There is a large and growing number of non-degree credential offerings between a high school diploma and a bachelor's degree, as well as degree programs beyond a bachelor's degree. Nevertheless, research on the financial returns to non-degree credentials and degree-granting programs is often narrow and siloed. To fill this gap, we leverage a national sample of individuals across nine MSAs and four industries to examine the relative financial returns to a variety of non-degree credentials and degree programs. Leveraging fixed-effect models, we explore the relationship between completing a credential or degree and earnings premiums. We find that an associate's, bachelor's, master's and doctorate degree follows a similar model of returns in which the number of schooling years is linearly related to proportional earnings premiums. However, students completing sub-baccalaureate certificates, post-baccalaureate certificates, and non-school credentials appear to get larger financial returns for less time. Furthermore, while the returns to both non-degree credentials and degree granting programs generally favored males over females and non-binary persons, this was not the case for race/ethnicity. Although individuals from Asian and White racial/ethnic groups often maintained an advantage in traditional education settings, Black individuals earned greater premiums from non-school credentials than White individuals, which may represent an opportunity to close racial/ethnic gaps in earnings.

This First Look report presents data on public elementary and secondary education revenues and expenditures at the local education agency (LEA) or school district level for fiscal year (FY) 2022. Specifically, this report includes the following types of school district finance data: (1) revenue, current expenditure, and capital outlay expenditure totals; (2) revenues by source; (3) current expenditures by function and object; (4) revenues and current expenditures per pupil; and (5) revenues and expenditures from COVID-19 Federal Assistance Funds. This First Look report focuses on education revenues and expenditures at the school district level. The finance data used in this report are from the School District Finance Survey (F-33), 2F 3 a component of the Common Core of Data (CCD). The CCD is a group of annual public elementary/secondary data collections administered by NCES. The F-33 survey consists of LEA-level finance data submitted annually to the U.S. Census Bureau (Census Bureau) by state education agencies (SEAs) in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. SEAs report financial data covering services that provide or support prekindergarten through high school for public education for a variety of types of LEAs. These LEAs include regular school districts, independent charter school districts, as well as a substantial number of administrative and operating LEAs that are unlike typical school districts (e.g., education service agencies that provide specialized education services for school districts, such as vocational and other specialized education services for school districts). The purpose of this First Look report is to introduce new data through the presentation of tables containing descriptive information. The selected findings chosen for this report demonstrate the range of information available when using F-33 data files and are not intended to emphasize any particular issue(s).

The X-ray polarization observations made possible with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) offer new ways of probing high-energy emission processes in astrophysical jets from blazars. Here we report on the first X-ray polarization observation of the blazar S4 0954+65 in a high optical and X-ray state. During our multi-wavelength campaign on the source, we detected an optical flare whose peak coincided with the peak of an X-ray flare. This optical-X-ray flare most likely took place in a feature moving along the parsec-scale jet, imaged at 43 GHz by the Very Long Baseline Array. The 43 GHz polarization angle of the moving component underwent a rotation near the time of the flare. In the optical band, prior to the IXPE observation, we measured the polarization angle to be aligned with the jet axis. In contrast, during the optical flare the optical polarization angle was perpendicular to the jet axis; after the flare, it reverted to being parallel to the jet axis. Due to the smooth behavior of the optical polarization angle during the flare, we favor shocks as the main acceleration mechanism. We also infer that the ambient magnetic field lines in the jet were parallel to the jet position angle. The average degree of optical polarization during the IXPE observation was (14.3$\pm$4.1)%. Despite the flare, we only detected an upper limit of 14% (at 3$\sigma$ level) on the X-ray polarization degree; although a reasonable assumption on the X-ray polarization angle results in an upper limit of 8.8% ($3\sigma$). We model the spectral energy distribution (SED) and spectral polarization distribution (SPD) of S4 0954+65 with leptonic (synchrotron self-Compton) and hadronic (proton and pair synchrotron) models. Identifying valuable measurements is one of the main challenges in computational inverse problems, often framed as the optimal experimental design (OED) problem. In this paper, we investigate nonlinear OED within a continuously-indexed design space. This is in contrast to the traditional approaches on selecting experiments from a finite measurement set. This formulation better reflects practical scenarios where measurements are taken continuously across spatial or temporal domains. However, optimizing over a continuously-indexed space introduces computational challenges. To address these, we employ gradient flow and optimal transport techniques, complemented by adaptive strategy for interactive optimization. Numerical results on the Lorenz 63 system and Schr\"odinger equation demonstrate that our solver identifies valuable measurements and achieves improved reconstruction of unknown parameters in inverse problems.

Kagome superconductors AV$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ provide a unique platform for studying the interplay between a variety of electronic orders, including superconductivity, charge density waves, nematic phases and more. Understanding the evolution of the electronic state from the charge density wave to the superconducting transition is essential for unraveling the interplay of charge, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom giving rise to the unusual magnetic properties of these nonmagnetic metals. Previous zero-field and high-field $\mu$SR studies revealed two anomalies in the muon spin relaxation rate, a first change at $T_{CDW} \sim 100$ K and a second steep increase at $T^{*}\sim 40$ K, further enhanced by an applied magnetic field, thus suggesting a contribution of magnetic origin. In this study, we use the avoided level crossing $\mu$SR technique to investigate charge order in near-zero applied field. By tracking the temperature dependence of quadrupolar level-crossing resonances, we examined the evolution of the electric field gradient at V nuclei in the kagome plane. Our results show a significant rearrangement of the charge density starting at $T^{*}$ indicating a transition in the charge distribution, likely electronic in origin, well below $T_{CDW}$. These findings, combined with previous $\mu$SR, STM, and NMR studies, emphasize the intertwined nature of proximate phases in these systems, with the charge rearrangement dominating the additional increase in $\mu$SR relaxation rate below $T^{*}$.

Synchrotron X-ray emission has been detected from nearly a dozen young supernova remnants (SNRs). X-rays of synchrotron origin exhibit linear polarization in a regular, non-randomly oriented magnetic field. The significant polarized X-ray emission from four such SNRs has already been reported on the basis of observations with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). The magnetic-field structure as derived from IXPE observations is radial for Cassiopeia A, Tycho's SNR, and SN 1006, and tangential for RX J1713.7-3946. The latter together with the recent detection of a tangential magnetic field in SNR 1E 0102.2-7219 by the Australia Telescope Compact Array in the radio band shows that tangential magnetic fields can also be present in young SNRs. Thus, the dichotomy in polarization between young and middle-aged SNRs (radial magnetic fields in young SNRs, but tangential magnetic fields in middle-aged SNRs), previously noticed in the radio band, deserves additional attention. The present analysis of IXPE observations determines, for the first time, a magnetic-field structure in the northwestern rim of Vela Jr, also known as RX J0852.0-4622, and provides a new example of a young SNR with a tangential magnetic field., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

X-ray polarization is a unique new probe of the particle acceleration in astrophysical jets made possible through the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer. Here we report on the first dense X-ray polarization monitoring campaign on the blazar Mrk 421. Our observations were accompanied by an even denser radio and optical polarization campaign. We find significant short-timescale variability in both X-ray polarization degree and angle, including a $\sim90^\circ$ angle rotation about the jet axis. We attribute this to random variations of the magnetic field, consistent with the presence of turbulence but also unlikely to be explained by turbulence alone. At the same time, the degree of lower-energy polarization is significantly lower and shows no more than mild variability. Our campaign provides further evidence for a scenario in which energy-stratified shock-acceleration of relativistic electrons, combined with a turbulent magnetic field, is responsible for optical to X-ray synchrotron emission in blazar jets., Comment: 23 pages, including 8 pages of appendices. 12 figures, 3 tables. One of the most challenging problems in the computational study of localization in quantum manybody systems is to capture the effects of rare events, which requires sampling over exponentially many disorder realizations. We implement an efficient procedure on a quantum processor, leveraging quantum parallelism, to efficiently sample over all disorder realizations. We observe localization without disorder in quantum many-body dynamics in one and two dimensions: perturbations do not diffuse even though both the generator of evolution and the initial states are fully translationally invariant. The disorder strength as well as its density can be readily tuned using the initial state. Furthermore, we demonstrate the versatility of our platform by measuring Renyi entropies. Our method could also be extended to higher moments of the physical observables and disorder learning.

Appropriately identifying children with disabilities--in ways that are timely, comprehensive, and accurate--is critical for ensuring that learners receive the supports they need to meet early milestones and succeed in school. In turn, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) charges states and school districts with: (1) finding all children, birth through age 21, suspected of having a disability; (2) evaluating them to determine if they are eligible for IDEA services; and (3) measuring and addressing racial or ethnic disparities in who is identified. Since IDEA's reauthorization in 2004, there is greater access to data and more sophisticated approaches to screen for and detect certain disabilities, an increasingly diverse child population, and new regulations on how to measure disparities in identification. This report examines how state and district practices during the 2019-2020 school year aligned with IDEA's goals of appropriate identification.

The NPEFS instructions ask SEAs to report revenues and expenditures covering prekindergarten through high school public education in regular, special, and vocational schools; charter schools; and state-run education programs (such as special education schools or education programs for incarcerated youth).

Labor organization efforts grew following the pandemic in the United States at tech companies, automakers, and even higher education institutions. This brief examines unionization trends at private colleges and universities from 2007 to 2023, revealing staff as the main force behind unionization attempts, followed by contingent faculty. Major unions like the SEIU and the AFL-CIO play significant roles in representing college and university employees. This study underscores the importance of understanding historic unionization efforts, shedding light on often overlooked staff categories like maintenance and security.

Decades of chronic underfunding and inequitable funding have been spiraling Pennsylvania's public school system into crisis--failing kids and threatening the future of the Commonwealth. The Commonwealth Court has ruled that the state's current funding system for K-12 schools is unconstitutional and the state must take action to adequately and equitably fund schools. This report provides a cautionary tale for those considering expanding existing taxpayer-funded vouchers to attend private schools in Pennsylvania or creating a new program. Pennsylvania does not need to rely only on evidence from other states in evaluating whether to establish a new taxpayer-funded school voucher program. The reason: Pennsylvania already has two existing voucher programs now funded for a combined $470 million per year, over four times more than in 2012-13, the first year of the Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) program, the newer of the two new voucher programs. The legislature first provided funds for the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program in 2001-02. This report updates a 2017 Keystone Research Center report on these two existing voucher programs, which have received about $2.6 billion in state tax credits since their inception. This report finds: (1) All students in the state do not benefit equally from Pennsylvania's voucher program--students in rural communities often don't have access and participating schools are allowed to, and do, discriminate against students; (2) By design, neither the EITC nor OSTC program requires meaningful educational or financial accountability; Scholarship organizations and schools have few reporting requirements, making it difficult to assess impact or program compliance; (3) The EITC/OSTC programs are subsidizing religious schools that have few state-required standards regarding curriculum. Some of these schools receiving public money teach creationism as science and present the Bible as factually accurate history; and (4) PA's existing voucher program subsidizes the state's most elite and expensive private schools, as well as affluent families. The inadequate accountability in Pennsylvania's $470 million OSTC and EITC programs (for 2023-24) makes clear that the state should not divert more taxpayer dollars to these programs or create a new one. At minimum, a comprehensive financial and educational audit of these programs must be done first, including to evaluate curricula schools use and make recommendations regarding basic curriculum standards. The Independent Fiscal Office (IFO) attempted to evaluate the effectiveness of these programs and reported that, due to a lack of reporting requirements, it could not do so. Pennsylvania should also prioritize fully and fairly funding public schools, which serve all of Pennsylvania's students. A public dollar spent on expanding existing or creating new voucher programs in Pennsylvania is a dollar less that can be spent to meet the court-ordered mandate to fix the unconstitutional public school funding system.

We investigate a quantum dynamical phase transition induced by the competition between local unitary evolution and dissipation in a qubit chain with a strong, on-site $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. While the steady-state of this evolution is always maximally-mixed, we show that the dynamical behavior of certain non-local observables on the approach to this steady-state is dictated by a quantum Ising model with a $\textit{complex}$ transverse-field (cTFIM). We investigate these observables analytically, uncovering a dynamical phase transition as the relative rate of unitary evolution and dissipation is tuned. We show that the weak-dissipation limit corresponds to a cTFIM with a large magnitude of the imaginary transverse-field, for which the many-body "ground-state" (with smallest real eigenvalue) is gapless, exhibiting quasi-long-range correlations of the local magnetization with a continuously-varying exponent. Correspondingly, the dynamics of the non-local observables show oscillatory behavior with an amplitude decaying exponentially in time. The strong-dissipation limit corresponds to a gapped ferromagnetic phase of the cTFIM, and non-local observables show exponential decay on the approach to equilibrium. This transition in (1+1)-dimensions has a peculiar, "two-sided" nature appearing as either first- or second-order depending on the phase from which the transition is approached, an analytic result which is corroborated by numerical studies. In higher dimensions, we present a field-theoretic understanding of the first-order nature of this transition, when approaching from the ferromagnetic phase of the cTFIM, though the nature of the phase with large imaginary transverse-field remains to be understood., Comment: 15 + 14 pages, 8 figures

Recent latent-space monitoring techniques have shown promise as defenses against LLM attacks. These defenses act as scanners that seek to detect harmful activations before they lead to undesirable actions. This prompts the question: Can models execute harmful behavior via inconspicuous latent states? Here, we study such obfuscated activations. We show that state-of-the-art latent-space defenses -- including sparse autoencoders, representation probing, and latent OOD detection -- are all vulnerable to obfuscated activations. For example, against probes trained to classify harmfulness, our attacks can often reduce recall from 100% to 0% while retaining a 90% jailbreaking rate. However, obfuscation has limits: we find that on a complex task (writing SQL code), obfuscation reduces model performance. Together, our results demonstrate that neural activations are highly malleable: we can reshape activation patterns in a variety of ways, often while preserving a network's behavior. A higgsino could be some or all of the dark matter, with a mass bounded from above by about 1.1 TeV assuming a thermal freezeout density, and from below by collider searches. Direct detection experiments imply purity constraints on a dark matter higgsino, limiting the mixing with the electroweak gauginos. Using the new strong limits available as of the end of 2024 from the LUX-ZEPLIN experiment, I quantify the resulting lower bounds on gaugino masses and upper bounds on higgsino mass splittings, assuming that the scalar superpartners and Higgs bosons of minimal supersymmetry are in the decoupling limit. Similar bounds are projected for the critical future scenario that direct detection experiments reach the neutrino fog that hampers discovery prospects., Comment: 24 pages

We present three schemes for constructing a (2,2)-Shor-encoded 6-ring photonic resource state for fusion-based quantum computing, each relying on a different type of photon source. We benchmark these architectures by analyzing their ability to achieve the best-known loss tolerance threshold for fusion-based quantum computation using the target resource state. More precisely, we estimate their minimum hardware requirements for fault-tolerant quantum computation in terms of the number of photon sources to achieve on-demand generation of resource states with a desired generation period. Notably, we find that a group of 12 deterministic single-photon sources containing a single matter qubit degree of freedom can produce the target resource state near-deterministically by exploiting entangling gates that are repeated until success. The approach is fully modular, eliminates the need for lossy large-scale multiplexing, and reduces the overhead for resource-state generation by several orders of magnitude compared to architectures using heralded single-photon sources and probabilistic linear-optical entangling gates. Our work shows that the use of deterministic single-photon sources embedding a qubit substantially shortens the path toward fault-tolerant photonic quantum computation.

Cosmic shear, galaxy clustering, and the abundance of massive halos each probe the large-scale structure of the universe in complementary ways. We present cosmological constraints from the joint analysis of the three probes, building on the latest analyses of the lensing-informed abundance of clusters identified by the South Pole Telescope (SPT) and of the auto- and cross-correlation of galaxy position and weak lensing measurements (3$\times$2pt) in the Dark Energy Survey (DES). We consider the cosmological correlation between the different tracers and we account for the systematic uncertainties that are shared between the large-scale lensing correlation functions and the small-scale lensing-based cluster mass calibration. Marginalized over the remaining $\Lambda$CDM parameters (including the sum of neutrino masses) and 52 astrophysical modeling parameters, we measure $\Omega_\mathrm{m}=0.300\pm0.017$ and $\sigma_8=0.797\pm0.026$. Compared to constraints from Planck primary CMB anisotropies, our constraints are only 15% wider with a probability to exceed of 0.22 ($1.2\sigma$) for the two-parameter difference. We further obtain $S_8\equiv\sigma_8(\Omega_\mathrm{m}/0.3)^{0.5}=0.796\pm0.013$ which is lower than the Planck measurement at the $1.6\sigma$ level. The combined SPT cluster, DES 3$\times$2pt, and Planck datasets mildly prefer a non-zero positive neutrino mass, with a 95% upper limit $\sum m_\nu<0.25~\mathrm{eV}$ on the sum of neutrino masses. Assuming a $w$CDM model, we constrain the dark energy equation of state parameter $w=-1.15^{+0.23}_{-0.17}$ and when combining with Planck primary CMB anisotropies, we recover $w=-1.20^{+0.15}_{-0.09}$, a $1.7\sigma$ difference with a cosmological constant. We derive a general change of variables formula for score functions, showing that for a smooth, invertible transformation $\mathbf{y} = \phi(\mathbf{x})$, the transformed score function $\nabla_{\mathbf{y}} \log q(\mathbf{y})$ can be expressed directly in terms of $\nabla_{\mathbf{x}} \log p(\mathbf{x})$. Using this result, we develop two applications: First, we establish a reverse-time It\^o lemma for score-based diffusion models, allowing the use of $\nabla_{\mathbf{x}} \log p_t(\mathbf{x})$ to reverse an SDE in the transformed space without directly learning $\nabla_{\mathbf{y}} \log q_t(\mathbf{y})$. This approach enables training diffusion models in one space but sampling in another, effectively decoupling the forward and reverse processes. Second, we introduce generalized sliced score matching, extending traditional sliced score matching from linear projections to arbitrary smooth transformations. This provides greater flexibility in high-dimensional density estimation. We demonstrate these theoretical advances through applications to diffusion on the probability simplex and empirically compare our generalized score matching approach against traditional sliced score matching methods., Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures

In this invited review, we discuss the evaporation of a black hole, with emphasis on the resulting macroscopically distinct patterns of Hawking radiation. The density matrix of this radiation can approach a pure final state in the form of a highly entangled macroscopic superposition state. We note that this exact property is exhibited in replica wormhole calculations, and also in quantum hair effects on Hawking radiation amplitudes. Finally, we revisit the information paradox (Mathur's theorem and firewalls), showing that it can be resolved by macroscopic entanglement., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. Optimal control problems with state distribution constraints have attracted interest for their expressivity, but solutions rely on linear approximations. We approach the problem of driving the state of a dynamical system in distribution from a sequential decision-making perspective. We formulate the optimal control problem as an appropriate Markov decision process (MDP), where the actions correspond to the state-feedback control policies. We then solve the MDP using Monte Carlo tree search (MCTS). This renders our method suitable for any dynamics model. A key component of our approach is a novel, easy to compute, distance metric in the distribution space that allows our algorithm to guide the distribution of the state. This paper addresses the challenge of spectral-spatial feature extraction for hyperspectral image classification by introducing a novel tensor-based framework. The proposed approach incorporates circular convolution into a tensor structure to effectively capture and integrate both spectral and spatial information. Building upon this framework, the traditional Principal Component Analysis (PCA) technique is extended to its tensor-based counterpart, referred to as Tensor Principal Component Analysis (TPCA). The proposed TPCA method leverages the inherent multi-dimensional structure of hyperspectral data, thereby enabling more effective feature representation. Experimental results on benchmark hyperspectral datasets demonstrate that classification models using TPCA features consistently outperform those using traditional PCA and other state-of-the-art techniques. These findings highlight the potential of the tensor-based framework in advancing hyperspectral image analysis.

Early-time spectroscopy of supernovae (SNe), acquired within days of explosion, yields crucial insights into their outermost ejecta layers, facilitating the study of their environments, progenitor systems, and explosion mechanisms. Recent efforts in early discovery and follow-up of SNe have shown the potential insights that can be gained from early-time spectra. The Time-Domain Extragalactic Survey (TiDES), conducted with the 4-meter Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope (4MOST), will provide spectroscopic follow-up of transients discovered by the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). Current simulations indicate that early-time spectroscopic studies conducted with TiDES data will be limited by the current SN selection criteria. To enhance TiDES's capability for early-time SN spectroscopic studies, we propose an additional set of selection criteria focusing on early-time (young) SNe (YSNe). Utilising the Zwicky Transient Facility live transient alerts, we developed criteria to select YSNe while minimising the sample's contamination rate to 28 percent. The developed criteria were applied to LSST simulations, yielding a sample of 1167 Deep Drilling Field survey SNe and 67388 Wide Fast Deep survey SNe for follow-up with 4MOST. We demonstrate that our criteria enables the selection of SNe at early-times, enhancing TiDES's future early-time spectroscopic SN studies. Finally, we investigated 4MOST-like observing strategies to increase the sample of spectroscopically observed YSNe. We propose that a 4MOST-like observing strategy that follows LSST with a delay of 3 days is optimal for the TiDES SN survey, while a 1 day delay is most optimal for enhancing the early-time science in conjunction with our YSN selection criteria., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS

Here, we present a new thermomechanical geodynamic, numerical implementation that incorporates Maxwell viscoelastic rheology accounting for temperature-dependent power-law dislocation creep and pressure-sensitive, non-associated Drucker-Prager brittle failure, as well as for volumetric stresses and strains during viscoplastic flow, a departure from the traditional incompressible assumptions. In solving for energy conservation, we incorporate the heat source term resulting from irreversible mechanical deformations, which embodies viscoelastic and viscoplastic work, and by considering the total stress tensor and total inelastic strain rate tensors, including dilatant plasticity effects for lithospheric-scale applications, instead of only the shear terms as is usually assumed for incompressible materials. This form of the work term thus allows to consider, volumetric deformation and to couple the energy equation to the constitutive description, and hence the stress balance, via the evolving temperature field. Code design enables us to switch individual features of this general rheology ``on or off'' and thus to benchmark this implementation with published numerical experiments of crustal-scale shortening experiments. We investigate whether ``brittle-plastic'' compressibility can promote or inhibit localization of deformation and thermal evolution during compression for crustal, and upper mantle rheology. For both crustal-scale and lithospheric-scale experiments, we establish that the feedback from volumetric dissipation, while contributing to temperature increase along with shear dissipation, can potentially slow down heat production per unit time, depending on the choice of boundary conditions. Our new implementation can be used to address buckling problems and collision tectonics.

An invariant descriptor captures meaningful structural features of networks, useful where traditional visualizations, like node-link views, face challenges like the hairball phenomenon (inscrutable overlap of points and lines). Designing invariant descriptors involves balancing abstraction and information retention, as richer data summaries demand more storage and computational resources. Building on prior work, chiefly the BMatrix -- a matrix descriptor visualized as the invariant network portrait heatmap -- we introduce BFS-Census, a new algorithm computing our Census data structures: Census-Node, Census-Edge, and Census-Stub. Our experiments show Census-Stub, which focuses on stubs (half-edges), has orders of magnitude greater discerning power (ability to tell non-isomorphic graphs apart) than any other descriptor in this study, without a difficult trade-off: the substantial increase in resolution does not come at a commensurate cost in storage space or computation power. We also present new visualizations -- our Hop-Census polylines and Census-Census trajectories -- and evaluate them using real-world graphs, including a sensitivity analysis that shows graph topology change maps to visual Census change.

We study the homotopy theory of polyhedral products associated to a combinatorial generalisation of manifolds known as pseudomanifolds. As special cases, we show that loop spaces of moment-angle manifolds associated to triangulations of $S^2$ and $S^3$ decompose as a product of spheres and loops on spheres., Comment: 18 pages

The categories of real and of complex Hilbert spaces with bounded linear maps have received purely categorical characterisations by Chris Heunen and Andre Kornell. These characterisations are achieved through Sol\`er's theorem, a result which shows that certain orthomodularity conditions on a Hermitian space over an involutive division ring result in a Hilbert space with the division ring being either the reals, complexes or quaternions. The characterisation by Heunen and Kornell makes use of a monoidal structure, which in turn excludes the category of quaternionic Hilbert spaces. We provide an alternative characterisation without the assumption of monoidal structure on the category. This new approach not only gives a new characterisation of the categories of real and of complex Hilbert spaces, but also the category of quaternionic Hilbert spaces., Comment: 20 pages

Galaxies are predicted to assemble their stellar haloes through the accretion of stellar material from interactions with their cosmic environment. Observations that trace stellar halo buildup probe the processes that drive galaxy size and stellar mass growth. We investigate stellar halo assembly over $0.2 \leq z \leq 1.1$ in a mass-complete ($M_{\star} \geq 10^{9.5}M_{\odot}$) sample of 242,456 star-forming and 88,421 quiescent galaxies (SFGs and QGs) from the CLAUDS and HSC-SSP surveys. We extract galaxy rest-frame $g$-band surface brightness ($\mu_g$) profiles to study faint, extended emission in galaxy outskirts. We examine trends in galaxy assembly by analyzing the median $\mu_g$ profiles in different SFG and QG \msS ranges with decreasing redshift and connecting evolution in galaxy $\mu_g$ profiles with the underlying stellar mass growth in galaxies. Since $z=1.1$, the majority of evolution in the median $\mu_g$ profiles of galaxies ($\sim$64$\%$ in SFGs and $\sim$71$\%$ in QGs) occurs throughout their stellar halo regions (2-10$R_e$). More massive galaxies assemble stellar halo material more rapidly at $0.2 \leq z \leq 1.1$. Over this period, QGs grow a larger fraction of their stellar haloes than SFGs at fixed $M_{\star}$ (factor of $\sim$1.2). Although star formation can account for the stellar halo growth observed in low-mass SFGs ($10^{9.5}M_\odot \leq M_\star < 10^{10.5}M_\odot$), high-mass SFGs ($M_\star \geq 10^{10.5}M_\odot$) and both low- and high-mass QGs require an additional assembly mechanism. Our results suggest accretion via minor mergers drives additional stellar halo growth in these galaxies. The contribution from accretion is larger in more massive galaxies (over $M_{\star} \geq 10^{9.5}M_{\odot}$), and QGs exhibit larger fractional increases to their ex-situ fractions over $0.2 \leq z \leq 1.1$ than SFGs at fixed $M_{\star}$., Comment: 29 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables. Young and forming planetesimals experience impacts from particles present in a protostellar disk. Using crater scaling laws, we integrate ejecta distributions for oblique impacts. For impacts at 10 to 65 m/s, expected for impacts associated with a disk wind, we estimate the erosion rate and torque exerted on the planetesimal. We find that the mechanism for angular momentum drain proposed by Dobrovolskis and Burns (1984) for asteroids could operate in the low velocity regime of a disk wind. Though spin-down associated with impacts can facilitate planetesimal collapse, we find that the process is inefficient. We find that angular momentum drain via impacts operates in the gravitational focusing regime, though even less efficiently than for lower mass planetesimals. The angular momentum transfer is most effective when the wind speed is low, the projectile density is high compared to the bulk planetesimal density, and the planetesimal is composed of low-strength material. Due to its inefficiency, we find that angular momentum drain due to impacts within a pebble cloud does not by itself facilitate collapse of single planetesimals., Comment: 20 Pages, 10 Figures, Submitted to Icarus. In the era of Extremely Large Telescopes, the current generation of 8-10m facilities are likely to remain competitive at ground-UV wavelengths for the foreseeable future. The Cassegrain U-Band Efficient Spectrograph (CUBES) has been designed to provide high instrumental efficiency ( $>$ 37\%) observations in the near UV (305-400 nm requirement, 300-420 nm goal) at a spectral resolving power of R $>$ 20, 000 (with a lower-resolution, sky-limited mode of R $\sim$ 7, 000). With the design focusing on maximizing the instrument throughput (ensuring a Signal to Noise Ratio -SNR- $\sim$ 20 per spectral resolution element at 313 nm for U $\sim$ 17.5 mag objects in 1h of observations), it will offer new possibilities in many fields of astrophysics: i) access to key lines of stellar spectra (e.g. lighter elements, in particular Beryllium), extragalactic studies (e.g. circumgalactic medium of distant galaxies, cosmic UV background) and follow-up of explosive transients. We present the CUBES instrument design, currently in Phase-C and approaching the final design review, summarizing the hardware architecture and interfaces between the different subsystems as well as the relevant technical requirements. We describe the optical, mechanical, electrical design of the different subsystems (from the telescope adapter and support structure, through the main opto-mechanical path, including calibration unit, detector devices and cryostat control, main control electronics), detailing peculiar instrument functions like the Active Flexure Compensation (AFC). Furthermore, we outline the AITV concept and the main instrument operations giving an overview of its software ecosystem. Installation at the VLT is planned for 2028-2029 and first science operations in late 2029.

This letter presents the measurement of the energy-dependent neutrino-nucleon cross section in tungsten and the differential flux of muon neutrinos and anti-neutrinos. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of $13.6 \, {\rm TeV}$ and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $(65.6 \pm 1.4) \, \mathrm{fb^{-1}}$. Using the active electronic components of the FASER detector, $338.1 \pm 21.0$ charged current muon neutrino interaction events are identified, with backgrounds from other processes subtracted. We unfold the neutrino events into a fiducial volume corresponding to the sensitive regions of the FASER detector and interpret the results in two ways: We use the expected neutrino flux to measure the cross section, and we use the predicted cross section to measure the neutrino flux. Both results are presented in six bins of neutrino energy, achieving the first differential measurement in the TeV range. The observed distributions align with Standard Model predictions. Using this differential data, we extract the contributions of neutrinos from pion and kaon decays.

We consider weakly non-linear gravitational perturbations of a near-extremal Kerr black hole governed by the second order vacuum Einstein equation. Using the GHZ formalism [Green et al., Class. Quant. Grav. 7(7):075001, 2020], these are parameterized by a Hertz potential. We make an ansatz for the Hertz potential as a series of zero-damped quasinormal modes with time-dependent amplitudes, and derive a non-linear dynamical system for them. We find that our dynamical system has a time-independent solution within the near horizon scaling limit. This equilibrium solution is supported on axisymmetric modes, with amplitudes scaling as $c_\ell \sim C^{\rm low} 2^{-\ell/2} \ell^{-\frac{7}{2}}$ for large polar angular momentum mode number $\ell$, where $C^{\rm low}$ is a cumulative amplitude of the low $\ell$ modes. We interpret our result as evidence that the dynamical evolution will approach, for a parametrically long time as extremality is approached, a distribution of mode amplitudes dyadically exponentially suppressed in $\ell$, hence as the endpoint of an inverse cascade. It is reminiscent of weather-like phenomena in certain models of atmospheric dynamics of rotating bodies. During the timescale considered, the decay of the QNMs themselves plays no role given their parametrically long half-life. We consider the problem of managing a portfolio of moving-band statistical arbitrages (MBSAs), inspired by the Markowitz optimization framework. We show how to manage a dynamic basket of MBSAs, and illustrate the method on recent historical data, showing that it can perform very well in terms of risk-adjusted return, essentially uncorrelated with the market.

We consider the problem of constructing a portfolio that combines traditional financial assets with crypto assets. We show that despite the documented attributes of crypto assets, such as high volatility, heavy tails, excess kurtosis, and skewness, a simple extension of traditional risk allocation provides robust solutions for integrating these emerging assets into broader investment strategies. Examination of the risk allocation holdings suggests an even simpler method, analogous to the traditional 60/40 stocks/bonds allocation, involving a fixed allocation to crypto and traditional assets, dynamically diluted with cash to achieve a target risk level.

Determining the internal structure of Uranus is a key objective for planetary science. Knowledge of Uranus's bulk composition and the distribution of elements is crucial to understanding its origin and evolutionary path. In addition, Uranus represents a poorly understood class of intermediate-mass planets (intermediate in size between the relatively well studied terrestrial and gas giant planets), which appear to be very common in the Galaxy. As a result, a better characterization of Uranus will also help us to better understand exoplanets in this mass and size regime. Recognizing the importance of Uranus, a Keck Institute for Space Studies (KISS) workshop was held in September 2023 to investigate how we can improve our knowledge of Uranus's internal structure in the context of a future Uranus mission that includes an orbiter and a probe. The scientific goals and objectives of the recently released Planetary Science and Astrobiology Decadal Survey were taken as our starting point. We reviewed our current knowledge of Uranus's interior and identified measurement and other mission requirements for a future Uranus spacecraft, providing more detail than was possible in the Decadal Survey's mission study and including new insights into the measurements to be made. We also identified important knowledge gaps to be closed with Earth-based efforts in the near term that will help guide the design of the mission and interpret the data returned., Comment: Study Report prepared for the W.
