1. Inferences for Random Graphs Evolved by Clustering Attachment

Abstract

The evolution of random undirected graphs by the clustering attachment (CA) both without node and edge deletion and with uniform node or edge deletion is investigated. Theoretical results are obtained for the CA without node and edge deletion when a newly appended node is connected to two existing nodes of the graph at each evolution step. Theoretical results concern to (1) the sequence of increments of the consecutive mean clustering coefficients tends to zero; (2) the sequences of node degrees and triangle counts of any fixed node which are proved to be submartingales. These results were obtained for any initial graph. The simulation study is provided for the CA with uniform node or edge deletion and without any deletion. It is shown that (1) the CA leads to light-tailed distributed node degrees and triangle counts; (2) the average clustering coefficient tends to a constant over time; (3) the mean node degree and the mean triangle count increase over time with the rate depending on the parameters of the CA. 2. Investigation of triangle counts in graphs evolved by uniform clustering attachment

Abstract

The clustering attachment model introduced in the paper Bagrow and Brockmann (2013) may be used as an evolution tool of random networks. We propose a new clustering attachment model which can be considered as the limit of the former clustering attachment model as model parameter $\alpha$ tends to zero. We focus on the study of a total triangle count that is considered in the literature as an important characteristic of the network clustering. It is proved that total triangle count tends to infinity a.s. for the proposed model. Our simulation study is used for the modeling of sequences of triangle counts. It is based on the interpretation of the clustering attachment as a generalized P\'{o}lya-Eggenberger urn model that is introduced here at first time., Comment: 16 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

In this paper we continue the investigation of the SRCEN estimator of the extreme value index $\gamma$ (or the tail index $\alpha=1/\gamma$) proposed in \cite{MCE} for $\gamma>1/2$. We propose a new estimator based on the local maximum. This, in fact, is a modification of the SRCEN estimator to the case $\gamma>0$. We establish the consistency and asymptotic normality of the newly proposed estimator for i.i.d. data. 5. Several new tail index estimators

Abstract

In the paper we propose some new class of functions which is used to construct tail index estimators. Functions from this new class is non-monotone in general, but presents a product of two monotone functions: the power function and the logarithmic function, which plays essential role in the classical Hill estimator. Introduced new estimators have better asymptotic performance comparing with the Hill estimator and other popular estimators over all range of the parameters present in the second order regular variation condition. Asymptotic normality of the introduced estimators is proved, and comparison (using asymptotic mean square error) with other estimators of the tail index is provided. Abstract

Abstract Background The impact of weather on morbidity from stroke has been analysed in previous studies. As the risk of stroke was mostly associated with changing weather, the changes in the daily stroke occurrence may be associated with changes in atmospheric circulation. The aim of our study was to detect and evaluate the association between daily numbers of ischaemic strokes (ISs) and haemorrhagic strokes (HSs) and the teleconnection pattern. Methods The study was performed in Kaunas, Lithuania, from 2000 to 2010. The daily numbers of ISs, subarachnoid haemorrhages (SAHs), and intracerebral haemorrhages (ICHs) were obtained from the Kaunas Stroke Register. We evaluated the association between these types of stroke and the teleconnection pattern by applying Poisson regression and adjusting for the linear trend, month, and other weather variables. Results During the study period, we analysed 4038 cases (2226 men and 1812 women) of stroke. Of these, 3245 (80.4%) cases were ISs, 533 (13.2%) cases were ICHs, and 260 (6.4%) cases were SAHs. An increased risk of SAH was associated with a change in mean daily atmospheric pressure over 3.9 hPa (RR = 1.49, 95% CI 1.14–1.96), and a stronger El Niño event had a protective effect against SAHs (RR = 0.34, 95% CI 0.16–0.69). The risk of HS was positively associated with East Atlantic/West Russia indices (RR = 1.13, 95% CI 1.04–1.23). 11. The Role of ApoE Serum Levels and ApoE Gene Polymorphisms in Patients with Laryngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Abstract

Recent studies have revealed that the inflammatory ApoE effect may play a significant role in various cancer development. However, this effect has still not been analyzed in patients with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). In the present study, we evaluated two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of ApoE (rs7412 and rs429358) and determined their associations with LSCC development and the LSCC patients’ five-year survival rate. Additionally, we analyzed serum ApoE levels using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. A total of 602 subjects (291 histologically verified LSCC patients and 311 healthy controls) were involved in this study. The genotyping was carried out using the real-time PCR. We revealed that ApoE ε3/ε3 was associated with a 1.7-fold higher probability of developing LSCC (p = 0.001), with 1.7-fold increased odds of developing LSCC without metastasis to the lymph nodes (p = 0.002) and with a 2.0-fold increased odds of developing well-differentiated LSCC (p = 0.008), as well as 1.6-fold increased odds of developing poorly differentiated LSCC development (p = 0.012). The ApoE ε2/ε4 and ε3/ε4 genotypes were associated with a 2.9-fold and 1.5-fold decrease in the likelihood of developing LSCC (p = 0.042; p = 0.037, respectively). ApoE ε3/ε4 was found associated with a 2.4-fold decreased likelihood of developing well-differentiated LSCC (p = 0.013). Conclusion: ApoE ε2/ε4 and ε3/ε4 were found to play a protective role in LSCC development, while ApoE ε3/ε3 may have a risk position in LSCC development.

Abstract

We report on a search for pair production of first-generation scalar leptoquarks ($LQ$) in $p \bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=1.96 TeV using an integrated luminosity of 203 $pb^{-1}$ collected at the Fermilab Tevatron collider by the CDF experiment. We observe no evidence for $LQ$ production in the topologies arising from $LQ \bar{LQ} \to eqeq$ and $LQ \bar{LQ} \to eq \nu q$, and derive 95% C.L. upper limits on the $LQ$ production cross section. %as a function of $\beta$, where $\beta$ is the branching fraction for $LQ \to eq$. The results are combined with those obtained from a separately reported CDF search in the topology arising from $LQ\bar{LQ} \to \nu q \nu q$ and 95% C.L. lower limits on the LQ mass as a function of $\beta = BR(LQ \to eq) $ are derived. The limits are 236, 205 and 145 GeV/c$^2$ for $\beta$ = 1, $\beta$ = 0.5 and $\beta$ = 0.1, respectively., Comment: submitted to PRL

Abstract

The properties of three-jet events with total transverse energy greater than 320 GeV and individual jet energy greater than 20 GeV have been analyzed and compared to absolute predictions from a next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD calculation. These data, of integrated luminosity 86 pb^-1, were recorded by the CDF Experiment for proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV. This study tests a model of higher order QCD processes that result in gluon emission and can be used to estimate the magnitude of the contribution of processes higher than NLO. The total cross section is measured to be 466 +/- 3(stat.)^{+207}_{-70}(syst.) pb. The differential cross section is furthermore measured for all kinematically accessible regions of the Dalitz plane, including those for which the theoretical prediction is unreliable. While the measured cross section is consistent with the theoretical prediction in magnitude, the two differ somewhat in shape in the Dalitz plane.

Multivariate data analysis techniques have the potential to improve physics analyses in many ways. The common classification problem of signal/background discrimination is one example. The Support Vector Machine learning algorithm is a relatively new way to solve pattern recognition problems and has several advantages over methods such as neural networks. Following the confirmation of the top quark discovery at the Tevatron, the next step is to begin studying its properties. Because the scale of electroweak symmetry breaking is of the same order as the measured top mass, the top quark may be very sensitive to new physics. We describe measurements of the total top-antitop cross section, the top-antitop invariant mass, the top transverse momentum distribution, and single top production from Run 1 data at D0 and CDF. 19. SIRT1 Contributes as an Invasiveness Marker in Pituitary Adenoma

Abstract

The aim of the study was to find the association between SIRT1 concentration, SIRT1 rs3758391, rs3818292, rs7895833 polymorphisms and clinical manifestations of pituitary adenoma (PA). The study included 108 patients with PA and 216 healthy individuals. Using commercial kits, DNA was extracted from peripheral blood leukocytes. To determine the PA and control group subjects genotypes was used real-time PCR method, for SIRT concentration measurement we used ELISA method. The statistical data analysis was completed using the “BM SPSS Statistics 20.0” software. Results: We performed statistical analysis of SNPs in the patient and healthy controls and patients’ subgroups and found statistically significant differences in rs7895833 genotype (A/A, A/G, G/G) distributions between the active PA and control groups (67.9%, 24.6%, 5.7% vs. 72.2%, 27.3%, 0.5%; p = 0.02) Also, the results showed that the rs7895833 G/G genotype is associated with about 13-fold increased odds of active PA development compared to the A/A (OR = 13.95% CI: 1.314–128.632; p = 0.028) and both A/A and A/G genotypes (OR = 12.9; 95% CI: 1.314–126.624; p = 0.028). There is ample evidence that SIRT1 in the pituitary and other target organs modifies the synthesis, secretion, and activity of hormones to trigger adaptive responses, thus we decided to include this in our study. When determining the serum concentration of SIRT1, we did not find a statistically significant difference between the PA group and the control group. SIRT1 serum level was statistically significantly higher in women with PA than in healthy control women (1.115 (3.748) vs. 136 (0.211); p = 0.008). To conclude—SIRT1 rs7895833 G/G genotype is associated with about 13-fold increased odds of active PA development compared to the A/A and both A/A and A/G genotypes. SIRT1 serum levels are higher in women with PA than in healthy women.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: SIRT1 is a multifunctional protein, possibly essential in tumorigenesis pathways, which can act both as a tumor promoter and tumor suppressor depending on the oncogenes, specific to particular tumors. Pathogenesis of laryngeal cancer is multifactorial and the association of SIRT1 expression with the clinical characteristics and prognosis of LSCC has not been fully identified. OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to evaluate associations between single gene nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of SIRT1 (rs3818292, rs3758391, and rs7895833), serum SIRT1 levels, and 5-year survival rate in patients with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). METHODS: The study involved 302 patients with LSCC and 409 healthy control subjects. The genotyping of SNPs was performed using RT-PCR, and serum SIRT1 levels were determined by the ELISA method. RESULTS: Our study found significant differences in genotype distributions of SIRT1 rs3758391 polymorphisms between the study groups. SIRT1 rs3758391 T/T genotype was associated with the increased LSCC development odds (OR = 1.960 95% CI = 1.028–3.737; p= 0.041). Carriers of SIRT1 rs3758391 T/T genotype had statistically significantly increased odds of LSCC development into advanced stages under the codominant and recessive genetic models (OR = 2.387 95% CI = 1.091–5.222; p= 0.029 and OR = 2.287 95% CI = 1.070–4.888; p= 0.033, respectively). There were no statistically significant differences in serum SIRT1 levels between the LSCC and control groups. However, LSCC patients with SIRT1 rs3818292 AG genotype demonstrated a tendency to significantly lower SIRT1 serum levels than controls (p= 0.034). No statistically significant associations between SIRT1 (rs3818292, rs3758391, and rs7895833) SNPs and the 5-year survival rate of LSCC patients were found. CONCLUSION: The present study indicated a statistically significant association between the SIRT1 rs3758391 T/T genotype and increased LSCC development odds. LSCC patients with SIRT1 rs3818292 AG genotype showed a tendency to manifest with lower SIRT1 serum levels. No associations between SIRT1 SNPs and the 5-year survival rate of LSCC patients were detected.

Abstract

Background/aim The matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) play an important role in the physiological and pathological remodeling of tissues including carcinogenesis. The study's aim was to assess the relations between MMP-2(-735C/T), MMP-2(-1306C/T), MMP-9(-1562C/T), and MMP-3(-11715A/6A) polymorphisms, and clinical/morphological manifestation of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) and benign vocal fold lesions (BVFL). Patients and methods Two hundred and seventeen patients with LSCC and BVFL and 458 controls were included in this study. The genotyping was performed using the real-time polymerase chain reaction method. Results The MMP-2(-1306C/T) C/T genotype was significantly rarer among the patients with moderate-poorly differentiated LSCC compared to the control group, however the MMP-3(-11715A/6A) 6A/6A genotype was significantly more frequent compared to controls. Smoking and 6A/6A genotype of MMP-3(-11715A/6A) polymorphism were associated with increased odds of LSCC risk. No associations between MMP genotypes and BVFL were found. Conclusion Smoking and MMP-3 (-11715A/6A) 6A/6A genotype may cause a higher risk for developing LSCC.

Abstract

We present a measurement of relative partial widths and decay rate CP asymmetries in K−K+ and π−π+ decays of D0 mesons produced in pp¯ collisions at s√=1.96 TeV. We use a sample of 2×105 D*+→D0π+ (and charge conjugate) decays with the D0 decaying to K−π+, K−K+, and π−π+, corresponding to 123 pb−1 of data collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab II experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. No significant direct CP violation is observed. We measure Γ(D0→K−K+)/Γ(D0→K−π+)=0.0992±0.0011±0.0012, Γ(D0→π−π+)/Γ(D0→K−π+)=0.035 94±0.000 54±0.000 40, ACP(K−K+)=(2.0±1.2±0.6)%, and ACP(π−π+)=(1.0±1.3±0.6)%, where, in all cases, the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Abstract

We present a search for long-lived doubly charged Higgs bosons (H±±), with signatures of high ionization energy loss and muonlike penetration. We use 292 pb−1 of data collected in pp¯ collisions at √s=1.96 TeV by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. Observing no evidence of long-lived doubly charged particle production, we exclude H±±L and H±±R bosons with masses below 133 GeV/c2 and 109 GeV/c2, respectively. In the degenerate case we exclude H±± mass below 146 GeV/c2. All limits are quoted at the 95% confidence level.

43. Contrato de aprendizagem: fundamentos, possibilidades e limites à luz da evolução do direito à educação

Abstract

O presente trabalho tem por objetivo analisar os fundamentos, as possibilidades e os limites de pactuação do contrato de aprendizagem, considerando principalmente a sua prestação educativa e o direito à educação. Primeiramente, fizemos uma análise histórica do instituto, cujas origens remontam às corporações de ofício medievais. Observamos que o instituto sofreu profundas transformações com a industrialização e foi tipificado no Brasil, sob influência da doutrina taylorista de organização racional do trabalho. A Consolidação das Leis do Trabalho - CLT é o diploma legal que disciplina o contrato de aprendizagem. A partir da legislação aplicável ao contrato, expusemos e analisamos elementos caracterizadores da relação de aprendizagem e elementos que são peculiaridades da tipificação do contrato, no Brasil. Observamos que a legislação celetista é muito sucinta na disciplina do conteúdo dos programas de aprendizagem, utilizando a expressão \"formação técnico-profissional metódica\" para se referir à prestação educativa do contrato. Analisamos a prestação educativa com fundamento na doutrina e também nas normas infralegais aplicáveis ao contrato. Constatamos que os programas de aprendizagem podem comportar diversos cursos e programas de educação profissional. Estabelecemos, assim, um diálogo entre a legislação trabalhista e a legislação educacional. Analisamos também algumas questões correlatas à aprendizagem, como os níveis de educação no Brasil, a dualidade histórica entre educação geral e educação profissional, a idade para a educação escolar e a idade para o trabalho, o trabalho infantil e o trabalho educativo previsto no Estatuto da Criança e do Adolescente - ECA. Por fim, analisamos brevemente as transformações pelas quais passou a aprendizagem, a partir das alterações realizadas na CLT, pela Lei nº 10.097/2000. A aprendizagem passa a ser instrumento de uma política pública, que objetiva a concretização dos direitos ao trabalho, à profissionalização e à educação, destinada prioritariamente aos adolescentes entre quatorze e dezoito anos, mas aberta também às pessoas que possuem até vinte e quatro anos idade. The present study aims to analyze foundations, possibilities and limits of apprenticeship contract, considering mainly its educational provision and the right to education. First, We did a historical analysis of the Institute whose origins date back to medieval craft corporations. We noted that the institute has undergone profound changes in industrialization and it has been typified in Brazil under the influence of the Taylor doctrine of rational organization of the work. The Consolidation of Labor Laws - CLL is the legal diploma that governs the apprenticeship contract. Under applicable legislation to the contract, we have exposed and analyzed elements that characterized the apprenticeship relationship and elements that are peculiarities of the typification of the contract in Brazil. We observe that the legislation is very succinct as for the discipline of the apprenticeship programs contents, using the term \"technical and vocational methodical training\" referring to the educational performance of the contract. We analyzed the educational provision based on the doctrine and also in the infra legal norms applicable to the contract. We have found that apprenticeship programs can include various courses and vocational education programs. We thus established a dialogue between labor legislation and educational legislation. We also analyzed some issues related to apprenticeship, such as the levels of education in Brazil, the historical duality between general education and vocational education, the age for school education and work, child labor and educational work provided for Child and Adolescent Statute (known in the original Portuguese as ECA). Finally, we briefly analyzed the transformation through which they went on apprenticeship based on the changes made according to The Consolidation of Labor Laws - CLL. under the Law 10,097 / 2000. apprenticeship becomes an instrument of public policy, which aims to achieve the right to work, professionalization and education targeted especially at adolescents between ages fourteen to eighteen and also for those people who are up to twenty-four years.

Facial pain is one of the symptoms of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) but can be associated with other pathological conditions. The present study retrospectively evaluated the occurrence of nonarticular incidental findings in panoramic radiographs in a group of patients with painful TMDs. Outpatients with a diagnosis of TMD were included and distributed into three groups: arthralgia, myalgia or arthralgia and myalgia, according to the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD). Nonarticular incidental findings of their panoramic radiographs were classified in relation to pathological, dental and endodontic status. The dependency relationships among the variables were analyzed using the likelihood test. Sixty patients (38 women and 22 men; mean age: 36.9 years) were evaluated. There was a predominance of arthralgia plus disc displacement (43.4 %), followed by myopain plus arthralgia and disc displacement (38.3 %) and myopain (18.3 %). Pathologic radiographic changes such as bone loss, caries, maxillary sinus opacification and periapical lesions were frequent. Dental alterations such as the absence and altered position of teeth and impacted teeth were frequent. Endodontic changes such as periapical lesions with or without endodontic treatment were frequent. There was no significant difference between groups except for gyroversion. The incidental findings were compatible with caries, sinusitis, impacted tooth and periapical lesion, which may be associated with orofacial pain and could potentially be superimposed on the initial diagnosis, although this hypothesis was discarded. Findings such as the absence and altered position of teeth were also frequent, which may represent occlusal factors associated with TMDs.

RESUMEN: El dolor orofacial es uno de los síntomas de los trastornos temporomandibulares (TTM), pero puede estar asociado con otras afecciones patológicas. El presente estudio evaluó retrospectivamente la aparición de hallazgos incidentales no articulares a través de ortopantomografías en un grupo de pacientes con TTM dolorosas. Se incluyeron pacientes con diagnóstico de TTM y se distribuyeron en tres grupos: artralgia, mialgia o artralgia y mialgia, de acuerdo con los criterios de diagnóstico para los trastornos temporomandibulares (DC/TMD). Los hallazgos incidentales no articulares de las ortopantomografias se clasificaron en relación al estado patológico, dental y endodóncico. Las relaciones de dependencia entre las variables se analizaron mediante la prueba de probabilidad. Fueron evaluados 60 pacientes (38 mujeres y 22 hombres; edad media: 36,9 años). Hubo predominio de artralgia más desplazamiento de disco (43,4 %), seguido de mialgia más artralgia y desplazamiento de disco (38,3 %) y mialgia (18,3 %). Las alteraciones radiográficas patológicas como pérdida ósea, carie dentaria, opacificación del seno maxilar y lesiones periapicales fueron frecuentes. Entre las alteraciones dentales, las impactaciones, malposiciones o ausencias dentarias fueron frecuentes. Entre las alteraciones endodóncicas, las lesiones periapicales frecuentes. No hubo diferencias significativas entre los grupos, excepto para la girosversión dentaria. Los hallazgos incidentales fueron compatibles con carie dentaria, sinusitis, diente impactado y lesión periapical, lo que podría estar asociado con el dolor orofacial y así estar sobrepuesto en el diagnóstico inicial, aunque esta hipótesis fue descartada. Hallazgos como la ausencia y la posición alterada de los dientes también fueron frecuentes, lo que puede representar factores oclusales asociados con TTM.

Abstract

Background/aim The study aimed to evaluate associations of relative leukocyte telomere length (LTL) and polymorphisms of telomere length-associated genes TERT (rs2736098), TERT-CLPTM1L (rs401681), TRF1 (rs1545827, rs10107605) and TNKS2 (rs10509637, rs10509639) in patients with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). Materials and methods The study consisted of 300 patients with LSCC and 369 healthy control subjects. Genotyping and relative LTL measuring were carried out using qPCR. Results Relative LTL was statistically significantly shorter in the G3 (tumor differentiation grade) subgroup of patients with LSCC compared to the G1 and G2 subgroups. Significant differences were found in genotype distributions of TERT rs401681 and TNKS2 rs10509639 between the study groups. TERT rs401681 C/T and T/T genotypes were associated with approximately 30% decreased odds of LSCC development. Conclusion LTL was shorter in the G3 subgroup compared to the G2 and G1 subgroups of LSCC patients. TERT rs401681 and its C/T and T/T genotypes were associated with decreased odds of overall LSCC development.

Abstract

We describe the filtering and analysis software running in the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) Run II Level-3 trigger, as well as the client- and event-driven data hub system. These systems constitute critical components of the data acquisition system of the CDF detector. The Level-3 trigger is responsible for reconstructing the events and forming the final trigger decision. The consumer-server/logger (CSL) system receives the accepted physics events from multiple connections and writes them to disk in multiple streams, while distributing them to online analysis programs (consumers). Since 2001, the system has been running successfully at high throughput rates: the Level-3 trigger reduces the event rate from 350 Hz to about 100 Hz with an average event size of 150 kB, while the CSL is able to process up to 22 MB/s of constant event logging. We describe these systems in detail and report on their current performance. We briefly outline upgrade plans for the remainder of Tevatron Run II.
