Supporting Indigenous students' social-emotional learning (SEL) is important given the systemic impact of colonialism that has contributed to their higher mental health and academic disparities compared to White students. One way to promote SEL is through professional development for educators, yet there has been little research on the development of SEL programs that are culturally responsive to Indigenous people and contexts. The purpose of this study is to highlight the process of culturally adapting a social-emotional program, "Educators Navigating and Generating Approaches for Genuine Empowerment" (ENGAGE), for educators at a school located in a tribal nation in the Rocky Mountain region. Driven by transformative SEL and tribal critical race theory, we coadapted ENGAGE with community members through community-based participatory research. Through thematic analysis, we examined the unique values and culturally responsive considerations that arose during the research process. Five themes emerged from the data: (1) Understanding resilience in the face of trauma; (2) Fostering culture and traditions; (3) Building Relationships, respect, and reciprocity; (4) Highlighting the core role of educators in SEL; and (5) Educators supporting each other. Implications for school psychologists, including considerations for decolonizing research and practice, are discussed.

Introduction and aim: Adherence to colorectal cancer (CRC) screening is essential for the effectiveness of screening programs. Even though organized screening programs can improve the quality of the process and adherence, there are still challenges to overcome. The aim of the present study, in which we implemented a biennial organized screening program for CRC, was to describe adherence and participation patterns. Materials and methods: A longitudinal, descriptive study was conducted, in which a team of trained patient navigators carried out interventions, with reminders via cellphone communication, to follow a cohort of 301 subjects eligible for CRC screening, utilizing a fecal immunochemical test (FIT). All the follow-up subjects received a FIT kit. Results: A total of 747 cellphone calls were made and divided into three interventions. From the initial cohort, 126 subjects completed their biennial screening process through the FIT, indicating a consistent adherence rate of 41.8% to our program. The participation patterns were: 126 consistent participants (41.8%), 160 inconsistent participants (53.2%), and 15 participants that were never contacted (5%). Conclusions: In conclusion, our study underlines the importance of organized screening programs in the early detection of CRC. The implementation of follow-up interventions, through reminders and the training of patient navigators, can improve adherence, but there is a need for examining new strategies, to overcome barriers to communication via cellphone. A pesar de que los programas de tamizaje organizado pueden mejorar la calidad del proceso y la adherencia, aún hay desafíos para lograrlo. En este estudio, implementamos un programa bienal de tamizaje organizado para CCR con el objetivo de describir la adherencia y los patrones de participación. Materiales y métodos: Se realizó un estudio longitudinal y descriptivo en el que un equipo de navegadores de pacientes capacitados realizó intervenciones con recordatorios mediante llamadas telefónicas para dar seguimiento a una cohorte de 301 sujetos elegibles para el tamizaje de CCR mediante una prueba de inmunoquímica fecal (FIT). Todos los participantes que cumplieron con su seguimiento recibieron un Kit FIT. Resultados: Se realizaron 747 llamadas telefónicas divididas en tres intervenciones. De la cohorte inicial, 126 sujetos completaron su proceso de tamizaje bienal mediante FIT, lo que indica una adherencia consistente del 41.8% a nuestro programa. Los patrones de participación fueron 126 participantes consistentes (41.8%), 160 inconsistentes (53.2%) y 15 nunca atendidos (5%). Conclusiones: En conclusión, nuestro estudio resalta la importancia de los programas de tamizaje organizado en la detección temprana del cáncer colorrectal. La implementación de intervenciones de seguimiento mediante recordatorios y la capacitación de navegadores de pacientes, puede lograr mejoras en la adherencia, sin embargo, es necesario explorar nuevas estrategias para superar las barreras en la comunicación telefónica.

Abstract The application of Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) tools in total (TKA) and unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) emerges with the potential to improve patient-centered decision-making and outcome prediction in orthopedics, as ML algorithms can generate patient-specific risk models. This review aims to evaluate the potential of the application of AI/ML models in the prediction of TKA outcomes and the identification of populations at risk. An extensive search in the following databases: MEDLINE, Scopus, Cinahl, Google Scholar, and EMBASE was conducted using the PIOS approach to formulate the research question. The PRISMA guideline was used for reporting the evidence of the data extracted. A modified eight-item MINORS checklist was employed for the quality assessment. The databases were screened from the inception to June 2022. Forty-four out of the 542 initially selected articles were eligible for the data analysis; 5 further articles were identified and added to the review from the PUBMED database, for a total of 49 articles included. A total of 2,595,780 patients were identified, with an overall average age of the patients of 70.2 years ± 7.9 years old. The five most common AI/ML models identified in the selected articles were: RF, in 38.77% of studies; GBM, in 36.73% of studies; ANN in 34.7% of articles; LR, in 32.65%; SVM in 26.53% of articles. This systematic review evaluated the possible uses of AI/ML models in TKA, highlighting their potential to lead to more accurate predictions, less time-consuming data processing, and improved decision-making, all while minimizing user input bias to provide risk-based patient-specific care.

Abstract Background Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) are a major public health issue with unclear aetiology. Changes in the composition and functionality of the intestinal microbiota are associated with these pathologies, including the depletion of strict anaerobes such as Feacalibacterium prausnitzii. Less evidence is observed for depletion in other anaerobes, among which bifidobacteria. This study characterized the taxonomic and functional diversity of bifidobacteria isolated from the human intestinal microbiota in active and non-active IBD patients by a culturomics approach and evaluated if these bifidobacteria might be used as probiotics for gut health. Results A total of 341 bifidobacteria were isolated from the intestinal microbiota of IBD patients (52 Crohn’s disease and 26 ulcerative colitis patients), with a high proportion of Bifidobacterium dentium strains (28% of isolated bifidobacteria). In ulcerative colitis, the major species identified was B. dentium (39% of isolated bifidobacteria), in active and non-active ulcerative colitis. In Crohn’s disease, B. adolescentis was the major species isolated from non-active patients (40%), while similar amounts of B. dentium and B. adolescentis were found in active Crohn’s disease patients. The relative abundance of B. dentium was increased with age, both in Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis and active and non-active IBD patients. Antibacterial capacities of bifidobacteria isolated from non-active ulcerative colitis against Escherichia coli LF82 and Salmonella enterica ATCC 14028 were observed more often compared to strains isolated from active ulcerative colitis. Finally, B. longum were retained as strains with the highest probiotic potential as they were the major strains presenting exopolysaccharide synthesis, antibacterial activity, and anti-inflammatory capacities. Antimicrobial activity and EPS synthesis were further correlated to the presence of antimicrobial and EPS gene clusters by in silico analysis. Conclusions Different bifidobacterial taxonomic profiles were identified in the microbiota of IBD patients. The most abundant species were B. dentium, mainly associated to the microbiota of ulcerative colitis patients and B. adolescentis, in the intestinal microbiota of Crohn’s disease patients. Additionally, the relative abundance of B. dentium significantly increased with age. Furthermore, this study evidenced that bifidobacteria with probiotic potential (antipathogenic activity, exopolysaccharide production and anti-inflammatory activity), especially B. longum strains, can be isolated from the intestinal microbiota of both active and non-active Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis patients.

El sobrepeso y la obesidad en estudiantes universitarios de medicina han emergido como preocupaciones de salud pública, reflejando una tendencia global hacia un aumento de estos problemas en la población joven, este fenómeno se atribuye a una combinación de factores, incluyendo la carga académica intensiva, el estrés asociado con la formación médica y cambios en los hábitos alimentarios durante la vida universitaria. El sobrepeso y la obesidad son problemas de salud que han alcanzado proporciones alarmantes en México en las últimas décadas, convirtiéndose en un problema de salud pública de gran magnitud, estas condiciones no solo afectan a adultos, sino también a niños y adolescentes, generando un impacto significativo en la calidad de vida y aumentando el riesgo de enfermedades crónicas como la diabetes tipo 2, enfermedades cardiovasculares y ciertos tipos de cáncer. El objetivo de la investigación fue identificar la frecuencia de sobrepeso y obesidad en estudiantes universitarios de pregrado. La metodología trató de un estudio de cohorte descriptivo, analítico y transversal en el que se recopilaron datos mediante la valoración de la composición corporal (talla, peso, índice de masa corporal) aplicada a 159 pasantes de servicio social de medicina para obtener los datos de peso, talla, índice de masa corporal, circunferencia de cintura y cadera. Los resultados revelan que el 48.9% de la población estudiantil tiene sobrepeso u obesidad, predominando en el sexo femenino. Se concluye que es crucial generar conciencia acerca de este fenómeno y promover hábitos de vida saludables en los universitarios a través de programas de atención a la salud establecidos como parte de su vida universitaria.

Abstract Purpose Pathogen identification is key in the treatment of septic arthritis (SA) and periprosthetic joint infections (PJI). This study evaluates the outcome of the application of a new, score‐based SA and PJI diagnostic algorithm, which includes the execution of molecular testing on synovial fluid. Methods A score‐based diagnostic algorithm, which includes serologic and synovial fluid markers determination using multiplex PCR (mPCR) and Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) molecular testing, has been applied to a consecutive series of patients with clinically suspected SA or PJI. Patients with a score ≥6 underwent synovial fluid molecular testing, together with traditional culture, to identify the pathogen and its genetically determined antibiotic resistance. Results One hundred and seventeen joints in 117 patients (62.5% women; average age 73 years) met the criteria for possible SA/PJI. The affected joint was the knee in 87.5% (joint replacement 66.5%; native joint 21%) and the hip in 12.5% (all replaced joints). 43/117 patients (36.7%) were ultimately diagnosed with SA/PJI. Among the various testing technologies applied, mPCR was the main determinant for pathogen identification in 63%, standard culture in 26%, and mNGS in 11%. Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis were the top two microorganisms identified by mPCR, while Staphylococcus epidermidis was the prevalent organism identified by NGS. mPCR detected the presence/absence of the genetically determined antibiotic resistance of all identified microorganisms. The average timeframe for pathogen identification was 3.13 h for mPCR, 4.5 days for culture, and 3.2 days for NGS. Conclusions Molecular diagnostic technologies represent an innovative screening for fast microorganism identification when a joint infection is clinically suspected. Monotherapy is the recommended initial treatment for early Parkinson’s disease. The pharmacological options for initial treatment include dopaminergic agonists, monoamine oxidase B inhibitors, and levodopa formulations. Several factors should be considered when selecting the optimal treatment, such as disease severity, disease duration, age, activity level, and the risk of developing motor and non-motor complications. Early evidence on the potential role of levodopa formulations in the risk of dyskinesia led to levodopa aversion in the late 1990s and early 2000s, favoring the use of levodopa-sparing options like dopamine agonists. This shift resulted in an increase in behavioral adverse effects, such as impulse control disorders, leading to a subsequent dopamine agonist aversion in the mid-2000s. This review aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the existing literature regarding the benefits and drawbacks of levodopa versus levodopa-sparing strategies in drug-naive early-stage Parkinson’s disease.

Los parásitos son un componente de la biodiversidad, que sufren afectaciones por los cambios en el ambiente y/o sus hospederos. Por esto, se considera que Acanthobothrium spp., pueden ser un biondicador de algunas amenazas en las costas de México. Estos céstodos tienen ciclos de vida indirectos, y son parásitos intestinales de elasmobranquios. Se analizaron datos de 21 años de colecta de Acanthobothrium spp., parásitos del agunas especies de batoideos, en diferentes localidades y fechas del litoral de México. Se calculó la prevalencia, y se realizó un análisis de coordenadas principales, considerando una distancia multimétrica no lineal (estacionalidad de las colectas (lluvias y secas), localidades y años de colectas) para evaluar una probable correlación entre la ausencia o presencia de Acanthobothrium. Durante el periodo evaluado, se registró un decremento en la biodiversidad de Acanthobothrium en el Golfo de México, se registraron bajos valores de prevalencia de las poblaciones de estos parásitos. Esto se interpreta como un efecto de la sensibilidad de Acanthobothrium spp. a los cambios ambientales. Los ciclos de vida de Acanthobothrium spp. pueden afectarse directa o indirectamente por contaminantes, ya sea en las larvas de vida libre, o en larvas parásitas y/o adultos de los hospederos intermediarios o definitivos. Por ello, se concluye que el incremento de contaminación en el Golfo de México afecta los valores de prevalencia de Acanthobothrium spp. Lo que destaca la importancia del uso de los parásitos como bioindicadores de la calidad ambiental.

Alpha oscillations play a vital role in managing the brain's resources, inhibiting neural activity as a function of their phase and amplitude, and are changed in many brain disorders. Developing minimally invasive tools to modulate alpha activity and identifying the parameters that determine its response to exogenous modulators is essential for the implementation of focussed interventions. We introduce Alpha Closed-Loop Auditory Stimulation (αCLAS) as an EEG-based method to modulate and investigate these brain rhythms in humans with specificity and selectivity, using targeted auditory stimulation. Across a series of independent experiments, we demonstrate that αCLAS alters alpha power, frequency, and connectivity in a phase, amplitude, and topography-dependent manner. Using single-pulse-αCLAS, we show that the effects of auditory stimuli on alpha oscillations can be explained within the theoretical framework of oscillator theory and a phase-reset mechanism. Finally, we demonstrate the functional relevance of our approach by showing that αCLAS can interfere with sleep onset dynamics in a phase-dependent manner.

ObjectiveTo introduce MexOMICS, a Mexican Consortium focused on establishing electronic databases to collect, cross-reference, and share health-related and omics data on the Mexican population.MethodsSince 2019, the MexOMICS Consortium has established three electronic-based registries: the Mexican Twin Registry (TwinsMX), Mexican Lupus Registry (LupusRGMX), and the Mexican Parkinson's Research Network (MEX-PD), designed and implemented using the Research Electronic Data Capture web-based application. Participants were enrolled through voluntary participation and on-site engagement with medical specialists. We also acquired DNA samples and Magnetic Resonance Imaging scans in subsets of participants.ResultsThe registries have successfully enrolled a large number of participants from a variety of regions within Mexico: TwinsMX (n = 2,915), LupusRGMX (n = 1,761) and MEX-PD (n = 750). In addition to sociodemographic, psychosocial, and clinical data, MexOMICS has collected DNA samples to study the genetic biomarkers across the three registries. Cognitive function has been assessed with the Montreal Cognitive Assessment in a subset of 376 MEX-PD participants. Furthermore, a subset of 267 twins have participated in cognitive evaluations with the Creyos platform and in MRI sessions acquiring structural, functional, and spectroscopy brain imaging; comparable evaluations are planned for LupusRGMX and MEX-PD.ConclusionsThe MexOMICS registries offer a valuable repository of information concerning the potential interplay of genetic and environmental factors in health conditions among the Mexican population.

The research question is whether Marine Spatial Planning is a tool, a methodology, a political process, or a combination of the three. Thus, this paper provides an understanding of Marine Spatial Planning: its origins, historical analysis, development, implications, and agendas, both globally and in Brazil. Concepts like politics, economics, law, the environment, geography, and strategy employed in ocean studies, which are always changing and being talked about in terms of how they work together and clash, are used as theoretical references. The research methodology employs an extensive bibliographical review of primary and secondary sources while prioritizing qualitative analytic methods. Conclusions are drawn about the international maritime community's understanding of Marine Spatial Planning, specifically its role in enhancing ocean governance and restructuring state marine territories, as well as the intricate connections between these aspects. In Brazil, despite the relative priority of political power in the last decade, given Brazil's international commitments, Marine Spatial Planning is still in its early stages, with not much expressed in effective domestic actions.
