Writing is usually integrated in the curriculum of science studies. However, students often lack the skills to write for various audiences or, to produce a well written manuscript. We developed a concise project of 15 European Credits to improve the writing skills in an early phase of the bachelor study. Students worked on texts from various journals and looked at the writing styles. They rewrote texts in a popular and more scientific way and practiced with clear, vivid language, avoiding clutter and hedge words, considering a proper use of grammar and interpunction. Medical writing was also introduced during the project. Grading was based on rewriting for a non-expert and expert audience. A rewritten text was presented to the public in the form of a student-initiated survey. This project shows an inverted approach creating student ownership and enthusiasm for writing. In addition, we created and tested successfully a concise two-day workshop based on this project. Based on the results we herewith present the work as an idea to explore.

The CompSafeNano project, a Research and Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE) project funded under the European Union's Horizon 2020 program, aims to advance the safety and innovation potential of nanomaterials (NMs) by integrating cutting-edge nanoinformatics, computational modelling, and predictive toxicology to enable design of safer NMs at the earliest stage of materials development. The project leverages Safe-by-Design (SbD) principles to ensure the development of inherently safer NMs, enhancing both regulatory compliance and international collaboration. By building on established nanoinformatics frameworks, such as those developed in the H2020-funded projects NanoSolveIT and NanoCommons, CompSafeNano addresses critical challenges in nanosafety through development and integration of innovative methodologies, including advanced in vitro models, in silico approaches including machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI)-driven predictive models and 1st-principles computational modelling of NMs properties, interactions and effects on living systems. Significant progress has been made in generating atomistic and quantum-mechanical descriptors for various NMs, evaluating their interactions with biological systems (from small molecules or metabolites, to proteins, cells, organisms, animals, humans and ecosystems), and in developing predictive models for NMs risk assessment. The CompSafeNano project has also focused on implementing and further standardising data reporting templates and enhancing data management practices, ensuring adherence to the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data principles. Despite challenges, such as limited regulatory acceptance of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) currently, which has implications for predictive nanosafety assessment, CompSafeNano has successfully developed tools and models that are integral to the safety evaluation of NMs, and that enable the extensive datasets on NMs safety to be utilised for the re-design of NMs that are inherently safer, including through prediction of the acquired biomolecule coronas which provide the biological or environmental identities to NMs, promoting their sustainable use in diverse applications. Future efforts will concentrate on further refining these models, expanding the NanoPharos Database, and working with regulatory stakeholders thereby fostering the widespread adoption of SbD practices across the nanotechnology sector. CompSafeNano's integrative approach, multidisciplinary collaboration and extensive stakeholder engagement, position the project as a critical driver of innovation in NMs SbD methodologies and in the development and implementation of computational nanosafety.

Purpose: This study aims to quantify the secondary radiation dose caused by photoneutrons during prostate cancer treatment using an 18 MV medical linear accelerator (LINAC) through Monte Carlo simulations and experimental validation. Methods: Monte Carlo simulations were performed using G4Linac_MT to model the 18 MV photon beam of an Elekta LINAC. The simulation results were validated against experimental measurements. Neutron characteristics, including penetration, cross-section interactions, Linear Energy Transfer (LET), and dose contributions, were analyzed using an adult male ICRP phantom. Prostate treatment scenarios involved 3D-CRT plans with 4-fields, 5-fields, and 7-fields. Specific absorbed fractions (SAFs) in various organs were also evaluated. Results: Simulation and experimental measurements showed strong agreement, with a dose error of approximately 0.74%, and 97% of dose points passed a 2%/2 mm gamma index. Intermediate neutrons constituted 87.05%, while 12.95% were fast neutrons. Neutron dose contributions were 0.63%, 0.33%, and 0.77% for the 3D-CRT 4-field, 5-field, and 7-field plans, respectively. SAF values decreased as neutron energy increased, highlighting reduced neutron interaction efficiency at higher energies. Conclusions: Monte Carlo simulation is a reliable approach for evaluating neutron dose contributions in high-energy X-ray LINACs. Optimization of treatment plans is essential to minimize neutron-induced dose contributions.

Vetiveria zizanioides, known as vetiver grass, is renowned for its ecological significance in soil erosion control and the restoration of lands polluted by heavy metals. Additionally, this plant is extensively harvested for vetiver oil, widely utilized in both medicine and perfumery. The study was designed to investigate the phytochemicals, antilipase, hemoglobin antiglycation, antihyperglycemic, antifungal, and antibacterial properties of V. zizanioides. The GC-MS analysis revealed the presence of various volatile compounds, among which the most predominant ones, which are, 4,6,6-Trimethyl-2-(3-methylbuta-1,3-dienyl) −3-oxatricyclo [5.1.0.0(2,4)] octane, Cycloisolongifolene (8,9-dehydro-), and 9 H-Cycloisolongifolene (8-oxo-). It is noteworthy that this essential oil has shown significant inhibitory activity against α-amylase, α-glucosidase, pancreatic lipase, and glycation, with respective IC50 values of 0.47 ± 0.01, 0.42 ± 0.004, 0.58 ± 0.008, and 0.49 ± 0.005 mg/mL. Additionally, the antimicrobial activity of EoVZ was assessed against a diverse spectrum of Gram+ and Gram- bacteria, as well as fungi, using both disc-diffusion and broth-microdilution techniques. The results showed significant antimicrobial effects against all tested microorganisms, with inhibition zones ranging from 28.33 ± 1.66 mm to 9.0 ± 0.0 mm for bacteria and from 22.5 ± 1.7 mm to 14.0 ± 0.3 mm for fungi. Moreover, minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBC), and minimum fungicidal concentrations (MFC) were determined, with values ranging from 0.0625% to 2.0% (v/v) for bacteria and from 2.0% to 8.0% (v/v) for fungi. The MBC/MIC and MFC/MIC ratios indicated bactericidal and fungicidal mechanisms. This study underscores the prominent attributes of EoVZ, particularly its antimicrobial and antidiabetic properties, suggesting its potential as a natural and effective agent ensuring high safety standards for public health.

Introduction Contemporary medical science has been using fat grafting in aesthetic and reconstructive procedures, consistently achieving successful outcomes. Hansen's disease, caused by Mycobacterium leprae, leads to hand deformities due to peripheral neuropathy, resulting in soft-tissue atrophy, volume loss, and compromised hand function. Tendon transfer surgery is a common remedy for functionality, but it often does not address aesthetic concerns and the patient's psychological impact of living with an atrophic hand. Autologous fat grafting can effectively address these concerns.

The relatively high content of free fatty acids in crude palm oil inhibits the direct synthesis of biodiesel. The use of a bifunctional solid heterogeneous catalyst allows for simultaneous transesterification-esterification reactions and facilitates the purification of the final product from the reaction mixture. This study aimed to synthesize biodiesel from crude palm oil via the use of a Sn-K/metakaolinite catalyst in a simultaneous transesterification-esterification reaction. Biodiesel synthesis was carried out using crude palm oil before and after pretreatment. The optimum conditions were determined by the reaction time (1–5 hours), reactant molar ratio (1:2, 1:4, 1:6, 1:8, 1:10, 1:12), and catalyst concentration (1,3, 5,7 and 9%), and the resulting methyl esters were measured for density, viscosity, and free fatty acids and analyzed via GC‒MS. The results obtained indicate that biodiesel synthesis was successfully carried out with completely converted methyl esters via treated crude palm oil. The optimum conditions for the reaction included a reaction time of 3 hours, a catalyst concentration of 5% and a reactant molar ratio of 1:10. The resulting methyl ester product has a density of 0.86 g/mL, a viscosity of 3.02 cSt and a free fatty acid content of 0.059%. The results of the GC‒MS analysis revealed that the dominant methyl ester components were methyl oleate and methyl palmitate. The synthesis of biodiesel from crude palm oil with a Sn-K/metakaolinite catalyst has been proven to be carried out in simultaneous transesterification-esterification reactions with good catalytic activity.

Improving grain yield (GY) is a major goal of durum wheat breeding programs, and a high yield needs to be attained while preserving grain quality. The current study evaluated the changes caused by a breeding program on the association between GY and grain protein content (PC) in Moroccan durum wheat. Field experiments with six leading varieties released over three decades were conducted for three growing seasons under two water regimes. GY and PC were largely controlled by environmental effects, including both the growing season and water regime. The year of release and growing season effects were the predominant sources of variation in total chlorophyll content (TCC). A significant increase in GY with the year of release was observed under irrigated conditions, whereas a significant increase in PC over time was noted under rainfed conditions. In addition, a negative correlation was revealed between GY and PC, which was significant only in the rainfed trials. Similarly, a significant and positive association was noted between PC and TCC within the rainfed trials, but not in the irrigated trials. Based on GGE (genotype main effect plus genotype ​× ​environment interaction) biplot analysis, the new varieties ‘Marouane’ and ‘Faraj’ were identified as desirable varieties in terms of GY and PC close to the ‘ideal genotype’. These results indicated that when grown under current irrigated conditions, new varieties improved by the Moroccan breeding program showed better GY performance than old varieties.

Background: Diarrhea is the first cause of death for children under five years of age worldwide. In Indonesia, diarrhea cases due to rotavirus infection tend to be detected throughout the year. Purpose: The study was to determine the epidemiology of diarrhea cases due to rotavirus infection of pediatric patients in Dr. Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya based on the variables of person, place, and time. Methods: This type of research uses both descriptive and quantitative methods. The samples used were cases of rotavirus infection in toddlers in Dr. Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya in 2015–2019. Results: From 2015 to 2019, there were about 110 cases (31.98%) of acute diarrhea caused by rotavirus infection at Dr. Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya. The findings revealed that the majority of rotavirus infections (42.73%) occurred in children aged 6-11 months followed 12-23 months (35.45%) and were male (56.36%). The highest cumulative incidence was observed in August 2018 and February 2029, with a value of 1,0. Rotavirus infection was most common among children living in Gubeng sub-District, with 19 cases (17.27%). Conclusion: Epidemiological studies of rotavirus infection by person, place, and time reveal the distribution of disease cases and enable targeted interventions to respond to the disease.

Universal Health Coverage (UHC) aims to provide access to quality health services to all while avoiding financial hardship. Strategies can include establishing a national health insurance scheme (NHIS). However, variations in the progress exist among countries with an NHIS. This study assesses strategies adopted in low- and lower-middle-income countries (LLMICs) with an NHIS to expand UHC. The research entailed a descriptive, qualitative review of the literature on LLMICs that have implemented an NHIS. PRISMA guidelines were used to identify studies and reports. A total of 569 texts were identified from 4 databases. A total of 78 texts were included, spanning 7 countries from Sub-Saharan Africa and 4 from Asia. The search was conducted in March 2023 and updated in April 2024. An analytical framework was used to systematically collect, analyze, and synthesize key features to review healthcare financing mechanisms and coverage dimensions. Countries generate revenue through various public and private means, including taxes, premiums, and out-of-pocket payments. Some have consolidated revenue streams into a single pool for efficiency, while others maintain separate pools. Healthcare services are procured from public and private providers, differing by country. Fee-for-service is the prevalent payment method, but capitation systems have been attempted to control expenses. Population coverage depends on whether enrollment in an NHIS is mandatory or voluntary and on its enforcement. Service provision can be comprehensive and universal or can vary with specific schemes. Mechanisms to avoid financial hardship can involve premium exemptions or subsidies. Progressing toward UHC requires addressing issues of financial sustainability, cost-containment, enrollment expansion, financial protection, and health equity. While policy options are context-specific, this review showcased experiences for other LLMICs committed to UHC with an NHIS. Recommendations on health financing include increasing the allocation of tax revenues to the insurance scheme, merging risk pools, and adopting strategic purchasing.

IntroductionThe northwest Arabian Gulf encounters significant anthropogenic pressures, including nutrient enrichment from coastal development and effluent discharge.MethodsThis study presents the first shotgun metagenomics-based characterization of microbial communities in Kuwaiti waters of the northwest Arabian Gulf, focusing on Kuwait’s first Marine Protected Area (MPA) in Sulaibikhat Bay, a vital nursery ground for commercially important fish.ResultsAnalysis revealed significantly higher microbial diversity within the MPA compared to adjacent waters, with Rhodobacteraceae (27.8%) and Flavobacteriaceae (15.3%) being dominant. Elevated inorganic phosphorus, nitrogen, and salinity were key factors driving this diversity. Multivariate analysis highlighted phosphate as a critical component affecting the MPA microbial community structure, particularly for the families Microbacteriaceae, Flavobacteriaceae, and Rhodobacteraceae.DiscussionThis study underscores the ecological importance of MPAs and highlights the impact of nutrient enrichment and other environmental stressors on microbial diversity, emphasizing the need to reduce nutrient influx to mitigate eutrophication and enhance marine ecosystem resilience in stressed environments.

Abstract The safety of bisphenol A (BPA) due to its adverse effects on the immune system has led to an increasing concern and a significant regulatory shift. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) proposed a reduction in the tolerable daily intake (TDI) of BPA in food in their 2023 scientific opinion, highlighting the need for stricter regulations compared to their previous assessment in 2015. This regulatory action has spurred the production of BPA alternatives, raising concerns about their safety due to insufficient toxicological data. Addressing this gap is crucial for ensuring human and environmental health. In this project, multiple genotoxicity endpoints were applied for testing of two regulatory relevant BPA alternatives, bisphenol E (BPE) and bisphenol P (BPP), in different human models: 2D HepG2 liver cells, 3D liver spheroids and primary human peripheral blood lymphocytes. DNA strand breaks and oxidised base lesions were evaluated by the enzyme‐modified version of the comet assay, while clastogenicity and aneugenicity were analysed by the in vitro micronucleus assay (OECD TG 487, 2016), together with cytotoxicity. Development of new advanced models (NAMs), as 3D spheroids, are essential for next‐generation risk assessment (NGRA) in line with the 3R's to replace, reduce or refine animal experiments. In this aspect, validation and standardisation of NAMs are needed to reach regulatory readiness level and development of OECD Test Guidelines. Therefore, a standardisation and pre‐validation of the advanced 3D liver spheroid model was performed by using multiple genotoxicity endpoints and by comparing the obtained results with standard genotoxicity models.

Smart transportation systems implemented through vehicular ad hoc networks (VANET) offer significant potential to improve safety. However, the network faces critical challenges related to security, as well as inadequate spectrum sensing and management. To address these issues, researchers have utilized cognitive radio and machine learning technologies. Although, previous survey studies have provided a valuable foundation for understanding the use of cognitive radio in VANET, not all have systematically investigated its impact on mitigating spectrum sensing and management issues or the role of machine learning in supporting cognitive radio functionality. Furthermore, the effects of security issues on both VANET and cognitive radio enhanced VANET have not been consistently examined. This survey aims to systematically review the application of cognitive radio and machine learning approaches to address the identified challenges in smart transportation networks, offering valuable research opportunities for future investigations. The paper extensively explores state-of-the-art approaches and focuses on: (1) Assessing the impact of cognitive radio and machine learning on spectrum sensing and management in smart transportation networks and (2) Evaluating the impact of security issues on both VANET and cognitive radio enhanced VANET.

Background: Flash floods can cause significant damage if people perceive them as low risk. Media plays a crucial role in improving risk perception. This study aims to survey the perceptions of residents in Yazd, Iran, about the performance of local TV during the flash flood in 2022. Materials and Methods: This is a qualitative study using a content analysis method that was conducted on 22 residents (14 males and 8 females) who had a history of watching local TV programs during the 2022 flash flood in Yazd City. They were selected by purposive sampling method until data saturation. The data was collected through a semi-structured face-to-face interview using open-ended questions about the news received from local TV regarding the flash flood in the city. Qualitative data analysis was done using Colaizzi’s seven-step method. Results: Data analysis led to the emergence of one main concept (information quality), five themes (time of broadcasting news, content of programs, trust in the media, and ability to increase social sensitivity), 12 sub-themes, and 48 codes. Conclusion: The effectiveness of local TV during the flash flood in Yazd is low due to incorrect weather predictions, insufficient risk emphasis, lack of prime-time broadcasts, generic messaging, and absence of news headlines. Addressing these issues can enhance people’s perceived sensitivity and response to flood warnings from the local TV.

This study aims to assess the diversity of soil macrofauna as an indicator of land health in coffee-based agroforestry systems (Coffea sp.) in Tiwingan Baru Village, Banjar Regency, South Kalimantan Province. Coffee agroforestry is an agricultural system that combines coffee plants with other vegetation to improve environmental and economic sustainability. Soil macrofauna diversity is considered an important indicator of soil health because it plays a role in various ecosystem processes, such as organic matter decomposition and nutrient circulation. This study used a field survey method by collecting soil macrofauna using hand sorting and pitfall traps from coffee agroforestry plots in Tiwingan Baru Village. Analysis of macrofauna diversity was carried out by identifying and counting the types of macrofauna found in each soil sample. The data obtained were analyzed using the Shannon-Wiener diversity index to evaluate the level of diversity of soil macrofauna. The results showed that coffee agroforestry lands in Tiwingan Baru Village had a moderate level of soil macrofauna diversity, with a number of diverse species found, including earthworms, ants, ground beetles, and various other arthropods. The Shannon-Wiener diversity index showed significant values, indicating a diverse and balanced macrofauna community. The conclusion of this study is that soil macrofauna diversity can be used as an indicator of land health in coffee agroforestry systems in Tiwingan Baru Village. High macrofauna diversity reflects good and productive soil conditions, supporting agroforestry practices as a sustainable approach to coffee farming in South Kalimantan. This research is expected to contribute to conservation efforts and sustainable agricultural land management.

This paper introduces Property Valuation Application Domain Extension (ADE) within CityGML 3.0, aiming to integrate relevant indoor and outdoor 3D variables (cost estimation, view quality, etc.) for accurate property valuation. Current models lack the necessary features for this specific application. Leveraging IFC data for indoor elements, this ADE extends CityGML, addressing the existing gap. This paper identifies and categorizes data requirements, leading to the conceptualization and development of the model. By enriching CityGML 3.0 with IFC data, the approach introduces new features like the "Property Unit" to ensure adaptability across diverse valuation scenarios. Despite encountering data integrability challenges, we here commit to refining the model and overcoming these obstacles. A preliminary implementation using CityJSON demonstrates successful integration and paves the way for future implementation. These include developing an API platform and establishing an official repository to facilitate practical usability and scalability. This research significantly contributes to advancing property valuation processes by providing accurate valuations for stakeholders and promoting the use of 3D urban data in domain-specific extensions.

The role and adoption of 3D city models have been changing from a data endpoint to a centralised data source that is used for a variety of different analyses in different sectors. This change has not yet been fully completed and the transition process is still very noticeable at certain places. For example, data required for city-scale analyses are often missing, incorrect, or not stored in a standard way. A subset of these data (E.g. shell volume, shell area & footprint area) can be approximated from lower LoD shapes (LoD2.2 or lower) in the 3D city models. However, these models frequently simplify reality and therefore these approximations are not accurate. This paper proposes computing these data by voxelising Building Information Modelling (BIM) models representing the same buildings as the 3D city model. It is shown that a subset of these approximations (shell volume & footprint area) are more accurate than values computed from lower LoD shapes. Storing these data as attributes of the building models in 3D city models can improve the ease of use and the outcome of city-scale analyses. The computed values from BIM models can also be assigned to outputs of BIM to Geo conversions. This overturns the accuracy loss of the geometry caused by the conversion in which geometry is significantly generalised and simplified.

The integration of geoinformation with Building Information Models (BIM), termed GeoBIM, has garnered significant attention across academic and non-academic sectors due to its potential for analyzing the reciprocal impacts of new designs on their environment. However, achieving integration between 3D city models and BIM necessitates ensuring consistency and alignment between their respective features and specifications. Georeferencing, a fundamental task in GeoBIM, involves establishing a connection between digital models and the Earth’s surface through coordinate transformations. Despite its importance, accurate georeferencing of BIM models has often been overlooked, resulting in challenges for integrating BIM models and geographical data. To address this gap, our study proposes a novel approach to enhance the georeferencing accuracy of BIM models by integrating surveyed points, considering the varying levels of georeferencing precision applicable to Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) models. We explore the potential benefits and challenges associated with this integrated surveyed point methodology, providing insights to improve georeferencing within the GeoBIM framework.

The potential of Building Information Models (BIM) to establish rights and responsibilities for multi-level building complexes in cadastral registrations has been explored in many previous researches. However, the implementation of BIM-based cadastral registrations in practice remains limited due to the complex interplay between technical potentials and legal implications as well as uncertainty about the additional complexity of a BIM model and the extra work that will be required to generate the BIM Legal model. In collaboration with Netherlands Kadaster, we have investigated the data requirements for a BIM Legal model that will support the 3D cadastral registration of apartment complexes and that aligns with BIM creation processes in practice. The BIM Legal model aims to visualise the spatial aspects of apartment complexes and to align the cadastral registration to the 3D data that is generated in the design and construction phase of new buildings. The BIM Legal file will be submitted when an apartment complex is being registered and is based on IFC, the open standard established by BuildingSMART International and used in the BIM domain. To make the implementation of BIM Legal feasible legally, technically, and economically, we apply a 3-phase approach. This paper presents the BIM Legal model as defined in Phase 1, which enables to generate a BIM Legal model compliant with current legislation frameworks with no/minimal manual interaction from BIM models as commonly generated in design processes. The paper describes the 3-phase approach, the context of Phase 1, the data requirement analyses, the defined BIM Legal data model, as well the questions that emerged during the specification process that need to be answered to further improve the implementation of Phase 1 and to further develop BIM Legal for Phases 2 and 3.

Introduction To evaluate the cross-over association of moderate-to-high-intensity interval-training (M-HIIT) and low-frequency pulsed-electromagnetic field therapy (LFPMT) on functional balance (FB) and ankle-brachial index (ABI) in patients with diabetic polyneuropathy (DPN). Methods Twenty-four participants with DPN, age 40–65 years, 0.6 < ABI ≤ 0.9, were randomly allocated into group A (n = 7) and received M-HIIT followed by LFPMT, group B (n = 9) and received LFPMT followed by M-HIIT, or group C ( n = 8) as the control group. Each of the LFPMT (15 Hz, 20 G, for 24 min) and the M-HIIT was provided twice weekly, for 4 weeks. Variables were evaluated pre and after 4 and 8 weeks. Results After 4 weeks, the FB significantly increased [by 9.08% ( p = 0.00) and by 6.82% ( p = 0.00)] and the ABI significantly increased [by 7.84% ( p = 0.01) and 12.57% ( p = 0.03)], while after 8 weeks, the FB significantly increased [by 13.03% ( p = 0.00) and 11.26% ( p = 00)] and the ABI significantly increased [by 10.05% ( p = 0.01) and 13.01% (p = 0.01)] in groups A and B, respectively. Significant differences existed between-groups after 4 weeks in the [FB ( p = 0.00) and ABI ( p = 0.02)], and after 8 weeks [FB ( p = 0.00) and ABI ( p = 0.01)]. Post-hoc comparisons revealed the FB most significantly increased ( p = 0.001) in group A, while the ABI more significantly increased ( p = 0.02) in group B. Conclusions Combined M-HIIT and LFPMT programs were effective in improving FB and ABI. Furthermore, starting the rehabilitation regimen with M-HIIT followed by LFPMT had a superior effect in improving the FB while starting the program with LFPMT followed by M-HIIT was more effective in improving the ABI in patients with DPN.

Background: Bariatric surgery in Saudi Arabia has become one of the most performed surgical procedures for weight loss surgery (WLS). The aim of this survey is to highlight the importance of education and training in bariatric anesthesia (BA). Methods: An Internet-based cross-sectional survey was conducted to examine the percentages of general anesthesiologists among respondents who supported the need for formal structured training in BA as the primary outcome. A 41 items questionnaire on different aspects of BA included in this survey. All anesthesiologists in KSA participated in this survey. Results: 42% responded giving anesthesia for bariatric surgery/year between 25 and 50% of cases/year. 22% responded performing 25–50 cases/month, 21% from 10–25 cases, and 14% from 50–100 cases. Compared with how many elective bariatric surgical procedures performed in your center/month revealed significant differences (P < 0.05), 39% responded with no dedicated team in their center, 14% for 0.05), upon asking on how many trained/skilled anesthesiologists in bariatric anesthesia in your center, 24% reported none, 4% only one, 21% 2–5 anesthesiologists, 12% 5–10 anesthesiologists, and 19% of the respondents reported more than 10 anesthesiologists specialized in BA.
