The article describes the waveform monitoring complex of the linear induction accelerator designed for radiographic experiments. The equipment of the complex allows recording waveforms of hundreds of pulsed signals with duration of tens of nanoseconds to tens of milliseconds, which provides comprehensive information on the operation of the accelerator. The article addresses a wide range of issues: architecture of the waveform monitoring complex, types of primary sensors, techniques of analog signal transmission with low distortion, hardware, software, and methods of data processing.

The electron cooling system for the NICA booster has been under construction and tested over the last few years at the Institute of Nuclear Physics. The design of this setup and the results of tests are detailed.

The product of the electronic width of the ψ(2S) meson and the branching fraction of its decay to the muon pair was measured in the e + e − → ψ (2S) → μ + μ − process using nine data sets corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 6.5 pb−1 collected with the KEDR detector at the VEPP-4M electron–positron collider: Γ e e × B μ μ = 19.3 ± 0.3 ± 0.5 eV . Adding the previous KEDR results on hadronic and leptonic channels, the values of the ψ(2S) electronic width were obtained under two assumptions: either with the assumption of lepton universality Γ e e = 2.279 ± 0.015 ± 0.042 keV or without it, summing up hadronic and three independent leptonic channels Γ e e = 2.282 ± 0.015 ± 0.042 keV .

The LIA-2 linear induction accelerator has been designed in the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics as an electron-beam injector for a promising 20-MeV induction accelerator intended for tomography. Owing to the results of the first tests, it was decided to use the injector as an independent X-ray installation [1]. In 2014, the high-voltage power supply system of the LIA-2 was upgraded and tuned. The accelerator operates stably in the one-pulse mode at energies of up to 1.7 MeV; in the double-pulse mode it operates at energies of up to 1.5 MeV. The inhomogeneity in energy in each pulse does not exceed ±0.5%.

The present status of two operating BINP electron-positron colliders VEPP-2000 and VEPP-4M is given.

The National Synchrotron Light Source II is a third generation light source, which was constructed at Brookhaven National Laboratory. This project includes a highly-optimized 3 GeV electron storage ring, linac preinjector, and full-energy synchrotron injector. Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics built and delivered the booster for NSLS-II. The commissioning of the booster was successfully completed. This paper reviews fulfilled work by participants.

The present work continues a series of the KEDR measurements of the $R$ value that started in 2010 at the VEPP-4M $e^+e^-$ collider. By combining new data with our previous results in this energy range we measured the values of $R_{\text{uds}}$ and $R$ at nine center-of-mass energies between 3.08 and 3.72 GeV. The total accuracy is about or better than $2.6\%$ at most of energy points with a systematic uncertainty of about $1.9\%$. Together with the previous precise $R$ measurement at KEDR in the energy range 1.84-3.05 GeV, it constitutes the most detailed high-precision $R$ measurement near the charmonium production threshold., arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1610.02827 and substantial text overlap with arXiv:1510.02667

We present the analysis of all KEDR data on the determination of J / ψ and ψ ( 2 S ) masses. The data comprise six scans of J / ψ and seven scans of ψ ( 2 S ) which were performed at the VEPP-4M e + e − collider in 2002–2008. The beam energy was determined using the resonance depolarization method. The detector and accelerator conditions during scans were very different that increases the reliability of the averaged results. The analysis accounts for partial correlations of systematic uncertainties on the masses. The following mass values were obtained: M J / ψ = 3096.900 ± 0.002 ± 0.006 MeV , M ψ ( 2 S ) = 3686.099 ± 0.004 ± 0.009 MeV . These results supersede our previous measurements published in 2003 and 2012.

Two types of the high-voltage cells are developed for a 20 MeV, 2 kA linear induction accelerator and a 2 MeV injector. Each accelerator's cell incorporates 16 inductors, it is supplied in an inductive voltage adder manner with a pulse voltage up to 336 kV and different flattop duration of 60–380 ns. At the first stage the cells were tested in a 60 ns pulse mode, the test results with an overvoltage up to 400 kV are presented. Few imperfections have been discovered during experiments and excluded. The inductors are made of an iron-based alloy, test results of magnet cores batch are presented.

VEPP-2000 is electron-positron collider exploiting the novel concept of round colliding beams. After three seasons of data taking in the whole energy range of 160-1000 MeV per beam it was stopped in 2013 for injection chain upgrade. The linking to the new BINP source of intensive beams together with booster synchrotron modernization provides the drastic luminosity gain at top energy of VEPP-2000.

The ratio of the electron and muon widths of the J / ψ meson has been measured using direct J / ψ decays in the KEDR experiment at the VEPP-4M electron–positron collider. The result Γ e + e − ( J / ψ ) / Γ μ + μ − ( J / ψ ) = 1.0022 ± 0.0044 ± 0.0048 ( 0.65 % ) is in good agreement with the lepton universality. The experience collected during this analysis will be used for J / ψ lepton width determination with up to 1% accuracy.

Using the KEDR detector at the VEPP-4M e + e − collider, we have determined the values of R at thirteen points of the center-of-mass energy between 1.84 and 3.05 GeV. The achieved accuracy is about or better than 3.9 % at most of the energy points with a systematic uncertainty less than 2.4 % .

The article describes a model of permanent magnet wiggler (PMWM) to reduce the emittance of accelerator Petra III. The PMWM model is one wiggler period (the period λ =0.2 m; the distance between the poles is 0.024 m and the maximal magnitude of magnetic field B is 1.5 T). BINP SB RAS have developed and manufactured a system to measure magnetic moment of permanent magnets (PMs) with accuracy ⩽5×10 −4 with PMs ⩽0.09 m in size.

Three elliptical undulators HU256 (period 256 mm) of electromagnetic type were produced, tested and magnetically measured by the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics (Russia) for Synchrotron SOLEIL (France). The undulators have a new design of a Bx and Bz closed structure for insertion vacuum chamber. The magnetic calculations of the individual dipoles and undulator structures were executed by means of Mermaid 3D Code. The expected magnetic parameters for all manufactured dipoles were fulfilled on basis of these model dependences from the mechanical characteristics (pole gap, yoke width, and coil position). The estimated 1st integral of all dipoles had been used in an optimal arrangement of the dipoles in undulators (sorting). Owing to the realized sorting, the 1st integral of the magnetic field and phase error of the assembled undulators had been decreased in comparison with the statistic estimations. The special Hall probes systems for the magnetic measurements of the undulators HU256 were designed and manufactured by the BINP. All three HU256 undulators were magnetically measured at the BINP and re-measured at the SOLEIL after transportation. The results of magnetic measurements and model estimates are compared and analyzed.

The article describes a prototype of the permanent magnet (PM) wiggler to reduce the emittance of the accelerator Petra III. The wiggle has the following parameters: the length is 4.04 m; the pole gap is 0.024 m and the maximal field is B=1.56 T; the wiggler has 20 periods with λ=0.2 m.

BESSY operates a third generation synchrotron light source in VUV to XUV region at Berlin-Adlershof. The main radiation sources in storage ring are special magnetic elements such as undulators and wigglers. Three superconducting shifters and one multipole superconducting wiggler are operating giving enhanced photon flux for 10–25 keV X-ray region. As the superconducting elements presently are located in straight sections, BESSY intends to exchange four of the conventional room-temperature bending magnets by superconducting ones. The report contains brief description of 9 T superbend prototype as a candidate for replacing of conventional magnets of BESSY-II, which was designed, fabricated and tested at Budker INP and was commissioned at BESSY in June 2004. Main parameters of 9 T superconducting bending magnet prototype as well as testing results are presented.

The paper describes the software of the standalone control system for 49-poles superconducting wiggler with magnetic field 3.5 T. This wiggler was fabricated in Budker INP for ELETTRA Storage Ring (Trieste, Italy). The description of instrumentation is brief. Unlike this, the software description is more detailed, as software basically determines functional capabilities of standalone system. Described software consists of two parts: embedded part operating in VME controller and high-level part operation on host machine. Embedded part is the main part of the software. It provides the interactions with the hardware and realizes all algorithms for MSCW control. Host software organizes user interface.

The dipole bending magnets (BM) for SR Source Storage Ring (prefecture SAGA, Japan) were designed, manufactured and measured by the Budker INP, Novosibirsk, Russia. The main features of magnetic modeling and magnetic measurements are presented in the paper. The measured basic parameters of the manufactured bending magnets have good agreement with the model simulation.

The digital integration method based on using high-speed precision analog-to-digital converters (ADC) has become widely used over the recent years. The paper analyzes the limitations of this method that are caused by the signal properties, ADC sampling rate and noise spectral density of the ADC signal path. This analysis allowed creating digital integrators with accurate synchronization and achieving an integration error of less than 10−5 in the time range from microseconds to tens of seconds. The structure of the integrator is described and its basic parameters are presented. The possibilities of different ADC chips in terms of their applicability to digital integrators are discussed. A comparison with other integrating devices is presented.

The existing research methods are insufficient for investigation of the detonation physics because of very high pressure, rapidity and aggressiveness of explosion. Therefore, new methods allowing direct experimental investigation with the help of SR are of great interest. This paper suggests and describes realization of a new method for remote investigation of the detonation and shock wave processes with the help of SR. Presented below is a description of the experimental facility at which the first studies on the measurement of the passed radiation and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) at detonation of condensed explosives were conducted.

A high-power infrared free electron laser is under construction in Novosibirsk. As the full-scale machine seems to be complicated and quite expensive, the project was divided into two stages so that the first-stage machine can be assembled and commissioned as soon as possible. Main features of the project and the current status are described.

This paper describes the control and DAQ system of superconducting wigglers with magnetic field range up to 10.3 T. The first version of the system controls a 7 T superconducting wiggler prepared for installation at Bessy-II (Germany). The second one controls a 10 T wiggler which is under testing now at the SPring-8 site (Japan). Both systems are based on VME apparatus. The set of specialized VME modules is elaborated to arrange wiggler power supply control, full time wiggler monitoring, and magnetic field high accuracy measurement and field stabilization. The software for the control of the wigglers is written in C language for VxWorks operation system for a Motorola-162 VME controller. The task initialization, stops and acquisition of the data can be done from the nearest personal computer (FTP host for VME), or from the remote system as well.

In 1999, in the frame of the project ISTC #767 “Budker INP/RIKEN Slow Positron Source”, the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics had made a 10 T Three-pole Superconducting Wiggler. The wiggler will be the keystone of this project by its installation on the SPring-8 storage ring for powerful gamma ray generation ( λ c =450 keV ), that will be used for slow positron production (Nγ(e>1 MeV)∼1015, γ/s I e =0.1 A ). A. Ando et al., Proposal of the high magnetic field super conducting WLS for slow positron source at SPring-8, presented at SR1 ’97 Conference. In January, 2000, the wiggler was transported to SPring-8, where the last test and measurements were carried out in collaboration with Japan. In this article, the results of measurements of the magnetic field, finding the magnetic field amplitude by an NMR probe, the definition of feed current relations by stretch current wire method, the calibration of a Hall probe in the high magnetic field, and the measurement of the magnetic field profile by a Hall probe are presented.

The KEDR collaboration has taken data for R measurements at energies 3.1–3.7 GeV. Preliminary results from the analysis of these data are presented.

The paper describes the design, magnetic computations and measurements of the elliptical undulator HU256 for Synchrotron Soleil (France): the new technology for insertion vacuum chamber has permitted the design of a Bx & Bz dipole closed structure for an electromagnetic undulator. This magnetic design has been realized on the basis of the 2-D, 3-D modeling (Mermaid and RADIA codes), and dependence's of the magnetic field integrals from the main macroscopic parameters have been obtained. The undulator can work in standard and quasi-periodical modes. The single dipoles and the undulator HU256 were magnetically measured by a Hall probes system. The results of magnetic measurements and computations are compared and analyzed

The digital LLRF controller based on embedded microcontroller for the booster of the Dubna superconducting accelerator complex NICA is presented. It allows setting the frequency in accordance with the magnetic field value in the 0.5–5 MHz range with an inaccuracy ± 110 Hz. A novel method of frequency calculation based on the derivative is proposed. The specialized tester module allows tuning up and checking the RF system during comissioning and operation.

Three elliptical undulators HU256 of electromagnetic type were produced, tested and magnetically measured by the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics (Russia) for Synchrotron Soleil (France). The undulators have a new design of a Bx & Bz closed structure for insertion vacuum chamber. In the elliptical undulator HU256 with period of the magnetic fields of 256 mm, the vertical magnetic field (Bzmax=0.44 T) formed by 27 Bz laminated dipole magnets is symmetric, and the horizontal magnetic field (Bxmax=0.33 T) formed by 28 Bx laminated dipole magnets is asymmetric. The undulator can work in standard mode as well as in a quasi‐periodical mode. The vertical magnetic field may be modulated by switching on the modulation coils placed on the Bz dipoles. Two power supply systems allow us to modulate the horizontal magnetic field, and change the radiation spectrum. The magnetic calculations of the individual dipoles and dipoles in “undulator” environment were executed by means of Mermaid 3D Code. The magnetic measurements of the individual dipoles had confirmed the magnetic calculations. On basis of semiempirical dependences from the mechanical characteristics the estimates of the magnetic parameters for all dipoles were calculated. Sorting of dipoles in the undulators have been done, and it has improved the magnetic parameters of the assembled undulators in comparison with the statistical estimations. The magnetic measurements of the undulators HU256 were carried out at Budker INP by Hall probes and at Soleil by Hall probes and Stretched Wire. Now the 1st undulator HU256 is installed at Soleil Storage Ring.

The first superconducting insertion devices were designed, fabricated and installed on electron storage rings more than 25 years ago, and used for generation of synchrotron radiation in Budker INP. Since then, a wide experience of manufacturing and use of such superconducting (SC) insertion devices as SC wave length shifters, multipole wigglers, and superbend is accumulated. A review of various types of Superconducting Insertion Devices for Light Sources is given in the report. Their basic characteristics as SR sources are discussed.

The necessity of extending the useful spectrum of synchrotron radiation at higher energies (> 10 keV) for X‐Ray Diffraction applications was the reason for developing and constructing a novel superconducting insertion device the Elettra storage ring. The superconducting wiggler with 45 full poles and a field strength of 3.5 T, 16.5 mm magnetic gap and a period of 64 mm has been developed and produced by the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics SB RAS. This article describes some technical properties and characteristics of the wiggler as well as the results of the wiggler tests.

Since 2004 the KEDR detector at the VEPP-4M collider has taken several data sets in the ψ(2S) region, acquiring total luminosity of about 7 pb-1, which corresponds to more than 3.5 × 106ψ(2S). We report the preliminary value of Γee × Γμμ/Γ = 19.4 ± 0.4 ± 1.1 eV for ψ(2S).

We report results of experiments performed with the KEDR detector at the VEPP-4M e+e- collider. They include final results for the mass and other parameters of the J/ψ, ψ(2S) and ψ(3770) and J/ψ → γηc branching fraction determination.

An experimental study has been made of the phenomena determining the geometric resolution of a linear CCD as an integrating X-ray detector with storing of the charges of multiple events in its cells. Ways of improving the CCD resolution are discussed.

A three-pole 10-T superconducting wiggler was installed in the 8-GeV electron storage ring at SPring-8 for generating high-energy synchrotron radiation. Beam tests were carried out to check its performance and to investigate the effects on a stored beam. A beam was successfully stored at magnetic fields of the wiggler up to 9.7 T. The beam current was limited to 1 mA to avoid unnecessarily high heat-load on photon absorbers and radiation damage to accelerator components. Beam parameters such as a horizontal beam size, a bunch length, betatron tune shifts were measured. A spectrum of high-energy synchrotron radiation from the wiggler was also measured with the NaI scintillator at an extremely low beam current of about 8 pA.
