Abstract

Preceding a core-collapse supernova (CCSN), various processes produce an increasing amount of neutrinos of all flavors characterized by mounting energies from the interior of massive stars. Among them, the electron antineutrinos are potentially detectable by terrestrial neutrino experiments such as KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande (SK) via inverse beta decay interactions. Once these pre-supernova (pre-SN) neutrinos are observed, an early warning of the upcoming CCSN can be provided. In light of this, KamLAND and SK, both located in the Kamioka mine in Japan, have been monitoring pre-SN neutrinos since 2015 and 2021, respectively. Recently, we performed a joint study between KamLAND and SK on pre-SN neutrino detection. A pre-SN alert system combining the KamLAND detector and the SK detector was developed and put into operation, which can provide a supernova alert to the astrophysics community. Fully leveraging the complementary properties of these two detectors, the combined alert is expected to resolve a pre-SN neutrino signal from a 15 M _⊙ star within 510 pc of the Earth at a significance level corresponding to a false alarm rate of no more than 1 per century. For a Betelgeuse-like model with optimistic parameters, it can provide early warnings up to 12 hr in advance.

Abstract

Among multimessenger observations of the next Galactic core-collapse supernova, Super-Kamiokande (SK) plays a critical role in detecting the emitted supernova neutrinos, determining the direction to the supernova (SN), and notifying the astronomical community of these observations in advance of the optical signal. In 2022, SK has increased the gadolinium dissolved in its water target (SK-Gd) and has achieved a Gd concentration of 0.033%, resulting in enhanced neutron detection capability, which in turn enables more accurate determination of the supernova direction. Accordingly, SK-Gd’s real-time supernova monitoring system has been upgraded. SK_SN Notice, a warning system that works together with this monitoring system, was released on 2021 December 13, and is available through GCN Notices. When the monitoring system detects an SN-like burst of events, SK_SN Notice will automatically distribute an alarm with the reconstructed direction to the supernova candidate within a few minutes. In this paper, we present a systematic study of SK-Gd’s response to a simulated Galactic SN. Assuming a supernova situated at 10 kpc, neutrino fluxes from six supernova models are used to characterize SK-Gd’s pointing accuracy using the same tools as the online monitoring system. The pointing accuracy is found to vary from 3° to 7° depending on the models. However, if the supernova is closer than 10 kpc, SK_SN Notice can issue an alarm with three-degree accuracy, which will benefit follow-up observations by optical telescopes with large fields of view.

Abstract

We report the first search result for the flux of astrophysical electron antineutrinos for energies ${ \mathcal O }(10)\,\mathrm{MeV}$ in the gadolinium-loaded Super-Kamiokande (SK) detector. In 2020 June, gadolinium was introduced to the ultrapure water of the SK detector in order to detect neutrons more efficiently. In this new experimental phase, SK-Gd, we can search for electron antineutrinos via inverse beta decay with efficient background rejection thanks to the high efficiency of the neutron tagging technique. In this paper, we report the result for the initial stage of SK-Gd, during 2020 August 26, and 2022 June 1 with a 22.5 × 552 kton · day exposure at 0.01% Gd mass concentration. No significant excess over the expected background in the observed events is found for the neutrino energies below 31.3 MeV. Thus, the flux upper limits are placed at the 90% confidence level. The limits and sensitivities are already comparable with the previous SK result with pure water (22.5 × 2970 kton · day) owing to the enhanced neutron tagging. Operation with Gd increased to 0.03% started in 2022 June.

Abstract

P.A.M. Dirac in 1949 showed that it is possible to construct relativistic dynamic forms starting from the description of the initial state of a given relativistic system in any space-time surface whose distances between two points on this hypersurface has no causal connection. The dynamic evolution corresponds to such a system following a trajectory through this hypersurface. For example, the commonest hypersurface of time t = 0 is our three-dimensional (Euclidean) space. It is invariant by rotations and translations. However, in any transformation of inertial frame of references that involves “boosts”, the time coordinate is modified and, consequently, the hypersurface at t = 0. Other hypersurfaces may be invariant through some kind of “boost”; the hyperplane that is called null-plane is such a hyperplane, defined by x+ = t + z/c, in which c is the speed of light in vacuum, and plays the role of the “time” coordinate in the light-front. The null-plane defined in such a way guarantees that a “boost” in the z direction does not modify the null-plane. Our aim here is to study special relativity under such a transformation of frame of references and see the consequences thereof.

Abstract

We present the development of neutron-tagging techniques in Super-Kamiokande IV using a neural network analysis. The detection efficiency of neutron capture on hydrogen is estimated to be 26%, with a mis-tag rate of 0.016 per neutrino event. The uncertainty of the tagging efficiency is estimated to be 9.0%. Measurement of the tagging efficiency with data from an Americium-Beryllium calibration agrees with this value within 10%. The tagging procedure was performed on 3,244.4 days of SK-IV atmospheric neutrino data, identifying 18,091 neutrons in 26,473 neutrino events. The fitted neutron capture lifetime was measured as 218 \pm 9 \mu s.

Abstract

A search for the neutrinoless quadruple beta decay of 136Xe was conducted with the liquid-xenon detector XMASS-I using 327 kg ×800.0 days of the exposure. The pulse shape discrimination based on the scintillation decay time constant which distinguishes γ-rays including the signal and β-rays was used to enhance the search sensitivity. No significant signal excess was observed from the energy spectrum fitting with precise background evaluation, and we set a lower limit of the half life of 3.7 × 1024 years at 90% confidence level. This is the first experimental constraint of the neutrinoless quadruple beta decay of 136Xe.

Abstract

We study isoscalar (IS) and isovector (IV) densities in Ca40 in comparison with theoretical densities calculated by Skyrme Hatree-Fock (HF) models. The charge symmetry breaking and the charge independence breaking forces are introduced to study the effect on the IV density. The effect of isospin mixing in the ground-state density is examined by using the particle-vibration coupling model taking into account the collective IV giant monopole excitation. We show a clear correlations in the IV density and isospin impurity of Ca40 within the HF and the particle-vibration coupling model. We extract for the first time the experimental information of isospin impurity from the magnitude of IV density.

Abstract

The isovector and isoscalar components of neutron-proton pairing are investigated in the N=Z unstable nuclei of the fp-shell through the two-nucleon transfer reaction (p,3He) in inverse kinematics. The combination of particle and gamma-ray detection with radioactive beams of 56Ni and 52Fe, produced by fragmentation at the GANIL/LISE facility, made it possible to carry out this study for the first time in a closed and an open-shell nucleus in the fp-shell. The transfer cross-sections for ground-state to ground-state (J=0+, T=1) and to the first (J=1+, T=0) state were extracted for both cases together with the transfer cross-section ratios σ(0+,T=1)/σ(1+,T=0). They are compared with second-order distorted-wave born approximation (DWBA) calculations. The enhancement of the ground-state to ground-state pair transfer cross-section close to mid-shell, in 52Fe, points towards a superfluid phase in the isovector channel. For the “deuteron-like” transfer, very low cross-sections to the first (J=1+, T=0) state were observed both for 56Ni(p,3He) and 52Fe(p,3He) and are related to a strong hindrance of this channel due to spin-orbit effect. No evidence for an isoscalar deuteron-like condensate is observed.

Abstract

Na teoria quântica de campos usual, descrita no espaço-tempo de Minkowski, os conceitos de partícula e antipartícula surgem associados aos estados de energia positiva e negativa respectivamente. Nesse artigo focando como público alvo alunos de pós-graduação em Física, discutimos de maneira pedagógica como esses conceitos podem ser ou não transferidos quando fazemos uma mudança de coordenadas, do espaço-tempo de Minkowski para as coordenadas do cone de luz. Concluímos que nessas novas coordenadas temos uma arbitrariedade na escolha, uma vez que o sinal da energia fica atrelado ao sinal da componente longitudinal do momento no cone de luz. Embora haja essa arbitrariedade, a correlação de sinal que existe entre a energia e o momento longitudinal implica profundas consequencias físicas. Momentos positivos implicam energias positivas e momentos negativos implicam energias negativas. Isso significa, por exemplo, que no vácuo quântico da frente de luz não pode haver produção de pares partículas e antipartículas, ao contrário do que ocorre no espaço de Minkowski usual.

Abstract

In amniote limbs, Fibroblast Growth Factor 10 (FGF10) is essential for limb development, but whether this function is broadly conserved in tetrapods and/or involved in adult limb regeneration remains unknown. To tackle this question, we established Fgf10 mutant lines in the newt Pleurodeles waltl which has amazing regenerative ability. While Fgf10 mutant forelimbs develop normally, the hindlimbs fail to develop and downregulate FGF target genes. Despite these developmental defects, Fgf10 mutants were able to regenerate normal hindlimbs rather than recapitulating the embryonic phenotype. Together, our results demonstrate an important role for FGF10 in hindlimb formation, but little or no function in regeneration, suggesting that different mechanisms operate during limb regeneration versus development. Abstract

In this paper, we report the production cross-section of forward photons in the pseudorapidity regions of η>10.94 and 8.99>η>8.81, measured by the LHCf experiment with proton–proton collisions at s=13TeV. The results from the analysis of 0.191nb−1 of data obtained in June 2015 are compared to the predictions of several hadronic interaction models that are used in air-shower simulations for ultra-high-energy cosmic rays. Although none of the models agree perfectly with the data, EPOS-LHC shows the best agreement with the experimental data among the models.

Abstract

An experiment addressing electron capture (EC) decay of hydrogen-like Pm60+142 ions has been conducted at the experimental storage ring (ESR) at GSI. The decay appears to be purely exponential and no modulations were observed. Decay times for about 9000 individual EC decays have been measured by applying the single-ion decay spectroscopy method. Both visually and automatically analysed data can be described by a single exponential decay with decay constants of 0.0126(7)s−1 for automatic analysis and 0.0141(7)s−1 for manual analysis. If a modulation superimposed on the exponential decay curve is assumed, the best fit gives a modulation amplitude of merely 0.019(15), which is compatible with zero and by 4.9 standard deviations smaller than in the original observation which had an amplitude of 0.23(4). Background His-bundle pacing (HBP) and left bundle branch area pacing (LBBAP) have been popular as physiological pacing procedures and, according to previous reports, both can decrease heart failure admission and preserve left ventricular ejection fraction compared to right ventricular pacing. In general, the physiological pacing has different pacing thresholds (e.g. pacing thresholds of His-bundle or left bundle and myocardium), but automatic capture management cannot diagnose these multiple pacing thresholds and automatic adjustments of ventricular pacing output based on automatic ventricular threshold tests may not achieve the appropriate HBP or LBBAP. Especially in HBP, a fixed pacing output is likely to be recommended to ensure the definite HBP, since HBP thresholds tend to increase over the long term. Purpose It has been reported that LBBAP thresholds are maintained lower than HBP thresholds. The aim of this study is to evaluate the safety and appropriateness of automatic capture management via a remote monitoring system in LBBAP patients. Methods Patients who underwent LBBAP from July 2019 to July 2022 were enrolled. The ventricular capture management used a 2x safety margin above the automatic ventricular pacing thresholds and a minimum pacing output of 2 V at 0.4 ms. Pacing thresholds were monitored using telemonitoring every month and pacing waveforms were evaluated during outpatient visits. Results Ninety patients with successful LBBAP were enrolled. LBBAP thresholds, R-wave amplitudes, and pacing impedances at implantation were 0.71±0.17 V at 0.4 ms, 16.4±6.7 mV, and 568±87.6 Ω, respectively, and the pacing QRS width was 128.8±16.8 ms. There was no significant difference between the pacing thresholds at the time of manual measurement during the outpatient visits and automatic measurement during the telemonitoring immediately before those visits, and all differences in pacing thresholds were less than 0.5 V at 0.4 ms. The median observation period was 481 days (range 215.75-685.5 days), and pacing thresholds, pacing outputs, and pacing QRS width at the last follow-up were 0.87 ± 0.30 V at 0.4 ms, 2.06 ± 0.21 V at 0.4 ms, and 129.3 ± 18.1 ms, respectively. One patient of lead dislodgement was detected 17 months after implantation and lead revision was performed. Another patient had a pacing threshold increase of more than 1V, but the function of automatic pacing output adjustment prevented pacing failure and LBBAP was maintained as well. Conclusions Automatic capture managements in LBBAP could be accurately and safety managed with a remote monitoring system.

However, whether this function is broadly conserved in tetrapods and/or involved in adult limb regeneration remains unknown. To tackle this question, we established anFgf10null mutant line in the newtPleurodeles waltlwhich have amazing regenerative ability. WhileFgf10mutant forelimbs develop normally, the hindlimbs exhibit severe digit reduction, fail to ossify the zeugopod, and downregulate FGF target genes likeSall1, Runx1andHoxa11/d11. Despite these developmental defects,Fgf10mutants were able to regenerate near-normal hindlimbs. Together, our results suggest an important role forFgf10in hindlimb digit formation and zeugopod ossification during development, but little or no function in regeneration, suggesting that different mechanisms operate during limb regeneration versus development.
