We present the first spatially-resolved infrared images of supernova remnants (SNRs) in M33 with the unprecedented sensitivity and resolution of JWST. We analyze 43 SNRs in four JWST fields: two covering central and southern M33 with separate NIRCam (F335M, F444W) and MIRI (F560W, F2100W) observations, one $\sim$5 kpc-long radial strip observed with MIRI F770W, and one covering the giant HII region NGC 604 with multiple NIRCam and MIRI broad/narrowband filters. Of the 21 SNRs in the MIRI field, we found three clear detections (i.e., identical infrared and \ha morphologies), and six partial-detections, implying a detection fraction of 43\% in these bands. In contrast, only one SNR (out of 16) is detectable in the NIRCam field. One of the SNRs, L10-080, is a potential candidate for having freshly-formed ejecta dust, based on its size and centrally-concentrated 21 \mum emission. Two SNRs near NGC 604 have strong evidence of molecular (H$_2$) emission at 4.7 \mum, making them the farthest known SNRs with visible molecular shocks. Five SNRs have F770W observations, with the smaller younger objects showing tentative signs of emission, while the older, larger ones have voids. Multi-wavelength data indicate that the clearly-detected SNRs are also among the smallest, brightest at other wavelengths (\ha, radio and X-ray), have the broadest line widths (H$\alpha$ FWHM$\sim$250-350 km/s), and the densest environments. No strong correlation with star-formation histories are seen, with the clearly-detected SNRs having both high-mass ($\sim$35 \Msun) and low-mass ($\lesssim$10 \Msun) progenitors., Comment: 33 pages, 17 figures, 2 tables, submitted to ApJ

We present Gemini near-infrared integral field spectrograph (NIFS) K-band observations of the central 400 pc of NGC 1266, a nearby (D$\approx$30 Mpc) post-starburst galaxy with a powerful multi-phase outflow and a shocked ISM. We detect 7 H$_2$ ro-vibrational emission lines excited thermally to $T$$\sim$2000 K, and weak Br$\gamma$ emission, consistent with a fast C-shock. With these bright H$_2$ lines, we observe the spatial structure of the shock with an unambiguous tracer for the first time. The Br$\gamma$ emission is concentrated in the central $\lesssim$100 pc, indicating that any remaining star-formation in NGC 1266 is in the nucleus while the surrounding cold molecular gas has little on-going star-formation. Though it is unclear what fraction of this Br$\gamma$ emission is from star-formation or the AGN, assuming it is entirely due to star-formation we measure an instantaneous star-formation rate of 0.7 M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, though the star-formation rate may be significantly higher in the presence of additional extinction. NGC 1266 provides a unique laboratory to study the complex interactions between AGN, outflows, shocks, and star-formation, all of which are necessary to unravel the evolution of the post-starburst phase., Comment: ApJ accepted

We report the discovery of three faint and ultra-faint dwarf galaxies -- Sculptor A, Sculptor B and Sculptor C -- in the direction of NGC 300 (D=2.0 Mpc), a Large Magellanic Cloud-mass galaxy. Deep ground-based imaging with Gemini/GMOS resolves all three dwarf galaxies into stars, each displaying a red giant branch indicative of an old, metal-poor stellar population. No young stars or HI gas are apparent, and the lack of a GALEX UV detection suggests that all three systems are quenched. Sculptor C (D=2.04$^{+0.10}_{-0.13}$ Mpc; $M_V$=$-$9.1$\pm$0.1 mag or $L_V$=(3.7$^{+0.4}_{-0.3}$)$\times$10$^5$ $L_{\odot}$) is consistent with being a satellite of NGC 300. Sculptor A (D=1.35$^{+0.22}_{-0.08}$ Mpc; $M_V$=$-$6.9$\pm$0.3 mag or $L_V$=(5$^{+1}_{-1}$)$\times$10$^4$ $L_{\odot}$) is likely in the foreground of NGC 300 and at the extreme edge of the Local Group, analogous to the recently discovered ultra-faint Tucana B in terms of its physical properties and environment. Sculptor B (D=2.48$^{+0.21}_{-0.24}$ Mpc; $M_V$=$-$8.1$\pm$0.3 mag or $L_V$=(1.5$^{+0.5}_{-0.4}$)$\times$10$^5$ $L_{\odot}$) is likely in the background, but future distance measurements are necessary to solidify this statement. It is also of interest due to its quiescent state and low stellar mass. Both Sculptor A and B are $\gtrsim$2-4 $r_{vir}$ from NGC 300 itself. The discovery of three dwarf galaxies in isolated or low-density environments offers an opportunity to study the varying effects of ram pressure stripping, reionization and internal feedback in influencing the star formation history of the faintest stellar systems., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures. Mergers of and interactions between galaxies imprint a wide diversity of morphological, dynamical, and chemical characteristics in stellar halos and tidal streams. Measuring these characteristics elucidates aspects of the progenitors of the galaxies we observe today. The M81 group is the perfect galaxy group to understand the past, present, and future of a group of galaxies in the process of merging. Here we measure the end of star formation (t$_{90}$) and metallicity ([M/H]) of the stellar halo of M82 and the eastern tidal stream of NGC 3077 to: 1) test the idea that M82 possesses a genuine stellar halo, formed before any interaction with M81, 2) determine if NGC 3077's tidal disruption is related to the star formation history in its tails, and 3) create a timeline of the assembly history of the central trio in the M81 group. We argue that M82 possesses a genuine, metal poor ([M/H] ~ -1.62 dex) stellar halo, formed from the merger of a small satellite galaxy roughly 6.6 Gyr ago. We also find that the stars present in NGC 3077's tails formed before tidal disruption with M81, and possesses a roughly uniform metallicity as shown in Okamoto et. al. 2023 implying that NGC 3077's progenitor had significant population gradients. Stellar halos of galaxies, primarily formed through the accretion of smaller objects, are important to understand the hierarchical mass assembly of galaxies. However, the inner regions of stellar halos in disk galaxies are predicted to have an in-situ component that is expected to be prominent along the major axis. Kinematic information is crucial to disentangle the contribution of the in-situ component from the accreted stellar halos. The low surface brightness of stellar halos makes it inaccessible with traditional integrated light spectroscopy. In this work, using a novel technique, we study the kinematics of the stellar halo of the edge-on galaxy NGC 4945. We couple new deep Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer spectroscopic observations with existing Hubble Space Telescope imaging data to spectroscopically measure the line-of-sight (LOS) heliocentric velocity and velocity dispersion in two fields at a galactocentric distance of 12.2 kpc (outer disk field) and 34.6 kpc (stellar halo field) along NGC 4945 major axis, by stacking individual spectra of red giant branch and asymptotic giant branch stars. We obtain a LOS velocity and dispersion of 673+/-11 km/s and 73+/-14 km/s, respectively, for the outer disk field. This is consistent with the mean HI velocity of the disk at that distance. For the halo field we obtain a LOS velocity and dispersion of 519+/-12 km/s and 42+/-22 km/s. The halo fields' velocity measurement is within ~40 km/s from the systemic LOS velocity of NGC 4945, which is 563 km/s, suggesting that its stellar halo at 34.6 kpc along the major axis is counter-rotating and is of likely accretion origin. This provides the first ever kinematic measurement of the stellar halo of a Milky Way-mass galaxy outside the Local Group from its resolved stellar population, and establishes a powerful technique for measuring the velocity field of the stellar halos of nearby galaxies., Comment: Accepted to A&A. 23 pages, 12 figures, 2 appendices

We measure the high-mass stellar initial mass function (IMF) from resolved stars in M33 young stellar clusters. Leveraging \textit{Hubble Space Telescope's} high resolving power, we fully model the IMF probabilistically. We first model the optical CMD of each cluster to constrain its power-law slope $\Gamma$, marginalized over other cluster parameters in the fit (e.g., cluster age, mass, and radius). We then probabilistically model the distribution of MF slopes for a highly strict cluster sample of 9 clusters more massive than log(Mass/M$_{\odot}$)=3.6; above this mass, all clusters have well-populated main sequences of massive stars and should have accurate recovery of their MF slopes, based on extensive tests with artificial clusters. We find the ensemble IMF is best described by a mean high-mass slope of $\overline{\Gamma} = 1.49\pm0.18$, with an intrinsic scatter of $\sigma^{2}_{\Gamma} = 0.02^{+0.16}_{0.00}$, consistent with a universal IMF. We find no dependence of the IMF on environmental impacts such as the local star formation rate or galactocentric radius within M33, which serves as a proxy for metallicity. This $\overline{\Gamma}$ measurement is consistent with similar measurements in M31, despite M33 having a much higher star formation rate intensity. While this measurement is formally consistent with the canonical Kroupa ($\Gamma = 1.30$) IMF, as well as the Salpeter ($\Gamma = 1.35)$) value, it is the second Local Group cluster sample to show evidence for a somewhat steeper high-mass IMF slope. Young stellar objects (YSOs) are the gold standard for tracing star formation in galaxies but have been unobservable beyond the Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds. But that all changed when the James Webb Space Telescope was launched, which we use to identify YSOs in the Local Group galaxy M33, marking the first time that individual YSOs have been identified at these large distances. We present MIRI imaging mosaics at 5.6 and 21 microns that cover a significant portion of one of M33's spiral arms that has existing panchromatic imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope and deep ALMA CO measurements. Using these MIRI and Hubble Space Telescope images, we identify point sources using the new DOLPHOT MIRI module. We identify 793 candidate YSOs from cuts based on colour, proximity to giant molecular clouds (GMCs), and visual inspection. Similar to Milky Way GMCs, we find that higher mass GMCs contain more YSOs and YSO emission, which further shows YSOs identify star formation better than most tracers that cannot capture this relationship at cloud scales. Star formation in galaxies is regulated by turbulence, outflows, gas heating and cloud dispersal -- processes which depend sensitively on the properties of the interstellar medium (ISM) into which supernovae (SNe) explode. Unfortunately, direct measurements of ISM environments around SNe remain scarce, as SNe are rare and often distant. Here we demonstrate a new approach: mapping the ISM around the massive stars that are soon to explode. This provides a much larger census of explosion sites than possible with only SNe, and allows comparison with sensitive, high-resolution maps of the atomic and molecular gas from the Jansky VLA and ALMA. In the well-resolved Local Group spiral M33, we specifically observe the environments of red supergiants (RSGs, progenitors of Type II SNe), Wolf-Rayet stars (WRs, tracing stars $>$30 M$_{\odot}$, and possibly future stripped-envelope SNe), and supernova remnants (SNRs, locations where SNe have exploded). We find that massive stars evolve not only in dense, molecular-dominated gas (with younger stars in denser gas), but also a substantial fraction ($\sim$45\% of WRs; higher for RSGs) evolve in lower-density, atomic-gas-dominated, inter-cloud media. We show that these measurements are consistent with expectations from different stellar-age tracer maps, and can be useful for validating SN feedback models in numerical simulations of galaxies. Along with the discovery of a 20-pc diameter molecular gas cavity around a WR, these findings re-emphasize the importance of pre-SN/correlated-SN feedback evacuating the dense gas around massive stars before explosion, and the need for high-resolution (down to pc-scale) surveys of the multi-phase ISM in nearby galaxies., Comment: 34 pages, 14 figures. The dwarf galaxy Triangulum (M33) presents an interesting testbed for studying stellar halo formation: it is sufficiently massive so as to have likely accreted smaller satellites, but also lies within the regime where feedback and other "in-situ" formation mechanisms are expected to play a role. In this work, we analyse the line-of-sight kinematics of stars across M33 from the TREX survey with a view to understanding the origin of its halo. We split our sample into two broad populations of varying age, comprising 2032 "old" red giant branch (RGB) stars, and 671 "intermediate-age" asymptotic giant branch (AGB) and carbon stars. We find decisive evidence for two distinct kinematic components in both old and intermediate-age populations: a low-dispersion (~22 km/s) disk-like component co-rotating with M33's HI gas, and a significantly higher-dispersion component (~50-60 km/s) which does not rotate in the same plane as the gas and is thus interpreted as M33's stellar halo. While kinematically similar, the fraction of stars associated with the halo component differs significantly between the two populations: this is consistently ~10% for the intermediate age population, but decreases from ~34% to ~10% as a function of radius for the old population. We additionally find evidence that the intermediate-age halo population is systematically offset from the systemic velocity of M33 by ~25 km/s, with a preferred central LOS velocity of ~-155 km/s. This is the first detection and characterisation of an intermediate-age halo in M33, and suggests in-situ formation mechanisms, as well as potentially tidal interactions, have helped shaped it., Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures. We report results from a systematic wide-area search for faint dwarf galaxies at heliocentric distances from 0.3 to 2 Mpc using the full six years of data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES). Unlike previous searches over the DES data, this search specifically targeted a field population of faint galaxies located beyond the Milky Way virial radius. We derive our detection efficiency for faint, resolved dwarf galaxies in the Local Volume with a set of synthetic galaxies and expect our search to be complete to $M_V$ ~ $(-7, -10)$ mag for galaxies at $D = (0.3, 2.0)$ Mpc respectively. We find no new field dwarfs in the DES footprint, but we report the discovery of one high-significance candidate dwarf galaxy at a distance of $2.2\substack{+0.05\\-0.12}$ Mpc, a potential satellite of the Local Volume galaxy NGC 55, separated by $47$ arcmin (physical separation as small as 30 kpc). We estimate this dwarf galaxy to have an absolute V-band magnitude of $-8.0\substack{+0.5\\-0.3}$ mag and an azimuthally averaged physical half-light radius of $2.2\substack{+0.5\\-0.4}$ kpc, making this one of the lowest surface brightness galaxies ever found with $\mu = 32.3$ mag ${\rm arcsec}^{-2}$. This is the largest, most diffuse galaxy known at this luminosity, suggesting possible tidal interactions with its host., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures

The star formation histories (SFHs) of galactic stellar haloes offer crucial insights into the merger history of the galaxy and the effects of those mergers on their hosts. Such measurements have revealed that while the Milky Way's most important merger was 8-10 Gyr ago, M31's largest merger was more recent, within the last few Gyr. Unfortunately, the required halo SFH measurements are extremely observationally expensive outside of the Local Group. Here we use asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars brighter than the tip of the red giant branch (RGB) to constrain stellar halo SFHs. Both stellar population models and archival datasets show that the AGB/RGB ratio constrains the time before which 90% of the stars formed, $t_{90}$. We find AGB stars in the haloes of three highly-inclined roughly Milky Way-mass galaxies with resolved star measurements from the Hubble Space Telescope; this population is most prominent in the stellar haloes of NGC 253 and NGC 891, suggesting that their stellar haloes contain stars born at relatively late times, with inferred $t_{90}\sim 6\pm1.5$Gyr. This ratio also varies from region to region, tending towards higher values along the major axis and in tidal streams or shells. By combining our measurements with previous constraints, we find a tentative anticorrelation between halo age and stellar halo mass, a trend that exists in models of galaxy formation but has never been elucidated before, i.e, the largest stellar haloes of Milky-Way mass galaxies were assembled more recently., Comment: 20 Pages, 10 Figures

We present a detailed analysis of the the structure of the Local Group flocculent spiral galaxy M33, as measured using the Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury Triangulum Extended Region (PHATTER) survey. Leveraging the multiwavelength coverage of PHATTER, we find that the oldest populations are dominated by a smooth exponential disk with two distinct spiral arms and a classical central bar $-$ completely distinct from what is seen in broadband optical imaging, and the first-ever confirmation of a bar in M33. We estimate a bar extent of $\sim$1 kpc. The two spiral arms are asymmetric in orientation and strength, and likely represent the innermost impact of the recent tidal interaction responsible for M33's warp at larger scales. The flocculent multi-armed morphology for which M33 is known is only visible in the young upper main sequence population, which closely tracks the morphology of the ISM. We investigate the stability of M33's disk, finding $Q{\sim}1$ over the majority of the disk. We fit multiple components to the old stellar density distribution and find that, when considering recent stellar kinematics, M33's bulk structure favors the inclusion of an accreted halo component, modeled as a broken power-law. The best-fit halo model has an outer power-law index of $-$3 and accurately describes observational evidence of M33's stellar halo from both resolved stellar spectroscopy in the disk and its stellar populations at large radius. Integrating this profile yields a total halo stellar mass of ${\sim}5{\times}10^8\ M_{\odot}$, giving a total stellar halo mass fraction of 16%, most of which resides in the innermost 2.5 kpc., Comment: 31 pages, 17 figures, 5 tables, Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the final legacy version of stellar photometry for the Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury (PHAT) survey. We have reprocessed all of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) and Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) near ultraviolet (F275W, F336W), optical (F475W, F814W), and near infrared (F110W, F160W) imaging from the PHAT survey using an improved method that optimized the survey depth and chip gap coverage by including all overlapping exposures in all bands in the photometry. An additional improvement was gained through the use of charge transfer efficiency (CTE) corrected input images, which provide more complete star finding as well as more reliable photometry for the NUV bands, which had no CTE correction in the previous version of the PHAT photometry. While this method requires significantly more computing resources and time than earlier versions where the photometry was performed on individual pointings, it results in smaller systematic instrumental completeness variations as demonstrated by cleaner maps in stellar density, and it results in optimal constraints on stellar fluxes in all bands from the survey data. Our resulting catalog has 138 million stars, 18% more than the previous catalog, with lower density regions gaining as much as 40% more stars. The nearby face-on star forming spiral galaxy NGC 6946 is known as the Fireworks Galaxy due to its hosting an unusually large number of supernova. We analyze its resolved near-ultraviolet (NUV) stellar photometry measured from images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope's (HST) Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) with F275W and F336W filters. We model the color-magnitude diagrams (CMD) of the UV photometry to derive the spatially-resolved star formation history (SFH) of NGC 6946 over the last 25 Myr. From this analysis, we produce maps of the spatial distribution of young stellar populations and measure the total recent star formation rate (SFR) of nearly the entire young stellar disk. We find the global SFR(age$\leq$25 Myr)=$13.17 \substack{+0.91 \\-0.79} M_\odot/\rm yr$. Over this period, the SFR is initially very high ($23.39\substack{+2.43\\-2.11} M_\odot/\rm yr$ between 16-25 Myr ago), then monotonically decreases to a recent SFR of $5.31\substack{+0.19\\-0.17} M_\odot/\rm yr$ in the last 10 Myr. This decrease in global star formation rate over the last 25 Myr is consistent with measurements made with other SFR indicators. We discuss in detail two of the most active regions of the galaxy, which we find are responsible for 3% and 5% of the total star formation over the past 6.3 Myr., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

M64, often called the "Evil Eye" galaxy, is unique among local galaxies. Beyond its dramatic, dusty nucleus, it also hosts an outer gas disk that counter-rotates relative to its stars. The mass of this outer disk is comparable to the gas content of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), prompting the idea that it was likely accreted in a recent minor merger. Yet, detailed follow-up studies of M64's outer disk have shown no evidence of such an event, leading to other interpretations, such as a "flyby" interaction with the distant diffuse satellite Coma P. We present Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam observations of M64's stellar halo, which resolve its stellar populations and reveal a spectacular radial shell feature, oriented $\sim$30$^{\circ}$ relative to the major axis and along the rotation axis of the outer gas disk. The shell is $\sim$45 kpc southeast of M64, while a similar but more diffuse plume to the northwest extends to $>$100 kpc. We estimate a stellar mass and metallicity for the southern shell of $M_{\star} {=} 1.80~{\pm}~0.54{\times}10^8~M_{\odot}$ and [M/H] $=$ $-$1.0, respectively, and a similar mass of $1.42~{\pm}~0.71{\times}10^8 M_{\odot}$ for the northern plume. Taking into account the accreted material in M64's inner disk, we estimate a total stellar mass for the progenitor satellite of $M_{\rm \star,prog}~{\simeq}~5{\times}10^8~M_{\odot}$. These results suggest that M64 is in the final stages of a minor merger with a gas-rich satellite strikingly similar to the SMC, in which M64's accreted counter-rotating gas originated, and which is responsible for the formation of its dusty inner star-forming disk., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We use young clusters and giant molecular clouds (GMCs) in the galaxies M33 and M31 to constrain temporal and spatial scales in the star formation process. In M33, we compare the PHATTER catalogue of 1214 clusters with ages measured via colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) fitting to 444 GMCs identified from a new 35 pc resolution ALMA $^{12}$CO(2-1) survey. In M31, we compare the PHAT catalogue of 1249 clusters to 251 GMCs measured from a CARMA $^{12}$CO(1-0) survey with 20 pc resolution. Through two-point correlation analysis, we find that young clusters have a high probability of being near other young clusters, but correlation between GMCs is suppressed by the cloud identification algorithm. By comparing the positions, we find that younger clusters are closer to GMCs than older clusters. Through cross-correlation analysis of the M33 cluster data, we find that clusters are statistically associated when they are $\leq$10 Myr old. Utilizing the high precision ages of the clusters, we find that clusters older than $\approx 18$ Myr are uncorrelated with the molecular ISM. Using the spatial coincidence of the youngest clusters and GMCs in M33, we estimate that clusters spend $\approx$4-6 Myr inside their parent GMC. Through similar analysis, we find that the GMCs in M33 have a total lifetime of $\approx 11$-15 Myr. We also develop a drift model and show that the above correlations can be explained if the clusters in M33 have a 5-10 km s$^{-1}$ velocity dispersion relative to the molecular ISM., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, 1 tables, accepted for publication at MNRAS

It is not yet settled how the combination of secular processes and merging gives rise to the bulges and pseudobulges of galaxies. The nearby ($D\sim$ 4.2 Mpc) disk galaxy M94 (NGC 4736) has the largest pseudobulge in the local universe, and offers a unique opportunity for investigating the role of merging in the formation of its pseudobulge. We present a first ever look at M94's stellar halo, which we expect to contain a fossil record of M94's past mergers. Using Subaru's Hyper Suprime-Cam, we resolve and identify red giant branch (RGB) stars in M94's halo, finding two distinct populations. After correcting for completeness through artificial star tests, we can measure the radial profile of each RGB population. The metal-rich RGB stars show an unbroken exponential profile to a radius of 30 kpc that is a clear continuation of M94's outer disk. M94's metal poor stellar halo is detectable over a wider area and clearly separates from its metal-rich disk. By integrating the halo density profile, we infer a total accreted stellar mass of $\sim 2.8 \times 10^8 M_\odot$, with a median metallicity of [M/H] $=-$1.4. This indicates that M94's most-massive past merger was with a galaxy similar to, or less massive than, the Small Magellanic Cloud. Post-starburst galaxies (PSBs) have recently and rapidly quenched their star-formation, thus they are an important way to understand how galaxies transition from star-forming late-types to quiescent early-types. The recent discovery of large cold gas reservoirs in PSBs calls into question the theory that galaxies must lose their gas to become quiescent. Optical Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS) surveys have revealed two classes of PSBs: central PSBs with central quenching regions and ring PSBs with quenching in their outskirts. We analyze a sample of 13 nearby (z < 0.1) PSBs with spatially resolved optical IFS data from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey and matched resolution Atacama Large (sub-)Millimeter Array (ALMA) observations of $^{12}$CO(1-0). Disturbed stellar kinematics in 7/13 of our PSBs and centrally concentrated molecular gas is consistent with a recent merger for most of our sample. In galaxies without merger evidence, alternate processes may funnel gas inwards and suppress star-formation, which may include outflows, stellar bars, and minor mergers or interactions. The star-formation efficiencies of the post-starburst regions in nearly half our galaxies are suppressed while the gas fractions are consistent with star-forming galaxies. AGN feedback may drive this stabilization, and we observe AGN-consistent emission in the centers of 5/13 galaxies. Finally, our central and ring PSBs have similar properties except the ionized and molecular gas in central PSBs is more disturbed. Overall, the molecular gas in our PSBs tends to be compact and highly disturbed, resulting in concentrated gas reservoirs unable to form stars efficiently., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

The faint and ultrafaint dwarf galaxies in the Local Group form the observational bedrock upon which our understanding of small-scale cosmology rests. In order to understand whether this insight generalizes, it is imperative to use resolved-star techniques to discover similarly faint satellites in nearby galaxy groups. We describe our search for ultrafaint galaxies in the M81 group using deep ground-based resolved-star data sets from Subaru's Hyper Suprime-Cam. We present one new ultrafaint dwarf galaxy in the M81 group and identify five additional extremely low surface brightness candidate ultrafaint dwarfs that reach deep into the ultrafaint regime to $M_V \sim -6$ (similar to current limits for Andromeda satellites). These candidates' luminosities and sizes are similar to known Local Group dwarf galaxies Tucana B, Canes Venatici I, Hercules, and Bo\"otes I. Most of these candidates are likely to be real, based on tests of our techniques on blank fields. Intriguingly, all of these candidates are spatially clustered around NGC 3077, which is itself an M81 group satellite in an advanced state of tidal disruption. This is somewhat surprising, as M81 itself and its largest satellite M82 are both substantially more massive than NGC 3077 and by virtue of their greater masses, would have been expected to host as many or more ultrafaint candidates. We construct a catalog of star clusters from Hubble Space Telescope images of the inner disk of the Triangulum Galaxy (M33) using image classifications collected by the Local Group Cluster Search, a citizen science project hosted on the Zooniverse platform. We identify 1214 star clusters within the Hubble Space Telescope imaging footprint of the Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury: Triangulum Extended Region (PHATTER) survey. Comparing this catalog to existing compilations in the literature, 68% of the clusters are newly identified. The final catalog includes multi-band aperture photometry and fits for cluster properties via integrated light SED fitting. We measure the spatially resolved recent star formation history (SFH) of M33 using optical images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope as part of the Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury: Triangulum Extended Region (PHATTER) survey. The area covered by the observations used in this analysis covers a de-projected area of $\sim$38 kpc$^{2}$ and extends to $\sim$3.5 and $\sim$2 kpc from the center of M33 along the major and semi-major axes, respectively. We divide the PHATTER optical survey into 2005 regions that measure 24 arcsec, $\sim$100 pc, on a side and fit color magnitude diagrams for each region individually to measure the spatially resolved SFH of M33 within the PHATTER footprint. There are significant fluctuations in the SFH on small spatial scales and also galaxy-wide scales that we measure back to about 630 Myr ago. We observe a more flocculent spiral structure in stellar populations younger than about 80 Myr, while the structure of the older stellar populations is dominated by two spiral arms. We also observe a bar in the center of M33, which dominates at ages older than about 80 Myr. Finally, we find that the mean star formation rate (SFR) over the last 100 Myr within the PHATTER footprint is 0.32$\pm$0.02 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. We measure a current SFR (over the last 10 Myr) of 0.20$\pm$0.03 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. The study of outer halo globular cluster (GC) populations can give insight into galaxy merging, globular cluster accretion and the origin of GCs. We use archival Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) data in concert with space-based GALEX, IRAC and Gaia EDR3 data to select candidate Globular clusters (GCs) in the outer halo of the M81 group for confirmation and future study. We use a small sample of previously-discovered GCs to tune our selection criteria, finding that bright already-known GCs in the M81 group have sizes that are typically slightly larger than the Subaru PSF in our fields. In the optical bands, GCs appear to have colours that are only slightly different from stars. The inclusion of archival IRAC data yields dramatic improvements in colour separation, as the long wavelength baseline aids somewhat in the separation from stars and clearly separates GCs from many compact background galaxies. We show that some previously spectroscopically-identified GCs in the M81 group are instead foreground stars or background galaxies. GCs close to M82 have radial velocities suggesting that they fell into the M81 group along with M82. The overall M81 GC luminosity function is similar to the Milky Way and M31. M81's outer halo GCs are similar to the Milky Way in their metallicities and numbers, and much less numerous than M31's more metal-rich outer halo GC population. These properties reflect differences in the three galaxies' merger histories, highlighting the possibility of using outer halo GCs to trace merger history in larger samples of galaxies.

The molecular gas in galaxies traces both the fuel for star formation and the processes that can enhance or suppress star formation. Observations of the molecular gas state can thus point to when and why galaxies stop forming stars. In this study, we present ALMA observations of the molecular gas in galaxies evolving through the post-starburst phase. These galaxies have low current star formation rates, regardless of the SFR tracer used, with recent starbursts ending within the last 600 Myr. We present CO (3-2) observations for three post-starburst galaxies, and dense gas HCN/HCO+/HNC (1-0) observations for six (four new) post-starburst galaxies. The post-starbursts have low excitation traced by the CO spectral line energy distribution (SLED) up to CO (3-2), more similar to early-type than starburst galaxies. The low excitation indicates that lower density rather than high temperatures may suppress star formation during the post-starburst phase. One galaxy displays a blueshifted outflow traced by CO (3-2). MaNGA observations show that the ionized gas velocity is disturbed relative to the stellar velocity field, with a blueshifted component aligned with the molecular gas outflow, suggestive of a multiphase outflow. Low ratios of HCO+/CO, indicating low fractions of dense molecular gas relative to the total molecular gas, are seen throughout post-starburst phase, except for the youngest post-starburst galaxy considered here. Post-starburst (PSB), or 'E+A', galaxies represent a rapid transitional phase between major, gas-rich mergers and gas-poor, quiescent early-type galaxies. Surprisingly, many PSBs have been shown to host a significant interstellar medium (ISM), despite theoretical predictions that the majority of star-forming gas should be expelled in AGN- or starburst-driven outflows. To-date, the resolved properties of this surviving ISM have remained unknown. We present high resolution ALMA continuum and CO(2$-$1) observations in six gas- and dust-rich PSBs, revealing for the first time the spatial and kinematic structure of their ISM on sub-kpc scales. We find extremely compact molecular reservoirs, with dust and gas surface densities rivaling those found in (ultra-)luminous infrared galaxies. We observe spatial and kinematic disturbances in all sources, with some also displaying disk-like kinematics. Estimates of the internal turbulent pressure in the gas exceed those of normal star-forming disks by at least 2 orders of magnitude, and rival the turbulent gas found in local interacting galaxies, such as the Antennae. Though the source of this high turbulent pressure remains uncertain, we suggest that the high incidence of tidal disruption events (TDEs) in PSBs could play a role. The star formation in these PSBs' turbulent central molecular reservoirs is suppressed, forming stars only 10% as efficiently as starburst galaxies with similar gas surface densities. "The fall" of star formation in these galaxies was not precipitated by complete gas expulsion or redistribution. We present the discovery of a candidate ultra-faint Milky Way satellite, Eridanus IV (DELVE J0505$-$0931), detected in photometric data from the DECam Local Volume Exploration survey (DELVE). Eridanus IV is a faint ($M_V = -4.7 \pm 0.2$), extended ($r_{1/2} = 75^{+16}_{-13}$ pc), and elliptical ($\epsilon = 0.54 \pm 0.1$) system at a heliocentric distance of $76.7^{+4.0}_{-6.1}$ kpc, with a stellar population that is well-described by an old, metal-poor isochrone (age of $\tau \sim 13.0$ Gyr and metallicity of ${\rm [Fe/H] \lesssim -2.1}$ dex). These properties are consistent with the known population of ultra-faint Milky Way satellite galaxies. Eridanus IV is also prominently detected using proper motion measurements from Gaia Early Data Release 3, with a systemic proper motion of $(\mu_{\alpha} \cos \delta, \mu_{\delta}) = (+0.25 \pm 0.06, -0.10 \pm 0.05)$ mas yr$^{-1}$ measured from its horizontal branch and red giant branch member stars. We investigate whether the considerable diversity in the satellite populations of nearby Milky Way (MW)-mass galaxies is connected with the diversity in their host's merger histories. Analyzing 8 nearby galaxies with extensive observations of their satellite populations and stellar halos, we characterize each galaxy's merger history using the metric of its most dominant merger, $M_{\rm \star,Dom}$, defined as the greater of either its total accreted stellar mass or most massive current satellite. We find an unexpectedly tight relationship between these galaxies' number of $M_{V}\,{<}\,{-}9$ satellites within 150 kpc ($N_{\rm Sat}$) and $M_{\rm \star,Dom}$. This relationship remains even after accounting for differences in galaxy mass. Using the star formation and orbital histories of satellites around the MW and M81, we demonstrate that both likely evolved along the $M_{\rm\star,Dom}{-}N_{\rm Sat}$ relation during their current dominant mergers with the LMC and M82, respectively. We investigate the presence of this relation in galaxy formation models, including using the FIRE simulations to directly compare to the observations. We find no relation between $M_{\rm\star,Dom}$ and $N_{\rm Sat}$ in FIRE, and a universally large scatter in $N_{\rm Sat}$ with $M_{\rm \star,Dom}$ across models $-$ in direct contrast with the tightness of the empirical relation. This acute difference in the observed and predicted scaling relation between two fundamental galaxy properties signals that current simulations do not sufficiently reproduce diverse merger histories and their effects on satellite populations. The recent star formation histories (SFHs) of post-starburst galaxies have been determined almost exclusively from detailed modeling of their composite star light. This has provided important but limited information on the number, strength, and duration of bursts of star formation. In this work, we present a direct and independent measure of the recent SFH of S12 (plate-mjd-fiber for SDSS 623-52051-207; designated EAS12 in Smercina et al. 2018) from its star cluster population. We detect clusters from high resolution, $UBR$ optical observations from HST, and compare their luminosities and colors with stellar population models to estimate the ages and masses of the clusters. No clusters younger than $\sim$70 Myr are found, indicating star formation shut off at this time. Clusters formed $\sim$120 Myr ago reach masses up to $\sim \mbox{few}\times10^7~M_{\odot}$, several times higher than similar age counterparts formed in actively merging galaxies like the Antennae and NGC 3256. We develop a new calibration based on known properties for 8 nearby galaxies to estimate the star formation rate (SFR) of a galaxy from the mass of the most massive cluster, $M_{\rm max}$. The cluster population indicates that S12 experienced an extremely intense but short-lived burst $\sim$120 Myr ago, with an estimated peak of $500^{+500}_{-250}~M_{\odot}~\mbox{yr}^{-1}$ and duration of $50\pm25$ Myr, one of the highest SFRs estimated for any galaxy in the nearby universe. Prior to the recent, intense burst, S12 was forming stars at a moderate rate of $\sim 3{-}5~M_{\odot}~\mbox{yr}^{-1}$, typical of spiral galaxies. However, the system also experienced an earlier burst approximately $1{-}3$ Gyr ago. The DECam Local Volume Exploration survey (DELVE) is a 126-night survey program on the 4-m Blanco Telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile. DELVE seeks to understand the characteristics of faint satellite galaxies and other resolved stellar substructures over a range of environments in the Local Volume. DELVE will combine new DECam observations with archival DECam data to cover ~15000 deg$^2$ of high-Galactic-latitude (|b| > 10 deg) southern sky to a 5$\sigma$ depth of g,r,i,z ~ 23.5 mag. In addition, DELVE will cover a region of ~2200 deg$^2$ around the Magellanic Clouds to a depth of g,r,i ~ 24.5 mag and an area of ~135 deg$^2$ around four Magellanic analogs to a depth of g,i ~ 25.5 mag. Here, we present an overview of the DELVE program and progress to date. We also summarize the first DELVE public data release (DELVE DR1), which provides point-source and automatic aperture photometry for ~520 million astronomical sources covering ~5000 deg$^2$ of the southern sky to a 5$\sigma$ point-source depth of g=24.3, r=23.9, i=23.3, and z=22.8 mag. We present panchromatic resolved stellar photometry for 22 million stars in the Local Group dwarf spiral Triangulum (M33), derived from Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) in the optical (F475W, F814W), and the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) in the near ultraviolet (F275W, F336W) and near-infrared (F110W, F160W) bands. The large, contiguous survey area covers $\sim$14 square kpc and extends to 3.5 kpc (14 arcmin, or 1.5-2 scale lengths) from the center of M33. The PHATTER observing strategy and photometry technique closely mimic those of the Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury (PHAT), but with updated photometry techniques that take full advantage of all overlapping pointings (aligned to within $<$5-10 milliarcseconds) and improved treatment of spatially-varying point spread functions. The photometry reaches a completeness-limited depth of F475W$\sim$28.5 in the lowest surface density regions observed in M33 and F475W$\sim$26.5 in the most crowded regions found near the center of M33. We find the young populations trace several relatively tight arms, while the old populations show a clear, looser two-armed structure. We present extensive analysis of the data quality including artificial star tests to quantify completeness, photometric uncertainties, and flux biases. NGC 300 is a low-mass disk galaxy in the Sculptor group. In the literature, it has been identified as a pure exponential disk galaxy, as its luminosity profile could be well fitted with a single exponential law over many disk scale lengths (Type I). We investigate the stellar luminosity distribution of NGC 300 using $Hubble$ $Space$ $Telescope$ (HST) archive data, reaching farther and deeper than any other previous studies. Color magnitude diagrams show a significant population of old red giant branch (RGB) stars in all fields out to $R\sim19$ kpc ($32'$), as well as younger populations in the inner regions. We construct the density profiles of the young, intermediate-aged, and old stellar populations. We find two clear breaks in the density profiles of the old RGB and intermediate-aged stars: one down-bending (Type II) at $R\sim5.9$ kpc, and another up-bending (Type III) at $R\sim8.3$ kpc. Moreover, the old RGB stars exhibit a negative radial color gradient with an up-bending at $R\sim8$~kpc, beyond which the stellar populations are uniformly old ($>$7~Gyr) and metal-poor ($\rm[Fe/H] = -1.6^{+0.2}_{-0.4}$ dex). The outer stellar component at $R\gtrapprox8$ kpc is, therefore, well separated from the inner disk in terms of the stellar density and stellar populations. Recent work has shown that Milky Way-mass galaxies display an incredible range of stellar halo properties, yet the origin of this diversity is unclear. The nearby galaxy M81 $-$ currently interacting with M82 and NGC 3077 $-$ sheds unique light on this problem. We present a Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam survey of the resolved stellar populations around M81, revealing M81's stellar halo in never-before-seen detail. We resolve the halo to unprecedented $V$-band equivalent surface brightnesses of 33 mag arcsec$^{-2}$, and produce the first-ever global stellar mass density map for a Milky Way-mass stellar halo outside of the Local Group. Using the minor axis, we confirm M81's halo as one of the lowest mass and metal-poorest known ($M_{\star} \simeq 1.16{\times}10^9 M_{\odot}$, [Fe/H] $\simeq {-}1.2$) $-$ indicating a relatively quiet prior accretion history. Yet, our global halo census finds that tidally unbound material from M82 and NGC 3077 provides a substantial infusion of metal-rich material ($M_{\star} \simeq 5.4{\times}10^8$ $M_{\odot}$, [Fe/H] $\simeq {-}$0.9). We further show that, following the accretion of its massive satellite M82 (and the LMC-like NGC 3077), M81 will host one of the most massive and metal-rich stellar halos in the nearby universe. Thus, the saga of M81: following a passive history, M81's merger with M82 will completely transform its halo from a low-mass, anemic halo rivaling the MW, to a metal-rich behemoth rivaled only by systems such as M31. The dwarf satellites of `giant' Milky Way (MW)-mass galaxies are our primary probes of low-mass dark matter halos. The number and velocities of the satellite galaxies of the MW and M31 initially puzzled galaxy formation theorists, but are now reproduced well by many models. Yet, are the MW's and M31's satellites representative? Were galaxy formation models `overfit'? These questions motivate deep searches for satellite galaxies outside the Local Group. We present a deep survey of the `classical' satellites ($M_{\star}$$\geqslant$4$\times$10$^5 M_{\odot}$) of the MW-mass galaxy M94 out to 150 kpc projected distance. We find $only\ two$ satellites, each with $M_{\star}{\sim}10^6 M_{\odot}$, compared with 6-12 such satellites in the four other MW-mass systems with comparable data (MW, M31, M81, M101). Using a `standard' prescription for occupying dark matter halos (taken from the fully hydrodynamical EAGLE simulation) with galaxies, we find that such a sparse satellite population occurs in $<$0.2% of MW-mass systems $-$ a $<$1% probability among a sample of five (known systems + M94). In order to produce an M94-like system more frequently we make satellite galaxy formation much more stochastic than is currently predicted by dramatically increasing the slope and scatter of the stellar mass-halo mass (SMHM) relation. Surprisingly, the SMHM relation must be altered even for halos masses up to 10$^{11}M_{\odot} -$ significantly above the mass scales predicted to have increased scatter from current hydrodynamical models. Post-starburst or "E+A" galaxies are rapidly transitioning from star-forming to quiescence. While the current star formation rate of post-starbursts is already at the level of early type galaxies, we recently discovered that many have large CO-traced molecular gas reservoirs consistent with normal star forming galaxies. These observations raise the question of why these galaxies have such low star formation rates. Here we present an ALMA search for the denser gas traced by HCN (1--0) and HCO+ (1--0) in two CO-luminous, quiescent post-starburst galaxies. Intriguingly, we fail to detect either molecule. The upper limits are consistent with the low star formation rates and with early-type galaxies. The HCN/CO luminosity ratio upper limits are low compared to star-forming and even many early type galaxies. This implied low dense gas mass fraction explains the low star formation rates relative to the CO-traced molecular gas and suggests the state of the gas in post-starburst galaxies is unusual, with some mechanism inhibiting its collapse to denser states. We conclude that post-starbursts galaxies are now quiescent because little dense gas is available, in contrast to the significant CO-traced lower density gas reservoirs that still remain., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

The traditional picture of post-starburst galaxies as dust- and gas-poor merger remnants, rapidly transitioning to quiescence, has been recently challenged. Unexpected detections of a significant ISM in many post-starbursts raise important questions. Are they truly quiescent and, if so, what mechanisms inhibit further star formation? What processes dominate their ISM energetics? We present an infrared spectroscopic and photometric survey of 33 SDSS-selected E+A post-starbursts, aimed at resolving these questions. We find compact, warm dust reservoirs with high PAH abundances, and total gas and dust masses significantly higher than expected from stellar recycling alone. Both PAH/TIR and dust-to-burst stellar mass ratios are seen to decrease with post-burst age, indicative of the accumulating effects of dust destruction and an incipient transition to hot, early-type ISM properties. Their infrared spectral properties are unique, with dominant PAH emission, very weak nebular lines, unusually strong H$_{2}$ rotational emission, and deep ${\rm [C\, II]}$ deficits. There is substantial scatter among SFR indicators, and both PAH and TIR luminosities provide overestimates. Even as potential upper limits, all tracers show that the SFR has typically experienced a more than two order-of-magnitude decline since the starburst, and that the SFR is considerably lower than expected given both their stellar masses and molecular gas densities. These results paint a coherent picture of systems in which star formation was, indeed, rapidly truncated, but in which the ISM was $\textit{not}$ completely expelled, and is instead supported against collapse by latent or continued injection of turbulent or mechanical heating. We present the discovery of d1005+68, a new faint dwarf galaxy in the M81 Group, using observations taken with the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam. d1005+68's color-magnitude diagram is consistent with a distance of $3.98_{-0.43}^{+0.39}$ Mpc, establishing group membership. We derive an absolute $V$-band magnitude, from stellar isochrone fitting, of $M_{V} = -7.94_{-0.50}^{+0.38}$, with a half-light radius of $r_{h} = 188_{-41}^{+39}$ pc. These place d1005+68 within the radius-luminosity locus of Local Group and M81 satellites and among the faintest confirmed satellites outside the Local Group. Assuming an age of 12 Gyr, d1005+68's red giant branch is best fit by an isochrone of [Fe/H] $= -1.90 \pm 0.24$. It has a projected separation from nearby M81 satellite BK5N of only 5 kpc. As this is well within BK5N's virial radius, we speculate that d1005+68 may be a satellite of BK5N.
