Abstract

An experimental study of 256Rf spontaneous fission following the fusion reaction of 50Ti+208Pb was performed using the velocity filter SHELS of the Flerov laboratory at JINR. The average number of neutrons of ν‾=4.30±0.17 and variance of σν2=3.2 from the prompt neutron multiplicity distribution were obtained. The alpha decay branching ratio of bα=0.003−0.003+0.005 and the half-life of T1/2=(6.7±0.2) ms of the isotope were determined. For the first time, our neutron detector system allowed us to extend investigation of the prompt neutron multiplicity study to the superheavy element region.

Abstract

The analysis of fission events following the implantation of evaporation residues produced in the fusion reaction of 50Ti and 209Bi at different bombarding energies has revealed 5 millisecond decays, which are attributed to the spontaneous fission of proton-evaporation channels. The average cross sections for proton evaporation are found to be ∼100 and 10 times smaller than the largest neutron-evaporation channel cross section at the same excitation energy. These results suggest that the proton evaporation channel, albeit weak, may represent a realistic alternative to synthesize new, more neutron rich super heavy nuclei. Abstract

In deep inelastic multinucleon transfer reactions of 48Ca + 248Cm we observed about 100 residual nuclei with proton numbers between Z=82 and Z=100. Among them, there are five new neutron-deficient isotopes: 216U, 219Np, 223Am, 229Am and 233Bk. As separator for the transfer products we used the velocity filter SHIP of GSI while the isotope identification was performed via the α decay chains of the nuclei. These first results reveal that multinucleon transfer reactions together with here applied fast and sensitive separation and detection techniques are promising for the synthesis of new isotopes in the region of heaviest nuclei.

Abstract

The main goal of creation of a Superheavy Element Factory at the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions (FLNR) is to sufficiently improve the efficiency of studies on heavy and superheavy nuclei. The factory will be based on a high-current DC-280 cyclotron. The use of beams with the intensity up to 6 × 10 13 s−1 (10 pμA) requires effective separators providing high suppression of unwanted reaction products. Following the analysis of the kinematic characteristics of several hundreds of reactions, a conclusion was drawn that it is necessary to construct three separators optimized for specific tasks: a universal gas-filled separator for synthesis and study of the properties of heavy isotopes, a velocity filter for spectroscopic investigations, and a pre-separator for further chemical separation and precise mass measurements.

11. Measurement of the 238U spontaneous-fission halflife by detecting prompt neutrons

Abstract

Spontaneous-fission events were identified by measuring the multiple neutron emission from different samples. A neutron detector based on a 3He proportional counter has been used. The obtained value of the spontaneous-fission halflife of 238U was T 1 2 = (8.8 ± 0.4) × 10 15 y which agrees with the data of several other authors.
