Abstract

We report the first search result for the flux of astrophysical electron antineutrinos for energies ${ \mathcal O }(10)\,\mathrm{MeV}$ in the gadolinium-loaded Super-Kamiokande (SK) detector. In 2020 June, gadolinium was introduced to the ultrapure water of the SK detector in order to detect neutrons more efficiently. In this new experimental phase, SK-Gd, we can search for electron antineutrinos via inverse beta decay with efficient background rejection thanks to the high efficiency of the neutron tagging technique. In this paper, we report the result for the initial stage of SK-Gd, during 2020 August 26, and 2022 June 1 with a 22.5 × 552 kton · day exposure at 0.01% Gd mass concentration. No significant excess over the expected background in the observed events is found for the neutrino energies below 31.3 MeV. Thus, the flux upper limits are placed at the 90% confidence level. The limits and sensitivities are already comparable with the previous SK result with pure water (22.5 × 2970 kton · day) owing to the enhanced neutron tagging. Operation with Gd increased to 0.03% started in 2022 June.

2. Spin Relaxation and Diffusion in Monolayer 1T'-WTe$_2$ from First-Principles

Abstract

Understanding spin relaxation in topological systems such as quantum spin-hall (QSH) insulator is critical for realizing coherent transport at high temperature. WTe$_{2}$, known as a QSH insulator with a high transition temperature of 100K, is an important test-bed of unveiling spin relaxation mechanism in topological materials. In this work, we employ our recently-developed \emph{ab initio} density-matrix dynamics approach to investigate spin relaxation mechanism, and calculate spin lifetime and diffusion length of monolayer 1T'-WTe$_{2}$, at finite temperature under an external electric field. We found the spin lifetime of electrons have the largest anisotropy when measuring along the canted-spin-texture direction. Moreover, we found an opposite trend between spin and carrier relaxation against applied electric field. Most importantly, the relaxation mechanism under intermediate electric field around 1V/nm can not be explained by either Eillot-Yafet or Dyakonov-Perel models, which highlights the generality of our \emph{ab initio} density-matrix framework. We then proposed analytical models to explain its mechanism and compare well with \emph{ab initio} results at small and large electric field. We predict that spin lifetime and spin diffusion length of bulk-state electrons are $\sim$1 ps and $\sim$30 nm at room temperature respectively, suggesting its promise for spintronic applications.

3. Si-waveguide-based optical power monitoring of 2$\times$2 Mach$\unicode{x2013}$Zehnder interferometer based on InGaAsP/Si hybrid MOS optical phase shifter

Abstract

Transparent in-line optical power monitoring in Si programmable photonic integrated circuits (PICs) is indispensable for calibrating integrated optical devices such as optical switches and resonators. A Si waveguide (WG) photodetector (PD) based on defect-mediated photodetection is a promising candidate for a transparent in-line optical power monitor owing to its simplicity and ease of integration with a fully complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS)-compatible process. Here, we propose a simple optical power monitoring scheme for a 2$\times$2 Mach$\unicode{x2013}$Zehnder interferometer (MZI) optical switch based on InGaAsP/Si hybrid MOS optical phase shifters. In the proposed scheme, a low-doped p-type Si WG PD with a response time of microseconds is utilized as a transparent in-line optical power monitor and the ground terminal of the MOS optical phase shifter is shared with that of the Si WG PD to enable the simple monitoring of the output optical power of the MZI. Based on this scheme, we experimentally demonstrate that the output optical power of a 2$\times$2 MZI can be simply monitored by applying a bias voltage to the Si slabs formed at the output WGs of the MZI without excess optical insertion loss.

Abstract

Knowing the printer model used to print a given document may provide a crucial lead towards identifying counterfeits or conversely verifying the validity of a real document. Inkjet printers produce probabilistic droplet patterns that appear to be distinct for each printer model and as such we investigate the utilization of droplet characteristics including frequency domain features extracted from printed document scans for the classification of the underlying printer model. We collect and publish a dataset of high resolution document scans and show that our extracted features are informative enough to enable a neural network to distinguish not only the printer manufacturer, but also individual printer models., Comment: to be published in 2024 International Joint Conference on Neural Networks (IJCNN)

Abstract

We propose a novel architecture design for video prediction in order to utilize procedural domain knowledge directly as part of the computational graph of data-driven models. On the basis of new challenging scenarios we show that state-of-the-art video predictors struggle in complex dynamical settings, and highlight that the introduction of prior process knowledge makes their learning problem feasible. Abstract

We propose a general way to integrate procedural knowledge of a domain into deep learning models. We apply it to the case of video prediction, building on top of object-centric deep models and show that this leads to a better performance than using data-driven models alone. We develop an architecture that facilitates latent space disentanglement in order to use the integrated procedural knowledge, and establish a setup that allows the model to learn the procedural interface in the latent space using the downstream task of video prediction. We contrast the performance to a state-of-the-art data-driven approach and show that problems where purely data-driven approaches struggle can be handled by using knowledge about the domain, providing an alternative to simply collecting more data., Comment: Published in 2023 IEEE/CVF International Conference on Computer Vision Workshops (ICCVW)

Abstract

We explore the bound neutrons decay into invisible particles (e.g., $n\rightarrow 3 \nu$ or $nn \rightarrow 2 \nu$) in the JUNO liquid scintillator detector. The invisible decay includes two decay modes: $ n \rightarrow { inv} $ and $ nn \rightarrow { inv} $. The invisible decays of $s$-shell neutrons in $^{12}{\rm C}$ will leave a highly excited residual nucleus. Subsequently, some de-excitation modes of the excited residual nuclei can produce a time- and space-correlated triple coincidence signal in the JUNO detector. Based on a full Monte Carlo simulation informed with the latest available data, we estimate all backgrounds, including inverse beta decay events of the reactor antineutrino $\bar{\nu}_e$, natural radioactivity, cosmogenic isotopes and neutral current interactions of atmospheric neutrinos. Pulse shape discrimination and multivariate analysis techniques are employed to further suppress backgrounds. With two years of exposure, JUNO is expected to give an order of magnitude improvement compared to the current best limits. After 10 years of data taking, the JUNO expected sensitivities at a 90% confidence level are $\tau/B( n \rightarrow { inv} ) > 5.0 \times 10^{31} \, {\rm yr}$ and $\tau/B( nn \rightarrow { inv} ) > 1.4 \times 10^{32} \, {\rm yr}$., Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables

Abstract

The pyrochlore oxide Pb2Re2O7-{\delta} (PRO) is a candidate spin-orbit-coupled metal (SOCM) that exhibits a structural phase transition with inversion symmetry breaking. In this study, we report the results of detailed X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements on single crystals of PRO to clarify the crystal structure below the phase transition temperature at Ts = 300 K. In the XRD patterns, a clear peak splitting is observed below Ts, indicating a cubic to tetragonal transition. Based on the group-subgroup relationship and the observed reflection conditions, the space group of the low-temperature phase is proposed to be I4122, which agrees with optical second harmonic generation measurements. This space group is the same as that of the lowest temperature structure of the analogous SOCM Cd2Re2O7 (CRO), which is realized by the emergence of odd-parity multipole order. Abstract

Neutrinos from very nearby supernovae, such as Betelgeuse, are expected to generate more than ten million events over 10\,s in Super-Kamokande (SK). At such large event rates, the buffers of the SK analog-to-digital conversion board (QBEE) will overflow, causing random loss of data that is critical for understanding the dynamics of the supernova explosion mechanism. In order to solve this problem, two new DAQ modules were developed to aid in the observation of very nearby supernovae. The first of these, the SN module, is designed to save only the number of hit PMTs during a supernova burst and the second, the Veto module, prescales the high rate neutrino events to prevent the QBEE from overflowing based on information from the SN module. In the event of a very nearby supernova, these modules allow SK to reconstruct the time evolution of the neutrino event rate from beginning to end using both QBEE and SN module data. This paper presents the development and testing of these modules together with an analysis of supernova-like data generated with a flashing laser diode. We demonstrate that the Veto module successfully prevents DAQ overflows for Betelgeuse-like supernovae as well as the long-term stability of the new modules. During normal running the Veto module is found to issue DAQ vetos a few times per month resulting in a total dead time less than 1\,ms, and does not influence ordinary operations. Additionally, using simulation data we find that supernovae closer than 800~pc will trigger Veto module resulting in a prescaling of the observed neutrino data., Comment: 28 pages, 18 figures. Abstract

In this study, we performed high-resolution near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy (R = 28,000; ${\lambda} = 0.90$-1.35 ${\mu}$m) with a high signal-to-noise ratio on HD 200775, a very young (${\sim}$0.1 Myr old) and massive intermediate-mass star (a binary star with a mass of about 10 $M_{\odot}$ each) with a protoplanetary disk. The obtained spectra show eight forbidden lines of three elements: two of [S II] (10289 and 10323 {\AA}), two of [N I] (10400 and 10410 {\AA}), and four of [Fe II] (12570, 12946, 12981, and 13209 {\AA}). This is the first time that the [N I] lines are detected in a young stellar object with a doublet deblended. Gaussian fitting of the spectra indicates that all line profiles have low-velocity components and exhibit blueshifted features, suggesting that all lines originate from the disk winds (magnetohydrodynamic disk wind and/or photoevaporative wind). Based on the fit, the [N I] and [Fe II] lines are categorized into narrow components, while the [S II] lines are at the boundary between broad and narrow components. These forbidden lines are suggested to be very promising disk wind tracers among the existing ones because they are in the NIR-wavelength range, which can be observed from early stages with high sensitivities. Among these lines, [N I] lines would be a rather powerful probe for deriving the basic physical parameters of disk wind gases. Abstract

We present the results of the charge ratio ($R$) and polarization ($P^{\mu}_{0}$) measurements using the decay electron events collected from 2008 September to 2022 June by the Super-Kamiokande detector. Because of its underground location and long operation, we performed high precision measurements by accumulating cosmic-ray muons. We measured the muon charge ratio to be $R=1.32 \pm 0.02$ $(\mathrm{stat.}{+}\mathrm{syst.})$ at $E_{\mu}\cos \theta_{\mathrm{Zenith}}=0.7^{+0.3}_{-0.2}$ $\mathrm{TeV}$, where $E_{\mu}$ is the muon energy and $\theta_{\mathrm{Zenith}}$ is the zenith angle of incoming cosmic-ray muons. This result is consistent with the Honda flux model while this suggests a tension with the $\pi K$ model of $1.9\sigma$. We also measured the muon polarization at the production location to be $P^{\mu}_{0}=0.52 \pm 0.02$ $(\mathrm{stat.}{+}\mathrm{syst.})$ at the muon momentum of $0.9^{+0.6}_{-0.1}$ $\mathrm{TeV}/c$ at the surface of the mountain; this also suggests a tension with the Honda flux model of $1.5\sigma$. This is the most precise measurement ever to experimentally determine the cosmic-ray muon polarization near $1~\mathrm{TeV}/c$. Abstract

Photonic integrated circuits are emerging as a promising platform for accelerating matrix multiplications in deep learning, leveraging the inherent parallel nature of light. Although various schemes have been proposed and demonstrated to realize such photonic matrix accelerators, the in-situ training of artificial neural networks using photonic accelerators remains challenging due to the difficulty of direct on-chip backpropagation on a photonic chip. In this work, we propose a silicon microring resonator (MRR) optical crossbar array with a symmetric structure that allows for simple on-chip backpropagation, potentially enabling the acceleration of both the inference and training phases of deep learning. We demonstrate a $4 \times 4$ circuit on a Si-on-insulator (SOI) platform and use it to perform inference tasks of a simple neural network for classifying Iris flowers, achieving a classification accuracy of 93.3%. Subsequently, we train the neural network using simulated on-chip backpropagation and achieve an accuracy of 91.1% in the same inference task after training. Furthermore, we simulate a convolutional neural network (CNN) for handwritten digit recognition, using a $9 \times 9$ MRR crossbar array to perform the convolution operations. This work contributes to the realization of compact and energy-efficient photonic accelerators for deep learning.

Abstract

We present a data reduction pipeline written in Python for data obtained with the near-infrared cross-dispersed echelle spectrograph, WINERED, which yields a 0.91$-$1.35 $\mu$m spectrum with the resolving power of $R_{\text{max}} \equiv \lambda / \Delta \lambda = 28,000$ or 70,000 depending on the observing mode. The pipeline was developed to efficiently extract the spectrum from the raw data with high quality. It comprises two modes: the calibration and the science mode. The calibration mode automatically produces the flat-fielding image, bad pixel map, echellogram distortion map and the dispersion solution from the set of the calibration data. Using calibration images and parameters, the science data of astronomical objects can be reduced automatically using the science mode. The science mode is also used for the real-time quick look at the data during observations. An example of the spectra reduced with WARP is presented. Abstract

The theoretically observable limit of electron density distribution by single-crystal X-ray diffraction is discussed. When F_{orb} and {\delta}F are defined as, respectively, the partial structure factor for an orbital and the deviation of the observed F from the true F, the accuracy of electron density attributable to F_{orb} is chiefly determined by the number of reflections satisfying the condition F_{orb}/F > {\delta}F/F. Since F_{orb}/F, which is generally small for crystals with large F(0,0,0), is constant under a given set of experimental conditions, {\delta}F/F must be reduced to increase the number of reflections satisfying F_{orb}/F > {\delta}F/F. The present paper demonstrates how to reduce {\delta}F mathematically and experimentally, and the following topics are covered: the Poisson statistics, accumulation of errors in the data collection and reduction procedure, multiple diffraction, conversion error from F^2 to F in refinement programs, which is unavoidable when the input quantities have different dimension from F, weighting of reflections, and tips. Abstract

An analysis of solar neutrino data from the fourth phase of Super-Kamiokande~(SK-IV) from October 2008 to May 2018 is performed and the results are presented. The observation time of the data set of SK-IV corresponds to $2970$~days and the total live time for all four phases is $5805$~days. For more precise solar neutrino measurements, several improvements are applied in this analysis: lowering the data acquisition threshold in May 2015, further reduction of the spallation background using neutron clustering events, precise energy reconstruction considering the time variation of the PMT gain. The observed number of solar neutrino events in $3.49$--$19.49$ MeV electron kinetic energy region during SK-IV is $65,443^{+390}_{-388}\,(\mathrm{stat.})\pm 925\,(\mathrm{syst.})$ events. Corresponding $\mathrm{^{8}B}$ solar neutrino flux is $(2.314 \pm 0.014\, \rm{(stat.)} \pm 0.040 \, \rm{(syst.)}) \times 10^{6}~\mathrm{cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}}$, assuming a pure electron-neutrino flavor component without neutrino oscillations. The flux combined with all SK phases up to SK-IV is $(2.336 \pm 0.011\, \rm{(stat.)} \pm 0.043 \, \rm{(syst.)}) \times 10^{6}~\mathrm{cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}}$. Based on the neutrino oscillation analysis from all solar experiments, including the SK $5805$~days data set, the best-fit neutrino oscillation parameters are $\rm{sin^{2} \theta_{12,\,solar}} = 0.306 \pm 0.013 $ and $\Delta m^{2}_{21,\,\mathrm{solar}} = (6.10^{+ 0.95}_{-0.81}) \times 10^{-5}~\rm{eV}^{2}$, with a deviation of about 1.5$\sigma$ from the $\Delta m^{2}_{21}$ parameter obtained by KamLAND. The best-fit neutrino oscillation parameters obtained from all solar experiments and KamLAND are $\sin^{2} \theta_{12,\,\mathrm{global}} = 0.307 \pm 0.012 $ and $\Delta m^{2}_{21,\,\mathrm{global}} = (7.50^{+ 0.19}_{-0.18}) \times 10^{-5}~\rm{eV}^{2}$., Comment: 47 pages, 61 figures

Abstract

The electronic properties of ScPdGe and ScPdSi, crystallizing in the hexagonal ZrNiAl and orthorhombic TiNiSi structures, respectively, are investigated. ScPdGe and ScPdSi are found to show bulk superconductivity below 0.9 and 1.7 K, respectively, based on electrical resistivity and heat capacity data measured using synthesized polycrystalline samples. First principles calculations indicate the presence of large contributions of Sc 3d and Pd 4d electrons at the Fermi energy in both materials. The electronic properties and electronic states of these materials are discussed in comparison with those of several superconductors containing scandium and a 4d transition metal element., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in J. Abstract

We investigated the optical properties of single crystals of one-dimensional telluride Ta4SiTe4, which shows high thermoelectric performance below room temperature. Optical conductivity estimated from reflectivity spectra indicates the presence of a small energy gap of 0.1-0.15 eV at the Fermi energy. At the lowest energy, optical conductivity along the Ta4SiTe4 chain is an order of magnitude higher than that perpendicular to this direction, reflecting the anisotropic electron conduction in Ta4SiTe4. These results indicate that coexistence of a very small band gap and anisotropic electron conduction is a promising strategy to develop a high-performance thermoelectric material for low temperature applications., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures
