Research voyages onboard RV ‘Investigator’ in 2021 (IN2021_V08) and 2022 (IN2022_V04) sampled benthic communities of seamounts off Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands, also known as Indian Ocean Australian Territories (IOT). Over 150 specimens of the family Serpulidae collected during the voyages were deposited in the Australian Museum. The animals belonged to the filogranin genera Apomatus, Bathyvermilia, Bathyvermiloides gen. nov., Filogranula, and Protis, as well as to serpulin genera Hyalopomatus, Placostegus and Vitreotubus. In total, 12 species were identified, including three named, but very poorly known serpulids Bathyvermilia challengeri, Filogranula stellata, and Vitreotubus digeromimoi. Nine species Apomatus nishii n. sp., Bathyvermilia rolandobastidai n. sp., Bathyvermiloides juliebrockae n. sp., Protis melmackenzieae n. sp., Protis perneti n. sp., Hyalopomatus nogueirai n. sp., Hyalopomatus rossanae n. sp., Hyalopomatus suelindsayae n. sp., and Placostegus leslieharrisae n. sp. were described. All species descriptions are accompanied by DNA sequence data and their phylogenetic positions in the family Serpulidae have been assessed.

Beginning right at the start of the recently published volume II of Donner le temps, at its 'bord' or 'boarding' upon or out of a calmy oceanic surface, this essay examines the functions and movements of distinct surfaces in between Heidegger and Derrida. Confronting thus the tradition of the 'Grund', 'Abgrund', 'Urgrund', 'Ungrund', with the khôra-like surface of archi-writing and dissemination, the essay proposes an investigation of the philosophical and writerly space of Derrida/Heidegger not through their marks and letters, but instead through the different surfaces of inscription and – simultaneous – effacement as the 'proper places' of thought and experience, of Destruktion and deconstruction. Sequence data assembly is a foundational step in high‐throughput sequencing, with untold consequences for downstream analyses. Despite this, few studies have interrogated the many methods for assembling phylogenomic UCE data for their comparative efficacy, or for how outputs may be impacted. We study this by comparing the most commonly used assembly methods for UCEs in the under‐studied bee lineage Nomiinae and a representative sampling of relatives. Data for 63 UCE‐only and 75 mixed taxa were assembled with five methods, including ABySS, HybPiper, SPAdes, Trinity and Velvet, and then benchmarked for their relative performance in terms of locus capture parameters and phylogenetic reconstruction. Unexpectedly, Trinity and Velvet trailed the other methods in terms of locus capture and DNA matrix density, whereas SPAdes performed favourably in most assessed metrics. In comparison with SPAdes, the guided‐assembly approach HybPiper generally recovered the highest quality loci but in lower numbers. Based on our results, we formally move Clavinomia to Dieunomiini and render Epinomia once more a subgenus of Dieunomia. We strongly advise that future studies more closely examine the influence of assembly approach on their results, or, minimally, use better‐performing assembly methods such as SPAdes or HybPiper. Deep sea is a vast, dark, and difficult-to-access terrain and is now looked upon as a unique niche harboring diverse microorganism. We used a metataxonomic approach to decipher the microbial diversity present in the water column (surface to near bottom), water overlaying the sediments, and the deep-sea sediments (up to 35 cm) from the Indian Contract Region (ICR) in the Central Indian Ocean Basin (CIOB). Samples were collected from #IRZ (Impact Reference Zone), #PRZ (Potential Reference Zone), and #BC20 (Control site, outside potential mining area) with an average water depth of 5,200 m. 16S rRNA (V3-V4 region) amplicon sequencing on the MiSeq platform resulted in 942,851 ASVs across 65 water and sediment samples. Higher prokaryotic diversity was observed below 200 m in the water column to the seafloor. Proteobacteria was the most dominant bacterial phylum among all the water samples while Firmicutes, Actinobacteria and, Bacteroidota dominated the sediments. Sediment (below 10 cm) was co-dominated by Firmicutes. Thermoplasmata was the dominant archaeal group in the water column while Crenarchaeota was in the sediments. BC20 was less diverse than IRZ and PRZ. Deep Sea microorganisms could play a vital role in the mineralization processes, nutrient cycling, and also different biogeochemical cycles. This article argues for a redefinition of difficulty in relation to the inextricable violence of modernity and examines the consecutive challenge to notions of understanding and interpretation — of a text, of language or of the other — that this repositioning brings. To this end, the article offers a nuanced rereading of Steiner's canonical fourfold categorization of difficulty, in dialogue with, first, Édouard Glissant's opacity and, second, Jonathan Pugh and David Chandler's theorizations of 'abyssal thought', an approach emerging from Caribbean and critical Black studies, exploring the key challenge it poses to forging an unmasterful, after Julietta Singh, comparative literary practice. With an equal attention to the theoretical and pedagogical dimensions of reading difficulty, the article emphasizes the importance of the accretive and embodied nature of the reading process and offers a repositioning of textual difficulty, as a meeting site of opacities, and a reformulation of a difficult, unmasterful reading practice, after catastrophe and with others. The presence of Franz Kafka’s influence in various Latin American narrative writers is well known and studied. Less known is the influence Kafka had on the Chilean (anti)poet Nicanor Parra. Some of the most prominent critics of Parra’s work mention it, but it has not been studied in depth. This present article tries to shine light on the antiheroism, dark humor and the anxiety of mortality which are common for both Parra and Kafka.

2,4,6-Tripyridine-s-triazine (TPTZ) spectrophotometric method was applied to determine the concentrations of dissolved monosaccharides (MCHO), polysaccharides (PCHO), and total carbohydrate (TCHO) in seawater samples collected from sea surface to hadal zone and sediment-seawater interface of the Southern Yap Trench in the Western Pacific Ocean. Results show that the concentrations of MCHO, PCHO, and TCHO ranged from 6.3 to 22.3 µmol C/L, 1.1 to 25.4 µmol C/L, and 12.1 to 44.9 µmol C/L, respectively, from the euphotic layer to the hadal zone of the trench. At different sampling stations, the concentrations of MCHO, PCHO, and TCHO in the seawater showed complex vertical variation characteristics, but the overall variation trends were decreasing with water depth. In the Southern Yap Trench, the maximum concentration of MCHO in the seawater appeared in the euphotic layer, and the minimum in the hadal zone. The maximum concentration of PCHO appeared in the euphotic layer, and the minimum in the bathypelagic layer. The water layer where the maxima and minima of the average concentration of TCHO appeared was consistent with that of PCHO. PCHO was the major component of TCHO in the seawater of the Southern Yap Trench. In the seawater from the sediment-seawater interface, the concentrations of MCHO, PCHO, and TCHO ranged from 8.4 to 10.6 µmol C/L, 3.8 to 5.8 µmol C/L, and 12.2 to 15.2 µmol C/L, respectively, and MCHO was the major component of TCHO. The key factors affecting the concentration and existing forms of dissolved sugars in the seawater of the Southern Yap Trench included photosynthesis, respiration, polysaccharide hydrolysis, adsorption and desorption of particulate matter, trench "funnel effect", deep ocean currents, sediment resuspension, and etc. This study provided fundamental data about labile organic matter in abyss and hadal zone of marine environment, which is significant for further understanding of deep-sea organic carbon cycle. Over 200 annelids of the family Serpulidae collected during the voyage were collected and deposited in the Australian Museum in Sydney. Among them there was a new species of the poorly known abyssal (3754–4378 m) genus Spirodiscus. Serpulids typically build cylindrical calcareous tubes attached to hard substrates. Until now, only three serpulid species inhabiting free-lying polygonal tubes were reported from the deep sea: Spirodiscus grimaldii Fauvel, 1909 with quadrangular spirally coiled tubes, Bathyditrupa hovei Kupriyanova, 1993 with quadrangular tusk-shaped tubes, and Spirodiscus groenlandicus (McIntosh, 1877) with octagonal tusk-shaped tubes. The new species, S. ottofinamusi sp. nov. has very characteristic thin tusk-shaped unattached fluted tubes similar to those found in S. groenlandicus, but it differs by the details of collar, thoracic tori and abdominal chaetae. Morphologically, it has a pinnulated opercular peduncle and flat geniculate abdominal chaetae like filogranin serpulids but lacks thoracic Apomatus chaetae like serpulins. The first DNA sequences of this mysterious taxon places the new species within the filogranins in sister group relationship with Chitinopoma serrula.

Deep-sea lineages are generally thought to arise from shallow-water ancestors, but this hypothesis is based on a relatively small number of taxonomic groups. Anthozoans, which include corals and sea anemones, are significant contributors to the faunal diversity of the deep sea, but the timing and mechanisms of their invasion into this biome remain elusive. Here, we reconstruct a fully resolved, time-calibrated phylogeny of 83 species in the order Antipatharia (black coral) to investigate their bathymetric evolutionary history. Our reconstruction indicates that extant black coral lineages first diversified in continental slope depths (∼250–3000 m) during the early Silurian (∼437 millions of years ago (Ma)) and subsequently radiated into, and diversified within, both continental shelf (less than 250 m) and abyssal (greater than 3000 m) habitats. Ancestral state reconstruction analysis suggests that the appearance of morphological features that enhanced the ability of black corals to acquire nutrients coincided with their invasion of novel depths. Our findings have important conservation implications for anthozoan lineages, as the loss of 'source' slope lineages could threaten millions of years of evolutionary history and confound future invasion events, thereby warranting protection. In this work, we reflect on a speculative pedagogical exercise in which we recorded, and invited others to record, through and with knots, situations of our daily lives related to forms of containment and entrapment. Accompanying this creative and collaborative work allowed us to materialize situations of vulnerability and unease (as knots), as well as the difficulty of registering these discomforts (through knots). We are interested in presenting this exercise as an embodied design practice. We also want to highlight how the staging of vulnerability and unease―made through material practices― generates contemplative pauses that have the power to make the fragility of life visible, and thus anticipate the need for repair. We argue here that repair, as a practice linked to design, is a making that deserves to be propitiated by contemplation and catharsis, in the face of damage and fragility in capitalist contexts. Today, we are held to live in the Anthropocene, bringing to an end modern binary imaginaries, such as the separation between Human and Nature, and with them Western assumptions of progress, linear causality and human exceptionalism. Much Western critical theory, from new or vital materialism to post‐ and more‐than‐human thinking, unsurprisingly reflects this internal crisis of faith in Eurocentric or Enlightenment reasoning. At the same time, a radically different critique of modernity has gained prominence in recent years, emerging from critical Black studies, which places the Caribbean at the centre of the development of a new and distinct mode of critical thought. In attempting to grasp the ways in which Caribbean thought and practice have been seen to enable a distinctive alternative non‐Eurocentric imaginary, this paper heuristically sets out a paradigmatic framing of 'abyssal geography'. We emphasize two key points. The first is that abyssal thought is not grounded in abstract and timeless philosophical assumptions but figuratively draws upon aspects of Caribbean practices of resistance and survival, for example, from the Middle Passage, Plantation, carnival, creolization, dance forms and speculative fiction. The second is that abyssal work engages the legacies of modernity and coloniality by explicitly seeking to question the lure of ontology: seeking to disrupt, suspend and to problematize the modern project of the human and the world. In a conversation with Manthia Diawara aboard the Queen Mary II in 2009, Édouard Glissant elaborated his definition of Relation, a concept that he formally presented in his book Poétique de la relation in 1990, but that emerged out of years of writing about creolization and cultural action in the Caribbean. Sitting at the ship’s window, with the Atlantic Ocean crashing around him, Glissant explains that “the truth that is increasingly coming to light about Black reality in the New World is the truth of multiplicity, the truth of the step towards the Other.”

The composition and concentration of dissolved free amino acid (DFAA) of seawater samples collected in May 2016 from the surface to the hadal zone of the northern region of the Yap Trench were analyzed by pre-column derivatization of o-phthalaldehyde. Results show that the average concentration of DFAA in the study area was 0.47±0.36 µmol/L. In different sampling stations, the concentrations of DFAA with water depth showed complex variation patterns. At the sediment-seawater interface, the concentrations of DFAA in the western side of the trench were obviously higher than that in its eastern side. In the study area, there were no significant correlations between the concentrations of DFAA and the environmental parameters such as concentrations of chlorophyll a (Chl a), dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), indicating that the concentrations of DFAA in seawater of the trench are affected by many factors, such as photosynthesis, respiration, temperature, pressure, illumination, and circulation. The dominant DFAA are similar in different water layers of sampling stations, including aspartic acid (Asp), glutamic acid (Glu), glycine (Gly), and serine (Ser). The composition of different amino acids, and the relative abundance of acidic, basic, and neutral amino acids might be related to the sources and consumption of various amino acids. Nine pairs of amino acids in the DFAA showed significantly positive relationship by correlation matrix analysis, suggesting that they might share similar biogeochemical processes. The degradation index (DI) of the DFAA in seawater of the Yap Trench could reflect the degradation, source, and freshness of DFAA in the trench to some extents. This is a preliminary study of amino acids from sea surface to hadal zone in the ocean, more works shall be done in different trenches to reveal their biogeochemical characteristics in extreme marine environments. The Poraniidae (Asteroidea, Valvatacea) is recorded for the first time from Australian waters at deep-sea (>200 m) depths, including, at present, Australia's deepest known asteroid occurrence from 3850 m. Three genera are reviewed, each represented by a single species, Poraniomorpha tartarus n. sp., Marginaster paucispinus Fisher 1913, and Marginaster patriciae McKnight 2006, which is reassigned to the new genus, Bathymarginaster. Comparisons with other asteroid groups similar to the Poraniidae in Australian waters is made and a key to genera of the Poraniidae is provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This essay considers Adam Zagajewski’s poem “Evening, Stary Sącz” and in particular, the line “Little abysses open between the stones.” This image invites us to reflect on the many startling gaps and voids in Zagajewski’s poems. At times, those abysses suggest historical and political dimensions particular to Polish (and European) experience in the 20th century; but more often, Zagajewski presents the abyss as moral and metaphysical. “Evening, Stary Sącz,” a poem that doesn’t on its surface appear very threatening, opens suddenly through its “little abysses” into sacrificial reality. Lipid biomarkers from deep-sea sediments have been observed in several studies, but little is known about their occurrence in trench system sediments. Here, we determined the concentrations of lipid biomarkers (fatty acids and neutral lipids) in sediments from the north Yap Trench. Our results showed that short-chain (C12–20) saturated fatty acids (SFAs) contributed more than (C12:1–23:1) monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), and (C16:3–24:4) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Most fatty acids (FAs) suggest that bacteria and algae were the main contributors to marine organic matter. In contrast, terrestrial organic matter (OM) was a minor contributor to long carbon chain fatty acids greater than C20. On the other side, the observed neutral lipids such as alkanes (C14–C27), alkanols (C12–C20), alkenes (C17:1–C26:1), phytol and sterol (C27–29) indicate that phytoplankton and bacteria were the main contributors of organic materials in the sediments, and the carbon chain of neutral lipids C20–29 offering the sources of terrestrial organic matter. The extremely depleted δ13C values of fatty acids give the sources of organic carbon in the sediments from bacteria, algae, and methane-related microbes. This study is important for understanding the biogeochemical activities in deep-sea environments, particularly in the abyss and hadal zones. This paper represents a continuation of taxonomic publications on the benthic fauna of polymetallic nodule fields in the eastern Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) using material collected during baseline environmental survey work targeting two exploration contract areas (“UK-1” and “OMS”) and one Area of Particular Environmental Interest, “APEI-6.” Families Poecilochaetidae Hannerz, 1956 and Spionidae Grube, 1850 of the annelid suborder Spioniformia were studied here. Taxonomic data are presented for 25 species from 98 records as identified by a combination of morphological and genetic approaches. Although sub-optimal morphological condition can prevent new species being formally described, it is essential that morphological, molecular, and voucher data are made available for future surveys. Descriptions of two new species—Poecilochaetus brenkei sp. nov. and Laonice shulseae sp. nov.—increase the number of formally described new annelid species from the areas targeted in this study to 15 and CCZ-wide to 46. We also discuss the commonly reported “cosmopolitan” deep-sea spionid Aurospio dibranchiata Maciolek, 1981, which we show represents several genetically distinct species (three of these from CCZ area alone) but without reliable morphological characters to separate them. Molecular data provide evidence that 15 out of 25 species reported here have a wide distribution within the eastern CCZ and that Aurospio sp. “NHM_2186” and the known species Prionospio amarsupiata Neal & Altamira in Paterson et al. 2016 may be cosmopolitan. Lastly, the molecular data provide insights into relationships within Spioniformia, suggesting that both Poecilochaetidae and Trochochaetidae belong within Spionidae. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article is devoted to the evolution of the image of abyss from the myth and Bible to the romantic poetry, where it gets art characteristics. The image of the abyss is present at all stages of the human culture development, beginning from the Babylon myth about the origin of the Earth (III century BC) and later the Bible, in the folklore and the literature of the Middle Age up to the modern time. At the New Age due to the subjectivation of the culture the image of abyss receives some psychological aspect. The study of preromantic and romantic poetry permits to follow the changes in its semantics, the emergence of new nuances of meaning.

This essay addresses two key questions that Origen raised about the creation story: the nature of the heaven and earth referred to in Gen 1:1, and the identity of the abyss and the darkness mentioned in Gen 1:2. It argues that he understood the heaven and earth of Gen 1:1 to refer to an immaterial plan for creation conceived and held in God's Wisdom, and that the abyss and darkness refer to the realm of Satan and the demonic elements. It suggests that Origen's understanding, at least about the second set of questions, had shifted in his later thinking from what it was earlier. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, I critique the prevalent notion that only in the abyss can one emerge to be the Übermensch, or to use Hollingdale’s term, the Superman. To support this, I will first expound on the notion of the abyss as ethical nihilism from the perspective of the death of God to Nietzsche’s critique of morality. I argue that ethical nihilism as an abyss is insufficient in constituting Nietzsche’s Superman. I will then set how the Superman emerges through counter-stages. The paradox is that such tragic an abyss that serves as conditio sine qua non for the Superman falls flat when looked at in the perspective of life. There underlies a fundamental difficulty in simply accepting the proposals of acknowledging the abyss or ‘becoming what one is.’ Later, Nietzsche’s anti-romanticism and anti-Darwinism are explored to support such difficulty.

Localizado en Cuenca, una pequeña capital de provincias, y fundado por artistas, supuso una descentralización del tejido cultural del momento y la reactivación del centro histórico de la ciudad al emplazarse en su principal reclamo turístico, sus famosas «casas» (de ahí el popular apelativo «Museo de las Casas Colgadas»). El proyecto concedió una importancia inusitada a la convivencia entre obra y espacio expositivo, favoreciendo una experiencia estética ín-tima en las distintas estancias del edificio junto a las vertiginosas vistas de la peculiar geografía de una ciudad tallada en la roca. Analizando su historia, desentrañaremos las poéticas de esta imbricación entre arquitectura, arte y paisaje, la cual ha hecho de este un Museo reconocido internacionalmente. --- The Museum of Spanish Abstract Art, which opened in 1966, is the first privately-owned contemporary art center in Spain. Located in Cuenca, a small provincial capital, and founded by artists, it brought about a decentralisation of the cultural fabric at that time and a reactivation of the historical city center, as it became its main tourist attraction — its famous «houses» (hence, the popular epithet «Cuenca’s Hanging Houses Museum»). This project gave an unusual amount of relevance to the coexistence between the artwork and the exhibition space. It also favored an intimate aesthetic experience in its different rooms together with the vertiginous views of the peculiar geography of a city carved on the rock. By looking into its history, we will unravel the poetics of this blend of architecture, art and landscape, which has driven a growing number of visitors to the Museum in recent years.

The split between the subject and object is the epistemological inheritance of modernity’s enchantment with substance, notably shown by the subjectivism in the Cartesian ‘cogito’ and Kantian ‘transcendental I’. In this paper, I will attempt to argue that despite Heidegger’s ontological hermeneutics that eclipsed Descartes’ dualism and Kant’s transcendentalism, there is still a possibility of the return of both Subject and Object – exemplified even on ontological grounds in Žižek’s Subject-Oriented Ontology and Harman’s Object-Oriented Ontology. Conveniently, I will situate the two ontologies, dubbed respectively as SOO and OOO, in the recent Žižek & Harman Duel/Duet (2017). Further, I will rework the uses of two important notions found only in this debate– unhintergebar (the ‘unsurpassable’) and ostranenie (defamiliarization) – to explicate the transport from Heidegger’s metaphysical abyss to spectral abyss. Arguing from Heidegger’s ground (grund) and/or abyss (abgrund) that grounds possibilities of being, I will call this new ground for strange possibilities as spectral abyss (gespenstisch abgrund). To achieve this, I will do two things. First, I will briefly rehearse the epistemological split and Heidegger’s ontological turn. And second, I will resituate the debate by showing how Žižek and Harman’s ontologies can emerge from Heidegger’s spectral abyss. The developments in the study of digeneans of deep-sea fish in the 21st Century are documented and discussed. Most recent work has been on the bathyal fauna (i.e. 1,000m-2,999 m depth), with virtually nothing on the abyssal fauna (i.e. deeper than 3,000 m). The one study on hydrothermal vent digeneans has indicated that these regions probably harbour a distinctive fauna. The demarcation of the deep-sea fauna is blurred at the poles, where the cold-adapted fauna appears similar to the shallower bathyal fauna. The abyssal fauna, however, appears distinct, possibly due to adaptations to variable or ultra-high pressures. The digenean fauna of bathypelagic fishes is depauperate. Recent phylogenetic studies reinforce the view that the typical deep-sea fauna has radiated in the deep-sea. Encroachment into the deep from shallow water is relatively rare. Overall, the digenean fauna in the deep-sea is distinctly less diverse that the equivalent fauna in shallow waters. A major conclusion is that our understanding of the deep-sea digenean fauna is poor, and that much further work over a much wider area is needed.

The author of the article studies the creative legacy of Yuriy Mamleev, trying to establish the correlation between of his philosophical and fiction writings. The conventional editorial distinction between philosophical and literary texts as different and autonomous categories (where philosophical texts are “The Destiny of Being” and “Eternal Russia”, the rest are fiction) is rejected. Instead of the idea, that philosophical and fictional aspects of texts by Mamleev are inextricably linked, it is claimed that they should be considered together. In the author’s opinion, these texts present different perspectives and implementations of his oeuvre that contains the rational dimension (which requires categorical language of philosophy) and on the other hand – irrational dimension of artistic images and obscure allusions. Mamleev’s writings considered by means of 5 crucial “metathemes”: Аbyss and the “Ultimate relationships” concerned with it, the Mystery which has two levels – one cognizable and the another – uncoognizable in principal, the “root of self-being” and metaphysic (utrism) of “I”, death and immortality, Russia and the Russian soul which are existed between West and East with special historical and cosmological mission. It is concluded that these 5 metathemes pervade all Mamleev’s texts and comprise his spiritual search. The characters of Mamleev’s fiction are mostly people of post-Soviet world, who ask questions with no set answers to become acquainted with the secrets of being. At the same time they are concerned with their own existence, their self destiny. Their actions are extraordinary and illogical. Supposedly Mamleev’s artistic images not only correspond with his philosophical ideas, for instance – utrism or the “Ultimate relationships”, but also reveal them from unexpected perspective. The author determines that distinction between philosophy and literature of Mamleev is incorrect, as these areas are conflated. Any distinction of this kind will ruin the logic of Mamleev’s thinking and outlook. Thus, metaphysical realism (that Mamleev founds) can be viewed as the crossing, distinction blurring area, productive and creative transgression. Or as the situation when philosophy (and literature) is more than it is itself.

Paralicella tenuipesChevreux, 1908 and Paralicella caperescaShulenberger and Barnard, 1976 are known as widely distributed deep-sea scavenging amphipods. Some recent studies based on genetic data indicated the presence of high intraspecific variation of P. caperesca suggesting it is a species complex. Based on published molecular data from the Pacific and Indian oceans and new material obtained from the North and South Atlantic, we integrated the knowledge on the intraspecific variation and species distribution of the two nominal taxa. The study included analysis of three genes (COI, 16S rRNA, 28S rRNA) and revealed the existence of a single Molecular Operational Taxonomic Unit (MOTU) within P. tenuipes and six different MOTUs forming P. caperesca. The distribution pattern of the recognized lineages varied with three (P. tenuipes, MOTU 1 and MOTU 5 of P. caperesca) being widely distributed. There was evidence of contemporary population connectivity expressed by the share of the same COI haplotypes by individuals from very distant localities. At the same time no signal of recent demographic changes was observed within the studied taxa. The time-calibrated phylogeny suggested the emergence of species to be at the time of Mesozoic/Cenozoic transition that may be associated with global changes of the ocean circulation and deep sea water cooling.

Lipid biomarkers from deep-sea sediments have been observed in several studies, but little is known about their occurrence in trench system sediments. Here, we determined the concentrations of lipid biomarkers (fatty acids and neutral lipids) in sediments from the north Yap Trench. Our results showed that short-chain (C12–20) saturated fatty acids (SFAs) contributed more than (C12:1–23:1) monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), and (C16:3–24:4) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Most fatty acids (FAs) suggest that bacteria and algae were the main contributors to marine organic matter. In contrast, terrestrial organic matter (OM) was a minor contributor to long carbon chain fatty acids greater than C20. On the other side, the observed neutral lipids such as alkanes (C14–C27), alkanols (C12–C20), alkenes (C17:1–C26:1), phytol and sterol (C27–29) indicate that phytoplankton and bacteria were the main contributors of organic materials in the sediments, and the carbon chain of neutral lipids C20–29 offering the sources of terrestrial organic matter. The extremely depleted δ13C values of fatty acids give the sources of organic carbon in the sediments from bacteria, algae, and methane-related microbes. This study is important for understanding the biogeochemical activities in deep-sea environments, particularly in the abyss and hadal zones. It will be helpful to understand the sources, transfer, and deposition of organic matter in marine trenches.

Recent advances in sampling capabilities have enabled some of the first large-scale bathyal and abyssal surveys in Australian waters, allowing new insights into the deep-sea invertebrate fauna of the region. Here we describe Abditoconus investigatoris n. sp., the first xylophagaid described from Australia in 60 years. Abitoconus investigatoris is characterised by a siphon with distinct proximal and distal portions, with a prominent wrinkled ventral band on the proximal portion. This species was also observed with epizoic ciliates (fam. Vorticellidae), the first known association of ciliates and xylophagaids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The deep seafloor is teeming with life, most of which remains poorly known to science. It also constitutes an important reserve of natural resources, particularly minerals, that mining companies will start harvesting in the next few years (Nat Rev Earth Environ, 1, 2020, 158). In this context, broad biodiversity assessments of deep‐sea ecosystems are urgently needed to establish a baseline prior to mining. However, significant gaps in our taxonomic knowledge and the high cost of sampling in the deep sea limit the effectiveness of conventional morphology‐based surveys. In this issue of Molecular Ecology, Laroche et al. (Mol Ecol, 2020) capitalize on high throughput molecular methods to conduct one of the most detailed and rigorous surveys of the composition and biogeography of deep‐seafloor metazoan communities to date. The authors show that deep seamounts in the Clarion Clipperton Zone are inhabited by rich metazoan communities that are distinct from those of the surrounding abyssal plains. These results have important conservation implications: if communities on deep seamounts were to persist after large‐scale industrial mining operations on the surrounding plains, the seamounts would not serve as appropriate reservoirs to repopulate impacted areas. As in the case of chronic introverts, Paul Celan talks little and convulsively about poetry. Celan is a poet who fragments his self kaleidoscopically, as if the third dimension bindingly entails a third being. The epicenter of Celan's poetry is always the reconstructed being. The residual being. Celan is programmatically casting about for a second abyss. The writer behaves like an unfathomed Janus: he wants another, deeper one, from which to see himself (as another). From the depths below the conscious, he looks with unique sensoriality at the known surface. An explorer and adventurer of "The Being", Celan seeks the foundation of fountain; he seeks to have a communion with the "dark springs" towards a new limpidity.
