Postdoctoral fellowships (PDFs) are becoming increasingly common yet remain nebulous to many. The purpose of this research has been to investigate the structures and experiences of PDFs for fellows and supervisors in physical education and sport sciences/kinesiology (PESSK) internationally. Fourteen fellows and five supervisors participated in one-to-one semi-structured interviews. Data were thematically analyzed and interpreted through Dewey's theory of experience. Findings revealed participants understood PDFs in relation to doctoral education and as preparation for academic careers. Reasons for engaging included ambitions for new contexts and mentorship, unprepared or unable to secure faculty employment, and facilitating professional learning. Challenges related to low salaries, family considerations, structural and institutional obstacles, international barriers, and high turnover. Perceived values included professional and personal growth and fellows as a learning, relationship, and productivity resource for supervisors. While kinesiology scholars have focused on how future faculty members are socialized, recruited into, and prepared for academia, limited attention has been given to the apprenticeship of observation for faculty roles when college students first develop impressions and initial understandings of faculty work. This qualitative study aimed to understand undergraduate kinesiology students' perceptions and beliefs about faculty roles and careers in higher education. Data were collected from 58 undergraduate kinesiology students at a large doctoral-granting institution in the Midwest region of the U.S. The findings were communicated through three themes: (a) incomplete understanding of faculty work limits motivation to pursue faculty careers; (b) positive associations but distal relationships with faculty through coursework; and (c) research involvement fosters an understanding of research process and faculty work. In this reflective piece, the author, a Latino librarian with 25 years of experience in academic libraries, explores the challenges and opportunities surrounding diversity and inclusion within the profession. Through personal anecdotes and historical context, the author highlights the persistent underrepresentation of Latinx librarians in academic settings and the growing importance of addressing this disparity, particularly in response to the demographic shifts in the United States. The establishment of the REFORMA Academic Librarians Advancing Service (ALAS) committee emerges as a pivotal initiative aimed at empowering Latinx librarians and better serving Latinx student populations. Drawing inspiration from mentors and predecessors, the author emphasizes the need for proactive measures from library deans and directors to support initiatives like ALAS, promote cultural competency, and foster diversity within their institutions. By fostering inclusivity, representation, cultural competency, and equitable access to knowledge, the profession can evolve to reflect the diversity of the communities it serves. This article presents a discussion on generative artificial intelligence use in academia from the editors of the Academy of Management Journal. Topics include applications of generative artificial intelligence in academics--including knowledge synthesis and knowledge translation--as well as scenario planning of its use with varying levels of systems transparency and societal regulation.

The COVID-19 pandemic had an impact on schools all over the world. The new norm in academia was a reduction in teaching and learning activities. Teachers around the world were challenged to come up with innovative ways to help students during the COVID-19 pandemic. This phenomenological study aimed to understand the challenges faced by newly hired teachers during the limited face-to-face classes for the school year 2022-2023. Data gathered from participants may provide useful insight on how educators navigate the phenomenon despite being unprepared. The study utilized a qualitative research design using a phenomenological approach with twenty (20) purposefully selected newly hired teachers who experienced the limited face-to-face class. Moreover, the newly hired teachers were from public schools, both in the elementary and high school departments. They underwent in-depth interviews and focus group discussions (FGD) using the validated research instrument. The results of the study were recorded based on the experiences of the teachers, including the challenges they encountered. Emergent themes were formulated: Rejoicing in the Reopening of Classes, Anticipating Challenges, Collaborating with Iniatives, Adhering the Protocol, Meticulous in Tasking and Efficient Communication. On the coping mechanisms, teachers showed strength guided by mission and focus on purpose. Themes were formulated, such as Requesting for Assistance, Receiving Compliments, Sharing of Commitment, Emanating Positivity and Growth, Open Communication and Developing Success. Finally, as to their insights, notable emergent themes were formulated as follows: Receptive to Feedback, Valuing Responsibilities, Accepting Imperfections, Proficiency in Decision Making, Possessing Empathy and Kindness, Enhancing Instructional Methods. ABSTRACT This study explored the experiences of women who are academics working in UK higher education (HE), using a feminist approach and narrative methods and analysis. The purpose of the research was to explore the experiences of women, with a view to highlighting potential shared experiences, informing the policies of universities and adding to the body of knowledge on women in HE. Findings include narrative themes around gender roles, male‐dominated academia and life‐stage impact on career. Concluding recommendations include meaningful recognition of pastoral roles and promotion tracks which value these skills and support for women's life stages, including maternity, motherhood, menopause and sandwich caring. AbstractCommunity group buying (CGB) has shown exponential development recently because of the widespread use of social commerce and e-commerce. As a result of its popularity, the field has received increasing attention from academia, leading to a plethora of empirical studies to comprehend CGB and the elements that influence it. Therefore, reviewing the existing literature to identify potential gaps and future research opportunities becomes vital. Our study conducts a systematic literature review of CGB. We followed the PRISMA protocol, which generated 288 articles. Application of inclusion and exclusion criteria selected 41 studies for the detailed analysis. We analyzed the features of CGB from three perspectives: group leader, logistics, and localization, summarized five categories of antecedents (self-related, online-related, quality-related, operations-related, and risk-related), and identified two types of consequences (attitudinal, behavioral) of customers’ participation. Several research gaps are identified, and corresponding research directions in the future are uncovered. Finally, we discuss the theoretical contribution and limitations of the study. It has become a common challenge on how to measure radiation patterns of massive antenna arrays working at high frequency with high efficiency and accuracy, which has attracted huge interest from both academia and industry. In this paper, a highly accurate and efficient far field (FF) pattern reconstruction strategy through conducting single cut near field (NF) to FF transformation algorithm based on spherical wave expansion (SWE) is proposed for fast measurements of large base stations (BSs) operating at mid-band. Our objective is to design a compact multi-probe setup to measure key radiation parameters of the massive array, with low-cost and high-efficiency. A BS of 16 × 16 elements operating at mid-band is adopted as the device under test (DUT) in this paper. Analysis is conducted on the impact of measurement distance, sampling range and sampling density on the reconstruction accuracy of the algorithm in the compact multi-probe anechoic chamber setup, demonstrating that the required key information of the main lobe of the DUT can be accurately reconstructed when the measurement range R = 1/20 FF distance, sampling resolution ∆θ = 3°, and sampling range θ ∈ [75°, 105°] are selected, respectively. The impact of phase center offset on the accuracy of FF pattern reconstruction is analyzed when only one sub-array is enabled, demonstrating the effectiveness of the algorithm for sub-array measurements. ABSTRACT Different cultures have distinct conceptions of knowledge and ways of defining, generating and communicating knowledge. Therefore, multilingualism in academia has been shown to be instrumental in preserving the various systems of knowledge, equality of opportunity in science and enhancing the international competitiveness of scholars whose native language is not the lingua franca. The actors of translation and the strategies they work with (domestication and foreignisation) play a unique role in this, as their decisions may foster or hinder linguistic and epistemic diversity. Despite its pronounced significance, however, relatively little is known about the stereotypical competences required for academic translation. As translation in science is not merely a philological issue, this conceptual study follows a consilient approach and integrates the outcomes of research from several disciplines and research perspectives to propose a theory‐based, multi‐componential model of academic translation competence as a macrocompetence. Based on the model, a conceptual definition of the construct of academic translation competence is provided to identify what exactly is to be observed and measured for its study and to generate preliminary hypotheses related to the construct. Utilizing electrons directly offers significant potential for advancing organic synthesis by facilitating novel reactivity and enhancing selectivity under mild conditions. As a result, an increasing number of organic chemists are exploring electrosynthesis. However, the efficacy of electrochemical transformations depends critically on the design of the electrochemical cell. Batch cells often suffer from limitations such as large inter-electrode distances and poor mass transfer, making flow cells a promising alternative. Implementing flow cells, however, requires a foundational understanding of microreactor technology. In this review, we briefly outline the applications of flow electrosynthesis before providing a comprehensive examination of existing flow reactor technologies. Our goal is to equip organic chemists with the insights needed to tailor their electrochemical flow cells to meet specific reactivity requirements effectively. We also highlight the application of reactor designs in scaling up electrochemical processes and integrating high-throughput experimentation and automation. There is convincing evidence that the learning environments digitalization of tools and equipment ultimately results in the speed and depth learning involvement of academia members, by raising attainment of each of the digital learning experiences. The majority of the research that was conducted on the topic of enhancing the digital skills of learners, which would ultimately lead to an increase in their active engagement, was conducted on students in primary and secondary education, leaving members of higher education outside of the scope of the study. Given the uninterrupted search for academic performance and innovation, the current research considers the technological changes that lead to the transformation of the traditional academic learning environments as previously known. The current paper considers the changes in the learners' engagement in the context of the dually digital transformation of the higher academic multi-institutional digitally-learning enhancements. An important factor to be considered regards the leadership evolution (in terms of teaching) that over time, led to a different speed contextual shift, according to its effectiveness, leading to higher or lower students learning (dis)engagement. The current manuscript aims to examine how the higher education digitalization levels could affect the student's learning engagement, under the close monitoring of the academia leadership styles practice. Data collection and analysis implied at first a qualitative approach by issuing an online-distributed survey that resulted in a number of 2272 valid responses. After performing structural equation modelling and proving a valid assessment tool, the analysis resulted into statistically proving the validity of two main hypotheses according to which students learning engagement has a positive effect on the practice of academic leadership. Additionally, results emphasized the fact that higher education digitalization has altogether a negative effect of students learning engagement. Consequently, the current study stresses on the importance of different peers' categories in the context of higher education institutions performance, with an emphasis on the different levels of students' engagement and the leadership styles evolution and practice, aspects uniformly developing within a continuously digitally transformation of the higher education environment. Decolonial studies, initiated by Southern scholars, scrutinize the coloniality of power, knowledge, and being as a constitutive condition of Western modernity, and explicate otherwise suppressed non-Western onto-epistemes. This paper examines Chinese academia's ‘building Chinese education’ as a decolonial, ‘self-awakening’, effort against the Euro-centric global structure of knowledge (re)production. Reading into 334 journal articles published between 2004 and 2023 and housed in the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database, we first pinpoint a state-academia governing matrix that imbricates Chinese intellectuals as establishment and participative scholars. We next untangle three interpellations that scaffold the Chinese education construction discourses: (a) East-indigenization and West-globalization, (b) tradition-past and modernity-present, and (c) theory and practice. In so doing, we explicate eugenic disordering, representational signification, and theorycide as onto-epistemic flashpoints confronting Chinese academia's self-awakening efforts against Western modernity-coloniality. In this paper we move from considering the chair as an (inanimate) object, to exploring its vitality through a more vibrant and active reading of this inescapable everyday item. We are inspired by feminist new materialism and how affect shapes our understanding of matter. Reading matter in this way surfaces our orientations toward everyday items that show embodied practices of mattering. This, in turn, shines light on how we imbue objects with meaning, and how objects exceed these designations and categorisations to form new unbounded relations with the world. We focus on affective and symbolic meanings to consider different types of chairs, the spaces they occupy, and who comes to sit in them. For example, the empty chair expects an arrival; the occupied chair raises questions related to place and hospitality. Exploring whose bodies occupy an academic chair enables us to understand our embodied relationships with objects and work. We use personal experiences to engage in acts of experimental writing, reflecting on our lived experiences, and combining philosophical musings that bring the chair to life. By re-thinking our relationships to chairs, we invite the reader to resist the urge to dismiss them as mundane pieces of furniture worthy of only function or dismissal, and instead foster an openness that expands consideration of the material relations that travel across bodies and nonhuman kin. 3D printing has garnered significant attention across academia and industry due to its capability to design and fabricate complex architectures. Applications such as those requiring intricate geometries or custom designs, including footwear, healthcare, energy storage, and electronics applications, greatly benefit from exploiting 3D printing processes. Despite the recent advancement of structural 3D printing, its use in functional devices remains limited, requiring the need for the development of functional materials suitable for 3D printing in device fabrication. In this review, we briefly introduce various 3D printing techniques, including material extrusion and vat polymerization, and highlight the recent advances in 3D printing for energy and biomedical devices. A summary of future perspectives in this area is also presented. Offshore wind has rapidly developed over the past three decades, with over 6000 fixed-bottom substructures installed in Europe alone as of 2022. Despite this progress, there has been limited focus on the end-of-life stages, particularly decommissioning, which is currently the default option. Sustainable offshore wind development hinges on effective decommissioning strategies for fixed-steel pile foundations. This review critically examines state-of-the-art pile-foundation-decommissioning methods recently tested in industry and academia, including partial-removal techniques like internal cutting and external cutting and full-removal approaches such as excavation and novel extraction methods. Key factors influencing decommissioning decisions, such as seabed disturbance, environmental impact, reuse potential, and cost, are discussed. Analyses reveal that current partial-removal strategies could render vast swaths of marine areas inaccessible for future development. In contrast, full removal through extraction may enable complete recycling and minimise post-decommissioning monitoring. However, significant knowledge gaps remain regarding novel extraction methods' scalability, technical feasibility, and economics. Extensive research encompassing engineering, environmental, and economic dimensions is essential to develop holistic pile-foundation-decommissioning solutions that facilitate the sustainable long-term growth of offshore wind. This study sought to increase understanding on barriers to securing academic employment met by people with disabilities. Lindsay and Fuentes [2022. "It is Time to Address Ableism in Academia: A Systematic Review of the Experiences and Impact of Ableism among Faculty and Staff." Disabilities 2 (2): 178–203] pointed out the paucity of research on disability in academia. We surveyed over 5,000 authors of scholarly articles with 'disab' in the title and with UK or USA academic email addresses. People with disabilities were asked to describe barriers they met, and people without disabilities to describe barriers they believed that people with disabilities faced. The responses were classified according to the category of barrier. We found examples of 11 categories of barrier, indicating that a wide range of factors contribute to barriers to academic employment. The most common categories of barrier in responses by people with disabilities were attitudinal barriers, inadequate provision of reasonable adjustment, and excessive workload. Moreover, the frequencies of categories of barrier vary greatly with impairment. We consider the possible ramifications of our study for addressing the barriers to academic employment, the understanding of the nature of disability and methodology. Scholarly publishing has been shaped by the pressure of a liquid economy to become an exercise in branding more than a vehicle for the advancement of science. The current revolution in artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to make matters worse. The new generation of large language models (LLMs) have shown impressive capabilities in text generation and are already being used to write papers, grants, peer review reports, code for analyses, and even perform literature reviews. Although these models can be used in positive ways, the metrics and pressures of academia, along with our dysfunctional publishing system, stimulate their indiscriminate and uncritical use to speed up research outputs. Thus, LLMs are likely to amplify the worst incentives of academia, greatly increasing the volume of scientific literature while diluting its quality. At present, no effective solutions are evident to overcome this grim scenario, and nothing short of a cultural revolution within academia will be needed to realign the practice of science with its traditional ideal of a rigorous search for truth. In science and academia, success is often shaped by both knowledge and networking. Reflecting on nearly two decades in academic research, I recount my experience as a postdoctoral immunologist returning to Australia with limited local connections and support. Upon re‐establishing myself in Australia, I initially faced barriers that restricted my visibility and collaborations. A turning point came when personal challenges motivated me to actively network, leading to valuable collaborations and career opportunities. By initiating conversations with academic leaders and peers, I expanded my network and established numerous leadership roles, even as a "junior" postdoc through founding a symposium, engaging with an immunology society, volunteering on various academic and advocacy committees, contributing to public outreach and nationally advocating for gender equity in science. These experiences reinforced that networking is about fostering meaningful relationships and creating opportunities to grow professionally. I provide advice on how to increase your networks by volunteering at work, when attending conferences, through contributing to societies and building a social media presence. My journey highlights the importance of being proactive in building networks, which can open doors, amplify one's voice, and drive career advancement in science and academia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bullying during the peer review process is an overlooked form of academic bullying. Measures to limit its negative impact are insufficient, necessitating new initiatives to protect individuals and the integrity of science. This paper considers some of the hidden challenges which may be faced by the neurodiverse academic. The neurodiverse academic, at times, can be seen as something 'hidden', remaining undisclosed due to the challenges which can be faced by making this declaration to colleagues and employers. As a result, our voices are often not heard, and, thus, the difficulties we face overlooked. This has begun to be addressed for the student within higher education, but not the academic. Within this paper I, therefore, reflect on my experience as a dyslexic academic. I consider the challenges of excess labour, increasingly needed to 'make it' in academia today, the pressures this creates and impact on mental health. I, also, highlight the divergence, from non-disabled colleagues, which can exist in access to development opportunities. I provide this account to challenge assumptions and spur a research agenda. Our paper aims to consider how hybrid academic conferences can create inclusive spaces for knowledge exchange. The paper begins by considering the purpose of academic conferences and identifying the groups of people excluded when conferences are run in an in-person-only format. Reasons for exclusion include being disabled, being a carer, being unable to travel (e.g. in the final trimester of pregnancy), being unable to secure a VISA, or being unable to access funds to cover travel and accommodation costs. Next, we consider the existing challenges that individuals and event organizers face concerning academic conferences. Then, pragmatic opportunities for event organizers are presented, making the case for running conferences in a hybrid format. The paper concludes with a call to action for promoting care democracy in the workplace by addressing the humanity deficit and the unheard voice of academics currently excluded from in-person-only academic conferences. This article contributes to the debate on coloniality (Quijano 2000a, b) by analysing the case of Libya, an Italian colony from 1911 to 1943. It demonstrates how the triple form of domination – ontological, epistemological and political-military-administrative – to which Libya was subjected during Italian colonisation, has survived its end and persists to this day in the relations between Libya and the Western world. From an ontological perspective, the Italians developed a racist representation of the Libyans, which was both the cause and the consequence of a conscious disregard of its specificities. Today, domination endures in the label attributed to Libya as a 'failed state', along with a general disinterest in the complexity of its history and society. From an epistemological perspective, the production of knowledge about Libya was dominated by Western scholars. This led to a Western perspective in which the agency of the Libyans was often neglected and to the spread of analytical and conceptual frameworks that serve the imperialistic claims of Western powers. Some of these colonialist analytical frameworks still exist in academia today. From a political-military-administrative perspective, the tendency of the Italians to exacerbate internal divisions while simultaneously imposing an inefficient model of a unified state remains relevant. Critical thinking is essential in academia and the workforce. Although writing can be used as a pedagogical tool for fostering deeper subject matter understanding, increased retention, and critical thinking, relatively few science courses are writing based. This writing-based introductory science course provided an opportunity for students to learn biology content through writing while also developing critical thinking skills. In this undergraduate introductory biology course, a learning progression framework was applied to writing assignments in order to promote critical thinking. Early course assignments focused on lower-order critical thinking, including information gathering and concept connecting activities, and served as the foundation for writing an evaluative research paper (REP) that required the application and analysis of biology content knowledge within different contexts. Based on the analysis of REP assignments using standardized criteria for assessing critical thinking, students were found to significantly increase their ability to demonstrate critical thinking. Students also became more aware of their critical thinking development, made stronger connections between concepts and applications in other contexts, and displayed measurable increases in critical thinking from their first to final drafts of their papers. This article presents our "multi‐vocal memory work" of collaborative researching and writing experiences as women academics in UK Business Schools. Set against the backdrop of the broken neoliberal academy, we use Daoism as an analytical lens to identify two emergent themes: 1) emotional contradictions and 2) institutional and social structures: micro‐creative and collective change. Examining ourselves and the academy as broken, we learn to find beauty in the flaws as they signify healing. Thus, sharing our emotions and vulnerability through collective research and writing enables us to "put ourselves back together." Methodologically, we draw on memory work to explore different ways of researching and writing. We argue that there is emergent hope in identifying and raising the profile of growing spaces within the academy for alternative forms of writing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The concept of social infrastructure has experienced a rapid rise to prominence in recent years, both in academia and in policy. In this article, we explore a case study of cages (also known as Multi‐Use Games Areas) in Hackney, North‐East London. We argue that cages are forms of urban infrastructure which can facilitate multiple forms of sociality—especially for young people—and can thus be deemed valuable social infrastructure. However, this value can only be understood in context—in relation to the joys and harms of growing up in Hackney—and as in contest—the status and meaning of the cage is different for different groups, and there are considerable tensions over their use, ownership, and management. Robotics is a vast and growing area in academia and industry, and it is used to solve human problems through artificial intelligent machines. To solve crucial issues or problems such as the survivability of humans in mining, living in Antarctica, Space, mountainous regions, and other challenging terrains, we need an intelligent machine. Working with multiple robots is more beneficial than with a single robot. This article proposed a method to search and track the target in an unknown environment through a multi-agent system using a nature-inspired algorithm (NIA). Here, the location of the target is either known or unknown. To reach the target, mobile agents use two types of movement, either directional-based movement or nature-inspired algorithm-based movement. Directional-based movements help the mobile agents decide the point of interest to move. The nature-inspired algorithm (NIA) based movement helps the agents explore the area in the provided direction. This work uses particle swarm optimization (PSO), bacteria foraging optimization (BFO), and bat algorithm (BA) NIA for the exploration of the area. The proposed method has been tested in simple and complex environments. From the experimental analysis, the proposed method successfully tracks or searches the target in an unknown environment. The experiments show that the agent movement behavior is affected by some factors such as the complexity of the environment, number of agents, sensor range, etc. The results indicate that the bat algorithm outperforms the other two algorithms in terms of fast time completion. Purpose: This paper aims to explore how a new type of workplace training program can be created that truly enables participants to move from words to action. Recognizing the need to understand trainee–work environment dynamics the authors criticize training efforts that center on targeted learning events, instead highlighting the role of preparation and following up. In doing so, the authors tackle the lack of guidance practitioners experience when designing and implementing workplace training programs. The authors collect data through interviews (21), field notes of participant observation (3 occasions), participant-produced written materials and a feedback survey. Findings: The authors find that restorative practices, workplace mediation and reteaming enhance the participants' perceptions of self-efficacy and agency. Throughout the training program, facilitators observe the dynamics of the situation and take part in discussions to encourage exploration and reflection. Thus, facilitators likely need a coaching mindset. Originality/value: The theoretical contribution stems from an in-depth exploration of trainee–work environment dynamics and novel insights brought to workplace training from adjacent fields of research. The driving forces that enable firms to achieve better environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance have been a popular topic in academia. However, in the context of increasing numbers of entrepreneurial teams engaging in green entrepreneurship, whether a green entrepreneurial orientation (GEO) enhances ESG performance from an overall strategic orientation is still unclear. If so, what are the mechanisms by which a GEO influences ESG performance? To determine the potential relationship and influencing mechanism between a GEO and ESG performance, we use Chinese listed firms from 2009 to 2022 as our research sample and fixed effects and difference‐in‐difference models to explore how a GEO affects ESG performance. The results show that a GEO significantly and positively affects ESG performance, especially for nonstate‐owned enterprises (nonSOEs), firms with high digital transformation, and firms in the manufacturing industry. Further research shows that participation in contractual strategic alliances (SAs) can strengthen the effect of a GEO on ESG performance. Moreover, we find that a GEO can efficiently encourage firms to engage in contractual SAs, that the link between the two is moderated by financial constraints (FCs) in an inverse‐U manner, and that this relationship is evident only for nonSOEs. In conclusion, our study provides a nuanced understanding of how a GEO, contractual SAs, and FCs collectively shape corporate ESG activities and elucidates their far‐reaching implications for enhancing ESG performance. In this paper, we show how capitalism and feudalism reinforce each other to enable the former's success in the higher education context. In this regard, Polish universities are an interesting case due to Poland's capitalist shock therapy in the 1990s, its Western European membership in the European Union in the 2000s and due to recent reforms intended to modernize Polish academia. Based on 36 interviews with Polish early career academics from urban universities with experience working in watchdogs of higher education, we examine respondents' perspectives on the current capitalist reforms. They treat ongoing changes as a solution for the problems experienced and defined as "feudal": political labeling, abuse of power and discrimination against women. Understanding capitalism and feudalism through their organizing principles, the main contribution of this study is that it demonstrates how capitalist organizing principles fix existing feudalist organizing principles to flourish in Polish university. Hence, it is difficult for early career academics to recognize that capitalist organizing principles are in fact reinforcing rather than eliminating (as the advocates of capitalist reforms often claim) feudal problems in Polish academia. Can meaningful connections between academics, consultants, and practitioners of workplace democracy be created to bring about critically inspired change? This article presents an exploration of our experiment in producing a practical and engaged form of Critical Management Studies (CMS) through a case study of a 2-day event. The event brought together academics, consultants, and practitioners of workplace democracy to examine the possibilities and challenges of creating meaningful connections between these groups. It served as a platform for investigating and reflecting on the efforts made to bridge the gap between academia and practice in CMS. Drawing on pre-event documents, recordings of the event and interviews with participants after the event, we provide an account of academics out of their comfort zone struggling to feel authentic and useful; suspicion and uneasiness between groups leading to inter and intra group struggles; and lingering difficulties around power and control. Our event suggests that CMS scholars seeking more practical engagement should pursue a: (i) deliberative research perspective of co-production alongside multiple stakeholders (academics, consultants, and practitioners) to practically seek to bring about change; (ii) democratization of the research process so that the democratic intentions of the research outcomes are built into the research process; (iii) fluid research position breaking down and blurring of boundaries between academics and practitioners to increase the possibilities for creating meaningful connections. Based on interviews of 20 accounting chairs, we examine chairs' perceptions of current challenges facing accounting academia and the chairs individually. Overall, the most significant issue facing accounting programs today is declining enrollments and students' negative perceptions of accounting, with low pay in accounting as a major element. Key challenges facing chairs individually relate to enrollment declines and students' negative perceptions of accounting, heavy workload, faculty hiring, department culture, and motivating faculty. We further examine enrollment and research issues, including how programs are attempting to address enrollment declines, emerging impacts of enrollment declines, often somewhat nebulous research standards (including recognition of practitioner publications), and a growing collection of research impact measures. Drawing on the conceptual metaphor WOMAN IS FOOD, the present article aims to offer a fresh perspective on the representation of predatory conduct in American campus fiction and on the attendant manipulation of the meaning and essence of femininity. More precisely, it investigates how Thomas H. Chippering, the overly and overtly lecherous professor-cum-narrator in Tim O'Brien's Tomcat in Love (1998), straddling town and gown and armed with the self-bestowed authority to set rules and assign roles, pigeonholes his female students and acquaintances as edible objects and proceeds to edge them towards his plate and palate, as it were. The persistent utilization of culinary images and analogies in the novel underscores the extent to which prejudices and stereotypes are ingrained in language, thought, and action. On the other hand, individual and collective female resistance augurs well for the possibility of warding off unwanted sexual advances and innuendo, weeding out predators, and fostering easy coexistence of the sexes inside and outside academia. Similarly, it is demonstrated that universities' promptness in addressing and redressing on-campus moral transgressions helps maintain public faith in the value and values of education. Lithium‐ion capacitors (LICs), as the next generation of supercapacitors, combine the high power density and long cycle life of supercapacitors with the high energy density of lithium‐ion batteries, presenting broad prospects for applications and becoming a focal point of research in academia and industry. Safety concerns regarding LICs, particularly the crucial issue of thermal safety, have garnered widespread attention. This study investigates the thermal abuse, electrical abuse, and mechanical abuse of 1100 F LICs, including overheating, overcharging, overdischarging, needling, extrusion, and short circuit tests, with real‐time monitoring of temperature, gas emissions, and voltage to explore thermal runaway mechanisms. Workplace incivility is experienced ubiquitously by immigrants. While a growing body of literature has sought to identify the causes and the outcomes of this phenomenon, what remains largely underexplored is the role of legal status in configuring how workplace incivility manifests in the immigrant experience. To advance the extant literature, in this article we investigate the question: How does legal status inform the ways in which immigrants exercise agency in response to workplace incivility? In addressing this question, we draw on the methodological resources provided by duoethnography and develop vignettes to make visible the dynamics with workplace incivility that we have individually encountered in the academic organizations in which we have been located—based in the UK and Canada. In juxtaposing the vignettes against one another, we are offered a glimpse into how legal status shapes the forms and the depth of agency available to immigrants to respond to incidents of workplace incivility. In light of our findings, we problematize the nexus between an immigrant's agency and workplace incivility as well as consider the implications this nexus has to ongoing debates in business ethics. In this article, we show how female academics who have been on sick leave hide feelings of exhaustion, fear, and a lack of control and change these feelings into expressions of control and engagement when interacting with students and colleagues. We contend that these emotional efforts are a response to the emotional culture of the university in which vocation and commitment to teaching and research have become entangled with neoliberal management trends. Within this context, academic performance and student satisfaction are measured and evaluated. We use Hochschild’s theory of emotional labour and the literature on the emotional culture of universities under neoliberal management to illuminate how emotional labour takes place in neoliberal academia and argue that this type of work is gendered. Our findings contribute to the growing body of research on gendered emotional labour in the neoliberal academy and add to our understanding of how this form of management affects the emotional lives of those working there. Background: Generative artificial intelligence (Gen-AI) has emerged as a transformative tool in research and education. However, there is a mixed perception about its use. This study assessed the use, perception, prospect, and challenges of Gen-AI use in higher education. Methods: This is a prospective, cross-sectional survey of university students in the United Kingdom (UK) distributed online between January and April 2024. Demography of participants and their perception of Gen-AI and other AI tools were collected and statistically analyzed to assess the difference in perception between various subgroups. Results: A total of 136 students responded to the survey of which 59% (80) were male. The majority were aware of Gen-AI and other AI use in academia (61%) with 52% having personal experience of the tools. Grammar correction and idea generation were the two most common tasks of use, with 37% being regular users. Fifty-six percent of respondents agreed that AI gives an academic edge with 40% holding a positive overall perception about the use in academia. Comparatively, there was a statistically significant difference in overall perception between different age ranges (I2 = 27.39; p = 0.002) and levels of education (I2 = 20.07; p < 0.001). Also, 83% of students believe AI use will increase in academia with over half agreeing it should be integrated into learning. Plagiarism (33%), privacy issues (14%), and lack of clarity by the university (13%) remain the top concerns regarding the use of Gen-AI and other AI tools in academia. Conclusion: Gen-AI and other AI tools are being used and their use will continue to grow in higher education. While current use is challenging due mainly to plagiarism fear and lack of clarity by the university, most users believe AI should be integrated into the university curriculum. The High-Value Nutrition | Ko Ngā Kai Whai Painga National Science Challenge (HVN NSC) was the first of the 11 National Science Challenges (NSCs) to be launched in April 2014. We provide an overview of the background to the Challenge, its overarching objective, a summary of the evolution of the research programme over its 10-year duration, its resilience and adaptation of its research programme during and after the Covid19 pandemic, and its potential impact. We consider the HVN NSC to be an exemplar of how to facilitate constructive engagement between academia and the Food and Beverage (F&B) industry for the benefit of scientists, businesses and consumers. In the context of creative writing groups, this paper explores how the affective experience of vulnerability as a basis for driving more reciprocal and interdependent caring relations involves articulating orientations towards individuality and orientations towards relationality. I examine this experience of vulnerability as an ambivalent embodied condition shaped by sociocultural norms and expectations by drawing on Goffman’s theorisation of frontstage and backstage identities. I suggest that vulnerability is experienced differently between the level of frontstage identity (as writer-listeners) and the more intimate level of backstage identity. Throughout my writing, I embody the story I tell by interweaving experiences of vulnerability in the collective context of creative writing workshops and in the co-writing experience of the academic review process. Introduction: Difficulties in recruitment of veterinary specialists to academia is an ongoing problem for university teaching hospitals. The aim of this study was to determine the proportion of veterinary neurology specialists that plan to work in academia after their residency training and identify the main factors that may influence that decision. Methods: An electronic survey was distributed to European College of Veterinary Neurology (ECVN) residents in training and those that completed their residencies within the previous 12 months. Results: Despite similar numbers of residents training in clinical practice and academic institutions, most respondents (79.7%) planned to work in private practice. The most influential factors for deciding future workplace were quality of life, salary, location, and the number of other specialists (with specialists in subjects other than neurology viewed as more important than neurologists) working in the same institution. The most common reasons for not choosing academia were low compensation, excessive bureaucracy, and high administrative workload compared to private clinical practice. Discussion: Academic institutions need to review support for academic staff and provide stronger mentorship to overcome these problems and ensure provision of high-quality undergraduate teaching in veterinary neurology as well as promoting advancement of the field through basic and applied research. Energy inequality has been a hot topic in academia. This study first measures energy inequality in 25 Chinese provinces, and then investigates the interaction between financial inclusion and energy inequality. We also explore the potential impact mechanism behind the relationship. The primary findings reveal that: (i) Financial inclusion can help reduce energy inequality in China; moreover, the impact of financial inclusion varies according to regional consumption levels and environmental regulation. (ii) Technological innovation plays an important role in enhancing the ability of financial inclusion to reduce energy inequality. (iii) Fiscal revenue and energy consumption structure are two significant mediating factors through which energy inclusion affects energy inequality. (iv) Digital financial inclusion (DFI) has an inverted U-shaped impact on energy inequality. Balancing student life requires a commitment to academics while participating in social, athletic, and cultural activities, with parental guidance crucial in emphasizing the importance of academic goals. This balance becomes particularly challenging for married students, who must carefully manage the dual demands of marital responsibilities and academic obligations, necessitating strategic planning and robust support systems. The study focuses on the existing empirical gap by exploring the unique challenges and experiences of married students returning to academia while balancing family obligations. The study utilized a descriptive exploratory design and criterion sampling to investigate the unique experiences of five married college students balancing academic and marital responsibilities. The study employed an in-depth semi-structured interview utilizing a researcher-made questionnaire validated by experts. The study explores married students' challenges and strategies to balance academic and marital responsibilities, emphasizing the importance of time management, positive attitude, and personal attributes. The result highlights how effective communication and mutual support are vital in mitigating relationship struggles and maintaining harmony. The findings call for tailored support systems to promote married students' well-being and academic success, fostering a balanced and enriching experience in their academic and family lives. Purpose: This study aims to examine academic staff's engagement with sustainable development goals (SDGs) in higher education institutions. Design/methodology/approach: The triangulation, convergence model of the mixed methods research design was adopted as the strategy for inquiry. A total of 56 questionnaires and 25 interviews were used to collect the data, and this was buttressed by document review and use of secondary data obtained from Scival. Findings: The results show moderate levels of engagement of academic staff with the SDGs. However, SDGs familiarisation is not correlated with the rate of localisation. The lack of funding deflated political will by university management, demotivated academia and shrinking government support are the leading impediments to SDGs localisation. Research limitations/implications: The results could be improved by using a larger sample size equally distributed across disciplines. Triangulation of academics' views with those of students and non-academic staff could have improved the understanding of other dynamics involved in the localisation of SDGs by university teaching staff. Practical implications: The results point towards the need for a university-based framework that interweaves national, institutional, thematic, structural and personal aspects into the SDGs implementation matrix. The underlying determinants of successful localisation of SDGs by academia need to be addressed through a bottom-up approach. This paper examines the lived experiences of four early career researchers (ECRs), from various intersecting backgrounds, who pursued their degrees at a prestigious UK university. Bonded through solidarity and care, the authors came together in an online writing group (OWG), which serves as a means of liberation from structural, colonial, and patriarchal oppression. Built upon autoethnographic vignettes, this paper reveals fragile narratives to capture subjective experiences of neglect through the lens of intersectionality and Goffmanian “passing” and “revealing”. Motivated to explore the coping mechanisms of marginalized ECRs, this paper's co‐constructed data collection and co‐generative analysis unpack how a meso‐organization (here, the OWG) allows foreign identities to transcend the constraints of the expected academic professional identity; thus freeing authors from stigma. This paper calls for help and advocates for the urgency of support groups for ECRs as they face issues around finances, political conflicts, and family from pre‐ to post‐COVID‐19 pandemic. Additionally, the research challenges internalized norms of academic productivity and responsibilization and calls for a re‐examination of systemic inequalities. By advocating for collaborative autoethnography and embodied personal storytelling, this study contributes to a richer, more inclusive exploration of intersectionality in academia and emphasizes the need for structural reforms to create more equitable academic environments.
