accessible and inclusive, people with disability experience dignity. Alternatively, when personal mobility is constrained by physical, social and/or communication, barriers, people with disability experience exclusion and an increasing vulnerability to indignity. This study sought to qualitatively explore the role of trains and buses in an Australian city in supporting access, inclusion and dignified mobility experiences for people with disability. Twenty-six semi-structured interviews were conducted with participants with diverse visible and invisible disabilities and were analysed thematically using Framework Analysis. The findings highlight the complexities involved with navigating public transport systems while maintaining dignity for people with disability. Accessible and inclusive information, infrastructure, and interactions with staff ensured dignified mobility experiences. If any part of a journey was inaccessible, participants were vulnerable to indignity. Dignified mobility experiences represent a complex and dynamic interaction between personal experiences and preferences, impairment-specific requirements, transport infrastructure, interpersonal experiences, and information inclusivity. Points of interest: Public transport systems can play an important role in enabling, facilitating and sustaining dignity for people with disability. People with disability experience theoretical and practical gaps when using trains and buses. Gaps result from infrastructure, environment, information, and attitudinal barriers. Accessibility and security issues pertaining to people with disabilities in Zimbabwe’s urban areas have so far received limited priority in scholarship and social policy. This is a major deviation from the prerequisites for disability inclusion, rights-based governance and development, and transformative social policy. Using qualitative research methodology, the paper addresses this compelling lacuna by exploring selected germane issues affecting people with disabilities, and advances policy options that Zimbabwe and other countries can implement to transform the well-being of this often excluded and trivialized group. The article acknowledges current effort for improving accessibility and security in and of urban areas but more importantly shows that people with disabilities are experiencing multiple problems due to glaring deficiencies in urban policy, amenities, and services. Transformative disability policy buttressed by a multi-stakeholder approach is indispensable in improving the situation of people with disabilities in relation to accessibility and security in urban areas. Navigating narrow restrooms is challenging for the elderly using wheelchairs or walkers (EUWW). Existing research focuses on the convenience of furniture use in the restroom and overlooks the convenience of mobility between furniture pieces. However, the floor plans of accessible restrooms determine the mobility path of EUWW, affecting mobility convenience. Thus, to improve mobility, floor plans should be evaluated to shorten movement distances and reduce bends. Experiments in constructed environments were expensive. This study instead proposes a novel path-planning based method for accessible restroom floor plan evaluation, simulating mobility paths in a virtual environment, and evaluating how the floor plans of accessible restrooms affect mobility and convenience. The results showed that: (1) wheelchair users, who approach the toilet from the rear, and walker users find opposite wall toilet-sink arrangements convenient. While Wheelchair users, who approach the toilet from the side or front, find it convenient if the toilet and sink are situated on different walls at a 90° angle. Toilets and sinks on the same wall are inconvenient. (2) Corner sinks and toilets reduce EUWW's turning angles. (3) The farther the sink is from the side wall, the more convenient it is for EUWW. (4) The 45° side approach is the most convenient for moving, followed by the frontal approach, and lastly the 90° approach. Theoretically, this study uses path planning algorithms, simulating the movement of EUWW with varying capabilities and offering a new perspective for barrier-free architectural design. This study aimed to explore the requirements for accessible Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) and AV services from a consumer perspective, focusing on people with disabilities (PwDs) and older adults. Two national surveys were conducted, capturing current transportation trends and AV priorities. Participants (n = 922) with disabilities and older adults were included in the analysis. Transportation choices exhibited significant divergence based on the underlying causes of disabilities, showcasing distinct inclinations and impediments within each category. AV services, encompassing family conveyance and package delivery, proved integral, but their specific desirability fluctuated in accordance with the nature of disabilities. Notably, medical appointments emerged as the foremost AV utilisation requirement, particularly pronounced among individuals with hearing impairments. Preferences for orchestrating AV rides and the preferred vehicle types displayed disparities linked to the various disability classifications. The employment of mobile applications, websites, and text messages were preferred mediums for arranging rides. Features such as automated route guidance and collision prevention garnered unanimous precedence among AV attributes. Key priorities, spanning wheelchair accessibility, user profiles, and seamless communication with AVs, were universally emphasised across all participant clusters. The study indicated a moderate comfort level with AV deployment, implying the potential for favourable reception within the population of PwDs and older adults. The study highlights the significance of considering diverse needs in accessible AV development of vehicle and infrastructure and policies. The findings inform evidence-based interventions and programmes that prioritise accessibility needs, promoting social inclusion and equitable transportation solutions. Introduction: Modern research teams are re-evaluating conventionalmethods with the aimof improving the usefulness of knowledge for users, focusing on the role of knowledge users in shaping innovation. In disability field, encouraging participatory research inherently involves diverse perspectives andinclusion, which alignswiththe principles of universal accessibility. By actively involving individuals with various backgrounds, abilities, and needs in the research process, we can better understand and address the challenges faced in adopting universal accessibility. This approach ensures that solutions are more comprehensive, inclusive, and effectively cater to the needs of all individuals, fostering a more equitable and accessible environment for everyone. Despite municipal organizations mandating universal accessibility action plans, they lack tools for efficient implementation. The aim of this study was to develop knowledge mobilization tools tailored to a specific municipal context in Quebec, Canada, to facilitate the implementation of universal accessibility measures by municipal employees. Methods: The co-design process employed in this study was organized into four distinct stages, following the Morales model: (1) Exploration (2) Co-Design (3) Validation (4) Development. Results: Stages one and two highlighted the employees' lack of awareness about universal accessibility issues and their need to have more information and resources about how universal accessibility is encountered in their work. A steering committee co-designed three video vignettes about universal accessibility, the city's action plan and measures included in it. Discussion: The co-design approach used in this study allowed us to observe the non-linear nature of partnership research with an organization as complex as a municipality. A growing number of adults are aging with spinal cord injury (SCI) acquired earlier in life. Social integration is important for health and participation after SCI. However, little is known about the role of the community built environment for supporting social integration among adults aging with SCI. Using a structured telephone survey with 182 adults aging with SCI in the midwestern United States, we found that more community built environment facilitators (e.g., curb cuts, automatic doors, paved surfaces) and fewer barriers (e.g., gravel surfaces, crowds) significantly increased the odds of regularly engaging in both formal and informal social activities. Aging in a suitable residential environment is essential for the health and well-being of older adults. This study aims to analyze the residential environment preferences (REPs) of older people in China to create a residential environment suitable for their physical and mental health, enhancing their life satisfaction. This study used a sample questionnaire to identify relevant characteristics and analyze preferences, which were validated using non-parametric tests and Pearson's correlation coefficient tests. The questionnaire consisted of 33 questions on characteristics of the residential environment on a 7-point Likert scale and was administered to 433 older adults aged 60 and over in 28 provinces in China. The results showed that "community safety" was the most important environmental characteristic, with an average importance rating of 5.77 out of 6. Accessible building design (average rating of 4.91), emergency response systems (average rating of 4.49), and indoor thermal comfort (average rating of 4.45) were also key factors in promoting aging in place. There was a positive correlation between the community environment and the indoor environment (e.g., community safety and indoor sound insulation, r = 0.209, p < 0.01), and both were, to some extent, negatively correlated with building features (e.g., public toilets and private courtyards, r = −0.278, p < 0.01; indoor thermal comfort and green building design, r = −0.165, p < 0.01). Age and physical health had a strong influence on preferences, but gender had little influence. This study paves the way for future research and policy development on age-friendly housing to ensure sustainable and supportive residential environments for the aging population. To address the problem of accurately evaluating age-friendly retrofit indicators in urban communities, this study constructs an evaluation model that takes into account user preferences and their interaction needs based on the social–ecological–technological systems (SETS) theory. The model aims to establish a set of precise community retrofit indicators, covering aspects such as public participation level, public ancillary facilities, green space layout, living environment building, health service support, and accessible design. By employing prioritization strategies, the model seeks to maximize resident satisfaction and promote harmonious coexistence between the community and the environment. Firstly, the retrofit evaluation indicators are formulated using the SETS theory. The entropy weight method (EWM) is then applied to determine the initial weights of these evaluation indicators, followed by the use of the Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) method to analyze the interrelationships among the indicators. The Kano model is integrated to adjust the weights, reflecting their importance. The final weights of the indicators are determined through normalization. Based on this, the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method is employed to rank and analyze the importance of age-friendly retrofits in the community. Finally, six communities in Dalian, Liaoning Province, China, are selected as samples to evaluate and analyze the age-friendly retrofit indicators. Different methods are compared, and their advantages and disadvantages are ranked to validate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed approach. Based on the analysis results, specific design schemes for improving the identified shortcomings in age-friendly aspects of these communities are proposed, considering the needs of aging populations and taking into account community public facilities, accessible design renovations, and the enhancement of green space layouts. This study aims to explore the comprehensive benefits of an age-friendly retrofit in urban communities and provide reference for the deep integration of social, ecological, and technological benefits in urban renewal. Background: Fall hazards in bathroom spaces constitute one of the most critical issues in the daily lives of older adults. Bathroom falls are somewhat different and constrained in nature than those in other parts of a home environment. Objectives: This study aimed to adopt a user‐centred approach to explore older adults' general bathroom needs, with a specific focus on showers and bathtubs as the designated activity area. Methods: The authors employed an extended importance–performance analysis (IPA) with a mixed‐method research design. Three hundred and eleven older adults participated in a face‐to‐face IPA questionnaire for the quantitative phase of the study. The authors gathered the qualitative data through open‐ended questions from 59 older adults. Results: The authors found positive correlation between older adults' attitudes towards an older‐friendly bathroom and the potential for their bathrooms to be fall‐free. The IPA calculations identify three key items with higher ratings in both importance and performance: The presence of appropriate artificial lighting, efficient mechanical ventilation and an accessible inside towel rail. Thematic analysis yields four themes: comfort, ease of access, error‐proof design and emergency management. Conclusions: The IPA calculations and thematic analysis confirm that older adults' rankings of importance and performance and their corresponding priority levels within the overarching themes indicate the need for these aspects to perform well and justify ongoing investments. The study concludes that addressing fall prevention requires not only designing specific solutions but also utilising appropriate technology in bathing and toileting activities. Implications for Practice: Practitioners in geriatric and gerontological nursing, design, architecture and health care can use the importance and performance priority levels of older adults to guide the development and implementation of fall‐free bathroom design. Mechanistic reasoning about an artifact or system involves thinking about its underlying entities and the properties, activities, and cause-effect relationships of those entities. Previous studies of children's mechanistic reasoning about engineering solutions have mostly focused on specific mechanical systems such as gear trains. Yet there is growing interest in more contextualized, community-connected engineering design experiences for elementary students. Important questions remain about how the specific features of community contexts influence student opportunities for engineering design practice and reasoning. In this study, we explore whether comparisons in students' mechanistic reasoning can be made across a range of five different community design contexts. For this qualitative descriptive study, we focus on interview data collected after each of five community-connected engineering-enriched science curriculum units: accessible playground design (3rd grade, N = 8, district A, schools 1 and 2), displaced animal relocation design (3rd grade, N = 10, district A, school 1), migration stopover site design (4th grade, N = 4, district A, school 2), retaining wall design (4th grade, N = 13, district B, school 1), and water filter design (5th grade, N = 9 students, district A, school 3). The findings showed that all students named entities and described entity factors for the design solutions for all five units. For the playground, displaced animals, and stopover sites units, some students described the design artifacts without explicitly expressing connections between entity factors and/or the way factors linked up to the design performance. We argue that particular features of the design tasks influenced students' approaches to explaining their design solutions. The aim of this study was to investigate the challenges women with neuromuscular disease face when having to urinate when away from home. The design for this study was qualitative using the interpretive description methodology and the Sense of Coherence theory. The method was three semi-structured focus group interviews with 12 women (3 ambulant and 9 non-ambulant) with neuromuscular diseases at a specialized rehabilitation hospital. We found that physical and functional barriers hampered the opportunity to urinate when away from home due to lack of accessibility and impaired physical functioning. Psychosocial impacts were related to inconvenience and dependency on relatives, fear of stigmatization and impacted dignity, and the constant social sacrifices. The challenge of access to adequate and equitable sanitation for women with neuromuscular diseases is not at always met in society, and these women consequently often must resort to repressing the fundamental need to urinate. In modern society, people engage in social interactions and activities outside their own home. When in public settings people may need to eliminate bodily waste, so public toilets are required. Accessibility, availability and adaptability are essential principles for safe, private, and purposeful visits to public toilets. A diverse range of individuals use public toilets: various age profiles, all gender groups, vulnerable individuals and people with additional needs. Public toilets essentially need to be a place of privacy, safety and cleanliness to facilitate elimination of urine, evacuation of faeces, management of menstruation, and changing/disposing of continence wear products in a secure environment. This study developed inclusive apparel design (IAD) framework to systematically analyse diverse clothing needs of people with different capabilities in reach, dexterity, and mobility, including people living with disabilities. The research critically examined two accessible design approaches, inclusive design framework and universal design framework, focusing on their similarities and distinctions as well as suitability for developing apparel products that cater to the needs of people with different capabilities in reach, dexterity, and mobility. Based on the analysis, three levels of difficulty in using clothing were proposed: (a) from no to minimal difficulty; (b) moderate difficulty; and (c) severe difficulty. For the three levels of difficulty, the IAD framework outlines three respective design strategies: (a) user-aware design, (b) modular design, and (c) special-purpose design. Higher education has seen a significant shift in the last two decades, with contemporary students representing more diverse cohorts who are increasingly balancing study alongside competing life-roles and responsibilities. Given the rise in student attrition and concerns regarding engagement, we saw a visible need to consider how our students could be better supported in managing their study requirements which might improve retention and engagement. We asked students what best helps them to manage their learning and time, and this study reports on responses from 430 students over 8 course offerings between 2019 and 2021. Responses were coded using inductive category development and grouped into internal and external locus of control. The findings reveal 52.6% students demonstrated an interplay of internal and external locus of control factors, while 29.5% identified fully internal and 17.9% indicated fully external LOC. The study highlights that flexible, multi-pronged strategies and institutional supports are fundamental in supporting diverse modern tertiary student populations. The paper concludes with considerations for educators and higher education institutions, drawing on the principles of Universal Design for Learning and pedagogical care that may address many aspects raised by students that are outside their locus of control, which may consequently benefit student retention and engagement. The awareness that museums must be inclusive and participatory led to practices adapted to visitors' requirements and co-creative experiences, encouraging interaction with exhibitions, and thus fostering memorable experiences. Yet, constraints remain for people with disabilities, reducing their satisfaction and desire to return. Despite the high number of people with visual impairments worldwide, there is a lack of research on factors that may impact their co-creation in museums. This paper aims to identify factors influencing the co-creation of people with visual impairments experiences in museums, either facilitating or constraining it. Based on focus groups discussion, the results of the study conducted suggest that the co-creation of people with visual impairments in museums is influenced both by aspects related to visitors, as well as by disabling features of the museums' physical, communicational, and attitudinal environments. Conclusions and implications drawn are critical to improve the experience of people with visual impairments in museums. This article highlights that despite the high number of people with visual impairments worldwide, many still face constraints when visiting museums. The article reveals that several museums offer opportunities for interacting with the whole museum environment and co-creating value, to trigger memorable experiences. This paper fills a research gap by analysing how a set of factors influence people with visual impairments to get involved in co-creation in museums, either facilitating or constraining it. The research found that the factors that influence co-creation of experiences of people with visual impairments in museums can be related to the visitors or to the museums, including physical, communicational and attitudinal aspects. Objectives: This is a need assessment study conducted on wheelchair users with limited locomotion ability in the legs in the Ahmedabad urban region in India. The results describe the unmet needs in the indoor and outdoor settings. Even though India is a large country with huge diversity in local climate and terrain and big socio-economic disparity, need assessment studies for assistive technology across various socio-economic or with region specificity are extremely scarce. Accordingly, this study aims to understand the needs and requirements of mobility assistive technology users that are not met by their current devices. Methods: Data from 69 participants having physical disabilities were collected through interviews and 6 of the participants were video-tapped to observe their daily routine. Meanwhile, a qualitative analysis of the collected data was carried out. Results: The analysis highlights problems of participants, such as working in the kitchen, inability to perform everyday indoor tasks, inaccessibility of toilets and public transport, etc. Discussion: A mixture of qualitative and quantitative data analysis showed that the major features that the Indian wheelchair users wanted were the ability to adjust the height of the chair, the ability to reach objects without too much maneuvering of the wheelchair, ease of transfer from wheelchair to toilet seat and back and also meet outdoor needs. Inclusive Design has been widely promoted in the fields of product, engineering, and user experience design. Despite the educational efforts made by scientists, practitioners, and institutions to raise awareness about accessibility and inclusion, Inclusive Design has not been widely embraced in architectural design practice, where it is often associated with design for disability. This multidisciplinary study, spanning behavioural science, ergonomics, and the social sciences of architecture, explores the challenges architectural design practitioners face when designing inclusively, and identifies opportunities to promote the adoption of Inclusive Design. The results of a questionnaire completed by 114 architectural design practitioners underscore the lack of client awareness of the benefits of inclusive design, highlight the important role practitioners can play in advocating for Inclusive Design, and emphasize the need to develop practices and tools that enhance the design and post-design phases of buildings to ensure inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility. Background: This pilot study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of digitally crafted customized healing abutments in stabilizing peri-implant soft tissues following tooth extraction and assess the preservation of peri-implant soft tissue architecture over 5 years. Material and Methods: Forty patients (age ≥ 25 years) were divided into test (n = 20) and control (n = 20) groups. The test group received dental implants with immediate loading after tooth extraction, along with customized healing abutments fabricated using CAD/CAM technology. The control group received dental implants with immediate loading without customized healing abutments. The primary outcome was the change in distance between the peri-implant soft tissue margin and implant fixture surface from baseline to 5 years post implantation. Results: In the test group, there was a significant decrease in the distance between the peri-implant soft tissue margin and fixture surface from baseline to 5 years (p < 0.001), with pairwise comparisons showing significant differences between multiple time points (p < 0.05). The control group showed less pronounced changes over time. Conclusions: Within the limitations of this pilot study, digitally fabricated customized healing abutments appear effective in stabilizing peri-implant soft tissues and preserving soft tissue architecture around dental implants over 5 years following immediate implant placement. People with disabilities must be considered as one of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque user groups. This happens because of the lack of accessible facilities and it is not in accordance with the standards set by the government. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a research to determine whether the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque has met the accessibility criteria. The research aims to determine the accessibility of the Sheikh Zayed grand mosque. The results of the assessment are used as a basis for making improvements in the mosque accessibility. The method used is filling out an accessibility check sheet. The checklists are developed from the regulation of the Minister of Public Works and Housing of the Republic of Indonesia number 14/PRT/M/2017 and universal design. The level of accessibility is also determined based on the same regulation and universal design. The areas studied include: circulation/corridor, entrance/exit, ramp, stair/lift, handrail, wudu area, toilet, prayer room, parking area, as well as signs and information. The results of the accessibility index assessment showed that six areas of the mosque were categorized as accessible, two areas of the mosque were categorized as less accessible, and two areas of the mosque were categorized as inaccessible. Proposed improvements were made to the circulation area, ramps, stairs/elevators, handrails, wudhu areas, toilets, prayer rooms, parking areas, as well as signs and information. The article discusses the history and expansion of the Institut Henri Poincaré (IHP) in France, which has become a renowned international research center for mathematics and theoretical physics. The director, Cédric Villani, secured public funding to refurbish Perrin's building and create an expanded mathematical center known as IHP+. As part of this expansion, a mathematics museum called Maison Poincaré was established on the ground floor of Perrin's building. The museum aims to showcase mathematical objects, provide outreach experiences, and foster interactions between the public and researchers at IHP. The museum is inclusive and accessible, with translations in English, exhibits for visually impaired individuals, and French sign language and subtitles in videos for those who are deaf or hard of hearing. People with disabilities (PWD) face significant health disparities, yet they have largely been excluded from health research and clinical trials, including in-person and virtual focus group research. The lack of clear protocols for recruiting research participants with disabilities and designing fully accessible online focus groups may contribute to their exclusion. Additionally, barriers to screening, consent, and hosting focus groups with PWD have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, with planning, flexibility, and creativity, researchers can anticipate and overcome barriers to inclusion and conduct critical research that is accessible to PWD. This article presents a concrete example and lessons learned from the application of principles of accessible research design to a project utilizing virtual focus groups. The examples shared demonstrate how to approach research with PWD by outlining universal principles to hosting focus groups and encouraging project-specific measures to make the research more accessible to the participants involved. We argue that accessible research design should prioritize inclusion and flexibility to meet the diverse needs of participants. Community engagement, financial resources for necessary accommodations and modifications, and a commitment to disability justice principles are all necessary components for successful research that fully includes PWD. By adopting disability humility and embracing universal research design that allows for accommodations and modifications, researchers can maximize the potential for inclusive and impactful research. Background: Physical inactivity is a major public health concern, exacerbated in countries with a (sub)tropical climate. The built environment can facilitate physical activity; however, current evidence is mainly from North American and European countries with activity-friendly climate conditions. This study explored associations between built environment features and physical activity in global tropical or subtropical dry or desert climate regions. Methods: A systematic review of four major databases (Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, and SportDISCUS) was performed. To be included, studies had to investigate associations between perceived or objective built environment characteristics and adult's physical activity and had to be conducted in a location with (sub)tropical climate. Each investigated association was reported as one case and results were synthesized based upon perceived and objectively assessed environment characteristics as well as Western and non-Western countries. Study quality was evaluated using a tool designed for assessing studies on built environment and physical activity. Results: Eighty-four articles from 50 studies in 13 countries with a total of 2546 built environment-physical activity associations were included. Design (connectivity, walking/cycling infrastructure), desirability (aesthetics, safety), and destination accessibility were the built environment characteristics most frequently associated with physical activity across the domains active transport, recreational physical activity, total walking and cycling, and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, particularly if multiple attributes were present at the same time. Very few studies assessed built environment attributes specifically relevant to physical activity in (sub)tropical climates. Most studies were conducted in Western countries, with results being largely comparable with non-Western countries. Findings were largely generalizable across gender and age groups. Results from natural experiments indicated that relocating to an activity-friendly neighborhood impacted sub-groups differently. Conclusions: Built environment attributes, including destination accessibility, connectivity, walking and cycling infrastructure, safety, and aesthetics, are positively associated with physical activity in locations with (sub)tropical climate. However, few studies focus on built environment attributes specifically relevant in a hot climate, such as shade or indoor recreation options. Further, there is limited evidence from non-Western countries, where most of the urban population lives in (sub)tropical climates. Aim: To evaluate patients' satisfaction levels with primary healthcare services and providers in Jordan and assess differences in patients' satisfaction in relation to sociodemographic factors and accessibility to primary healthcare. Design: A descriptive cross‐sectional design was used in this study. Sampling: A convenient sampling technique was utilized. Measures: A 34‐item survey instrument was adopted and distributed to patients in nine primary healthcare centers in Amman in the period between October and December 2022. Results: A total of 225 patients completed the survey. The mean total score for patient satisfaction with primary healthcare services was 25.22 (SD = 4.13). There were significant differences in satisfaction with services in terms of educational level, visitation reason, mode of transportation, availability of parking, and suitably designed for patients with disabilities. Furthermore, the mean total score for patient satisfaction with primary healthcare providers was 22.85 (SD = 5.86). There were significant differences in relation to visitation reason, mode of transportation, and parking space availability. Conclusion: It is important to improve patient satisfaction in primary healthcare facilities, and the Ministry of Health should implement policies for improving the quality of services provided by primary healthcare. Background: According to social-ecological models, the built and natural environment has the potential to facilitate or hinder physical activity (PA). While this potential is well researched in urban areas, a current systematic review of how the built and natural environment is related to PA in rural areas is lacking. Methods: We searched five databases and included studies for adults (18–65 years) living in rural areas. We included quantitative studies investigating the association between any self-reported or objectively measured characteristic of the built or natural environment and any type of self-reported or objectively measured PA, and qualitative studies that reported on features of the built or natural environment perceived as barriers to or facilitators of PA by the participants. Screening for eligibility and quality assessment (using the Standard Quality Assessment Criteria for Evaluating Primary Research Papers from a Variety of Fields) were done in duplicate. We used a narrative approach to synthesize the results. Results: Of 2432 non-duplicate records, 51 quantitative and 19 qualitative studies were included. Convincing positive relationships were found between the availability and accessibility of places for exercise and recreation and leisure-time PA as well as between the overall environment and leisure-time PA. Possible positive associations were found between the overall environment and total and transport-related PA, between greenness/natural environment and total PA, between cycling infrastructure and aesthetics and MVPA, and between pedestrian infrastructure and total walking. A possible negative relationship was found between safety and security and total walking. Qualitative studies complemented several environmental facilitators (facilities for exercise and recreation, sidewalks or streets with low traffic, attractive natural environment) and barriers (lack of facilities and destinations, lack of sidewalks, speeding traffic and high traffic volumes, lack of street lighting). Conclusions: Research investigating the relationship between the built and natural environment and PA behaviors of adults living in rural areas is still limited and there is a need for more high-quality and longitudinal studies. However, our most positive findings indicate that investing in places for exercise and recreation, a safe infrastructure for active transport, and nature-based activities are possible strategies that should be considered to address low levels of PA in rural adults. Introduction: Pre-discharge home assessments by occupational therapists facilitate safe and timely discharge from hospital and are associated with better health outcomes. Digital technology offers the potential to reduce duplication of documentation and improve communication and sharing of home assessment findings. Objective: This quality improvement project evaluated time-cost; clinician satisfaction and confidence; and acceptability of the use of a digital approach to home assessments. Methods: A prospective, cross-sectional design was used to compare usual practice with the digital approach across two sub-acute wards in a large metropolitan hospital in Queensland, Australia. Time to document and conduct home assessments as well as clinician satisfaction and confidence were compared using descriptive statistics. Clinician perspectives about the home assessment approaches were collected through a survey and analyzed using content analysis. Results: Home assessment and documentation time were significantly lower for the home assessments conducted using the digital approach compared with usual practice assessments. Clinician satisfaction with using digital technology was higher. Conclusions: The introduction of this simple technology reduced clinicians' time to conduct home assessments and document home assessment reports. First, as a fan of live music and a power wheelchair user living with congenital muscular dystrophy, I use critical storytelling to describe my personal experiences of negotiating for accessibility during participation in arts and cultural activities. Second, I reflect broadly on the ableist ideologies that contribute to the inaccessibility of arts and cultural activities, focusing on the narrow scope of target participants, the ableist rationale for accessibility service provision, the inaccessibility of promotional materials and ticketing, segregated seating arrangements, venue inaccessibility, and single-modal performance. Third, I highlight the detrimental impact of the inaccessibility of arts and cultural activities at the organizational, social, intergroup, interpersonal, and individual levels. Finally, I propose future research directions and suggestions for inclusive practice in arts and cultural activities. This paper aims to promote self-empowerment, unravel the manifestations of ableism in arts and cultural activities, and stimulate readers' critical reflection on in/accessibility of arts and cultural activities. As a power wheelchair user living with congenital muscular dystrophy in Hong Kong, I reflect on how my first-hand experiences of going to more than 60 live concerts and some other arts and cultural activities across five places reinforce discrimination and stereotypes against wheelchair users. I provide examples of my real-life scenarios to illustrate the discrimination against wheelchair users in cultural and arts activities. Examples include experiences in the purchase of concert tickets, inquiries about accessible seating options, communication with venue staff, and interactions with my companions during concerts. I reflect on the impact of the discrimination and barriers of arts and cultural activities. I provide examples of inclusive practices that can promote the accessibility of arts and cultural activities. The writing process is a self-empowering. The increasing demand for equitable higher education necessitates changes in how to consider and develop inclusive university settings. Using a systems-thinking lens, this article examines the whole-campus approach to technology and inclusion of college students with disabilities in Ireland. In-depth interviews with students with disabilities and other stakeholders representing higher education, non-profit organizations, and government bodies uncovered critical areas and dynamics for understanding and building institution-wide capacity for overcoming barriers to technology and access, and creating a systemic culture of inclusion in higher education. Five themes were identified: equity of technology-based access; shared responsibility and accountability; staff knowledge development; institutional commitment and management; and student partnership. The study indicated that embedding guidance, recognition and expectations for universal design, technology-inclusive practice, and meaningful input of students with disabilities across all areas of university life would help to cultivate more equitable higher education for all. The whole-campus approach to technology and inclusion recommends that all aspects of university life are fully accessible and inclusive to all. Creating settings across institutions that can be accessed and used by all, to the greatest extent possible, and developing staff's responsibility and skills for technology and practices that include students with disabilities are important areas for further action. Greater recognition of teaching and professional development for inclusive education is required. Promoting assistive technologies and teaching and learning approaches for inclusion in terms of their wide-reaching benefits and diversity, rather than focusing exclusively on disability, may be a promising step towards making inclusion mainstream. Assistive technology is extremely important for maintaining and improving the elderly's quality of life. Biometrics-based mobile user authentication (MUA) methods have witnessed rapid development in recent years owing to their usability and security benefits. However, there is a lack of a comprehensive review of such methods for the elderly. The primary objective of this research is to analyze the literature on state-of-the-art biometrics-based MUA methods via the lens of elderly users' accessibility needs. In addition, conducting an MUA user study with elderly participants faces significant challenges, and it remains unclear how the performance of the elderly compares with non-elderly users in biometrics-based MUA. To this end, this research summarizes method design principles for user studies involving elderly participants and reveals the performance of elderly users relative to non-elderly users in biometrics-based MUA. Background and Objectives The concept of aging in place is acknowledged as the preference of older adults, yet without consideration of the intersections of diversity in later life, it is critiqued as unattainable, unrealistic, or even undesirable. This gave rise to the exploration of what is needed to age in the right place (AIRP). Building on existing research, we examined the meaning of AIRP to older adults (aged 55+ years) who have experienced homelessness. Research Design and Methods We conducted photovoice interviews with 11 residents of a temporary housing program in Metro Vancouver (Canada). Results Using thematic analysis, we organized meanings of AIRP according to (1) Where one lives—the physical and social environment, (2) Where one goes and what one does, and (3) How one feels in "the right place." Discussion and Implications Participants meanings' of AIRP are applied to Maslow's hierarchy of needs. That is, when basic needs of shelter are met, participants' considerations of "the right place to age" extend beyond affordable housing to include feeling safe and comfortable in one's home and neighborhood and having access to meaningful engagement and activities—both in vibrant urban districts and naturescapes—enabled by affordable transportation. Our examination of what AIRP means to this group of older adults broadens current conceptualizations. Given the increase in homelessness among older adults, it is imperative that policymakers and practitioners are cognizant of meanings of AIRP so diverse older adults can not only age in place, but can thrive in the right place. Background and Objectives Age-friendly communities are those with characteristics that can support and promote healthy aging. Among the common domains of these characteristics, transportation and neighborhood spaces are particularly relevant for older adults maintaining mobility in their communities. The objective of this scoping review is to provide a synthesis of age-friendly community indicators, developed for research and planning, that evaluate characteristics most associated with community-level mobility, specifically transportation and neighborhood spaces. Research Design and Methods We conducted a systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, Medline, APA PsychInfo, CINAHL Plus, SocIndex, Academic Search Premier, and Web of Science. We reviewed 8 articles and reports that described the development or evaluation of a set of generalizable indicators to measure the age-friendliness of a community's transportation and neighborhood spaces resources. Results Indicators of transportation and neighborhood spaces ranged from self-reported measures of accessibility and convenience to objective measures of the availability and cost of services. Explicit discussion of mobility at the community level was variable in these records, and few authors specifically discussed common life transitions impacted by these age-friendly community indicators, such as driving cessation. Discussion and Implications Although age-friendly communities are a well-established goal for promoting healthy aging, our review found few validated approaches for measuring age-friendliness that researchers and communities can use to investigate mobility at the community level. This is an important gap in studying life transitions such as driving cessation. Further research can provide a better understanding of which community characteristics support ongoing mobility. Importance: Environmental modifications are targets for occupational therapy intervention because they support activities of daily living, self-efficacy, personal control, independence, and community living for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs). Objective: To examine how environmental modifications were provided to people with IDDs through Medicaid home- and community-based services (HCBS) waivers across the United States in fiscal year (FY) 2021. Design: Using a mixed-methods policy analysis, we examined FY 2021 Medicaid HCBS 1915(c) waivers from across the United States to examine whether, and how, states provided environmental modifications to people with IDDs. Results: In FY 2021, 35 states projected spending $68.8 million on environmental modifications for 12,671 people with IDDs. The purpose of environmental modifications was most often to promote the health, welfare, and safety of people with IDDs (82.68%), and to promote their independence (69.29%). The most common examples of environmental modifications included ramps and/or lifts (70.08%), widening doorways and/or hallways (61.42%), bathroom modifications (58.27%), specialized electrical and/or plumbing for medical equipment (54.33%), and grab bars and/or handrails (53.54%). Conclusions and Relevance: HCBS waiver data on environmental modifications for people with IDDs enhances an understanding of this funding source and provides a foundation of advocacy for occupational therapy practitioners to support people with IDDs with living, as well as aging, in the community rather than in institutions. An expansion of environmental modifications in HCBS for people with IDDs aligns with the aim of Medicaid HCBS waivers to promote community integration, self-determination, and independence, which are all benefits of environmental modifications. Importance: The importance of developing age-friendly environments is globally recognized. However, few clinical trials have comprehensively evaluated physical and social components of environments and examined the effects of offering support. Objective: To clarify the effectiveness of occupational therapy–based comprehensive environmental support for community-dwelling older adults. Design: A single-blind parallel-groups randomized controlled trial with blinded participants. Setting: Eight community-based settings under the long-term-care insurance system in regional towns and cities throughout Japan. Participants: Sixty older adults age ≥65 yr who were new users of adult day care or adult day health care and allocated by stratified block randomization on the basis of age. Intervention: Comprehensive environmental support was provided to participants for 3 mo according to results on the Comprehensive Environmental Questionnaire for older adults (CEQ) to make improvements in environmental factors participants wanted to change to create a more satisfying life. Outcomes and Measures: The primary outcome measure was the Japanese Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF–36) score at 3 mo postrandomization. Additionally, scores on the Short-Form Six-Dimension utility index were calculated. Results: The experimental group showed significant improvements in the SF–36's Role/Social Component Summary (p =.005) and Role–Physical (p =.02), Role–Emotional (p =.01), and Mental Health (p =.05) domains, with moderate effect sizes. The number needed to treat was 3.46, showing statistical significance. Conclusions and Relevance: Occupational therapy–based comprehensive environmental support based on CEQ scores was effective, resulting in moderate improvements in health-related quality of life among community-dwelling older adults. These problems make it challenging for older adults to perform valuable occupations, thus reducing their quality of life. Weekly and consistent physical activity can help minimize the risk of preventable disease and improve mental health and cognitive function among adults. Despite these benefits, adults with visual impairments tend to not meet physical activity recommendations. The purpose of this preliminary study was to examine how neighbourhood walk score (walkability) is associated with weekly walking minutes in adults with visual impairments. Participants were recruited from two visual impairment–related listservs in the United States. A total of 88 participants (aged 22–85 years; 78% female) were included. Participants completed an online survey including demographic, walking duration, and zip code questions. Linear regression analyses were performed to determine whether there were significant associations between walkability and weekly walking minutes. Walkability scores were not significantly related to walking minutes per week (p =.84), but age was negatively associated with walking minutes per week (β = −.16), holding other factors constant. Neighbourhood walkability was not significantly associated with walking minutes per week among adults with visual impairments in this study. As these adults age, the amount of walking decreased. Future research in this line of inquiry should expand to include other variables that may influence the relationship between walkability and walking minutes per week and examine the barriers to physical activity among individuals with visual impairments. Traditional qualitative inquiry research methods exhort us to look for the 'good' story tellers who use metaphors to describe their experiences, emotions, and events. This privileges abled-bodied individuals, meaning that without full individual accessibility for people with disability is not achieved. The objective of this paper is to present a case study on inclusion of research participants who live with deafblindness. This case study posits where qualitative story telling spaces currently are; whose voices occupy these narratives; what is said and how it is said: and the performative aspects of the qualitative inquiry currently. Research including people with disability is reflected in the evidence base, however the question that if qualitative methods don't seek to explore and understand these differences, epistemic injustices will be perpetrated. The case study reflects on a research project whose methodology sought to solicit hospital experiences for those living with deafblindness. The Australian study of 18 deafblind participants with wide ranging communication needs, shared in-depth narrative inquiry stories told in: 'snapshots' of moments of disempowerment; through sign and vibrotactile communication; usage of the strong verb with metaphor rarely present except to exclusively describe instances of dehumanisation. Narrative inquiry method when used with people who are deafblind is predominately chaotic with some tense instability for non-signing participants. Emphasis is via repetition, altered pitch and expletives. Touch centricity is fundamental. Dissonance is evident between words used and stories told. The thematic analysis identified a need to reflect epistemically across the creation of any qualitative project from beginning to end, focussing on what is being said and how it is being said or signed or felt. The conclusion of the paper provides a roadmap for future projects to ensure improvements in the enhancing of awareness of different ways of being, doing and telling in qualitative research methods. Introduction: Around 16% of world's population lives with visible and invisible disabilities. People with disabilities' participation may be limited because of the environmental obstacles. Moreover, historic heritage places were built before the development of accessibility standards and the rights of people living with disabilities and the majority were not designed to be accessible. Access to historic heritage places is important for carrying out the activities in place but also to create and reinforce identity. The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of people with visible and invisible disabilities when visiting heritage sites considering accessibility issues. Methods: This study is a qualitative interpretive description. Participants were adults with visible (e.g., motor disability) or invisible (e.g., autism) disabilities. For data collection, go along interviews (also referred to in the literature as "walking interview" in two different locations in the Historic District of Old Quebec in Quebec City were conducted. Thematic analysis was done. Results: Twenty-one participants completed two go along interviews: one in the Séminaire de Québec (Seminary of Quebec City) and the other in Petit-Champlain and Place Royale areas of Quebec City. Three themes emerged: (1) Obstacles and impact on participation; (2) Disabling accessibility; and (3) Heritage meaning. Discussion: The barriers identified by participants are diverse and differ according to the person and the type of disability. However, social and leisure activities were particularly limited, despite the strategies developed by some participants. Participants in the study demonstrated an interest in accessing to heritage places, therefore it seems essential to consider the needs of people with disabilities when developing accessibility solutions, and to seek a balance between preserving heritage and promoting inclusive and equitable access for all. With the progress of China's economy, there is an increasing focus on accessibility systems. Enhancements to accessibility infrastructure are being implemented in all types of structures, with a particular focus on educational institutions such as college campuses. This research was carried out to examine the campus accessibility system of Northeastern University's Nanhu and Hunnan Campuses in Shenyang City, China, using failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) as a methodology and using incorporating fuzzy control, which overcomes the limitations of traditional FMEA. Fuzzy-FMEA integrates the fuzzy linguistic assessment to assist the analysis process, in contrast to standard analysis which mainly relies on subjective judgment. Through calculations, it is known that ramps, barrier-free toilets, and barrier-free entrances are the items with the highest failure modes. The construction of the campus accessible environment needs to prioritize solving the problems of these facilities. The research results also found that there is a lack of research specifications for accessible environments in China's cold regions, and universal specifications are not fully suitable. The accessibility of the new campus was improved and management was improved, reflecting the school's increased awareness of accessible environment construction in recent years. However, there are still many common problems in the old and new campuses, proving that they are not aware of the importance and urgency of improving these problems. In addition, the construction of barrier-free facilities in the administrative office buildings where management and faculty are located on both campuses is generally in good condition. The accessible design of dormitories and canteens commonly used by students is often ignored. Moreover, the rough detailing in many buildings prevents these facilities from being used properly. Society today is experiencing a golden age of robotic space exploration and interest in human spaceflight has regained popularity as entities like NASA and the burgeoning private space industry refocus attention on sending humans back to the Moon and into orbit. This is a critical turning point for society, as some look to our future as a possibly spacefaring civilization while others wonder who will be enabled to participate in that space exploration. Historically, Disabled individuals and other minoritized groups have been excluded from space science and technology fields, as well as from participation in astronaut programs. However, human space exploration can be made more inclusive with research and innovation in the area of accessible design. Universal accessible design brings advantages to all individuals operating in an environment, and the ability of Disabled individuals to adapt to environments not suited for them can be leveraged as a strength in spaceflight. In this work, disabled and mixed ability crews performed research on parabolic zero-gravity flights which produce weightlessness, exploring tools and technologies which may mitigate challenges for disabled individuals operating in space-like environments. Here we discuss the experiments performed on our flights, highlighting what types of technologies offer promising solutions for accessible design of space habitats, suits, and tools, and accommodations which can enable future disabled astronauts to operate safely in space. We will highlight universal design solutions that not only provide access to previously excluded researchers but have the potential to improve safety and efficiency for all astronauts, regardless of disability. Digital game technologies, that is, games and emerging game-based applications, are pervasively spread in society as a means of entertainment, education and exercise, amongst other uses. With this popularity, attention has been directed towards the accessibility of these technologies to people with disabilities to ensure equity, equal access to opportunities and realize earnings from a significant customer group. This study investigates: How is the attention of academic game accessibility research divided across game technologies, disability categories and use domains? And where is attention needed? To answer these questions, I conducted a review of research (162 manuscripts) on game technologies' accessibility published between 2016 and 2020, inclusive. The reviewed literature appears to have a utility focus (e.g. on education and health management) that relatively de-emphasizes the importance of game accessibility for entertainment or fun purposes. Auditory, motor and mobility disabilities, and emerging gamification, exergames, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are especially under researched in the academic domain. Introduction: The creation of age‐friendly home environments enables middle‐aged and older aged people to live independently at home while adapting to age‐related changes. Little is currently known about existing home hazards that may potentially hinder healthy older people as they age. Methods: Prospective cohort study of healthy adults who received an age‐friendly home environment assessment conducted by an occupational therapist. Adults aged 60 and over, without significant disability, living in homes within metropolitan Adelaide, South Australia were recruited through community advertising. Results: Sixty age‐friendly home environment assessments were conducted. Common areas where potential hazards were identified, and modifications recommended were bathrooms, toilets and backyards. Gardens were commonly identified as potentially requiring modifications in the future. Participants were more likely to consider moving to new housing if additional modifications were needed to their homes. Conclusion: Affordable and accessible age‐friendly housing is required to support an ageing population. Despite the increase of users of Mobility Assistive Devices (MobAD), there has been a lack of accessibility in urban environments in many parts of the world. We present a systematic review of how the inaccessible design of public spaces affects quality-of-life – including aspects of health and safety, independence, and social participation – of MobAD users. We conducted a literature search in three databases (i.e., Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed) and initially discovered 3980 publications. We analysed 48 peer-reviewed journal articles published in English from 2005 to 2021 and assessed their quality of evidence via the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. Findings indicated a substantial number of inaccessible elements for MobAD users in public spaces. Pathway characteristics, boarding ramps, entrance features, confined spaces, and service surfaces were deemed to be the least accessible elements. These barriers had multifaceted effects on MobAD users' quality of life with aspects of physical health, mobility, and use of public transport being most affected. Notwithstanding that the reviewed studies mostly ocused on wheelchair users residing in high-income countries, this review outlines the critical role of the design of the built environment as a factor of disablement for MobAD users. We conclude by highlighting a few recommendations for future research and practice, especially inclusive approaches and adaptive techniques to assist MobAD users with performing tasks in public spaces independently. Users of Mobility Assistive Devices experience a lack of accessibility provisions in public open spaces and buildings internationally. Physical barriers in public spaces substantially diminish the health and safety, autonomy, and social participation of users of Mobility Assistive Devices. There is a definite need for the adoption of inclusive strategies and adaptive techniques in placemaking processes so that users of Mobility Assistive Devices can have equitable access to public spaces. The overall aim of this study was to describe experiences of discrimination due to inaccessibility among people using mobility devices. We conducted a thematic qualitative analysis of 88 complaints about wheeled mobility device use, inaccessibility, and discrimination submitted to the Swedish Equality Ombudsman (DO) during 2015 and 2016. The analysis resulted in three themes: instigating change by invoking laws and regulations and highlighting lack of compliance; demanding to be recognised, understood, and listened to; and struggling for equal access and social participation. Regulations and treaties were invoked as the basis for complaints by people using mobility devices regarding their lack of access to physical environments and impediments to their enjoyment of their full right to participate in and contribute to society. The complaints described feelings of discrimination, the disadvantages and exclusion due to physical inaccessibility, and experiences of being prevented from living one's life as others do. Complaints filed by people using mobility devices showed that they were denied access to a wide range of contexts, including offices, theatres, restaurants, schools, and public transportation, though they desired to live an active and social life outside their homes. Filing a complaint was a way to take action, highlight present inaccessibility, and express a hope for change. Difficulties experienced by people using wheeled mobility devices can reveal knowledge important for revising existing design and renovation standards for housing and public buildings. Documenting facilitators and barriers in different environments is important for giving voice to the needs of wheeled mobility device users and revealing standards that need to be strongly enforced or revised. People using wheeled mobility devices should be supported in finding solutions in inaccessible environments, both to fulfil their wishes and to enable their participation in society. This study aims to examine how visually impaired students navigate university examinations, identifying the obstacles they encounter and proposing ways to improve accessibility. The accessibility of examination systems for students with visual impairments is a critical issue in higher education, requiring ongoing efforts to ensure equitable academic opportunities. Participants included 10 visually impaired students from the Department of Special Education at the University of Education, Lahore, enrolled in various higher education programs. Using qualitative methods, specifically focus group discussions, the study examined their experiences and aspirations regarding examination accessibility. Findings reveal significant issues such as delays in obtaining Braille versions, difficulties with complex diagrams, and improperly formatted digital texts. While assistive technologies like screen readers and Braille displays are helpful, they often face technical issues, highlighting the need for regular updates and better technical support. Recommendations include the timely provision of accessible materials, increased availability of support personnel, enhanced communication, and practice sessions with accommodations to boost preparedness and confidence.
