The fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect provides a paradigmatic example of a topological phase of matter. FQH edges are theoretically described via models belonging to the class of chiral Luttinger liquid (CLL) theories [1 (Wen, 2007)]. These theories predict exotic properties of the excitations, such as fractional charge and fractional statistics. Despite theoretical confidence in this description and qualitative experimental confirmations, quantitative experimental evidence for CLL behaviour is scarce. In this work, we study tunnelling between edge modes in the quantum Hall regime at the filling factor $\nu=1/3$. We present measurements at different system temperatures and perform a novel scaling analysis of the experimental data, originally proposed in Ref. [2 (Schiller et al., 2022)]. Our analysis shows clear evidence of CLL breakdown - above a certain energy scale. In the low-energy regime, where the scaling behaviour holds, we extract the property called the scaling dimension and find it heavily renormalized compared to na\"ive CLL theory predictions. Our results show that decades-old experiments contain a lot of previously overlooked information that can be used to investigate the physics of quantum Hall edges. In particular, we open a road to quantitative experimental studies of (a) scaling dimension renormalization in quantum point contacts and (b) CLL breakdown mechanisms at an intermediate energy scale, much smaller than the bulk gap., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures + SM (4-pages, 5 figures)

With the support of the national program on measurements, standards, and evaluation of quantum technologies MetriQs-France, a part of the French national quantum strategy, the BACQ project is dedicated to application-oriented benchmarks for quantum computing. The consortium gathering THALES, EVIDEN, an Atos business, CEA, CNRS, TERATEC, and LNE aims at establishing performance evaluation criteria of reference, meaningful for industry users.

Cooling a quantum system to its ground state is important for the characterization of non-trivial interacting systems, and in the context of a variety of quantum information platforms. In principle, this can be achieved by employing measurement-based passive steering protocols, where the steering steps are predetermined and are not based on measurement readouts. However, measurements, i.e., coupling the system to auxiliary quantum degrees of freedom, is rather costly, and protocols in which the number of measurements scales with system size will have limited practical applicability. Here, we identify conditions under which measurement-based cooling protocols can be taken to the dilute limit. For two examples of frustration-free one-dimensional spin chains, we show that steering on a single link is sufficient to cool these systems into their unique ground states. We corroborate our analytical arguments with finite-size numerical simulations and discuss further applications.

We develop and apply an extension of the randomized compiling (RC) protocol that includes a special treatment of neighboring qubits and dramatically reduces crosstalk effects caused by the application of faulty gates on superconducting qubits in IBMQ quantum computers (\texttt{ibm\_lagos} and \texttt{ibmq\_ehningen}). Crosstalk errors, stemming from CNOT two-qubit gates, are a crucial source of errors on numerous quantum computing platforms. For the IBMQ machines, their magnitude is often overlooked-9. Our RC protocol turns coherent noise due to crosstalk into a depolarising noise channel that can then be treated using established error mitigation schemes, such as noise estimation circuits. We apply our approach to the quantum simulation of the non-equilibrium dynamics of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) Hamiltonian for superconductivity, a particularly challenging model to simulate on quantum hardware because of the long-range interaction of Cooper pairs. With 135 CNOT gates, we work in a regime where crosstalk, as opposed to either trotterization or qubit decoherence, dominates the error. Our twirling of neighboring qubits is shown to dramatically improve the noise estimation protocol without the need to add new qubits or circuits and allows for a quantitative simulation of the BCS model., Comment: 27 pages, 15 figures

We present and analyze a protocol for driven-dissipatively preparing and stabilizing a manifold of quantum manybody entangled states with symmetry-protected topological order. Specifically, we consider the experimental platform consisting of superconducting transmon circuits and linear microwave resonators. We perform theoretical modeling of this platform via pulse-level simulations based on physical features of real devices. In our protocol, transmon qutrits are mapped onto spin-1 systems. The qutrits' sharing of nearest-neighbor dispersive coupling to a dissipative microwave resonator enables elimination of state population in the $S^\mathrm{total}=2$ subspace for each adjacent pair, and thus, the stabilization of the manybody system into the Affleck, Kennedy, Lieb, and Tasaki (AKLT) state up to the edge mode configuration. We also analyze the performance of our protocol as the system size scales up to four qutrits, in terms of its fidelity as well as the stabilization time. Our work shows the capacity of driven-dissipative superconducting cQED systems to host robust and self-corrected quantum manybody states that are topologically non-trivial., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures

Distinct from the dynamical phase, in a cyclic evolution, a system's state may acquire an additional component, a.k.a. geometric phase. The latter is a manifestation of a closed path in state space. Geometric phases underlie various physical phenomena, notably the emergence of topological invariants of many-body states. Recently it has been demonstrated that geometric phases can be induced by a sequence of generalized measurements implemented on a single qubit. Furthermore, it has been predicted that such geometric phases may exhibit a topological transition as function of the measurement strength. Here, we demonstrate and study this transition experimentally employing an optical platform. We show the robustness to certain generalizations of the original protocol, as well as to certain types of imperfections. Our protocol can be interpreted in terms of environment-induced geometric phases.

Fractional quantum Hall quasiparticles are generally characterized by two quantum numbers: electric charge $Q$ and scaling dimension $\Delta$. For the simplest states (such as the Laughlin series) the scaling dimension determines the quasiparticle's anyonic statistics (the statistical phase $\theta=2\pi\Delta$). For more complicated states (featuring counterpropagating modes or non-Abelian statistics) knowing the scaling dimension is not enough to extract the quasiparticle statistics. Nevertheless, even in those cases knowing the scaling dimension facilitates distinguishing different candidate theories for describing the quantum Hall state at a particular filling (such as PH-Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian at $\nu=5/2$). Here we propose a scheme for extracting the scaling dimension of quantum Hall quasiparticles from thermal tunneling noise produced at a quantum point contact. Our scheme makes only minimal assumptions about the edge structure and features the level of robustness, simplicity, and model independence comparable to extracting the quasiparticle charge from tunneling shot noise., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures + appendices. Following the evolution under a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian (nHH) involves significant probability loss. This makes various nHH effects impractical in the quantum realm. In contrast, Lindbladian evolution conserves probability, facilitating observation and application of exotic effects characteristic of open quantum systems. Here we are concerned with the effect of chiral state conversion: encircling an exceptional point, multiple system states are converted into a single system eigenmode. While for nHH the possible converted-into eigenmodes are pure states, for Lindbladians these are typically mixed states. We consider hybrid-Liouvillian evolution, which interpolates between a Lindbladian and a nHH and enables combining the best of the two worlds. We design adiabatic evolution protocols that give rise to chiral state conversion with $\textit{pure}$ final states, no probability loss, and high fidelity. Furthermore, extending beyond continuous adiabatic evolution, we design a protocol that facilitates conversion to pure states with fidelity 1 and, at the same time, no probability loss. Measurement plays a quintessential role in the control of quantum systems. Beyond initialization and readout which pertain to projective measurements, weak measurements in particular, through their back-action on the system, may enable various levels of coherent control. The latter ranges from observing quantum trajectories to state dragging and steering. Furthermore, just like the adiabatic evolution of quantum states that is known to induce the Berry phase, sequential weak measurements may lead to path-dependent geometric phases. Here we measure the geometric phases induced by sequences of weak measurements and demonstrate a topological transition in the geometric phase controlled by measurement strength. This connection between weak measurement induced quantum dynamics and topological transitions reveals subtle topological features in measurement-based manipulation of quantum systems. Our protocol could be implemented for classes of operations (e.g. braiding) which are topological in nature. The state of a quantum system may be steered towards a predesignated target state, employing a sequence of weak $\textit{blind}$ measurements (where the detector's readouts are traced out). Here we analyze the steering of a two-level system using the interplay of a system Hamiltonian and weak measurements, and show that $\textit{any}$ pure or mixed state can be targeted. We show that the optimization of such a steering protocol is underlain by the presence of Liouvillian exceptional points. More specifically, for high purity target states, optimal steering implies purely relaxational dynamics marked by a second-order exceptional point, while for low purity target states, it implies an oscillatory approach to the target state. Studies of energy flow in quantum systems complement the information provided by common conductance measurements. The quantum limit of heat flow in one dimensional (1D) ballistic modes was predicted, and experimentally demonstrated, to have a universal value for bosons, fermions, and fractionally charged anyons. A fraction of this value is expected in non-abelian states. Nevertheless, open questions about energy relaxation along the propagation length in 1D modes remain. Here, we introduce a novel experimental setup that measures the energy relaxation in chiral 1D modes of the quantum Hall effect (QHE). Edge modes, emanating from a heated reservoir, are partitioned by a quantum point contact (QPC) located at their path. The resulting noise allows a determination of the 'effective temperature' at the location of the QPC. We found energy relaxation in all the tested QHE states, being integers or fractional. However, the relaxation was found to be mild in particle-like states, and prominent in hole-conjugate states.

Coherent steering of a quantum state, induced by a sequence of weak measurements, has become an active area of theoretical and experimental study. For a closed steered trajectory, the underlying phase factors involve both geometrical and dynamical terms. Furthermore, considering the reversal of the order of the measurement sequence, such a phase comprises a symmetric and an antisymmetric term. Superseding common wisdom, we show that the symmetric and the antisymmetric components do not correspond to the dynamical and geometrical parts respectively. Addressing a broad class of measurement protocols, we further investigate the dependence of the induced phases on the measurement parameters (e.g., the measurement strength). We find transitions between different topologically distinct sectors, defined by integer-valued winding numbers, and show that the transitions are accompanied by diverging dephasing. We study the Quantum Zeno Effect (QZE) induced by continuous partial measurement in the presence of short-correlated noise in the system Hamiltonian. We study the survival probability and the onset of the QZE as a function of the measurement strength, and find that, depending on the noise parameters, the quantum Zeno effect can be enhanced or suppressed by the noise in different regions of the parameter space. Notably, the conditions for the enhancement of the QZE are different when determined by the short-time or long-time behavior of the survival probability, or by the measurement strength marking the onset of the quantum Zeno regime., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Geometrical dephasing is distinct from dynamical dephasing in that it depends on the trajectory traversed, hence it reverses its sign upon flipping the direction in which the path is traced. Here we study sequences of generalized (weak) measurements that steer a system in a closed trajectory. The readout process is marked by fluctuations, giving rise to dephasing. Rather than classifying the latter as "dynamical" and "geometrical", we identify a contribution which is invariant under reversing the sequence ordering and, in analogy with geometrical dephasing, one which flips its sign upon the reversal of the winding direction, possibly resulting in partial suppression of dephasing (i.e., "coherency enhancement"). This dephasing asymmetry (under winding reversal) is a manifestation of intrinsic chirality, which weak measurements can (and generically do) possess. It is known that protocols based on weak measurements can be used to steer quantum systems into pre-designated pure states. Here we show that weak-measurement-based steering protocols can be harnessed for on-demand engineering of $\textit{mixed}$ states. In the quantum Zeno effect, quantum measurements can block the coherent oscillation of a two level system by freezing its state to one of the measurement eigenstates. The effect is conventionally controlled by the measurement frequency. Here we study the development of the Zeno regime as a function of the measurement strength for a continuous partial measurement. We show that the onset of the Zeno regime is marked by a $\textit{cascade of transitions}$ in the system dynamics as the measurement strength is increased. Some of these transitions are only apparent in the collective behavior of individual quantum trajectories and are invisible to the average dynamics. They include the appearance of a region of dynamically inaccessible states and of singularities in the steady-state probability distribution of states. These newly predicted dynamical features, which can be readily observed in current experiments, show the coexistence of fundamentally unpredictable quantum jumps with those continuously monitored and reverted in recent experiments., Comment: 6+8 pages, 3+0 figures

The state of a quantum system, adiabatically driven in a cycle, may acquire a measurable phase depending only on the closed trajectory in parameter space. Such geometric phases are ubiquitous, and also underline the physics of robust topological phenomena such as the quantum Hall effect. Equivalently, a geometric phase may be induced through a cyclic sequence of quantum measurements. We show that the application of a sequence of weak measurements renders the closed trajectories, hence the geometric phase, stochastic. We study the concomitant probability distribution and show that, when varying the measurement strength, the mapping between the measurement sequence and the geometric phase undergoes a topological transition. Our finding may impact measurement-induced control and manipulation of quantum states---a promising approach to quantum information processing. We provide a detailed theoretical analysis of the adiabatic evolution of degenerate open quantum systems, where the dynamics is induced by time-dependent fluctuating loop paths in control parameter space. For weak system-bath coupling, the fluctuations around a deterministic base path obey Gaussian statistics, where we assume that the quantum adiabatic theorem is also satisfied for fluctuating paths. We show that universal non-Abelian geometric dephasing (NAGD) contributions are contained in the fluctuation-averaged evolution operator. This operator plays a key role in all experimental protocols proposed in this work for the detection of NAGD. In particular, we formulate interference measurements providing full access to NAGD. Apart from a factor due to the dynamic phase and its fluctuations, the averaged evolution operator contains the averaged Berry matrix. A polar decomposition of this non-unitary matrix into the product of a unitary, $V$, and a positive semi-definite Hermitian matrix, $R$, reveals the physics of the NAGD contributions. Unlike the conventional dynamic dephasing rate, the NAGD eigenrates encoded by $R$ depend on the loop orientation sense and, in particular, change sign under a reversal of the direction. A negative rate then implies amplification of coherences as compared to the ones when only dynamic dephasing is present. The non-Abelian character of geometric dephasing is rooted in the non-commutativity of $V$ and $R$ and causes smoking-gun signatures in interference experiments. We also clarify why systems subject to topological protection do not show geometric dephasing. Without full protection, however, geometric dephasing can arise and has to be taken into account. We study the adiabatic dynamics of degenerate quantum states induced by loop paths in a control parameter space. The latter correspond to noisy trajectories if the system is weakly coupled to environmental modes. On top of conventional dynamic dephasing, we find a universal non-Abelian geometric dephasing (NAGD) contribution and express it in terms of the non-Abelian Berry connection and curvature. We show that NAGD implies either decay or amplification of coherences as compared to the coherences when only dynamic dephasing is present. The full NAGD matrix structure can be probed through interference experiments. Bell's theorem renders quantum correlations distinct from those of any local-realistic model. Although being stronger than classical correlations, quantum correlations are limited by the Tsirelson bound. This bound, however, applies for Hermitian, commutative operators corresponding to non-signaling observables in Alice's and Bob's spacelike-separated labs. As an attempt to explore theories beyond quantum mechanics and analyze the uniqueness of the latter, we examine in this work the extent of non-local correlations when relaxing these fundamental assumptions, which allows for theories with non-local signaling. We prove that, somewhat surprisingly, the Tsirelson bound in the Bell-Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt scenario, and similarly other related bounds on non-local correlations, remain effective as long as we maintain the Hilbert space structure of the theory. Furthermore, in the case of Hermitian observables we find novel relations between non-locality, local correlations, and signaling. We demonstrate that such non-local signaling theories are naturally simulated by quantum systems of parafermionic zero modes. We numerically study the derived bounds in parafermionic systems, confirming the bounds' validity yet finding a drastic difference between correlations of 'signaling' and 'non-signaling' sets of observables. We propose and study a parafermionic generalization of the topological Kondo effect. The latter has been predicted to arise for a Coulomb-blockaded mesoscopic topological superconductor (Majorana box), where at least three normal leads are tunnel-coupled to different Majorana zero modes on the box. The Majorana states represent a quantum impurity spin that is partially screened due to cotunneling processes between leads, with a stable non-Fermi liquid ground state. Our theory studies a generalization where (i) Majorana states are replaced by topologically protected parafermionic zero modes, (ii) charging effects again define a spin-like quantum impurity on the resulting parafermion box, and (iii) normal leads are substituted by fractional edge states. In this multi-terminal problem, different fractional edge leads couple only via the parafermion box. We show that although the linear conductance tensor exhibits similar behavior as in the Majorana case, both at weak and strong coupling, our parafermionic generalization is actually not a Kondo problem but defines a rich new class of quantum impurity problems. At the strong-coupling fixed point, a current injected through a reference lead will be isotropically partitioned into outgoing currents in all other leads, together with a universal negative current scattered into the reference lead. The device can thus be operated as current extractor, where the current partitioning is noiseless at the fixed point. We describe a fractional quantum Hall setup proximitized by superconductors and ferromagnets, which could allow for an experimental realization in the near future., Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures

We consider charge pumping in a system of parafermions, implemented at fractional quantum Hall edges. Our pumping protocol leads to a noisy behavior of the pumped current. As the adiabatic limit is approached, not only does the noisy behavior persist but the counting statistics of the pumped current becomes robust and universal. In particular, the resulting Fano factor is given in terms of the system's topological degeneracy and the pumped quasiparticle charge. Parafermionic zero modes are fractional topologically protected quasiparticles expected to arise in various platforms. We show that Coulomb charging effects define a parafermion box with unique access options via fractional edge states and/or quantum antidots. Basic protocols for the detection, manipulation, and control of parafermionic quantum states are formulated. Motivated by recent experiments we study the influence of thermal noise on the phase slips in toroidal Bose-Einstein condensates with a rotating weak link. We derive a generalized Arrhenius-like expression for the rate of stochastic phase slips. We develop a method to estimate the energy barrier separating different superflow states. The parameters at which the energy barrier disappears agree with the critical parameters for deterministic phase slips obtained from dynamics simulations, which confirms the validity of our energetic analysis. We reveal that adding thermal noise lowers the phase-slip threshold. However, the quantitative impact of the stochastic phase slips turns out to be too small to explain the significant discrepancy between theoretical and the experimental results., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures

Fractional quantum Hall quasiparticles are famous for having fractional electric charge. Recent experiments report that the quasiparticles' effective electric charge determined through tunneling current noise measurements can depend on the system parameters such as temperature or bias voltage. Several works proposed to understand this as a signature for edge theory properties changing with energy scale. I consider two of such experiments and show that in one of them the apparent dependence of the electric charge on a system parameter is likely to be an artefact of experimental data analysis. Bilayer graphene has been predicted to give unprecedented tunability of the electron-electron interaction with the help of external parameters, allowing one to stabilize different fractional quantum Hall states. Recent experimental works make theoretical analysis of such systems extremely relevant. In this paper we describe a methodology for investigating the possibility of realizing specific fractional quantum Hall states in bilayer graphene taking into account polarization effects and virtual interband transitions.
