AbstractNatural liberty is a powerful idea of social order. However, a tension has always existed between its reality and social values. Here, I try to identify where the fault line may lie between an order that fulfils social expectation and one that does not. I claim that throughout history, this fault line had been manifested in the distinction drawn between the concepts of price and value. The first emerges in markets and the second reflects social expectations. Juxtaposing the two reveals either harmony or dissonance between natural liberty and social expectations. This article evaluates online social behavior regarding the establishment of limited-use areas (LUAs) around the airports in Warsaw and Gdansk. The study relied mainly on an analysis of Google Trends statistics, in particular the dynamics of keyword searches. The article suggests that assessments of online behavior can provide a deeper understanding of social behavior. The study involved an OLS regression analysis and a causal impact analysis of the intervention based on a Bayesian structural time-series model. This article analyses different phases of an information society's activity, from the introduction of LUAs around airports to the deadline for submitting compensation claims. The results indicate that the number of searches for the keyword "compensation" increased significantly after the introduction of LUAs and that RSV decreased after the end of the compensation process, which confirms that the intervention significantly influenced the analyzed time series.

The processes of kinship, gender and age stratification, early learning opportunities, socialization, and the ability to engage in creativity and optimize craft are crucial for developing the education economy. All these factors in the development of the education economy should turn a young person into an economic person with the ability to make effective production, technological, and managerial decisions regarding the development of his or her personality, society, and economic element.

The aim of the research was to identify and assess the professional problems of women who hold managerial positions. In addition, factors influencing the female style of management were identified and the level of discrimination against women as well as the level of gender equality in Poland and in the European Union was assessed, using the gender equality index.

The main objective of this study is to investigate the short- and long-term effects of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) on CO2 in some ASEAN countries having high levels of FDI, including Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam. This study applied Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) analysis in estimating the short- and long-term relationship of FDI on CO2. The test results showed that the short-term positive impact of FDI on CO2 was shown in Singapore and Indonesia, while the negative effect was seen in Vietnam. In the long-term relationship, a positive impact was found in Vietnam and Singapore.

Thromboelastography is a quantitative test widely used to measure the efficiency of blood clotting. However, awaiting the results of maximum amplitude (MA) is necessary for determining the need for platelet- and fibrinogen-containing products. A more rapid prediction of MA could facilitate faster preparation and administration of blood transfusion products, thereby resulting in coagulation improvement. In this retrospective study, we hypothesized that early amplitude at 10 min (A10) could be a predictor of MA. Therefore, we investigated whether MA can be rapidly inferred from thromboelastographic 6 s (TEG6s) measurements and evaluated its correlation with A10. We extracted TEG6s measurements obtained in operating rooms and intensive care units of our hospital between January 2018 and December 2022. The correlation of MA with display items of TEG6s results, including reaction time, kinetics, α angle, activated clotting time, and A10, was evaluated. The relationship between citrated rapid TEG (CRT)-A10 and CRT-MA, as well as between citrated functional fibrinogen (CFF)-A10 and CFF-MA, were evaluated if A10 and MA showed a good correlation. The results showed good correlations between CRT-A10 and CRT-MA, as well as between CFF-A10 and CFF-MA. Therefore, evaluating A10 using TEG6s could predict MA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Digital technology changes the innovation mode, and the innovative factors among innovation subjects will be digitally empowered. The government plays a very important role in determining the allocation of innovative factors. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify the main source of power for the high-quality development of the manufacturing industry in the future, so as to help the government to use digital technology to adjust the innovative factors allocation appropriately. We used systematic dynamic model to portray the innovation mechanism of manufacturing industry and set relevant parameters based on previous literature to predict the variation of innovation under different scenarios. It was found that government expenditure on science and technology can significantly improve innovation performance, followed by information expenditure, while government expenditure on education needs to reach a certain scale before it can play a positive role. However, after passing a certain threshold, education has a significantly positive role in promoting innovation.Therefore, when the government adjusts the structure of expenditures, it should ensure long-term and stable education expenditure, give full play to the role of innovative factors such as talents. It should also ensure the construction and maintenance of information infrastructure, so as to enhance the industry-university-research collaborative innovation in the digital era and promote high-quality development of manufacturing industry.

This paper analyses industrial upgrading possibilities for the Hungarian economy in light of recent changes in global Foreign Direct Investment activities. The changing economic landscape provides a reason to investigate the impact of the recent developments in Hungary, a country with an open, dependent economy. The study investigates how the front-running sector, the manufacturing industry, performs during the current, turbulent times. Does it upgrade from the earlier assembly-focused positions in global value chains, or are there any signs of deterioration by backshoring certain activities to the headquarters of multinational companies? By using both primary and secondary research and conducting a regional comparison, the study finds that the Hungarian economy still shows the characteristics of a “factory economy”, but progress has been made towards the aspired “knowledge economy” status.

Tony Lawson, the leading figure of the Cambridge Social Ontology Group, recently published a series of papers devoted to the question of the nature of money. These contributions have to be understood in the context of his broader approach to social ontology, the so called social positioning theory. While at first glance Lawson’s monetary ideas might appear disconnected and sometimes even contradictory or mistaken, there is a consistent vision behind them which is Lawson general social ontology. Lawson’s elaboration of the nature of money is not the only one compatible with the social positioning theory and an alternative one is briefly proposed in the paper. While systematising various Lawson’s monetary contributions, attention has been paid to several particular discrepancies and mistakes and their rectification. At the end of the paper, some lessons from analysing Lawson’s monetary contributions are drawn for his general approach to social ontology.

This paper empirically investigates the effect of anti-dumping investigations on export firm innovation performance using Chinese firm-level patent filings data and anti-dumping case from 2000 to 2013. By employing the staggered difference-in-differences strategy, our empirical evidence shows that anti-dumping investigations imposed on firms lead to an improvement in innovation rather than suppression. Further examination identifies that the trade diversion effect is a crucial mechanism through which anti-dumping investigations affect firm innovation. We find that firms are experiencing a significant increase in exports of investigated products to non-involved countries, while also expanding their export destinations and diversifying the range of exported products. Heterogeneity analysis indicates that anti-dumping charges significantly promote innovation in high-productivity firms and multi-product exporting enterprises, while financial constraints are identified as a crucial factor restricting innovation. By analyzing more than 1,400 expert tasting notes, we assess the so-called gender profile of Bordeaux wines. We identify 329 gender-related wine descriptors, with a good balance between masculine and feminine descriptors. Some wines and vintages are described as more feminine than others, but no clear trend over time emerges. Our regression analysis further reveals that more feminine wines receive similar ratings and sell at similar prices as their more masculine counterparts, but they are perceived as having a much more limited aging potential. The study aims to determine the influencing factors and their impact levels on residential land prices. The research investigated 241 officials, real estate investors, appraisers, and real estate brokers on factors affecting residential land prices. Research results have shown 13 groups with 45 factors affecting the price of residential land. The impact rates of the factor groups range from 1.43% to 23.65%. The COVID-19 pandemic factor group has the strongest impact on land prices, followed by other factor groups, including upgrading administrative units; formulation and implementation of the planning; the real estate market; financial – economics; credit; real estate brokerage; infrastructure; location of the land parcel; particular factors; juridical factors; environment and social security. To harmonize the interests of the State, investors, and land users when valuing land, it is necessary to pay attention to the factors that strongly impact land prices first, and then the smaller ones.

AbstractThe rapid upward thrust of the economy has harmed the environment, which has been compounded by pollution. More and more people are becoming concerned about their surroundings and looking for strategies to mitigate their unfavorable consequences. This is seen in governments’ and enterprises’ determination to expand and produce environmentally friendly products, as well as raise demand for green products. The purpose of this research is to uncover characteristics influencing green consumption behavior in Vietnam and to determine the most powerful motivator that drives customers to buy green products. The quantitative technique was applied in this investigation, with 231 samples obtained via an online survey. To analyze and assess the acquired data, several methods such as Cronbach’s Alpha, EFA, SEM, One-way ANOVA, and Independent Sample T-test were used using SPSS and Amos software. According to the findings, three elements, including Attitudes, Social Norms, and Environmental Concerns, have a beneficial effect on green consumption behavior in Vietnam, with environmental concerns playing a particularly important role. The latest findings offered meaningful data about buyer purchasing characteristics, allowing businesses to expand green goods and devise marketing practices to get more customers to make use of them.

AbstractThis study investigates the impact of economic policy uncertainty (EPU) on foreign remittances and whether it affects them symmetrically or asymmetrically. The ARDL model is employed to examine the short-run and long-run symmetric impact of EPU on foreign remittances, while the NARDL model is utilized to examine the short-run and long-run asymmetric impact of EPU on foreign remittances, using monthly data for the BRIC economies (Brazil, Russia, India, and China). The results indicate that in the short-run, EPU has a positive and significant impact only on the inflows of foreign remittances received in Russia. Additionally, the short-run asymmetric impact of EPU on foreign remittances is found in Russia and India. Meanwhile, the long-run asymmetric impact of EPU on foreign remittances is observed in the BRIC economies. In particular, the results show that the non-linear response of EPU varies among the sampled countries. The findings of this study enhance our understanding of the role of policy uncertainty in overseas remittances. This information would be beneficial for policymakers, migrants, and recipients, as they are directly involved in making decisions about policies and the transfer of remittances, respectively.

This article draws on textual evidence from The Theory of Moral Sentiments and The Wealth of Nations to address mistaken interpretations of Adam Smith's fundamental concept of self‐interest as greed that has been said to have had a corrosive influence on markets, commercial behaviour, and widening inequality. To the contrary, Smith's complex set of human motivations, including self‐interest, his economic system that is based on free markets, and institutional frameworks governing productive property rights and the rule of law are argued to increase aggregate wealth, improve the position of those least well off, and maintain ethical social order. One of the best-known innovations of the recent past is blockchain. Due to its usability, it has generated considerable interest in several economic areas. A decentralised system’s approach can potentially reshape existing industries or make them redundant. Such technology can add a new dimension to processes, which is particularly relevant for the banking sector in the future. This demonstrates a great necessity to deal with blockchain with respect to market position and competition. This paper aims to provide insight into the current potential of blockchain applications in banking procedures. The benefits of process improvement in the financial sector are also outlined. This research shows that many experiences and adequate knowledge are already available. According to recent research, this technology will benefit banks’ business models, performance, and capabilities. However, blockchain is still in the phase of research and development, which is a crucial aspect of the banking industry.

Creating interdisciplinary dialog in the field of socio-economics cannot be separated from the social diversity among scholarly voices within its community. In marking the 20th anniversary year of Socio-Economic Review (SER), this article examines the role of gender among authors and reviewers in SER. Our findings show that women remain underrepresented in terms of authorship and reviewing. While no gender differences exist in overall acceptance rates for submitted papers, a substantial gender gap exists in the number of submissions. Our analysis also highlights how the persistence of gender segregation is related to the predominance of male-only author teams and male-dominated research topics. The article concludes with suggestions for further research and a discussion on gender disparities in socio-economics and other social science fields. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Government is the custodian of the most critical (and limited) factor of production , namely, land. Assuring the security of tenure, arbitrating disputes, and facilitating the transfer or sales of titles renders the land market more efficient and less volatile, attracting investors and promoting sustainable urban development. Land tenure security is also a critical government service that has repercussions on agricultural productivity, housing development, business investment, and the development of urban areas. However, land administration is mired in corruptive practices, elite capture, and inefficient allocation. Globally, only 24% of rural areas are mapped (46 in urban areas), with approximately the same percentage registered, that is, 22%. In Africa, only about 14% of rural land is formally recorded in a public register. Land tenure security can take a variety of forms depending on national regulatory frameworks that allocate land and specify its use. Success stories include transferable user certificates in China and individual land titles in Rwanda. Systematic evaluation of the evidence on tenure programs demonstrates that improved tenure security increases agricultural output (40% on average), increases urban land values (25% on average), and increases household welfare (15% on average). Other observed country-specific benefits include additional years of schooling, better academic performance, access to credit, reforestation, and improved household nutrition. The costs of establishing tenure security in Sub-Saharan Africa include the separate costs of rural (US$ 3 billion) and urban (US$ 2.2 billion) land registration; the cost of digitizing land registries and information to improve efficiency and transparency (US$ 880 million), the cost of strengthening institutions and systems to resolve land disputes and manage expropriations (US$ 960 million) over a ten-year implementation period, and land administration operations and land records maintenance over 30 years (US$ 64 billion). The net present value (8%) of costs is US$ 21.7 billion for rural land tenure and US$ 5.3 billion for urban areas. The benefits of rural land registration were based on the observed 15% household wealth effect noted in the literature. The net present value (8%) of a 30-year benefits stream is US$ 396 billion. The benefit–cost ratio of completing and modernizing land registration and improving land administration coverage and effectiveness in rural Sub-Saharan Africa is 18. The benefits of urban land registration were based on the average 25% increase in property values observed in the literature. Using housing prices for the 20 largest, Sub-Saharan African countries, the net present value (8%) of the benefits over a 30-year period is US$ 237 billion, yielding a benefit–cost ratio of 45 when the average housing price is used. In almost every country, government is the largest buyer of works, goods, and services from the private sector. Through the laws and practice of public procurement, governments create competition among firms, thus optimizing public expenditure. However, public procurement is often associated with inefficient allocation of resources and corruption. One method to reduce inefficiencies and abuse in public procurement is the use of e-government procurement (e-GP) platforms. Yet nearly 40% of countries—mostly low- and lower-middle income countries—do not have functioning e-GP platforms. Cost–benefit analysis is used to make the investment case for the development and integration of e-procurement systems in low- and lower middle-income countries. The costs of setting up an e- GP system include an initial investment of $9.03 million, on average, for the planning, design, and build phases spread over a 5-year period. Annual operating and maintenance expenses during pilot and deployment phases are estimated at $1.1 million annually. In total, it is estimated that the net present value of costs to design, build, test, deploy, and operate a robust e-GP system is $16.7 million for a typical low- and middle-income country (at an 8% discount rate). While there are many tangible benefits of e-GP, the benefit assessed here is the reduction in the prices of goods, works, and services paid by government buyers. Using the average percentage reduction in procurement prices of 6.75%, the savings from an e-procurement system are valued at $637.9 million and $5.2 billion for low- and lower middle-income countries, respectively. The benefit–cost ratio of implementing an e-GP system in the average low-income country ranges from 8 to 58 and is 142 to 473 for a lower middle-income country. The size of the procurement market, the reduction in procurement prices, the duration of the implementation process, and the penetration rate of e-GP throughout government are principal determinants in the return on investment. Modern economics includes two fundamentally different fields, but identically labelled 'Cultural Economics'. The first type deals with cultural institutions in a specific sector of the economy and society: the performing arts, visual arts, and other forms of cultural industry. The second type analyses how culture influences the economy in the form of shared beliefs, norms, and preferences. The two types of Cultural Economics largely disregard each other. This paper argues that their mutual existence should be acknowledged and possible relationships between the fields should be analysed. Future interconnected research opportunities are suggested. Blockchain technology originally finding applications in Fintech and supply chain management is rapidly expanding applications to other industries as well as the public sector. “Blockchain has been compared to the invention of the internet and its comprehensive impact on almost every industry.” R. Beck and B. Markey-Towler (2017) A recent study by PWC (2020) found that, “Blockchain technology has the potential to boost global gross domestic product by $1.76 trillion USD over this decade.” It has been argued that the digital revolution has favored more developed nations and that has helped create a “digital divide” with less developed nations. Business and governmental infrastructure in developing nations have lagged that of more developed nations. Some of these challenges faced by developing nations include the registration of property ownership, financial systems, modern efficient supply chains often accompanied by a lack of trust and the ability to verify and audit organizational processes rapidly and economically. Blockchain technology has the promise to address many of the critical needs of developing countries internally and in external trade relationships to help enable them to be more competitive. This paper will review the literature and examine the impact of Blockchain technology on how its adoption may ameliorate many of these critical challenges for developing nations helping to improve governance and economic benefits that are shared more equitably. Potential for both positive and negative impacts with be discussed along with policy implications for public policy makers and private enterprises.

Research purpose. The COVID-19 pandemic has become a theme of the research on the functioning of the economy and particular industries. The same concerns were raised regarding the issue of the cultural industry. Therefore, the content of this paper was dictated by the recognition of the impact of the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic on the activities of the cultural industry in Poland. The formulated research question reads: “How did the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic impact the economic standing of the Polish cultural industry?”
