1. Dynamic charge order from strong correlations in the cuprates

Abstract: Charge order has been a central focus in the study of cuprate high-temperature superconductors due to its intriguing yet not fully understood connection to superconductivity. Recent advances in resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) in the soft x-ray regime have enabled the first momentum-resolved studies of dynamic charge order correlations in the cuprates. This progress has opened a window for a more nuanced investigation into the mechanisms behind the formation of charge order (CO) correlations. This review provides an overview of RIXS-based measurements of dynamic CO correlations in various cuprate materials. It specifically focuses on electron-doped cuprates and Bi-based hole-doped cuprates, where the CO-related RIXS signals may reveal signatures of the effective Coulomb interactions. This aims to explore a connection between two central phenomena in the cuprates: strong Coulomb correlations and CO-forming tendencies. Finally, we discuss current open questions and potential directions for future RIXS studies as the technique continues to improve and mature, along with other probes of dynamic correlations that would provide a more comprehensive picture.

2. Superconductivity Mediated by Nematic Fluctuations in Tetragonal $\textrm{Fe}\textrm{Se}_{1-x}\textrm{S}_{x}$

Abstract: Nematic phases, where electrons in a solid spontaneously break rotational symmetry while preserving the translational symmetry, exist in several families of unconventional superconductors [1, 2]. Although superconductivity mediated by nematic fluctuations is well established theoretically [3-7], it has yet to be unambiguously identified experimentally [8, 9]. A major challenge is that nematicity is often intertwined with other degrees of freedom, such as magnetism and charge order. The FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$ family of iron based superconductors provides a unique opportunity to explore this concept, as it features an isolated nematic phase that can be suppressed by sulfur substitution at a quantum critical point (QCP) near $x_c = 0.17$, where nematic fluctuations are the largest [10-12]. Here, we performed scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements to visualize Boguliubov quasiparticle interference patterns, from which we determined the momentum structure of the superconducting gap near the Brillouin zone $\Gamma$ point of FeSe$_{0.81}$S$_{0.19}$. The results reveal an anisotropic, near nodal gap with minima that are $45^\circ$ rotated with respect to the Fe-Fe direction, characteristic of a nematic pairing interaction, contrary to the usual isotropic gaps due to spin mediated pairing in other tetragonal Fe-based superconductors. The results are also in contrast with pristine FeSe, where the pairing is mediated by spin fluctuations and the gap minima are aligned with the Fe-Fe direction. Therefore, the measured gap structure demonstrates not only a fundamental change of the pairing mechanism across the phase diagram of FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$, but it also indicates the existence of superconductivity mediated by nematic fluctuations in FeSe$_{0.81}$S$_{0.19}$.

3. Kink in cuprates: the role of the low-energy density of states

Abstract: The 40-70 meV band-structure renormalization (so-called kink) in high-temperature cuprate superconductors - which has been mainly interpreted in terms of electron-boson coupling - is observed to be strongly suppressed both above the superconducting transition temperature and under optical excitation. We employ equilibrium and time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, in combination with Migdal-Eliashberg simulations, to investigate the suppression of the near-nodal kink in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$. We show that the $\sim$30$\%$ decrease of the kink strength across the superconducting-to-normal-state phase transition can be entirely accounted for by the filling of the superconducting gap, without additional consideration of temperature-dependent electron-boson coupling. Our findings demonstrate that consideration of changes in the density of states is essential to quantitatively account for the band structure renormalization effects in cuprates.

Abstract: Recent improvements in the energy resolution of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiments (RIXS) at the Cu-L$_3$ edge have enabled the study of lattice, spin, and charge excitations. Here, we report on the detection of a low intensity signal at 140meV, twice the energy of the bond-stretching (BS) phonon mode, in the cuprate superconductor $\textrm{Bi}_2\textrm{Sr}_2\textrm{Ca}\textrm{Cu}_2\textrm{O}_{8+x}$ (Bi-2212). Ultra-high resolution polarimetric RIXS measurements allow us to resolve the outgoing polarization of the signal and identify this feature as a two-phonon excitation. Further, we study the connection between the two-phonon mode and the BS one-phonon mode by constructing a joint density of states toy model that reproduces the key features of the data.

Abstract: During a band-gap-tuned semimetal-to-semiconductor transition, Coulomb attraction between electrons and holes can cause spontaneously formed excitons near the zero-band-gap point, or the Lifshitz transition point. This has become an important route to realize bulk excitonic insulators -- an insulating ground state distinct from single-particle band insulators. How this route manifests from weak to strong coupling is not clear. In this work, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction (XRD), we investigate the broken symmetry state across the semimetal-to-semiconductor transition in a leading bulk excitonic insulator candidate system Ta2Ni(Se,S)5. A broken symmetry phase is found to be continuously suppressed from the semimetal side to the semiconductor side, contradicting the anticipated maximal excitonic instability around the Lifshitz transition. Bolstered by first-principles and model calculations, we find strong interband electron-phonon coupling to play a crucial role in the enhanced symmetry breaking on the semimetal side of the phase diagram. Our results not only provide insight into the longstanding debate of the nature of intertwined orders in Ta2NiSe5, but also establish a basis for exploring band-gap-tuned structural and electronic instabilities in strongly coupled systems., Comment: 27 pages, 4 + 9 figures

Abstract: The ability to reversibly toggle between two distinct states in a non-volatile method is important for information storage applications. Such devices have been realized for phase-change materials, which utilizes local heating methods to toggle between a crystalline and an amorphous state with distinct electrical properties. To expand such kind of switching between two topologically distinct phases requires non-volatile switching between two crystalline phases with distinct symmetries. Here we report the observation of reversible and non-volatile switching between two stable and closely-related crystal structures with remarkably distinct electronic structures in the near room temperature van der Waals ferromagnet Fe$_{5-\delta}$GeTe$_2$. From a combination of characterization techniques we show that the switching is enabled by the ordering and disordering of an Fe site vacancy that results in distinct crystalline symmetries of the two phases that can be controlled by a thermal annealing and quenching method. Furthermore, from symmetry analysis as well as first principle calculations, we provide understanding of the key distinction in the observed electronic structures of the two phases: topological nodal lines compatible with the preserved global inversion symmetry in the site-disordered phase, and flat bands resulting from quantum destructive interference on a bipartite crystaline lattice formed by the presence of the site order as well as the lifting of the topological degeneracy due to the broken inversion symmetry in the site-ordered phase. Our work not only reveals a rich variety of quantum phases emergent in the metallic van der Waals ferromagnets due to the presence of site ordering, but also demonstrates the potential of these highly tunable two-dimensional magnets for memory and spintronics applications.

7. Electronic Stripe Patterns Near the Fermi Level of Tetragonal Fe(Se,S)

Abstract: FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$ remains one of the most enigmatic systems of Fe-based superconductors. While much is known about the orthorhombic parent compound, FeSe, the tetragonal samples, FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$ with x>0.17, remain relatively unexplored. Here, we provide an in-depth investigation of the electronic states of tetragonal FeSe$_{0.81}$S$_{0.19}$, using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/S) measurements, supported by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and theoretical modeling. We demonstrate that by analyzing modulations of the local density of states (LDOS) near and away from Fe vacancy defects separately, we can identify quasiparticle interference (QPI) signals originating from multiple regions of the Brillouin zone, including the bands at the M and A points. We also observe that QPI signals coexist with a much stronger LDOS modulation for states near the Fermi level whose period is independent of energy. Our measurements further reveal that this strong pattern appears in the STS measurements as short range stripe patterns that are locally two-fold symmetric. Since these stripe patterns coexist with four-fold symmetric QPI around Fe-vacancies, the origin of their local two-fold symmetry must be distinct from that of nematic states in orthorhombic samples. To further understand these stripe patterns, we explore several aspects related to them, such as the role of S and Fe vacancy defects, and whether they can be explained by QPI. We consider the possibility that the observed stripe patterns may represent incipient charge order correlations, similar to those observed in the cuprates.

8. Common gastrointestinal symptoms in healthy infants receiving goat milk-based formula or cow’s milk-based formula: a double-blind, randomized, controlled trial

Abstract: Abstract Objective To assess common gastrointestinal symptoms in healthy Brazilian infants receiving goat milk-based formula (GMF) compared to cow’s milk-based formula (CMF). Methods We performed a 24-weeks double-blind, randomized, controlled study in Brazil, enrolling healthy infants from 3 to 12 months of age. Primary outcome were the gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms stool consistency, regurgitation frequency and crying duration. Secondary outcomes were growth trajectories and hemoglobin levels. Repeated mixed models were used to compare outcomes variables between GMF and CMF groups, while adjusting for age at baseline. Results Fifty-six infants were recruited and randomly allocated in the GMF (n = 26) and the CMF (n = 30) group. Scores on all measured GI symptoms were low and similar among the groups throughout intervention period and improved over time. Average age- and sex-adjusted WHO z-scores of weight, length, head circumference, and weight-for-length were all within +/-1 SD and similar between groups, indicating adequate growth. Serum hemoglobin was 11.1 (SD 0.7) g/dL in infants fed GMF and 11.0 (SD 0.8) g/dL in infants fed CMF after the intervention and was similar between groups. Conclusion GMF was well tolerated, safe and supported adequate growth in infants. This was shown by the low occurrence of GI symptoms, adequate blood hemoglobin levels and adequate growth within WHO standards. Trial registration The clinical trial was approved by the ethics committee of the Federal University of Bahia under number CAAE06923319.5.0000.5577. The study was retrospectively registered in clinicaltrials.gov on 02/05/2024 under identifier NCT06395571.

9. Physical Activity during School-Time and Fundamental Movement Skills: A Study among Preschoolers with and without Physical Education Classes

Abstract: Purpose: To analyze associations between physical activity (PA) during school hours and fundamental movement skills (FMS) of young children with and without PE classes. Methods: This cross-sectional study examined 201 children of both sexes (102 girls, 50.7%), aged 3-5 years old (4.51 ± 0.79), who were engaged (n = 129) or not (n = 72) in physical education (PE) classes weekly. Light (LPA) and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) were assessed by accelerometer during school hours over five consecutive days, and FMS was assessed using the TGMD-2. To verify the association between PA (LPA and MVPA) and FMS (locomotor and object control scores) in both PE and NPE groups, multiple linear regression analysis was used. n n Results: MVPA during school hours was significantly associated with object control performance in the PE group ([beta] = 0.14 p = 0.025). A model with LPA and MVPA explained 4% of the object control performance variability. Conclusion: The positive association observed between MVPA and object control skills on those preschoolers involved in PE classes highlight that opportunities in structured PE classes should be used as a central strategy to promote motor development in preschool settings.

10. Interplay of spin and charge order in the electron-doped cuprates

Abstract: We study magnetic and charge order in the electron-doped high-$T_c$ cuprates based on the one-band Hubbard model with onsite ($U$) and nearest-neighbor $(V)$ interactions. To investigate the interplay between the orders, we employ the Kotliar-Ruckenstein slave-boson method and analyze fluctuations descending from an antiferromagnetic parent state. Our analysis reveals incommensurate charge order whose ordering vector matches the doping-dependence of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements in Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ (NCCO). Abstract: In the study of dynamic charge order correlations in the cuprates, most high energy-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements have focused on momenta along the high-symmetry directions of the copper oxide plane. However, electron scattering along other in-plane directions should not be neglected as they may contain information relevant, for example, to the origin of charge order correlations or to our understanding of the isotropic scattering responsible for strange metal behavior in cuprates. We report high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) experiments that reveal the presence of dynamic electron correlations over the $q_x$-$q_y$ scattering plane in underdoped $\textrm{Bi}_2\textrm{Sr}_2\textrm{Ca}\textrm{Cu}_2\textrm{O}_{8+\delta}$ with $T_c=54$ K. We use the softening of the RIXS-measured bond stretching phonon line as a marker for the presence of charge-order-related dynamic electron correlations. The experiments show that these dynamic correlations exist at energies below approximately $70$ meV and are centered around a quasi-circular manifold in the $q_x$-$q_y$ scattering plane with radius equal to the magnitude of the charge order wave vector, $q_{CO}$. We also demonstrate how this phonon-tracking procedure provides the necessary experimental precision to rule out fluctuations of short-range directional charge order (i.e. centered around $[q_x=\pm q_{CO}, q_y=0]$ and $[q_x=0, q_y=\pm q_{CO}]$) as the origin of the observed correlations., Comment: Submitted and under review

Abstract: Abstract Rapid discovery and synthesis of future materials requires intelligent data acquisition strategies to navigate large design spaces. A popular strategy is Bayesian optimization, which aims to find candidates that maximize material properties; however, materials design often requires finding specific subsets of the design space which meet more complex or specialized goals. We present a framework that captures experimental goals through straightforward user-defined filtering algorithms. These algorithms are automatically translated into one of three intelligent, parameter-free, sequential data collection strategies (SwitchBAX, InfoBAX, and MeanBAX), bypassing the time-consuming and difficult process of task-specific acquisition function design. Our framework is tailored for typical discrete search spaces involving multiple measured physical properties and short time-horizon decision making. We demonstrate this approach on datasets for TiO2 nanoparticle synthesis and magnetic materials characterization, and show that our methods are significantly more efficient than state-of-the-art approaches. Overall, our framework provides a practical solution for navigating the complexities of materials design, and helps lay groundwork for the accelerated development of advanced materials.

13. FRR: A Fast Routing Recovery mechanism minimizing network formation time in smart grids

Abstract: In recent years, Internet of Things (IoT) technologies have been applied to the most diverse types of applications, highlighting their use in Smart Grids (SGs), such as smart metering, demand response, fault detection and renewable energy integration, as well as in Smart Cities, such as smart lighting, smart parking and environmental monitoring. A technology that has been widely used in these contexts is the Wireless Smart Ubiquitous Networks Field Area Network (Wi-SUN FAN) standard, which defines the implementation and behavior of interoperable networks based on open standards such as IEEE 802.15.4 and the IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low-Power and Lossy Networks (RPL). The adopted standards allow Wi-SUN FAN networks to take advantage of features such as security, frequency hopping, multi-hop packet routing, and IPv6 addressing, ensuring a wide coverage area and immunity against electromagnetic interference. Despite all the advantages, a shortcoming of Wi-SUN FAN networks is the long network formation time. In this article, we propose a mechanism called Fast Routing Recovery (FRR), which aims to accelerate the reconnection process in networks that use the RPL protocol by memorizing information about the nodes’ preferred parents. We evaluate the FRR mechanism by simulations and experiments. The results indicate that FRR can reduce the network formation time by up to 50% in certain network scenarios.

Abstract: The shape of 3$d$-orbitals often governs the electronic and magnetic properties of correlated transition metal oxides. In the superconducting cuprates, the planar confinement of the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbital dictates the two-dimensional nature of the unconventional superconductivity and a competing charge order. Achieving orbital-specific control of the electronic structure to allow coupling pathways across adjacent planes would enable direct assessment of the role of dimensionality in the intertwined orders. Using Cu-$L_3$ and Pr-$M_5$ resonant x-ray scattering and first-principles calculations, we report a highly correlated three-dimensional charge order in Pr-substituted YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7}$, where the Pr $f$-electrons create a direct orbital bridge between CuO$_2$ planes. With this, we demonstrate that interplanar orbital engineering can be used to surgically control electronic phases in correlated oxides and other layered materials.

Abstract: Abstract Poorly selective mixed-metal cluster synthesis and separation yield reaction solutions of inseparable intermetalloid cluster mixtures, which are often discarded. High-resolution mass spectrometry, however, can provide precise compositional data of such product mixtures. Structure assignments can be achieved by advanced computational screening and consideration of the complete structural space. Here, we experimentally verify structure and composition of a whole cluster ensemble by combining a set of spectroscopic techniques. Our study case are the very similar nickel/gallium clusters of M12, M13 and M14 core composition Ni6+xGa6+y (x + y ≤ 2). The rationalization of structure, bonding and reactivity is built upon the organometallic superatom cluster [Ni6Ga6](Cp*)6 = [Ga6](NiCp*)6 (1; Cp* = C5Me5). The structural conclusions are validated by reactivity tests using carbon monoxide, which selectively binds to Ni sites, whereas (triisopropylsilyl)acetylene selectively binds to Ga sites.

17. Rational Approach to New Chemical Entities with Antiproliferative Activity on Ab1 Tyrosine Kinase Encoded by the BCR-ABL Gene: An Hierarchical Biochemoinformatics Analysis

Abstract: Background: This study began with a search in three databases, totaling six libraries (ChemBridge-DIVERSet, ChemBridge-DIVERSet-EXP, Zinc_Drug Database, Zinc_Natural_Stock, Zinc_FDA_BindingDB, Maybridge) with approximately 2.5 million compounds with the aim of selecting potential inhibitors with antiproliferative activity on the chimeric tyrosine kinase encoded by the BCR-ABL gene. Methods: Through hierarchical biochemoinformatics, ADME/Tox analyses, biological activity prediction, molecular docking simulations, synthetic accessibility and theoretical synthetic routes of promising compounds and their lipophilicity and water solubility were realized. Results: Predictions of toxicological and pharmacokinetic properties (ADME/Tox) using the top100/base (600 structures), in comparison with the commercial drug imatinib, showed that only nine exhibited the desired properties. In the prediction of biological activity, the results of the nine selected structures ranged from 13.7% < Pa < 65.8%, showing them to be potential protein kinase inhibitors. In the molecular docking simulations, the promising molecules LMQC01 and LMQC04 showed significant values in molecular targeting (PDB 1IEP—resolution 2.10 Å). LMQC04 presented better binding affinity (∆G = −12.2 kcal mol−1 with a variation of ±3.6 kcal mol−1) in relation to LMQC01. The LMQC01 and LMQC04 molecules were advanced for molecular dynamics (MD) simulation followed by Molecular Mechanics with generalized Born and Surface Area solvation (MM-GBSA); the comparable, low and stable RMSD and ΔE values for the protein and ligand in each complex suggest that the selected compounds form a stable complex with the Abl kinase domain. This stability is a positive indicator that LMQC01 and LMQC04 can potentially inhibit enzyme function. Synthetic accessibility (SA) analysis performed on the AMBIT and SwissADME webservers showed that LMQC01 and LMQC04 can be considered easy to synthesize. Our in silico results show that these molecules could be potent protein kinase inhibitors with potential antiproliferative activity on tyrosine kinase encoded by the BCR-ABL gene. Conclusions: In conclusion, the results suggest that these ligands, particularly LMQC04, may bind strongly to the studied target and may have appropriate ADME/Tox properties in experimental studies. Considering future in vitro or in vivo assays, we elaborated the theoretical synthetic routes of the promising compounds identified in the present study. Based on our in silico findings, the selected ligands show promise for future studies in developing chronic myeloid leukemia treatments.

Abstract: The Module-0 Demonstrator is a single-phase 600 kg liquid argon time projection chamber operated as a prototype for the DUNE liquid argon near detector. Based on the ArgonCube design concept, Module-0 features a novel 80k-channel pixelated charge readout and advanced high-coverage photon detection system. In this paper, we present an analysis of an eight-day data set consisting of 25 million cosmic ray events collected in the spring of 2021. We use this sample to demonstrate the imaging performance of the charge and light readout systems as well as the signal correlations between the two. We also report argon purity and detector uniformity measurements and provide comparisons to detector simulations.

Abstract: In strongly correlated systems the strength of Coulomb interactions between electrons, relative to their kinetic energy, plays a central role in determining their emergent quantum mechanical phases. We perform resonant x-ray scattering on Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$, a prototypical cuprate superconductor, to probe electronic correlations within the CuO$_2$ plane. We discover a dynamic quasi-circular pattern in the $x$-$y$ scattering plane with a radius that matches the wave vector magnitude of the well-known static charge order. Along with doping- and temperature-dependent measurements, our experiments reveal a picture of charge order competing with superconductivity where short-range domains along $x$ and $y$ can dynamically rotate into any other in-plane direction. This quasi-circular spectrum, a hallmark of Brazovskii-type fluctuations, has immediate consequences to our understanding of rotational and translational symmetry breaking in the cuprates. Abstract: Abstract During a band-gap-tuned semimetal-to-semiconductor transition, Coulomb attraction between electrons and holes can cause spontaneously formed excitons near the zero-band-gap point, or the Lifshitz transition point. This has become an important route to realize bulk excitonic insulators – an insulating ground state distinct from single-particle band insulators. How this route manifests from weak to strong coupling is not clear. In this work, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction (XRD), we investigate the broken symmetry state across the semimetal-to-semiconductor transition in a leading bulk excitonic insulator candidate system Ta2Ni(Se,S)5. A broken symmetry phase is found to be continuously suppressed from the semimetal side to the semiconductor side, contradicting the anticipated maximal excitonic instability around the Lifshitz transition. Bolstered by first-principles and model calculations, we find strong interband electron-phonon coupling to play a crucial role in the enhanced symmetry breaking on the semimetal side of the phase diagram. Our results not only provide insight into the longstanding debate of the nature of intertwined orders in Ta2NiSe5, but also establish a basis for exploring band-gap-tuned structural and electronic instabilities in strongly coupled systems.

Abstract: The La-based '214' cuprates host several symmetry breaking phases including superconductivity, charge and spin order in the form of stripes, and a structural othorhombic-to-tetragonal phase transition. Therefore, these materials are an ideal system to study the effects of uniaxial stress onto the various correlations that pervade the cuprate phase diagram. We report resonant x-ray scattering experiments on $\textrm{La}_{1.475}\textrm{Nd}_{0.4}\textrm{Sr}_{0.125}\textrm{Cu}\textrm{O}_{4}$ (LNSCO-125) that reveal a significant response of charge stripes to uniaxial tensile-stress of $\sim$ 0.1 GPa. These effects include a reduction of the onset temperature of stripes by $\sim$ 50 K, a 29 K reduction of the low-temperature orthorhombic-to-tetragonal transition, competition between charge order and superconductivity, and a preference for stripes to form along the direction of applied stress. Abstract: A central problem in modern condensed matter physics is the understanding of materials with strong electron correlations. Despite extensive work, the essential physics of many of these systems is not understood and there is very little ability to make predictions in this class of materials. In this manuscript we share our personal views on the major open problems in the field of correlated electron systems. We discuss some possible routes to make progress in this rich and fascinating field. This manuscript is the result of the vigorous discussions and deliberations that took place at Johns Hopkins University during a three-day workshop January 27, 28, and 29, 2020 that brought together six senior scientists and 46 more junior scientists. Abstract: Superconductivity and charge density waves (CDW) are competitive, yet coexisting orders in cuprate superconductors. To understand their microscopic interdependence, a probe capable of discerning their interaction on its natural length and time scales is necessary. We use ultrafast resonant soft x-ray scattering to track the transient evolution of CDW correlations in YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6+x}$ following the quench of superconductivity by an infrared laser pulse. We observe a non-thermal response of the CDW order characterized by a near doubling of the correlation length within $\approx$ 1 picosecond of the superconducting quench. Our results are consistent with a model in which the interaction between superconductivity and CDW manifests inhomogeneously through disruption of spatial coherence, with superconductivity playing the dominant role in stabilizing CDW topological defects, such as discommensurations., Comment: Accepted version. 34 pages, 11 figures, Main text and Supplementary Materials

Abstract: Abstract The Pandora Software Development Kit and algorithm libraries provide pattern-recognition logic essential to the reconstruction of particle interactions in liquid argon time projection chamber detectors. Pandora is the primary event reconstruction software used at ProtoDUNE-SP, a prototype for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment far detector. ProtoDUNE-SP, located at CERN, is exposed to a charged-particle test beam. This paper gives an overview of the Pandora reconstruction algorithms and how they have been tailored for use at ProtoDUNE-SP. In complex events with numerous cosmic-ray and beam background particles, the simulated reconstruction and identification efficiency for triggered test-beam particles is above 80% for the majority of particle type and beam momentum combinations. Specifically, simulated 1 GeV/c charged pions and protons are correctly reconstructed and identified with efficiencies of 86.1 $$\pm 0.6$$ ± 0.6 % and 84.1 $$\pm 0.6$$ ± 0.6 %, respectively. The efficiencies measured for test-beam data are shown to be within 5% of those predicted by the simulation.

27. Contribution of miR-124 rs531564 polymorphism to the occurrence of congenital Zika syndrome

Abstract: Zika virus (ZIKV) cause Congenital Zika Syndrome (CZS) in individuals exposed during pregnancy. Studies have shown that ZIKV infection positively regulates the miR-124 expression in neural cells, which leads to a decrease of TFRC, a gene targeted of this miRNA. Both miR-124 and TFRC exhibit a pivotal role in nervous system development. Therefore, in this study we aimed to investigate whether genetic variants that affect the expression of these genes could act together with ZIKV to increase the risk of individuals developing CZS. TFRC rs406271 and MIR-124-1 rs531564 polymorphisms were genotyped, using TaqMan® Genotyping Assays, in a sample of children who were exposed to ZIKV during pregnancy, of whom 40 were born with CZS and 48 without congenital anomalies. We identified that individuals with CZS presented a higher frequency of CG genotype of rs531564 polymorphism in MIR-124-1 (p=0.048), which is associated with increased expression of miR-124. Since ZIKV also upregulates the expression of this miRNA, the presence of CG genotype in individuals exposed to the virus could lead to a scenario of overexpression of miR-124 in the brain. Since teratogenesis is a multifactorial event, this genetic finding could partly explain why such individuals are more susceptible to CZS, considering both the downregulation of important neurodevelopment genes, as well as deregulation of the neurogenesis process. Thus, we provide preliminary evidence about a possible genetic risk factor to CZS and highlight the importance of analyzing functional polymorphisms related to epigenetic modulators of neurodevelopment genes in the context of ZIKV teratogenesis.

28. Effect of gallium and strontium salts on the characteristics and biological applications of Sr and Ga-modified titanate nanotubes

Abstract: In this work, we report the synthesis of Na-TiNTs sodium titanate nanotubes prepared by the hydrothermal method in a highly alkaline subsequently modified by the substitution of Na+ ions present in the walls of the nanotubes by ions of Sr2+ and Ga3+ revealing the presence of phases such as SrOH2 and α-GaOOH through the analysis by X-ray diffraction. Raman spectroscopy showed the characteristic peaks of the vibrational modes of the titanate nanotube structure. UV–Vis analysis revealed a blueshift of absorption edge that leads to an increase in the bandgap with the insertion of Sr and Ga ions. The ion exchange causes a decrease in the Urbach energy, which suggests a certain attenuation in the concentration of structural defects.Through the SEM images it is observed the cluster of interwoven nanotubes it self is characteristic of titanate nanotubes and, the elemental mapping shows the complete efficiency of the reaction process of sodium ion exchange by strontium and gallium in the Sr-TiNT and Ga-TiNT samples respectively, showing the environment of the chemical composition of the surface with the presence of chemical elements such as Sr, Ga. The Na-TiNT, Sr-TiNT, and Ga-TiNT nanotubes did not show direct antibacterial activity against the tested strains. The Na, Ga, and Sr TiNTs of the ampicillin antibiotic exhibited significant values against the microorganism S. aureus 10 compared to the control antibiotic, thereby reducing its inhibitory concentration. The same was observed for gentamicin. The Na-TiNT, in combination with gentamicin, displayed a reduction in inhibitory concentration compared to the control for P. aeruginosa 24. In E. coli 06, the Na, Sr, and Ga TiNTs showed a reduction in concentration when combined with gentamicin, indicating a potential synergistic effect.

Abstract: We report a detailed experimental study of the band structure of the recently discovered topological material $\textrm{Hf}_{2}\textrm{Te}_2\textrm{P}$. Using the combination of scanning tunneling spectroscopy and angle-resolved photo-emission spectroscopy with surface K-doping, we probe the band structure of $\textrm{Hf}_{2}\textrm{Te}_2\textrm{P}$ with energy and momentum resolution above the Fermi level. Our experiments show the presence of multiple surface states with a linear Dirac-like dispersion, consistent with the predictions from previously reported band structure calculations. In particular, scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements provide the first experimental evidence for the strong topological surface state predicted at 460 meV, which stems from the band inversion between Hf-d and Te-p orbitals. Abstract: Charge density wave (CDW) order has been shown to compete and coexist with superconductivity in underdoped cuprates. Theoretical proposals for the CDW order include an unconventional $d$-symmetry form factor CDW, evidence for which has emerged from measurements, including resonant soft x-ray scattering (RSXS) in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ (YBCO). Here, we revisit RSXS measurements of the CDW symmetry in YBCO, using a variation in the measurement geometry to provide enhanced sensitivity to orbital symmetry. We show that the $(0\ 0.31\ L)$ CDW peak measured at the Cu $L$ edge is dominated by an $s$ form factor rather than a $d$ form factor as was reported previously. In addition, by measuring both $(0.31\ 0\ L)$ and $(0\ 0.31\ L)$ peaks, we identify a pronounced difference in the orbital symmetry of the CDW order along the $a$ and $b$ axes, with the CDW along the $a$ axis exhibiting orbital order in addition to charge order., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures + supplementary information

Abstract: Electron interactions are pivotal for defining the electronic structure of quantum materials. In particular, the strong electron Coulomb repulsion is considered the keystone for describing the emergence of exotic and/or ordered phases of quantum matter as disparate as high-temperature superconductivity and charge- or magnetic-order. However, a comprehensive understanding of fundamental electronic properties of quantum materials is often complicated by the appearance of an enigmatic partial suppression of low-energy electronic states, known as the pseudogap. Here we take advantage of ultrafast angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to unveil the temperature evolution of the low-energy density of states in the electron-doped cuprate Nd$_{\text{2-x}}$Ce$_{\text{x}}$CuO$_{\text{4}}$, an emblematic system where the pseudogap intertwines with magnetic degrees of freedom. By photoexciting the electronic system across the pseudogap onset temperature T*, we report the direct relation between the momentum-resolved pseudogap spectral features and the spin-correlation length with an unprecedented sensitivity. This transient approach, corroborated by mean field model calculations, allows us to establish the pseudogap in electron-doped cuprates as a precursor to the incipient antiferromagnetic order even when long-range antiferromagnetic correlations are not established, as in the case of optimal doping., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: Time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy accesses the ultrafast evolution of quasiparticles and many-body interactions in solid-state systems. However, the momentum- and energy-resolved transient photoemission intensity may not be unambiguously related to the intrinsic relaxation dynamics of photoexcited electrons. In fact, interpretation of the time-dependent photoemission signal can be affected by the transient evolution of both the one-electron removal spectral function as well as the photoemission dipole matrix elements. Here we investigate the topological insulator Bi$_{1.1}$Sb$_{0.9}$Te$_2$S to demonstrate, by means of a careful probe-polarization study, the transient contribution of matrix elements to the time-resolved photoemission signal., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: Incommensurate charge order (CO) has been identified as the leading competitor of high-temperature superconductivity in all major families of layered copper oxides, but the perplexing variety of CO states in different cuprates has confounded investigations of its impact on the transport and thermodynamic properties. The three-dimensional (3D) CO observed in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ in high magnetic fields is of particular interest, because quantum transport measurements have revealed detailed information about the corresponding Fermi surface. Here we use resonant X-ray scattering to demonstrate 3D-CO in underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ films grown epitaxially on SrTiO$_3$ in the absence of magnetic fields. The resonance profiles indicate that Cu sites in the charge-reservoir layers participate in the CO state, and thus efficiently transmit CO correlations between adjacent CuO$_2$ bilayer units. The results offer fresh perspectives for experiments elucidating the influence of 3D-CO on the electronic properties of cuprates without the need to apply high magnetic fields.

Abstract: Charge order has now been observed in several cuprate high-temperature superconductors. We report a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiment on the electron-doped cuprate Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_4$ that demonstrates the existence of dynamic correlations at the charge order wave vector. Upon cooling we observe a softening in the electronic response, which has been predicted to occur for a d-wave charge order in electron-doped cuprates. At low temperatures, the energy range of these excitations coincides with that of the dispersive magnetic modes known as paramagnons. Furthermore, measurements where the polarization of the scattered photon is resolved indicate that the dynamic response at the charge order wave vector primarily involves spin-flip excitations. Overall, our findings indicate a coupling between dynamic magnetic and charge-order correlations in the cuprates., Comment: Supplementary information available upon request

Abstract: Abstract Liquid argon time projection chamber detector technology provides high spatial and calorimetric resolutions on the charged particles traversing liquid argon. As a result, the technology has been used in a number of recent neutrino experiments, and is the technology of choice for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). In order to perform high precision measurements of neutrinos in the detector, final state particles need to be effectively identified, and their energy accurately reconstructed. This article proposes an algorithm based on a convolutional neural network to perform the classification of energy deposits and reconstructed particles as track-like or arising from electromagnetic cascades. Results from testing the algorithm on experimental data from ProtoDUNE-SP, a prototype of the DUNE far detector, are presented. The network identifies track- and shower-like particles, as well as Michel electrons, with high efficiency. The performance of the algorithm is consistent between experimental data and simulation.

Abstract: In this work an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was adapted to be used as an environmental tool to collect water samples of sea, estuary, and mangrove for further analysis by gas chromatography with a mass detector (GC-MS). The sampling automated system was based on a microcontroller, a solenoid valve, and a peristaltic mini-pump that was coupled to a quadcopter UAV. The apparatus was properly calibrated to acquire 100 mL of environmental water at 4.6 min. After, the concentration of BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and o, m, p-xylenes) was analyzed in laboratory using GC-MS and the BTEX concentration ranged from 0.3 to 5.0 µg L-1 with a recovery from 83.9 to 118% with a relative standard deviation lower than 7.0%. Tests of cross-contamination were performed by simultaneous sampling and laboratory blank was carried out and no contamination was found for BTEX analysis. Based on the results, the adapted UAV presented a very useful ability to collect samples in difficult access areas such as mangroves, points between rocks, corals reefs, without health risk and without impacting the fragile ecosystem being an interesting tool for environmental purposes.

Abstract: Abstract DUNE is a dual-site experiment for long-baseline neutrino oscillation studies, neutrino astrophysics and nucleon decay searches. ProtoDUNE Dual Phase (DP) is a 6 $$\times $$ × 6 $$\times $$ × 6 m $$^3$$ 3 liquid argon time-projection-chamber (LArTPC) that recorded cosmic-muon data at the CERN Neutrino Platform in 2019–2020 as a prototype of the DUNE Far Detector. Charged particles propagating through the LArTPC produce ionization and scintillation light. The scintillation light signal in these detectors can provide the trigger for non-beam events. In addition, it adds precise timing capabilities and improves the calorimetry measurements. In ProtoDUNE-DP, scintillation and electroluminescence light produced by cosmic muons in the LArTPC is collected by photomultiplier tubes placed up to 7 m away from the ionizing track. In this paper, the ProtoDUNE-DP photon detection system performance is evaluated with a particular focus on the different wavelength shifters, such as PEN and TPB, and the use of Xe-doped LAr, considering its future use in giant LArTPCs. The scintillation light production and propagation processes are analyzed and a comparison of simulation to data is performed, improving understanding of the liquid argon properties.

Abstract: The possibility of driving phase transitions in low-density condensates through the loss of phase coherence alone has far-reaching implications for the study of quantum phases of matter. This has inspired the development of tools to control and explore the collective properties of condensate phases via phase fluctuations. Electrically-gated oxide interfaces, ultracold Fermi atoms, and cuprate superconductors, which are characterized by an intrinsically small phase-stiffness, are paradigmatic examples where these tools are having a dramatic impact. Here we use light pulses shorter than the internal thermalization time to drive and probe the phase fragility of the Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ cuprate superconductor, completely melting the superconducting condensate without affecting the pairing strength. The resulting ultrafast dynamics of phase fluctuations and charge excitations are captured and disentangled by time-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. 50. Ensemble Learning-Based Solutions: An Approach for Evaluating Multiple Features in the Context of H&E Histological Images

Abstract: In this paper, we propose an approach based on ensemble learning to classify histology tissues stained with hematoxylin and eosin. The proposal was applied to representative images of colorectal cancer, oral epithelial dysplasia, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and liver tissues (the classification of gender and age from liver tissue samples). The ensemble learning considered multiple combinations of techniques that are commonly used to develop computer-aided diagnosis methods in medical imaging. The feature extraction was defined with different descriptors, exploring the deep learning and handcrafted methods. The deep-learned features were obtained using five different convolutional neural network architectures. The handcrafted features were representatives of fractal techniques (multidimensional and multiscale approaches), Haralick descriptors, and local binary patterns. A two-stage feature selection process (ranking with metaheuristics) was defined to obtain the main combinations of descriptors and, consequently, techniques. Each combination was tested through a rigorous ensemble process, exploring heterogeneous classifiers, such as Random Forest, Support Vector Machine, K-Nearest Neighbors, Logistic Regression, and Naive Bayes. The ensemble learning presented here provided accuracy rates from 90.72% to 100.00% and offered relevant information about the combinations of techniques in multiple histological images and the main features present in the top-performing solutions, using smaller sets of descriptors (limited to a maximum of 53), which involved each ensemble process and solutions that have not yet been explored. The developed methodology, i.e., making the knowledge of each ensemble learning comprehensible to specialists, complements the main contributions of this study to supporting the development of computer-aided diagnosis systems for histological images.
