Eutectics of Sapphire/Yttrium-Aluminum garnet and Ce-doped Sapphire/Yttrium-Aluminum garnet (Ce up to 1 at.%) with a Chinese script microstructure were obtained by the method of horizontal directional crystallization in a carbon-containing reducing atmosphere based on argon gas. The effects of the pooling rate and Ce-dopant concentration on the microstructure of the eutectic were studied by the modified chord method. The deviation of the dependence of the characteristic eutectic distance on the pooling rate from the Jackson-Hunt model has been established. A change in the pathway for restructuring the structure of the doped eutectic at a certain critical pooling rate was revealed, which may indicate that the development of morphological instability of the crystallization front is carried out as a two-stage process. The conditions for obtaining doped eutectic of high homogeneity have been established. It was shown that increasing cerium ion concentration causes an increase in the structure parameters and its value deviation. Intensive formation of the third phase occurred when the limit of cerium ion concentration was exceeded., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

Relativistic pair beams produced in the intergalactic medium (IGM) by TeV gamma rays from blazars are expected to generate a detectable GeV-scale electromagnetic cascade, yet this cascade is absent in the observed spectra of hard-spectrum TeV emitting blazars. This suppression is often attributed to weak intergalactic magnetic fields (IGMF) deflecting electron-positron pairs out of the line of sight. Alternatively, it has been proposed that beam-plasma instabilities could drain the energy of the beam before they produce the secondary cascades. Recent studies suggest that the modification of beam distribution due to these instabilities is primarily driven by particle scattering, rather than energy loss. In this paper, we quantitatively assess, for the blazar 1ES 0229+200, the arrival time of secondary gamma rays at Earth from the beam scattering by the electrostatic instability. We first computed the production rates of electron-positron pairs at various distances using the Monte Carlo simulation CRPropa. We then simulated the feedback of the plasma instability on the beam, incorporating production rates and inverse-Compton cooling, to determine the steady-state distribution function. Our findings reveal that the time delay of the GeV secondary cascade arrival due to instability broadening is on the order of a few months. This delay is insufficient to account for the missing cascade emission in blazar spectra, suggesting that plasma instabilities do not significantly affect IGMF constraints., Comment: Accepted to The Astrophysical Journal. 8 pages, 4 figures

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
We study a flaring activity of the HSP Mrk421 that was characterized from radio to very-high-energy (VHE; E $>0.1$TeV) gamma rays with MAGIC, Fermi-LAT, Swift, XMM-Newton and several optical and radio telescopes. These observations included, for the first time for a gamma-ray flare of a blazar, simultaneous X-ray polarization measurements with IXPE. We find substantial variability in both X-rays and VHE gamma rays throughout the campaign, with the highest VHE flux above 0.2 TeV occurring during the IXPE observing window, and exceeding twice the flux of the Crab Nebula. However, the VHE and X-ray spectra are on average softer, and the correlation between these two bands weaker that those reported in previous flares of Mrk421. IXPE reveals an X-ray polarization degree significantly higher than that at radio and optical frequencies. The X-ray polarization angle varies by $\sim$100$^\circ$ on timescales of days, and the polarization degree changes by more than a factor 4. The highest X-ray polarization degree reaches 26%, around which a X-ray counter-clockwise hysteresis loop is measured with XMM-Newton. It suggests that the X-ray emission comes from particles close to the high-energy cutoff, hence possibly probing an extreme case of the Turbulent Extreme Multi-Zone model. We model the broadband emission with a simplified stratified jet model throughout the flare. The polarization measurements imply an electron distribution in the X-ray emitting region with a very high minimum Lorentz factor, which is expected in electron-ion plasma, as well as a variation of the emitting region size up to a factor of three during the flaring activity. We find no correlation between the fluxes and the evolution of the model parameters, which indicates a stochastic nature of the underlying physical mechanism. Such behaviour would be expected in a highly turbulent electron-ion plasma crossing a shock front., Comment: Submitted to Astronomy and Astrophysics. Imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) are used to observe very high-energy photons from the ground. Gamma rays are indirectly detected through the Cherenkov light emitted by the air showers they induce. The new generation of experiments, in particular the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO), sets ambitious goals for discoveries of new gamma-ray sources and precise measurements of the already discovered ones. To achieve these goals, both hardware and data analysis must employ cutting-edge techniques. This also applies to the LST-1, the first IACT built for the CTAO, which is currently taking data on the Canary island of La Palma. This paper introduces a new event reconstruction technique for IACT data, aiming to improve the image reconstruction quality and the discrimination between the signal and the background from misidentified hadrons and electrons. The technique models the development of the extensive air shower signal, recorded as a waveform per pixel, seen by CTAO telescopes' cameras. Model parameters are subsequently passed to random forest regressors and classifiers to extract information on the primary particle. The new reconstruction was applied to simulated data and to data from observations of the Crab Nebula performed by the LST-1. The event reconstruction method presented here shows promising performance improvements. The angular and energy resolution, and the sensitivity, are improved by 10 to 20% over most of the energy range. At low energy, improvements reach up to 22%, 47%, and 50%, respectively. A future extension of the method to stereoscopic analysis for telescope arrays will be the next important step., Comment: Accepted in A&A

Astrophysics - Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics ,Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
Instruments for gamma-ray astronomy at Very High Energies ($E>100\,{\rm GeV}$) have traditionally derived their scientific results through proprietary data and software. Data standardisation has become a prominent issue in this field both as a requirement for the dissemination of data from the next generation of gamma-ray observatories and as an effective solution to realise public data legacies of current-generation instruments. Specifications for a standardised gamma-ray data format have been proposed as a community effort and have already been successfully adopted by several instruments. We present the first production of standardised data from the Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) telescopes. We converted $166\,{\rm h}$ of observations from different sources and validated their analysis with the open-source software Gammapy. We consider six data sets representing different scientific and technical analysis cases and compare the results obtained analysing the standardised data with open-source software against those produced with the MAGIC proprietary data and software. Aiming at a systematic production of MAGIC data in this standardised format, we also present the implementation of a database-driven pipeline automatically performing the MAGIC data reduction from the calibrated down to the standardised data level. In all the cases selected for the validation, we obtain results compatible with the MAGIC proprietary software, both for the manual and for the automatic data productions. Part of the validation data set is also made publicly available, thus representing the first large public release of MAGIC data. This effort and this first data release represent a technical milestone toward the realisation of a public MAGIC data legacy., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Journal of High Energy Astrophysics

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
Context: There are currently three pulsars firmly detected by imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs), two of them reaching TeV energies, challenging models of very-high-energy (VHE) emission in pulsars. More precise observations are needed to better characterize pulsar emission at these energies. The LST-1 is the prototype of the Large-Sized Telescope, that will be part of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO). Its improved performance over previous IACTs makes it well suited for studying pulsars. Aims: To study the Crab pulsar emission with the LST-1, improving and complementing the results from other telescopes. These observations can also be used to characterize the potential of the LST-1 to study other pulsars and detect new ones. Methods: We analyzed a total of $\sim$103 hours of gamma-ray observations of the Crab pulsar conducted with the LST-1 in the period from September 2020 to January 2023. The observations were carried out at zenith angles less than 50 degrees. A new analysis of the Fermi-LAT data was also performed, including $\sim$14 years of observations. Results: The Crab pulsar phaseogram, long-term light-curve, and phase-resolved spectra are reconstructed with the LST-1 from 20 GeV to 450 GeV for P1 and up to 700 GeV for P2. The pulsed emission is detected with a significance of 15.2$\sigma$. The two characteristic emission peaks of the Crab pulsar are clearly detected (>10$\sigma$), as well as the so-called bridge emission (5.7$\sigma$). We find that both peaks are well described by power laws, with spectral indices of $\sim$3.44 and $\sim$3.03 respectively. The joint analysis of Fermi-LAT and LST-1 data shows a good agreement between both instruments in the overlapping energy range. The detailed results obtained in the first observations of the Crab pulsar with LST-1 show the potential that CTAO will have to study this type of sources., Comment: Accepted by A&A

Condensed Matter - Superconductivity - Abstract
In this study, a method for fabrication of superconducting microstructures that are partially or completely isolated from the substrate has been proposed. Two configurations of suspended microbridges have been suggested, i. e., the first structure that features a T-shaped etching of the substrate and the second structure which is completely separated from the substrate through periodically positioned supports. The creation of suspended structures is based on the principle of gas-phase etching of amorphous silicon oxide in a mixture of hydrogen fluoride (HF) and ethanol gases. In the course of the experiments, it has been discovered that suspending micro-structures in the configuration of a micro-bridge results in a slight reduction in superconducting characteristics, ranging from 10 to 15% of the initial parameters. It has also been demonstrated that the thermal coupling between the film and the substrate significantly affects the dissipation of thermal energy. The power dissipated into the substrate at room temperature can vary by up to 250 times based on the value of the micro-bridge undercutting.

The aim of this work was evaluation of binding affinity of thiamine to malate dehydrogenase isoforms. The methods of affinity chromatography, SDS PAGE electrophoresis, and MALDI-TOF mass spectroscopy, as well as molecular modeling in silico were used in the study. Affinity sorbent (T-AS) contained C2-conjugated thiamine fragment as an anchor which was bound to activated Sepharose 4B via a spacer composed of N-4-azobenzoylcaproic acid hydrazide. A commercial preparation of MDH from the porcine heart was chosen for the experimental study. Analysis of the protein content in fractions performed by the Bradford method showed that three separate protein peaks with malate dehydrogenase activity were obtained after elution with a thiamine solution. The results of one-dimensional electrophoresis of the initial MDH preparation and pooled fraction of proteins which were eluted from the affinity sorbent with a thiamine solution demonstrated that almost all protein fractions detected in the commercial MDH preparation were also present in eluates obtained by T-AS affinity chromatography. Four isoforms of MDH, including cytoplasmic malate dehydrogenase (MDH1), mitochondrial malate dehydrogenase (MDH2) and its isoform, and malate dehydrogenase 1B (MDH1B) were specifically bound to the affinity sorbent. According to the molecular docking results, the most preferred for both monomeric and homodimeric MDH1 and MDH2 could be ligand position at the NAD (NADH) binding site. Additional binding site could be located between two subunits of the homodimeric form of enzyme. Our results confirm the previously obtained data and expand an idea of ability of MDH isoforms to interact with the thiamine molecule in vivo. These data can also be useful for identification of thiamine binding protein (ThBP) which was previously isolated from rat brain, taking into account the possible partial homology of this protein with proteins that show MDH activity.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a widespread pathology of the musculoskeletal system. OA may associate with a wide range of disorders, that lead to the development of various strategies on how to prevent and treat the disease. Recent studies discussed interactions between the microbiome and a wide range of pathologies, including OA. In this study, we investigated the effect of probiotic cultures on oxidative/antioxidant balance in blood of rats during OA. Experimental OA was induced by a single injection of sodium monoiodoacetate into the knee joint. A probiotic composition (Multiprobiotic Simbiter®) was administered by peroral catheter once per day for 14 days. We investigated the next parameters: expression of Nos2 gene in the blood, superoxide dismutase activity, catalase activity, glutathione peroxidase activity, glutathione transferase activity, glutathione reductase activity, contents of superoxide, hydrogen peroxide, TBA-reactive compounds, oxidized and reduced glutathione in the serum of the blood. Monoiodoacetate-induced OA caused significant changes on oxidative/antioxidant balance in the blood of rats: increasing of the contents of superoxide anion radical, hydrogen peroxide, thiobarbituric acid-reactive compounds, oxidized glutathione, upregulating of Nos2 expression, increasing of catalase activity; conversely, superoxide dismutase activity, glutathione peroxidize activity, glutathione transferase activity, glutathione reductase activity, the content of reduced glutathione were significantly decreased, compared to control group. Administration of probiotics to animals with OA led to positive changes in the studied parameters approaching the values of control group (some of them were statistically significant).

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena ,High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
The Lorentz Invariance Violation (LIV), a proposed consequence of certain quantum gravity (QG) scenarios, could instigate an energy-dependent group velocity for ultra-relativistic particles. This energy dependence, although suppressed by the massive QG energy scale $E_\mathrm{QG}$, expected to be on the level of the Planck energy $1.22 \times 10^{19}$ GeV, is potentially detectable in astrophysical observations. In this scenario, the cosmological distances traversed by photons act as an amplifier for this effect. By leveraging the observation of a remarkable flare from the blazar Mrk\,421, recorded at energies above 100 GeV by the MAGIC telescopes on the night of April 25 to 26, 2014, we look for time delays scaling linearly and quadratically with the photon energies. Using for the first time in LIV studies a binned-likelihood approach we set constraints on the QG energy scale. For the linear scenario, we set $95\%$ lower limits $E_\mathrm{QG}>2.7\times10^{17}$ GeV for the subluminal case and $E_\mathrm{QG}> 3.6 \times10^{17}$ GeV for the superluminal case. For the quadratic scenario, the $95\%$ lower limits for the subluminal and superluminal cases are $E_\mathrm{QG}>2.6 \times10^{10}$ GeV and $E_\mathrm{QG}>2.5\times10^{10}$ GeV, respectively.

Condensed Matter - Superconductivity - Abstract
The present study delves into exploring the impact of a thin protective layer of scandium nitride (ScN) on the superconductive properties of thin films of niobium nitride (NbN) generated through reactive magnetron deposition. This is the first time such an investigation has been carried out. The article offers a comprehensive investigation of the morphological, microstructural, and electrophysical features of thin films that have undergone high-temperature annealing in an oxygen-rich environment. The dependence of the critical transition temperature of the NbN thin film on the annealing temperature of the samples in an oxygen medium, with and without ScN coating, was determined. According to X-ray reflectometry studies, it has been observed that the ScN film serves as a protective layer, even when exposed to annealing temperatures of approximately 450{\deg}C, without significantly affecting the NbN layer density or thickness. It has been shown that adding a ScN coating to a thin NbN film increases its resistance to corrosive media compared to a film without the coating.

Astrophysics - Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics - Abstract
We use Faraday rotation measurements from the latest catalog LoTSS DR2 from LOFAR to probe intergalactic magnetic fields. To identify the extragalactic component of the observed rotation measure (RM) we use two different techniques: residual rotation measure (RRM) and close radio pairs. For the RRM approach, we conclude that, despite smaller measurement errors in the LOFAR data, robust and conservative treatment of the systematic uncertainties in the Galactic contribution to RM results in the constraint on a homogeneous volume-filling magnetic field at the level 2.4 nG, slightly weaker than previous constraints from NVSS data, and does not allow to probe the presence of over-magnetized bubbles predicted by the AGN feedback model of the IllustrisTNG. Analyzing close radio pairs we found that in only 0.5% of our mock realizations of observed data, the expected contribution from the over-magnetized bubbles does not exceed LoTSS DR2 data., Comment: 21 pages, 15 figures

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena ,Astrophysics - Astrophysics of Galaxies - Abstract
The nearby elliptical galaxy M87 contains one of the only two supermassive black holes whose emission surrounding the event horizon has been imaged by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). In 2018, more than two dozen multi-wavelength (MWL) facilities (from radio to gamma-ray energies) took part in the second M87 EHT campaign. The goal of this extensive MWL campaign was to better understand the physics of the accreting black hole M87*, the relationship between the inflow and inner jets, and the high-energy particle acceleration. Understanding the complex astrophysics is also a necessary first step towards performing further tests of general relativity. The MWL campaign took place in April 2018, overlapping with the EHT M87* observations. We present a new, contemporaneous spectral energy distribution (SED) ranging from radio to very high energy (VHE) gamma-rays, as well as details of the individual observations and light curves. We also conduct phenomenological modelling to investigate the basic source properties. We present the first VHE gamma-ray flare from M87 detected since 2010. The flux above 350 GeV has more than doubled within a period of about 36 hours. We find that the X-ray flux is enhanced by about a factor of two compared to 2017, while the radio and millimetre core fluxes are consistent between 2017 and 2018. We detect evidence for a monotonically increasing jet position angle that corresponds to variations in the bright spot of the EHT image. Our results show the value of continued MWL monitoring together with precision imaging for addressing the origins of high-energy particle acceleration. While we cannot currently pinpoint the precise location where such acceleration takes place, the new VHE gamma-ray flare already presents a challenge to simple one-zone leptonic emission model approaches, and emphasises the need for combined image and spectral modelling., Comment: 46 pages, 23 figures, accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysics on August. 29, 2024

Quantum Physics - Abstract
The cost of classical simulations of quantum many-body dynamics is often determined by the amount of entanglement in the system. In this paper, we study entanglement in stochastic quantum trajectory approaches that solve master equations describing open quantum system dynamics. First, we introduce and compare adaptive trajectory unravelings of master equations. Specifically, building on Ref. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 243601 (2022)], we study several greedy algorithms that generate trajectories with a low average entanglement entropy. Second, we consider various conventional unravelings of a one-dimensional open random Brownian circuit and locate the transition points from area- to volume-law-entangled trajectories. Third, we compare various trajectory unravelings using matrix product states with a direct integration of the master equation using matrix product operators. We provide concrete examples of dynamics, for which the simulation cost of stochastic trajectories is exponentially smaller than the one of matrix product operators.

The usual way of testing probability forecasts in game-theoretic probability is via construction of test martingales. The standard assumption is that all forecasts are output by the same forecaster. In this paper I will discuss possible extensions of this picture to testing probability forecasts output by several forecasters. This corresponds to multiple hypothesis testing in statistics. One interesting phenomenon is that even a slight relaxation of the requirement of family-wise validity leads to a very significant increase in the efficiency of testing procedures. The main goal of this paper is to report results of preliminary simulation studies and list some directions of further research., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures

Monochromatic gamma-ray signals constitute a potential smoking gun signature for annihilating or decaying dark matter particles that could relatively easily be distinguished from astrophysical or instrumental backgrounds. We provide an updated assessment of the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to such signals, based on observations of the Galactic centre region as well as of selected dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We find that current limits and detection prospects for dark matter masses above 300 GeV will be significantly improved, by up to an order of magnitude in the multi-TeV range. This demonstrates that CTA will set a new standard for gamma-ray astronomy also in this respect, as the world's largest and most sensitive high-energy gamma-ray observatory, in particular due to its exquisite energy resolution at TeV energies and the adopted observational strategy focussing on regions with large dark matter densities. Throughout our analysis, we use up-to-date instrument response functions, and we thoroughly model the effect of instrumental systematic uncertainties in our statistical treatment. We further present results for other potential signatures with sharp spectral features, e.g.~box-shaped spectra, that would likewise very clearly point to a particle dark matter origin., Comment: 44 pages JCAP style (excluding author list and references), 19 figures; minor changes to match published version

This paper places conformal testing in a general framework of statistical hypothesis testing. A standard approach to testing a composite null hypothesis $H$ is to test each of its elements and to reject $H$ when each of its elements is rejected. It turns out that we can fully cover conformal testing using this approach only if we allow forgetting some of the data. However, we will see that the standard approach covers conformal testing in a weak asymptotic sense and under restrictive assumptions. I will also list several possible directions of further research, including developing a general scheme of online testing., Comment: 22 pages, 1 figure

A very simple example demonstrates that Fisher's application of the conditionality principle to regression ("fixed $x$ regression"), endorsed by Sprott and many other followers, makes prediction impossible in the context of statistical learning theory. On the other hand, relaxing the requirement of conditionality makes it possible via, e.g., conformal prediction., Comment: 6 pages

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena ,High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
Axion-like particles (ALPs) are pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons that emerge in various theories beyond the standard model. These particles can interact with high-energy photons in external magnetic fields, influencing the observed gamma-ray spectrum. This study analyzes 41.3 hrs of observational data from the Perseus Galaxy Cluster collected with the MAGIC telescopes. We focused on the spectra the radio galaxy in the center of the cluster: NGC 1275. By modeling the magnetic field surrounding this target, we searched for spectral indications of ALP presence. Despite finding no statistical evidence of ALP signatures, we were able to exclude ALP models in the sub-micro electronvolt range. Our analysis improved upon previous work by calculating the full likelihood and statistical coverage for all considered models across the parameter space. Consequently, we achieved the most stringent limits to date for ALP masses around 50 neV, with cross sections down to $g_{a\gamma} = 3 \times 10^{-12}$ GeV$^{-1}$., Comment: 25 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Physics of the Dark Universe

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
We perform the first broadband study of Mrk421 from radio to TeV gamma rays with simultaneous measurements of the X-ray polarization from IXPE. The data were collected within an extensive multiwavelength campaign organized between May and June 2022 using MAGIC, Fermi-LAT, NuSTAR, XMM-Newton, Swift, and several optical and radio telescopes to complement IXPE. During the IXPE exposures, the measured 0.2-1 TeV flux is close to the quiescent state and ranges from 25% to 50% of the Crab Nebula without intra-night variability. Throughout the campaign, the VHE and X-ray emission are positively correlated at a $4\sigma$ significance level. The IXPE measurements unveil a X-ray polarization degree that is a factor of 2-5 higher than in the optical/radio bands; that implies an energy-stratified jet in which the VHE photons are emitted co-spatially with the X-rays, in the vicinity of a shock front. The June 2022 observations exhibit a rotation of the X-ray polarization angle. Despite no simultaneous VHE coverage being available during a large fraction of the swing, the Swift-XRT monitoring unveils an X-ray flux increase with a clear spectral hardening. It suggests that flares in high synchrotron peaked blazars can be accompanied by a polarization angle rotation, as observed in some flat spectrum radio quasars. Finally, during the polarization angle rotation, NuSTAR data reveal two contiguous spectral hysteresis loops in opposite directions (clockwise and counter-clockwise), implying important changes in the particle acceleration efficiency on $\sim$hour timescales., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. 29 pages, 22 figures. This paper establishes the asymptotic uniqueness of long-term probability forecasts in the following form. Consider two forecasters who repeatedly issue probability forecasts for the infinite future. The main result of the paper says that either at least one of the two forecasters will be discredited or their forecasts will converge in total variation. This can be regarded as a game-theoretic version of the classical Blackwell-Dubins result getting rid of some of its limitations. This result is further strengthened along the lines of Richard Jeffrey's radical probabilism., Comment: 15 pages

Query-by-Humming (QbH) is a task that involves finding the most relevant song based on a hummed or sung fragment. Despite recent successful commercial solutions, implementing QbH systems remains challenging due to the lack of high-quality datasets for training machine learning models. In this paper, we propose a deep learning data collection technique and introduce Covers and Hummings Aligned Dataset (CHAD), a novel dataset that contains 18 hours of short music fragments, paired with time-aligned hummed versions. To expand our dataset, we employ a semi-supervised model training pipeline that leverages the QbH task as a specialized case of cover song identification (CSI) task. Starting with a model trained on the initial dataset, we iteratively collect groups of fragments of cover versions of the same song and retrain the model on the extended data. Using this pipeline, we collect over 308 hours of additional music fragments, paired with time-aligned cover versions. The final model is successfully applied to the QbH task and achieves competitive results on benchmark datasets. Our study shows that the proposed dataset and training pipeline can effectively facilitate the implementation of QbH systems.

Beginning in the 1970s, Alexander Philip Dawid has been a leading contributor to the foundations of statistics and especially to the development and application of Bayesian statistics. He is also known for his work on causality, especially his notation for conditional independence and his critique of the overuse of counterfactuals, and for his contributions to forensic statistics. Dawid was born in Lancashire, England, on February 1, 1946. His family moved to London soon afterwards, and he attended the City of London School from 1956 to 1963. He studied mathematics at Cambridge, earning a BA (Bachelor of Arts) degree in 1966. After earning a Diploma in Mathematical Statistics in the academic year 1966-1967, he studied for a PhD at Imperial, then at UCL, where he became a Lecturer in Statistics in 1969. In 1978, he left UCL for a position as Professor of Statistics in the Department of Mathematics, The City University, London, where he served as Head of Statistics Section and Director of the Statistical Laboratory. He returned to the Department of Statistics at UCL in 1981, serving as Head of Department from 1983 to 1993. He moved to the University of Cambridge in 2007, becoming Professor of Statistics and Fellow of Darwin College. He has continued his work in mathematical statistics after retiring from Cambridge in 2013 and was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 2018., Comment: 46 pages, 4 figures; short version is to appear in "Statistical Science"

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
The detection of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (GW170817), along with the discovery of the electromagnetic counterparts of this gravitational wave event, ushered in a new era of multimessenger astronomy, providing the first direct evidence that BNS mergers are progenitors of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Such events may also produce very-high-energy (VHE, > 100GeV) photons which have yet to be detected in coincidence with a gravitational wave signal. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a next-generation VHE observatory which aims to be indispensable in this search, with an unparalleled sensitivity and ability to slew anywhere on the sky within a few tens of seconds. New observing modes and follow-up strategies are being developed for CTA to rapidly cover localization areas of gravitational wave events that are typically larger than the CTA field of view. This work will evaluate and provide estimations on the expected number of of gravitational wave events that will be observable with CTA, considering both on- and off-axis emission. In addition, we will present and discuss the prospects of potential follow-up strategies with CTA., Comment: Presented at the 38th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC 2023), 2023 (arXiv:2309.08219)

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are explosive transient events occurring at cosmological distances, releasing a large amount of energy as electromagnetic radiation over several energy bands. We report the detection of the long GRB~201216C by the MAGIC telescopes. The source is located at $z=1.1$ and thus it is the farthest one detected at very high energies. The emission above \SI{70}{\GeV} of GRB~201216C is modelled together with multi-wavelength data within a synchrotron and synchrotron-self Compton (SSC) scenario. We find that SSC can explain the broadband data well from the optical to the very-high-energy band. For the late-time radio data, a different component is needed to account for the observed emission. Differently from previous GRBs detected in the very-high-energy range, the model for GRB~201216C strongly favors a wind-like medium. The model parameters have values similar to those found in past studies of the afterglows of GRBs detected up to GeV energies., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables. Aims. LST-1, the prototype of the Large-Sized Telescope for the upcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory, is concluding its commissioning in Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos on the island of La Palma. The proximity of LST-1 (Large-Sized Telescope 1) to the two MAGIC (Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov) telescopes permits observations of the same gamma-ray events with both systems. Methods. We describe the joint LST-1+MAGIC analysis pipeline and use simultaneous Crab Nebula observations and Monte Carlo simulations to assess the performance of the three-telescope system. The addition of the LST-1 telescope allows the recovery of events in which one of the MAGIC images is too dim to survive analysis quality cuts. Results. Thanks to the resulting increase in the collection area and stronger background rejection, we find a significant improvement in sensitivity, allowing the detection of 30% weaker fluxes in the energy range between 200 GeV and 3 TeV. The spectrum of the Crab Nebula, reconstructed in the energy range ~60 GeV to ~10 TeV, is in agreement with previous measurements., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Snakebites and their consequences are a growing concern around the globe. The mixture of enzymes, present in snake venom is a great challenge for a snakebite victim’s body. European adder (Vipera berus) is considered as not very harmful snake due to the mild clinical symptoms of envenomation and rare cases of cardiovascular or pulmonary failure. Nevertheless, at the molecular level, many details of V. berus bite (including proteostasis instability) remain unclear. This work was aimed to determine the effect of Eastern Europe typical adder species Vipera berus berus and Vipera berus nikolskii envenomation on the protein homeostasis of rat’s lung tissue. The decrease in total protein concentration, significant redistribution of main protein fractions (including proteolytically active), rise in middle-mass molecules and low molecular weight peptide concentration have been observed during V. b. berus and V. b. nikolskii envenomation, strongly indicating the proteostasis collapse and endogenous intoxication in lung tissue as an effect of European adder snakebite. Moreover, according to the results of experiments, the effect of V. b. nikolskii venom is more harmful to lung tissue protein homeostasis, comparing to V. b. berus, suggesting that the former may represent a greater danger to people. The results of this study may find applications in antivenom development and could be taken into consideration for proper snakebite treatment selection in order to avoid proteome complications in patients.

Galaxy clusters are expected to be dark matter (DM) reservoirs and storage rooms for the cosmic-ray protons (CRp) that accumulate along the cluster's formation history. Accordingly, they are excellent targets to search for signals of DM annihilation and decay at gamma-ray energies and are predicted to be sources of large-scale gamma-ray emission due to hadronic interactions in the intracluster medium. We estimate the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to detect diffuse gamma-ray emission from the Perseus galaxy cluster. We perform a detailed spatial and spectral modelling of the expected signal for the DM and the CRp components. For each, we compute the expected CTA sensitivity. The observing strategy of Perseus is also discussed. In the absence of a diffuse signal (non-detection), CTA should constrain the CRp to thermal energy ratio within the radius $R_{500}$ down to about $X_{500}<3\times 10^{-3}$, for a spatial CRp distribution that follows the thermal gas and a CRp spectral index $\alpha_{\rm CRp}=2.3$. Under the optimistic assumption of a pure hadronic origin of the Perseus radio mini-halo and depending on the assumed magnetic field profile, CTA should measure $\alpha_{\rm CRp}$ down to about $\Delta\alpha_{\rm CRp}\simeq 0.1$ and the CRp spatial distribution with 10% precision. Regarding DM, CTA should improve the current ground-based gamma-ray DM limits from clusters observations on the velocity-averaged annihilation cross-section by a factor of up to $\sim 5$, depending on the modelling of DM halo substructure. In the case of decay of DM particles, CTA will explore a new region of the parameter space, reaching models with $\tau_{\chi}>10^{27}$s for DM masses above 1 TeV. These constraints will provide unprecedented sensitivity to the physics of both CRp acceleration and transport at cluster scale and to TeV DM particle models, especially in the decay scenario., Comment: 93 pages (including author list, appendix and references), 143 figures. In this paper I discuss both syntax and semantics of subjective probability. The semantics determines ways of testing probability statements. Among important varieties of subjective probabilities are intersubjective probabilities and impersonal probabilities, and I will argue that well-tested impersonal probabilities acquire features of objective probabilities. Jeffreys's law, my next topic, states that two successful probability forecasters must issue forecasts that are close to each other, thus supporting the idea of objective probabilities. Finally, I will discuss connections between subjective and frequentist probability., Comment: 19 pages

It is well known that a Bayesian probability forecast for all future observations should be a probability measure in order to satisfy a natural condition of coherence. The main topics of this paper are the evolution of the Bayesian probability measure and ways of testing its adequacy as it evolves over time. The process of testing evolving Bayesian beliefs is modelled in terms of betting, similarly to the standard Dutch book treatment of coherence. The resulting picture is adapted to forecasting several steps ahead and making almost optimal decisions., Comment: 44 pages; old results improved, new results and discussions added

A preparatively convenient method is proposed for the synthesis of new 1-oxo-3,4-dihydro-1H-pyrrolo[2,1-с][1,4]oxazine-8- 4a-e and 4-oxo-4H-pyrrolo[2,1-c][1,4]benzoxazine-3-carboxylic acids 5a-f that is based on the interaction of methyl (2-oxomorpholin-3-ylidene)ethanoates 1a-e and methyl (2-oxo-2H-1,4-benzoxazine-3(4H)-ylidene)ethanoates 2a-f with 2-bromo-1,1-diethoxyethane. Obtained acids were transformed into the corresponding tert-butyl carbamates 6a-e, 7a-f and N-alkyl(aryl)carboxamides 11a-i, 12a-d. By treating tert-butyl carbamates 6a-e, 7a-f with hydrogen chloride, 8-amino-3,4-dihydro-1H-pyrrolo[2,1-c][1,4]oxazin-1-ones 8a-e and 3-amino-4H-pyrrolo[2,1-c][1,4]benzoxazin-4-ones 9a-f were obtained. By acylation of amines 8a-e, 9a-f with acetic anhydride, benzoyl chloride, methanesulfonyl chloride, and p-toluenesulfonyl chloride, corresponding N-acetamides 13a,b, 14, N-benzamides 15, 16, N-methanesulfonamides 17, 18, and N-p-toluenesulfonamides 19, 20 were synthesized. In total, 30 new derivatives of 1-oxo-3,4-dihydro-1H-pyrrolo[2,1-c][1,4]oxazinones and 27 new 4-oxo-4H-pyrrolo[2,1-c][1,4]benzoxazinones were obtained.

A number of 3-aryl-5,6-dihydroimidazo[2,1-b][1,3]thiazoles were synthesized by cyclocondensation of imidazolidine-2-thione with phenacyl bromides, and their antimicrobial and antioxidant activity was evaluated. Bioscreening confirmed the moderate antibacterial activity against the reference strains of bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Proteus vulgaris and excellent antifungal activity against Candida albicans. It was found that 3-(4-chlorophenyl)-5,6-dihydroimidazo[2,1-b]thiazole 4h (MIC = 15.625 μg/ml) has twice the antifungal effect compared to the control drug Furacilin. The study of the antioxidant activity of the synthesized compounds proved their ability to inhibit 60–97% of DPPH radicals. The best antiradical effect was found for 4-(5,6-dihydroimidazo[2,1-b]thiazol-3-yl)phenol 4e (I = 97%). A probable mechanism of its action was proposed involving the formation of a radical cation by the SET process. For the most active antioxidants 4e-g, reactivity and electrostatic surface potential were evaluated using the DFT method, and molecular docking was studied on the human peroxiredoxin 5 protein model.

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena ,Astrophysics - Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics - Abstract
CTA (Cherenkov Telescope Array) is the next generation ground-based observatory for gamma-ray astronomy at very-high energies. The Large-Sized Telescope prototype (LST-1) is located at the Northern site of CTA, on the Canary Island of La Palma. LSTs are designed to provide optimal performance in the lowest part of the energy range covered by CTA, down to $\simeq 20$ GeV. LST-1 started performing astronomical observations in November 2019, during its commissioning phase, and it has been taking data since then. We present the first LST-1 observations of the Crab Nebula, the standard candle of very-high energy gamma-ray astronomy, and use them, together with simulations, to assess the basic performance parameters of the telescope. The data sample consists of around 36 hours of observations at low zenith angles collected between November 2020 and March 2022. LST-1 has reached the expected performance during its commissioning period - only a minor adjustment of the preexisting simulations was needed to match the telescope behavior. The energy threshold at trigger level is estimated to be around 20 GeV, rising to $\simeq 30$ GeV after data analysis. Performance parameters depend strongly on energy, and on the strength of the gamma-ray selection cuts in the analysis: angular resolution ranges from 0.12 to 0.40 degrees, and energy resolution from 15 to 50%. Flux sensitivity is around 1.1% of the Crab Nebula flux above 250 GeV for a 50-h observation (12% for 30 minutes). The spectral energy distribution (in the 0.03 - 30 TeV range) and the light curve obtained for the Crab Nebula agree with previous measurements, considering statistical and systematic uncertainties. A clear periodic signal is also detected from the pulsar at the center of the Nebula., Comment: Accepted in ApJ. v3: updated author list and acknowledgements, fixed typos and other minor issues

Observations of the effect of microlensing in gravitationally lensed quasars can be used to study the structure of active galactic nuclei on distance scales down to the sizes of the supermassive black holes powering source activity. We search for the microlensing in the signal from a gravitationally lensed blazar B0218+357 in very-high-energy gamma-ray band. We combine observations of a bright flare of the source in 2014 with Fermi/LAT and MAGIC telescopes in 0.1-100 GeV energy range. Using the time-delayed leading and trailing signals from two gravitationally lensed images of the source, we measure magnification factor at the moment of the flare. We use the scaling of the maximal magnification factor with the source size to constrain the size of gamma-ray emission region in the entire 0.1-100 GeV energy range. The magnification factor in the very-high-energy band derived from a comparison of Fermi/LAT and MAGIC data is $\mu_{VHE} = 36^{+40}_{-26}$, substantially larger than that in the radio band. This suggests that one of the source images is strongly affected by microlensing at the moment of the flare. Assuming that the microlensing is produced by a stellar mass object in the lens galaxy, we constrain the size of the emission region in the $E>100$ GeV band to be $\mathrm{R_{VHE} = 2.2^{+27}_{-1.7} \times 10^{13}~cm}$. We note that the spectrum of the microlensed source was unusually hard at the moment of the flare and speculate that this hardening may be due to the energy dependent microlensing effect. This interpretation suggests that the source size decreases with energy in 0.1-100 GeV energy range studied., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
Delayed "pair echo" signal from interactions of very-high-energy gamma rays in the intergalactic medium can be used for detection of the inter-galactic magnetic field (IGMF). We use the data of Fermi/LAT telescope coupled with LHAASO observatory measurements to confirm the presence of IGMF along the line of sight to the gamma-ray burst GRB221009A. Comparing the Fermi/LAT measurements with the expected level of the pair echo flux, set by the multi-TeV LHAASO detection, we derive a lower bound $10^{-19}$ G on the IGMF with correlation length $l$ larger than 1 Mpc, improving as $l^{-1/2}$ for shorter correlation lengths. This provides an independent verification of existence of a lower bound on IGMF in the voids of the Large Scale Structure, previously derived from the observations of active galactic nuclei., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figues

The topic of this paper is testing exchangeability using e-values in the batch mode, with the Markov model as alternative. The null hypothesis of exchangeability is formalized as a Kolmogorov-type compression model, and the Bayes mixture of the Markov model w.r. to the uniform prior is taken as simple alternative hypothesis. Using e-values instead of p-values leads to a computationally efficient testing procedure. In the appendixes I explain connections with the algorithmic theory of randomness and with the traditional theory of testing statistical hypotheses. In the standard statistical terminology, this paper proposes a new permutation test. This test can also be interpreted as a poor man's version of Kolmogorov's deficiency of randomness., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, 3 tables

events ,event marketing ,marketing tools ,social media ,Economic growth, development, planning ,HD72-88 - Abstract
The article examines the distinctive characteristics of the utilisation of events within the marketing tools system in Ukraine. Furthermore, it analyses the prevailing global trends in the deployment of events within the marketing tools system. In particular, the annual increase in event budgeting is highlighted as a key trend, enabling organisations to plan more significant and better events in order to achieve their marketing goals. The implementation of technology in event marketing, whereby companies invest in events and utilise technology to create memorable experiences for customers and facilitate long-term growth, represents a significant trend. However, there is a shortage of qualified professionals in the field of event marketing, which presents a challenge for organisations seeking to engage with target audiences. Research indicates that 40% of event organisers perceive attracting new participants as their primary marketing challenge. Additionally, the popularity of remote and combined events, alongside the recognition of the effectiveness of live offline events in event marketing, represent noteworthy developments. It has been demonstrated that marketing tools have undergone substantial modifications and adaptations in the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. One of the most instrumental tools to emerge in this context is that of events. Notwithstanding the challenging circumstances, event marketing continues to represent a potent instrument for communication and persuasion among target audiences. The organisation of events in the context of armed conflict necessitates a high degree of vigilance and consideration for the safety of all participants. Those responsible for organising such events are compelled to give due consideration to the potential risks and to devise contingency plans in the event of unforeseen circumstances. Concurrently, such occurrences serve as a conduit for bolstering the populace's morale, disseminating crucial intelligence, and fortifying national unity. It is imperative to acknowledge that the war has compelled businesses to reassess their marketing strategies, resulting in the implementation of more adaptable and flexible approaches to event organisation. Online and hybrid formats have become indispensable tools for enabling continuous customer engagement despite physical constraints. Consequently, events in Ukraine's marketing tool system during wartime have been demonstrated to be highly efficient, flexible, and adaptable. Such events play a pivotal role in sustaining business stability, fostering new forms of audience interaction, and strengthening social bonds.

The goal of the study was to obtain the fractions of endogenous and hydrolytic peptides from the hydrobiont Euphausia superba and evaluate their antioxidant potential and possible activity against certain hemostasis factors. The fraction of endogenous peptides was isolated by stepwise precipitation of proteins with perchloric acid and ethanol. Peptides with a molecular weight up to 5 kDa were isolated by by ultrafiltration. Hydrolysis with trypsin was used to obtain hydrolytic peptides. The purity of peptide fractions was confirmed by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Antioxidant activity was assessed by analyzing the peptides’ reducing power, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, and nitric oxide radical scavenging activity. To assess the effect of peptides on the amidolytic activity of thrombin, active thrombin was preincubated with peptide fractions, and further thrombin activity was determined using the chromogenic substrate S2238. The ability of the peptides to influence ADP-induced platelet aggregation was tested in platelet-rich plasma. The results showed that endogenous and hydrolytic peptides exhibit moderate antioxidant activity; however, endogenous peptides were more potent antioxidants than peptides produced by trypsin hydrolysis. The influence of E. superba peptides on some hemostasis factors has been established. Inhibition of ADP-induced platelet aggregation by hydrolytic peptides (by 1.76 times) was found, while endogenous peptides possess the opposite effect. The differences in the activity and effectiveness of the peptides indicate that the fractions contain molecules that differ in amino acid composition. Considering the data, E. superba can be a source for peptides with moderate antioxidant activity and peptides that can affect the activity of key hemostasis factors.
