There is a positive correlation between Helicobacter pylori infection and chronic active gastritis, peptic ulcer and gastric cancer and maltoma. There is little information on H. pylori profiles in farmers and non-farmers in the literature. Our main objective was to study the H. pylori profiles in farmers and non-formers in the United Arab Emirates. A prospective study of 151 subjects - 76 farmers and 75 non-farmers - was undertaken by determining their IgG and IgA H. pylori antibody profiles in their serum samples. Data on lifestyle were obtained from them. Eligible subjects were those who had engaged in farming for at least five years and who had not received an anti-H. pylori treatment during the six months prior to admission into the study. Most of the farmers lived in less modern accommodation, were less educated, ate their vegetable products unwashed, did not have drinking water facilities, when compared to non-farmers. Helicobacter pylori serology by IgG and IgA was positive in 112 and 77 subjects respectively (p0.0001). The sensitivity values for IgG and IgA serology tests were 74.2 and 51.0% respectively (p0.001). There were 59 and 42 H. pylori-positive farmers by IgG and IgA H. pylori serology tests respectively (p0.001). Among the non-farmers, the corresponding figures were 53 and 25 (p0.01), and neither IgG nor IgA (p = 0.4), respectively. The H. pylori serology test was able to differentiate between farmers and non-farmers. When the discordant values between IgG and IgA tests were computed for each group of subjects, the difference was significant for both farmers and non-farmers (p0.001 in each case). There was no difference between the farmers and non-farmers in respect of their H. pylori profiles. The farmers have a lower standard of living than non-farmers.

The aim of the present study is to determine the effect of blood lead on the health of industrial workers in United Arab Emirates (UAE). This is a cross-sectional pilot survey of blood lead levels (BLL) of 100 industrial workers (exposed) and 100 non-industrial workers (nonexposed), matched for age, sex and nationality selected from Al-Ain, Abu-Dhabi Emirate. Industrial workers had significantly higher mean of BLL (77.5±42.8 μg/dl and median 80.9 μg/dl) than non-industrial workers (19.8±12.3 μg/dl and median 11.0 μg/dl). In the present study, reported symptoms among industrial workers were strongly associated with BLL nausea/vomiting, muscular symptoms, dizziness, fatigue, irritability, memory disturbances, insomnia and allergic conjuctivitis, rhinitis and dermatitis. Furthermore, the present study revealed that industrial workers had higher prevalence of respiratory symptoms for phlegm, shortness of breath and diagnosed asthma. In conclusion, this study determined that occurrence of certain symptoms might be associated with lead exposure among industrial workers. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of pesticides on farm workers and to identify some risk factors associated with pesticide conditions may cause adverse health effects in farm workers in the United Arab Emirates. This case-control study consisted of 103 farm workers (case) and 105 non-farm workers (control), matched for age, sex and nationality selected from Al-Ain city, Dubai, Sharjah and Fujairah Emirates. Indian-subcontinent workers represented the majority among farmers (90.3%) and non-farmers (82.9%). While the majority of farmers were illiterate and had low level of education, the non-farmers slightly shifted towards a higher level of education (p < 0.0001). Most of the farmers were living in prefabricated houses (50.5%) and were washing the harvested product (72.8%) before eating. Farmers had higher prevalence of symptoms than non-farmers, being significantly greater for diarrhoea (p < 0.016), nausea/vomiting (p < 0.003), rash (p < 0.002), red/irritated eye/blurred vision (p < 0.024)...

This study aims at predicting Carbon monoxide (CO) emission rate as well as carboxyhaemoglobin (HbCO) levelsin Al-Ain City, United Arab Emirates (UAE). Also, several mathematical models are proposed for estimating both CO emission and HbCO levels. These models yield excellent agreements between observed and predicted data and can be easily coupled with atmospheric models. Carbon monoxide exposure from motor vehicles were measured over a 3-month period from September to December 1995 at three locations in the UAE. The study is based on a sample of 148 cars. The data revealed that the major characteristics of the cars surveyed were as follows: 69.5% of the cars were Japanese, 74.3% of the cars were 5 years old; 41% of the car was range rover or four-wheel-drive car, which indicates a higher proportion of powerful cars; 58.8% was used special fuel; 51.4% had regular maintenance for their cars and 52% of the cars had 4 cylinder engine capacity. Carboxyhaemoglobin (HbCO) levels in the UAE were predicted for 1-hour (1.720 ppm) and 8-hour (8.106 ppm) exposure times. Also, on an average driving of 80 km hr−1 per day, the CO emission rate was found to be 8.729 ppm. These findings indicate that the mean 1-hour and 8-hour Carboxyhaemoglobin (HbCO) levels do not exceed the permissible standards recommended by the WHO. Additionally, the results of stepwise multiple regression analyses revealed that the factors, such as, type of car, size of cylinder, size of car, and maintaining service of the car exerted the greatest influence on the amount and concentration of pollutant emission produced by car exhaust.

Whole blood lead levels were estimated by atomic absorption analysis in 226 blood samples from 113 mothers of 23 different nationalities. Samples were collected before delivery, and from cord blood from their respective neonates. The concentrations of blood lead were within the expected range of occupationally unexposed populations. Mean maternal blood lead levels were 0.72 0.10 mumol/l (14.9 2.14 mug/dl), range 0.32-1.34 mumol/l (6.6-27.8 mug/dl) and mean cord blood levels were 0.64 0.12 mumol/l (range 0.29-1.46 mumol/l). Sixteen percent of the mothers and nearly 10% cord blood samples were found to have blood lead level greater than 0.97 mumol/l (20 mug/dl). Very high levels, in excess of 1.21 mumol/l (25 mug/dl), were detected in 3.5% of mothers as compared to 2.6% of cord blood samples. Date-Palm trees (Phoenix dactylifera L.) are the most abundant crop in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The aim of this work was to conduct aerobiological studies on Date-Palm pollens and correlate that to allergenicity. An aerobiological survey was performed at three Date-Palm farms. Radioallergosorbent test (RAST) and total IgE were performed on 477 airborne allergic patients. Small mass bioactive constituents were fractionated and isolated by HPLC. Aerobiological studies demonstrate the short distance traveled by the Date-Palm pollens. Pollen counts were about 800 counts/m3 within the Date-Palm farms and decreased by about 80% just 100 meters away from the farm area and almost diminished beyond 200 meters. Scanning electron micrograph of the pollen grain showed a uniform smooth texture with an oval shape. Out of 477 airborne allergic patients having high total IgE counts, only 2.3% gave positive RAST for Date-Palm pollen. HPLC chromatogram separated the non-protein content of Date-Palm pollen into four distinct peak fractions. The present study revealed that Date-Palm pollens have a low allergic effect on airborne allergic people. The short distance traveled by the pollen, the smooth texture, the short pollination period and low molecular weight biomolecule content may be the main factors behind the low allergenicity.

Industrial workers had higher proportion (19%) of smokers than non-industrial workers (11%) which was not considered to be statistically significantly different. Industrial workers had significantly higher mean of blood lead level (77.5 +/- 42.8 miccrog x dl(-1)) than non-industrial workers (19.8 +/- 12.3 microg x dl(-1)). The amino acid analysis showed higher values among industrial than non-industrial workers for histidine, isoleucine, leucine, threonine, lysine, valine, methionine and arginine (essential amino acids, (p0.0001). Ornithine, taurine, glutamic acid, serine, glycine, proline and alanine (non-essential amino acids) showed significantly higher values in industrial when compared with the non-industrial workers (p0.0001). Plasma liver function test, cardiac enzymes and renal function test were carried out on industrial and non-industrial workers. The results revealed alkaline phosphatase (p=0.012) and lactate dehydrogenase (p=0.029) were significantly higher in industrial than in non-industrial workers. On the basis of this study, it can be concluded that a substantial difference in amino acid profiles, blood lead and LFT between exposed and non-exposed was found. These results might be related to lead exposure and might have affects on the kidneys or liver.
