Not everything at IdeaSquare is about excitement and creativity. The self-appointed innovation team also takes on more "mundane" tasks, such as cleaning and organizing the space. On this occasion, that meant moving furniture—tables, chairs, cupboards, and the like. A task requiring an especial focus on physical dimensions. However, as often happens with serendipity, this seemingly routine activity sparked a deeper question: Might dimensions have anything to do with innovation? If so, how?

From mathematics to the WWW, the IdeaSquare team embarks in the daunting adventure of elucidating the relationship between coffee and transformative innovation.

The IdeaSquare innovation team confronts a question many hardly dare to ask. But as always, it never shies away from a good challenge. This time, the journey starts with questioning the universality of the way particle physics research scales up. Is bigger better? The adventure then starts, bottom up, from asking whether small is beautiful. Then, relying on dimensions of politics, biology and finally, physics, the IdeaSquare innovation team find the Universal Truth to answer… (or not) the very question everyone is wondering.

At IdeaSquare and CERN, we are constantly on the look-out for sources of inspiration to make our science better and to make orders-of-magnitude jumps in the process, as well. This time around, we take a closer look at Pancho Villa and his Mexican Hat and see how that could explain the relationship between creativity vs. structure in the innovation process.

This time the experimental innovation team at IdeaSquare explores the science (and excitement) behind soap bubbles seeking for keys to achieve “order of magnitude jumps” in projects.

The purpose of this paper is to offer a “Gedankenexperiment” related to the question of amplification of innovation. We assume a simple innovation ecosystem in which its different actors (research communities, industry and public and private investors) interact in parallel but pursue different (but not necessarily incompatible) goals. Our approach is inspired by chaos and non-linear dynamical system theories and the famous “butterfly effect”. An arm-chair recipe on how to amplify innovation is casually offered and some concrete examples are outlined.

The event “A. M. Ripellino seen through the eyes of young scholars” was held on the 15th of December 2023 at the Sapienza University of Rome, thanks to the collaboration of the doctoral students of the international program Germanic and Slavic Studies and the coordination of Emilio Mari. It was conceived as an occasion to reflect on the scholar’s legacy and his relevance to the youngest generation of scholars. Adhering to a dialogical approach, the day was divided into two round tables. The first roundtable, “Legacy and Canon”, featured four speeches. Luca Veronesi presented Ripellino’s essays dedicated to Gavriil Derzhavin, emphasising the anomaly of the scholar’s interest in an author belonging to eighteenth-century Russian literature. Rukya Mandrile analysed the implications of adopting the formal method in Ripellino’s literary domain in response to the guidelines dictated by socialist realism, considering Vladimir Maiakovskii, Evgenii Evtushenko and Václav Havel as examples. In a joint speech, Angela Mondillo and Marta Belia showed the specificities of Ripellino’s contribution to Czech Studies, exemplified through his interest in the Czech poets František Halas and Vladimír Holan. In the second roundtable, entitled “Poetics and Stylistics”, there were three speeches. Martina Mecco proposed an analysis of Ripellino’s essayistic style, comparing two canonical texts in the reception of Czech literature and culture in Italy, Storia della poesia ceca contemporanea and Praga Magica. Alessandro Pulimanti focused on Praga Magica, emphasising the passages that best describe the Bohemian capital’s dreamlike, almost imaginary character. Finally, Riccardo Mini analysed Ripellino’s translations of Aleksandr Blok’s poems, relating the translation solutions to elements emerging from his essays dedicated to the poet.
