Over the past 35 years, the dance domain has adopted sports medicine as a key driver of professional practice. However, similar to limitations identified within sport, research is yet to achieve its full translational potential within applied settings. This "Viewpoints" paper begins to identify and unpick key philosophical and methodological aspects, with the view to stimulate discussion in this rapidly growing and developing domain. First, we outline a pragmatic philosophy that underpins expert professional practice as a basis to evaluate research. Second, we critically appraise study design characteristics to exemplify a gap between accepted scientific research protocols and professional needs within applied settings. Third, we comment on recommendations/insights made within the literature against the requirements and practices of professionals. Finally, based on this appraisal we suggest an exemplar new line of research that draws upon a pragmatic philosophy; namely, motor skill refinement. In enacting these 'new moves', we look forward to increased collaboration between practitioners and academics to fully realise a strong applied evidence-base. This task will not be easy, as with any interdisciplinary research, and should draw upon interdisciplinary expertise to do so. Hopefully our brief comments will provide a stimulus for further discussion, planning and future action.

Based on emerging literature on the important role of self-regulation in supporting learning, policy makers have made efforts to include self-regulation skills in practice and policy documents worldwide. Despite these efforts, there is limited understanding of what self-regulation is and how best to support these skills in the day-to-day life of early years classrooms. Thus, there is a need to systematically analyse and examine these efforts. This research directly responds to this need by examining the ways self-regulation is discussed and promoted in early childhood curriculum frameworks in Canada. The impact of this research involves changed thinking that will evolve through improved clarity in defining and fostering self-regulation.

Objective Understanding future population needs is key for informing stroke service planning. This study aims to evaluate scenarios for future trends in stroke age-specific incidence and case fatality, and estimate their impact on projected stroke and poststroke dementia prevalence in Ireland.Design This is an epidemiological modelling study based on a probabilistic Markov model. We extrapolated trends in age-specific stroke incidence and case fatality from 1990 to 2019 and applied these to 2016 to 2046. We defined trend scenarios based on stability and low and high decline, broadly based on the lower and upper bounds of evidence for trends to date. We also examined nonlinear trends involving decelerating decline over time and varying trends by age.Setting/participants The study is conducted on the Irish population aged 40–89 years in the period 2022–2046. We used multiple data sources, including systematic review and observational evidence.Interventions Not applicable.Primary and secondary outcome measures We projected the incidence and prevalence of stroke (International Classification of Disease (ICD) codes I60–I61, I63–I64), poststroke dementia (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-V) criteria) and poststroke disability (modified Rankin Scale 3–5).Results The stable scenario indicated a projected 85 834 stroke survivors in 2046 (95% uncertainty interval (UI)=82 366–89 655), an increase of 45.7% from 2022. Assuming a high incidence decline and low case-fatality decline indicated a 5.4% increase in prevalence. Intermediate scenarios based on lower rates of decline, or decline rates slowing over time, implied an increase between 25.8% and 40.3%. Results did not differ substantially when we varied trends by age.In the stable scenario, we projected 16 978 poststroke dementia prevalent cases in 2046 (95% UI 14 958–19 157), an increase of 58.9% from 2022. In the high decline scenario, the increase would be 24.5%, with intermediate scenarios implying an increase between 41.3% and 56.3%.Conclusions Future stroke healthcare needs will vary substantially depending on epidemiological trends. There is an urgent need to both invest in prevention strategies and plan for likely increases in future stroke care needs.

ABSTRACT Coral reefs worldwide are threatened by increasing ocean temperatures because of the sensitivity of the coral‐algal symbiosis to thermal stress. Reef‐building corals form symbiotic relationships with dinoflagellates (family Symbiodiniaceae), including those species which acquire their initial symbiont complement predominately from their parents. Changes in the composition of symbiont communities, through the mechanisms of symbiont shuffling or switching, can modulate the host's thermal limits. However, the role of shuffling in coral acclimatization to heat is understudied in coral offspring and to date has largely focused on the adults. To quantify potential fitness benefits and consequences of changes in symbiont communities under a simulated heatwave in coral early life‐history stages, we exposed larvae and juveniles of the widespread, vertically transmitting coral, Montipora digitata, to heat stress (32°C) and tracked changes in their growth, survival, photosynthetic efficiency, and symbiont community composition over time relative to controls. We found negative impacts from warming in all fitness‐related traits, which varied significantly among larval families and across life‐history stages. Larvae that survived heat exposure exhibited changes in symbiont communities that favored symbionts that are canonically more stress tolerant. Compared to larvae, juveniles showed more rapid mortality under heat stress and their symbiont communities were largely fixed regardless of temperature treatment, suggesting an inability to alter their symbiont community as an acclimatory response to heat stress. Taken together, these findings suggest that capacity for symbiont shuffling may be modified through ontogeny, and that the juvenile life stage may be less flexible and more at risk from climate warming in this species.

Sertoli cell tumors are a rare type of sex-cord stromal tumor. We present a case of a thirteen-year-old male presenting with 2–3 months of fevers and twenty-pound weight loss. Evaluation revealed leukocytosis, anemia, elevated systemic inflammatory markers and a negative infectious disease evaluation. An evaluation for malignancy revealed an incidental testicular mass. A radical orchiectomy lead to prompt resolution of fevers, leukocytosis, and elevated systemic inflammatory markers. Final pathology was consistent with a Sertoli cell tumor. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of a Sertoli cell tumor presenting with fever, leukocytosis, and weight loss.

This work presents a novel compact two-port Vivaldi Non-uniform Slot MIMO Antenna (VNSMA) to overcome the challenges of traditional ultra-wideband (UWB) antennas, such as large size, limited bandwidth (BW), high mutual coupling, and suboptimal performance in wearable devices. Designed based on Vivaldi non-uniform slot profile antenna (VNSPA) theory, this antenna offers superior performance metrics and significantly advances wearable antenna technology. The novelty of this work is investigating different positions for the two compact UWB Vivaldi nonuniform Antennas (VNSAs) to get better performance with smaller sizes, wider impedance matching BW, and lower mutual coupling (MC) where side by side at an angle of 180ᵒ is determined to be the best configuration. Detailed parametric studies were performed on this configuration for better performance, where the MC was further reduced by etching the ground plane with a vertical slot between the two antennas and L slots around the Microstrip to Slot (M/S) transition, respectively. Furthermore, BW and gain enhancements were obtained by etching exponential tapered and triangular slots at its two edges. Using the Finite Integration Technique (FIT), Computer Simulation Technology (CST) software is used for the simulations in this work. The VNSMA is tested on a CST Gustav human phantom and gives excellent results with low specific absorption rate (SAR) values at several UWB frequencies. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the gross motor skills of children with a chronic physical illness with those of their healthy peers. Methods: Data for children with a chronic physical illness come from the Multimorbidity in Children and Youth Across the Life Course study, and data from children without a physical illness come from the Health Outcomes and Physical Activity in Preschoolers study. Multimorbidity in Children and Youth Across the Life Course and Health Outcomes and Physical Activity in Preschoolers included children ages 3–5 years and administered the Peabody Development Motor Scales-second edition. Participants were sex and age matched (20 male and 15 female pairs; Mage = 54.03 [9.5] mo). Results: Gross motor skills scores were "below average" for 47% of children with a physical illness compared with 9% of children without a physical illness (P =.003). Matched-paired t tests detected significant differences in total gross motor scores (dz = −0.35), locomotor (dz = −0.31), and object control (dz = −0.39) scores, with healthy children exhibiting better motor skills, and no significant difference in stationary scores (dz = −0.19). Conclusions: This skill gap may increase burden on children with physical illness and future research should assess gross motor skills longitudinally to establish whether the gap widens with age. BACKGROUND: Intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring is widely practiced, but the indications are incompletely developed, and guidelines are poorly followed. OBJECTIVE: To study the monitoring practices of an established expert panel (the clinical working group from the Seattle International Brain Injury Consensus Conference effort) to examine the match between monitoring guidelines and their clinical decision-making and offer guidance for clinicians considering monitor insertion. METHODS: We polled the 42 Seattle International Brain Injury Consensus Conference panel members ICP monitoring decisions for virtual patients, using matrices of presenting signs (Glasgow Coma Scale [GCS] total or GCS motor, pupillary examination, and computed tomography diagnosis). Monitor insertion decisions were yes, no, or unsure (traffic light approach). We analyzed their responses for weighting of the presenting signs in decision-making using univariate regression. RESULTS: Heatmaps constructed from the choices of 41 panel members revealed wider ICP monitor use than predicted by guidelines. Clinical examination (GCS) was by far the most important characteristic and differed from guidelines in being nonlinear. The modified Marshall computed tomography classification was second and pupils third. We constructed a heatmap and listed the main clinical determinants representing 80% ICP monitor insertion consensus for our recommendations. CONCLUSION: Candidacy for ICP monitoring exceeds published indicators for monitor insertion, suggesting the clinical perception that the value of ICP data is greater than simply detecting and monitoring severe intracranial hypertension. Monitor insertion heatmaps are offered as potential guidance for ICP monitor insertion and to stimulate research into what actually drives monitor insertion in unconstrained, real-world conditions.

Distinct CD4+ T cell epitopes have been associated with spontaneous control of HIV-1 replication, but analysis of antigen-dependent factors that influence epitope selection is lacking. To examine these factors, we used a cell-free antigen processing system that incorporates soluble HLA-DR (DR1), HLA-DM (DM), cathepsins, and full-length protein antigens for epitope identification by LC-MS/MS. HIV-1 Gag, Pol, Env, Vif, Tat, Rev, and Nef were examined using this system. We identified 35 novel epitopes, including glycopeptides. Epitopes from smaller HIV-1 proteins mapped to regions of low protein stability and higher solvent accessibility. HIV-1 antigens associated with limited CD4+ T cell responses were processed efficiently, while some protective epitopes were inefficiently processed. 55% of epitopes obtained from cell-free processing induced memory CD4+ T cell responses in HIV-1+ donors, including eight of 19 novel epitopes tested. Thus, an in vitro processing system utilizing the components of Class II processing reveals factors influencing epitope selection of HIV-1 and represents an approach to understanding epitope selection from non-HIV-1 antigens.

In recent years, microwave imaging has attracted much attention and offers several advantages over existing imaging systems. It allows for a thorough examination of biological tissues, making it possible to identify changes in their shape and pinpoint their exact locations. One exciting development in this field is ultra-wideband (UWB) microwave imaging, which delivers superior results while using radiation that is not harmful. Antennas are a crucial part of UWB systems and require careful optimization, especially considering their proximity to the human body. Various factors need to be considered when designing antennas, including the choice of materials and dimensions, operational bandwidth, the impact of the human body on antenna performance, and the dynamics of short-pulse propagation. Recent research has focused on improving electromagnetic sensors used in these systems, whether as standalone units or as part of antenna arrays. This paper aims to comprehensively review significant advancements in high-performance UWB antenna sensors used in microwave imaging systems utilized for breast cancer detection.

This paper introduces a novel Vivaldi Tapered Slot Antenna (VTSA) designed for wearable Ultra-Wideband (UWB) applications, utilizing a cost-effective FR4 substrate with a thickness of 0.8 mm. The proposed design achieves an 18.81 % size reduction (38.3 mm × 27.06 mm × 0.8 mm), a 36.16 % bandwidth (BW) increase, and a 16.63 % gain improvement compared to a VTSA using a Rogers RO4003C substrate (42.9 mm × 28.28 mm × 0.813 mm). The key contributions of this work include the effective use of the affordable FR4 substrate to achieve high performance, improvements in antenna compactness and BW through innovative slot designs, and the enhancement of gain and radiation pattern stability through the addition of directors to the slots. These modifications significantly boost the antenna's performance while maintaining a compact design. The antenna's suitability for wearable applications was validated through testing on flat and curved human phantoms made of skin, fat, and muscle, showing low Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) values across the UWB spectrum, confirming its safety for body-centric use. Measured results include S11 values below -10.56 dB over the 3.66–20.42 GHz range, a peak gain of 8.1 dBi, stable radiation patterns, and an average group delay of 0.83 ns. Simulations using Computer Simulation Technology (CST) were validated by experimental testing, demonstrating the antenna's potential for wearable and body-centric applications.

In this multiple case study, the researchers examined the impact of a short-term canine-assisted literacy program on reading engagement and literacy growth for seven second-grade students. Current research findings on canine-assisted literacy programs are promising. Reading to a dog is perceived as an enjoyable and motivating experience for young readers and contributes to improved reading skills. To recruit participants, the researchers asked every second-grade teacher to identify one student who was struggling as a reader. All participants struggled with confidence as readers. The program was limited to one school term and consisted of weekly sessions in which the students brought a self-selected book to read to a therapy dog in the presence of a trained handler. Data sources were comprised of pre and post student interviews, teacher interviews, parental questionnaires, and systematic observations of the child-animal interactions and reading behaviors. A student interview and parental questionnaire were also completed four months after the program. The varied data sources suggested that the program supported children's literacy development by providing sustained time for students to engage in appropriate and meaningful reading activities. Specifically, the students developed self-confidence as readers. Although the children interacted with the dog in different ways, all sources revealed a positive, emotional response to the animal and the overall experience, which extended beyond the duration of the program. The promising results of this study contribute to the growing body of evidence asserting the advantages of canine-assisted reading programs.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent, persistent, and costly mental health condition. The internet is an increasingly popular source for information related to ADHD. With a nationally representative sample (2018 NSCH), we aimed to separate individual- and state-level effects to examine inequities in ADHD diagnoses. We extracted state-level relative search volumes using "ADHD," "ADHD treatment," "ADHD medication," and "ADHD therapy" from Google Trends, and sociodemographic and clinical variables from the 2018 National Survey of Children's Health (N = 26,835). We examined state variation in ADHD-related information-seeking and applied multilevel modeling to examine associations among individual-level race/ethnicity, state-level information-seeking patterns, and ADHD diagnoses. Online information seeking related to ADHD varies by state and search term. Individual-level racial/ethnic background and state-level information-seeking patterns were associated with ADHD diagnoses; however, their cross-level interaction was not significant. This study adds to the strong body of evidence documenting geographical variation and diagnostic disparity in mental health and the growing literature on the impact of the digital divide on population health, indicating an urgent need for addressing inequities in mental health care. Increasing public interest in and access to empirically supported online information may increase access to care, especially among people of color.

Abstract Screening a transposon‐mutagenized soybean population led to the discovery of a recessively inherited chlorotic phenotype. This “y24” phenotype results in smaller stature, weaker stems, and a smaller root system. Genome sequencing identified 15 candidate genes with mutations likely to result in a loss of function. Amplicon sequencing of a segregating population was then used to narrow the list to a single candidate mutation, a single‐base change in Glyma.07G102300 that disrupts splicing of the second intron. Single cell transcriptomic profiling indicates that this gene is expressed primarily in mesophyll cells, and RNA sequencing data indicate that it is upregulated in germinating seedlings by cold stress. Previous studies have shown that mutations to Os05g34040, the rice ortholog of Glyma.07G102300, produced a chlorotic phenotype that was more pronounced in cool temperatures. Growing soybean y24 mutants at lower temperatures also resulted in a more severe phenotype. In addition, transgenic expression of wild‐type Glyma.07G102300 in the knockout mutant of the Arabidopsis ortholog At4930720 rescues the chlorotic phenotype, further supporting the hypothesis that the mutation in Glyma.07G102300 is causal of the y24 phenotype. The variant analysis strategy used to identify the genes underlying this phenotype provides a template for the study of other soybean mutants.

ABSTRACTWhen people talk about their healthcare experience, compassion is often a common ingredient in the stories they share. After a decade of healthcare reforms and research on compassion, the experience of receiving compassionate care has been shown to be important to patients and their families. Yet, there is little guidance to inform compassionate practice in the context of providing mental health care. In this article, the authors suggest three things that mental health nurses can use in their practice to demonstrate compassion.

ABSTRACT Objective: To identify the conditions that interfere with the implementation of the Advanced Access model in primary health care. Method: This is an implementation research that used the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR). The CFIR provides a classification of factors that affect the implementation of a technology and comprises five domains: characteristics of the intervention, external environment, internal environment, individuals, and process. The study setting included 13 Health Units in the southern region of the city of São Paulo-SP. 39 health professionals and 10 managers participated. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews. These were recorded and transcribed, and the text data was coded based on pre-established codes derived from the CFIR domains. Results: Four categories were found that impacted the implementation of the AA model in services: 1) Characteristics of the Advanced Access model that impacted implementation; 2) Organization of the health sector and the Advanced Access model; 3) Characteristics of the individuals involved in the innovation; and 4) The planning and leadership model for implementation. Final Considerations: The social, structural, and professional conditions in the municipality of São Paulo made it difficult to implement the AA model. The implementation research supported the process of improving access in the health units studied and provided evidence of what helped and what hindered the restructuring of the access model in these places.

ObjectivesOur understanding of blunt cerebrovascular injury (BCVI) has changed significantly in recent decades, resulting in a heterogeneous description of diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes in the literature which is not suitable for data pooling. Therefore, we endeavored to develop a core outcome set (COS) to help guide future BCVI research and overcome the challenge of heterogeneous outcomes reporting.MethodsAfter a review of landmark BCVI publications, content experts were invited to participate in a modified Delphi study. For round 1, participants submitted a list of proposed core outcomes. In subsequent rounds, panelists used a 9-point Likert scale to score the proposed outcomes for importance.
